Four mop company representatives interviewed recently by Broom, Brush & Mop Magazine all spoke of the ever-changing dynamics of the mop industry. These officials reported business in the mop segment has been up in some cases and up and down in others. One of the underlying themes of the interviews is that to compete in today’s marketplace, a company must bring its “A” game and be prepared to adjust to the marketplace.

production quickly,” Lafitte said. “As a result, we are able to make any kind of specialized product with very quick turnaround times. Five to seven working days is how long it takes to turnaround even our specialty orders. For us, our focus remains on those specialty items, as well as private product labeling for our customers. “We know we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our customers. We try to always operate in an ethical manner. We believe everything we do is above board.” In meeting its goals to quickly and efficiently meet customers’ needs, Lafitte Mop is highly automated. “Our mop head machines are all computerized,” Lafitte said. “We also put in a new packaging line the past couple of years and that has helped.” While the cotton Lafitte Mop uses is inherently environmentally friendly, the company’s GreenWise line continues to be a success on the “green” front. “The GreenWise line is doing real well, although right now people are mostly buying for price,” Lafitte said. “Most of the yarns we use are recycled products. Cotton is an environmentally friendly product anyway because it very quickly biodegrades once placed in a landfill.” For restroom and general purpose floor cleaning, GreenWise wet mops are made with Enviro-Color Green and Enviro-Color White yarns, which are spun using 100 percent post-industrial and post-consumer recycled raw material along with post-consumer polyester bottle flakes. Lafitte Mop’s GreenWise dust mops, meanwhile, are made from recycled materials such as pure green plastic bottle fibers and post-consumer rayon/polyester. The company’s Natural Dust Mop is made using 100 percent cotton yarn with cotton canvas backing. Also included in the GreenWise line are “bamwood” handles, which have replaced hardwoods in many applications. Bamwood handles are constructed of 65 percent bamboo and 35 percent reclaimed hardwood with antioxidant properties to deter bacterial growth. As the U.S. economy has made some strides since the Great Recession years, it remains on the sluggish side. The slow recovery has had an impact on Lafitte Mop. “Order sizes seem to be somewhat smaller. Another situation that has affected us here in Georgia is some of our schools are shifting from an in-house janitorial staff — and consequently the janitorial staff buying products — to using a contract cleaning service,” Lafitte said. “The contract cleaners bring their products with them. Many of our customers deal in school bids, and much of that business is becoming no longer available to them. “School budgets have been cut. Our customer service philosophy has always been to take care of the customer and we fix problems when they arise. “Also, a person answers our phones. to get voice mail, except by request. We have always been customer service driven. That is why we were always one of the first to offer new technology. When fax machines came out, we were one of the first to have fax-in orders. When email came along, ETC was one of the first ones to take email orders. We focus very heavily on making ourselves accessible and to be ‘human’ to our customers instead of just a ‘faceless’
organization. “For us, this next year is all about taking care of customers, especially since there has been some consolidation take place in our industry.” ETC’s customer service effort also includes not having minimum order requirements. “We still do not implement minimum orders,” Demetriades said. “We have tried to hold fast to this to help the smaller distributors. They want to know what their price is total. They don’t want to have to deal with a pallet charge or an add-on for this or added freight costs. They want to know their prices, so they can make their adjustments and sell to their customers at that price. Our goal is to be customer service oriented and customer friendly.” Looking ahead, Demetriades spoke of some of the challenges ETC faces to remain prosperous, one of which is in the area of raw materials. “Raw material prices have been reasonable,” Demetriades said. “On the whole, I think that has been hard for people in our industry because we have had to deal with increased costs with less margin. I’m sure everybody has the same problem. For example, the price of yarn, or whatever, goes up and to avoid passing the costs on, a company must find ways to handle the increased costs internally.” “The biggest hindrance to ETC and the industry as a whole — I’m going to say the most politically incorrect thing — is the government. I
think the continuing printing of currency to fulfill our debts is going to cause huge problems for our country. The more we devalue our currency, the more we are going to see inflation and eventually there will be a huge problem. The country can’t continue to run up debts. “We are proud to service our customers. We are proud to serve this industry. We have been in the janitorial segment now for nearly 35 years. ne of the largest producers of mops in the state of Wisconsin is Algoma Mop Manufacturers, of Algoma, WI, loc ated on Lake Michigan just east of Green Bay. Founded in 1926, the company was originally known as Algoma Mop Co. In 1981, East Shore Industries, Inc., purchased the company, changing its name to Algoma Mop Manufacturers. East Shore is a not-for-profit organization that provides services for adults with disabilities. Continued On Page 26

East Shore purchased Algoma Mop to provide a steady source of work opportunities for the people it serves. “Working to make a difference” is Algoma Mop’s motto. The company employs about 20 people and produces more than 200 types of mops, including many that are customized to customers’ specifications. In addition to manufacturing mops, the company produces dust mop oil treatments and provides accessories such as hardware, handles, frames and laundry nets. “Business has been fairly flat through the first three months of this year, but, nonetheless, sales are up 6 percent,” said Algoma Mop CEO Ron Opicka. “We have a product that is made with mop yarn, but it is not really a mop. It is a weep vent for the construction industry. A weep vent is a plastic tube with a piece of yarn on the end to remove the water between the inside wall and the brick of a structure to let out moisture. Some of our growth is coming from this product, while everything else is fairly stagnate. “We also do work for a company in Algoma that makes and sells rope hammocks. The hammock business is fairly flat now that many are made overseas. There used to be a rehab center in Green Bay, which is 30 miles to the west of us, that once had $1 million a year in sales for rope hammocks. “We also do some subcontract work for other

companies, which has been fairly steady. Part of the subcontract world is tied to the construction industry and when that slumped, a lot of our sales with a product we assembled for a company fell by the wayside as well.” Nonetheless, Algoma Mop’s commitment to producing quality products for the janitorial, maintenance and foodservice industries has earned the company nationwide contracts. In recent years, Algoma Mop has expanded its primary service area

beyond Wisconsin to include a customer base of more than 600 companies nationwide. Algoma’s efforts include supplying more than 200 restaurants that are part of a nationwide chain. Algoma Mop’s ability to produce products on a small scale has allowed the company to gain business that larger manufacturers either do not want or are unable to accommodate. “I think our products have a little more value, in my estimation. Our mops are really durable products. They are made with yarns from Jones Companies (of Humboldt, TN) and Lemieux Spinning Mill (of St. Ephrem, QC), both quality companies,” Opicka said. “We have a customer in Wisconsin that is in the hospital rental business, and it launders our Endurance Mops and they just last and last. We are more high-end than the cheaper end, cut-end kind of thing. I would say 80 percent of our business is loopedend mops.” Other than supervisors, Algoma Mop’s labor pool is 100 percent people with disabilities. The company helps individuals overcome barriers to work and modifies some workstations allowing them to perform job tasks. The company credits its employees with putting it on the map. “We are very proud of the work our employees perform, and they are even prouder,” Opicka said. “These individuals have developed a lot of skills and, in some cases, we have adapted equipment to their needs. most cases, they are able to sew just like an individual without a disability. We all have a disability one way or another. We don’t separate people from each other from a disability standpoint, because we all have one. There is no difference in people. We just sometimes have to adapt some of our equipment in a different way. They are very dedicated and proud of the work they do, and somewhere in every mop there is a smile. “Like most companies, we believe if the customer is not happy, we better know why and we better correct it, because if we don’t, somebody else will. We have been very focused on customer service since we went into the business and that is basically why we build a more upscale quality product. We don’t want to

be sending products out that are leaner and thinner and not as high quality as they could be. We have always stayed with higher tensile and quality threads, quality workmanship and quality control inspections that come at the end of the manufacturing cycle. This is paramount to keeping customers and staying in business. We bought the business in 1981, and we have been able to hang around in spite of some of the bigger boys in the world going south.” One challenge that Algoma Mop faces as a community rehabilitation program that more traditional companies do not, is finding and maintaining funding sources. As funding sources seem to be dwindling each year due to tighter budgets, Algoma Mop reinvests the profits made from its mop sales back into the organization. This helps the company to continue to assist people with disabilities in the community. “The company does receive some funds from the state and federal government for providing services to people with disabilities that are not related to the regular business world,” Opicka said. “In addition, although I haven’t done an analysis on this issue, transportation costs seem to be rising. We have a state use contract with the state of Wisconsin and a sizeable piece of our business continues to be a result of that contract. ith its motto “Quality never costs as much as the money it saves,” Newell & Sons, Inc., of Roxboro, NC, is in its second generation — and poised to enter its third — of family ownership. Newell & Sons, along with its sister company, Roxboro Broom Works, (in its third generation of family ownership and poised to enter its fourth) is one of the oldest family businesses in North Carolina. The Roxboro Broom Works dates to 1920, and, in 1926, Bruce Newell purchased the company, according to Newell & Sons President David Newell. Bruce Newell was David Newell’s grandfather. “My father, Henry Newell, started Newell & Sons, which has been involved in various areas, but now primarily makes wet mops,” David Newell said. “I started the wet mop version of the company in 1977 when I got out of college (Appalachian State University). My brother, Henry Newell Jr. (North Carolina State University), runs the broom factory and I run the

mop operation.” David Newell reported that mop sales have been down. “A lot of it has to do with the mops lasting longer,” Newell said. “Traditionally, one of our biggest areas of sales is government bids. They have become so competitive, that there is not much profit in them anymore, but we still seek them. We don’t sell on the retail market as we deal with distributors.” One of the company’s goals, and what it considers its duty, is to help the planet by using and recycling materials. Despite the company’s commitment to ecological friendly products and techniques, Newell & Sons’ customer base has not been as enthusiastic when it comes to using green products, according to Newell. About 90 percent of the company’s mops are made with from 60 to 80 percent reclaimed materials, reducing by thousands of pounds the amount of waste going into a landfill. In addition, Newell & Sons purchases waste materials from other companies to make its patent pending “Microwrap Mop,” made of 100 percent reclaimed materials. The Microwrap mops come in two types — cotton and rayon. The cotton microwrap is a loop mop made from 100 percent reclaimed, multicolor microfiber cotton material. The rayon microwrap mop is the same as the cotton version, but made from a blend of reclaimed microfiber rayon materials. Newell & Sons list three positive things the

The product has a different look and people are just very hesitant to change. 650 RPM (1,300 tufts per minute), brushes with 138 tufts are produced at the rate of 600 pieces per hour. The indoor broom that was demonstrated at the last InterBrush show in Freiburg, Germany, requires a mere 50 percent of the weight in polypropylene of a regular brush block. Additionally, there are savings in filament waste since no trimming is needed and, of course, there is no wire. In this world of high energy costs and petroleum based materials, such savings cannot be considered trivial. These combined attributes have the potential to revolutionize the brush manufacturing industry. The TCU-CNC machines are capable of handling brushes from nailbrushes to 24inch brooms. The modular concept, which permits a machine to be reconfigured for vastly different brushes, has now been well demonstrated. Moreover, these machines are available from being manually loaded all the way to fully automated production cells, equipped with fully automatic handle feeders and industrial robots. The TCU-CNC range of machines has been further extended by the introduction of the TCUSL/CNC and the TCU-T/CNC. The TCUSL/CNC machine, with its fiber picking system and 95 mm stroke, is able to run at speeds up to 1,000 tufts per minute, even with filaments as long as 420 mm (16-inches) unfolded. The TCU-T/CC machine, with long stroke filling tools that are lined with a ceramic material and sturdy carousel with heavy-duty support in the drilling and filling stations, is designed for arduous applications with drill sizes to 12 mm, and the use of heavy vegetable fibers. The newest refinements to the TCU line of machines are a faster indexing of the turret, higher speeds of well over 1,400 tufts per minute in some cases and a wider range of automation options. The single-header SCU will handle disk brushes as well as plate brushes, and can be converted to a household brush machine in a matter of minutes. The double-header VCU is a high-performance versatile machine for the production of all kinds of brushware. It has 5 axis CNC control and will make brooms up to 24-inches in one operation, or 36-inches in two operations. The brush holder frames are easy to change, so the machine can be used for the production of dish brushes, roller brushes or toilet brushes. Toothbrush Production Lines and Work Centers: Boucherie has developed a variety of toothbrush manufacturing equipment. Production machines range from the very affordable TB3A/CNC, through the TB3-TS and TB3-FS, which are economically priced, full production lines for less demanding applications, to the highly automated and sophisticated TB3-FM and TB3FM/L. All of these single header machines now run at continuous speeds up to 1,000 tufts per minute. The new concept of the TB5-FM machine is yet another world’s first, according to Boucherie. The filling tool runs on ball bearings, and has very few,

and light, moving parts to make it simple to maintain and make the basic tool virtually wearfree. Futhermore, the machine features reduced handling of the products to optimize efficiency and product quality. For the highest production, Boucherie offers the double-headed TB32-flexi cell, which can make up to 70 brushes per minute when the 2 filling tools run in parallel, or for complex brushes with 2 different hole sizes when the filling tools run sequentially. This flexibility is build into the concept of the machine, and can be used effortlessly. Anchorless Toothbrush Production Lines and Work Centers: In the field of machinery for the oral care industry, with the introduction of the AFT/CNC machine, Boucherie clearly established a leadership position in anchorless technology, but with the new AMR machine, Boucherie is making a giant step to bring anchorless toothbrush production to more toothbrush makers. The AFT/CNC is the first machine for tufting toothbrushes without using anchors. Block tufts, strip tufts and various combinations of tuft angles widen the range of design options for the toothbrush heads. The AFT/CNC features automatic handle feeding, Windows-based CNC controls, and pre-endrounding of bristles. No trimming is required. AFT technology may now be used to manufacture toothbrushes with tapered filaments. Available too is a less automated version
of this machine: the AFT/SD line, in which the handle and bristle infeed are accomplished manually. The AMR machine also features Boucherie’s inline pre-endrounding system, and will make the brushes that are now manufactured on complex anchor-set production cells at a reduced cost, with a higher endrounding quality, and at least at the same speed. The AFT-IMT is the world’s first commercially available in-mould technology for the production of toothbrushes, according to Boucherie. Preendrounded filaments are picked and arranged in their final configuration prior to being transferred into a mold where the brush head and handle are over-molded to produce the finished product. IDM Machine: The IDM is a compact carousel machine for the high-speed production of interdental and mascara brushes. It is now possible to produce up to 65 high quality brushes per minute, even while using the smallest wire sizes, since the brush remains in the same clamp throughout the whole production process. The IDM is available in versions with spool feed of the nylon, or with fiber boxes for pre-cut filaments. An integrated vision system for the automatic inspection of finished brushes is also available. Injection Molds: Boucherie produces single component molds, multi-component molds with manual or automatic transfer, and multi-component, high cavitation, valve gated, hot runner stack molds.

IMPORTS / EXPORTS IMPORT TOTALS UP FOR FIRST TWO MONTHS OF 2013 — EXPORTS DOWN By Rick Mullen, Broom, Brush & Mop Associate Editor U.S. government trade figures for the first two months of 2013 indicate raw material imports were up in two categories outlined: hog bristle and metal handles, compared to the first two months of 2012. For February 2013, raw material imports were also up in two categories outlined: brush backs and metal handles, compared to February. Import totals for the first two months of 2013 were up in all four finished goods categories outlined: brooms of broom corn valued at more than 96 cents, brooms and brushes of vegetable material, toothbrushes and paintbrushes, compared to the same time period in 2012. In February 2013, three categories outlined recorded increases: brooms of broom corn valued at more than 96 cents, brooms and brushes of vegetable material and paintbrushes, compared to February 2012.
RAW MATERIAL IMPORTS Hog Bristle The United States imported 27,294 kilograms of hog bristle in February 2013, down 6 percent from 29,109 kilograms imported in February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 88,841 kilograms of hog bristle were imported, a 35 percent increase from 65,857 kilograms imported during the first two months of 2012. China sent all of the hog bristle to the United States during the first two months of 2013. The average price per kilogram for February 2013 was $21.28, up 152 percent from the average price per kilogram for February 2012 of $8.46. The average price per kilogram for the first two months of 2013 was $12.60, up 35 percent from the average price per kilogram of $9.36 for the first two months of 2012. Broom And Mop Handles The import total of broom and mop handles during February 2013 was 833,312, down 12 percent from 947,991 for February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 2.1 million broom and mop handles were imported, down 5 percent from 2.2 million for the first two months of 2012. During the first two months of 2013, the United States received 678,839 broom and mop handles from Brazil. The average price per handle for February 2013 was 69 cents, down 5 percent from the average price for February 2012 of 73 cents. The average price for the first two months of 2013 was 75 cents, down 12 percent from 85 cents for the first two months of 2012. Brush Backs February 2013 imports of brush backs totaled 454,682, up 31 percent from 346,458 for February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 679,311 brush backs were imported, down 32 percent from 1.1 million for the first two months of 2012. Canada shipped 479,185 brush backs to the United States during the first two months of 2013, while Sri Lanka shipped 194,126. The average price per brush back was 45 cents during February 2013, up 5 percent from the average price for February 2012 of 43 cents. For the first two months of 2013, the average price per brush back was 47 cents, the same as for the first two months of 2012.

Metal Handles The import total of metal handles during February 2013 was 2 million, up 82 percent from 1.1 million for February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 4.1 million metal handles were imported, up 58 percent from 2.6 million for the first two months of 2012. During the first two months of 2013, Italy sent 3 million metal handles to the United States, while China sent 587,854. The average price per handle for February 2013 was 67 cents, down 32 percent from 98 cents for February 2012. The average price for the first two months of 2013 was 63 cents, down 36 percent from 99 cents for the the first two months of 2012. FINISHED GOODS IMPORTS Brooms Of Broom Corn Valued At More Than 96 Cents The United States imported 629,397 brooms of broom corn valued at more than 96 cents per broom during February 2013, up 1 percent from 637,627 for February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 1.34 million brooms of broom corn were imported, up 8 percent from 1.2 million imported during the first two months of 2012. Mexico shipped 1.31 million brooms to the United States during the first two months of 2013, while Honduras sent 26,496. The average price per broom for February 2013 was $2.38, down 4 percent from the average price for February 2012 of $2.47. The average price per broom for the first two months of 2013 was $2.37, down 2 percent from $2.43 for the first two months of 2012. Brooms & Brushes Of Vegetable Material The import total of brooms and brushes of vegetable material during February 2013 was 201,440, up 4 percent from 193,879 brooms and brushes imported during February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 369,503 brooms and brushes were imported, up 11 percent from 331,491 imported during the first two months of 2012. Sri Lanka exported 200,731 brooms and brushes to the United States during the first two months of 2013, while China sent 53,462. The average price per unit for February 2013 was $1.28, up 12 percent from $1.14 for February 2012. The average price for the first two months of 2013 was $1.26, up 10 percent from the average price recorded for the first two months of 2012 of $1.15. Toothbrushes The United States imported 80.8 million toothbrushes in February 2013, down 11 percent from 91.1 million imported in February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 190.4 million toothbrushes were imported, up less than 1 percent from 190.3 million imported during the first two months of 2012. China sent 144.8 million toothbrushes to the United States during the first two months of 2013. The average price per toothbrush for February 2013 was 23 cents, up 44 percent from the average price for February 2012 of 16 cents. The average price for the first two months of 2013 was 21 cents, up 67 percent from 17 cents for the first two months of 2012. Paintbrushes U.S. companies imported 19.4 million paintbrushes during February 2013, up 76 percent from 11 million paintbrushes imported during February 2012. Paintbrush imports for the first two months of 2013 were 38.7 million, up 33 percent from 29.2 million recorded for the first two months of 2012. China shipped 31.8 million paintbrushes to the United States during the first two months of 2013, while Indonesia exported 3.5 million and Costa Rica shipped 2 million. The average price per paintbrush for February 2013 was 28 cents, down 20 percent from the average price for February 2012 of 35 cents. EXPORTS Export totals for the first two months of 2013 were down in two categories outlined: broom and brushes of vegetable materials and paintbrushes, compared to the first two months of 2012. In February 2013, three categories outlined reported decreases: broom and brushes of vegetable materials, artist brushes and paintbrushes, compared to February 2012. Brooms & Brushes Of Vegetable Materials The United States exported 6,336 dozen brooms and brushes of vegetable materials during February 2013, down 33 percent from the February 2012 total of 9,480 dozen. Exports of brooms and brushes of vegetable materials during the first two months of 2013 were 11,878 dozen, down 72 percent from 41,763 dozen for the first two months of 2012. The United States sent 4,011 dozen brooms and brushes to Canada during the first two months of 2013 and 3,227 dozen to Brazil. The average price per dozen brooms and brushes was $49.97 in February 2013, up 64 percent from $30.50 for February 2012. The average price per dozen brooms and brushes for the first two months of 2013 was $45.11, an increase of 36 percent from the average price per dozen for the first two months of 2012 of $33.23. Toothbrushes During February 2013, the United States exported 14.4 million toothbrushes, up 55 percent from the total recorded in February 2012 of 9.3 million. During the first two months of 2013, 33 million toothbrushes were exported, up 69 percent from 19.5 million exported during the first two months of 2012. The United States exported 17.6 million toothbrushes to Canada during the first two months of 2013. The average price per toothbrush for February 2013 was 38 cents, down 32 percent from the average price for February 2012 of 56 cents. The average price per toothbrush for the first two months of 2013 was 42 cents, down 26 percent from 57 cents for the first two months of 2012. Artist Brushes February 2013 exports of artist brushes totaled 547,974, down 36 percent from the February 2012 total of 849,963 artist brushes. During the first two months of 2013, 1.4 million artist brushes were exported, up 8 percent from 1.3 million for the first two months of 2012. Canada received 783,961 artist brushes during the first two months of 2013, while Mexico imported 142,612. The average price per artist brush was $3.15 during February 2013, up 22 percent from the average price for February 2012 of $2.59. For the first two months of 2013, the average price per artist brush was $2.73, down 5 percent from the average price for the first two months of 2012 of $2.88. Paintbrushes The export total of paintbrushes during February 2013 was 96,818, down 38 percent from 155,390 for February 2012. During the first two months of 2013, 191,638 paintbrushes were exported, down 36 percent from 301,455 during the first two months of 2012. Canada imported 71,338 paintbrushes from the United States during the first two months of 2013. The average price per paintbrush for February 2013 was $18.96, up 75 percent from $10.85 for February 2012. It would be nearly impossible to list every single type of raw material used to produce brushes, mops, brooms and related items now available in today’s marketplace. From natural and synthetic fiber/filament to resin, handles, yarn and more, a healthy supply of raw materials is paramount to the success of North American and international manufacturers alike. Broom, Brush & Mop Magazine talked with three company representatives in mid-May to learn how the current supply of key raw materials is influencing their businesses as the summer season approaches.
Abtex Corporation President Mark Fultz reported that raw materials needed by his company, located in Dresden, NY, to help produce its lineup of abrasive filament brushes remain readily available. “We are unique compared to many other brush companies in that our sole focus is pretty much directed to abrasive filament brushes. There are really just a few components that go into our products. This includes polyurethane and epoxy compounds as well as abrasive nylon filament,” Fultz said. He noted that one challenge regarding the supply of abrasive nylon filament is that there remain just a limited number of suppliers for this material. However, two main suppliers do have production facilities located in the United States which helps. “The availability of abrasive nylon filament is typically not an issue. Generally, however, there are fairly long lead times associated with this filament, but we have been able to manage our business around these lead times,” Fultz said. Meanwhile, the compound material used by Abtex Corporation for the
backing of the company’s brush products is comprised typically of either epoxy or polyurethane. “There are numerous suppliers for this (type) of material, and it’s not been a problem for us to attain,” Fultz said. “The material we use is custom-formulated for our specific needs. We work with a couple of suppliers.” He added pricing for the different raw materials that Abtex Corporation uses has been relatively stable. “There are certainly price increases that come at us occasionally, but they’re not part of volatile pricing situations,” Fultz said. He noted that an increase in North American new car and truck sales has been a plus for Abtex Corporation, when asked about overall business at his company. “The majority of our customers produce components that will ultimately end up in an automobile. So, as automotive sales have picked up, our business has enjoyed success along the way. Our products are very technical and tend to be customized for specific applications and specific customers,” Fultz said. “This level of customization — where we work to understand what our customers’ applications are and then design a brush solution specifically for those applications — is a big reason why we are still in business after 33 years. “As long as the economy continues to recover and manufacturing in general increases, then I see our business continuing to grow. It’s important that we invest in processes and personnel to keep up with growing opportunities that are in front of us. We are investing for the future.” Purchasing raw materials from different parts of the world is a strong focus for officials at Bruin Plastics, located in Glendale, RI. The company has been a producer of industrial textiles since 1964. It provides mildew and rot resistant VCM® (vinyl coated mesh) for wet mop head bands in a variety of colors and slit to a customer’s specific width requirements. “We provide an improved product for customers who want a little more durability, abrasion resistance, etc.,” Bruin Plastics Vice President Steve Angelone said. “We can also add additional antimicrobial additives to help extend the life of the finished product.” The main raw materials needed by Bruin Plastics are polyester yarn,

PVC resin, and various types of pigment to make certain colors. “The yarn is knitted into a scrim, while the PVC resin is blended with a plasticizer and other petrol-chemical additives. It is all then blended together and goes through our coating process before becoming a finished product. We are a vertically-integrated company,” Angelone said. He added that the availability of these raw materials usually is not a major challenge, although changes do take place. “There have been changes, as of late, with the yellow pigments that we use. This has driven that particular pigment’s price up,” Angelone explained. “Basically, we are using a more organic-based pigment versus heavy metal-based. Certain pigments are harder to come by. For the most part, however, the supply of raw materials that we use has been stable. These materials come from different parts of the world.” Angelone classified overall business as of late as being on the sluggish side. However, he remains cautiously optimistic for the near future. “We sell to customers located all over the world, with our primary market being in the United States and Canada. I think there are a lot of unanswered questions for many U.S. business owners, such as how ObamaCare will impact their companies,” he said. “I don’t think anyone really knows what (ObamaCare) will really mandate. Therefore, many business owners are going to proceed with caution due to the possible impact of this (health care) bill.” Angelone added that his company sells to many different markets, including the U.S. government and military. Therefore, how the current government sequester is impacting the budgets of these customers is also a concern. “There are certain obstacles putting some business on hold at this point,” he said. Despite these challenges, Angelone said he is grateful for his company’s strong customer base, and is looking forward to helping Bruin Plastics celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014. “We always try to re-engineer our products to be more relevant for our customer base,” Angelone said. The supply of hardwood and softwood handles from Brazil remains strong, according to Northeast Ltda. President Michael Grossmann. The company, which is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, provides FSC

(Forest Stewardship Council) and non-FSC wooden handles from the South American country. Many of these handles are imported into the United States and used in mop and broom production. “We supply Tauarî hardwood and pine softwood for the cleaning industry. We also supply wooden tool handles, etc.,” Grossmann said. “Pine is a forested wood in Brazil and a renewable resource. There is plenty of supply available. “Since Brazil is a major paper supplier, with pine and eucalyptus being the main woods for the paper industry, there is a large amount of planted pine forests in the country. Pine can be used for furniture and a number of other products, but the original plantations were started by huge paper companies. Trees are harvested (to make paper) when they are only 3 or 4 years old. For our purposes (in handle production), the trees have to be at least 10 to 12 years old.” Grossmann said Tauarî hardwood used for the production of wooden handles in Brazil comes from tropical forests. Northeast Ltda. works directly with another Brazilian company, Malinski, which has multi-year harvesting contracts in place concerning both FSC and non-FSC forests. He added that Tauarî is often used as a substitute for ramin, a wood found in Southeast Asia that was quite popular for handle production. Ramin, however, was listed several years ago as an endangered species. “Because Tauarî cannot be harvested during the rainy season, which in Brazil runs from approximately November through April, Malinski keeps a large inventory available of this wood. This requires a lot of working capital,” Grossmann said. A typical lead time of wooden handles from Brazil to North America is six to eight weeks, he added. Pricing, meanwhile, has been steady as of late. “A number of years ago the Brazilian real became very strong, which negatively affected prices in U.S. dollars,” Grossmann said. “Over the last year or so, however, the real has been very stable. It should stay that way for the foreseeable future. We (at Northeast Ltda.) don’t see any major movement in price right now.” Grossmann classified overall business at Northeast Ltda., as being “excellent” as of late. “As the American economy comes back, especially in construction, we think this will positively influence our market moving forward,” he said.
