BBM MAGAZINE | May/June 2021
By Rick Mullen | Broom, Brush & Mop Associate Editor
As the country approaches the summer of 2021, companies have been dealing with how to conduct business during the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year. Much has changed in the marketplace and there have been challenges. There have also been lessons learned, one of which is the importance of cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting.
Broom, Brush & Mop recently spoke with executives from three manufacturers of squeegee products, who shared how their respective companies have fared during the past year and how critical the products they offer are in fighting harmful microbes. hen the COVID-19 pandemic began to ramp up in the early spring of 2020, like many companies across the board, Haviland Corporation, of Linn, MO, saw a downturn in business. Fortunately, in just a couple of months, the company’s sales began to rebound. “By late May 2020, business was back to near normal,” said Executive Vice President Alice Andrews. “We have also been very fortunate to see above normal levels of business for 2021. Our staff has really rallied to meet demand, and we have hired some additional team members, as well.” When the pandemic first hit last year, Haviland Corporation took measures to keep employees safe and healthy. PPEs (personal protective equipment) was made available for all employees and social distancing protocols were put in place. In addition, people were very conscientious about being physically healthy before coming to work. “We have been fortunate to avoid many of the COVID pitfalls,” Andrews said. “Our staff has worked very hard to

maintain a clean and safe work environment. Because of staff diligence, and vaccinations becoming more available, some of the early protocols put in place by the company have been dropped.” As companies have dealt with the pandemic for the past year, there have been insights and some lessons have been learned. While there have been longer lead times during the pandemic, Andrews doesn’t expect any disruptions moving forward. “We work very closely with our raw material suppliers to forecast and make sure we have everything in the pipeline that we need,” Andrews said. “COVID seems to have opened everyone’s eyes to the importance of cleanliness. We are seeing a surge in customer demand for products. We are also gaining a new perspective. Just because something looks and smells clean, it does not always mean it is safe. “Our Microbe Spiker squeegee and swipe material is a good example of a way to clean beyond appearance. It uses nanotechnology. The antimicrobial material can be squeegeed across BBM MAGAZINE | May/June 2021

a floor or wiped down a surface without the use of water or disinfectants, attracting up to 99.9 percent of microbes on to the Microbe Spiker surface.” The Microbe Spiker blue material is a closed-cell foam rubber that is embedded with an anti-microbial agent that attracts and attacks surface microbes through a physical means. Because the agent is embedded into the entirety of the foam, it does not lose potency over time. The Alice Andrews microbes that are released, when cleaning the material, are non-viable, thus leaving no opportunity for cell adaptation or development of microbial resistance and minimizing the creation of “Super Bugs.” Haviland Corporation was founded in 1946 by Warren and Van Haviland in St. Louis, MO. In 1974 the company moved to Linn, MO. In the company’s 75 years of manufacturing, it has grown to produce many types of floor and window squeegees. Squeegee sizes range from 3 to 72 inches, which includes straight and curved style frames. Haviland squeegees are manufactured for the janitorial, industrial, paving, food service/processing, agricultural,

machine repair and consumer segments. Forty years ago, the company was the first to begin manufacturing aftermarket replacement blades, gaskets and splash guards for floor machines. The paving and roofing hand tools division was added more than 30 years ago, offering waterbrooms, serrated squeegees, U-shaped crack fillers and more. The company’s blades are made with premium compounds in Jan Haviland blends such as neoprene, red and tan gum, urethanes, EPDM, and specialty blends. The blades vary in flexibility, color and thickness. Haviland Corporation offers unique rubbers that may not be available from “one size fits all” suppliers, according to the company. A couple of newer products that have been well received by customers are AQUALIR Pro rubber and the Quick Flip Squeegee. AQUALIR Pro blade material is specially compounded and formulated with a natural rubber compound system, exclusively sold by Haviland Corporation. The material was developed for applications where heavy-duty impact and wear

~ Jan Haviland resistance, in harsh real-world environments, are required, according to the company. “AQUALIR Pro rubber is a good alternative to some of the other options. It has really good tensile strength capabilities,” Andrews said. The Quick Flip squeegee, one of Andrews’ favorite products, has two blades, one on either side. The types of blades depend on the task at hand. The company says this helps eliminate downtime and saves money, because if a different blade is needed for a particular type of flooring or detergent, the enduser can just “flip” it over. There is no need to have two separate squeegees. “We have some new product innovations in the works,” Andrews said, “but they are not ready for release at this time. We are looking forward to attending the upcoming World of Concrete 2021 show scheduled for June 8-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and the ISSA Show North America Nov. 15-19, 2021, also at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The company takes great pride in its ability to be flexible. “We really have a knowledgeable and trained staff that takes a proactive approach in creating partnerships with our customers,” owner/President Jan Haviland said. “With the flexibility in our products, this allows for customization to meet customers’ needs, including what type of squeegee rubber will work the best to meet their needs. “The ultimate goal is to develop strong, trusted relationships with our customers, based on ethical business practices and delivering on our promises. Our mission is to continue
to manufacture Haviland products in the United States, and to create jobs and innovations to keep our country strong.”
Looking ahead, Jan Haviland said the dynamics of every administration could potentially have an impact on the company. “We’ll wait and see,” she said. “But challenges promote growth, and we look forward to meeting new challenges and to continue to grow.” Contact: Haviland Corporation, 200 S. hen COVID-19 hit Michigan last spring, Dorden Squeegees, of Detroit, immediately took steps to keep employees safe and healthy in its manufacturing facility. CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) protocols were followed, masks were issued and hand sanitizers and alcohol wipes were made available. In addition, the company’s large facility made it easier to accomplish social distancing. “We are continuing to follow CDC guidelines and we have gone above and beyond with sanitizing,” said President/Managing Director Bruce Gale. “Although many employees have been vaccinated, we are remaining very cautious and continue to wear masks. In addition, employees are able to stay six feet apart as they have designated work areas, and are not on top of each other.” COVID forced many Bruce Gale companies to shut down entirely, or lay off people, however, Dorden Squeegee was deemed an essential business due to its customer base and remained up and running. “We put our heads down, put our masked noses to the grindstone, kept working and remained open,” Gale said. Initially, sales of squeegees were down modestly because of the pandemic, but now they are bouncing back. “Business has been good,” Gale said. “We are getting back to the 2019 numbers. We have had some bumps in the road. We had some outdated equipment, and it has taken us longer to update than we anticipated. Nonetheless, we are doing pretty well.” The pandemic has taken a terrible toll on the country. As of May 25, there were 33.9 million cases of COVID reported, accounting for 605,021 deaths. If there is a silver lining, perhaps it is the public’s heightened awareness of the importance of cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting. In this vein, Dorden Squeegee offers some effective cleaning tools. “We offer some antibacterial squeegees,” Gale said. The company’s gray vinyl blades are non-absorbent and antibacterial. Vinyl is a closed-cell material that is also nonmarking. Because bacteria doesn’t grow on the gray vinyl material, it works well for hospitals, restaurants, clean rooms, processing plants and packing houses. Dorden offers industrial and commercial-grade window squeegees. They are: Industrial “C” Series — A premium, heavy-duty, one-piece aluminum channel frame holds a specially-extruded black rubber blade in place to create, not just a window wiping tool, but a multi-use tool. The squeegees are designed for maintenance and janitorial activities such as cleaning countertops and other flat surfaces. They are especially good for use on equipment in factories where oils and other fluids are a concern. They are also great for use on wet grinding machines and by tile and grout contractors, among others; and, Commercial “CP” Series — Features a natural red rubber

service blade, backed by a firmer black rubber compound backing cushion more like a heavy duty conventional window squeegee. They are used in stores, factories, warehouses and in general janitorial window cleaning. The squeegees are re-usable because the blades are replaceable.
“We put our heads down, put our masked noses to the grindstone, kept working and remained open.” ~ Bruce Gale The company’s proprietary blended, long-lasting black rubber compound floor squeegee blade is resistant to petroleum, paint, chemicals and animal fats. It works well for smooth floors, such as cement or linoleum. These blades are used by service stations, car washes, auto dealers, factories, shops and stores, according to Dorden. “We also import moss squeegees from Belgium,” Gale said. “For our customers, we have plenty in stock. We offer standard and heavy-duty metal ‘moss’ squeegees from Belgium. We also offer white plastic frames and black ‘moss’ blades. In addition, we offer programs for co-manufacturers and wholesale distributors.” The rubber blade for Belgian squeegees is open cell and very soft and porous. American squeegee blades are of a harder durometer, as they are designed to move water and other fluids. The unique Belgian squeegees offer a softer durometer that is foam-like in consistency and almost dries the floor. “Color-coded Belgium squeegees are available upon request,” Gale said. “We can bring in a container load of them, and we will be happy to work with anybody who would like to place an order. For less than a container, we would be happy to include some in our next container for the customer’s convenience.” Last year, Dorden began offering a new floor squeegee with a 2 1/2-inch blade (standard size is 2 inches). “Sales for the squeegees with a 2 1/2-inch blade are doing very well,” Gale said. “It is a very high-quality part.” New this year is a line of extra heavy-duty steel handles. “The handles are not like coated steel handles that have a very thin steel tube,” Gale said. “These handles are very thick with a cast zinc and steel threaded end. The thicker guage of steel adds to the quality and durability of the handles.” Initially, the extra heavy-duty steel handles were manufactured for one company.
“Now, rather than having the handles as a proprietary item for a particular company, we are going to be offering the product line to the entire industry,” Gale said.
Another of Dorden’s newer products is a steel trap socket with a threaded handle option at the customer’s request. Standard squeegees have a tapered socket, which is normally used. With a traditional tapered handle, the wood swells and contracts, and is a very stable and effective way to keep a squeegee in place. The company also offers an extra heavy-duty cast zinc socket for many of its floor squeegees. One challenge in 2021 has been shortages of some raw materials. PG 14
“With shortages come higher prices. Steel, aluminum and rubber are costing more,” Gale said. “After we use what we have on hand, and we move into the newer raw material, we are going to have to raise prices. We keep all price increases to an absolute minimum. We want to offer our customers the best price for maximum value.” As companies now have a year of dealing with COVID under their belts, there have been lessons learned. “Having people work from home has been very well accepted, whereas everybody used to have to come into the office or the manufacturing plant,” Gale said. “We have allowed some employees to work outside the facility.” Communicating during the pandemic has also changed, as one-on-one contact with customers has been eliminated or severely limited. “Communicating virtually using such platforms as Zoom has become second nature and very prevalent,” Gale said. “As things start to ease, there will be more in-person contacts.” Gale expressed optimism about the future of Dorden Squeegees and the industry as a whole. “I’m really optimistic. We think we offer a better mousetrap,” Gale said. Contact: Dorden Squeegees, 7446 Central Ave., Detroit, MI 48210. Phone: 313-834-7910. Website: www.dordensqueegee.com.
ilwaukee Dustless Brush, a brand of Gordon Brush Mfg. Co., Inc., of City of Industry, CA, offers quality lines of cleaning tools, including floor squeegees with bolt-in handle sockets, many styles of steel-backed floor brushes, upright brooms and more. As a separate company, Milwaukee Dustless Brush’s original “dustless” brush was first manufactured in 1897. In 2005, the company was acquired by Gordon Brush, and is now one of several brands under the Gordon Brush umbrella in the City of Industry facility, which also includes StaticFaction, Easy Reach, Redtree, JEK, Marx Brush, Footmate System, JB Ward, Kirschner Brush and SpecKenneth Rakusin trum Paint Applicators. “The Milwaukee Dustless brand has always developed the best products in the industry, whether it is a floor broom or squeegee,” Milwaukee Dustless Brush/Gordon Brush President/CEO Kenneth Rakusin said. “The brand’s excellent squeegees are made with blades that range from the softer moss rubber to the stiffer neoprene solid rubber. “The squeegees are designed with the Milwaukee Dustless socket, which is a three-eighth-inch nut and bolt connection that will last forever versus a tapered handle stuck into a squeegee that sometimes needs to be nailed to keep it from coming out.

Furthermore, water causes the wood to expand and contract. It is really not a very durable connection. “Our handles are either all wood, a combination of wood and steel, or all steel. For example, when using a 36-inch squeegee with an all-steel handle and our nut and bolt connection versus a taper handle, all the user’s effort goes into pushing water around, as opposed to a squeegee that wobbles. “Again, from the beginning, Milwaukee Dustless created products that were exceptionally heavy-duty, long-lasting and, especially with squeegees, designed to replace wear elements while retaining the main housing.” When COVID first hit last spring, protocols were put in place at the Gordon Brush facility to help keep employees safe and healthy, including social distancing, the wearing of masks, enhanced cleaning, etc. Although there are signs the pandemic is winding down, the company has not eased up on the safety and health measures that are in place.
Shipping costs to bring some raw materials from overseas and the cost of the raw materials themselves are a challenge.
~ Kenneth Rakusin “We haven’t changed any of the protocols, yet,” Rakusin said. “California is planning to follow CDC guidelines until June 15. So, we are still following the rules, which include the use of PPE equipment, social distancing, etc. We are still cleaning very thoroughly and requiring people to wear masks. In about a month, we should be able to go back to what I call ‘normal.’
“Recently, we hosted a vaccine clinic at our facility. We not only had it open for our team members and their friends and family, but also for all our business neighbors. We have gone out of our way to try and make it better for people.”
To motivate employees to get vaccinated sooner rather than later, the company is offering a $100 payment, Rakusin said. While many companies were shutting down or cutting back during the beginning of the pandemic, Gordon Brush doubled down and increased production. “Back then, we continued to produce, and now the economy is somewhat robust for us,” Rakusin said. Even though production is ongoing, labor and raw material shortages have made it difficult to keep products in stock. “Even as we strive to build inventory, there are so many items that are out of stock. We can’t make them fast enough,” Rakusin said. “We can’t get certain raw materials. Also, right now, in May 2021, we are constrained because we can’t hire enough people that we need to produce the way we want.” Rakusin said it doesn’t help that the migrant labor pool, due to immigration issues and the pandemic, has been depleted. “We use a U.S. government system called E-Verify. As part of the hiring process, we have to verify the U.S. government allows us to hire a person. We must determine if a prospect has a green card or is a citizen, or has whatever documentation he/she needs to legally work in America. “In California, we have an additional labor issue now that marijuana has become legal. Since we manufacture items for the federal government, we must certify that we have a drug-free environment. While the pool of talent in California can legally use marijuana, we can’t hire people who do, because we have to certify we are drug free.

“Since November (2020), we have acquired, or have on order, five new machines that will allow us to manufacture more quickly.”
~ Kenneth Rakusin However, even if marijuana was legal on the federal level, we don’t want somebody using it while driving a fork lift or working a machine.” One of the ways some companies mitigate the lack of workers is to expand their automation capabilities. “Since November (2020), we have acquired, or have on order, five new machines that will allow us to manufacture more quickly,” Rakusin said. “We have one machine that cycles twice as fast as the one it replaced. There are two that are 50 percent faster than the the older versions. New machines that are on the way in the summer will also increase capacity and, more importantly, will also increase our speed, which is very important to us. We continually invest in our machinery.” Shipping costs to bring some raw materials from overseas and the cost of the raw materials themselves are a challenge. “We are having big issues with shipping,” Rakusin said. “Some raw materials come from overseas and the cost of shipping has doubled. In addition, getting the containers is very difficult. We have had major delays in bringing in raw materials.
PG 18
“Moreover, steel and aluminum prices have increased, as have most raw materials. We are in an inflationary cycle right now and we are dealing with it to the best of our ability. We don’t like it when our order backlog grows. We like it when we can supply customers the way they expect us to, which is within a couple of weeks. Now, it is a challenge trying to make that happen.” Several months ago, when Rakusin went for a walk in Beverly Hills, CA, where he lives, many retail, restaurants and other businesses were closed or had gone out of business. As people have been diligent to follow safety and health protocols and are now being vaccinated, the situation has changed. “What looked so scary several months ago, has done a total reversal,” Rakusin said. “Now, when I walk up and down the streets in Beverly Hills, the stores are back. The bleak perception I had six or seven months ago is totally reversed. “A number of new restaurants and stores are opening. California now leads the country in fewest number of new COVID cases and deaths. “Restaurants that made it through the most miserable part of last year are now full. Sometimes it is hard to get a reservation because they are so crowded. There is a lot of pent-up desire that people want to get out and enjoy a meal.” Contact: Gordon Brush Mfg. YARN COMPANY EXECUTIVES DISCUSS
By Harrell Kerkhoff | Broom, Brush & Mop Editor
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many away-from-home facilities to shut down over the past 12 to 14 months, causing a dramatic decrease in foot traffic. With less foot traffic comes less usage of mops and mop yarn. The good is, as more people become vaccinated and more facilities reopen, the demand for mop yarn is increasing. Broom, Brush & Mop Magazine recently spoke with executives from two companies that produce yarns for manufacturers in the cleaning industry. They told how sales at their respective companies have fared since the pandemic hit, and how business is today. The executives also shared measures their respective companies have put in place to keep employees safe and healthy, while also successfully working with customers via modern technology. PG 20

of product, which means we must successfully turn orders around in a very short time.” The majority of raw materials that Lemieux Spinning uses, for the mop industry, involve synthetic rayon and polyester. The company also uses a lesser amount of cotton material, such as blending rayon and polyester with either cotton waste or virgin cotton to produce certain products. According to Serge Lemieux, there were not many issues involving supply or pricing of either rayon and polyester during the bulk of the pandemic, although now there are challenges. “Right now, there is extra pressure being placed on polyester, which may be a result, in part, to the recent announcement by DAK Americas that it plans to close its polyester staple fiber manufacturing operations near Charleston, SC,” Lemieux. “The price of rayon, meanwhile, remains stable, but could be influenced by recent increases in freight costs. The same issue involves many products coming from overseas, such as from China, South Korea and India. “The timing of increased freight costs is bad, but it’s something we can’t control. It is putting a lot of pressure on overall endproduct costs.”
On a weekly basis, a special flyer was prepared and sent to each employee, informing him/her on COVID-19 updates and all necessary information pertaining to Lemieux Spinning, making sure everyone was on the same page. ~Serge Lemieux “The main problem with wearing masks in the production area is employees get very hot. Our employees, however, have persevered and done a good job keeping them on. We have also had our employees fill out a questionnaire before every shift, asking about their health, how they are feeling and if they have come into recent contact with anyone who is COVID-19 positive,” Lemieux said. “So far, we have been lucky, with no virus outbreak in the plant. In December, we did have some people in the office with the virus, which meant we had to send other employees home as a precaution. Everybody is now OK. “We kept most of our employees in place even though our business was up and down. No employees were laid off. That was our goal during the pandemic. There was a time we did shut down production one day each week, which was necessary to compensate for slower demand. Fortunately, business is looking much better. There is going to be an end to this (the pandemic), and we are getting there.” Founded in 1906, Lemieux Spinning manufactures yarns for institutional and commercial cleaning supplies, such as wet and dust mops. The company also offers yarns for top-of-the-line tufted, braided and woven carpets, as well as yarns used in the filtration industry. Serge Lemieux reported that overall business at the company has been down approximatively 15 percent, compared to the year prior to the pandemic. “Certain months have been better than others. There are places that use our products that have reopened, while other locations are still shut down. A lot of cleaning supplies, traditionally sold by our customers to end-users, have been in less demand, except for disinfectants and hand sanitizers,” Lemieux said. “Business is currently more active with our U.S. customers. Customer activity, meanwhile, in Canada and other parts of the world is also getting better. Customers are starting to rebuild their inventories.” As in-person visits came to a halt for many company representatives during the pandemic, one hurdle has been finding the best ways to keep in contact with customers. Officials at Lemieux Spinning have relied on various forms of technology. “I still believe a phone call is the best way to communicate. You have to keep talking with customers,” Lemieux said. “It’s tough to not be able to meet with customers at their locations. “I still believe a phone call is the best way to communicate. You have to keep talking with customers.” ~Serge Lemieux One rare advantage to the pandemic is that it has given more people, including company leaders, added “time to think.” Officials at Lemieux Spinning have taken full advantage of this added time to help move the company forward.
“The pandemic has given us time to think about our overall business. One thing we did was focus on a key word: ‘improvement.’ That key word is being applied to all aspects of our
company. For employees, it includes improving quality of life, training and the machinery many of them operate,” Lemieux said. “The same is true for our products. How can we improve what we make, while keeping prices low? When it comes to customers, how can we improve delivery times, while also planning for their future needs? “We are focusing on every aspect of improvement, involving our employees, customers and the consumers who use our products.” Contact: Lemieux Spinning, 125 Route 108 C.P. 2039, St. Ephrem, QC, Canada G0M 1R0. Boucherie products include tufting machines for brooms, household and personal care brushes, as well as toothbrushes. Household brush production lines: The brand new Aeola concept of household brush machinery combines the advantages of Ovale technology with the simplicity and reduced footprint of a single filling tool. The very high speed and elimination of the index time gives this machine a very high output. The Ovale is a
BBM MAGAZINE | May/June 2021
2021 | SUPPLIERS DIRECTORY high-output carrousel machine with two drills and two filling tools for the production of a wide variety of household brushes. The unique feature of this machine is that the carousel moves from drilling to filling without a stop of the filling tools, which boosts the production. Full 5-axis control of the brush holders, on-board trimming and a very universal handle feeder make this a highly-automated yet flexible machine. The DMU machine is a small flexible drilling and filling machine with a very short change-over time. Different tool strokes are available to cover as many applications as possible. Hairbrush and tufted personal care brushes can also be manufactured. Toothbrush Production Lines and Work Centers: Boucherie has developed a variety of toothbrush manufacturing equipment. These range from the stand-alone Hepta tufting machine, through the Hepta-FM, which has an integrated finishing machine and a universal handle feeder, all the way up to the double-header Hepta-2-FM machine. All of these machines are now available with the new Hepta filling tool that runs at up to 1200 tufts per minute, and are completely reengineered for ease of maintenance and

affordability. For mass production of high quality toothbrushes, Boucherie has the very compact Hepta-2-FM double header, but also offers the double-headed or tripleheaded TB32-Flexi and TB33-Flexi cells. These can produce up to 80 brushes per minute when the filling tools run in parallel, or for complex brushes with two different hole sizes when the filling tools run sequentially. Because this type of machine is modular in its construction, flexibility is built into the concept of the machine. Anchorless Toothbrush Production Lines and Work Centers: In the field of machinery for the oral care industry, Boucherie established a leadership position in anchorless technology with the introduction of the AFT/CNC machine more than 20 years ago. With the new PTt machine, however, Boucherie is making a giant step in flexibility of brush designs and bringing anchorless toothbrush production to more toothbrush makers. The PTt machine works with normal toothbrush handles with pre-cored holes, and requires no brush head plate. This
makes for more compact brush heads, with a more comfortable brushing feeling because less plastic is holding the tufts. Block tufts, strip tufts and various combinations of tuft angles widen the range of design options for the toothbrush heads. The machine is very suitable for the processing of tapered filaments, and rubber elements can be integrated in the brush head, such as massaging fingers or tongue cleaners. The machine works with pre-cut filament pucks, and end-rounding of the bristle tips happens in-line in the fiberbox, without the need for intermediate stocking or cumbersome transfers of raw materials. IDM Machine: The IDM is a compact carousel machine for the high-speed production of inter-dental and mascara brushes. It is now possible to produce up to 95 high-quality brushes per minute, even while using the smallest wire sizes, since the brush remains in the same clamp throughout the whole production process. The IDM is available in versions with spool feed of the nylon, or with fiber boxes for pre-cut filaments. An integrated vision system for the automatic inspection of finished brushes is also available.

2021 | SUPPLIERS DIRECTORY The automatic brush handle assembly machine HMU is new: This compact machine will assemble up to 90 brush handles per minute onto interdental brushes, using a unique and patented ultrasonic embedding technique, resulting in a fast process that will give extremely high extraction forces. Injection Molds: Boucherie produces single-component molds, multi-component molds with manual or automatic transfer, and multi-component, high cavitation, valve gated, hot runner stack molds. Boucherie molds are used to produce a wide range of consumer, medical and engineering products. Packaging Machines: Cooperating with ILLIG Maschinenbau GmbH, of Heilbronn, Germany, Boucherie now has available a high-performance packaging line for carton blisters in the range, allowing brushes to be placed in an ecologically friendly and attractive package. Furthermore, form, fill and seal blister packaging machines for traditional blisters are available, in heat seal and high frequency seal versions, for toothbrushes and personal care brushes. HEPTA-FM And HEPTA-FM/1200 Productivity, Efficiency And Quality Built In Belgium
HEPTA-FM 1200 is a compact high-output toothbrush production cell.
Modern toothbrushes have become high-tech oral care instruments with sophisticated tuft layouts. These contemporary toothbrush designs require high-tech machinery to manufacture them efficiently. Automation, reduced floorspace and high output are all important in the continuous quest to improve hygiene, boost quality and reduce cost. The HEPTA-FM machine is a high-speed filling toothbrush manufacturing cell, seamlessly centralizing all parts of the manufacturing process in one machine: high speed tufting, highprecision trimming and smooth end-rounding. The machine can be equipped with an automatic handle feeder with positive transfer of the handles, from the moment they leave the handle container to the moment they are placed in the turret clamps. With up to 1,200 tufts per minute, and handling devices that will transfer up to 35 brushes per minute, the HEPTA-FM is the fastest in its class. Plenty of trimming stations keep the options open for the trimming profile, flat or profiled, with or without fibre spreading systems. The longitudinal end-rounding gives a consistently smooth and

glossy end-rounded surface finishing along the length of the brush head, usually with less endrounding units required than the traditional type. The HEPTA filling tool is a completely new design, different from any other filling tool type, and it is extremely simple, with a minimum of parts and adjustment. It requires no lubrication, maintenance is minimized and setup is quick and easy. This HEPTA filling tool really shines when it comes to processing tapered filaments at high speed. All movements of the machine are controlled by servomotors. The trimming- and endrounding units all have their own drive motors, so the product quality can be tuned to perfection. A highly efficient cleaning unit removes any dust, and an electronic marking press puts your brand on the handle. With universal clamping units and clamping fingers used throughout, and servomotor controls on all the handling devices, this machine is extremely quick to change-over.
HEPTA-FM can be equipped with a drill head to manufacture wooden toothbrushes, and processes tapered filament very well.
Special options for particular products are available, such as: rotary turret clamps for brush designs that require a variable anchor insertion angle, or an integrated drill unit to manufacture wooden toothbrushes. The user interface is based on graphics of the machine, and also has messages in the mother tongue of the user, in order to make the user interface very organic and clear, so the machine is very easy to work with. For quick and in-depth support by our specialists, every machine can be connected to the internet. The whole machine is engineered and manufactured in the Boucherie plant in Belgium, with service both from the people who built the machine as well as from different Boucherie service points all over the world. The HEPTA-FM is a giant step forward in toothbrush manufacturing technology, with plenty of options for both brush models as well as automation. Find out more by contacting info@boucherie.be.
