Their chance encounter in 1973—Bev’s question, Mr. Curtis’ follow-up, and his subsequent decisionto hire Bev for the Specialist role—would forever change the school.

Mr. Curtis, the Director atthe time, told Bev that the place she looked at was not only a school, but that it was looking for a Science Specialist. “Can you teach science?” hewondered.

After several minutes of conversation, she asked: “Is this a school?”

Not only did Bev teach science; she went on to teach math, lead the BB&N/Lesley Joint Master’s Degree Program, and serve as Assistant Director of the Lower School for 7 years before being named Director in But1986.the pinnacle role was not, for Bev, the end. She had witnessed her impact on teachers-in-training during her tenure steering the BB&N/Lesley Program, so she decided to leave one role as Director for another: leading the BB&N Teacher Training Institute. She held the position from June30,1994, through today, and it’s difficult—if not impossible—to quantify the effectshe has had on the world of Youeducation.canimagine my shock when, as a writer who can veer into wordiness, I sat down to compose this tribute and found myself, in trying to describe Bev’s contributions to and impacton my life and so many others’, utterly bereft of myprogram,interestinImadecurrent,inoneattendedAsthen,livescompassion,andplants,room,becauseimbuedroom,”intotheBevofisBeverlyMalone—“Bev,”asmanyknowher—words.notjustaBB&N“lifer,”but,ineverysensethephrase,alife-changer.israrely,ifever,absentfromschool—inflesh,aswellasinspirit.Indeed,venturethetheBridgmanHouse’s“seminarandyouwillfindherpresenceisineverynookandcranny—perhapsitusedtobeherfamily’slivingbutquitelikelybecausethebooks,stickynoteswith“Bevmaxims,”classroommaterialsconveythecare,andconvictionwithwhichsheandteaches.Evenwhensheisn’tthere,sheis.exceptionalasBB&Nisonitsown,ItheTeacherTrainingInstituteforreason:BeverlyMalone.AndIknow,speakingwithotherinternspastandthatIambutoneofmanywhoasimilardecision.Abriefaside,ifmay:IwasouttodinnerinBrooklineearly2020,andwhenIexpressedaninenrollinginateachertrainingIwascutoffbeforeIcouldgiverationale.

ATrueBB&N Treasure

As Elizabeth Azano ’95 wrote, “Bev embodies the commitment, caring, energy and love that lead us to value the BB&N Lower School so much.” Yet Bev’s legacy at BB&N is more than 49 years of service, and it will live on through the hundreds of teachers she has trained. Bev’s ways constitute their own educational philosophy, alongside those of Piaget and Montessori, and her approach to teaching is every bit as transformational.

Photobelow:Malonelovedconnectingwithstudents.Photoabove:MalonewithJayMyers’03circa1990.

My dinnercompanion, through a mouthful of carnitas, stated flatly: “Two words for you: Beverly Malone.”

I supposelegends are confirmed over plates oftacos. That evening, I arrived home, plopped down at my desk, found Bev’s email address, and composed a nervous but excited note to her expressing my interest in the Teacher Training Institute. She responded within a day offering to schedule a meeting and connect me with other program interns. We emailed back-and-forth for several months: discussing our favorite American history books, hikes in the White Mountains, and the plants we each noticed as they leafed and bloomed that spring.

I’d heardof Bev before during my work at theGraduate School ofEducation: “Oh? You’re interested in teaching? You might want to see if Bev Malone is still at BB&N,” a colleague suggesteda few months prior to that Brookline outing. “The only reason I would tell you to enroll in a program here would be if BevMalone were leading it; so I’m going to say—don’t do it, and look instead at BB&N’s program.”

19 DEPARTINGFACULTY

Do I even need to go on? That exchange typified the relationship that I would form with Bev—and the connections that I learned she had so carefully and caringly established with thousands of others, teachers and students alike. Bev sets herself apart through the very real—that is, delightfully and uncommonly human—self she brings to her every encounter, conversation, project. On the brightest days and on the hardest, Bev is always there for me; for you; for us. That quintessential Bev approach—giving yourself to others, sincerely and unconditionally—is the epitome of excellent teaching, and nobody does it more truly than Bev Bev:herself.you are a mentor, friend, colleague, teacher, and leader—like no other, in fact. I’ve enjoyed imagining over the past year that one of the Bs in BB&N stands for “Beverly.” Your impact on this institution is profound—immeasurable, inarticulable. I am but one of many whose lives you have changed. But you are one, irreplaceable: the life-changing Bev Malone. Thank you for everything you have given to all of us—at BB&N, and far beyond.

As a child, Peggy and her family never lived in the same home for more than five years. School was the constant in Payne’s early years, and she enjoyed school life at every level. She majored in Mathematics and Secondary Ed. at the University of Bridgeport and stayed in Connecticut, teaching math for three years at Wolcott High School. Payne finds it amusing that she was also the school’s cheerleading coach. She had no experience with that, but she laughingly

“Ms. 20%80%Payne:LOVESASS.”

Nastaran Hakimi ’07 said that Ms. Payne’s “support, care, and ‘tough love’ were hallmarks of the wayshe cared for me and many other students, and it was exactly what I needed.”

Payne knew that the foundation one builds in a first-year algebra course sets a student up for success for the rest of high school and beyond.

will miss her students and colleagues when she retires. She loved working ina department where students come first. Christine Oulton, a colleague for 22 years and Payne’s department headfor eight, says Peggy Payne has “given me so much help and advice—from small things such asa good thought-provoking question to put on anassessment, to how to manage an extra lively class orbest engage with a student who might be overwhelmed.”

Payne wore many hats duringher tenure, including faculty advisor to the Student Council, Bivouac Guide, and Tenth Grade Dean, but teaching and advising were always centralto her school mission. Payne quicklyearned the reputation as a funny and energetic teacher who would do anything and everything for her students. In a Faculty Profile in the Vanguard, students wrote: “Ms. Payne: 80% LOVE 20% SASS.” Payne was a straight-shooter who saw herself as a partner in her students’success. She usedhumor to make hermath class a fun experience. Anyone who walked by her second-floor classroom likely saw smiles and heard laughter. They probably also heard Payne’s high-pitched and energetic voice long after traveling past her room.

Derek Papagianopoulos ’10 said that Payne was“one of my favorite teachers at BB&N. Her ability to hold her students to an extremely high standard while also providing a caring hand is something I appreciatedand still remember. She was always willing to share a laugh but also to snap the class intoshape when needed!” And Taylor Richard ’14 recalls,“I remember the days of sitting in Ms. Payne’s office, trying to pull as much life advice out of her as I could. Our Principles of Precal class definitelygave her a run forher money, as itwas quite a rowdy bunch, but nonetheless we all learned so much from her ontop of laughing harder in that classthan any Payneother.”

Fundamental to her success was building a connection with each student.

In addition, she strove to create a safe space where students felt free making mistakes, and could learn from them. She did this long before “growth mindset” became a popular trend in education. “Humans make mistakes,” Payne says. “Without a willingness to make mistakes, we would never learn to walk!” Extra help was also a Payne trademark. Any time shewas not in class, she was usually working with a student in her office. “It’s what we do as math teachers,” Payne matter-of-factly says. Payne is that rare math teacher who was as excited about the challenge of teaching Algebra I as she was about teaching AP Calculus.

And personally, 1993-94 was my first year as Math Department Head, and Peggy Payne wasthe first teacher I hired. No doubt that was one of the most impactful and best decisions of my BB&N career. Current Mathematics Department HeadChip Rollinson sums it up: “Not only has Peggy been aphenomenal teacherfor so many years, she has beenan outstanding advisor, mentor, andcommunity member.I have always appreciated her directness and honesty.I’ll miss her steady, thoughtful, and caring presence.I know I am not alone.” Rollinsonis not alone. Payne leaves a hole in this community, but we are thankfulfor 28 years of care from this one-of-a-kind teacher.

boasts atbeing quite skilled at assessing the quality of the cheerleaders’ triangular formations. When budgetary negotiations delayed new contracts, Payne didnot wait around. Knowing nothing about independent schools, she interviewed at Green’s Farm Academy, and was drawn to what she saw. She accepted a job offer, andtaught there foreight years before moving on to Bryn Mawr School, an independent, all-girls secondary school in Baltimore. There, Payne observed how much more assertive girls were in a math class without boys. She became committedto giving all girls a voice in her math classes. Her final move came when she sought a change to a coed school, and a move closer to her aging parents. She landedat BB&N, where shewould enrich the lives of hundreds of students over the next 28 years.

The student co-presidents and I met regularly with Geoff and Rory Morton to discuss proposals voted forward by the Student Council. Geoff is an amazing listener; he makes great eye contact and doesn’t interrupt for clarification. He then gathers his thoughts and describes the domino effect of what the students proposed. He’s a master at getting kids to see that there are more people to consult and consider without making them feel that they messed up. Instead, they feel respected, empowered, and energized by their new insights. Geoff wants them to learn and grow from these conversations. He might be the director, but he is always an educator. As Accelerated Algebra 1 teaching partners, Geoff and I frequently discussed how to reach hesitant students or help them fill in long-standing comprehension gaps. Later, they’d tell me he was their favorite math teacher. Why? With the individual attention he gave to each and every one, Geoff made them feel heard and special.

A representative selection of voices joining Morton in bidding farewell to Geoff provides a pastiche of his contributions and his impact on the Upper School community. A colleague once told me, “Geoff Theobald is someone who makes you want to work at BB&N,” and I couldn’t agree more. Geoff is a thoughtful and caring person who exemplifies the three tenets of BB&N’s motto—Honor, Scholarship, Kindness—especially kindness. He has always been very supportive of me as a faculty member and then department head; I know so many others have felt the same way. I have gone to Geoff quite a bit for advice and have always walked away feeling much more confident about how to tackle whichever of the many issues we troubleshot over the years. I am incredibly grateful for Geoff’s wisdom and guidance throughout the last 12 years and will certainly miss leaning on him in the future.

Geoff took a chance on me by giving me the opportunity to return to my high school alma mater, a place that has played a critical role in my personal and professional growth. His mentorship and support helped me to realize

SCIENCETEACHERANDSTUDENTCOUNCILADVISOR–PEGGYPAYNE,USMATHEMATICSANDCOMPUTER

DEPARTINGFACULTY 23 that not only was a career in education possible, it was also something I could fall in love with, challenging as it is. Many times throughout these first five years of my teaching, I needed support, and Geoff’s door was always open. He has a gift for unspiraling new teachers from the grips of existentialism and inspiring us to step back into the classroom with a renewed confidence that we can support and educate our students. I’ve learned that the love and care of a leader changes a place. Geoff changed BB&N for the better, and I will forever be grateful for all he did for our school and for me and my family.

Geoff supported faculty members in finding a healthy work / life balance. When I began working at BB&N nine years ago, my two kids were little, and Geoff helped me to coordinate my teaching commitments with their preschool schedule. Once both kids were in elementary school, affording me a longer work day, he happily helped me move into more challenging roles within the school. After I became department head four years ago, we always joked about coming up with plans 1 through 60 to meet every challenge, which taught me to be prepared and flexible. Geoff mentored me in this new position and helped me grow as a leader. I am grateful for his support and for providing me with a model of a caring, engaged parent who was able to balance his commitments to the school and to his family.

As so many have experienced, Geoff believes in others’ strengths, abilities, and potential for growth. In his “Ted Lasso”-like way, he puts his team first. I have witnessed this time and time again: in discussing a struggling student, he is the first to ask what motivates and engages the student; when an idea takes hold, he will immediately give credit to a colleague, even when he may have been the driving force; and since my very first meeting with Geoff, he has been the consummate cheerleader in supporting my work and my growth. We will dearly miss his humble leadership style and his eagerness to “believe” in all of us.

The Instagram account’s name is “The Shadows Project,” but its posts are anything but dark. Colorful and funky, they depict everything from Crimean Sea beach-goers to Ukrainian pop stars to black-andwhite portraits of Tchaikovsky spread across scrapbook-style collages that appear cut from glossy magazines.

The students’ posts, which vary from gushy love for all things Ukraine to deeply-researched vignettes about forgotten artists, writers, and performers from the nation’s history, fly directly in the face of Russian propaganda bent on erasing

AsUkraine’sveryidentity.such,Shadows—whose actual address is @shadows.project—has been embraced by everyone from Vox Media to the heads of official Ukrainian state museums to warravaged citizens on the front lines as an uplifting reminder of the nation’s Inindependence.theirownsmall way, Cat and Andrei, who spent the first half of their lives growing up in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, before moving to America, have become part of the

Russia has always said there’s no such thing as Ukraine,” Cat said. “It’s a territory of Russia. It doesn’t have its own culture. It doesn’t have its own country. Even though we celebrated our 30th year of independence [from Soviet rule] last year, we understood that these historical myths being perpetuated from the Kremlin had not gone away, and the longer that they [were] allowed to continue, the more it creates the basis for a territorial “Weattack.actually sat down when we were founding Shadows,” in January 2021, she added, “and said, ‘We need to strengthen our historical memory in order to ensure the future of Andrei,Ukraine.’”who will attend the Pratt Institute’s School of Design this fall, became Shadows’ first graphic designer, helping to shape the feed’s contemporary and interactive style. He’s created lively graphical storyboards (called Instagram “carousels”) on topics such as why chimney bricks throughout Kyiv are yellow instead of red. But he’s also put together far less whimsical Thisposts.spring, as Russian troops advanced from several directions, Andrei put together a graphic to help Instagram followers in Ukraine differentiate the markings of friendly tanks from those of foes— not only for their safety, but also to help Ukraine’s army track Russian troop movements.

“It was the first one I had to do for the war. It was a like a switch for me—I knew that this was really important,” Andrei said. “I was like, ‘People are going to see this and are going to use this information.’”

THE WAR IN UKRAINE by Peter DeMarco

ResistanceFightersBB&N’sown

PUSHINGBACK Cat was barely a teenager when Russia attacked and annexed Ukrainian-held Crimea in 2014, but the message that sent stuck with her. As a freshman at Stanford University in 2020 she published an essay calling for people to stop using the word Kiev, Russia’s name for Ukraine’s capital, and instead use the Ukrainian spelling of Kyiv. Shadows, named after a rebellious 1960’s movie in which Ukrainian was spoken even though it was verboten under Soviet control, was born out of that same idea of pushing Russia back by embracing “Historicallynationalism.

SENIOR SPRING PROJECT

The account is an eye-catching ode to Ukrainian culture and history, what one might expect a bunch of Generation Z college and high-school students of Ukrainian heritage to have come up with—Catarina “Cat” Buchatskiy ’19, and her brother Andrei Buchatskiy ’22 among them. But since Feb. 24, the day Russian invaded Ukraine, Shadows has taken on a far more serious meaning.

“It’sUkrainianResistance.aninterestingstory,” Cat said, “because we founded Shadows over a year before the war started. We had kind of an insane foresight.”

hiding in a bomb shelter. (Their relatives were all safe at the time of this writing.)

In April Stanford’s Hoover Institution, where Cat had interned, came through with $25,000 in funds to buy bomb-proof cabinets and packing materials to secure some of those artworks, and power generators for museums to keep the lights on. Cat,who’d already flown to Poland to help relief efforts, soon found herself on a supply truck headed for the TheirUkrainianborder.destinationwas the city of Lviv, one of her favorite places, which just days earlier had been “Webombed.were waiting in the line of cars [and] right past the border you can see a big sign that just says, ‘Ukraine,’” Cat recalled. “As we kept driving closer and closer…I was just getting very quiet and very emotional. The truck driver I was with turned to me and in Ukraine he was like, ‘Are you coming home?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I am.’ And I just start crying.”

The siblings vividly recall the night Russia began its attack, upending their lives. How Cat called home from Stanford in a panic; how Andrei felt like it couldn’t have been real;how their father, Igor, who is from Ukraine, kept cooking dinner as a coping mechanism; how their mother, Eveline, whois Brazilian, started crying for their old home in Kyiv. Just nine months earlier the whole family had been in Odesa, vacationing all summer on the seaside with relatives there.

40

As much as the war and their work on Shadows has brought Cat and Andrei together, they’ve nevertheless taken very different journeys this year. Cat, who is 21, was able to take a leave of absence from college and completely throw herself into the cause. She’s spoken about Shadows at international conferences, started an online fund (www.saveua.art) to assist struggling Ukrainian museums, and helped lay groundwork for an online encyclopedia of Ukrainian artworks held across the country in case some are destroyed.

Back in Cambridge, the last half of Andrei’s senior year, which he expected to be “worry-free,” was instead filled with constant war updates and nonstop CNN watching at home. 1 2

“We’re all very focused [on the war, so] that when you’re on a call, you usually don’t find yourself reflecting on your innermost feelings,” Cat explained a few weeks before the graduation. “I text him like once a week. ‘You alive?’ And he’s like ‘Yeah.’ And I’m like, ‘Love you.’ And that’s it.”

HOPE At his graduation this June Andrei wore a traditional, billowy Ukrainian garment called a vyshyvanka for the ceremony. So did Cat, who flew home to be with him that day.

Despite months of texting, calling, and Zooming, they said it was the first time they really had a chance to catch up.

There have been at least three constants for Andrei and Cat since the war began. They remain close siblings, able to joke with each other during a joint interview, or assess each other’s well-being with just a few words. Their hope for Ukraine remains completely unshaken. Despite all they have done and continue to do with Shadows and other volunteer efforts, they wish they could do even more. “You can be doing everything you possibly can,” Cat said. “But at the end of the day we go to bed thinking, ‘There’s still a war going on.’ And that’s hard.”
