Making sense of 8 characters

elcome to our first Bazi 101 column. Over the course of these columns, we’ll be helping you make sense of all those Chinese characters in those little boxes. In this column we’ll introduce the Bazi Chart, which is a natal or birth chart. Bazi literally means eight characters. In Bazi, each person’s date and time of birth is translated into 8 characters that fill up the 8 boxes of the Bazi Chart. As you can see, the 8 boxes of the Bazi Chart comprise 4 columns and 2 rows. The 4 columns are referred to as the Four Pillars and represent Pillars for your
hour, date, month and year of birth. Each of these Four Pillars relate to different aspects of your life in terms of relationships, career and health. What does the Bazi Chart tell us? All about you! Your character is revealed in your chart. You will know your strengths, your weaknesses and your attitudes.
