VANKE SHANGHAI FENGXIAN CULTURE & BUSINESS CENTER 万科上海风险文化和商业中心
A Project and Program for Vanke in Shanghai’s Fengxian, a New Gateway, Proudly Steeped in It’s Own Unique History and Culture
Yan Yan (言偃) was a native of Wu. Fengxian means “worshipping the sage”, a name bestowed on this district by Yan Yan. After studying with Confucius he was named commander of Wuchang. While employed there, he transformed the character of people through teaching ritual propriety and music, receiving much praise by Confucius. When Confucious passed away, Ji Kang asked Yan how is could be that Confucious was not as widely known as Zichan (the Duke of Zheng), whose passing sparked a flurry of weaping for months, and lavish gifts sacrificed by his gravesite. Yan replied, “The influences of my Master might be compared to those of overflowing water and those of fattening rain. Wherever the water in its overflow reaches, men take knowledge of it, while the fattening rain falls unobserved.” The project was a melding of interests between client and government, commercial and cultural. The form, guided by the curved river, was an unique creature born from contrasting interests. As the design progressed through three rounds, the core concept held stready while the FAR continuosly increased for financial feasibilty. Eventually Vanke required more sellable area than Fengxian offered, but they both found a cultural jewel as inpiration for future projects.

KABUTO INTEGRATED RESORT AND CASINO
A ONE MILLION SQUARE METER 2000 KEY HOTEL MEGA RESORT IN TOKYO JAPAN
Our client was is exploring sites for construction of an integrated resort and casino in Tokyo. The focus was on the iconicism of the tower, the overall metaphor, and the spatial experience in the atrium. We aimed to make a strong impression on the visitor, while achieving an efficient hotel. Starting with 12 schemes, we then dropped to 4 and then finally to one. Kabuto was inspired by a certain samurai helmut. Italic, a view optimized tower, made subtle reference to Venetian history. Eclipse, an unusual star shaped atrium enveloped in the bottom half of an extruded enneper surface. Sandman, a twisted set of legs with optimized views and nice curves. Jewel featured a sky deck with helical ramps over a giant pool, propped by triple towers. Speed Peel boasted the worlds only spiral ramp hotel with the worlds longest manmade ski slope + water slide.

HEFEI WANDA DREAM CITY WATER PARK AND SHOPPING CENTER
Wanda invited Gensler to compete in a massing and facade competition for their new water park and mall in Hefei. Following their standard retail plan and limited to a 24 meter maximum height, we confronted many a design challenge. The shear length to height ratio made it difficult to create an non repetitive and dynamic building. Concept one, The Inkwell, took inspiration from Ming Dynasty water soluable ink landscape paintings. You can easily identify the form, facade, and features that equate to the elements of painting. The amphitheater represents the ink stone, the the skylight the ink stream, the roof cover is the scroll, and the facades are adorned with wood, water, and greenery. The client embraced this scheme, instructed us to set it aside, guaranteeing the chairman’s review in a later round. So we focused on other schemes. Several weeks later at our rendering company, we found a cheap copy of it from a local firm. We were later informed that we had lost the competition.
SINO WAVE WATER PARK
The obvious metaphor need not be unoriginal. The Sino Wave’s parametric facade, springy circulation court, and snaking skylight break into three clearly legible elements. Free of the need for glass along most facades, a tensile structure with EFT is viable. Our waves have dramatic depths and dynamics.
SHANGHAI RURAL COMMERCIAL BANK HAI AN HEADQUARTERS / 150 METER TOWER
In only twelve days, the bank needed to develop a scheme for their new headquarters in Hai An. Due to the urgency of government approval, we proposed two schemes acknowledging likely differences in each partie’s priorities. Gold Speckled River An Infinite loop atrium through podium and tower forms a pasive climate control strategy and social gathering space. The metaphor mixes classic Americana with golden Chinese balance and fortune.

海安 安全网 平安 safety strength speed
This design embraces three elements critical in banking. A safety net means trust. Strength means resiliance in a down turn. Speed means transactions happen smoothly. Many global bank headquarters harness strong outlines on angular forms. Due to a high FAR, a light foorprint was challenging, hence the heavy, masculine base.

NANJING GREEN LIGHTHOUSE ZERO CARBON Construction was completed in 2015. A high tech zone exhibition pavillion in Nanjing, this project translated parametric concept design into high performance reality. The building hosts state of the art technology to achieves a energy consumption below 25 KwH/m2/year and the remaining energy load is offset by photo voltaic panels. The window location, sizing, and orientation helped achieve a 200 LUX natural daylight level for all permanent working areas. Collaborators included Cowi for energy consulting, TADI for MEP/Structure, and Crystal Stone Beijing.

LANZHOU MANHATTAN IN GANSU PROVINCE We were inspired by the natural stratification of color in the mountains of LanZhou. Our facade design encorporates random but rational glass and stone widths and shades. By rationalizing a natural condition specific to LanZhou, we mantain ease of construction while lending cultural relevance. The client demanded an FAR of 10 as a result of a government mandate to relocate all displaced residents on the site into one of the new residential towers. The site was riddled with sun shading problems and existing building conflicts. However, in the end, the challenges of the site and high density paved way for an extremely dynamic urban mixed use project.

The sales office for Shi Mao’s Gong San Plaza in Beijing’s central neighbourhood of Sanlitun is a 2,200 square meter 3 level building with a steel structure. A floating balcony cantilevers out 8 meters from the southern most column. A recessed pocket of space provides vertical circulation with an escalator and hidden stair. The street, northern, and southern edges of the building provided the only opportunities for deep expression, as the west elevation backed into a construction barricade, and the space planing was rigid with several large sample apartments and a sample lobby. We needed an 18 meter clear span running the entire length of the building to accommodate those apartment floor plans and provide a parking garage on the ground level. The site was extremely tight, as it was not a priority of the developer to use space on the construction site for a temporary sales office. Many on site changes to the drawings resulted in some strange results in the final outcome. The last minute discovery of a gas main underneath the east column line created a huge added cost to the steel (see the bottom right image). This may have caused some value engineering that would terrify any architect. A short list of these changes include raising the top volume two meters and flattening it, removing all of the glass (no windows) from behind the perforated panels on the street elevation, removing all the metal mesh around the exterior stair, adding panelling where it wasn’t drawn, pulling the escalator out of its’ housing, reworking the balcony elevation by straightening out the lines, causing misalignment around the corner. Both thrilling and heartbreaking, Gong San Plaza was a major lesson in how Chinese clients and construction companies view the scope of an architects job. Overall, I was truly fortunate to have had this project opportunity, and despite the imperfections, the apartments are selling quite well, and that pleases everyone.
PROJECT GSP
PROJECT GSP
FLOATING GATE
浮空门
BEIJING CBD
Through this project, I set out to solve 21st century obstacles to urbanization in Beijing, China. Using a site in the heart of the Central Business District, I will attempt to link present and future iconic buildings to major public transit, to one another, and to new cultural attractions. These connections will happen inside an expansive enclosed overpass, an underground subway link, and an outdoor park and market. While solving several problems of its immediate surroundings, the project will also serve as a prototype to other neighborhoods in Beijing. In the absence of necessary infrastructure, the project considers commuter needs, consumer convenience, and cultural excitement, through a generous extension towards all surrounding buildings. Rather than cramming every programmatic element into the project, it serves as a support building to over programmed projects 360 degrees around it.In hopes to save Beijing from the autonomous multi-use complex, I will reclaim space leftover between oversized developments. Inventing a center to each group of isolated complexes should reduce traffic, enable public transit, and increase access to urban necessities. At worst, the project would be an opportunity cost in its generous allocation of noncommercial space. At best, it would form the exact connective tissue needed to morph Beijing into an energized and efficient city. The Chinese name for my project is Fu Kong Men, which has historic significance and modern relevance. It means floating gate, which is a reference to the historic gates of Beijing, but also connotes its mid air suspension. While Westerners would see this as a bridge, Chinese would see it as a portal, an entry, a gate. PROJECT FGB

March 1st 2013,
Dear Sir/Madam, I write this letter on behalf of Aaron DeWoskin, whom I worked with at Archiland International 筑土国际都市设计. My position with the firm is General Manager. I oversee all of the finances, human resources, and organizational matters in all three Archiland offices. I previously worked with several large multi-national firms such as Intel, KPMG, and Deloitte. I met Aaron three months after starting with Archiland and noticed immediately that he was different from other expatriates I have worked with in China. He carries with him an intimate knowledge of the Chinese market, client, and colleague. His Mandarin is quite good, and through his experience working here, he has found a successful formula for working inside hybrid local firms. I believe he is quite capable of bridging the gap in standards and expectations between international firms and local design institutes. While most staff only report to me when called upon or have a problem, Aaron arranged meetings with me every two months to sit and discuss the progress of the office, the status of the projects, and the success of the company. It is rare to find an employee who is not an equity partner or upper level manager concerned with the overall wellbeing of a business. Our relationship grew to a high level of mutual respect and understanding as a result of these meetings. In addition to designing a winning museum proposal for The Tianjin Eco City Master Plan Competition, Aaron also pleased several other major clients of ours with two high rise projects, an expo center, and a civic center. I received much positive feedback from our partners and our clients about concepts he designed. Aaron helped greatly in other ways as well. He ran a Rhinoceros and Grasshopper training program, mentored staff in both Beijing and Tianjin, and always elevated morale through humor and praise. I invited him to help me host the 2011 annual dinner. He spoke Mandarin to counterbalance his Chinese female co-host who presented in English. I found Aaron to be a truly unique and talented individual who will strongly benefit your organization on many levels. I would jump at the opportunity to bring him on board. Sincerely Yours,
Leo Wang 王大志 General Manager / Archiland International 筑土国际都市设计 MBA, M.A. Accounting and Finance

August 6, 2012 To whom it may concern: I am writing in recommendation of my close friend and respected colleague Aaron DeWoskin, who I understand is applying for a full-‐time position as a designer with your office. While I have known Aaron as a friend since our university days beginning in 1996, I am also writing as a fellow architect and designer. Aaron and I have always shared a lot of common interests both inside and out of school, but he didn't fully come onto my radar, so to speak, until the Spring of 1999. We were both studio mates under Professor John Hoal, who specialized in a method of design thinking that blended both architectural and urban design scales. In this particular case, we were challenged with the task of designing an inner-‐city school. In short, Aaron's was the design that caught everyone's attention. Although the site was fairly constrained, Aaron buried the gymnasium of the school in order to make a new playground, while packing all the classrooms into an elegant, thin bar. His approach was so well considered that the rest of us wondered why we did not think of the same thing. I still remember the design to this day. But this was then, and Aaron was just getting started. He has been a force of ideas and enthusiasm ever since. Now, his momentum has put him at the helm of some exciting designs, especially a recent competition win for a museum in Tianjin. Our geographic paths have diverged—I branched out to Tokyo, while Aaron delved into Shanghai and then Beijing. But arguably he has taken the more daring route, and has done so with dedication. He has not only learned to speak fluent Mandarin Chinese, but also has led projects both solo and with teams in several offices in China—even if he is the only American working in offices that barely speak English. These are just several aspects that show Aaron's willingness to tread a course that is less obvious, enviably out-‐of-‐bounds, and confidently, refreshingly individual. While Aaron's architectural pursuits can be described as focused, driven, and thoughtful, his efforts go well beyond work. He recently organized a worldwide competition for 21 of his friends, challenging each of us to learn a very difficult and esoteric sport that requires balance and coordination. And this was of course all possible because he already learned the otherwise impossible task in roughly four months' time. The sport is so challenging that it has opened up a whole new aspect of life, to many of us involved. In the process of learning something new, many of us have made connections via Aaron, friendships that otherwise would not have happened. Aaron is passionate, imaginative, and a great all-‐around addition to any team with the foresight to welcome him. But most importantly, he is the kind of person people like to be around—friendly, humorous, and full of heart. I recommend him strongly and without hesitation. Sincerely,
Balázs Bognár Project Manager/Project Lead
August 7th 2012 Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing this letter to recommend Aaron DeWoskin as a candidate for employment. Aaron was employed by Crate and Barrel as an architect from 2002 to 2005. contemporary home furnisings. of architecture as a method of distinguishing ourselves in the retail market. We maintain an in-house architecture studio in order to enable our architects to have as much exposure as possible to the issues posed by retail store design. Crate and Barrel Architecture Studio handles the design process through the design developement stage. We then team up with an outside associate architecture firmitfor working drawings. To whom maythe concern: Thisquick letter istotopick confirm Michael DeWoskin’s employment as an architect in thequestions, Aaron was upAaron on our needs. He asked detailed and relevant architecture department at Crate and Barrel. Aaron was employed here from January 15, 2002 striving to us as a client and working within our design constraints. His job to understand November 1, 2004. performance was superb. He put in many extra hours of work, checking every detail so that client presentations came off flawlessly. Whenever there was a problem, he was quick as Regards, well as thoughtful in coming up with a solution. His enthusiasm for learning was huge.
I grew to respect Aaron’s work ethic and his intelligence. At lunch on day, I mentioned that I was looking for a piano teacher to come to my house weekly to teach my three young children. Aaron enthusiastically said, “I can do that!” It was a surprise to me that Aaron was an accomplished pianist who had studied at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. It Turner surprisedJimmy me even more that a twenty four year old single young architect would have the Director of Architecture skill and Crate patience necessary to teach my children ages four, six, and nine. But he did, and and Barrel jturner@crateandbarrel.com with great success. I am convinced that whatever Aaron sets his mind to do, he will be able to accomplish quite well. He has energy, intelligence, patience and style. He would be a tremendous asset to your company. Please contact me if any further information is needed. Sincerely, Raymond Arenson Executive Vice-President of Merchandising and Design Crate and Barrel 1250 Techny Road Northbrook, Illinois 60062 rarenson@crateandbarrel.com
