Hello Again, Hunting through the books in our library, I found a real treasure. I remember buying it at a book sale on the front porch of the Village Library in Cooperstown. It must have been donated as part of the annual library fundraiser. It did not appear to have been part of the library collection. How it arrived there could be a story in itself. Now, 86 years after its publication date of 1926, we can peruse its pages, chat about its content, and glean a little about its original owners, not necessarily who they were but rather what made them tick. My mother often said, “Show me your friends, and I will tell you who you are.” The title of the songbook is “The Patron” published by Authority of the National Grange in April 1926 with a copyright date of 1925. On its first page, it is embossed with “Sprout Brook Grange P of H. Sprout Brook, N.Y. No 1121, organized January 2, 1905.” By reading “The Patron,” it seems as though we are enjoying a peek into the very heart and soul of those turn of the century grange families. Following my mother’s thoughts, we can say, “Listen” to what those grange members were singing about and it will show us who they really were. We can’t sit around a chunk stove and chat with those early grangers, but we can sort of join them by thumbing through the pages and create our own picture. The written words will speak to us. The first several pages were patriotic songs, starting with “The Star Spangled Banner.” “Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,” and ends with “Old Glory.” “Old Glory waves for me, I’ll shout and sing its praises over land and sea.” Followed by several grange degree songs such as the “Patrons Chain.” “Come patrons, let us join our hands around our sacred shrine, we pledge to each fraternal love as sacred and divine.” The last 50 pages were sacred songs which included one of my favorites, “The Church in the Wildwood.” “There’s a church in the valley by the wildwood. No lovelier place in the dale.” Reading through this little songbook painted a picture of why America has proven to hold a nearly sacred spot of its own in this world. Those grangers, mostly farmers, were real Americans. Loyal to our Constitution, to our flag, to each other. They joined hands in

family, friends, country and God. They were willing to stand and sing their belief. No wonder our country became so strong. They were our early neighbors, our forefathers. They lived near Sprout Brook. This morning my wife and I were having breakfast at Becky’s Café on Garden Road in West Palm Beach. Two truck drivers from Ames, Iowa were sitting at the table next to us. We spent a good half hour chatting. It was the morning after the Iowa caucus and naturally the conversation dwelt on the players in that high-priced race. At the chance of offending some of our readers, I still feel it is important to explain what they said. Remember these two men live in Ames, Iowa so naturally their thoughts were Iowan, not New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio—but Iowan. I asked, “What did you think of the outcome of the Iowa caucus?” One man seemed to be more willing to share his thoughts. The other appeared to agree with what he was saying. He said, to paraphrase, “We couldn’t be there to voice our opinions but I was pleased that Santorum lost by only 8 votes. I think he would make a great president. Furthermore, I don’t care who wins as long as he can beat Obama at election time.” He went on to say, “He—Obama—is not qualified to be President.” He continued, “I think he is full of horse apples.” In our valley we call “horse apples” road muffins, but his words were understood. Rather than offend, I will not voice any opinion other than to say these blue-collared American men voiced their opinions and their homes are in Ames, Iowa. Now for our weekly dose of blarney. My wife was shopping at the local grocery store. She said to Carm the grocer, “Give me a pound of those grapes—my husband likes them. Do you know if they’ve been sprayed with any kind of poison?” “No Sylvia,” he said. “You’ll have to get that at the hardware store.” Florida is famous for its alligators. My wife asked an old-time Floridian, “Is it true that an alligator won’t hurt you if you carry a torch?” The old man answered, “Well, I guess that depends on how fast you carry it.” Love is a short word with a long meaning—a stranger is a friend you haven’t met yet. To have a friend you must be friendly. The Bible says—If you knock on the door, Christ will answer it. Talk to him. He will listen.

Health & Fitness To Your Good Health by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Stroke: quick action saves brain cells Dear Dr. Donohue: Six years ago, my father died of a stroke. My mother tried to rouse him from bed, but he responded with confusion and was unable to speak. She called for an ambulance. He was in the hospital only four hours before he died. The doctor said he would have lived if he had gotten treatment sooner. My mother has felt guilty about this ever since. She lives with us now. I don’t want to miss a stroke if she has one. How do you recognize one, and what should be done right away in an emergency? — T.B. Answer: Nearly 900,000 strokes occur yearly in the United States, and of those victims, 200,000 die. Many of the survivors are left with great disabilities. Strokes come in two types: One is an ischemic (is-KEYmick) stroke, and the other is a hemorrhagic stroke. “Ischemic” means “deprived of blood.” It’s the more common kind of stroke, accounting for 80 percent of all strokes. The flow of blood to part of the brain is blocked by a clot in an artery. It’s the brain’s equivalent of a heart attack. The other 20 percent comes from bleeding in the brain, a hemorrhagic stroke. Signs of either kind of stroke include slurred speech, sud-

den confusion, numbness of the face, arm or leg, trouble seeing, dizziness and severe headache. Many advocate testing the person to decide if a stroke has occurred. Asking the affected person to stick out his or her tongue and seeing if it deviates to the side is one of those tests. Don’t waste time doing tests. Immediately call 911. Dear Dr. Donohue: My husband is very nearsighted and has to wear thick glasses. I’m not. I don’t wear glasses at age 50. We have four children. What are their chances of having to wear glasses? — E.P. Answer: Nearsightedness (myopia) indicates that the eyes can see things that are near. Nearsighted eyes don’t see distant objects clearly. It’s a common eye condition, and genetic involvement in it is high. If one parent is nearsighted, the children have a 24 percent chance of also being nearsighted. If both parents are nearsighted, the children’s risk increases to 48 percent. If neither parent is affected, the children have an 8 percent chance of developing nearsightedness. Factors other than genes have to be at work. (Don’t believe these percentages with unquestioning acceptance. I don’t.) (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

2011 Last Night by Elizabeth A. Tomlin What started out as a possible failure turned into a spectacular event with the help of a small, but dedicated and determined group of Canajoharie folks. The 2011 Last Night in Canajoharie, with the theme of “Looking up!” was termed a huge success. “I think it was really greatespecially since we started in November!” said Dick Rose, who along with Mayor Francis Avery, Phyllis Lapi, and Melanie Shibley was the backbone of the event. “I was very encouraged by the turnout!” Rose said. Heather Rockwell, advisor to the 2015 Freshman class at Canajoharie reported nearly running out of ingredients for the chicken and biscuit dinners, which 12 students and 3 adults cooked and served at the Canajoharie Firehouse. “Thankfully I had Kathy Kane and Tiffeny Brown Ayers to help!” Rockwell said gratefully. She credited the freshmen for their work. “These are good, responsible, enthusiastic kids, who really participate!”

Rockwell said of the students who assisted with the dinner. Lapi Co-chaired the event with Shibley. “Overall it was a very positive experience,” Lapi said. “We had a really enthusiastic crowd at the puppet show and the children were delight-

ed. Children had a chance to visit with Santa and thank him for his gifts.” Lapi and Shibley were stationed at the Arkell Library & Museum, where in addition to the Sleepy Santa and the Puppet People, children’s

Children gathered to enjoy the Mother Goose puppet show presented by the Puppet People as part of the many family activities offered around the Canajoharie community for the 2011 Last Night.

Canajoharie Mayor Francis Avery and Janet Avery celebrated the 2011 Last Night in Canajoharie with square dancing at the Canajoharie Firehouse where Linda Lee & the Fox Creek Band performed throughout the evening. Mayor Avery was instrumental in bringing the Last Night in Canajoharie to fruition.

The popular duet, the Dependents, performed at the library and drew a very large crowd. “There was a large cross-section of the community in attendance,” Lapi stated. “I was so pleased by the turnout of parents, children and grandparents- whole families.” Lapi also reported speaking to many people from out of town who attended the event, including people from Fort Ann and Scotia. Mayor Avery reported groups of people from Broadalbin, Schenectady and Gallupville who attended the dance at the firehouse where a performance by Linda Lee and the Fox Creek Band was well attended. a huge success McGlone said “it was the best night she’s (Mercato’s) ever had since she opened! I learned alot and have ideas on how to make then next ‘big’ night even better!” The acoustic duo Bentwood Rockers, Bill Ackerbauer and Roland Vinyard, performed for the evening at the Liberty Daycare Center on Church Street. “We had a great crowd for most of the performance,” said Ackerbauer. “I would guess we had about 30 people there for the last hour of the show.” According to Shibley the success of the event was due to the cooperation of the community and “our small, dedicated, diligent, faithful, Monday Morning Committee. We all had our assigned tasks and we all kept in communication.” “We also had great press,” said Lapi. “They got the word out!” Lapi also noted that the event was done with all donations, no grants or public funding. “It goes to show that the community can pull together on short notice and have a real celebration- people will come and attend!”

Canajoharie Freshmen Paige Shovelton (left) and Morgan Koelbl collected money for the chicken & biscuit dinners their classmates and advisors cooked up in the Canajoharie Firehouse kitchen. Fritz Ann Farm Carriage Rides reported “full wagon rides every time” they arrived back at the Arkell Museum & Library parking lot where they were stationed. “I was really surprised!” said Fritz Ann Surace. “Whole groups of people were getting off and on at the Cornell Cooperative Extension building. And we were picking people up and dropping them off at Mercato’s Restaurant as well.” “We were totally packed at Mercato’s!” said Michele McGlone. We tried to prepare as best we could by taking reservations and hiring a dishwasher and creating a special Retired Canajoharie School Superintendent, Richard Rose, and limited menu. A bright idea: check your vehicle’s lights and wipers As the days get shorter, it’s a bright idea to make sure your vehicle’s lights and wipers are working properly so you can be seen by others and your visibility is not compromised, advises the Car Care Council. Lights are normal wear items that require periodic inspection and replacement. The lighting system provides nighttime visibility; signals and alerts other drivers; and supplies light for viewing instruments and the vehicle’s interior. In addition to replacing dimming, rapidly blinking and nonfunctioning lights, the following tips can help keep you safe: • Keep headlights, tail lights and signal lights clean. External dirt and debris can dim operational lights from being seen by others. • Don’t overdrive your headlights; you should be able to stop inside the illuminated area. • If there is any doubt on whether or not your headlights should be on, turn them on.

Lights not only help you see better in early

twilight, they also make it easier for

other drivers to see you.

A new year is a great time to resolve to be a smarter, safer consumer. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has 10 resolutions that can help consumers fight scammers, prevent identity theft and save money in 2012. “Consumers can save time, trouble and their money if they create a budget, research businesses before they buy and learn to recognize common red flags of frequent scams,” said David Polino, BBB President. The following resolutions can help con-

sumers have a scam-free 2012: 1. Always check a business out with the BBB before you buy. Nearly 400,000 businesses meet BBB standards and are qualified to use an Accredited Business seal on their websites and at business locations. Visit www.bbb.org to find BBB Business Reviews for nearly 4 million businesses across North America. 2. Be skeptical of “job offers” that promise easy money. With high unemployment and long job

searches common, scammers are targeting people desperate to find jobs. Beware of any job offer, work-at-home scheme or business opportunity that promises big money for little work and no experience. 3. Always read the fine print — especially with “free” trial offers. Thousands of consumers complained to the BBB this year after signing up for a “free” trial offer online that resulted in repeated charges to their credit or debit cards, sometimes adding up to hundreds of dollars

5. Never wire money to someone you don’t know. Many scams require that the victim wire money back to the scammers. Scammers know that tracking money sent via MoneyGram or Western Union is extremely difficult. Once you’ve wired the money, it’s nearly impossible to get it back. 6. Fight identity theft. Shred paper documents that include sensitive financial data and dispose of computers, cell

every month. Read the terms and conditions of any “free” trial offer before handing over credit or debit card numbers. 4. Keep your computer safe. If you haven’t already done so, install anti-virus software on your computer and check regularly for software and operating system updates and patches. Don’t open attachments or click on links in emails unless you can confirm the email came from someone you trust.

phones and digital data safely. The BBB offers tips and checklists on what to shred, and hosts annual Secure Your ID events nationwide to help you stay safe. 7. Ask the BBB for help. File a complaint with your BBB if you have a disagreement with a business or have been ripped off by a scammer. 8. Create a budget and stick to it. Setting a budget can help you stay afloat in 2012. The BBB has advice on how to create a budget to help you get out of debt and stay out of debt at www.bbb.org. 9. Fight fake check fraud. Thanks to advances in printing technology, scammers have the ability to create professional-looking phony checks. Educate yourself on the common types of check fraud and be extremely wary of checks that come with claims that you’ve won the lottery, are eligible for a government grant or have landed a job as a secret shopper. These are almost always scams. 10. Get everything in writing. Don’t just take a company’s word for it. Get every verbal agreement in writing to limit misunderstandings between what you expect and what the business delivers. Consumers can learn how to protect themselves and find BBB Business Reviews of businesses or National charities by calling 800828-5000 or going online to www.bbb.org.
