The issue of political prisoners affects all Palestinian families as thousands of Palestinians are detained in Israeli prisons: around 7000 prisoners, including 400 children and nearly 70 women, are in detention today. And since 1967, between half a million and 800,000 Palestinians have been detained in total. Fighting against all forms of domination, the Art department of Laylac Center and the French painter Sania came together to collaborate on the issue of Palestinian political prisoners in association with the International Center for Popular Culture (CICP).

La question des prisonniers politiques touche toutes les familles palestiniennes puisque des milliers de Palestiniens sont détenus dans les prisons israéliennes: environ 7000 prisonniers, dont 400 enfants et près de 70 femmes, sont en détention aujourd’hui. Et depuis 1967, entre un demi-million et 800,000 Palestiniens ont été détenus au total. Luttant contre toute forme de domination, le département Art du centre Laylac et la peintre française Sania, ont travaillé ensemble sur la question des prisonniers politiques palestiniens, dans le cadre du jumelage avec le Centre international de culture populaire (CICP).

The Art department of Laylac was established by a group of artists in 2010 that chose art as a tool to express their ideas and beliefs. The participants have accomplished remarkable work since the group’s inception, spurred mostly by their common goal and vision. The team has developed itself through hard and ongoing trainings and practices that strengthened the relationships amongst the group. The members participated in many activities, whether it be locally in the camp and the city, nationally with other artist groups, or internationally through youth exchange programs. They became ambassadors of the Palestinian cause in global partnerships with other people around the world who share the same struggle. This book has enabled them to express their suffering and report on the different stages of arrest that take place between the administrative detention period and ultimately the release of the prisoners. In this regard, they have worked with the international artist Sania in order to complete this book.

The book’s purpose is to illustrate the Palestinian imprisonment and suffering endured in Israeli jails, while exposing its illegal practices.

Le département Art à Laylac a été créé par un groupe d’artistes en 2010, qui ont choisi l’art comme outil pour exprimer leurs idées. Les associés ont fait un travail remarquable depuis le départ, résultat d’une vision commune. Le groupe Art s’est développé à travers des formations et pratiques continues, renforçant ainsi les

relations dans le groupe. Les membres ont participé à de nombreuses activités locales dans le camp et dans la ville, à l’échelle nationale avec d’autres groupes d’artistes, et à l’échelle internationale par le biais de programmes d’échanges de jeunes. lls sont devenus des ambassadeurs de la cause palestinienne, en partenariat avec d’autres personnes dans le monde partageant le même combat. À travers ce livre, ils ont pu exprimer la souffrance des prisonniers politiques et décrire les différentes étapes d’arrestation, de la période de détention administrative jusqu’à la liberation des prisonniers. Ainsi, ils ont travaillé avec l’artiste internationale Sania afin de réaliser ce livre. Sania is a militant and self-taught painter. She engages freely with the social and political issues that are important to her in a sensitive, almost strippedraw fashion. Her paintings, at times raw and at times figurative and poetic, play with double meanings and appeal to the viewer’s sensitivity. Her work explores themes such as identity and exile. It calls for the freedom of movement, respect for human rights and personal dignity, end to immigration detention, liberation of political prisoners, justice for victims of police violence, and freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people…

Sania est une artiste peintre militante et autodidacte. Dans ses œuvres, elle traite en grande liberté des sujets sociaux et politiques qui lui tiennent à cœur, d’une manière sensible, presque écorchée vive. The Minister of prisoners Issa Qaraqe

Issa Qaraqe – the Palestinian Authority Prisoners’ Affairs Minister, an ex-prisoner and a writer – has known and suffered through imprisonment since his early childhood. He underwent many hunger strikes during his incarceration, each time fighting for freedom. His work did not cease when he was released, as he continued to fight for those remaining in prison.

He has used his position as Minister of prisoners and his talent for writing to disclose and describe the suffering of prisoners, and defend their rights locally and internationally. He still dreams of seeing Israeli prisons clear out and the Palestinian land free from occupation.

[ The project ] The project «In between» took place from October 2nd through October 15th, 2016, organized by the Art department of Laylac Center and the French painter Sania in the refugee camp of Dheisheh (Bethlehem), within the framework of the partnership between the International center for popular culture (CICP, Paris) and Laylac.

As such, 10 painters, men and women between the ages of 12 and 32, worked on the issue of the Palestinian political prisoners. The exhibition took place on October 16th, 2016, at the Ibdaa center (Dheisheh). The exhibition’s opening ceremony was introduced by the Minister of prisoners and many people, including political prisoners, were present at the event.

En plus de cela, si les Palestiniens peuvent être arrêtés à tout moment, de façon totalement arbitraire ou pour un motif précis, cet «entre-deux» est le quotidien de tous les hommes, femmes et enfants palestiniens: entre détention et «liberté», entre deux arrestations...

Chaque étape de l’emprisonnement – que ce soit «l’attente», l’arrestation, la détention elle-même (loi d’exception de l’Apartheid), le jugement, la remise en liberté ou la période qui suit la libération – évoque différents sentiments et émotions contradictoires pour les prisonniers politiques ainsi que leurs familles et proches. Se mêlent ainsi angoisse, stress, sentiments d’injustice et de punition, inquiétude, solitude, désespoir, force, résistance, fierté et solidarité... Her painting reflects on one of the interrogation tools used against Palestinian prisoners by the Israeli occupation. This method – whereby Palestinian prisoners are hung by their wrists for an extended period of time – is commonly used in Israeli prisons for its effectiveness in extracting information.

Sa peinture porte sur un des outils d’interrogatoire utilisé par l’occupation israélienne contre les prisonniers palestiniens. The presence of Palestinian women in Israeli jails is also an important means to oppose the brutality and injustices of the Israeli occupation.

This painting is a representation of the time passing by while in detention and the wait that comes with it. In these moments, prisoners reflect on how the detention is going to change them and their relatives. But it also brings forth contradictory feelings ranging from wanting to abandon to finding strength to resist...

Cette toile aborde la question de l’attente durant la période de détention. Dans ces moments, les prisonniers se questionnent à quel point la prison va les changer, ainsi que leurs proches. His painting considers the ability of the prisoners to use their stomach and all possible means, albeit limited, to protest and fight for the dignity that has been denied them by the Israeli occupation. Hunger strike is an experience that most Palestinians in Israeli prisons have undertaken, as a unique and effective way to fight the occupation. In his painting, we can see the symbols of their resistance.

Sa peinture reflète la capacité des prisonniers à utiliser leurs estomacs et le peu qu’ils possèdent pour protester et se battre pour la dignité qui leur a été prise par l’occupation israélienne. Être en grève de la faim est une expérience dont la plupart des Palestiniens ont vécu dans les prisons israéliennes, comme un moyen unique et efficace de lutter contre cette occupation. Her painting describes a child who is confused about his state, as he is unable to tell whether he is in jail or has been released. In such situations, a part of the prisoner still lives inside while the other part wants to be out.

Laylac Center

LAYLAC stands for «The Palestinian Youth Action Center for Locality Development» since 2005. General assembly members consensually came to two conclusions. For one, the youth sector has been systematically marginalized, and secondly, they have been decreasingly taken into consideration in the process of addressing those issues. As such, the state of affairs surrounding local communities and the development of the Palestinian society at large stands as the main focus of the group’s activity.

LAYLAC représente depuis 2005 «Le centre local d’action de la jeunesse palestinienne». Les membres de l’assemblée générale sont parvenue à deux constats: le premier étant que le secteur de la jeunesse a continuellement été délaissé. Deuxièmement, ce secteur a été de moins en moins pris en compte dans les travaux de réflexion sur la jeunesse. Ainsi, les enjeux locaux et le développement de la société palestinienne sont au centre de son activité. ‫ وبناءًا على توصيات خرج بها عدد من النشطاء‬.٢٠٠٥ ‫تم تأسیس مركز العمل الشبابي للتنمیة المجتمعیة لیلك في عام‬ ‫ تم إعادة صياغة‬.٢٠١٢ ‫والشباب الفاعل في مخيم الدهيشة في العام‬ ‫فلسفة المؤسسة ومراجهة رؤيتها الشاملة وأهدافها وبرامجها بحيث‬ ‫تصبح قادرة على استيعاب الطاقة الشبابیة في المجتمع المحيط لتنمية‬ ‫وتطوير مهاراتهم االبداعية وتوفير منصة لهم للتعبير عن آرائهم‬ ‫ ومن هنا يهدف المركز إلى احتضان هذه الطاقات‬.‫وإسماع صوتهم‬ ‫ لتطویرها‬،‫ مثل التعليم البديل‬،‫الشبابیة وتوفیر المستلزمات‬ .‫واستنهاضها مما سیؤدي الى تطویر المجتمع الفلسطیني ككل‬
