508 West 20th Street skeleton, New York, United States
«If God is in the details, then few projects can be more devine than the High Line»*
The «High Line Park» is an urban park created in Manhattan in New York. Built on abandoned railway lines overhead Lower West Side, this natural suspension is the result of a joint venture between two local residents who began in 1999 and formed the association «Friends of the High Line» which will lead the project .
Bertille BORDJA - `June 2012
Skeleton of 508 W 20th Street is erected along the High Line. Floors, beams and columns visible, it did not end his pregnancy. Multiprogrammatique project, it was about giving life to the skeleton, give him a destination, and invest the plot in line with that on which it rests. The challenge was to respect the natural appearance of the building. My hope was to commit a tactful action not to denature the first glance I had looking at this naked building, almost carnal. Art gallery, library, cafeteria and guests apartment surrounded the premises. In a slow, on a parcel of 19th Street there are dressing rooms and workshop together overlooking the park. Then, along the sidewalk of 19th Street, sits a volume of through-housing with views over the city. Faced with the verticality New York just as fascinating intimidating, the High Line surprised by its horizontality. Therefore the project also invested «Under the High Line.» A relaxation, games, exhibition or just passing through, quietly linking the 20th and 19th.

Chelsea: not less than one hundred art galleries listed. Order to guide his desires on that form of art or artist, the project proposes a «Art Galleries House»: an interactive place where we would learn, find out current exhibitions in the neighborhood. At this level, «Under the High Line» is invested as an outdoor area exposure, associated with a basketball court. The Friends of the High Line has its offices at 529 20th Street. At 508, the project’s suite of association with a bookstore / library. In this place, you may refer all media relating to the High Line and neighborhood. This space is connected to the «Aquarium». Almost suspended in the structure of the High Line overlooking the «Under». Lacked space for a coffee break during a stroll in the park. The project has developed a coffee shop at the third level of 508, with the roof of the Aquarium that connects to the High Line. On the top floor, the project proposes a space reserved for guests of the association. This living space has been designed so that it remains the most flexible as possible to a different destination (reception, mini-conferences, exhibitions). Artists, who reside in the heart of island, have workshop place that looks at the park and is the relationship/link between their homes. The volume has been rotated 35 degrees to preserve the view of the skeleton and invite them to his discovery. Inside there is only one wall of which backs the flight of stairs which extends over the entire height of the building. This wall also serves to create a separation between wet and dry parts. This building is connected to the housing of 19th Street through the open volume of vertical circulation that creates a loophole and breathing in this mass that welcomes and duplex homes that matches the depth of adjacent volumetrics.
