reducing our targeted carbon footprint but we are saving thousands of pounds on our energy bills and will be benefiting from a £10,080 tax rebate for a number of our signs – the savings are incredible.

SAVE MONEY, SAVE ENERGY COSTS, SAVE TAX AND SAVE THE PLANET! Signs Now UK – the award winning Sign Business of the Year is working closely with local companies to help reduce their energy bills. In partnership with the world’s leading LED manufacturer Sloan, they can help businesses benefit from reduced energy bills and Enhanced Tax Benefits through the ECA scheme.

LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) have revolutionised energyefficient lighting using on average 20% (or less!) of the energy required to power a traditional filament or energy saving lamp but offering improved luminescence. LED lighting products should last more than 50,000 hours, and with the exceptionally low failure rate, maintenance is virtually eliminated. LED lighting is solid-state and does not have a filament and so is virtually indestructible. LED’S are so efficient and long lasting that you can reasonably expect an illuminated sign to work for over 11 years without any problem. By fitting just one Goodyear Dunlop sign (17.5 metres x 5 metres) Signs Now UK were able to forecast, that over that time an energy saving of 83.9% and a saving on maintenance and repair of £3,343 per annum would be achieved. The energy savings alone reduce the carbon emissions by a massive 25.89 Metric Tonnes.

(Left to Right) Carlo Matarazzo Manager of Signs Now UK and Chris Cheal from Goodyear Dunlop. The ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance) Scheme is a key part of the UK government’s programme to manage climate change. It is managed by the Carbon Trust (www.carbontrust.co.uk) and was introduced in 2001 to encourage businesses to invest in the latest energy saving technology. The scheme provides businesses with enhanced tax relief for investment in equipment that meets published energy saving criteria, and allows the full cost of an investment in designated energy saving equipment to be written off against the taxable profits of the period in which the investment is made. GOODYEAR DUNLOP Signs Now UK have been working closely with Goodyear Dunlop the world’s leading tyre manufacturer who are a global presence, with sites worldwide, and main offices based here at sites across the West Midlands. Goodyear Dunlop is very excited by the potential to not only reduce their carbon footprint, but also their huge energy bills, by the introduction of LED technology. The substantial tax rebates are extremely attractive too. Chris Cheal, Facilities Manager and Energy Saving Expert for Goodyear Dunlop, says “Not only are we

The initial investment to fit this sign with LED’s was established at £16,890 (it is a very big sign and challenging to reach). However the taxman looks very favourably on this type of green

investment and offers a 100% tax allowance, thanks to the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme, with the result that the payback time for this one sign is only just over 12 months! Signs Now UK has put together an impressive team to ensure that clients get the maximum savings and benefits from the use of Sloan LED technology. As part of their proposal they offer a unique system which consists of Energy Saving, ECA calculations and total annual savings.

Their policy has always been one of responsiveness; demonstrated by superior customer service, adapting to changing energy conditions and listening to their customers’ needs. They are not just about building boilers but of bringing warmth into people’s lives from the heart of a modern home's heating system.

Baxi receives Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation UK heating manufacturer Baxi, whose UK head office is based in Coventry Road, Warwick, is proud to announce that it has received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

Chris Tyrer shows the dignitaries round the Ecogen assembly line.

Baxi says: “Providing warmth. That's what we do. And we do it by creating efficient heating and hot water solutions for homes and businesses.”

Baxi Directors with Mayors and Mayoresses of South Ribble and Preston and Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire.

The prestigious accolade is for the Baxi Ecogen, the first domestic micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) boiler to be launched in the UK marketplace. CHP stands for 'combined heat and power'. This means the Baxi Ecogen is a dual energy system, so at the same time as providing efficient gas central heating and hot water like any other boiler, it also generates up to 1kWh of low cost, low carbon electricity. It is the first micro-CHP product to achieve Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certification, meaning it is also eligible for the Government's Feed-in Tariff - providing financial assistance to lower fuel bills even further. Speaking of the award, Managing Director of the Baxi’s UK Residential Boiler Division, Andrew Keating, said: “We are really proud of this fantastic achievement. It is a privilege for us to receive the award during Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee year, and is testament to the dedication and hard work of all the teams involved in Ecogen’s success.” The Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation is one of the most prestigious accolades in the UK, and recognises some of the nation's outstanding achievements in business. Andrew went on to say “The Baxi EcogenTM has been at the core of our push for innovative solutions and for this reason, it has been accredited the award this year.” Baxi was established in 1866 by Richard Baxendale and Joseph Heald, and has always been at the forefront of innovation. In 1966, it launched the Baxi Bermuda back boiler unit, which revolutionised home heating. More recently, in 2011, Baxi was the first boiler manufacturer to include a combustion management system in its boilers as standard, providing exceptional energy efficiency and cost savings for householders compared to a standard boiler. Today Baxi is the lead brand of BDR Thermea, and one of the largest boiler manufacturers in Europe. Baxi continues its commitment to innovate with a product portfolio that includes award winning boilers and one of the largest ranges of renewables in the market.

building *SV E KVIIRIV JYXYVI

Building for the future has never been more critical for the planet than before. Carbon footprints, energy consumption, and sustainability - you will have had to have been on a completely different planet not to have come across these already. The construction industry has a key role to play in this, with building projects being responsible for some 30% of global CO2 emissions and 40% of global resource consumption, according to one set of figures. Green building methods - an approach to building and architecture that favours environmentally sound and resource efficient methods that last through a building’s lifecycle - far from being the ‘home-underground’ preserve of a bearded few, are now the commercial, industrial and public norm.

They will hold all the usual architectural qualifications but some go further and gain specific accreditations to underline their green or environmental knowledge. So, how do you find a green architect? A quick look on the internet reveals many options and forums. AECB, the Sustainable Building Association (www.aecb.net) has a member search facility and the Royal Institute of British Architects (www.architecture.com) is an obvious stopping off point, but one of the best ways is to ask around for recommendations and draw up a list of potential candidates. Then it’s a case of taking all of them through your project, making a careful study of their portfolios and asking some pertinent questions, such as which green building techniques they favour and why. Other aspects to consider include:

C U S TOM E R SOLUTI ON S Finding a green architect with whom you can work and who shares your vision can be seen to be akin to finding gold.

They will incorporate into the design energy efficient techniques, such as solar thermal or geothermal heating and cooling techniques.

• Energy efficiencies: Are there any you specifically want in your building and what does the architect have to say about these? Will they suggest alternatives or modifications? • The construction firm: Does the architect work with a builder who shares the green construction values? • Will you be able to work with this architect’s? Ask yourself if they really are listening to what you want or perhaps they’re too busy to devote the time you require spent on your project. But how to design a green building? This is where the services of green architects - specialists in designing architecture that is sustainable, non-harmful to the environment, and energy efficient are now highly sought after. Most architects work in a way that pays heed to the environment, but those that define themselves specifically as green architects focus on designing buildings that are sustainable and will not harm the environment, even to the extent that the construction or adaptation of a building will work with the natural surroundings. Alongside a whole range of environmentallyfriendly options, they will incorporate into the design energy efficient techniques, such as solar thermal or geothermal heating and cooling techniques, or the use of a type of wood, stone or other material.

Of course, time spent visiting other green buildings designed by your potential architect and talking to those living in them is time well spent and should be done if at all possible.

VI SI T www.aecb.net www.architecture.com

At the end of the day, the value of doing your own research on green buildings and current green building methods can’t be under-estimated as it will be you who will be using the space once it has been constructed or adapted. Some of the most beautiful buildings around are those which demonstrate that we can live in harmony with the planet. Finding a green architect with whom you can work and who shares your vision can be seen to be akin to finding gold.

THE EYES AND EARS OF ENGINEERS FLOW monitoring trail-blazer Environmental Ltd has one philosophy and one vision - to ensure its clients can do business and, while they do that, to be the eyes and ears of the engineer. One of the UK’s largest flow monitoring companies, providing flow data to the majority of water companies and their consultants, this is an accomplished, experienced, multitalented and forward-thinking professional organisation delivering successful solutions through its people’s energy and expertise and the innovative use of the latest technology. “We’ve built a company that is different,” says general manager Jon Kirkland - and it was different enough to secure the prestigious Thames Water Thames Tunnel project

them and which is dedicated to bringing in the correct solutions exactly to customers’ requirements and budget. From its launch in 2003, Environmental has built the skills and capability to deliver the complete range of flow monitoring services while also devoting itself to listening to what clients want and meeting those wants. Be it flow surveys, flow quality sampling, sewer and asset investigations, Infiltration surveys, connectivity surveys, impermeable area studies, CCTV pipe inspections, permanent equipment installations or BA safety crews, Environmental has the expert team for the job.

This will see a 25km ‘mega sewer’ following the Thames 67m underground and connecting polluting overflows to capture sewage which would otherwise spill into the river, and transfer it to sewage works for treatment. The first phase of this massive scheme has seen Environmental, based in Worcester, Worcestershire, installing specialist sampling equipment to measure foul water samples from the overflows but on a scale never before seen in the UK. But this is a company that thrives on challenges, can provide a team with considerable experience and techniques in overcoming

“We've worked hard to get some very simple, common sense things right,” Jon declares. “We've worked at developing and keeping the right people, training, skills, and investing in the right equipment to give us total control.. The company forms a close partnership with clients to offer these bespoke solutions, buoyed by a wealth of practical and technical support and advice, along with an expert and completely independent and professional approach to flow measurement. The result is not just providing the right solution for the job but the development of long-term relationships based on trust,

integrity, reliability and adaptability and a strengthened ongoing commitment to excellent customer service. Nothing is done, however, at the expense of the safety of employees, the public, site, and the work. “That remains a critical priority and a central part of our policy,” emphasises Jon. “Our workforce is fully trained and regularly updated in all relevant aspects of health and safety and benefits from the latest safety equipment.” Add a professional, courteous and tidy approach, determination and an inherent flexibility to get the job done and you can see why so many, when it comes to Environmental Ltd, are happy to - go with the flow.

EcoVent (Renewable Energy) Ltd www.ecoventltd.co.uk

EcoVent: Future Proofing your development, your environment and your investment. EcoVent, a new name in the field of mechanical heat recovery and ventilation, based at Cradley, near Malvern, is building an excellent reputation among some of the leading housebuilders in the Three Counties. They have specified and installed MVHR systems to high specification homes, which have been manufactured by leading Timber frame, SIPs panel and Oak frame suppliers. Each property having a system designed specifically for the required air flow and air tightness specification. The payback time on capital expenditure is expected to be less than 5 years. Ecologically friendly methods of heating are becoming increasingly relevant, both from a cost and an environmentally friendly standpoint. EcoVent design and specify systems to meet the ever increasing demands of everyday living. Through careful design and planning they can provide systems specifically matched to both the individual and the building’s requirements. To have the technical ability to provide Eco Friendly heating and also fresh, clean and filtered air whilst at the same time recovering heat is a huge ecological and environmental benefit. Recovering the heat which would otherwise be lost not only helps the environment but saves the user money. The benefit is compounded within the building through optimized climate, energy efficiency and preserved value.

Alastair Symon MD says “We are leading our field in offering products that will give homeowners and building occupants a better indoor climate, a climate for life. Our products also help in buildings becoming carbon neutral. Using bolt on systems such as ground to air heat exchangers as part of an MVHR system give manifold benefits, as these heat exchangers are highly efficient, providing seasonal benefits in indoor climate temperature control. Helix Probes, are the ideal optimum choice if only a small land area is

available and probe drilling is not possible, e.g. for geological reasons, or if it is not financially viable, extract heat energy from the ground through a closed circuit at a depth of around 5 m. In conjunction with a heat pump the extracted heat is raised to the temperature needed.” EcoVent has the all the capabilities to complete fully integrated systems efficiently, reliably and on budget for commercial, industrial and domestic projects.

e s r siv g o r for all seasons

Progressive have found that fire and water do mix! For nearly 40 years, they have been successfully combining the two to form a company that really is for all seasons. Carl Enticott took over the well established business (35 years,) two years ago, upon the retirement of previous owner John Taylor, having previously worked for the company for eight years, most recently as contracts manager.

Their services include the ongoing care of your investment; with service and maintenance including chemicals and accessories for your pool. As Gas Safe and HETAS registered engineers they are also able to provide gas fire and boiler servicing and repairs, fireplace accessories and solid fuel Stoves, fires and fuel supplies. There is a sound commercial logic behind the company’s structure. Carl explained “The main part of the swimming pool side runs from March to October, and that is its busiest time of year. The fire and fireplace side ticks over all year, reaching a peak in the winter. If we aren’t busy on the pools, we are on the fire retail and installation side. Carl and the team have seen many changes and developments in the swimming pool market, from the predominately outdoor pool, mainly for summer use, to thermally insulated all season indoor pool complexes and easy to erect above ground pools. Progressive supply and install pools in a wide variety of styles with extras such as counter current machines, lights, music, steam rooms, spas, saunas and hot tubs and make it a point of pride to keep abreast of all the latest developments.

Since taking over, Carl has breathed new life into the already successful business, by introducing new training programmes, new IT procedures, refurbishing the showrooms, and employing new staff, especially a new Contracts Manager and Pool & Gas Safe Engineers. The existing team of 6 are delighted by Carl’s success, and are fired with enthusiasm to see the company going from strength to strength, and winning new business, alongside their established customer base. Based in Lawford Road, Rugby, and covering an approximate radius of 100 miles, Progressive have been designing, constructing, selling, installing and exporting all things swimming pools 1971. At the same time they have been supplying and installing quality fireplaces for over 25 years. Their showroom displays both sides of the business with a stunning range of fires and fire places, including gas, electric, multi fuel stoves, and solid fuel. On the other side you will find all things pool related.

Surveying the Cost of Commercial Property Alps Group is more than a property agency; they provide professional and practical solutions to commercial property management helping companies to move away from excessive and costly estate management teams. With an experienced team of experts it’s easy to see why Alps Group have become a trusted outsourced property department for many of its global clients including Nestlé, Baxi, Pilkington and Invensys.

Martin Purslow Lead Building Surveyor

“Conversely, landlords can be left with a property that has been subject to unreasonable damage by the vacating tenants that they are unable to re-let without substantial and costly repairs. “From either side, it is therefore vital that a professional survey of a building is completed before a lease is signed to protect both parties from being faced with un-budgeted bills when the lease comes to an end. “The current climate further exacerbates this danger as tenants can potentially go out of business overnight or a landlord could be looking at ways of recouping as much cost as possible. “Consulting a building surveyor could mean the difference between breathing a huge sigh of relief that all eventualities have been properly and professionally addressed rather than looking back in hindsight and then being left to count the cost.”

Since the company was founded in 2000, Alps Group has built and maintained a reputation for delivering professional and practical property advice, and their clients are safe in the knowledge that they only pay for property services when needed.

Reinforcements. Because your business depends on buildings.

One service that Alps Group has seen a significant rise in demand for is Building Consultancy advice, Lead Building Surveyor Martin Purslow, explains more: “Hindsight is said to be a wonderful thing, but leaving lease agreements to chance can be an expensive luxury – leaving commercial property owners, landlords and tenants at significant risk of facing costly bills.” Martin explained this issue could potentially be putting commercial property owners and tenants at risk and rueing the day that they did not take proper professional advice. He said: “Tenants are often faced with a dilapidations bill when they vacate the property and, if they have not had the building professionally surveyed when they first signed the lease, they could potentially have to pay for the building to be repaired to a state that was far superior to the one they originally occupied.

Property. Done Properly. Alps Group provide professional and practical solutions to commercial property management, helping our clients to move away from excessive and costly estate management teams.

Our clients include Nestlé, Baxi, Pilkington and Invensys, and they trust us as their outsourced property department safe in the knowledge that they only pay for property services when needed.

Gaffney and Guinan Gaffney and Guinan are a family run business based in Coventry, who are solid wall insulation installers. The company was established in 1996, and mainly covers Coventry and the Midlands, but the team has worked as far afield as Liverpool and London.

The whole insulation industry is flourishing, and Gaffney and Guinan are looking forward to a very busy future. Their order books are full and they expect to treble their turnover during the next 2 years. This volume of business keeps the co-founders fully occupied out on site, ensuring that everything runs smoothly, while son/nephew Phil is more office based. Gaffney and Guinan are part of the drive to keep our homes warm while saving energy, and are committed to offering all their clients, a first class service using the most energy efficient products.

For more information ring Phil on:

02476 449066 Insulating solid walls can be done from either the inside or outside. Externally, insulation boards are mechanically fixed to the substrate and then covered with cladding, brickwork or render. Internally, insulation boards are attached to the walls and then faced with plaster board ready for re-decoration. We are all aware of the benefits of improving the insulation of our homes, by using cavity wall insulation or extra loft insulation; solid wall insulation takes the process a step further. As part of the nationwide drive to reduce energy use, Gaffney and Guinan carry out much of their work for commercial builders and energy companies, particularly in social housing.

Shard End Library - Shard End Library project Birmingham – Project undertaken in March 2012 WHEN the sun shines on one of Birmingham’s newest buildings, causing it to change colour, Chris Berry of Nason Foster Interiors can’t help but reflect on a job well done. His company’s supply and installation of joinery for the highly-acclaimed £1.9million Birmingham building, which has already gained iconic status, marks a high-point in a 45-year history already filled with landmark achievements. “It was one of our greatest business successes,” says managing director Chris of the sharply-pointed building, partly covered in "chameleon cladding", which uses crystals to alter its hue and is at the centre of the Shard End Urban redevelopment scheme. “It presented a number of challenges to the project team but, through effective collaborative working between John Hunt Associates, Thomas Vale, Birmingham City Council and ourselves, a fantastic community facility was handed over on time to the local population.”

Indeed, the compliments flowed thick and fast with city council library services manager Kevin Duffy hailing the quality of Nason Foster’s work “exemplary” and John Hunt Associations lauding the “unique quality” of the company’s “interpretation, intelligent detailing, quality workmanship and enthusiasm”. It’s proof, if proof were needed, of the reputation this Birmingham interior fit out and joinery manufacturing specialist has gained over the decades, which have seen it work with some of the nation’s biggest high street names. It has been delivering shop-fitting projects for retailers since the 1980s with Kurt Geiger, Selfridges and World Duty Free as key valued clients. It also supplies and installs joinery for construction and commercial interiors companies such as Thomas Vale, Overbury and Estilo Interiors and is well known for undertaking retail shop-fitting projects in the challenging airport environments, which bring specific logistical challenges.

31310 2.5pgs.qxd:Carford Group 05/08/2012 15:50 Page 2

Renowned for its shop-fitting expertise, producing quality joinery products and investment in employee training, Nason Foster is able to take responsibility for an entire fitout of work and leisure interior environments using its inhouse contacts managers, joiners and trusted supply chain partners.

“We are also an approved Corian fabricator which is used in a variety of applications but most notably as kitchen worktops, reception desk surfaces and in washrooms,” reveals Chris.

The magic begins in its 16,000 sq ft facility, its home since being established in the 1960s, which houses offices, a joinery workshop, paint spray facility, storage areas and its own transport fleet. Here, bespoke joinery is produced for the retail, commercial, leisure and health and education sectors with specialities including: reception desks, vanity units, retail shopfittings, shopfronts, display cabinets, counters, kitchen units, worktops and wall paneling.

“In addition to working in the retail and commercial sectors we are also hoping to grow the business by attracting new clients in the health, education and leisure sectors where our joinery skills and fit-out expertise are best suited.”

Selfridges Trafford - Menswear Department in Selfridges Trafford Centre, Manchester - Project undertaken in November 2011

All the joiners are City and Guilds qualified and site personnel have the necessary Construction Skills certification, while the workshop itself includes top-notch equipment such as a Reichenbacher CNC router using the latest CAD technology. Even being among the very best doesn’t mean the current economic climate has been without its challenges but Nason Foster still has much to celebrate and look forward to.

The fundamental principles of the business are customer satisfaction and attention to detail. These principles came very much to the fore during a move into larger premises during July 2011; despite having two large contracts in hand, they moved premises without losing a single working day, and successfully completed the orders on time. Glass Bonding Ltd considers success to be an order, large or small, completed perfectly, to their exacting standards, on price, and on time.

Midlands manufacturer of glass products, Glass Bonding Ltd, are going from strength to strength and looking forward to the launch of yet another exciting new product and the opportunities it will bring; from April 2012 they will be offering sprayed coloured glass, suitable for splash backs etc.

Their core business is the UV Bonding of display cabinets, food servery counters, jewellery cabinets etc., and then in early 2011 they launched a fabulous new furniture range consisting of a wide choice of stylish and modern pieces, including bespoke items, which have proved very successful among homeowners and interior designers alike. Their customer base, for display units has developed over the past 8 years to include a number of the UK’s most prestigious high street stores such as Dune Shoes, Harvey Nicholls, Next, Selfridges, Debenhams and Fenwicks. The future is looking very bright for Glass Bonding Ltd.

Surveillance UK Do you suspect your Husband or Wife of Cheating? Could you tell if they were? At the offices of Surveillance UK, they have seen a sharp rise in request to establish if a client’s partner be it a wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend or same sex is cheating on them. When asked Lee Turner, owner of Surveillance UK told BBP “Currently at the moment throughout the UK, we have seven individuals under surveillance in cheating partner related cases. On average we generally deal with around nine cases a month, but now we are averaging twenty two cases’ un-trust in a relationship has never been as high.”

a government lead incentive to help combat Tenancy fraud. “Things are getting exciting for us” says Lee, “Our teams hard work and exceptional results have not gone unrecognised, and with the government providing Local authorities a budget of £19million to combat tenancy and benefit fraud, it’s rewarding to know that they have looked at the skill’s, results and attitude of Surveillance UK and our teams, and chosen to invite us to the conference in July where we will get the opportunity to showcase our company to MP’s and the leaders of all the Local authorities in the UK”

So Why? Why do partners cheat on each other? “There is no one deifying answer” says Lee, “Guilty pleasure, the thrill and excitement, or simply because one of them as fell out of love. These are all factors, of an endless list.” Surveillance UK while covering the whole of the UK, also work on other case’s and not just cheating partners, they help combat benefit and insurance fraud, employee theft, and continue to work with a number of large companies to tackle crime in the workplace. In July they have been asked to attend

“It’s our team’s attitudes and commitment to their work and of course their surveillance skill’s that also help clients suspicions of a cheating partner be validated. Using a number of surveillance skills including covert, static mobile and technical surveillance they can observe record and document the movements of individuals with out there presents ever being detected, They are almost like ghost!” “We have an exceptional team of surveillance operatives both male and female at Surveillance UK, and the thing that makes us different than the rest is our aftercare. Catching a cheating partner and sitting a client down to show them the footage, and explaining what took place is both stressful and very emotional. What people don’t take into account in this business is the bigger picture of their results. At surveillance UK we do, our results don’t just impact the three people involved, but the wider family, children on both sides and of course, should the person cheating, in some case’s their partner to. We don’t just close the door once the job is done, we stick with our clients and offer them and their families a full after care service for as long as they need it. That why we stand out.

Good Credit Management Practices during turbulent economic times The fact that a business is here today and is creditworthy does not mean that it will be tomorrow, next week or next year – or in fact that it will still be in business. If a customer becomes insolvent and cannot pay money that is due to your business it can be catastrophic, especially if the amount involved is large. It is impossible to avoid the now almost daily updates informing us of the difficulties for the Eurozone and the economic numbers emerging for the UK economy. Good Credit Management Practice suggests that companies ask themselves the following questions during these turbulent economic times: •

Are you confident that your most important customers are not at risk of failure?

•

If the ‘riskiness’ of a customer rises, do you have sufficient controls and monitoring in place to ensure you see it happening?

•

Are you happy with the amount of detailed information you can gather on your potential and existing customers?

•

Can your business afford the risk of expanding into new and unknown markets?

•

Can your business achieve sufficient and profitable growth while taking all the risk itself?

•

Does your business have all the necessary credit management expertise in-house?

•

Have you worked out the impact of late or non-payment by major customers on your business, and how you would survive it?

•

Credit reference checks (in the UK and abroad)

•

Country and trade sector reports

•

Receivables management (outsourcing of a business’ credit control function)

•

Debt collection

Coface has a variety of credit insurance solutions to suit the cover requirements of most types of businesses whether trading domestically or overseas. We also specialise in providing business and credit information worldwide allowing businesses to make informed decisions about trading on credit terms. Our database holds information on over 55 million companies worldwide. Additionally we also offer flexible, scalable debt recovery solutions both domestically and overseas.

If the answer is no to some or all of these, your business could benefit from trading with your partners with credit insurance protection against the risk of bad debts or, in certain circumstances, late or non-payment. Credit insurers have access to more up-to-date and detailed information than is readily and publicly available and in many cases, online credit management tools for managing contracts can simplify processes. Companies may be able to raise finance more readily if their sales are being credit insured (e.g. bank borrowings, invoice finance from a bank or financier) and credit insurers can provide associated benefits through their network of services, for example

scheme. Following MACH 2010 our team helped 14 clients to achieve tax refunds of over £850,000, and we are now continuing to help them reclaim more on an ongoing basis. Even some prospects we made two years ago have now become clients and we are in the process of helping them with their claims. As specialists we can save a company thousands of pounds by netting a successful corporation tax reclaim for that year, in addition to annual reductions on their corporation tax bills going forward. “The timing of MACH 2012 tied in with further improvements to R and D tax relief for SMEs, as the enhancement of R and D expenditure increased to 125 per cent on 1 April. It’s never been more important for UK manufacturing companies to consider claiming R and D tax relief. RESEARCH and Development tax reclaim experts R & D Tax Claims had a successful MACH 2012 at the NEC, Birmingham, in April. MACH 2012 is the major bi-annual UK based international showcase for manufacturing and engineering industries, with over 490 exhibitors attending. The show attracted over 21,000 visitors from the UK and overseas, with the Rt Hon Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, visiting midweek to talk with exhibitors.

“Many businesses are not aware that what they do qualifies as R and D. Manufacturing can encompass engineering, electronics, pharmaceutical, bio-tech and communication systems and any business involved in exploring new products or niche markets, developing in-house software or even environmental improvements could be eligible. There are around 150,000 SMEs in the UK alone that could benefit, but less than 10,000 of them actually claim, therefore over 93 per cent of eligible SMEs are missing out. “Over the last three years we have submitted over £6 million in successful tax claims to HMRC on behalf of companies and we have a 100 per cent success rate in proving claims. As we operate on a no win, no fee basis, businesses have nothing to lose. “Many companies are put off applying because they assume it will be time consuming but in fact it can be dealt with very quickly, and the paperwork takes around two weeks. We’re happy to work with the company’s own accountants. We can quickly identify if a business is carrying out quantifiable R and D and then liaise directly with HMRC, with whom we have an excellent, long standing reputation, to ensure a positive outcome. The skill is in presenting a watertight case that proves without doubt the existence of R and D activities.”

Baron Bhattacharyya [IPGSQIW MRGVIEWIH MRZIWXQIRX

MR XVEMRMRK ERH XIGLRSPSK] Baron Bhattacharyya, of Moseley welcomes increased investment in training and technology and a change of culture for UK business. He urges the Government to make the economic crisis a turning point for British manufacturing. Lord Bhattacharyya, the influential businessman who played a key role in enabling car giant Tata to take over Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) came to Birmingham from Bangladesh in his 20’s; becoming Professor of Manufacturing Systems at the University of Warwick in 1980, and founding the Warwick Manufacturing Group in the same year. From its inception WMG’s mission has been to improve the competitiveness of organisations around the world through the application of value added innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigour to industrial and organisational practice. He is critical of business attitudes in the UK, saying: “Let me tell you how companies work – it's about short-termism. You're a chief executive, your term is three or four years, and you want to maximise your bonus. So what do you do? You bring in consultants who restructure the group and shut businesses rather than making them work. So the results look good this year and next, but forget about the long term.” “For decades, the national hunger for a fast buck meant that longstanding industries were decimated. British expertise vanished and excellence in technology went overseas. We outsourced our industrial heritage and now we are paying the price.” He argued “The British economy still suffers from low rates of capital investment, as it has for 50 years. In this country there has been no mechanism, other than government subsidy, for R&D. For small manufacturing enterprises to be the seedbed of innovation, exploitation of their ideas requires investment from larger, generally foreign, firms." Companies locate their R&D where they feel the expertise exists, so it is important to invest in education for engineering and technology, to create a workforce capable of meeting the needs of industry. Lord Bhattacharyya said “On the vocational side there is a shortage of technicians and people below graduate level, we produce enough graduates, they just don't go into engineering.” So the new education programme, the Advanced Skills Accreditation Scheme (ASAS) which was developed by WMG and JLR to boost the skills of UK engineers working within the automotive supply chain and other hi-tech industries, is particularly good news. This sector-wide skills programme, led by Semta the sector skills council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies, is supported through the Government’s Growth and Innovation Fund with a £1m boost from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. The funding means the scheme can be open to companies of all sizes within the UK. The scheme is fully endorsed by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology and is expected to attract engineers from over 2000 companies in England who will undertake 5000 Master’s degree module places over the next two years.

Baron Bhattacharyya Lord Bhattacharyya, as Chairman of WMG comments “We are extremely pleased to be continuing our relationship with JLR, by developing this new scheme that all UK companies can take participate in. UK manufacturing is going to benefit from having many more highly trained engineers, who will help to reinvigorate the industry and improve the skills base”. He says, "In manufacturing there is no substitute for producing outstanding products, well-designed and of high reliability, based on a sound understanding of market needs and produced at a price that smart customers find attractive. When times are tough, manufacturing companies need to be bold. It is a time for innovation, new investment in R&D, effective design, efficient processes and exceptional reliability. From bold innovation will come brilliant technology and spectacularly successful companies that create wealth.” Image courtesy of WMG

This globally renowned automotive company originated with a ÂŁ1000 loan made in 1922 to William Lyons and his partner William Walmsley to establish The Swallow Sidecar Company, a manufacturer of stylish aluminium motorcycle sidecars, based in Blackpool, England. A clever businessman, Lyons later realised that future success lay in the development of the emerging automobile market and so realigned the business to focus on coach built cars, which later evolved into stylish but affordable luxury saloons.

Jaguar Heritage Museum Jaguar Est. 1922 Jaguar is a successful British luxury car manufacturer with a long and illustrious heritage dating back to the early beginnings of the automotive industry. It has an extensive historic vehicle collection and archive currently at The Jaguar Heritage Museum which is run by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and is located at the site of the former Jaguar factory in Browns Lane, Coventry (The museum will sadly close on the 24 August 2012. However the archive and part of the vehicle collection will be temporarily housed at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon until a new dedicated museum is built in the near future.)

In recent years, Jaguar has manufactured cars for the British Prime Minister along with holding royal warrants from HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Charles. Its iconic cars are designed at its engineering centres at Gaydon in Warwickshire and Whitley in Coventry, being assembled nearby at its Castle Bromwich factory in Birmingham.

Along with affordability and performance, Lyons was particularly obsessed with styling. Building cars with ‘outrageously’ long bonnets that were low to the ground for a sleeker aesthetic appeal, his SS I sports coupĂŠ of 1931 was reported by one newspaper as a car that had the look of a ÂŁ1000 car and yet cost only ÂŁ310. These three attributes, style, performance and affordability remain three key values of the company to this day.

31239 4pgs:Carford Group 06/08/2012 11:13 Page 2

In 1934, Walmsley left the company, leaving Lyons to pursue his automotive ambitions alone. This led onto the new SS 'Jaguar' range in 1935, from which of course the company subsequently derived its name. Following on from these successful beginnings, further innovative design and engineering development led inevitably into competitive racing. Two of the proudest eras in Jaguar's long history in motor sport involved winning the Le Mans 24 hours race five times in the 1950s (1951, 1953,1955, 1956 and 1957) and again three decades later with the TWR Jaguar team in 1988 and 1990. The Browns Lane museum houses a selection from Jaguar Heritage's collection of over 140 historic vehicles and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the company. Each vehicle on display is a true icon of a by-gone era and symbolises a significant milestone in the continuing development and growth of Jaguar Cars and its associated companies. Alongside the vehicles are classic photographs of iconic drivers and race winners, advertisements, trophies and displays charting the history of innovative engine design and other significant achievements. The collection was originally established in the mid-1950s when William Lyons brought together some of his early models, which can now be seen alongside classic Jaguar racing cars and other iconic models from the more recent past. Images, brochures and factory records from the Jaguar Heritage archives also give valuable insights into how these beautiful cars were produced.

Other innovations, of course happened underneath the beautiful exterior styling of the Jaguar cars. In 1948, engineers at the company also helped create a legend in the automotive world, as the all-new and highly advanced XK engine made its debut in the revered XK120 sports car. The XK remains to this day a key reference to the DNA of the company, with successive cars sporting the same dynamic driving experience, eye for detail, proportion and engineering reliability.

Other notable cars from Jaguar include the XK120/140/150 (1950s), the Mark ll and XJ6 (1960s), the XJ-S (1970s) and the XJ220 and XK8 (1990s). There are many other vehicles worthy of note that also represent key design innovations of their time – too many to be able to list them all here. A significant part of Jaguar’s reputation has been built on the skills of a remarkably talented series of entrepreneurs, engineers, drivers and designers, including: William Lyons who, as well as establishing the company, designed some of the most celebrated Jaguars, including the XK120, the Mark II and the XJ6. Knighted in 1956, Sir William worked until 1972. Norman Dewis, as Jaguar’s chief development test engineer, spent 36 years deciding how the company’s cars should feel to drive. The achievement he is proudest of is developing the disc brake with Dunlop, an innovation that has saved countless lives over the years.

Amongst the many significant vehicles in the collection, are examples of the original 1935 SS1 Airline and the 1937 SS Jaguar saloon. Motor sport is represented (amongst others) with the 1953 Jaguar C-type, two D-Types (1954 and 1956) and the unique XJ13 racecar. The collection also includes a number of examples of the E-type, perhaps the most iconic Jaguar of all time, which created such a huge sensation when it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961. The E-type went on to become an icon of the “Swinging 60s” on a par with the Beatles and the mini skirt. Subsequently it became the car of choice for celebrities of the time such as George Best, Brigitte Bardot, Steve McQueen and Tony Curtis; just as previous Jaguars had before... Jaguar’s current Design Director Ian Callum has said: “It is impossible to overstate the impact the E-type had when it was unveiled in 1961. Here was a car that encapsulated the spirit of the revolutionary era it came to symbolize. The E-type is a design that even today continues to inform the work we do in styling the Jaguars of the future.”

Bill Heynes was instrumental in developing the XK straightsix engine. He also played a key role in the design engineering of Jaguar’s Le Mans winners, the C-Type and D-Type, as well as the E-type. He was awarded the CBE in 1969, shortly before he retired from Jaguar. Malcolm Sayer was steeped in the principles of aerodynamics by the time he joined Jaguar in 1952. Sayer helped to shape Jaguar’s first Le Mans winner, the C-Type, and went on to design the iconic D-Type, XJ13 and Etype, with their beautiful and streamlined profiles. Sayer’s working methods involved plotting the co-ordinates of complex curves with slide rules and logarithmic tables and he also pioneered the use of wind tunnels to test a car’s aerodynamic properties. Sayer’s last car was the XJ-S though, sadly, he died in 1970, before it went into production Ian Callum, Jaguar’s current design director, has been acknowledged as one of the world's foremost automotive designers. A graduate of at the Royal College of Art’s Vehicle Design course he went on to work on projects at

31239 4pgs:Carford Group 06/08/2012 11:13 Page 3

Ford including the Ford RS200 mid-engined sports car and the Escort RS Cosworth. After a spell as design manager at the Ghia Design Studio in Turin, he returned to the UK to join TWR Group as chief designer. It was there that he revived Aston Martin’s famous DB series with the DB7 as well as creating the Vanquish and DB9. He joined Jaguar in 1999 where, as Design Director, he has led the design teams in the creation of a new design language for Jaguar that first appeared on the latest XK range and has subsequently re-established Jaguar's sports saloon credentials with the XF and the all new XJ. He has also been instrumental in creating the R-Coupe and RD-6 concept cars, as well as Jaguar's latest creations, the C-X75 electric concept car - unveiled to universal acclaim at the 2010 Paris Motor Show – and the exciting new F-TYPE sports car that is set to be the spiritual successor to the E-type.

In today’s highly competitive automotive market, Jaguar continues to go from strength to strength, representing the modern face of successful British design, engineering and manufacturing. Perhaps unsurprising as the company remains true to its key objectives of designing innovative and beautiful performance cars, just as William Lyons and his successors did back in the company’s former days. Obsessionistas would like to personally thank Ian Callum, Design Director of Jaguar, for helping us gain access to the company’s rich design archive collection. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Neil McPherson, Anders Clausager and particularly Karam Ram and Jonathan Partridge of the Jaguar Heritage Museum.

Safe summer driving with a Holiday Check Is your car ready for your summer holiday? With the economic climate still under a cloud, 55% of holidaymakers this year will be cutting costs by holidaying at home. However, very few motorists have considered the effect a breakdown could have on their staycation.

The 21-point Holiday Check includes:

According to research by the Good Garage Scheme, 58% of British holidaymakers will not have their cars checked before heading out on the road this summer, which means thousands of motorists could be putting their lives at risk by travelling in cars that are unfit and dangerous.

• Tyres and exhaust

• Air conditioning operation and cabin comfort • Fluid levels • Lights and wipers

Do you have your car checked at a garage before any motoring holidays?

42%

Yes No

58%

Total poll: 344

To help avoid a costly breakdown during a summer getaway, there are a number of checks you can make to ensure you don’t miss out on a great holiday because your car has let you down. So what do I do? •

Tyres – look after your tyres and they will look after you. Ensure correct pressure to cope with increased weight of luggage and passengers. Check treads are legal to keep a firm grip on the road – they are the link between you and the road!

•

Oil & Fluids – check, top up and change oil and coolant if needed to ensure a smooth running car and prevent engines overheating.

•

Washers and wipers – they can take a hammering over the winter so check and see if wiper blades need replacing.

•

Brakes – listen for excessive noise from brakes and have the discs and pads checked for excessive wear. Motorists can get used to driving with worn brakes without realising the danger. It’s essential to check them regularly.

•

Air conditioning – check for a bad smell such as a dirty sock smell that may indicate harmful mould and bacteria in the air conditioning ducts which can cause flu-like symptoms.

Still unsure about what to do? Proper preparation will give you the peace of mind that your car is in the best possible condition before you head off on your ‘staycation’. To enable drivers to have their cars checked before their holiday starts, the Good Garage Scheme has launched a comprehensive 21-point Holiday Check.

CAVENDISH MOTOR WORKSHOP IT’S 2012 and Land Rover specialist Cavendish Motor Workshop is stepping up a gear. The Derbyshire business is continuing its steady motor down the road of success by extending its expert services to Peugeot.

Consequently the ongoing training of technicians, ensuring they’re at the top of their game and have their fingers, quite literally in some cases, on the mechanical pulse, is given equal priority.

Owner Geoff Pheasant and his team of top technicians have been busily adding the marque’s own diagnostic equipment to their already extensive Land Rover range and are all set to go. It’s the latest venture for the company which has done nothing but gain in reputation and size, despite the harsh economic climate, since Geoff launched it in its current form in 2009. Until now it has been purely an independent Land Rover/Range Rover specialist, concentrating on high standards of service and repair throughout Chesterfield and the surrounding areas. It originally formed part of Cavendish Motors Limited but as that company’s owner approached retirement and looked to take a step back, Geoff, who was then head technician, bought out the workshop side of the business. In those days it was just himself at the wheel, so to speak, with one other technician and a part time receptionist answering the phones and taking bookings, but his brand of personal service, combined with high-quality repairs, diagnostics and servicing and competitive pricing, soon saw customer numbers shooting upwards.

And while they are proud to be Land Rover/Peugeot specialists, it’s typical of the all-round service from Geoff and his team, that such specialism is not exclusive. “Many Land Rover owners have a second vehicle and we were getting more and more enquiries to look at those vehicles, he says. “We will happily take most makes. With customers returning year on year and Geoff on first name terms with many, he has a solid foundation on which to move Cavendish Motor Workshop forward. “I am very excited about anything that expands the business, he says. “We have doubled our turnover but rarely do any advertising; our custom comes mostly through word of mouth. “We must just be good at what we do and do it at good prices.

And he never looked back. In a relatively short space of time Cavendish Motor Workshop had outgrown its premises and, having taken on more staff and to accommodate extra work, moved into its current home on the Storforth Lane Trading Estate, in Hasland, Chesterfield, last December.

Developing as Peugeot specialists is, Geoff says, a natural progression. “I was, at one time, a Peugeot mechanic and so were two of my technicians, he explains. “As a Land Rover specialist there’s only so far you can go to expand the company but the Peugeot option was right there in front of me. Bringing in the appropriate diagnostic equipment was an equally natural move for a company which, committed to only ever providing the very best and most up-to-date technology, makes serious investment in such things - Geoff reveals one particular Land Rover piece is updated on a weekly basis.

Despite facing a major challenge from cheap imports, particularly from Turkey and China, where price is more important than quality, Majorsell continues to thrive as the importance of reliability becomes recognised. Rebuilders may be tempted by cheap prices in the short term but soon find that using poor quality parts is far more costly in the long term. The emphasis Majorsell place on quality and reliability has developed the export side of their business, which now generates the majority of their turnover, and means that Majorsell is an internationally recognised brand name, synonymous with quality. They currently export to over 70 countries. This year, as part of their continued export drive, they are looking forward to exhibiting at Automechanika in Frankfurt in September for the 11th time.

There is a real buzz in the air at Majorsell who distribute airbrake equipment, for commercial vehicles, and specialise in compressor parts and repair kits. They are delighted with their move into a new 20,000 sq ft facility at Credenda Road, West Bromwich, which has come as part of a major expansion. The extra capacity has enabled them to carry a greater stock holding, take on extra staff, expand their workshop facilities and open a trade counter for the first time, enabling them to give an even better service to their West Midlands customers, within the transport industry. The new premises were officially opened by the Lady Mayor of Sandwell and former local footballer Cyrille Regis, who were very interested by a tour of the company’s distribution operation, reconditioning workshop and trade counter. Majorsell was founded in Coventry in 1981 primarily as a remanufacturer but is now a specialist supplier of aftermarket commercial vehicle airbrake parts and repair kits for a wide range of vehicle applications. Majorsell are particularly proud of their range of kits which they have developed over the years using their extensive knowledge and expertise. The range is constantly expanding and adapting as the company responds to customers’ requirements. They aim to ensure that the kits contain everything the rebuilder actually needs and are extensively tested within the company’s own workshops. Also in response to customers’ requirements, the company have developed a comprehensive range of caliper kits, filling a much needed gap in the market.

Deborah Burrows, Majorsell’s MD, attributes their ongoing success story to the dictum of “stick to what you know, do it well and offer good service, customers will remember that.

Jo Birkett and Calvin Hewitt from Lesters of Redditch, based in Lakeside, collected the trophy on behalf of the owner Vincent Smith, at the prestigious awards evening which was held this year at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

Now there’s an award to also demonstrate the company’s standards. “Given that the WNSA Approved Repairer Network deals with more than 225,000 repairs a year, the standards required to secure a place in the top 40 for our awards scheme are extremely high, said Dave Butler, WNSA vice-president, contracts. “All members are required to adhere to very stringent criteria, so to rise to the top of this elite group demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to delivering top-quality service. Lesters of Redditch is happy to provide free, no-obligation estimates and anyone wishing to drop in to its bodyshop looking for advice is welcome. Winning the award is, says a delighted Jo, a real honour for the independent family-owned business which, since it launched in 2002, has not only gained WNS approval but has also warranty approvals for Kia, Peugeot and Fiat. “We have received congratulations across the industry, she adds. “We all work very hard to ensure that excellent customer service is our top priority and it’s amazing to know that our hard work is recognised. “We've been attending the Bodyshop awards for the past three years and it’s always a wonderful night. wheelchair users while the drivers are fully licensed, each knowing Birmingham’s myriad and complicated road system like the back of his or her hand. As befits its name, ComCab uses the newest technology available to make every passenger’s experience the best, right from its cutting-edge booking and despatch system that allows the company to quickly allocate a booking to the closest available taxi, to the entire fleet fitted with GPS vehicle location systems. BEING number one in a service sector often means you have to work that much harder, not only to maintain that position but also to live up to the high standard of service your customers come to expect.

“We believe in investing in the business and have spent millions on ensuring we have the latest technology in our taxis and in our call centres, ensuring that the client has the most efficient taxi journey available, says Roy. “With a 24/7/365 call centre and an internet booking channel ComCab is available day and night while its UK presence means it operates in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Aberdeen and provides a service in more than 256 countries.

This is what drives ComCab Birmingham to provide the most reliable, professional taxi service in Birmingham – an award winning attention to detail all day, every day. It’s that dedication to making every passenger’s taxi ride the best that has led it to becoming the largest taxi company in not only Birmingham, but the UK. “We pride ourselves in delivering excellent customer service and we have structured the business to maintain our delivery standards and offer something no other taxi firm can: choice, quality, style, value and consistency, emphasises General Manager Roy Foxall. It’s ‘client is king’ approach has also helped it stand firm against the general havoc being experienced by the transport sector, reeling from the double whammy of rising fuel and rising insurance costs, and the added burden of touting from unlicensed and/or out of town operators. “Despite this unfavourable climate, ComCab job totals have grown by 38% compared to the corresponding period last year when most other taxi companies went backwards during the same period, reveals Roy. “Because of the rapidly increasing demand for our services, we recruited two new employees to extend our Birmingham call handling capacity and we anticipate this will need to be extended further as our rapid growth is expected to continue. In the fast-paced, modern world that is Britain’s Second City, taxis represent the quickest and most convenient option for travelling Computer Cab was established in 1974 and a part of the ComfortDelGro Corporation - the world’s second largest land transport group in the world - since 2007, ComCab Birmingham is the city’s premier licensed taxi operator, providing corporate account, cash and credit card facilities. Its large fleet of taxis, are available 24/7 and all fully licensed, with the fares regulated by Birmingham City Council. Each vehicle is purpose-built, with cabin seating for up to six passengers and the capacity to securely accommodate

More than 15,000 people a day trust ComCab to get them to their destinations safely and on time every day in the UK they’re not just hailing the company’s taxis, they’re hailing its success.

In A Truly Global Industry, A Real Birmingham Success Story. “When it came to establishing a new central hub for our freight and logistics operations, there really was no choice but to put it here in Birmingham‌â€? So says Gren Turner, Managing Director of Europa Worldwide Logistics, one of the few privately-owned freight and logistics companies in the UK, and a company that has gone from strength-to-strength since it first established a base of operations here in the Midlands over twenty-five years ago.

“I think our success is founded in our philosophy, Mr. Turner says. “Without industry and manufacturing there would be no reason for us to exist as a company, and so right from the start we have always operated on the basis that the customers’ needs are the only important thing. We have always worked towards this concept of being a company big enough to cope with any demand, yet small enough to treat every individual consignment as the only thing we are delivering that day. It’s a trust, and it’s a serious responsibility, but we have always approached it with a sense of passion and real commitment. We like to think that even though we can’t take every individual shipment personally, we nevertheless take each shipment very personally indeed. And so, with the unveiling of this new facility, Europa Worldwide Logistics continues to shine as a real Midlands success story, catering to every aspect of British, European and worldwide trade and commerce, providing cost-effective freight and logistics solutions for all industries. As a final word, Mr. Turner adds, “And despite our international partnerships and the vast global network of service providers we maintain, we will always and forever be proud to be a British firm, interested in the business of British manufacturers, interested in helping companies reach their market, no matter the size of their endeavours. That’s what it’s all about. Making business and manufacturing work the very best that it can.

If you are interested in receiving further information regarding the complete range of services that Europa Worldwide Logistics offers, please contact

Speaking from the new ÂŁ20m purpose-built facility in ProLogis Park at Minworth, Mr. Turner went on to say that, “Birmingham has always been at the real heart of British industry. All the way back to the 18th Century Birmingham was known as the first manufacturing town in the world. Everything from jewellery to Spitfires have been built here. This was the hub of the automotive industry, the home of the Lunar Society and the Industrial Revolution. The steam engine was invented here, along with gas lighting. I mean, Birmingham University Hospital saw the first ever hole-in-the-heart operation. Whichever way you look at it, Birmingham and the West Midlands really are the heart and soul of so much that has put British invention and manufacturing at the forefront of international trade and commerce.â€? So perhaps it is no surprise that in a city that boasts more miles of canal than Venice, canals that were built to take those very same West Midlands-manufactured products out to the rest of the world, we find this new state-of-the-art freight and logistics centre. Encompassing more than 155,000 square feet, built to the very highest ecological standards, and bringing more than one hundred jobs to the area, Europa Worldwide Logistics new Birmingham facility continues to cement the company’s reputation as a leader in its field. For nearly fifty years, Europa has been providing local, national and international manufacturers with cost-effective services – everything from 24 and 48-hour import and export routes to mainland Europe, UK warehousing and logistics, full international air and seafreight services, and a complete range of tailormade supply chain freight and logistics solutions for all industries. Covering everything from specialised delivery systems for major automotive manufacturers to government-certified and secure storage and distribution of lifesaving drugs and medicines, Europa continues to grow and expand despite recent global economic hardships.

THE latest guide aimed at making journeys for UK road transport operators through the EU and beyond as smooth as possible, is now available. The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has published the 17th edition of its annual European Road Transport Guide, packed with details such as toll prices and public holidays. Previously known as the International Road Transport Guide, it is now sporting a fresh title to avoid confusion with some of the association’s newer offerings which cover a larger geographical area than its mainly European road freight interests.

The latest edition’s details include refreshed information on public holidays, weekend lorry bans, toll prices and other essential facts for fleet operators in the own account and hire and reward sectors. The extensive list of countries has also been increased with Liechtenstein and Monaco now included in the guide - but they are not the only additions. Also new are:

C U S TOM E R SOLUTI ON S The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has published the 17th edition of its annual European Road

• Indicative ferry journey times. • More information on the UK Border Agency's haulier accreditation scheme. • A section to assist operators in retrieving a vehicle if it is impounded by UKBA officials. • Contacts in France for lorry ban exemption permits. • Information on HM Revenue & Customs’ treatment of freight moving to the Channel Islands. There have been numerous other detailed changes throughout the guide, notably affecting the Netherlands, Estonia and Poland, with some of the information provided by FTA members.

Transport Guide, packed with details such as toll prices and public holidays.

It has already proved a vital tool for transport managers; its country profiles equipping them with the crucial information they need to avoid delays and deal effectively with roadside enforcement.

The FTA is one of the UK’s largest trade associations and represents the transport interests of companies moving goods by road, rail, sea and air. Don Armour, the FTA's International Manager and editor of the guide, says that several aspects contained in the guide have relied on information passed on directly from the first-hand experience of FTA members when operating their vehicles abroad. With that membership responsible for more than 200,000 lorries alone, the guide’s information gathering potential is huge. But it has already proved a vital tool for transport managers; its country profiles equipping them with the crucial information they need to avoid delays and deal effectively with roadside enforcement. “As with any reference work, the details given may become out of date over time, so comments or amendments from those who are actually on the road play an important part in making sure that the guide is always as up-to-date and relevant as possible, says Don.

As well as the number of lorries its members operate - almost half the UK fleet - those represented by the association also deliver more than 90% of freight moved by rail; and 70% of UK visible exports by sea and air.

Companies in international membership of the FTA receive a free copy of the guide as part of their subscription package and they can buy further copies for ÂŁ35 each, no VAT. Non international members wishing to obtain a copy can purchase an issue at a cost of ÂŁ55 while those outside of the association can pick up a copy for ÂŁ75.00, with price reductions available for multiple copies. New Isuzu Truck Dealers in the Midlands Earlier this year leading commercial vehicle manufacturer Isuzu Truck announced the appointment of long-established commercial vehicle group Aquila Truck Centres, as its main dealers for the Midlands.

Aquila Truck Centres is one of the UK’s leading commercial vehicle dealership groups, supplying, maintaining and repairing fleets of trucks, coaches and specialist vehicles for over 400 customers. The companies range from small contractors through to some of the largest household names. The company employs in excess of 160 staff covering sales, service and parts, plus many of the other traditional range of commercial vehicle services. For example, the company operates an impressive paint shop at its Aldridge site whilst its Telford location carries out petroleum regulations conversions and has a Vosa Authorised Testing Facility. At the opening of the Isuzu franchise, Peter Jones, managing director of Aquila Truck Centres was proud to state, “With 24/7 facilities at all six of our depots, we are superbly placed to offer customers the full range of proven and reliable Isuzu trucks; the Isuzu brand fits well with the other marques that we offer. The Isuzu range will open new opportunities for us to assist companies in the Midlands that require lighter and smaller commercial vehicles.”

The business got off to a flying start with probably the quickest truck sale on record. In a breaking time of just 1 hour and 13 minutes from officially opening as an Isuzu truck dealer, the West Midlands based dealership successfully sealed its first sale. Wolverhampton company ND Brown placed an order for two Isuzu Forward N75.190 tipper trucks for its rental fleet.

In conjunction with the opening of the ITUK franchise, Aquila also appointed Garry Jones as its Isuzu Franchise Manager. He now heads up the Isuzu business operation from the Aquila Head office in Walsall. Garry is extremely well-known within the Midlands region, having worked for Aquila for a number of years in a variety of roles within sales and aftersales. His appointment will ensure that all customers can be offered comprehensive packages to suit their individual requirements.

Aquila Truck Centres handle the sales, service and parts for Isuzu Trucks from depots in Walsall, Tipton, Tamworth, Whitchurch, Telford and Worcester. This major appointment is part of Isuzu’s continuous programme of strategic dealer development within the UK.

Garry Jones can be contacted on 01922 715046 or on (07774) 193661. Full details of the new Aquila Midlands dealerships can be seen by viewing its website on

www.aquilatrucks.com Commenting, Richard Draycott sales director at Isuzu Truck UK said; “Aquila certainly got off to a flying start and I’m pleased that they’ve been able to maintain that momentum. The six Aquila Truck Centre locations, in and around the Midlands, are well placed to offer our existing and prospective customers the full range of our products and services. Both companies share the same passion for customer support and Isuzu’s award-winning CARE programme is complemented by Aquila’s own approach to customer service. ”

and to view the current Isuzu Truck UK product range visit the ITUK website www.isuzutruck.co.uk

To celebrate this new venture the Aquila Group will be inviting all of its current and prospective customers to a launch and extravaganza. This will be held at its Walsall site in Aldridge on the 7th and 8th of September 2012.

S.JONES CONTAINER SERVICES The S Jones business originated in Aldridge, Walsall and commenced operations in 1914. By 1999 the business had developed into quite a sizeable concern (as can be seen on the company history on the website) involved in road transport, truck distribution and operating a shipping container depot. However financial and strategic reasons led to a significant restructuring in 1999 when the company went through a receivership and consolidated to its container depot trading division.

Shipping containers are manufactured to very high standards for the transportation of goods throughout the world by land and sea and have a significant life expectancy. This integral strength enables the company to convert shipping containers to many alternative and varied uses, including bespoke enclosures for industrial equipment, generators and living accommodation which can be securely and easily transported within the UK or around the world. The combination of their design team (including 3D CAD modelling) and skilled metal fabricators ensure that their customers are guided through the design process and get the converted containers and enclosures they need. At the main site in Aldridge and at their West Bromwich depot the company operate self storage sites utilising shipping containers as storage units and operate under the name of U Can Store It. They have over 450 storage units in use varying in size from 37.5 sq ft to 300 sq ft, situated in entirely secure compounds. These are ideal for customers who need security and wish to have drive-to access to their storage unit door for up to 365 days a year. Customers can store most things, including business stock and equipment, archive stock and household goods during house moves or de-cluttering. At West Bromwich they also store over 100 caravans in a secure compound.

Originally the business of the new company, S Jones Container Services Ltd, was solely the storing and repairing of shipping containers for international shipping and container leasing company customers at its 11 acre depot in Aldridge. An activity which commenced in the 1970’s when containers were first introduced into the UK and which continues up to the present day. From this base, the company has expanded into four divisions, all with the recurring theme of shipping containers, serving customers throughout the UK. As a retailer and hirer of containers within the UK they have found that there is a great demand for sales and rental containers for storage use. An easy and quick solution for temporary or permanent storage is to use shipping containers; their secure and weatherproof structure makes them ideal for storage. You don’t have to travel far to see containers in use for secure storage on industrial and construction sites. S Jones Container Services has an excellent, information packed website www.sjonescontainers.co.uk, and a service biased sales team which can advise what container solution is best for their customers.

Their container depot business offers full container depot services to over 20 international container shipping lines and leasing companies. They continue to receive thousands of containers into their depot each year which are offloaded from delivering trucks, inspected, repaired, if necessary before storage, then the containers will be reloaded onto the customer’s transport when they are required.

Today the company is run by Andrew Jones, as Joint Managing Director, he is the 4th generation of the family since the business was started by his great-grandfather, Samuel Jones in 1914. Following the restructuring in 1999 the turnover of the company was less than ÂŁ1m pa; this has now increased to an annual turnover of ÂŁ5m with 40 employees. The company sees opportunities for growth in all its areas of activity, the enthusiasm and commitment of the owners and personnel ensures progress on all fronts. Their greatest recent business challenge has been meeting the demands of a significant increase in their business this year, and increasing their work force by over 20% in order to meet this challenge, something the company is very proud of. Joss Ollett is having the time of his life, since realising a long held ambition to own and run his own business.. Joss’s love affair with leather began after leaving university and landing his first job at The Souk, in Oxford Street, aged 21, managing thirty staff. It was a very busy bazaarstyle boutique, selling kaftans, sheepskin coats, leather goods, hippy sandals and jewellery. He says; “I was really lucky to gain experience in one of the world's top shopping streets, when it was a fun time!” Joss progressed through his retail career, gaining broad based business expertise, finally becoming Buying/Marketing Director of Lanca Group PLC. In 1991 he started designing his own leather ranges while visiting and buying in the Far East, India and Italy, and selling to clients like River Island, C & A, and Salisburys. He discovered the potential of the internet, and web shops, in 2002, and The Leather Briefcase Company was born. A real family business, Joss’s son Andy is a director, and Carol, Joss’s wife, also came on board. Joss says

B a y l i s s O r m e r o d & C o . L t d C e l e b r a t i n g 1 0 0 y e a r s . 100 years of UK wide innovative packaging solutions. The business was started in February 1912 by Herbert John Bayliss in partnership with Mr Ormerod at 18, Constitution Hill, Birmingham, next door to the Public Library. Within 6 months Mr Ormerod had decided that manufacturing packaging was not his chosen career, and Herbert Bayliss bought him out, still keeping the name of Bayliss Ormerod as the company was starting to become well known by this name. To start with deliveries were made by a man with a large wheelbarrow, then by a boy on a bicycle, and eventually with the increase in customers a van was bought and Herbert began to feel that he had “arrived” on the manufacturing scene in Birmingham. The advent of the First World War saw Herbert joining up and attaining the rank of Captain in the 1st Warwickshire Battalion. Meanwhile the business was being run by his mother Mary Bayliss and his sister Lillian Bayliss, an unusual situation in those days for a woman to run a business but as it turned out a most successful combination. Herbert Bayliss returned after the war to continue to build up the business, which, after several years, having outgrown the factory on Constitution Hill, was moved to a building near the railway bridge in Icknield Street. The Second World War intervened, and between keeping the factory still functioning with a depleted number of employees, due to the call up for war service, Herbert Bayliss himself doing war work as the Civil Defence Officer for the Birmingham North Area, which entailed being up most of the night visiting Civil Defence posts, and incidents caused by the bombing, and then working all day in the business, he managed to keep it going.

Herbert Bayliss died in 1960 The company soon needed larger premises and moved to its current buildings at 37-38, Icknield Street. Herbert’s daughter Barbara joined the company “to help out”, and is now the Managing Director, and her son, Edward and having qualified second in the country with a City and Guilds in Packaging, joined the company and started the foil blocking department. Various members of the 4th generation work in the factory during university vacations. The company prides itself on being a caring, efficient and “green” family business, going the extra mile for its customers and appreciating the loyalty and hard work of employees, some of whom are second generation employees with Bayliss Ormerod themselves. The four directors, David Cookson, Barbara Davis, Marc Groves, and Melanie Pearson look forward to the future and the next “100”.

After the war, Herbert saw the need to add further diversity to the, by then, Limited Company, and imported machines to make transparent boxes, lids and cartons, thus adding another large department. His two sons, Gordon and Stanley Bayliss who had served in the RAF during the war, joined the company at this point, and it continued to thrive.

Paperchasers LORNA Langdon’s company doesn’t just look good on paper, it’s good with paper too - and a whole lot more besides. That means it’s also good for the planet while its caring ethos is good news for the community. Based in Aston, Birmingham, Paperchasers Ltd is an awardwinning environmental social enterprise providing a commercial solution for waste reduction, reuse and recycling to offices, schools and businesses throughout Birmingham and beyond. The only thing this business puts into the ground are trees, for it supports the development of a community forest and plants and adopts new trees on clients’ behalf. “You can recycle your paper, card, cardboard, glass, cans, tins, foil, mixed plastic packaging - bottles, yoghurt pots, cups, carrier bags, film and wrap, Tetrapak cartons, printer/toner cartridges, waste electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, fluorescent lamps/tubes, food waste, furniture and wood,” Lorna rattles off a lengthy list.

Initially collecting and recycling only paper, it now handles 36 different materials and collects non-recyclable general wastes for disposal with energy recovery. It also supplies waste recycling bins and containers made from recycled materials and compostable scrap sacks which, along with kitchen waste caddies, are sold nationwide to domestic clients. With its sense of environmental responsibility comes a sense of social responsibility and Paperchasers sets out to provide volunteering opportunities for local unemployed people and for 16-18 year olds to gain valuable work experience.

“What can be reused in the community is reused; if it can’t it is recycled and if it can’t be recycled, it is sent for disposal with energy recovery. Nothing is ever land-filled, so there are never any landfill taxes! “We also offer secure shredding service so there’s no need to use several different contractors, one call to us, as a one-stopshop, will do it all. “We tailor our services to your specific requirements and pride ourselves on professionalism with a personal touch while being dedicated to excellent customer service and reliability.” Lorna spent 15 years pioneering the UK’s community waste sector but was made redundant in 2006. She spent the next year seeking suitable vacancies before spotting a gap in the market for a reliable, customer-focussed ethical recycling business. Paperchasers was the result and it quickly clinched the Midlands NES Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2007.

Careful monitoring means Lorna can supply impressive figures detailing how many tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfill; how many tonnes of carbon saved, or how many people helped into employment already but she’s now focussed on future numbers, such as ambitions to divert at least 500 tonnes of commercial waste to reuse and recycling, to gain ISO14001 accreditation, boost the client base, develop a Green Apprenticeship scheme and launch a customer loyalty scheme. She also wants to do something about the estimated 40% of SMEs with 10 or less employees who take waste home for recycling/disposing. “That is a breach of duty of care legislation and can result in fixed penalty notices of £300,” she warns. “Businesses can become legally compliant by using Paperchasers.” To see how the company, a participant of a national pilot project to trial new electronic duty of care systems for the Environment Agency, can help you,

visit www.paperchasers.biz. Here you’ll also find details of its recession-beating free collection and recycling service for office white paper and membership service for mixed paper/card starting at £10 pcm with instant discounts for members for confidential shredding and office clearances.

Gillgroup

Titan Plant Hire, launched in 2000, holds a multi-million pound fleet of construction plant and machinery to meet the requirements of the rail, civil engineering and building industries. It also manufactures concrete products and bags raw aggregates to the local building trade.

Raj Gill has many reasons to be proud of his business successes - but he did not regard himself as a true high flyer until the realisation of his boyhood dream. Recently added to the Gill Group of companies, all excelling in their own right, is Cello Aviation, an executive charter jet company based at Birmingham International Airport. With its own 46-seater Avro Business Jet, the company offers market leading VIP corporate transport; flying royalty, Blue Chip companies, football or motor racing teams, horse racing clients, celebrities, wedding parties or conference groups to anywhere in Europe.

Operating out of depots throughout central and southern England, Discount Builders Merchants has been providing trade and household customers with a vast range of competitivelypriced DIY and building products since 1995. In the last 10 years there’s been even more for builders and major contractors throughout the UK via Gill Aggregates, an independent supplier of sands, gravels, decorative and specialist products in bags small or large or loose loads. The newest addition to the group is Gulf Slip Form Paving, the Middle Eastern expansion of Civil Engineering, serving the principal markets of highways, commercial and housing infrastructure works, rail, reinforced concrete and airfield construction. The companies may operate on an individual basis but, consistent throughout, is the commitment to quality. “Our mission at Gill Group is to deliver excellence through uniting our diverse portfolio of business,” says Raj. And not even the tough economic climate is a barrier to progress - the company is currently working on a £4 million project at Guernsey Airport and there are plans to diversify further by opening a child-minding business. The man who once dreamt of owning his own aviation business as a boy hasn’t finished heading for the clouds yet.

For further information about the Gill Group Ltd, go to

www.gillgrouphouse.com For Raj, who dreamed of owning a private jet company as a small child, this venture is a massive achievement - and he’s no stranger to such things. He launched the business 25 years ago and, in that time, it has grown to achieve a consistent turnover of £40 million.

A bomb goes off in Afghanistan and soldiers use emergency first aid for the survivors. Space blankets keep the injured warm after the London tube bombing. Manchester United footballer, Antonio Valencia is stretchered off after receiving oxygen on the pitch for a horrendous broken leg which sickens all those players and supporters watching. So who provides all the lifesaving equipment necessary for soldiers at war, doctors in A&E and even for the stricken footballer on the pitch? They all need emergency medical supplies – and quickly – and they are provided swiftly and efficiently by SP Services, a remarkable Midlands based company which has grown into an extremely successful enterprise throughout the world.

‘If the Army urgently needs extra medical equipment – wherever they are – then I am on the end of a phone 24 hours a day to ensure they get it. It’s important to keep supplies flowing and the Armed Services and hospitals need emergency equipment constantly.’ Whether it’s first aid equipment for Premier League football clubs, everything from ice packs to defibrillators, orange bags seen being carried by medical staff on the pitch and all the basket stretchers to carry off any injured players – they all come from SP Services. Much of the medical equipment seen recently in use at the Spurs v Bolton match was supplied by Steve and his team. Hollywood also calls on the firm to provide equipment for disaster movies and SP has worked on the last four Bond movies providing first aid equipment for both the stunts and acting scenes.

But it’s not just the real life situations which they provide equipment for, soaps and other TV programs also benefit. The Coronation Street tram crash, a scene from Casualty, or to answer the same day demand for 50 blankets for Channel 4’s Big Brother – all are catered for by SP Services. As Coronation Street celebrated its half century with the aftermath of the ultimate tram crash, ambulance crews were seen treating four badly injured characters – using everything from stretchers and Molly Dobbs’ neck brace to paramedic outfits and plasters, all provided by SP Services. These dramatic scenes have to appear realistic. So whether it’s real life or soap TV – the medical and emergency rescue equipment is from the Shropshire based supplier, a business run by managing director Steve Bray and his son Dan. Steve started the company 23 years ago. ‘I am passionate about getting the best equipment to wherever in the world it is needed. We have medically trained staff here who test out all the latest equipment before we use it to ensure it’s of the best quality,’ said Steve, who takes pride in knowing that SP provides the best equipment in the world.

freemantechnology Supporting manufacturing industry’s continuing drive for efficient powder processing

Experience and expertise

Organisations around the world who process powdered materials turn to Tewkesbury-based Freeman Technology for the equipment and know-how that helps them design, manage and improve their manufacturing efficiency. One measure of Freeman Technology’s success in world markets is a doubling of the company’s export sales in the past three years, an achievement that has been recognised with this year’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of International Trade.

“Our first Queen’s Award in 2007 celebrated the development of the FT4 and its contribution to supporting manufacturing industry,” continued Tim Freeman. “Five years on, not only do we have a proven instrument, we have unparalleled experience, expertise and applications knowledge that supports the use of the system. It is this combination that is proving so powerful and is driving our international growth.”

World player, local employer In September 2011, Freeman Technology relocated to large, modern premises in Tewkesbury having outgrown its original site in Welland, Worcestershire. Managing Director Tim Freeman is proud not only of the company’s success in world markets, but also of the company’s role as an employer in the region and the part it plays in the local economy. “We need a wide variety of skills within our organisation and are always keen to recruit and develop talented individuals,” he said. “All manufacturing and commercial operations, as well as our central support services, are housed at our Tewkesbury headquarters. Consequently we have on site engineers, researchers, manufacturing personnel and application scientists, together with sales and support teams and all the administration services necessary for the smooth running of an international business.”

Powders are part of many manufacturing processes

Since the launch of the FT4 eight years ago, Freeman Technology has supported sales directly in Europe and the US, and through distribution partners in Japan. This past year has seen the opening of a new direct operation in North America and the extension of distribution partnerships to include China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Tim Freeman sees “exciting times ahead as we continue to open up new markets”.

Why powders are important Powders are part of more manufacturing processes than most people imagine, from medicines, cosmetics and foodstuffs through to paints, printing inks, coatings, abrasives and building materials. Freeman Technology manufactures and markets instruments that measure how powders flow – or don’t flow! – under different conditions. The company’s FT4 Powder Rheometer helps manufacturers understand why powders behave the way they do, guiding efforts to design more efficient and streamlined manufacturing processes that work with a powder rather than against it.

IT takes a special kind of company to turn one of the worst recessions in living memory to its advantage, but then Sassen Engineering is a VERY special kind of company. Managing director and founder John Reddish is in no doubt that the years 2008/9 marked the greatest business challenge of Sassen’s 30+year history. But, he points out, its greatest success has been not only surviving that harsh climate, it’s emerged from those days as a stronger company, one that’s competing successfully in a tough industry and enjoying an ever-upward trend. It’s not surprising, therefore, that there’s excitement about the future of this manufacturer of CNC turned parts. “We hope to continue moving the business forward and to add to our plant list by buying another new CNC machine later this year,” reveals John. “We will then have the best up-to-date technology to maintain our competitiveness in the manufacturing market. “This new technology has resulted in taking on a mature 26 year-old apprentice, who goes to college two days per week and we are now beginning to see the benefits as he can programme and set a range of machines already.”

Quality is, indeed king here, with the top-of-the-range production programmes being operated as standard policy whether it is for volume or short-run production. “Our quality programme includes techniques fully tested and approved to ISO/UKAS UK Quality Management standards,” John states. No job, large or small is turned away by Sassen Engineering, thanks to its extensive plant list which includes vertical machining centres, Emco, Citizen and Cincinatti lathes and the latest CNC machining equipment. It also means that the parts, be they turned or machined parts, can be handled with efficiency and always at competitive prices. “We manufacture parts up to 65mm diameter in all metals, including stainless steel, brass, mild steel, copper and aluminium for the automotive, gas, aerospace, electrical, farming, lighting, commercial vehicle and railway industries plus many more,” says John.

Located in modern factory premises in Aston Road North, Waterlinks, Birmingham, Sassen Engineering was established by John in 1985 and quickly became a leading precision engineering organisation, manufacturing quality repetition turned parts and acquiring three more companies through mergers in the intervening decades. “We employ the most efficient machining techniques on a range of manual and fully automated CNC lathes for both large and small quantities and we have a highly-skilled workforce, all of which are fully trained to industry standards,” says John. “Furthermore, our CNC machining production methods are under continual review to ensure that clients are always 100% satisfied with our services and that our turned parts and machine parts are of the highest quality.”

Then came the ‘90s and the loss of that big customer but Julian says: “This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it provided an extra impetus for us to seek new and varied markets. “We expanded into many different product areas and are now at the forefront of support for manufacturing industry with electronic drives and power transmission products, providing a service to all organisations where rotating electrical equipment and drives are used.” Yet it’s not all about providing power; as green issues remain uppermost in many minds, Webb-Elec is leading the way on energy saving, supplying increasing amounts of inverter drives for pump and fan applications.

MOST companies would probably describe the loss of their biggest customer as catastrophic - typically Webb-Elec hails it as a blessing in disguise and opportunity for further growth. The body blow actually happened in 1992 but it gave the electric motor repairer and geared motors supplier the chance to demonstrate the spark that has sustained it for more than 100 years. 2012 sees Webb-Elec not only surviving the harshest recession in decades, it’s in a healthy condition thanks to a steady head and careful financial planning, while its customer base has diversified; supporting and supplying traditional Midlands manufacturers as well as local government, food processing, hospitals, printing, leisure and materials handling. It’s also planning to further expand its already very successful area of supplying energy-saving inverter drives, geared motors and pumps with its dedicated application engineering department and to continue to develop the quality and expertise of employees across the company.

“In almost every case, companies with pumps and fans can slow them down a small amount without any problems,” advises Julian. “A 20% speed reduction will yield a 50% reduction in electricity consumption. “We can guide you through this, providing projected savings. In most cases with the current cost of electricity, the inverter will pay for itself within a year with those savings repeated every year thereafter. “Companies are often astounded at the savings they make once they come on board.” Experiencing success in the energy-saving sector alone, WebbElec is poised for even better things in 2012, where Julian is predicting growth by holding true to its core values of quality, attention to detail and customer service. “Being an engineering support company we’re a very good barometer of the state of the local economy and I’m fully confident in the UK’s manufacturing recovery and return to prosperity,” he says.

For further information about Webb-Elec and its services, visit www.webb-elec.co.uk Alternatively telephone 0121 526 5070 Based in Willenhall, Webb-Elec is a key supplier and support company for West Midlands businesses and beyond, supplying and repairing a host of industrial equipment such as electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, fans, inverters and allied equipment while stocking and supplying electric motors, inverters, geared motor units and pumps. It was established by chairman Colin Webb in 1984 but its roots go back to 1895 when his grandfather Henry John Webb started what’s thought to be the Midlands first electrical repair company. Colin started his own business in the sector that he and his fellow directors had many years of experience in; electric motor repairs, and from the mid ‘80s business steadily expanded. When, after a few years, his son Julian became MD, the company diversified, adding pump, fan, gearbox and electronic repairs and providing an emergency 24-hour service.

way, in cast iron, for the North Downs Way National Trail. Using a design from competition winner Alma Tischler Wood, 3D worked with Vanguard Foundry to produce the design, which presented a number of challenges, particularly its size, the overall diameter was to be approximately 1.2 metres!”

Offering a great mix of experience, modern high end tooling design technology, 3D Tooling Technologies Ltd, has found a winning formula. We featured the steady growth of 3D Tooling in our magazine last year, and since then, we are pleased to report that the company has continued to build in on its solid customer base and has recently made a major investment in a new larger CNC vertical milling machine, from America. This is the first time that the company has bought such a large piece of equipment, brand new, “straight out of the box” and demonstrates their confidence in their future.

One of their great strengths is their adaptability; the combination of experience, expertise and the best equipment for the job means that 3D will rise to almost any challenge. Paul says “We have the same capabilities as companies many times our size but without the large scale overheads associated with them, meaning that we can produce top quality, accurate tooling at a very competitive price. One of our main advantages is that we use the Pro-Engineer solid modelling software, which is very high end software. The initial and ongoing outlay puts off many small companies as it is extremely costly, from the high cost of purchase and installation, ongoing fees to renew the annual licence, and the cost of training, and then remunerating the skilled worker. However, due to the amount of use we make of the system over the years it has become affordable.”

For further information on the company’s range of services visit www.3dtooltech.com Paul Reeves, founder and co – director, is very excited by the increased capacity the new machine gives, not only faster throughput, but the ability to process larger items, thanks to the 1.6m x 1.1m envelope of machining. Paul is delighted by the company’s success, their order books are looking very healthy and they receive a steady stream of enquiries. 3D already has an impressive client portfolio and is rapidly becoming known for its work for several high-end companies undertaking projects as diverse as tooling design, and manufacture for racing and development engines, classic car engines, aerospace fixtures and components for large earthmoving machines.

WEST MERCIA SECTIONS LIMITED It may be a specialist in the production of cold rolled steel products but West Mercia Sections Ltd is hot stuff as far as its customers are concerned. Businesses representing the very best in the construction, security and electrical industries are all choosing the company which is based in Tipton, in the heart of the industrial West Midlands.

While there’s no doubting the specialism and expertise in the field of rolled shutter doors, West Mercia Section has a lifetime of experience in the production of rolled cold steel products and is confident it can satisfy any requirement, be it for a stock item or a customised one. “Our factories are equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, capable of producing the very highest quality products,” assures managing director Robert Tuckey. From its site incorporating three factory units, in Nicholls Road, Princes End, the 14-strong team at West Mercia Sections Ltd also provides: • • • • •

Mezzanine floor and roof beams. Electrical trunking and lids Reinforcing sections for PVC windows. Structural beams. Roofing sections.

Flexibility and a willingness to go all the way to meet customer requirements are a feature of all these ranges - not least with the company’s mezzanine floor and roof beams which are high quality, high yield rolled steel beams, manufactured in galvanised material to BS EN 10147:1992. As far as the shutter door industry is concerned the question of who to go to is - well - an open and shut case.

They come in a choice of three sections, either supplied directly to site, cut to length or pre-punched with round elongated holes and notched to a client’s drawings.

West Mercia Section is one of the country’s major producers of precision engineered components for the manufacture of roller shutter doors, from standard laths and guide channels to angles, barrel casings and core bars.

“These inward turned, lipped channel section beams are strong, dependable and straight and provide the ideal foundation for sound mezzanine flooring and for industrial and commercial roofing,” Robert points out.

“All are produced from cold rolled steel sections and can be supplied cut to order to accommodate any type or size of door,” says Robert.

“There is also a range of accessories available, manufactured to the same specification and high quality.” That same high quality is reflected in West Mercia Section’s range of reinforcing sections used in the manufacture of PVC-U window and patio door frames. “We have been supplying local and national manufacturers for more than 30 years and have built a reputation for a fast and reliable service,” says Robert. “The sections are manufactured to the highest tolerances and quality and can be supplied in standard lengths or cut to size according to requirement.”

For a comprehensive guide to the products and services offered by West Mercia Sections Ltd, visit www.westmerciasections.com or to discuss your requirements call 0121 557 9927

“They can also be galvanised or colour coated in a variety of BS or RAL colours and laths are available in Plastisol coated finish while we have galvanised curly shutter laths in solid form or 'eyeball’ perforated and brickbond punched.” For those wanting conventional roller shutter doors with the extra benefits of thermal and acoustic insulation, West Mercia Sections offers the insulated Supalath range in two sizes and, again a variety of finishes and colour.

Armadillo Merino® specialises in next-to-skin protective clothing that utilises the natural benefits of superfine merino wool, to create innovative knit fabrics outstanding in protection, performance and comfort. WHEN Team GB goes for gold this summer, Andrea Miles will be reflecting on the vital role her company Mirrors for Training played in the bid for Olympic glory. Many of the Games’s dressage competitors, led by Richard Waygood, the team’s Chef d'Equipe, have been using the arena mirrors manufactured by the Wolverhampton business to hone their spectacular skills to championship levels. But Mirrors for Training isn’t just helping the nation’s top riders become world-beaters - it’s keeping dancers on their toes, golfers in the swing, gyms fit for the best and beauty salons looking good across the UK and beyond. Launched just five years ago, Mirrors for Training is a shining example of business success. “I started as a single mum from home and the business and its reputation have totally exceeded my expectations,” declares Andrea. “I had to move premises three times because I outgrew them.” Based on the Calibre Industrial Estate, the company specialises in the manufacture, and installation of commercial mirrors to a wide range of premises, including dance and performing arts centres, home gyms, schools, councils, hotels, shops, showrooms, museum, restaurants, salons and equestrian arenas. The big hit, especially with performing arts and theatre companies, has been portable mirrors. a solution to when fixed mirrors are an impossibility.

“The slightest imperfection can cost valuable points and, strategically-placed mirrors in the arena are a valuable asset, enabling riders to perfect their posture and performance and earn higher marks for accuracy,” explains Andrea. “They can help monitor the horse's movements and make training sessions more effective, even when the instructor isn't there. “They mean the rider can see what the judge sees so he or she can correct what they need to, when they need to, and the more time spent riding correctly, the easier it is to repeat in the competition arena.” Proud of its ability to bring a touch of glass to any project, Mirrors for Training is planning to build on its sparkling success by increasing its presence in Europe and is happy to tackle any requirement. “We don’t shy away from unusual requests,” promises Andrea. “We have supplied mirror mazes to a number of UK theme parks, two-way mirrors for theatre productions, and a 20ft cubed mirror room for in a pop video. “We have proven adaptability and flexibility and are passionate about supplying superior quality products at realistic prices, while offering a clear and honest service.”

Imagine a dance studio without a mirror. Such a fixture is probably the most important thing any must have to be able to dance, learn, teach and improve routines. The same goes for mirrors in a gym, which allow members to view their reflection, inspect their exercise form, and determine whether they're progressing with their workout program, consequently proving a valuable motivational tool. But it’s the company’s all-weather arena mirrors, uniquely-designed backed and framed galvanised steel so they’re strong and built to last, that have been doing their bit for the country’s Olympic dressage effort.

BIRMINGHAM RUNNER Huge range of running shoes & clothing

Keeping Midlands athletes on their toes for nearly 30 years, The Birmingham Runners Shop specialises in all things to do with running. Dave Ireland, took over the well established business (1983,) previously based at Robin Hood Island, in 1996. He is a former PE Teacher and rugby player with Leicester Tigers and has always been a keen runner, competing with Peterborough AC in the 70s, Wye Valley Road Runners early 80s and since 1985 has been a member of Sparkhill Harriers in Birmingham. Dave has a PB of 2hours 45min for the marathon.

Dave explained: “Keeping abreast of all the latest advances in sports shoe technology has been quite challenging, but oddly enough, the designs of some of the latest models resulting in minimalist or barefoot running has brought running back to its natural format harking back to days of “Man the Hunter”. Dave is building up the email ordering side of the business, so that he is able to service customers from a wider area, both nationally and internationally. He tells us that thanks to their wide range, this on-line side of the business has really taken off.

BIRMINGHAM RUNNER

64 Stratford Road, Birmingham B90 3LP Dave has always been actively involved in sports and leisure activities, even running a travel company specialising in skiing holidays for a time. Running and Athletics has always been his first love, however, so when the opportunity arose to buy The Birmingham Runner, he jumped at it. Since then the business has consistently led the way in the provision of professional specialist advice and running equipment to Midlands’ athletes and fun runners. As the business started to grow Dave looked around for larger premises, and in 2006 he bought the present premises, which has customer parking at the front of the store, and is just a little way further down Stratford Road.

EXCELLENT RUNS THROUGH BIRMINGHAM

The shop is open all week, including Sundays when the opening hours are 10.30 – 4 pm only. The friendly team are all keen athletes and really enjoy helping people to make the right choice of shoes and other kit. Running is an increasingly popular method of keeping fit, but for the beginner there are a lot factors to take into account. Simply donning your old tennis shoes and heading off for the first time is likely to result in sore feet, aching muscles and the abandonment of your new fitness programme before it has even got off the starting block. Professional advice and the right shoes are the essentials to get your regime off to a good start. Discuss with staff at The Birmingham Runner your levels of fitness and what you are hoping to achieve, they will assess your gait with their excellent Video Gait Analysis Service which is FREE when purchasing some running shoes. They have a huge stock holding so you will always find what you need, from their collection of men’s and women’s running trainers, cross country running spikes, and middle distance and track and field spikes.

the D E N T A L S P A * THEY care about much more than your smile at The Dental Spa - your skin and well-being are top priorities too. It’s this pioneering, bespoke and holistic approach to health and image solutions that has led to the Shrewsbury private dental practice and skin clinic to break further new ground. In January it became the first Shropshire establishment to offer revolutionary scarring treatment for skin damaged by acne, sun and premature aging. Staff, led by nurse practitioner Wendy Hartwig, travelled to London for specialist training in the revolutionary Obagi Nu-Derm treatment which, involving prescription products, can only be delivered in specialist clinics by qualified nurse prescribers or GPs. Already, they are reporting excellent results for the innovative procedure which aims to even out imperfections on the surface of the skin, balance its tone and revitalise sallow, lax and dehydrated skin. “The treatment is clinically proven to give good results and we are proud to be the only skin clinic in the county to offer it, says Wendy. “We offer a free initial consultation to determine a patient’s suitability for the treatment which includes a digital complexion analysis that also shows potential future problems such as hidden sun damage.

“If the patient is suitable and wishes to go ahead he or she will receive carefully chosen applications, including two at prescription strength, which they must use twice a day for up to four months. Regular consultations will be provided during this time. Such careful monitoring is not confined to this treatment - every procedure carried out at the Dental Spa, be it oral or dermalogical, is subject to the same caring professional scrutiny, delivered by a well trained and dedicated team. Based in Darwin Court on Oxon Business Park, it was established in 2003 to make the patient experience truly 21st century in terms of clinical excellence, environment and customer care. It’s certainly been just what the doctor - or dentist - ordered, having grown dramatically in that time, doubling the skin clinic revenue alone in 2010.

“From your initial enquiry, through your consultation and care, we focus on designing a bespoke experience that works for you, explains clinical director Dr Roy Dixon. “You will be warmly welcomed by a patient advisor who will ensure you are well looked after. Everything we do is designed for you and all our services are delivered by qualified, experienced professionals, who are outstanding in their field. Those services, featuring state-of-the-art facilities designed with comfort and safety in mind, include implants, orthodontics, general and cosmetic dentistry, chemical peels, minor surgery, vaccines, laser hair and tattoo removal skin rejuvenation, facial aesthetics and Visia Skin Analysis. “All treatments are clinically justified, appropriate and carried out with regard for your dignity and comfort, emphasises Dr Dixon. “We have comfortable and stylish relaxation areas, complete with entertainment, complimentary refreshments, on-site parking and are easily accessible via public transport.

There is great excitement at Dove Spa, a company committed to providing products and treatments that deliver genuine improvements to the condition of the skin, as they unveil their latest innovative product, Strength Within. Strength Within is like a “magic pill”, a fabulous new AntiWrinkle supplement, which is clinically proven to reduce lines and wrinkles, helping skin to look and feel firmer. As we age our skin gradually loses its ability to regenerate naturally and produces less collagen. This reduction in collagen starts in our mid-30s and it can drop by up to 40% between the ages of 35 and 55, leading to a loss of firmness and the formation of wrinkles. Strength Within was developed after more than 5 years of clinical research by a team of leading scientists, dermatologists and nutritionists and is clinically proven to reduce lines and wrinkles, showing greatest efficacy on deeper wrinkles. The supplement is formulated with Isoflavones extracted from natural Soy beans, together with Lycopene, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and nourishing Omega 3 fatty acids to support natural formation of collagen in the skin. In case you needed an excuse to visit, during August not only will Dove Spa be offering 10% off when you book a course of waxing, but the newest long lasting Shellac manicures will be just £15.

To combat the signs of ageing from both inside and out, combine Strength Within with Dove Spa skin care and facial treatments, specifically recommended by one of their superbly qualified therapists. From the moment you step into one of their 20 spas, locally, at Merry Hill, West Hagley or Streetly, you will be struck by the relaxing, welcoming environment and the professionalism of the team. Their therapists deliver Real Beauty from Real Care, are passionate about delivering honest and professional advice and work with you to help with your personal beauty needs.

The country is preparing itself for the biggest-ever consumer spend - £750 million - thanks to forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. Visa, responsible for the number-crunching, says the record-breaking boost will deliver a sustained stimulus worth a total of £5.1 billion to the UK economy by 2015. But you don’t need to look ahead to gauge the effect of such massive events - the benefits are being felt now as the venues and athletes’ accommodation are built, the transport infrastructure is put into place and all the marketing, sponsorship opportunities made available. Not to mention hospitality, accommodation, catering and all the sectors associated with accommodating the millions of visitors destined to descend on the capital, while around the country thousands hold their own Olympicthemed events and attractions. Equally, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is having a similar impact, with touring celebratory exhibitions, such as the Leonardo da Vinci drawings, attracting huge crowds wherever they visit. There’s no doubt these milestone events are providing a pivotal impact across the nation, bringing welcome cheer to what’s been a pretty depressed psyche for the last few years and, even more importantly, a massive boost to businesses across the board during challenging times. But you don’t need an event - or attraction - on an Olympian scale to benefit to an area as the small Welsh town of St Anspah knows. A recent report in the Rhyl Journal revealed that although 120 coaches a month passed through the cathedral town to visit a nearby shopping outlet – hardly a traditional ‘tourist attraction’ few stopped. The paper was reporting on a meeting in which the community discussed ways to encourage them to do so, such as studying how to improve the infrastructure linking the two areas, partnerships between businesses and investigating the construction of a visitor centre and toilets at the cathedral. Having a major attraction or event taking place on your doorstep isn’t, then, just about good times for the local leisure industry. It can mean employment for thousands, especially if it is developed in a part of the country with limited job opportunities which, again, has the ripple effect of bringing further economic benefits and can be used to further public policy in urban regeneration and rural development. As a whole, the tourism and leisure sector undoubtedly employs high numbers and

encourages people to spend money, but it also contributes to an attractive environment, raises a region's international profile and attracts international investment. Take Stratford-upon-Avon, which exists as it is, pretty much, because a famous Elizabethan playwright was born there. If any place understands the beneficial effects of visitor attractions or events it’s this one but even Stratford was surprised when then Dr Who, David Tenant arrived to play Hamlet at the town’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It experienced a mini tourist boom, with thousands arriving specifically to see the actor on stage but then staying a day or more, with the resulting increased business attributed directly to ‘The David Tenant Effect’. Heritage affects the visitor economy still further, with museums, flagship libraries and archives playing a central role while historic and civic buildings, their collections, and the services they offer are fundamental to the lives of the surrounding communities and a key part of the tourism industry. Warwickshire’s Stoneleigh Manor, for example, has 800 years of rich history for the heritage visitor to explore but is also a vibrant business hub, hosting corporate events, weddings, and conferences, all of which have a significant impact on the local economy.

C U S TOM E R SOLUTI ON S The country is preparing itself for the biggest-ever consumer spend thanks to forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The benefits are being felt now as the venues and athletes’ accommodation are built, the transport infrastructure is put into place and all the marketing, sponsorship opportunities made available, not to mention hospitality, accommodation and catering.

It’s places such as these, that are drawing in millions of visitors throughout the country, driving economic recovery in places that have not traditionally been tourist destinations and helping to restore local pride and identity. Examples of this effect don’t come much bigger than the Eden Project in Cornwall. In 1995 it was a working china pit nearing the end of its economic life. Since it opened in 2001 what is effectively the world’s largest greenhouse has bought in well over £900 million to the local economy and sustained around 3,000 jobs.

VI SI T www.living-places.org.uk www.tourist-information-uk.com

These benefits are also felt by its 2,500 local suppliers and a range of other businesses such as hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, pubs and taxis. The attraction attributes much of its success to its close working relationships with the community, as well as with the tourism industry and cultural agencies. On the Living Places website, a report on understanding the local economic impact of the Eden project remarks: ‘No organisation works in isolation, we are all inextricably linked.” It’s a statement that holds true for any attraction or big event.

Restaurant

Review

The

Wagon Wheel

The most fun any of us have had in a restaurant for quite some time! When four of us visited the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Grimley, we received a cordial welcome and settled in the comfortable bar with our drinks to make our menu selection. While we chose I sipped a glass of a pleasant house red while my son enjoyed half a pint of Golden Sheep.

For mains Katie had Duck Breast served with Orange Sauce, beautifully presented, with slices of fresh orange arranged on the perfectly cooked breast. Julie explained to us that they first roast the duck, which gives a better texture and flavour before finishing the dish in the sauce. I went for a veal dish cooked in a cream and Marsala sauce, I am always very particular with veal, ensuring that it is been responsibly reared, but Mr Juliano was able to reassure me and I enjoyed my, admittedly calorie laden, choice with a clear conscience. Two of our party chose steaks, Andrew went for Steak au Poivre, perfectly seasoned, cooked on a burner in its own rich sauce, which Andrew said was one of the best steaks he had ever tasted. Jenny chose Steak Diane, served in a sauce of mustard, onions and mushrooms flamed in brandy and red wine, and although she is usually a light eater, cleared her plate. A choice of fresh vegetables, broccoli, new potatoes, cauliflower in sauce, potato croquettes and slices of aubergine, deep fried in a light, tempura style batter was served to us at the table. When Andrew declined all except the potatoes Mr Juliano brought a dish of green peas for him. All the way through the meal the service was outstanding, having our meals cooked to our taste, by Mr Juliano over the burners, with a stream of cheerful banter was great fun and the meal really was exceptional, we all enjoyed every mouthful. The dessert trolley is like a huge silver cake stand, tiers of gorgeous goodies. Jenny’s slice of Banofee Pie was light and delicious, Katie’s profiteroles had a generous serving of chocolate sauce, and the coating for my creme brulee was added and flamed there and then, cooling to a satisfying crispy crust. Andy enjoyed some ripe Stilton, preferring to eat it with Melba toast, which was served earlier.

In addition to the extensive main menu featuring favourite dishes for which regulars return again and again, there is always a selection “specials”, featuring fresh seasonal produce. I started with Smoked Chicken Breast served with a sweet chilli dressing on a bed of leaves, light and delicious, the chicken smoked to perfection. Two of our party went for deep fried soft cheese with port and redcurrant sauce, so good that they are both still drooling over it a week later. Katie in an adventurous spirit went for Thai chicken cakes, an unusual twist on a classic recipe.

I earnestly recommend The Wagon Wheel, we had a great evening.

LOCATED in the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution that truly put the great into Britain, the BEST WESTERN Valley Hotel is about to undergo a small revolution of its own. In the way that Abraham Darby’s foundry perfected the technique of smelting iron more cheaply and quickly with coke, taking the country into a whole new age, the hotel’s recently approved plans for 27 bedrooms, extended restaurant, and new reception area, likewise, herald an exciting future. But then this stunning AA three-star Georgian listed country house hotel, part of the World Heritage site, has always had innovation and forward thinking at the heart of its development - along with highclass facilities, service and comfort. It was just a five-room pub when Philip and Lesley Casson took it on in1988 - a long way from the 44-room establishment with full conference and banqueting facilities that it is today. That’s not to mention the award-winning restaurant which has also consolidated its excellent reputation for food and service. Under head chef, Barry Workman, Chez Maw Restaurant has maintained two AA rosettes for the past 12 consecutive years and is a popular dining choice for residents and non residents. The hotel is also first choice for many happy couples. Ironbridge Gorge provides a magnificent backdrop for outdoor photography while the exclusive surroundings are perfect for indoor occasions, along with the bespoke service, wonderful food, superb facilities and competitive pricing structure. In fact it’s such a popular wedding venue, last year the hotel introduced an outside wedding gazebo and now fully expects to handle even more than the previous nigh-on 100 ceremonies a year.

That is evident in the hotel’s lengthy awards list. Apart from 12 years of two AA rosettes status, its plaudits include: Best Western GB Hotel of the Year 2008, joining the Green Tourism Business Scheme in 2009 and immediately achieving Gold standard which was retained further in 2011 and being named Shropshire Chamber of Commerce’s Best Green Business in 2010. “We have built and developed a dedicated team of individuals who have all contributed to these awards and to our reputation for exquisite fine food and attentive service, says Joanne. “Ironbridge and it’s attractions bring a huge amount of visitors to the Gorge every year. We accommodate many of those staying for a short break in Ironbridge, while the Telford location, 10 minutes from the M54 ensures corporate travellers can also find a home from home here. For the Best Western Valley Hotel, then, like the age which followed Abraham Darby’s innovations, it’s full steam ahead.

With progress now being made on the design and workings for the newly approved bedrooms and restaurant project, there’s plenty for the Cassons and their team to anticipate. Having already survived a number of recessions during their 24 years at the Valley Hotel, they’re ready to face, full-on, any challenges which lie ahead. “Our continual investment in the product, the team members, and our passion for growth and developing the business has been successful in attracting and satisfying customers across all market sectors, from corporate and conference to leisure and weddings, says the hotel’s general manager and director Joanne Boddison. “We have a long standing management team in place who bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and commitment, resulting in consistently high standards of service and customer care throughout.

FABULOUS wedding venues and award-winning restaurants and brasseries - just two of many reasons the Eden Collection of hotels are so sought after. Excellent conferencing and meeting facilities also add to the renown of these seven establishments, privately owned by Sir Peter Rigby and located in Devon, the Cotswolds, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Somerset. Each situated in stunning locations, all uphold the impeccable standards of service, quality and attention to detail which have become associated with the Eden Hotel Collection. The combination of these factors, and many more, such as their individual nature and the attention which comes from a personal ownership and a group of highly capable, dedicated professionals who care about their product, service and performance, have resulted in a powerful formula for success which, as 2012 unfolds, is destined to continue. Managing Director Mark Chambers commented: “We have seen huge expansion in 2011/12 and are now working hard to bring our new acquisitions up to the highest standards of the rest of the collection. Investment has been, and will continue to be, key for our group. “We are undergoing a multi million refurbishment at one of our new properties, Brockencote Hall Hotel in Worcestershire, and have plans for major investment at several others in the coming months.”

The Eden Hotel Collection comprises: Mallory Court, at Leamington Spa, The Kings Hotel, Chipping Campden, Buckland Tout-Saints, Kingsbridge in Devon, The Arden Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon, Brockencote Hall, Chaddesley Corbett in Worcestershire, The Greenway Hotel & Spa, near Cheltenham and The Mount Somerset Hotel & Spa. All are set in beautiful grounds making them ideal for romantic breaks, celebrations and weekends away but feature top meeting and conference facilities and are within easy reach of a prime transport link. Guests can op to for á la carte or indulge in some fine dining while the brasseries offer a more casual and contemporary way of enjoying a meal.

For further information, visit: www.edenhotelcollection.com where you can find links to each establishment.

THE PLACE

TO BE SEEN

The economic conditions may remain harsh but, insists Mark, this is not a time for businesses to stand still and stop investing in their products “We continue to keep the quality and standard extremely high across all our hotels and this year are focusing on establishing ourselves as one of the leading independent quality groups of luxury hotels in the UK. We will continue to invest in our hotels in order to increase our competitive edge and stay ahead of other operations,” he adds. “To establish ourselves as market leaders we have increased our sales effort with the recruitment of two excellent business development managers who will focus on the leisure and corporate markets.’” The group certainly is on course for good things, having seen a 40% growth in the size over a five-month period alone, something Mark acknowledges would be a challenge for any business. We have come through this incredibly well which is a testimony to our strong team,” he adds. “We have stayed true to the core values of quality and excellence that we hold across the collection and these standards are reflected in the retention of our awards and accolades and the commitment and dedication of the Eden team.”

Wolsey Sausage Co. Putting the sizzle in the sausage.

A local sausage company has added extra sizzle to its business by opening a retail shop to supply its fantastic range of sausages and fresh meats direct to the public. Experienced butcher Mark Ellis, and his wife Bernie, took over the well-established, Wolsey Sausage Company ten years ago; supplying premier quality sausages to farm shops and the catering trade.

Wolsey has just launched a new sausage, Pork and Black Pudding, which is proving extremely popular. Mark tells us that while Cumberland Sausage is a regular favourite, during the barbecue season it’s hard to keep pace with demand for Pork and Chilli sausages. Mark said that opening the retail shop was, “A no-brainer, we already owned the whole building and there was a vacant area on the ground floor, fronting Lea House Road.” The shop opened to the public just before Christmas and has been an outstanding success, offering first rate products, excellent customer service and great value. The shop was a natural development for this friendly couple who say: “We wanted regular shoppers to be able to benefit from local produce at the same great prices we give the trade.” Mark says “We’re better value than the supermarkets and being a butcher, I understand the importance of good quality, great tasting meat.”

The

Wagon Wheel Down a country lane between high hedges redolent with the scent of blackthorn and fringed with cow parsley, in the Worcestershire village of Grimley, nestles a traditional black and white building, The Wagon Wheel.

ranging from good old fish and chips through to halibut meuniere, followed by an indulgent sweet or coffee, there is something to please everyone. Bar meals are available every lunchtime and in the evenings from Monday to Saturday. For a real treat, however, visit the restaurant, and step back in time to the very best of the 70’s, where the theme of well cooked food and excellent service is maintained in the fully air conditioned restaurant. Crystal glasses, crisp white table linen, fresh flowers and gleaming silverware signal a treat in store. In addition to the al a carte menu the Wagon Wheel offers a fixed price lunchtime menu of either two or three courses with coffee, and an all inclusive 3 course dinner menu from Monday to Friday.

A 15th Century, picture postcard Public House, and Restaurant set in attractive gardens with a large car park has immediate appeal. In the summer months the colourful hanging baskets and the fragrance of lavender from the gardens contribute to the building’s old world charm. The interior of the building maintains the theme, with beams, small paned windows and dark oak furniture, a large extension blends seamlessly with the inside of the original building. When Guiseppe and Julie Juliano took over the business 25 years ago the restaurant was in the second bar area, but this cosy beamed room now doubles as a private area for family functions or small celebrations when required.

The service is impeccable, and the menu extensive. A superb range of dishes, including melt in the mouth steaks, are cooked over burners in the restaurant by Mr Juliano himself with expansive Mediterranean flair and gusto contributing a sense of theatre to any occasion. The silver sweet trolley, tall and fully laden with a choice of wonderful home made desserts and a selection of carefully chosen cheeses, doesn’t disappoint either.

The bar carries an interesting selection of beers, local ales, and a comprehensive list of wines, spirits and soft drinks. The Wagon Wheel is popular locally for bar snacks, and light lunches as all the food is homemade and freshly prepared from local ingredients whenever possible. The bar food is displayed on a blackboard and patrons can choose from a delicious bowl of soup, a sandwich, jacket potatoes, steak and chips, omelettes, salads, pasta dishes, curry or perhaps a casserole, and fish dishes

The Wagon Wheel is always very busy for Sunday lunches, as children and families are made very welcome, with a good selection of roasts on offer; and yet again, a touch of theatre being provided by the domed silver trolley from which the roast beef is carved. The Wagon Wheel is an ideal venue for a small wedding reception, family party, or special occasion. Booking is essential for Sunday Lunch, and Christmas, and is advisable for Fridays and Saturdays.
