When the Church summons Christians to take up the task of evangelisation, she is simply pointing to the source of authentic personal fulfilment. For here we discover a profound law of reality: that life is attained and matures in the measure that it is offered up in order to give life to others. This is certainly what mission means.

E V A N G E L I S AT I O N B R O K E N B AY DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
BISHOP’S VISION
My prayer for the Church of Broken Bay is that it will be a community of faith, One in Christ.
At the heart of our identity as Christians is the person of Jesus Christ and what His coming into the world means for us today.
A community where we are guided by the Holy Spirit towards Jesus Christ as his disciples supported by a vibrant Church where parishes are not only homes of prayer, worship and authentic Catholic formation but places of joy-filled gatherings.
The life, death and resurrection of Jesus – the Kerygma – is a ‘good news story’ like no other, and sharing this Good News with others is the meaning of evangelisation.
1 The person of Jesus Christ, and his message of Good News
2 The Holy Spirit leads us in the way of discipleship
Everyone is invited and welcomed into this community, especially the poor and vulnerable. It is a community that understands its call to holiness and mission, discerning the unique gifts of each member for the service of this call.
3 Building together a culture of vocation for all
My vision for our community is one where we put the Gospel into practice. This is the outward sign that shows we believe what we read, that we teach what we believe, and then go out and practice what we believe.
5 Authentic Catholic education for the
In my Pastoral Letter, “Jesus Christ, our beginning and end 2020-2021”, I outlined my hopes for the community of the Church of Broken Bay in more detail, identifying six key priorities. These priorities form the basis of the Pastoral Mission and our evanglisation goals.

4 A united message reflecting the voice of the bishop at the service of his people
flourishing of human and faith development
6 Justice and mercy place the poor at the heart of the Church
My hope is that everyone may be supported and included in this important work of evangelisation which is both a grace and a vocation for the whole community of the Church.
The Church exists to evangelise, and in Evangelisation Broken Bay we seek to support parishes and communities with this great mission, guided by the vision and priorities set out for us by Bishop Anthony. Everything we do comes back to this missionary call to bring others into relationship with God. This is both our purpose and passion. We also recognise that evangelisation is ultimately the work of God, in which we are priviledged to have a part. For this He has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit who provides all that we need to carry out the mission He has called us to. Being open to the working of the Holy Spirit allows us to better discern creative ways to share the Good News in our current context. At the same time, we are reminded that the message of Jesus Christ is always the same, and it is only by being united in Christ that we can bear fruit.
journey in our Evangelisation and pastoral mission pathway in the Diocese of Broken Bay. Stage 1 was Bishop Anthony’s Pastoral Letter in which he outlined his priorities. The purpose of this One in Christ document, Stage 2, is to introduce our Evangelisation Broken Bay team and outline how we aim to help you live out your mission of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. Stage 3 will be the implementation and activation of our vision and mission, strategic initiatives and programs linked to engagement, enablement, leadership, and discipleship. While we continue to work on a number of programs and events, Stage 3 will highlight a clear strategic pathway to reaching our goals and measured outcomes. May the Holy Spirit continually inspire and animate us, give life to all our efforts and make us bear fruit during our journey together.
This One in Christ document is Stage 2 of our three-stage

OUR GOALS
OUR OBJECTIVES
The three goals of Evangelisation Broken Bay are derived from Bishop Anthony’s six pastoral priorities as articulated in the Bishop’s Pastoral Letter Jesus Christ, our beginning and end. The goals are our response to how we intend to incorporate Bishop Anthony’s priorities as his evangelisation team.
These objectives support our efforts to form a key part of what we seek to achieve.
The focus areas of each of our teams in Evangelisation Broken Bay outlined in the following pages, work together toward our goals. Evangelisation Broken Bay supports and resources clergy, parishes, communities of faith, schools, social services and our Diocesan colleagues to:
Research, create and produce relevant resources and documents that aid our Broken Bay community in Evangelisation.

Provide pathways of genuine encounter with the person of Jesus and form disciples of Christ. That, through the Holy Spirit, people may be on fire with the love of God and empowered for mission.
Build a united community under the care of the Bishop where people can discern and live their call, understanding who they are and what they believe as a community of the Church.
Draw all people into the flourishing of human life by promoting the common good, paying specific attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. This is underpinned by the understanding that the universal good for all humanity is the Good News of Jesus Christ.

As many of you as were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (G A L 3: 27-28)

ONE IN CHRIST Pastoral Mission Evangelisation Broken Bay
E VA N G E L I S AT I O N B R O K E N B AY OUR TEAM Evangelisation Broken Bay supports and equips the community of the Church of Broken Bay. Our primary role is to support the evangelisation efforts of our 27 parishes. Within the Diocesan boundaries, approximately 216,000 people (22.9% of the population) identify as Catholic. Of that number, 11% regularly practice their faith. Along with supporting evangelisation in a parish context, we also collaborate with Catholic Schools Broken Bay (44 schools representing nearly 17,000 students), and CatholicCare Broken Bay to assist with effective evangelisation initiatives in these unique settings. Recognising the need for proclaiming the Good News in particular contexts – to parishes, young people, families, children, adults, and ministry leaders – we have four teams: Parish Renewal and Discipleship Catholic Youth Broken Bay Life, Marriage and Family / Justice and Peace Confraternity of Christian Doctrine
1 Evangelisation Broken Bay also supports the Bishop’s vision by undertaking new and creative initiatives. The Pastoral Discernment Central Coast Project was a major project launched in 2021 to consult with people on the Central Coast to determine their future needs and mission. The final report, presented to the Bishop in 2022, provides a series of recommendations for the Central Coast as well as a framework for similar consultation and discernment in the Northern Beaches and North Shore Deaneries. Discover what Evangelisation Broken Bay has to offer by learning more about each team in the following pages.

Key Focus Areas for our Teams 1
C AT H O L I C YO U T H B R O K E N B AY The Catholic Youth Broken Bay (CYBB) team is a vibrant group of young leaders who engage with and support youth evangelisation within different communities of the Diocese: parishes, schools and ecclesial communities. CYBB connects and collaborates with youth ministries to provide communal pathways or events for the benefit of all groups by:
PA R I S H R E N E WA L A N D D I S C I P L E S H I P The Parish Renewal and Discipleship team has wide responsibility, assisting parishes and supporting clergy in developing effective renewal and evangelisation initiatives, forming missionary leaders, providing faith formation opportunities and resources, and supporting Sacramental/Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) leaders and processes. We offer support through:
14
Accompanying parishes in developing and implementing parish pastoral plans.
Providing a variety of faith formation opportunities and resources so that disciples can go deeper in their faith.
Forming missionary leaders who understand the call to holiness and mission of all the baptised.
Supporting Sacramental and Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) leaders of the Diocese with formation opportunities and resourcing.
Creating spaces and opportunities for the Gospel to be heard in a fresh and relevant way.
Supporting ecumenical and interfaith initiatives across the Diocese.
The Parish Renewal and Discipleship team seek to accompany parishes in their journey of renewal and invite parishes to be in touch.
Building youth ministry leadership in the Diocese through opportunities for formation, prayer, community and outreach. Developing skills for use in evangelisation. Supporting specific programs including Ad Astra and Glorious.
Supporting existing parish or school youth ministries using targeted and specific planning and creating new opportunities. This can take the form of one-on-one mentoring for youth ministers over a number of months, helping youth ministers establish a new youth group, providing talks, workshops, or prayer experiences, or offering ministry and safeguarding resources.
In these ways our team seeks to bring young people into a deeper relationship with Jesus in order that they may discern and live God’s call for their lives.
Providing pathways or events that may be beyond the reach of a single parish, school or ecclesial community. Our team provides young people with faith-pathways, school-parish links, leadership opportunities, pilgrimages and inspiring young adult events. The World Youth Day project is a significant example.

C O N F R AT E R N I T Y O F C H R I S T I A N D O C T R I N E We bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to Catholic students who attend public schools through the Ministry of Special Religious Education (SRE). The Diocese has 180 public schools within its boundaries and approximately 800 parish catechists (people who communicate the faith) who teach Catholic students on a regular basis. There are approximately 21,000 Catholic students in public schools in the Diocese.
We encourage an outward focus through:
Through our ministry we seek to affirm that every life is sacred.

Developing appropriate resources as needs arise on important and sometimes sensitive topics such as miscarriage.
Our role is to train and form parish catechists, provide support to Parish Priests and Coordinators, develop curriculum materials, and ensure that catechists minister to students in a safe environment and in compliance with Department of Education requirements.
We do this through: Supporting parishes in their mission to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through the Ministry of Special Religious Education (SRE) and assisting with compliance with Government legislation and NSW Department of Education requirements for the provision of SRE, including authorisation of catechists, Working with Children Check, and other screening processes. Development and provisioning of age-appropriate curriculum for Kindergarten to Y12, which is authorised by the Bishop of Broken Bay, and supported by digital classroom resources. Development and delivery of training and formation programs for SRE Coordinators and Catechists. Supporting parishes to recruit catechists through the delivery of quality recruitment resources and strategies. Collaboration with Diocesan agencies to connect Catholic families with parishes, including through Sacramental programs and youth ministry initiatives. Ensuring compliance with the NSW Education Act (1990) and the Policies and Procedures for religious education in NSW public schools. Advocating for the place of SRE in NSW public schools. We are an outreach ministry of evangelisation and catechesis, providing the opportunity for students to encounter Christ and grow in faith throughout their school life.
