Bazaar Competences Guidelines The Bazaar Project aims at widening the access of adults to basic skills such as communication in the target language. In order to deal with the communicative situations, one needs to carry out certain tasks and language activities which require a number of competences. Among these, the communicative competence, which is the main focus of the project, represents that facility of our competence that enables us to convey and interpret messages and to negotiate meanings interpersonally in specific contexts.

In the Bazaar Project, the communication themes, i.e. the topics of discourse, conversation or reflection as the focus on areas such as personal identification, daily life, relations with other people, shopping, services such as health and food and drinks. The framework of these communicative competences, which are linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic, is within A1 and A2 levels of CEF.

Lisbon hosted the second coordination meeting The second coordination meeting of Bazaar was held in Lisbon on 27 and 28 June 2013. The meeting, organized by the Portuguese partner E-VIA / Palco de Sombras, took place at Casa da Imprensa (House Press) in the historic centre of the Portuguese capital. For two days issues and proposals were analysed and discussed to facilitate the continued work of the consortium and the best development path for the project. In addition to reviewing the status of the various work packages of Bazaar, the planning of future tasks and their implementation by the different partners was adjusted where necessary. The partner E-VIA / Palco de Sombras conducted a practical session for partners providing guidelines for video production. The images captured in various activities conducted by the partners will then be edited to provide a video record of the work of the project. The third project coordination meeting will be hosted by our German partner NTL in Erlangen, on 16 and 17 January 2014 and will be another important milestone for the progress of Bazaar.

The training activities in Bulgaria The Bulgarian project partner started the pilot training in Bulgarian language in October 2013. To enable this with the immigrant community a cooperation agreement was signed between Dia - Sport Association and the State Agency for Refugees. The training among immigrants in Sofia was widely publicized with immigrants from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Algeria and Sudan expressing their willingness to participate in the training. After consultations with the participants several key themes of the Bulgarian language training were developed. For the past two months 16 meetings with the trainees were held during which the trainees were acquainted with the Bulgarian alphabet; orientation in a communicative environment (acquaintance); parts of the human body and condition of the organs of the human body (health). Parallel to the discussion of these topics some practical training are planned to consolidate and extend the knowledge of the language. The first of these practical training sessions included exercises of numbers from 1 to 10, personal pronouns, greetings and acquaintance. For each meeting the immigrant learners are provided with many specially prepared supporting materials. There is a great interest and positive feedback from the immigrants.

The Bazaar project was presented at various seminars in Bulgaria

German Immigrants are happier than Germans - provided they master the language According to a study published in November 2013 immigrants in Germany are more satisfied than the general population - assuming they speak and understand German. The Allensbach Institute has reported the population’s satisfaction in the "German Postal Happiness Atlas 2013". The study also contains information about the living conditions of immigrants. In their own perception, migrants are as healthy as the general population. The authors of the study were surprised that people from a migrant background are

apparently more satisfied with their lives: not what one would expect from the public debate. Moreover, immigrants are more optimistic on average: parents with an immigrant background look positively to the future of their children. 54 percent of respondents with children under 30 believe that the kids will have a better future than themselves. But only 27 percent of indigenous parents affirm that. And language obviously has an enormous impact: Those immigrants who master it are much happier than those who do not speak German. Learning the language is one of the most important requirements for the well-being of immigrants and a better life.

About the Italian pilot training The Italian partners Borgorete and Comune di Perugia jointly started the first of the two scheduled piloting courses on the 10th October 2013. This piloting is being held in the marketplace of Ponte Felcino, a multiethnic neighborhood close to Perugia city centre. The formula that is being adopted is to combine indoor and outdoor activities. The latter are held at the marketplace under a mobile gazebo with chairs and one table. This “mobile school” has been present at the marketplace every Thursday morning (10:00-13:30) and will be until the end of May, when the piloting phase of the project will be formally closed. We foresee that the participants in the activities of the marketplace will be in part different from those who will participate to the indoor activities. This is because the “lessons” offered in the market place are independent one from the other, based on the individual needs of the learners and of an informal nature. So far we have addressed five learners with different needs. We helped some of them to write a personal presentation for job purposes and did language and role playing games with other learners. One morning a group of very nice women gathered under the gazebo where a nice exchange on

Exchanging meanings

culinary and cultural matters spontaneously happened. As said above, we are going to integrate outdoor and indoor activities and the latter will start on the 23rd of January 2014, every Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11:00. The indoor activities will last for 8 weeks. Another piloting course in a different marketplace will start on February 2014, held jointly by Comune di Perugia and Borgorete.

Discovering the marketplace in the countryside of North Yorkshire, UK MRS is based in North Yorkshire and we are keen to involve the local community and migrants in the small market town and surrounding villages of Boroughbridge. The town was a focal point for the rural communities and farming businesses of North Yorkshire but it has had to change with the times and now has a mix of businesses and a more cosmopolitan demography with migrant workers and their families from Central and Eastern Europe. Local community leaders are conscious of the need to help new communities fully integrate with local life – and to have the locals enjoy and celebrate different cultures. Identifying the communities was the first of 3 steps to engaging both local and migrant communities.

Step 2 saw MRS producing a “flyer” to explain the benefits of Bazaar to communities, marketplaces and businesses “what’s in it for me”. Positive responses have included the local supermarket, a dairy producer and a logistics company. These are the communities that identify potential sources of learners and where they can learn. The 3rd step will be to hold Workshops for the exchange of ideas involving community activists, trainers and coaches. The first of these in December 2013 saw a general exchange of ideas but in early 2014 there will be more workshops to “train” peer mentors and coaches. We will keep you in touch with progress in future editions of the Bazaar Newsletter.
