Dear BB&N Community:
It is always a highlight of my year to share this annual report with our community. It gives us a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and the institution we hold so dear. Moreover, it o ers the opportunity to reflect on a remarkable year at BB&N—one in which your generous support enabled us to deliver significant breakthroughs spanning the key objectives of our strategic plan: wellness, innovation, inclusion, and an exceptional student experience.
I want to take a moment to spotlight a few areas of particular interest.
Overall, we raised over $14.5 million this fiscal year. This high-water mark shows the appreciation our donors have for our school and a belief in our goals for the future.
We opened a fourth campus here at BB&N—our Grove Street Athletic Campus—in large part thanks to a recordsetting $4.87 million gift from the parents of the Class of 2022. This ambitious public/private partnership with the City of Watertown is a game changer for BB&N in so many ways.
Members of the community came together for a successful sixth annual Day of Giving, when they “supported what they love about BB&N.”
We incorporated a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion focus into many of our professional development grants and programs, and made a board-level commitment to this work by establishing a standing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Global Studies Committee.
Our first set of Innovation Grants was awarded this spring. These grants ranged from installing a pollinator garden behind the Upper School to developing a plan for Bivouac’s Camp Marienfeld property for future use.
We awarded a record-setting $9.74 million in financial aid grants toward tuition and additional expenses for 24% of enrolled students.
I’m so grateful for this amazing BB&N Community. What is most exciting to me is that we are just getting started!
Best,
Jennifer Price Head of School

BB&N Community “Supports What They Love” on the
Sixth Annual Day of Giving
April 14, 2022, marked BB&N’s sixth Day of Giving, an annual tradition that brings the entire community together to make a collective impact for our students, faculty, and this incredible school.
The theme of this year’s drive, Support What You Love, focused on the many aspects of the school that are supported by The BB&N Fund. All members of the community—parents, alumni/ae, grandparents, faculty, and sta —were invited to support what they love about the school, from arts, academics, and athletics, to faculty, financial aid, and equity and inclusion programs.
Students were also brought in on the action and asked to share their favorite BB&N programs, places, and people like those shared here. The BB&N Fund helps to make these experiences possible.
Thanks to the tremendous generosity of the BB&N community, we surpassed our goal of 350 gifts, ultimately receiving 397 gifts and raising more than $250,000 in support for The BB&N Fund, which will have an immediate and significant impact on the school.
“It never ceases to amaze me the power and generosity of this community and what we can accomplish together.”
— Head of School Dr. Jennifer Price
BB&N’s fifth annual Day of Giving raised more than $250,000 from 397 donors who “supported what they love” about BB&N.

Parents of the Class of 2022 Raise a Record-setting $4.87 Million
The Senior Parents’ Gift program is a longstanding BB&N tradition in which senior parents celebrate their children’s BB&N experiences and express appreciation to the faculty and sta by making a meaningful gift to the school.
The parents of the Class of 2022 stepped forward with their financial support of BB&N’s philanthropic priorities in an inspiring and record-setting way. We are thrilled to report that this year’s senior parents raised nearly $4.87 million between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, far surpassing their $3 million goal.
Because of the outstanding generosity of this year’s senior parents, one of the new athletic fields at the Grove Street Athletic Campus will be named for the Class of 2022.
We are grateful to the parents of the Class of 2022 listed on page 28 for their incredible support, as well as to the 24 Senior Parents’ Gift volunteers who dedicated their time on behalf of the campaign.

COMMITMENT TO FINANCIAL
AID STRENGTHENS THE ENTIRE BB&N COMMUNITY
Every year, thanks to the generosity of many members of the community, BB&N is able to support a robust and flexible financial aid budget that allows us to meet 100% of the demonstrated financial need for both new and returning families. In addition, it allows the school to create processes and procedures that help all families access the full BB&N experience in an equitable manner.
Examples of this include providing funding for:
Purchase of laptops so all students can participate in the laptop program on equal footing
Learning support and test preparation
Transportation (e.g., access to BB&N buses and MBTA passes)
Essential auxiliary programs, clubs, and activities (e.g., after-school care, travel programs, summer camp)
These endeavors are iterative and grow with the evolution of our school and its programs. Working with stakeholders across the community, our goal is to create a framework of policies to support families through the whole BB&N experience.
Mendoza Perez Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Fund Advances DEI Priorities
When Jake Anderson-Bialis ’98 and his wife Deborah were considering a gift to BB&N last year to support the school’s strategic priorities, their decision about a designation for their gift was an easy one. They simply asked the Mendoza Perez family, with whom they had been connected for more than a decade.
At the recommendation of Luis Mendoza Perez ’19, Adrian Mendoza Perez ’22, and their mother Adria Perez, the Anderson-Bialises decided to establish the Mendoza Perez Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Fund, to honor Adria’s many personal sacrifices and commitment to her sons’ education and to support BB&N’s DEI initiatives in several key areas.
Jake’s connection with the Mendoza Perez family dates back more than ten years when he was completing his degree at Harvard Business School and was serving as Luis’s Big Brother. As he was preparing to move to California, Jake wanted to continue to support Luis and his family, and suggested that Adria consider enrolling him at BB&N. Thanks to generous financial aid and support during the admissions process, Luis was able to join the BB&N community as a fourth grader, and his brother Adrian followed him several years later as a sixth grader.
Both Luis and Adrian credit BB&N’s caring faculty, financial aid o ce, Jake, and especially their mother for the financial, emotional, and intellectual support they received throughout their years as students. Evidence of their own academic accomplishments is clear as Luis is now beginning his junior year at Yale University studying computer science after taking a gap year, and Adrian is matriculating at Stanford University.
To make these opportunities available to other students and families of color, the Mendoza Perez Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Fund will be used to advance a variety of DEI objectives for BB&N students, faculty, and sta — including recruitment of and support for BIPOC faculty— and creating and fostering a community of support among BIPOC parents.
As Jake recently commented, his involvement with the Mendoza Perez family over the years led him to re-engage with BB&N including joining the Board of Trustees. Hearing the boys’ perspectives about the school as one of only a few students of color and taking classes with few faculty of color, particularly at the Lower School, educated him about the experiences of underrepresented students of di erent races and heritages. Through the fund he and his wife established and the school’s commitment to DEI initiatives, Jake is confident that important progress is being made.

New Archives Program Fund Honors B&N 1943 Classmates and Lifelong Friends
Browne & Nichols classmates Bob Whitman ’43 and Bob Ganz ’43 have been close friends since pre-school in the 1920s. Their remarkable journey has included military service during World War II, Harvard University Ph.D.’s (both in English), and distinguished university careers. Additionally, Bob Whitman met his wife, Professor Marina Whitman, through Bob Ganz. Now, the Whitman and Ganz names are connected in perpetuity at BB&N because this spring, the Whitman Family Foundation established and endowed the
Robert Ganz ’43 Archives Program Fund
.
The fund will support the annual expenses of the BB&N Archives, which will soon have a new home in the renovated administration building at 197 Coolidge Hill. It also honors Bob Ganz’s decades of volunteer service, including voluminous class notes chronicling the school’s history and people.
Discussing the new fund, Bob Whitman notes “how many people seem to know about Bob and [his] reporting the feelings of alumni/ae about the school [which is] remarkable.” At reunion weekend in May, BB&N awarded Bob Ganz the 2022 BB&N Medal in recognition of his lifetime achievements and service.
“Bob Ganz’s contributions have been of immeasurable value to the Archives over the years, and this fund will allow us to preserve and share the rich history of our school’s community for generations to come. I’m deeply appreciative to the Whitman family for their generosity.”

SUPPORTING AND CELEBRATING INNOVATION AMONG FACULTY AND
STUDENTS
At BB&N, innovation is the creative process of generating and implementing ideas that disrupt, evolve, transform, and/or enhance current teaching and learning practices, resulting in better outcomes for all members of the diverse BB&N community and beyond.
This past spring, in a new initiative to encourage and support innovation, BB&N’s Teaching and Learning Office (TLO) awarded eight inaugural Innovation Grants (I-Grants), selected from an application pool of 14 adult and student proposals.
Applications for a second round of I-Grants are being reviewed and selected this fall, and will provide financial support for BB&N community members seeking to pursue an innovative idea and “color outside the lines.”
The following Innovation Grants developed by faculty and staff were funded in the first round last spring:
Bivouac & Beyond: To develop an intentional vision for a “fourth campus” on BB&N’s Harrisville, NH property (Camp Marienfeld) in order to advance the best experiential education initiatives for all grade levels.
Maker Break: Two sessions of a free week-long program were launched over 2022 Spring Break for Middle School students at the KnightLab (the Middle School makerspace), which served as a pilot for a semester-long design and fabrication course being implemented at the Middle School this year.
Ethics Course and Student-Led Conference: To create a new elective course that examines morals, ethics, and moral decision making with a student-driven, projectbased component involving partnership with one or more local not-for-profit organizations. The course will challenge students to create and lead a conference focused on how the study of ethical frameworks helps us understand and address pressing and salient contemporary issues. Students will share their learning with others in the BB&N community and beyond.
Woodworking and 3-D Design: To transform a space within the Upper School woodshop—accessible to all art classes and faculty and coordinated with the Middle School KnightLab—into an area where students can learn about creative problem solving, work iteratively and collaboratively, and move between digital space and the physical world.
Pollinator Gardens: Reimaging Lawns at BB&N: To involve students in all aspects of planning and design to transform two areas between the Upper School building and woodshop into an intentionally sustainable landscape
consisting of native grasses and pollinator-friendly perennials plants.
Upper School Service Learning Program: From Hours to Competencies: To change the Upper School service learning program, beginning with 2022-2023 incoming ninth graders, from a quantitative 40-hour requirement into a competency-based program. The goal is to foster student leadership and agency, support thoughtful partnerships, and shift from a transactional and superficial model of community service to a more collaborative and substantive approach to service learning.
Recently funded grants developed by students include:
Exploring the Outdoors: Aquisition of high quality hiking/camping equipment for an overnight hike in the White Mountains of NH in early June for Upper School students, specifically those who might not otherwise have access to the gear necessary to undertake such an activity. Over the longer term, the equipment will be available for students to borrow managed by the Outdoor Recreation Club.
Students as Social Entrepreneurs: To build on the successful student tutoring program—Boston COVID Tutoring, designed by Upper School students during the pandemic—by developing an incubator program for other students interested in creating and implementing a service or business that addresses a social need.
Highlights of some of the first round of grants are shared below:
Exploring the Outdoors
Students: Jeremy Altman ’22 and Arden Conine ’22
Noting that BB&N offered no other major outdoor recreation opportunities for students other than Bivouac for ninth graders, Altman and Conine applied for an Innovation Grant to support the newly established Outdoor Recreation Club’s first trip. The grant supplied the club with money to buy new tents, backpacks, and other backpacking necessities to use for the first trip and many more to come.
The goal of the trip was to get students who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to go backpacking to do it with a fun group of peers. The trip in June 2022 was a huge success, with the group hiking along Franconia Ridge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire led by English teacher Zoe Balaconis, rock climbing coach John Duval, Altman, and Conine. Thanks to this I-Grant, ORC leaders will have a strong gear library to continue to bring outdoor recreation to BB&N students.

Pollinator Gardens
Faculty: Zoe Balaconis, Upper School English; Alda Farlow, Upper School English; Mara Vatz, Upper School Math
Students: Howard Brown ’22 and Eli Waisburd ’22
We proposed disrupting the traditional lawn aesthetic at BB&N by replacing sections of turf on the Upper School campus with native grasses and pollinator plants. We aim to reduce our environmental impact, increase biodiversity, and transform our campus from one that requires frequent and costly maintenance into an intentionally sustainable landscape. With proper signage and opportunities for hands-on classwork, we aim to inspire our students and the surrounding community to consider how cumulative individual actions (such as maintaining lawns) can contribute to large-scale environmental degradation, and how cultivating native plants helps to restore a healthy ecosystem.
To start, we proposed converting two sections of the campus into a garden with native turf-alternatives and pollinator-friendly perennials that would support biodiversity, improve soil health, reduce flooding, and provide visual interest. The first area is an existing (though neglected) raised garden bed behind the original Upper School building adjacent to the back driveway/trash storage area. Our work on this garden was completed over the summer.
Woodworking and 3-D Design
Faculty: Anna Van Voorhis, Upper School Woodworking
With the generous help of the Teaching and Learning Office through one of their spring Innovation Grants, a small maker space is taking root in the front of the Woodworking Studio. This summer the space was framed out with new walls to separate it from the sawdust generated by the rest of the shop. The space now hosts a Glowforge Laser Cutter, a Flashforge Adventurer 4 FDM 3D Printer, a benchtop SainSmart Genmitsu CNC Engraver, and a Cricut Maker. The space will be open and accessible to interested faculty and students, in addition to students enrolled in woodworking and 3D design classes. The space also aims to create curricular continuity for students graduating from the BB&N Middle School (and its KnightLab) and joining the BB&N Upper School community.
Bivouac
and
Beyond Faculty: David Strodel, Upper School Science
First steps for the Bivouac and Beyond innovation grant have included internal and external assessments of the Marienfeld property in Harrisville, NH, the site used almost exclusively for Bivouac at this point. A more concerted effort to refurbish and tend to upgrades of our present facility and property has begun based on internal assessments by BB&N. In addition, money from the innovation grant has gone to engaging an outside planning and architectural group, LDa of Cambridge, MA, who completed a site plan of the property to enable BB&N to continue to creatively envision possibilities for future programming and use of the property.

THE ALMY SOCIETY
Each year, thoughtful individuals and families invest in the school’s future through their estate plans. There is a unique story behind every one of these legacies, but they all have the same ultimate goal: to maintain the strength, integrity, and value of the BB&N experience for future generations of students.
If you have arranged to support BB&N through your charitable estate plans like the generous alumni/ae, parents, and friends recognized here, please contact Roger Fussa at 617-800-2722 or rfussa@bbns.org so we can welcome you as a member of The Almy Society. To read more about BB&N’s Planned and Deferred Giving program, visit giftplanning.bbns.org.
The Almy Society gratefully recognizes the following alumni/ae, parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends who have included BB&N in their long-term philanthropic plans.

RENEWAL OF FACULTY TRAVEL PROGRAM EXPANDS FACULTY HORIZONS
After a two-year hiatus due to COVID travel restrictions, BB&N was delighted to be able to award travel grants again this summer to nine faculty across all three campuses who have worked at the school for seven or more years. These trips provide faculty with personal and professional enrichment along with opportunities to explore new parts of the country or the world, either solo or with significant others. They often lead to the development of new courses, enhancements to existing courses, or new connections and resources to bring back into the classroom.
We are deeply grateful to the Barrocas Family Fund for Faculty and Staff Travel and Exchange that was used to provide funding for the grants awarded to the faculty during summer 2022.
Several faculty shared highlights of their recent travel experiences:
“The BB&N travel grant allowed me to attend The Paideia Institute’s Living Latin In Rome Program. During the two weeks, I was able to study the Roman lyric poet, Catullus. Lectures, class discussions, and site visits were conducted in Latin; it was my first experience talking so much Latin for such extended periods of time! In Rome, we toured famous archeological sites and visited important museums. Often, we translated Latin literature pertinent to the site we were visiting or the object we were viewing. During a weekend trip to Verona, we visited the Biblioteca Capitolare which houses some of the oldest manuscripts of Catullus.
“For decades, BB&N’s Latin program has offered students tours to the Mediterranean and in June, we are going to Sicily! Inspired by my experiences this past summer, I’m excited to adapt many of the methodologies and insights that I found so enriching for the benefit of my students during our own travels. In the classroom, I will be better able to introduce my own students to the oral Latin method. This method often increases students’ working vocabulary and helps them read and translate Latin authors more intuitively. With my Latin 5 students, I cannot wait to share all the things I learned with them as we study Catullus.”
— Walter Young, Upper School Latin
“My faculty travel grant trip, in part, supported my development of a new English 12 course that centers on two powerful 20th-century novels: Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon and William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury Both depict sprawling families—one Black, one white—that are inextricably entwined with the legacy of slavery.
“Given the pervasive racial injustices persisting in American society today, I wanted to learn more about the history of slavery, its insidious shadow, and the ongoing fight to free all of us from its deleterious e ects. This trip to the Deep South, my first, and return visits to DC and Virginia, will profoundly inform my teaching of not only the new course but also my approach to texts in other classes. Professionally and personally significant, the experience has deeply sharpened my awareness and increased my understanding of racial issues, past and present.”
— Sharon Krauss, Upper School English

CURRENT PARENTS
BB&N is extraordinarily grateful for the generous financial support provided by current families, 71% of whom made gifts and other commitments totaling more than $8.8 million this year to The BB&N Fund and to the school’s capital and endowment priorities.
Listed below by grade are all parents who made gifts or pledges to either The BB&N Fund or to a capital/endowment initiative between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.
Those parents with a following their name are members of BB&N’s Knights’ Circle which recognizes those who have made gifts to BB&N for five or more consecutive years. We are truly grateful for their consistent and loyal support which helps BB&N sustain the academic excellence for which the school is known.

KNIGHT CORPS MEMBERS
CONTINUE TO MAKE AN IMPACT
One of the innovations introduced at BB&N two years ago was the Knight Corps, a group of young professionals who provided crucial support across all campuses during the pandemic. The program was such a success that it was retained last year as a “COVID-keeper” and is expected to continue going forward.
Most Knight Corps members are recent college graduates who are interested in exploring a career in education. In 2021-2022, 12 Knight Corps members supported faculty, sta , and students in the classroom, theater, admissions and technology o ces, the Teaching and Learning O ce, and on the playing fields.
Because of the impact they have made in all areas of school life, BB&N has hired ten Knight Corps members (now referred to as Education Fellows) for the current school year. The school has increased their positions from 28 to 40 hours per week, added benefits, and provided opportunities for interested Knight Corps members to live and support students at Lesley University through a new partnership between BB&N and Lesley.
“I especially enjoyed my time as a Knight Corps member once
I started working at the Upper School, since my goal was to become a high school teacher. I was placed in the admissions and technology o ces and eventually was moved to the art department to help substitute for some classes. I felt like I was able to participate in a lot of di erent opportunities, and that it was a huge steppingstone for my personal future.”
— Isaac Vu, Knight Corps member 2020-2022
Left: Knight Katy Meehan on the soccer field; right: Knights Anna Curtis, Molly Harrington, Maggie Hersam, Isaac Vu, Amanda Lewis, Emma O’Loughlin (Knight Corps Program Coordinator), and Thanydi Sandoval
“All of the people here, from fellow Knights and sta to faculty and students, have been so kind, helpful, and welcoming. One of my responsibilities was to become an expert in Canvas and guide teachers as they transition to the new learning management system. I’m excited to work one-on-one with teachers to make sure that transition is as smooth as possible.”
— Hillel Ehrenreich, Knight Corps member 2021-2022

SUMMER CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND INSTITUTES ENHANCE
CLASSES AND PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS ON ALL CAMPUSES
Faculty and staff were busy this summer working collaboratively with their colleagues across campuses and departments, or on their own projects, to enhance their curriculum and develop new programs and initiatives to benefit their students and the broader BB&N community.
Using Dr. Liza Talusan’s book The Identity-Conscious Educator as an anchor text for their summer curriculum development work, all grant recipients incorporated an identity conscious approach to their work and to their plans to bring that lens into their classrooms.
We are grateful to the donors whose faculty professional development funds and gifts provide important support for this work.
Summaries of a few of this summer’s projects are shared below.
Upper School Biology Club
Terry Cox, Upper School Science
To supplement the full integration and deployment of an unleveled biology model into the core Upper School science curriculum, the department thought it would be central to both BB&N’s mission and vision as a school to allow additional pathways to access and excel within the sciences at BB&N and beyond.
The central focus of a new Upper School Biology Club would put science technology, innovation, and hands-on exploration/learning at the forefront of our new enriching science offerings and that would be accessible at all grade levels. Coupled with an early exploration into science through observation and interaction with nature, the club would allow students to jump right into question generation as they continue their journeys as scientists throughout ninth grade.
Upper School Art Department Revisions

wanted to examine our o erings through the lens of DEIG work, and to look at what the experience of a ninth grader in the art program currently looks and feels like.
From that, we were able to take a deep dive into what we’re doing and how we do it, looking at how to increase equity, diversity, and inclusion in all our o erings and keeping each o ering centered on the student experience. This has led to us proposing a major alteration to how we structure opportunities and requirements within our programs.
From there, we examined ways that we can open up the art experience for students, and how we can increase the visibility of the art department within the larger culture of BB&N while amplifying student voices.
Lower School Newspaper Growth and Development Christina Dello Russo, 4th Grade Homeroom
This past year a group of sixth graders started a Lower School newspaper, The Buckingham Times, which has proved very popular, and the sixth graders hoped it would continue after they leave the Lower School.
As the faculty advisor, my summer curriculum development grant allowed me to create a basic structure for the newspaper, including identification of and becoming comfortable with a formatting tool; and develop bylaws, specific expectations, and a clear process for joining the paper using guidelines developed by this year’s sixth graders. Such guidelines and procedures will also ensure the continuity of the paper as another faculty member could assume my role as advisor.
The newspaper is very much written and run by the students, and elevates the student experience by allowing our sixth graders to have a voice on issues, both global and school-based. It also creates a strong community bond and creates a connection between campuses as the sixth grade writers continue to be inspired by the Upper School newspaper, The Vanguard. The Buckingham Times has already proved to have a positive impact on the Lower School, and there is strong interest in continuing to develop and grow the paper.

Racial Justice Community Time B-12
Emma Arky Solomon, Lower School DEIG Practitioner
Tiffany Rice, Middle School DEIG Practitioner
Maria Graciela Alcid, Upper School DEIG Practitioner
We were looking to align content, scope, and sequence for Racial Justice Community Time through all three divisions: taking the Lower School programming to make it developmentally appropriate at the Middle School, and beginning to consider what it could look like at the Upper School level as well.
We sought to develop and define age-appropriate understandings of race and racism, as well as what positive identity development outcomes would be. We used the Social Justice Standards from Learning for Justice to identify positive identity development goals, and worked together to develop definitions of race and racism for each developmental level.
We each took a different approach based on the needs of each of our campuses, and worked to connect this program to BB&N’s mission, strategic plan, and to the DEIG commitments to make the throughlines of our work more visible.
Design + Fabrication Course
Greta Farrell, Middle School Academic Technology Specialist
I used my Summer Curriculum Grant to develop a new technology elective for 8th graders that will emphasize design thinking and the engineering design process in order to complete projects that make use of multiple fabrication machines and tools. Disciplines include 2D and 3D design, woodworking, physical computing (electronics and programming), and textiles. Students will combine their knowledge across machines and disciplines, develop skills in giving and receiving feedback to improve their work, take risks, and embrace failure as a learning opportunity.
B-12 Service Learning and Community Engagement Institute
Candie Sanderson, Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist
My Summer Institute on B-12 Service Learning and Community Engagement gathered faculty and staff from all three campuses, as well as students and a family representative, to review, rethink, and redesign our B-12 Community Engagement framework.
Our focus was to consider our student service learning programs across the school, with a focus on shifting toward a partnership approach centering dignity and learning in community, in alignment with our overall DEIG mission and vision. In addition to reviewing what is currently happening on each campus and during the Senior Spring Project, we started drafting plans for the upcoming year that would move us closer to our new model and overall goal of principled engagement.
We also talked about fostering student social entrepreneurship projects, in partnership with the Boston COVID tutoring team. Spring Salvin P’24, ’27 also shared her work with the family community, and we started to envision what creating a culture of service would look like across our BB&N adult community (faculty, staff, and families).
Earlier this fall, 63 faculty members participated in the second annual Summer Curriculum Share—an opportunity to disseminate their work and learning across campuses and disciplines. Several of their reflections and observations are shared below.
“It’s beautiful and inspiring to see how the work happening on each campus will have a trickle effect on the entire community as our students matriculate through their time at BB&N and/or other institutions, and also that we are growing a community of global citizens.”
“We are working on equity from many angles but the primary focus is on the student experience and student input. Equity and inclusion are what we do—not an add-on or afterthought—which is super inspiring and energizing.”
“
As educators, we’re very conscious of teaching students to be independent, critical thinkers who use the skills they learn and practice in new landscapes—including the curricular material at hand and the world around them.”
“
As a community of educators, we are working on alignment, equity, as well as keeping and starting new traditions.”
“We are focusing more on who is in our classroom, and how what they bring into the classroom impacts how and what we need to teach them.”

REFLECTIONS FROM FACULTY CHAIRHOLDERS
Three years ago, I was honored to receive the Marian Vaillant Future Leader Instructorship. After my first year in the position, I reflected on my growth as a teacher, learner, and a leader and about why it meant so much to me to be honored by the BB&N community. I had no idea at that time that the next two school years would be the most challenging years of my life, further affirming what I already knew about this incredible place we call BB&N.
“The pandemic offered an opportunity for me to further hone my leadership skills and to observe and benefit from the leadership of others. Most importantly, I got to see the best of our community during this difficult time as all of us rallied together to do something special.
“Thank you so much for your donations and for your commitment to BB&N. I look forward to seeing which of my colleagues will be next to receive this tremendous honor. I’m fortunate to work alongside so many qualified candidates.”
— Ben Goldhaber, Kindergarten Teacher
Marian Vaillant Future Leader Instructor 2019 – 2022
“As I wrap up my tenure as the holder of the Paideia Master Teacher Chair, I continue to be grateful for this recognition of the work that I do. Middle schoolers can be challenging, and they can also be amazing—and they can be so all within the span of a single class period! Because of where our students are developmentally, as teachers we have the ability to make an impact which can be significant and potentially lifealtering. This is not a responsibility that I take lightly.
“Being a teacher at BB&N for 22 years, I am aware of my privilege as an educator at such an esteemed institution as well as my responsibility to my students, many of whom will be future leaders of our country and our world.”
— Rachel Jamison, Middle School English
Paideia Master Teacher Chair 2017 - 2022

$135,500
More than $135,000 was received from 384 BB&N families for the Parents’ Association Holiday
Faculty and Staff Appreciation Fund representing greater participation than last year. Their generosity enabled the school to provide a holiday gift of $400 to every fulltime faculty and staff member.

ENHANCING OUR CAMPUS FACILITIES, TECHNOLOGY, AND ENVIRONMENT
During the summer of 2022, a number of projects were completed or initiated that enhance the student experience, upgrade technology, and ensure that our buildings and grounds are properly maintained. Thanks to philanthropic support, many of these projects have been funded through the capital portion of BB&N’s operating budget as well as special fundraising initiatives.
197 Coolidge Hill Renovation: The former Pechet family home at 197 Coolidge Hill Road is being renovated to accommodate the Admissions department and serve as an arrival point for visiting prospective Upper School families, as well as providing o ces for some members of the Senior Leadership Team and the school’s Archives. A new parking lot and path at the rear of 197 Coolidge Hill will serve as a connector to provide a handicap-accessible route between buildings.
Nicholas Athletic Center Heating and Cooling Unit
Construction Projects
Grove Street Athletic Campus: Construction continued on BB&N’s new Grove Street Athletic Campus in Watertown. The campus includes two new athletic fields for BB&N football, soccer, lacrosse, and softball practices and games, viewing stands, and 71 parking spaces. Adjacent to Watertown’s Filippello Park, the new Grove Street Athletic Campus also provides BB&N with access to two additional fields in Filippello Park, so that all Middle and Upper School teams can practice during after-school hours at either the Grove Street or Gerry’s Landing campuses.
Replacement: Replacement of the Nicholas Athletic Center’s rooftop HVAC mechanical equipment will provide better climate control within the gym and o ces, and lower the overall utility operating costs at the athletic center.
DCR Edge Project: BB&N continued its partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation to beautify and strengthen the campus edge along Gerry’s Landing Road.

IT Projects and Initiatives
Over the summer, the IT Department oversaw several projects focused on improving security, communications, and student experience, including:
Learning Management System (LMS) Upgrade: Due to a change in PowerSchool’s current LMS o ering earlier this year, all faculty content was moved from the PowerSchool LMS to Canvas LMS.
IP Speakers at the Upper School: An assessment of paging and communication systems across all three campuses found that improved coverage was needed at the Upper School. All wall phones were removed and IP speakers were installed throughout the Upper School to provide full coverage for paging and communication.
Projector Updates: Based on an audit of projectors schoolwide and our anticipated refresh cycles, selected projector units across the three campuses and administrative o ces were replaced and updated.
