The BB&N Story: The Process of Becoming
At a parent meeting earlier this year, Upper School Director Geoff Theobald described the Upper School’s general philosophy of teaching and learning as “the process of becoming.” During the time that students spend on the Upper School campus—from their formative two-week experience at Bivouac as ninth graders until they take the stage at Graduation—BB&N students are continually in the process of becoming: discovering new passions, talents, and capacities as learners; taking on new challenges, leadership roles, and responsibilities; and building the foundation of who they will become in the world beyond BB&N. For many students, this process begins as they step foot for the first time on the Lower or Middle School campus, as Beginners or older students—joined by parents and grandparents who become part of the BB&N story along with their children or grandchildren. For our more than 6,000 alumni/ae—spanning diverse backgrounds, generations, and life experiences —each of their BB&N stories is as unique as they are, whether their roots go back to Buckingham, Browne & Nichols, or BB&N. Our faculty and staff have their own unique BB&N journeys that may span a few years or many decades. And for some, their stories actually began during their own time as BB&N students, before returning to share their love of learning with a younger generation.
“As reflected in these and thousands of other stories and voices, BB&N is continually in the process of becoming.”
In this year’s Report of Giving we are delighted to share just a few of these stories—of students, faculty, alumni/ae, and parents. We also celebrate the remarkable story of Head of School Rebecca T. Upham, whose 17-year journey will come to a close in June 2018. As reflected in these and thousands of other stories and voices, BB&N is continually in the process of becoming. We are eternally grateful to the countless members of our community whose generosity of time, resources, and talents has helped shape these stories and journeys. Thank you! MY BB&N STORY

Journeys Full of Promise and Joy “Somewhere along the way in my years of teaching at BB&N I realized something very important about myself. It was that I had chosen to be an early childhood teacher in order to be close to the sheer energy, curiosity, and honesty of childhood. “It was an exhilaration that I felt in no other setting, and I let myself thoroughly enjoy your childhood with you. So thank you for the pure joy of it. I continued to teach the very youngest children for many years after you moved on and to this day, I still feel that somehow the children always gave more to me than I did to them.
“This is something that I want you to always remember. Do not lose touch with your inner child as you continue into adulthood. That spirit and joy and excitement of learning new things with wonder and awe is such a precious quality! May your journeys all be full of promise and full of joy!” — Shera Selzer, Former Lower School Director Remarks to Class of 2017 Lifers, May 2017
Confident for the Journey Ahead “When I was in Beginners we had Sixth Grade Buddies and I remember thinking—wow, they’re really tall! They must be mature and they must be smart. I’m excited to finally be the tall ones, the ‘sort of mature’ ones, and the ‘must be smart’ ones. But I wouldn’t have gotten here without our amazing teachers. Thank you all for your hard work.

“On the first day of Beginners, walking into the School, I was nervous yet confident. Today I feel the same way about Middle School—both nervous and confident for the journey ahead.” — Alisa Ishii ’23 Remarks at Sixth Grade Lunch, June 2017
My BB&N Story: Message from the Head The start of every school year is marked by the return and reverberation of excited voices, young and old, across our campuses. This excitement heralds a great year ahead for our students and teachers. For sure, excellence at a school like BB&N is determined by a broad variety of factors; some of the more functional ones include financial resources, physical plant, or even something as mundane as the vast spaghetti of unseen cables that keep our campuses technologically connected. Nevertheless, I am sure we would all agree that the truest measure of BB&N’s greatness is more intangible: namely, our people and the relationships we establish with each other every minute of every year together. It certainly holds true for me and my own “BB&N story.” When I reflect on my 17-year journey here, the theme that resonates most deeply is the power of the people you meet along the way. Every single day I’ve spent at BB&N, I’ve had ample occasion to remind myself how privileged I am to be in a place where I can observe adults guiding young people in the process of becoming. Becoming joyful learners. Becoming critical thinkers. Becoming principled citizens in our communities and our world. When you see these individual encounters between teacher and student—and then consider the thousands of them that occur every day—you understand how the fundamental act of supporting young people in their respective journeys reverberates and builds in strength and impact. In much the same way, the contributions of our many donors and volunteers ripple powerfully throughout our community and our mission. In aggregate, they start to open some magical doors for our students and for our faculty. Thank you, my fellow BB&N community members, for the incredible care you have shown this School and the individuals who study and work here. You have positively influenced the “BB&N stories” of so many of our students and alumni/ae.You have also played a huge part in making my personal journey, my BB&N story, so joyful.

The power of individual teachers in our daily lives
“My relationships with teachers at BB&N haven’t just blown away my expectations—I can now say I have multiple teachers who have influenced my life for the better. “This year has been full of changes for me, one of which is the relationship I’ve formed with Mr. Lindberg, drama teacher and director of both the fall play and winter musical. I had never tried out for a play in my high school career before, so when I received the lead in the fall production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, I was terrified. “I had trouble memorizing lines and understanding many of my scenes. But Mr. Lindberg was my savior. He took time out of every rehearsal to connect the scenes we were performing to themes or conversations we encounter in our everyday high school lives in order to make Shakespeare easier to understand, and he scheduled individual meetings with almost every member of the cast to help us memorize and perfect our lines. Mr. Lindberg’s attention to detail and his ability to connect what seemed like another language into freshman year level English, without losing any of the complex themes and storylines present in Shakespeare’s writing, allowed me to overcome an extreme challenge in my life and even learn quite a bit while doing it.” — Avi Madsen ’18
Financial Aid Enriches the Entire Community “My daughter Kate, second of my three children to have benefitted from BB&N’s financial aid, spoke at an end-of-the-year Diversity Dinner. ‘When I was asked on a college application if I was excited at the prospect of joining a community rich in socio-economic and racial diversity, I initially responded not especially. As a Lifer at BB&N, enriching diversity was all I had known.’ “For me, as a parent and faculty member, that was a testament to the richness provided by the

A Welcoming and Supportive Parent Community “As a parent you can never be certain of anything when it comes to your children, but we are certain about one thing: their time spent at BB&N was not only good for them, but good for us as well. We are certain that not only did they receive an excellent education, but they were able to make friendships that will last over time, and to compete against some of the best athletes in New England. They were immediately welcomed into the community by their peers, and we are convinced that their peer group contributed to healthy competition that pushed them academically. As a result they not only decided to go to better colleges, but selected more challenging majors. BB&N catapulted them to a level of education that they would have never thought of previously. “Our experience as parents was different, but just as wonderful. We were surrounded by parents who were welcoming and supportive of every child in the BB&N community. The parents provided a support network that was unlike anything we have ever

My Thoughts as I Leave BB&N “I have been associated with BB&N since before the schools merged and it has been central to my entire life. I went to Buckingham in elementary school and returned in 6th grade, and stayed until I graduated in 1961. My teachers were a huge support to me, and I do not know how I would have managed without them, in particular without Mrs. Stowe. The School was also very important because that is where I met my husband Jack, who went to Browne & Nichols. We started dating in high school when we were in a French play together. We were married right after graduating from college. Then many years later both of our children (Alex ’89 and Wrenn ’91) went to Buckingham Browne & Nichols. “I started teaching at BB&N in 1979. I was hired part-time and then took on various jobs in the School until I retired in 2017. These various jobs were opportunities to learn new skills, and they helped me stay energized about teaching. Also over the years, because of generous professional development funds, I was able to learn Latin, Spanish, and to travel and study in other countries, for which I am very grateful. I have especially enjoyed being part of such an interesting community. I have met many wonderful parents who give generously of themselves. I will miss that. But most of all I will miss my colleagues. I do not fully understand why, when the teachers and leaders of the Middle School have totally changed, the Middle School continually works so well. It is a wonderful mystery. “BB&N has enriched my life both personally and professionally. I am very lucky and very appreciative of all that I have gained by being part of this School as a student, a parent, and a teacher. — Margaret Sandoz Hardy ’61, P’89,’91 Faculty Emerita

A Wonderful Ride, Thanks to Genuine Students and Caring Faculty
“I am amazed by how us home-grown BB&Ners have turned out. For the most part, we are smart, friendly, compassionate, and encompassing of exactly what BB&N is all about: honor, scholarship, and kindness. “Each of our BB&N experiences were individually crafted, constructed of intangible, impossible-todescribe feelings and interactions that come from all of us friends, peers, classmates. They are made from moments of laughter, sadness, excitement, curiosity, frustration, love. “As we head out to this world, and get released from BB&N’s sweet sweet embrace, I want us all to think a little bit extra about all these people that have made our BB&N experience the wonderful ride it was. Think about all those times you turned to your friends in time of stress or fatigue. Those times when your friends filled the Commons with laughter, spoke their minds in class, or flashed a smile in the hall. BB&N has not been all rainbows and sunshine, but it is brightened every minute of every day because of the genuine students and caring faculty that sit around you. “The point is not that BB&N makes every second of everything perfect, or every student extra honorable or kind, but the people here make hard things easier, stress less stressful, and fun more fun.” — Lucia Winton ’17, Remarks to classmates at Lifer Party, May 2017
Honor, Scholarship, Kindness... What This School Represents “Honor, scholarship, kindness…It is more than a motto. It is what this School represents. Every day I see my classmates trying to live by that motto in different ways. At the core of BB&N are the students, but BB&N wouldn’t be a school without our teachers, who have taught us so much. They push us to strive and use the resources and guidance they provide to grow as learners, and some day to prosper when we are set free into the world. But we also connect as a peer group: our teachers have taught us to learn from each other.”

Reflections from a Buckingham Alumna “At Buckingham in 1956 we were expected to excel. Buckingham was the best preparatory school for ‘young ladies’ in the country. It had the reputation for producing more serious graduates. I was not serious but the name, ‘Buckingham School,’ opened many doors to me thereafter. “My Buckingham education will always be remembered as the most challenging time of my life. I never worked harder than I did at Buckingham. Education after that was relatively easy. The skills, stamina, patience, and endurance all came from Buckingham. I am grateful. “I am proud to have been a part of a school that promoted strong women. It is perhaps the best thing I learned at Buckingham. At age 79, I can tell you that I am the happiest I’ve been in my
life. Of course it’s all subject to change and there will be more challenges, but Buckingham trained me to meet these head on. That preparation has served me well.” — Eleanor Littlefield Hunter ’56
“When I became a classroom teacher, I always knew that I wanted to return to BB&N because this is the place where I became a learner. It has sparked such joy working with these students, and working together [with my classmate] is great. Being able to share the experience

Physical Education Classes with Mr. Andre Still Resonate Years Later
“At BB&N, I was challenged by teachers who put in the effort to help me understand how to take in the writing of others and communicate my own writing in a clearer way. “I recently published a self-help book (Do a Day) that uses a case method approach to teaching a philosophy I developed starting at BB&N. Through sharing my own struggles, including losing weight, running a marathon, becoming a vegan, and more, I teach the philosophy and help the reader apply it to their own life. But I could never have done that without Mr. Andre and BB&N. “His approach was to take a collaborative, inductive reasoning-based approach so that I could learn for myself how to be healthy. This approach is mirrored in my own work. You don’t think of this sort of lesson coming from school, and certainly not from what most people think of when they think of a PE class. But if you think about what BB&N is, and how teaching is done there, it makes perfect sense. In those English classes I mentioned above, the teachers didn’t read books at us. They didn’t tell us exactly how to interpret what we read, nor what to say in the papers we’d write about those books. “Instead, they guided us on our journey to take in the message of the books, develop our own realizations about them, and foster our ability to interpret those messages in our own writing. Why should physical education be any different from the more traditional education you expect of school? Thanks to Mr. Andre and the environment in which he works at BB&N, they weren’t for me, and I owe so much to him and the School as a result.” — Bryan Falchuk ’97

Why I Wrote a Letter to Each of my Classmates “This class, this group of 127 seniors, is one of the most special groups of people I’ve ever met. We try all the time — through speeches, essays, and conversations — to show people outside of this class what it feels like to be a member of such an incredible group, but it just doesn’t work. “What inspired me to write a letter to the rest of my class was just that. The people around me throughout my seven years at BB&N have stunned me with their incredibly genuine kindness, respect for others, ability to have fun, and success in whatever they do. It was not an act of kindness on my part, simply observation. “The craziest part is that everyone had done something in the past seven years that I remembered because of how respectable or kind it was. Every single person in the Class of 2017 has done something spectacular, and I simply noticed it and thought it should be recognized somehow.
“Looking toward the future and my years in college and beyond, everything that I’ve learned from BB&N will be incredibly valuable… “No, maybe not learning about thermodynamics, but learning how to learn, learning how to make friends, learning why people do the things they do, or, most importantly, learning that there are good people in this world. Living in today’s world, the BB&N Class of 2017 is a refreshing sight. Ms. Upham said it best in her speech at graduation: if we keep being good people, and if we keep spreading this to where we go in the future, the world just might become a slightly better place.” — Bayard Eton ’17

2017 SENIOR CLASS GIFT
The Senior Class Gift is coordinated by the Senior Class Ambassador Committee and provides an opportunity for BB&N Seniors to work together to achieve a common goal in support of their School community. The Ambassadors reach out to classmates throughout the year to help educate the Class about what it means to be a BB&N alumnus/a and about the importance of The BB&N Fund. This year’s Senior Class achieved 100% participation in the Senior Class Gift and all funds were directed to The BB&N Fund to support Financial Aid. Charles T. Ablon Harold I. BB&N: A Cornerstone of our Educational Careers “Active people get stuff done. Actions drive community improvements, local and global alike. BB&N has done a spectacular job fostering the ‘active’ in us, but it takes more than a school to change the world. “It takes students who are excited about where they are and where they’re going. It takes students who recognize problems and understand the steps necessary to fix them. It takes a hunger for competition and progress and, above all, it takes appreciation for the people and places that got you here.
