Applegate has emerged as the UK business marketplace... a place where buyers and sellers meet to create sales.
HE online marketing leader for more than 15 years, Applegate offers a blend of digital power and old fashioned advertising that allows you to craft a company profile that serves as the foundation for the presentation of your products and services. Applegate gives you the opportunity to individualise your products to meet your marketing needs. E-T-A, a circuit breaker and engineering technology company based in Aylesbury, has helped grow its business exposure through the marketing of their sector-specific products with Applegate. By advertising targeted to individual industries including automotive, chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and aerospace, as well as technical specifications and applications, they were able to increase their market presence and identify measurable sales enquiries through Applegate. “We advertised our automotive plant engineering solutions directly to the car makers,” said Albert Pipe, general manager of E-T-A UK. “Applegate and our account manager’s knowledge of both E-T-A products and Internet marketing gave us the ability to market specific products to our most relevant industries. That was vital for us.” Applegate’s powerful and focused B2B Products and Services pages will attract the right buyers for your products – buyers that have both the technical knowledge and purchasing resources. With multiple links back to your website and your Applegate Company Focus, B2B Products and Services pages give buyers so many options to contact you directly to purchase specific products.
“We have always been committed to putting knowledgeable buyers in front of our clients,” said Neil Tweedie, Product Development Director for Applegate. “Now, we feel we have a new website that showcases the unique products and services of our customers in a way never done before.” David Lenehan, director of Northern Industrial Electronics in Blackburn says he can easily determine the quality and validity of enquires from Applegate because of the level of information given, generally enquires will include volume required, value, sizes, and shipment queries. “Without Applegate, we might not have received these enquiries in the first place as it may not have been an area we were consciously targeting through Adwords or other marketing activities,” Lenehan said. The electronic parts company started with a basic presence and began getting a number of enquiries. After working with their account manager, they decided to advertise using Applegate’s free Company Focus, and they were very impressed with the results. Unlike traditional marketing tools, your Applegate experience can adapt and change as your business does. You can quickly add new products and services to your profile in order to generate instant interest. With our digital power on your side, you will have in an immediate impact in the marketplace. For more information, or to chat to someone about the new Applegate, please call 0845 600 7177 or email marketing@applegate.co.uk. The site can be found at applegate.co.uk.

Friar Gate Studios was launched in Spring 2007 in response to the continued growth of the region’s creative industries. Funded by public sector finance, including a £1m grant from Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DDEP), the aim was to offer affordable modern office facilities and a creative environment for ambitious businesses. Six years on and Friar Gate Studios is now home to some of Derby’s most exciting young creative businesses, one of the fastest growing sectors in the region.
FRIAR GATE
STUDIOS The recently completed £800,000 refurbishment of a Derby business hub has seen it streak ahead in the technical age. Friar Gate Studios, a purpose-built centre for growing businesses in the creative industries, is the first building in Derby to receive super fast 100MB broadband as part of Derby City Council’s bid to upgrade its broadband service.
Comprising of 40 offices, the Studios offer stylish, modern facilities for web and fashion designers, film and radio producers, advertising agencies, architects and many more. Tenants have access to broadband, on-site management and reception services, meeting rooms, IT support and visitor parking and other benefits, including virtual office and hot desking, conference facilities, café bar, video conferencing, event and networking opportunities. The Studios are currently enjoying their highest occupancy levels since opening, far exceeding the Derby City Council’s original targets. “We have worked hard to establish Friar Gate Studios as the hub of creativity for the city of Derby,” said centre manager Ann Bhatti. “Challenges such as ensuring our business services are fit for purpose for the fast-paced creative industries and upgrading our infrastructure to meet the demands of growing businesses have all been addressed and conquered by listening to our customers.”
The revamp also includes new kitchens, showers and upgraded office accommodation and heralds the forthcoming launch of the Connect project. Scheduled to come on stream in early 2014, Connect is set to bring together the City Council's workspaces, including Friar Gate Studios, Kings Chambers and the new Cathedral Quarter Enterprise Centre, the former Magistrates Court and Shot Tower, in order to connect workspaces, people, expertise and knowledge and boost economic growth.
4
Friar Gate Studios has also been sharing its success with others. Since taking over the management and marketing of the city centre-based Kings Chambers office suites in October 2011, occupancy levels there have risen from 61% to maximum, attracting a record number of tenants. Now it’ll be playing a key part in boosting the local economy via its involvement in the Connect project, which will offer

Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE, Chief Executive of MITIE and Opening Doors Business Awards judge
Good Business is Harnessing Young Talent In this economic environment it’s never been more important for businesses to look beyond the traditional business fairs and recruitment routes to harness great talent and build our country’s skills base. Recently, I joined a panel of business leaders, including James Caan, Peter Searle, Kay Allen and James Turner from the Sutton Trust, to judge nominations for the Deputy Prime Minister’s Opening Doors Business Awards 2013. These awards showcase the very best traineeships and recruitment schemes offered by companies signed-up to the ‘Business Compact’ – a commitment to career opportunities based on what you know, not who you know. I was very impressed to see some of the largest companies in the country reaching out to young people from all walks of life. Of the 150 members of the Compact over half offer work experience to disadvantaged young people and 92% think opening up recruitment on a fairer footing will give their organisation a broader range of talent. I also met some truly inspiring hard-working young people – they’re enthusiastic, eager and ready to learn, giving all they’ve got. With the odds stacked him, Adam Taylor worked hard to get on in life, supporting his family and defying his ‘special needs’ tag to work his way through college and university to succeed as a high-flyer at Airbus. Adam was all but written-off in school but now is a great asset to his employer. That’s why leading businesses are looking for ways to make sure that young people with talent and drive no longer go unnoticed. Channel 4 won the Deputy Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence as they have shown a commitment to inspiring and developing young people which runs right to the heart of the business. Other winners include law firm Slaughter and May for its incredibly successful school mentoring work; EE for targeting apprenticeships in areas of high-unemployment; and Marks and Spencer for its work to give young people who are not in education or employment a second chance.

Like these companies, I’m a firm believer that businesses big and small can do more to attract talented individuals from a diverse workforce giving the UK the edge we need to compete on a global scale. After all, a company’s employees are their biggest investment – you’re not only investing in your business, but in UK plc. We need to cut through the system of informal networks, break down the barriers of university prejudice and family internships to recognise the potential out there – this means throwing our doors open to offer young people that chance to grasp opportunities. Growing talent in-house generates company loyalty like nothing else. Talent is out there for the taking – and we need to recognise our young people have more attributes than just youth on their side.

“It enables us to offer comprehensive online marketing solutions to compliment offline activity,” says Ian. “We provide the full range, including web design, social media, SEO and adword campaigns. “This latest expansion is already massively popular. We are working on about five e-commerce sites plus several online marketing campaigns, making it the biggest single change since we started the business.” At the heart of everything are the customers, all multi-nationals, start-ups and everything in between. 2013 has been a bumper birthday year for Catalogues 4 Business. There’s been so much more to celebrate than 15 years of successful trading. The Banbury catalogue designer and digital marketing company started the year still celebrating its recent first industry award win, ECMOD Supplier of the Year, and the ensuing months have seen demand boom for its newly acquired digital division’s services. It’s also been investing firmly in the future by establishing an apprenticeship scheme in partnership with the local college.
“Working with them to achieve their business goals is extremely rewarding and it’s a real pleasure to have been involved with some fantastic companies, several of which have stayed with us for many years,” says Ian. “They all have a passion to learn, develop and succeed, and this is matched by our desire for excellence in everything we do.” The ethos has reaped further dividend with the ECMOD Supplier of the Year Award for Creative and Design Services. “It’s not decided upon by our peers, or a professional body, but our clients,” explains Ian. “They are the ones who said lovely things about us and it is this criteria on which the award is based. “So, a big thank you - it is really appreciated. “

Managing Director Ian Simpson Having successfully ridden the recent economic storm with continued growth and the consolidation of its position as one of the UK’s top catalogue marketing agencies, Managing Director Ian Simpson and his team are eager to embrace the opportunities the next 15 years and more will bring. “We hate to boast, but we must be in the running for the country’s most prolific catalogue designer award,” he grins.

“We have produced more than 1,100 catalogues covering products such as petfoods, industrial supplies, giftware, charity fund-raising and catering supplies and we’ve loved every minute of it. “We don’t simply churn out page after page; we challenge, understand and exceed our clients’ expectations. Our catalogue design solutions exploit brand and product offering to maximum effect and make every page work hard to sell.” The magic takes place in premises at Wykham Park Farm, in Banbury, created by a team of nine staff, who are regularly supported by specialist freelancers. Mystery surrounds the work of Staffordshire’s Retail Maxim, but that’s why it’s been so successful for the last 20 years helping the country’s major companies unlock the secrets of providing great customer service. There may be only 30 people at its Burntwood Business Park offices, but via its 25,000 researchers throughout the UK and southern Ireland, Retail Maxim’s mystery shopper service provides a critical monitoring and development process for businesses determined to keep their clients happy.
a tool to train and motivate their staff to improve customer service,” he adds. “With better service, sales can only go up.” Recent years have seen a huge growth in Retail Maxim’s Exit Survey provision - consulting ‘real’ customers with a focused questionnaire to discover their views as they exit outlets - and the progress of online studies in which customers are asked to take part in an Online Satisfaction Survey.

PERSONNEL Top end department stores, coffee shops, fashion operators and bookmakers plus many more have all used mystery shoppers from the company which, since its formation by Chief Executive Donald Marshall in 1993, has become one of the country’s leading providers.
Extra Personnel was established in 1992. Since then we've grown to become the 76th largest recruitment business in the UK. We find and supply temporary and permanent workers for industrial, office, secretarial and transport roles.
With the November launch of a new and updated website marking its official two-decades celebration, Retail Maxim is forging on by developing its Online Satisfaction Surveys service and recruiting more researchers and office personnel. Also offering activities such as Exit Surveys, Video Mystery Shopping and more, the company’s core service is Mystery Shopping, in which one of its carefully trained researchers poses as a real customer, to visit shops, cafes and other service environments. They then complete a questionnaire, precisely designed by Retail Maxim and the client, reporting on their experience. Multiple visits then produce data covering areas, regions and various groups of outlets and the information is used by the clients in coaching and training to improve their services. Robert Brocklesby who is the company’s joint Managing Director alongside Mark Trythall, says Mystery Shopping used to be used as a big stick by retailers who focused on bad stores. But no more. “We believe they can now see its value as

“If a new piece of technology comes out, it can be added into their existing site without trouble.” Web design products include: Car Valuation, New and Used Cars, Cog Cast, the ability to “Add Cars To Shortlist” or “Show Last Car Viewed”, Live Chat, Finance Integration and much more.
There’s a piece of techno-wizardry that enables car purchasers to not only check a dealer’s stock or make an enquiry, but to walk around a showroom and even step inside the vehicles - all from the comfort of their own desktop, tablet or smartphone.
It’s a 360° car interior tour within a 360° showroom tour, all within Google Streetview. It is a powerful way of engaging with online customers, and just the kind of feature that companies from independents to multi-site franchised dealers and car supermarkets are increasingly calling upon innovative Warwickshire digital marketing agency, Bluesky Interactive, to deliver. Car dealers aren’t just coming to the agency because they can transform their websites and increase their sales, however. They’re seeking out the Bluesky experts because they know that they’re the best, and are always the first to introduce trend-setting ideas in a competitive market. “That said, we don’t just jump blindly – we’re keen on testing everything so that we know what will deliver results and what won’t,” assures Managing Director, Alan Crane. Recently voted the best SEO supplier by Car Dealer Magazine readers in the 2013 Car Dealer Power awards, Bluesky Interactive builds websites based on its own exclusive Cog Platform.
Bluesky Interactive also provides the full range of digital marketing services for every sector, not just the automotive industry, with in-house experts specialising in SEO Content Strategy, Social Media Strategy/Management, Paid search and Pay Per Click. With offices in Sheffield, Warwick, and Haywards Heath, the company is perfectly placed to cover all regions and expand its list of prestigious clients. “We focus on three core areas – results, relationships, and cutting edge technology,” says Alan. “Our cutting edge technology is all based on the Cog Platform, plus working with partners who provide exciting automotive technology. This is used to deliver our car dealers the results they need from their website. A successful customer means we are successful, so we have to deliver the results.” “At the core of the business is the Client Services Team which,” says Alan, “makes the company stand out. “Every client, large or small, gets a named Client Services Team who works with them to ensure we meet their business objectives. “We don’t just say yes – this is true customer service where we’ll say if we don’t think money would be well spent in a certain area. This ends up being a mutually beneficial relationship and is what helps our customers to stay with us for years.”
“This allows dealers to easily and cost effectively add products and technology without the need for a complete website redesign,” explains Alan.

Protecting Your Business Security needs to be an integral part of your business strategy, according to leading protection specialists The Home Office estimates that crime costs the British economy more than £60 billion per year while a survey by the British Chamber of Commerce found that 80% of businesses felt that crime was a problem in their local area. Crime can have a devastating effect on your business. There were over 9.2 million crimes committed against businesses across a variety of sectors in the last year alone according to recent statistics devised by the Home Office; it affects all sectors of the economy from manufacturing, wholesale, retail, transportation, storage, accommodation and even food services. Theft is by far the most common type of crime experience by businesses accounting for 74% of all incidents. This translates to a massive 6.8 million incidents and repeat victimisation is commonplace. David McCarthy, of Netwatch UK, a leading remote visual surveillance company explains, “Opportunistic thieves are targeting anything from small items that can be sold quickly, to fuel, scrap metal, copper and other valuable plant equipment left unsecured at business premises. “Heavy Goods Vehicles have become a major target for thieves across the UK. They can contain up to 1,000 litres of fuel, which would cost approximate £1,350 at the pump. Fuel is easy to use or sell and is difficult to track making it an extremely attractive target.”
Metal and copper theft is a huge concern for UK business owners as record high commodity prices have led to an enormous rise in metal theft across the UK in recent years. In most cases of metal theft the replacement cost is substantially higher than the cost of the stolen item, as thieves cause damage in the process of the theft, especially in the case of wiring theft which can leave rural businesses without telephones or internet for several days. Prevention is key and industry professionals are urging businesses to review their security procedures as a matter of urgency. Real-time remote security monitoring of businesses that can prevent crime before it happens is available. Directing operations through remote CCTV and the use of advanced detection techniques, enables monitoring and intervention as soon as a security cordon is breached, alerting the intruders to the fact that they are being watched and that the police have been informed. This intervention is critical. Traditional CCTV cameras provide a visual record of the incident but do not prevent the crime taking place. The ability of Intervention Specialists to take action while the attempted intrusion is taking place most often results in criminals leaving the scene before doing any damage.

But, again, the smart companies know the Adaptive IT Solutions boffins who make up its invaluable support services are the ones to call upon in the event of high-tech meltdown. “We often hear about the numerous calls and hoops people have to jump through to reach their support service,” says Chris.
Being in with the Adaptive IT crowd is paying dividends for savvy companies. Having the end-to-end solutions provider on their side when it comes to helping them save hours, energy and costs, is putting them in pole position for growth. And growth is something Adaptive IT Solutions knows all about, having launched with five members of staff in 2002 and enjoyed continual expansion to its current team of 22. With an annual £2million turnover, further increase is anticipated, thanks to Managing Directors Daniel Lewell and John Richarsdon’s plans to recruit more sales staff and qualified technical engineers and expand the business’s premises. “We are an energetic IT solutions company whose qualified staff aim is to save our clients time, energy and money,” says Operations Director Chris Amies. “Specialising in professional network infrastructure through to voice and data switches, as well as desktop hardware and support, our goal is to enable businesses to capitalise on new developments to ensure their growth.” Based on the Kingsheath Industrial Estate in Northampton, Adaptive IT Solutions only sources the best Digital Signage products, projectors, video conferencing and Wi-Fi solutions for all its products and services. Gallagher Heath, the dynamic insurance broker and risk adviser, part of the Arthur J. Gallagher group, is changing to create a stronger collective identity as the firm expands. The planned change to Arthur J. Gallagher is part of an exciting growth story of mergers and acquisitions, especially over the last five years, to develop areas of specialist expertise - most recently with an agreement to buy, the Giles Group of Companies and completion of a deal for Belmont International.
The group was recently delighted to have its professionalism, and exceptional levels of service recognised by the receipt of a national award. Gallagher Heath, was awarded the coveted three-star Investors in Customers Award (IIC). Bev James
CEO of The Coaching Academy and Director of Mentoring at Start-Up Loans
When is the right time to expand your Business? It is a fact of life that any successful and well run business is going to grow and expand over time – both in terms of staff numbers, the demands on the business and most importantly of all, turnover and profit.
2. Is your current set-up flexible enough to cope with fluctuations in demand? When it comes to small firms in the early days of their development it can make a big difference to take a flexible approach to business. If you have staff who have the training and experience to carry out a number of different roles it means that people can easily adapt to cope with the changing demands of the business. 3. Can any jobs or tasks be outsourced to freelancers?
Bev James Every healthy company has to be allowed to develop and the key to growth is to successfully manage the process. Growing too quickly in the early years is unfortunately one of the most common reasons for business failure. I am a big believer in planning for success but when it comes to growth, deciding on a strategy may not be that simple and straightforward. The reality is that each business is very different and there is no one size strategy that can be used when it comes to managing business expansion. Expansions can be a part of a well thought out strategy but it can also sneak up on you simply through organic growth or increased demand for the services and products you are providing. When it comes to organic growth, expansion can happen quite naturally as you gradually take on more resources to deal with increasing demands and pressures. One by one your team can grow as you recruit new staff to deal with the extra work, and before you know it the business has doubled in size. For small businesses, this type of organic growth and gradual expansion can be fairly easy to manage providing you have the right building blocks in place. Growth is all about striking the right balance and taking a measured approach. Here are just a few questions to take into account before you take the potentially expensive decision to expand your office or add new members to your team:
The world of work has become much more fluid and flexible as a result of the recession and the internet. There’s no such thing as a job for life in the current environment and more people are choosing to go down the freelance route. With a rapidly expanding market it makes perfect sense to take full advantage of this new reality. Using freelancers is not only cost effective it also offers greater flexibility for businesses. You can take on extra work as and when you need it and avoid the cost and hassle of taking on full-time staff. 4. Is everyone on your team working to their full capability? Perhaps the answer to increased workloads lies within the office itself rather than the external factors that affect your business. Sometimes it pays to take a close look at the way your outfit operates and how your team functions. Often you can improve performance and productivity simply by changing things around within the office. While some staff are being overstretched, others might not have enough work to keep them busy throughout the day. 5. Is the increase in demand for products or services seasonal and is it likely to continue? It always helps to take a long-term view when it comes to taking on new members of staff. Before rushing out into the recruitment sector, you need to ask how the business is performing and is there a pattern emerging? There is no point in taking new people on if the demand is only going to be short term. 6. Who can you go to for advice? Don’t try to navigate your business expansion alone, find a mentor or a coach who can offer support and guidance. When you are starting out on the expansion journey, it is always reassuring to get as much advice or support as you can about where you are heading. Bev James is a business mentor, best-selling author of DO IT! or DITCH IT, CEO of the Coaching Academy and Director of Mentoring at Start-Up Loans www.bevjames.com @Bev_James. You can explore DISC further by downloading Bev’s free business App DO IT! OR DITCH IT, with access to a DISC profile questionnaire and a free DISC guide.
1. In these days of fast developing technology do you need to take on extra staff to cope with demand? It might save time and money in the long run to invest in new technology rather than taking on new employees. A little bit of research into what is available on the technology market can save a lot of expense in the long run. Spending on new software or computers might actually be a better solution than taking on new staff.

Toby Lanyon, COO, explained, “TradeRiver is a non-bank solution and operates outside of existing financing arrangements such as invoice discounting/factoring, meaning suppliers now have a new and additional source of working capital without having to pledge any security to support it, while our client has been able to stabilise and control its vital supply chain.”
TradeRiver offers a new, faster, more responsive approach to trade finance. In the second of three articles about TradeRiver we look at how TradeRiver has enabled various creditworthy UK businesses, hindered by a shortage of working capital, to grow.
With companies whose stock has a clear rotation, supplying to order, as in the case of a paper reprocessor servicing a large retail chain, expansion called for larger quantities of raw materials, and thus payments, to their supplier ahead of settlement from their customer. TradeRiver proved the ideal solution here too, enrolling the reprocessor as a Buyer, and the supplier as a Seller, meant that as the retail customers were settling their invoices before repayment to TradeRiver fell due, the need for supply chain working capital was completely eliminated. We are a trading nation importing both raw materials and finished product. Overseas companies, particularly those in the Far East, frequently require payment prior to dispatch. For a young or expanding company this can cause serious problems, as working capital becomes tied up in the invoice trail for the stockholding necessary to meet demand, creating significant funding gaps in the supply chain.
The engineering sector is seeing fantastic growth at the moment, particularly in the automotive sector. Although growth is good it can present a number of challenges. In the case of a company that builds specialist measuring equipment for the global vehicle industry, sourcing components from local smallto-medium sized suppliers, their rapid turnover and increased demand meant that a core supplier was struggling with the cashflow and working capital challenges of increasing their volume to meet demand. The suppliers’ circumstances meant that traditional methods of bank funding were not available to meet the shortfall. TradeRiver had a solution. The client registered as a Buyer with TradeRiver and at the same time introduced its suppliers to the programme, who enrolled as Sellers. Because TradeRiver releases payment for each transaction as soon as the Buyer accepts the obligation to pay, our client can provide its Sellers with the working capital required to meet increasing demand.
20
“Transforming trade finance for SMEs” TradeRiver is able to assist UK based companies by enrolling the importer as a Buyer with TradeRiver, and encouraging their suppliers to enrol as Sellers. TradeRiver releases the payment to the Seller, while giving the Buyer 120 days of credit, thereby releasing 100-plus days of working capital.
If you are a busy UK based company, wanting to expand but lacking the financial liquidity to do so, give TradeRiver a call for an informal discussion about your business on +44 (0)20 7788 7690 to see how they can help you too, or visit the web site

"The private pensions industry has already managed to prevent Nest from winning some of the most profitable pensions business."
companies including Edinburghbased Aegon and Scottish Life. Joanne Segars, chief executive of the National Association of Pension Funds, said Nest had an important role to play in making auto-enrolment a success.
With time rapidly running out for many employers to set up their own scheme in order to meet their Auto Enrolment obligations, it seems timely to look at the Government’s own default scheme, NEST. Any employer who has not set up a qualifying pension scheme by their staging date will be automatically enrolled in NEST, a government backed workplace pension scheme that meets the criteria of a qualifying scheme under the Pensions Act 2008, and has a public service obligation to let any employer that wishes to use it to do so when their employer duties begin. NEST has been designed for a broad range of employers and members, including those who may not have engaged with workplace pension schemes before. NEST is a trust based, not for profit, low cost pension scheme. Members pay a 1.8 per cent charge on contributions plus a 0.3 per cent annual management charge (AMC). Together, the charges are broadly equivalent to a 0.5 per cent AMC, giving potential members access to the sort of low charges enjoyed by people in large occupational schemes today. It is a defined contribution scheme which means that minimum contributions are fixed, usually as a percentage of a member’s earnings. The retirement pot a member gets from a defined contribution scheme depends on how much has been contributed, the investment return achieved and the amount of charges over time. Automatically enrolled individuals will receive minimum employer contributions in addition to their own contribution, plus tax relief if
they are eligible. These minimum contributions are percentages based on a band of earnings between £5,668 and £41,450 per year (in October 2013 terms). Concerns have been expressed that workers making contributions into any scheme may have unrealistic expectations of their final entitlement. Steve Webb Pensions Minister has warned that the government scheme alone will not be enough to ensure the financial well-being of pensioners. He said “Employees on average salaries will have to save more than the amounts contributed through auto-enrolment if they want to maintain their standard of living in retirement.” He told the BBC's Today programme that the maximum contribution, equivalent to 8% of earnings, would not produce sufficient pension income to maintain an employee's standard of living in retirement, particularly those on higher salaries. NEST has an annual contribution limit of £4,500 (for the 2013/14 tax year), as well as a ban on transfers-in of members’ existing pension funds for at least the first five years of operation of the scheme, in order not to damage private sector pension providers and distort the market. Industry experts, however, maintain that the Government has missed an opportunity to boost automatic enrolment into pensions at work, after Steve Webb said restrictions on Nest, would remain until 2017.
By 2017 most attractive employer business will have chosen other schemes. The longer the restrictions remain, the less business NEST will attract, because once employers have already chosen a scheme for their autoenrolment duties, they will be less likely to want to move to NEST later."
She said: "There might have been a case for lifting these barriers earlier, but doing so from 2017 provides the clarity and certainty that employers, savers and the pensions market all need." She added: "Employers will be able to treat Nest like any other pension on the market, and savers will be able to pool their small pension pots into a simpler and bigger fund."
Steve Webb, however maintains, "With over 250,000 members already, it is clear that NEST is a success. Targeting low to moderate earners that the market has traditionally forgotten, NEST has ensured that everyone has access to quality pension provision.”
But former government adviser Dr Ros Altmann said the government "seems to have bowed to industry pressure" by delaying the changes. She said:

“Without it we wouldn’t have the range of in-house expertise available and it still remains at the core of the practice today,” acknowledges Rob. With an extensive list of services, that encompasses more than just accounting and tax matters but includes wider ranging matters like business intelligence, disaster relief planning, independent financial advice, and wills, trusts and estate management, HB&O is pretty much a one-stop shop for all owner-managed businesses.
More than just bean counters... Newly named Most Active Agent of the Year ehB Commercial, was always going to be a winner with Harrison Beale & Owen on board.
But the plans are to add even more services to make the allround support complete, thus helping even more businesses turn in to winners. “We rate partnering clients who grow and become successful as our greatest business success,” smiles Rob. “It makes it all worthwhile.”
The commercial property consultancy and chartered surveyor is just one of the many businesses that chartered accountants and financial planners HB&O has helped.
To see the full range of available HB&O services, go to www.hboltd.co.uk To make an enquiry, email info@hboltd.co.uk
And the Leamington Spa practice is a bit of a winner itself - it’s been nominated for Midlands Independent Firm of the Year at the 2013 industry ‘Oscars’ - The British Accountancy Awards. “We wish ehB Commercial all the best on its successes to date and are delighted to have been shortlisted for a prestigious award too,” says Rob Kendall, HB&O Managing Director.

“I think the nomination reflects our expertise in accountancy, business advice and personal finance.” For more than 90 years, the company has helped ownermanaged firms in the town and across Warwickshire and, as one of the region’s leading independent practices, provides a total support package, assisting in profit creation and tax mitigation. The team of more than 50, which includes experts in sectors, such as accounts, tax, wills, HR and IT, can advise and support people along every step of their business journey, whether they are starting, growing, investing in or selling their enterprise. “Company bosses live in a tough, fast-moving and competitive world, making decisions on a daily basis that affect not only their own futures but their families and their employees and that shapes their bottom line,” says Rob. “So they want to work with accountants who also live in the real world. We know what you're looking for in an accountant and advisor. “We've learned a lot over the decades, so we begin by understanding how clients and their businesses work, their challenges and their goals. Then we come up with proactive, practical strategies to keep them moving forward.” Although it’s well rooted in the local business community, HB&O has only operated under its current title since the firms of DA Owen and Harrison Beale merged in 2004. Despite the development presenting one of the company’s greatest business challenges, successfully overcome, it’s been one of its best moves yet.

ehB are an established independent firm offering a complete range of commercial property solutions across Warwickshire. Their core services include lettings, sales and acquisitions, valuations, investment, rent reviews, lease renewals and landlord and tenant advice, management and rating of commercial property to include offices, shops, warehouses, industrial buildings and land.
COMMERCIAL Successful Leamington Spa commercial property consultants, ehB Commercial Ltd, have triumphed yet again in a national award. The company has trumped more than 60 other agents from the region to be named Warwickshire’s “Most Active Agent of the Year” for the fourth time by trade journal, Estates Gazette. The award recognises the standards of professionalism and customer service that this young company offers, and receiving the award for the fourth time represents a substantial achievement for an independent firm of chartered surveyors and commercial property consultants that was only established 5 years ago. The magazine also named ehB Commercial’s Victoria Mawer as “Deal Maker of the Year”, the second time she has been Victoria Mawer given this award. The Deal Maker category has only been running for three years and the firm has won it on all three occasions, with Victoria lifting the trophy this year and in 2011, and ehB Commercial director, Simon Hain, picking up last year’s award. When we spoke to Victoria about the award, she said that she was absolutely delighted by the recognition and paid tribute to the firm saying that it was very much a team effort. She attributed her success to an in depth knowledge of the local market and accurately assessing applicants’ requirements in order to steer them towards the properties that were going to be most beneficial for them.
(L-R) Danielle Biddle, Vanessa Holmes Scott Blake, Victoria Mawer, Nick Evans and Simon Hain. Wakemans Chartered Surveyors, provide ehB with a specialist dilapidations service, together with construction cost consultancy. The three Directors of ehB Commercial have a combined track record of over 65 years combined experience in the Leamington Spa and South Warwickshire market. The firm’s roots place it at the heart of the local commercial property market as a trusted, proven brand.
Mr Hain said, “We have remained very busy over the last four years despite the economic situation because we handle all kinds of commercial property, large and small and don’t just restrict ourselves to the large lucrative deals, coupled with great client care and service. “We have successfully handled sales and lettings of all kinds of commercial property from the single office or corner shop, to large office blocks and extensive warehouses. “We are expecting to become even busier as improving market rents and property values lead to more properties being placed with us. “There is a general improvement in the market and a shortage of supply in certain sectors. But confidence is returning and we have clients who are due to start two major developments in the area.”

businesses – we don’t treat any one as the same and always make sure we take into account the spoken and unspoken. Most of all, what we at Cooper Parry appreciate is that working alongside family can be hugely exhilarating and a cause for immense pride – which is why we will continue to work alongside family businesses and aim to increase our market share in this area. We have also been officially recognised for our work in this area, after being voted the Midlands' leading adviser to family businesses in both 2010 and 2012, and runners-up in 2011, something that showcases how seriously we take our work in this area.
families in business FIB is a specialist network of professionals, advisors and suppliers offering tailored services to meet the specific needs of family run firms – Cooper Parry is the official accountancy and Wealth partner to FIB and its member network in the East Midlands and we are looking to extend the work that we do with family businesses across the Midlands and beyond.

at the heart
Family businesses account for 80 to 90% of all business enterprises in the world and FIB figures show there are 204,098 family firms in the West Midlands, accounting for 58% of businesses in the area and 6.9% nationally. But despite their large presence, the business support services that are provided to family companies do not always take into account the often complex and personal issues which might be going on underneath the surface. On a day to day basis, family run firms experience the very same problems that other companies do - concerns about profit and loss, growth, competition etc. But whilst in a ‘traditional’ business there are set structures and processes relating to pay, promotion, succession planning and day to day communications, in a family business, because a colleague or your boss might also be your mother, father or uncle, the professional boundaries can become blurred. As well as this, FIB’s own research has identified some key trends that might be affecting family businesses in the UK – findings show that 41% plan to pass ownership and management to the next generation, often without any strategy of how, and that only 10% of family run businesses make it to the third generation. We pride ourselves on striving to understand issues like these on a case by case basis when working with family run

Positive News for the UK’s Construction Sector The UK’s construction industry is firing on all cylinders and is no longer the weakest link in the economy.
The new findings couldn’t be better for the construction industry which accounts for about 6.3% of the economy and has struggled for some time.
That’s the upbeat view of two senior figures following the latest sector survey which has recorded the fastest rise in output since 2007.
Schemes such as the Government’s Help to Buy, to support people looking to buy their first home and to spur construction of new properties, are being viewed as having some effect.
That’s not all. The Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index has also registered the sharpest rise in residential construction in more than a decade and business outlook optimism at its highest since 2010. It’s not the only survey showing the upturn. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) noted in August that construction output was up 4% on the year, the strongest annual increase since December 2011 while the National House Building Council (NHBC) reported a 25% increase in new home registrations for 2013 up to August. Tim Moore, Senior Economist at global financial information services company Markit, and author of the September report, says the third quarter of 2013 ended with output growth riding high amid greater spending on infrastructure projects and resurgent house building activity. “The reversal in fortunes has spanned commercial, residential and public sector construction projects,” he adds. “Builders are confident that a tide of new tender opportunities will continue to lift the construction sector, supported by improved development funding conditions and better underlying economic conditions. “The September survey suggests that constructors are beginning to react with confidence to the more positive landscape, as job creation and input buying both rose at robust rates over the month.” Commercial Director Richard Tamayo comments: "Our statistics continued the pattern we saw over the course of the year, with registration figures showing a noticeable improvement on recent years.”
The Construction Products Association is also forecasting construction output growth of 2.2% in 2014 and 4.5% in 2015, but at the same time is warning about the prospects of sustained growth because of what it describes as low activity in the infrastructure sector. Economics Director, Noble Francis warns. “We predict that construction’s recovery will be led primarily by private housing in the short-term, but will only be sustained in the long-term with broader growth from other sectors and most notably the vital infrastructure sector, where government announcements will need to translate into real activity on the ground." The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) says its members are forecasting a sharp acceleration in business activity over the next 12 months and there’s a greater expectation of more jobs. However, the improving picture for employment is already being reflected in a jump in reported skill shortages, highlighting the potential for capacity issues. Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist, comments: “It is particularly concerning that we’re already receiving reports of some skill shortages as well as capacity constraints for building materials such as bricks.”
There could be help on this front from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) which has announced an initiative as part of its efforts to get the industry training and back into growth. Its Training Committee – with members drawn from across the industry - has agreed to provide an exceptional training grant of £15m to reward employers, and make an extra £15m available to encourage them to train within the 2013/14 Grants Scheme. David Noble, Chief Executive Officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, says the new figures show the construction sector is firing on all cylinders. “In September, growth in UK house building hit heights not seen for 10 years and was supported by a solid acceleration in business from commercial construction, whilst growth in civil engineering remains well above the long run average. Confidence is now at its strongest in almost three and a half years. “Having been in the doldrums for so long, builders are using this renewal as a platform to invest, with employment seeing the most dramatic upturn in close to six years. “Inevitably, purchasing levels have also increased, but the adverse effect of this is increased pressure on suppliers to meet growing levels of demand, to the extent that their performance deteriorated at the fastest rate for 16 years. “These pressures, along with increased cost burdens have the potential to act as a brake on the sector, but should not overshadow the overwhelmingly positive picture for UK construction.”

Birmingham takes to the stage for MIPIM 2014 Birmingham is aiming to make a bold statement at MIPIM 2014 by joining 25 partners from across the city – more than ever before – to promote its flagship schemes and infrastructure projects. The world’s largest real estate show, MIPIM is taking place in Cannes, France on 11-14 March. It hosts more than 20,000 participants from 80 countries, ranging from global investors to CEOs and journalists. Most major European cities attend the event to showcase their latest developments to potential funders.
“The city is bucking the trend in attracting more overseas investment, despite a tough economic climate, because we offer businesses greater support and a better welcome than any other UK location. MIPIM provides a platform for us to engage with the organisations looking to invest in our new schemes and join in our economic growth.”
With a number of local projects under the spotlight, Birmingham will be celebrating unprecedented levels of investment in its infrastructure – while looking ahead to the future opportunities available to investors and developers.
More than 10 partners are already confirmed for MIPIM 2014, including Birmingham City Council, Brindleyplace, Calthorpe Estates, DLA Piper, Glenn Howells Architects, GVA, Jaguar Land Rover, Jones Lang LaSalle, Nikal and Thomas Vale. Business Birmingham aims to join with some 25 partners for MIPIM 2014.
Organised by inward investment programme Business Birmingham, its presence will focus on the city’s growing transport networks. This will include how HS2 is joining Birmingham with the UK’s other regional economic centres; Birmingham New Street station’s £600 million transformation; and the runway extension at Birmingham Airport bringing longhaul destinations closer to the city. Birmingham will also showcase flagship sites such as its economic zones – led by the city centre Enterprise Zone – which are offering investors financial benefits, business support, planning flexibility and 1.8 million sqm of new floorspace. Key sectors under the spotlight will include Birmingham’s growing technology scene. The city’s global profile as a business destination remains high, with investment industry title Site Selection recently ranking Birmingham as one of the top ten ‘best to invest’ Western cities in Europe. Sir Albert Bore, Leader of Birmingham City Council, will lead the city’s delegation in 2014. He commented: “Birmingham will be capitalising on its growing reputation as a European hub for enterprise and investment at MIPIM 2014. It has one of the most ambitious visions for urban development in Europe – from its plans for international connectivity to the range of unique infrastructure projects on the horizon.
Nick Payne, Managing Director at Nikal, explained why it is important for the company to attend the show: “Joining Birmingham’s MIPIM delegation once again is key to our strategy of securing investor interest in our regenerative Exchange Square development at Masshouse. MIPIM is a mustattend event for the global property industry.” Birmingham’s presence at MIPIM builds on the success of 2013’s show, which involved 11 events and 18 partners. Wouter Schuitemaker, Investment Director at Business Birmingham, added: “Securing inward investment relies on developing strong relationships with international business leaders, and speaking with them face to face enables us to really sell the city’s strengths. High profile events like MIPIM are crucial to showcasing the city’s confidence and credentials as a business destination to potential investors. “Birmingham’s growing international profile helped to increase levels of foreign direct investment into the city by over 50% last year, and is directly contributing to its economic success. To maintain this track record, the city needs to attend the global events that our competitors will have a presence at – or miss a valuable opportunity to meet new investors.” Birmingham secured a 52% rise in inward investment projects in 2012/13, against a national increase of 11%. This created or safeguarded over 4,000 jobs, generating an annual economic impact of £174 million.

Systems as a Premium Installer of the month in April, have already developed a system which is in use in Japan. With many businesses now being forced to reduce waste and their impact on the planet, Go Green Systems are well placed to offer advice and a professional solution to reduce their carbon footprints.
It's all systems ''Go'' for the Team at Go Green Systems! An MCS accredited, award winning solar PV installation company operating from Shrewsbury in Shropshire, offering installation, repair and maintenance of photovoltaic panels throughout the West Midlands to both the general public and business clients alike. Go Green Systems differentiate themselves from their competitors by focussing on Innovation / Technology as well as quality, back up and service rather than just price. They believe that their complete package ultimately offers the customer best value for money and the best green credentials. A number of organisations agree, in June they were short listed for the BMW Rydale Outstanding Customer Service award at the Shropshire Business Awards, and in June last year they were shortlisted for the national Which? Local Business of the Year 2012 and have just won The People’s Choice Video award for Local Business Accelerators 2013
In 2010 when electricians Tom Smith and Ben McDonald, who already had a successful electrical business, realised the market opportunities that feed in tariffs and photo voltaic panels offered, they seized the opportunity to utilise their existing skills and set up Go Green Systems.
Contact them on 01743 367221 or visit their web site wwwgogreensystems.co.uk for information on how you can save on your energy costs and help save the planet in the process.
Keeping the two companies separately works well because Go Green Systems is free to concentrate purely on energy creation and exploration of new types of renewable energy, whilst having the sister company on hand to carry out all the electrical part of any installation, saving the customer money. There is a great deal of misunderstanding regarding the benefits of solar energy. After the first initial rush when the various feed in tariffs were at their most favourable, demand dropped. The publicity surrounding the reduction of the feed in tariffs made things extremely difficult as people came to believe, incorrectly, that there was no longer an economic incentive to install the panels. The truth is that although the feed-in tariffs are less generous, they still provide a respectable return especially for businesses, particularly as the cost of installations has become much cheaper. This enables people to reduce their carbon footprint thus doing their bit for the planet. Having got the green bit firmly between their teeth, the team are looking at other forms of renewable energy and have became very enthusiastic about some new developments, particularly solar thermal, ground, air and water sourced heat pumps. They believe that the next thing on the horizon will be domestic battery systems to store excess green energy, rather than returning it to the grid. Panasonic who selected Go Green

“Whatever the requirement for dental materials and equipment, we have the products and the people to deliver it,” promises Dr Matheson. “Our materials, equipment, acrylic teeth and laboratory supplies come from leading suppliers and from quality products manufactured by us.”
It’s not just the patients who are smiling at Wolverhampton’s Treetops Dental Surgery.
Proud of its success and its ability to adapt and grow through challenging economic times, there’s still plenty for Wright Cottrell to, well, get its teeth into. Not least the arrival of its brand new website and recently launched online ordering system, My Wright Place.
The entire practice team is grinning from ear to ear having taken delivery of new equipment and materials from national dental dealer Wright Cottrell. The company was a natural choice as it assists practices, laboratories and hospitals across the UK. “What makes us unique is the depth and breadth of our service,” says Wright Cottrell Managing Director Dr Ian Matheson. “We supply more than 30,000 different products and offer nextday delivery to surgeries and labs, providing that important link between the dentist and technician.”
“The website is packed with lots of information and features we know customers will love, while the response to My Wright Place, following six months of testing by our sales team and customers, has been very positive. “It is easy to use and is so much more than a simple ordering tool. Most clients now wonder what they did without it!” As the turn of the year looms, Wright Cottrell, is dedicated to ensuring it remains a benchmark supplier to the dentistry profession.
Partnered with leading suppliers such as A-dec, Carestream Dental and W&H, Wright Cottrell goes all out to offer a practice unrivalled solutions.
Says Dr Matheson: “We have a good internal support network and all work as a team to offer the best possible service. “We aim to be your partners not just for today but for the future.”
“We manufacture alginate, teeth and denture base in our facilities here and abroad,” says Dr Matheson. “We also mill top quality frameworks and copings for technicians at our state-ofthe-art milling centre in Dundee.” The company, which has sites around the country, including Birmingham’s Gravelly Industrial Park, can rely on more than 100 years of clinical and dental experience - its roots go back to 1898 when Frank Halley Wright established a small dental supplies office in Dundee. Right from the start, the intention was to provide the highest standard of service and that is now not so much an aim but an enshrining company principle. Now the country’s oldest dental supplier, Wright Cottrell is a leading tooth manufacturing business with more than 100 employees which has expanded not just across the UK, but in to Europe, South Africa and the USA.

“The best modern facilities ensure patients receive the best possible care in an inviting and relaxing environment.” She acknowledged that bringing such a well established business into the 21st century has presented a number of challenges. Many of her highly valued team have been with the practice for over 30 years, but new rules and regulations require new policies and procedures, and the streamlining necessary to give each patient the care they deserve means that each member of staff must follow, understand and respect all protocols. The friendly face of dentistry Treetops Dental Surgery, in Codsall, Wolverhampton, has just completed a major two storey extension and refurbishment. The practice which was established in 1967 provides a range of treatments including routine dental care, orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry.
The team encourage you to visit regularly for routine check-ups and hygienist appointments, and they will always take the time to provide you with regular oral health advice and screening to give you the tools to take good care of your teeth and gums at home, encouraging a preventative approach, in line with current best practice. The extension and refurbishment has retained the building’s gleaming white 1930’s exterior while greatly improving and extending the practice’s facilities. The installation and equipping of two extra surgeries brings the total to nine, X-rays are digital and the process completely computerised, there is also a decontamination suite, a laboratory, an administration office, and improved disabled access and toilet. Having the dental laboratory on-site means that the dentists can work closely with the technician ensuring that all work is carried out to the highest of standards, and that denture repairs can be carried out while patients wait. They also offer denture repairs for non Treetops patients. These changes mean the surgery can now provide services for 7,800 patients in the local community. They accept private, Denplan and NHS patients. Denplan is an easy and affordable way to spread the cost of your routine preventative and restorative dental care. The practice under the leadership of owner, Polly Bhambra, is really excited about their new facilities and the range of multidisciplinary dentistry they can offer. Mrs Bhambra said: “We’re very pleased to have completed the refurbishment of Treetops Dental Surgery and the new surgeries, which means we can reach a greater number of patients in Codsall and surrounding areas increasing our capabilities.
As the business continues to grow Mrs Bhambra is looking forward to continuing to develop the practice and the range of services they can offer the community.

The Wellington The Wellington is a specialist Real Ale pub, described by one reviewer as a Real Ale and a Real Cider paradise! The pub is situated in the heart of Birmingham's city centre, just minutes from both New Street and Snow Hill train stations, and is open from 10am each day until midnight. The Wellington is taking a stand for Real Ale, challenging the dominance of the big brewery companies, the Wellington (or the "Welly" as it's known locally), has the finest ale selection of any pub in Central Birmingham. It's definitely a Pub (in the old fashioned sense of the word), shunning the modern idea of the cocktail or gastropub, and look-alike chains such as Punch, Enterprise and M&B.
Such chains can limit the choice of beers on offer but through the work of the Birmingham Branch of CAMRA, Birmingham pubs are seeing a resurgence of cask ale availability and choice, meaning that for Birmingham drinkers the choice of beers and ciders has never been greater. The Wellington is very much a Real Ale pub. It's beloved amongst the CAMRA crowd, so there will often be a lot of CAMRA-looking blokes at the bar, working their way down the taps and sampling everything that is on offer. You don't have to be an expert to enjoy what they have, though. The first thing you will notice when you enter is the dĂŠcor. It's traditionally furnished downstairs - but perfect for meeting up with friends and having a game of cards whilst enjoying

something locally brewed or a bit more exotic (y'know - from locations such as Lancaster). The most modern thing in the downstairs bar is the LCD boards telling you what beer is currently on, its originating brewery, price and the percentage. It also gives you a guide of whether it's a blonde or dark ale, which is really handy when you're looking at a list of names with no idea of the taste. The board also displays the CAMRA LocAle symbol for beers brewed within 30 miles of the pub.
The Wellington has 27 hand pulls, their regular beers being Wye Valley H.P.A, Purity Mad Goose, Oakham Citra, Titanic Plum Porter and Black Country Ales B.F.G, Fireside and Pig on the Wall. Another 11 pumps have constantly changing guest beers from independent and micro breweries. The Wellington is a great champion of the local brews and Ales from The Black Country Ales Brewery are especially popular in the pub. The Black Country Ales Brewery was established through a genuine love of traditional ales. They brew their outstanding selection of beers using only the finest ingredients to the highest possible standards. Their master brewer believes that
32257 3pgs_HorseWorld 24/11/2013 17:27 Page 2
the way to make the perfect pint is a no compromise combination of time, passion and dedication to the art. Brewing started on the site around 1834 and the tradition of producing hand crafted ales of real quality continued until just after World War 2 when the brewery was mothballed. Today much of the original equipment remains on view alongside all new micro brewery plant, and so, once again, this gem of West Midlands brewing heritage is serving up the finest hand crafted Black Country Ales to discerning drinkers all over the county.
The Wellington has 5 traditional ciders/perries on hand, in addition to all the Ales; if you just pick a beer with the most amusing name, take a Top Tip - remember the pump number! With this many different beers on, the staff struggle to remember the names of all of them; if you can give them a pump number - you'll have a friend for life. Nigel Barker, licensee since the opening of the Wellington in 2004, says proudly, “In 2005 we sold 2610 different Real Ales which we believe is more than any other pub in the UK. Since then our trade has grown each year and we now sell vast quantities of real ale. Having taken over the former offices on the two floors above the pub, the Welly underwent a major refurbishment earlier this year which has provided a first floor bar, small function room and a second floor meeting room, ideal for business meetings or small gatherings.
Outside they have a great new roof terrace, (through the door from the upstairs bar). It's a real sun trap and the ideal location to have a break from the hubbub of the city with a good pint. Although the only food on offer is the obligatory packet of crisps and pork scratchings, it says a lot about the place that if you fancy a bite to eat, you can bring your own food in, and rather than being told to get out, the staff will actually give you a plate and some cutlery. A very popular venue with locals and visitors alike, The Wellington has been a consistent winner of Birmingham CAMRA's Pub of the year award for 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009,

144 High Street, Aston, Birmingham B6 4UP This place gets VERY busy from about 3.30pm onwards as folk from the numerous nearby offices drift away from their jobs and stop in for a drink or three. It generally tends to thin out after about 8pm, although it can still be difficult to get a seat late into the evening. All in all, though, a cracking place to have a drink. There's not too much else to say about The Wellington other than it is all about the beer, and has an exceptional selection of real ales - the best selection in central Birmingham, by far.

The brewery produces up to 10 regular ales and a variety of seasonal and specially commissioned ales for the on-trade. Enville’s ales are available directly from the brewery either collected or delivered.
Enville Ales are celebrating 20 years of growth and success in the brewing industry, and 'land-marking' the occasion with the launch of their stunning new Craft Ale, Kasitra.
The company are proud that their Enville Ale became one of the fastest selling guest ales in the famous ‘Strangers Bar’ at the House of Commons and to have won over 50 awards in the past 6 years.
An American style Pale Ale, with a powerful citrus flavour and zesty aroma, derived from combining two of America’s finest quality hop varieties, Cascade and Citra hence the ale’s name, Kasitra.
Enville Directors Peter Isherwood (L) and Jerry Hedges (R) are served a pint of Enville Ale by Gavin Williamson MP
Since making its debut in April Kasitra has already featured in 6 beer festivals and was the first ale to ‘sell out’ at four of them, including CAMRA’s Wolverhampton Beer Festival. Enville Brewery began life in 1993 following substantial renovation to some derelict farm buildings in the hamlet of Cox Green near Enville.
But what pleases, director Jerry Hedges most of all is “Having ordinary people tell us how much they enjoy our ales”. The brewery plan a number of events in the second half of 2013 so check out their website at www.envilleales.com or telephone the brewery on 01384 873728

The Ivy House Ever since it opened to provide for early 19th century coal miners and canal workers, The Ivy House has been a rich seam of good food, fine ale and great hospitality. And while its environment today might not be quite so masculine - indeed the pub makes a point of being a femalefriendly place and takes a dim view of bad language - the 21st century food, drink and warm welcome remain as good as they ever were.
At the back the beer garden is a peaceful place enjoying rural views and, despite multi-levelled rooms being a feature of the pub’s traditional origins - it is listed on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map - both inside and out are wheelchair friendly. No wonder people keep coming back - testament to the Martin and Hillary’s success in the face of challenges such as the introduction of the smoking ban, poor weather, rising beer prices and, not least, the recession. “But we have stayed consistent while competitors around us have changed hands,” acknowledges Martin. If not better in certain aspects. The Ivy House is proud to have won CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2005-7 and 2009, spent seven years in The Good Bear Guide. Now, with the arrival of a new chef who has extended the menu of the popular restaurant, and a modified smoking area in the beer garden and refurbished women’s toilets, the pub is all set to welcome even more customers. They don’t have to be just drinkers either - The Ivy House, unusually for an inn, has its own Golf Society which plays on six days a year at various clubs in the area. It’s also the venue for the weekly Bloxwich Rotary Club meetings and, in May and October, hosts two beer festivals. “We set out to provide a woman-friendly, no curtains drawn, no bad language or behaviour, no loud music or televisiondominated establishment,” declares landlord Martin Cregeen. “What we can guarantee is quality real ales, quality home cooked food, events such as quiz nights and a quiet friendly atmosphere in which to enjoy good company.” Martin and landlady Hilary arrived at The Ivy House in 2004. In 2006 they extended the building with a new restaurant and state-of-the-art kitchen since when, says Hilary, the demand for food has increased four-fold. However, the pub, at Great Wyrley, in Staffordshire, remains a cosy and friendly place, with a bar area, somewhat differently, set in the middle of both bar and lounge.

“We will continue to provide a warm, women-friendly, quiet place to come to enjoy quality food and drink.”

The friendly and flexible approach is taking the Station Hotel successfully forward into the 21st century, ensuring that its story, which began more than 100 years ago, shows no sign of ending.
Visitors to Dudley’s Station Hotel can be assured of the film star treatment - after all, this is where Laurel and Hardy, Bob Hope and George Formby chose to stay. Here is where every effort is made to ensure guests feel extra special at this historic establishment, whatever the reason for their visit.
It first opened in 1898 and quickly grew to be the hostelry of choice. In 1936, it was extended and modernised at the same time the new Dudley Hippodrome opened. The theatre attracted some of the biggest stars of the era and many stayed at the Station Hotel which was considered very upper class and modern. And it remains modern, with all the latest facilities and features expected of a 2013 establishment. All bedrooms have private bathrooms and colour televisions, radio, direct dial telephones, a hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. For conference organisers the Station Hotel has a range of suites able to accommodate events for 2 - 250 people and also provides screen and projector hire, e-commerce connections, morning coffee and biscuits, lunches, afternoon tea and a set price evening meal menu.
Whether it’s newly-weds celebrating their big day, representatives gathering for an important conference or travellers happy to find a home from home within such a short reach of the motorway network, the Station Hotel, in Castle Hill, meets their every need.
For happy couples, again, nothing is too much trouble. There are plans to gain a civil marriage licence so that weddings can be held on site but, for now, the Station Hotel has offers various packages to ensure that once the bride and groom arrive for their reception, its professional team are on hand to ensure the celebration is second to none. Says Helen: “A stay at the Station Hotel in historic Dudley means you can experience the tradition of the Black Country, but enjoy all the latest comforts that today’s modern traveller and discerning diner requires.” For further information about the hotel, its conference and wedding packages, to make a reservation or book a restaurant table, go to www.stationhoteldudley.co.uk Alternatively telephone 01384 253418 or email sales stationhoteldudley.co.uk
With Dudley Zoo opposite, the Black Country Museum mere minutes away, as is the famed Merry Hill Shopping Centre, this comfortable hotel is also the perfect base for a weekend in the historic Black Country. You don’t even have to be a resident to enjoy its embracing hospitality. The Lounge bar serves a wide variety of beers while the restaurant produces inspired and creative menus featuring the finest ingredients and seasonal produce. “Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two or a banquet for large groups, we will be delighted to welcome you,” says General Manager Helen Clay.

The beautiful 4-star Quorn Country Hotel, part of the Prima Group, is set among the Leicestershire countryside, just outside Loughborough. The 17thcentury listed building exudes elegance with an oakpanelled reception hall, a wide wooden staircase, high ceilings and magnificent chandeliers.
The hotel offers 36 large air conditioned bedrooms featuring bespoke furniture and ample en suite accommodation, including 11 executive rooms and 4 suites ideal for business travellers and families. Visitors can enjoy a meal in the AA Rosette Shires Restaurant, a scrumptious Sunday lunch or afternoon tea in the delightful Orangery. The comfortable lounge area, tastefully furnished with classic elegant décor, is the perfect retreat to relax and unwind. Quorn Country Hotel is proud to welcome their new Head Chef, Lloyd Roper. Lloyd is 28 and trained at Henley College in Coventry. He has gained some solid experience working in a number of very demanding kitchens, and has built an excellent reputation for such a young chef. Within just 3 months of his joining Quorn Country Hotel they retained their AA rosette for culinary excellence. Lloyd says that he has always loved to cook, and specialises in classic British cuisine with a modern twist, for example his Trio of Lamb cooked three ways. The dish comprises braised leg, pan roasted cutlet, and kebabs formed from the shoulder.
Lloyd is thrilled the hotel retained its AA Rosette. He explained that they were not even aware they had been visited and judged until afterwards. The rosettes are very prestigious and require all dishes to be fresh, seasonal, homemade and perfectly executed. Lloyd and the team are aiming for the accolade of three rosettes next year. To avoid disappointment booking is highly recommended if you would like to make a dinner reservation. Christmas functions will be taking place throughout December. This 4 star country retreat, perfectly situated on the banks of the River Soar in the charming village of Quorn, offers warm country house hospitality, personal and friendly service and award winning cuisine within a delightfully historical setting.

Do you remember having to wait in for a delivery? Giving up four or five hours just so you can be there to sign for a doorstep arrival?
Growth is now speeding up as traditional carriers and new entrants develop better models to meet home shopping and consumer demand, it reports.
And, oh, the frustration of ‘wasted time’ when it turned up two minutes before the final cut-off time - and rage when it never turned up at all.
E-commerce has driven the merging of the three main segments: business-tobusiness, business-to-consumer and consumer/small business-consigned parcels, which once were traditionally seen as separate markets, served by different providers.
The last 10 years or so have pretty much seen an end to all that, thanks to the rise and rise of the internet and ever evolving technology. Those developments have been accompanied by the globalisation of world markets and more relaxed border restrictions allowing easier transportation of goods between countries. And that’s good not just for the international business-to-international business market. Today, even domestic householders think nothing of sitting down with their computer/tablet/Smartphone to purchase an item from the other side of the world and be ready to sign for it on their own doorstep a week or two sometimes days - later. The effect on the delivery industry has been profound, and many sector experts predict there are still more changes to come, bringing benefits for deliverers and consumers alike. The recent fly in the ointment has been, of course, the economic downturn. However recent studies from Apex Insight, an independent provider of research, analysis and consulting services, are indicating a brighter outlook for the UK’s £8bn parcels market.
With the rise and rise of home shopping making an increasingly attractive market, business carriers such as UPS, City Link and UK Mail have turned their attention to the area while consumer-focused carriers like Yodel have invested in systems and sought business customers. There has also been the development of new services by both carriers and third parties, such as internet brokers and parcel shop networks, to give consumers and small businesses a much wider range of services. Home shopping has fuelled growth in the business-to-consumer segment throughout the last decade as penetration of broadband, smartphones and tablet computers has risen. The challenge for operators has been to develop a model to serve home deliveries profitably, so they can obtain exposure to this growth segment – which now represents almost a quarter of the market – without damaging their overall economics and impacting service levels for premium business-to-business customers. The fact that even the big international courier delivery companies are doing it by adapting their services, providing flexible delivery options and offering real-time tracking as the norm shows just what the potential for this segment is. Such a radical shift has also come about by happy circumstance. A few years ago the technology to integrate tracking and transport modes with online systems which can be instantly updated according to circumstances didn’t even exist.
If yesteryear’s customer even contemplated ordering an item from abroad, or was faced with sending one overseas, it meant days - even weeks - of not knowing what had happened to that shipment once it had been waved off from the appropriate shore, and no confidence that it would arrive at its destination. Nowadays, even a smartphone can track a package from warehouse to courier van heading for delivery while text messages or phone calls can bring advance warning that the goods are “30 minutes away” from the final destination. Further home shopping-driven change has also seen ‘lifestyle couriers’ become a force to be recognised within the industry. Self-employed drivers now make up between 5-8% of UK logistics workers, with this type of courier - someone using their own car and spare time - recording one of the most rapid expansions in the group. Individuals who, out of choice or necessity, spend varying amounts of time each week delivering parcels, usually around their immediate neighbourhoods, have always been part of the sector but it’s the rise of the internet that has seen their numbers boom. Anyone who orders home deliveries from a wide range of well-known online, catalogue and high street retailers will find more often than not that while somewhere on the label a name like Yodel will be present; the package will come to their doorstep fresh out of the boot of someone’s car. Possibly even someone they know. It’s not hard to see how online retail has changed the courier industry significantly but as our home shopping preference grows and technology keeps evolving it’s clear we’re far from the end of the transition.

The LMS-Patriot Project Creating the new Royal British Legion endorsed National Memorial Engine C When ‘The Unknown Warrior’, the new London Midland and Scottish Railway designed Patriot locomotive steams into the platform in 2018, it will represent a unique tribute to the British, Commonwealth and Irish service personnel who fell in the wars of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Locomotive assembly began in 2009, led by Dave Owen, CME at the Llangollen Railway Works. Other workshops are involved including Boro Foundry, South Devon Railway, LNWR Heritage, Coupe Foundry, Tyseley Locomotive Works and other West Midland engineering companies.. Others involved are Smethwick’s Premier Patterns, who have used modern methods to make the polystyrene pattern for a number of castings including the engine’s middle cylinder. The project has also used more traditional wood patternmaking methods from Master Patternmaker Eddie Mocroft.

Picture courtesy - David Anderson It will also stand as a beacon of excellence, passion and dedication to the railway enthusiasts and members of the public who helped to fund what’s become known as the National Memorial Engine, and to those who combined their 21st century expertise and technology with traditional skills to build an engine right out of the Golden Age of Steam. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the Unknown Warrior will be officially unveiled just over 10 years after David Bradshaw and Steam Railway launched the £1.5million LMS-Patriot scheme.

With work is now at the halfway stage, members of the public will be able to get a glimpse of what’s to come when the locomotive is exhibited in the Warley Model Railway Exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC on November 23/24th. The 3-cylinder Patriot class was introduced in 1930 and saw use until 1962 when the last two unrebuilt examples were scrapped. The Unknown Warrior is being constructed to the original parallel boiler design and will be able to run on today’s mainline. Backed by the Royal British Legion, its memorial status is in keeping with the original objective of the L&NWR Claughton class memorial engine named ‘Patriot’ until withdrawn in1934. Its name was transferred to the first of the LMS ‘Baby Scot’ class No 5500 and the class became the ‘Patriot’ class.

Hybrids are not new, but almost every production model on sale today uses batteries to store its energy. Flybrid has designed and developed its system as a battery-free method of storing kinetic energy while the vehicle brakes, which can then be used to reduce the load on the engine during acceleration, resulting in better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.
When it comes to growth, Flybrid Automotive, on the Silverstone Technology Park, has had a certain drive of its own, ever since 2007 when Jon Hilton and Doug Cross invested their own money in founding the business to develop a working demonstration KERS at high speed.
52
Proud of its work in delivering the first hybrid car to race at Le Mans in 2011, as well as successful flywheel KERS prototype cars with Volvo, Jaguar and others, the company is now focused on a project with Wright Group, with a new flywheel hybrid bus due to make its test track debut in 2014.
Accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2008
Having gone on to build several systems for motorsport, Flybrid is also pretty hot on delivering additional performance.
Now the award-winning company is working with the Wright Group, the company behind the New Bus for London, to produce a flywheel KERS Midi-bus and expanding its manufacturing facilities to meet the anticipated demand.
“And we’ve tackled the skills shortage by taking on talented engineering graduates, and training them to work with the unique technical challenges of the flywheel system.”

A Northamptonshire company’s mechanical alternative to electric hybrid systems for cars is getting the motoring industry all in a spin.

Langstone Engineering Ltd offer Toolmaking & Precision Engineering Services as well as Prototype Engineering & Component Manufacture. Work undertaken for: - F1/Motor Sports, Medical, Automotive, Rubber/Plastic, Aeronautical, Marine & Defence Industries etc. Its first contract was with a factory F1 team to design a F1-spec KERS, but a rules change meant the groundbreaking system never made it to the track. However, the design and development work proved its worth when Jaguar commissioned its own custom-designed KERS unit, FHSPV (Flywheel Hybrid System for Premium Vehicles). After that, enquiries for new applications kept coming, enabling Flybrid to grow to its now 20-man team, move to its current premises and establish a manufacturing facility to build and test each application’s innovative system. It’s not been an easy road. Commercial Manager Tobias Knichel acknowledges trying to convince a market which has invested heavily in hybrid electric vehicles has been one challenge - while seeking a constant supply of experienced engineers and designers has been another. Calling all Midlands garages and bodyshops, Perrys of Huddersfield, are offering next day, am, delivery of genuine parts from fifteen franchises to customers in Birmingham.
At any one time the company holds £2 million pounds of genuine parts in stock and their 12 fully trained telephone operators have the expertise to help and advise across the range.
As part of the next stage of their planned expansion the company will be taking on some new franchises this year including Chrysler / Jeep / Kia / Chevrolet / Landrover.
Perrys operate a multifranchise call centre covering 15 different manufacturers and deliver genuine car and van parts across the UK.
Robert Lightowler, General Parts Manager, explained that one of the greatest challenges that any supplier of genuine manufacturer parts faces is competition from non-genuine parts. Such parts are always a false economy, and their use frequently results in a damaged vehicle that will cost a great deal more than the initial saving to repair, especially in light of Perrys’ competitive discount structure.
Perrys are rapidly developing into one of the largest wholesale distribution centres working with a multitude of manufacturers and providing a parts distribution network across the UK.
Since being established in 2000 with just 3 vans and 11 staff, the company has grown to 50 employees and has 23 vans busily delivering genuine parts promptly to businesses all over the country.

Backed up by their fully equipped workshop with factory trained mechanics to ensure all service and repair work is undertaken to the highest possible standard, their genuine Suzuki Parts and Accessories department offers an unmatched service by fast mail-order or over the counter in our showroom.
56
Hardly surprising then that Redcar Motorcycles has maintained steady growth and a long standing, loyal customer base. But Redcar Motorcycles is also the ideal place to go for a “first bike”, the team are all enthusiastic bikers, but their familiarity with the top end enthusiast models doesn’t mean that any of them have forgotten their early experiences and they still can relate to the needs of those new to motorcycling.. You can be sure that the bike you buy from Redcar will be the best choice for your requirements, experience and budget, and that they will always be there to service and support you throughout your biking career

Quality Joinery at a Competitive Price Wood, beautiful real wood, is synonymous with quality. In an age when plastics appear to rule, traditional craft and workmanship are kept alive by companies such as TM Joinery, where customers can still acquire the timeless finish and classic style that wooden fittings epitomise. Established in 1981 T.M. Joinery has built a fine reputation for quality work and service, both in keeping to appointments and finishing within the deadlines arranged with customers. The majority of their work is purpose made architectural joinery, doors, windows, door frames and stairs, as well as conservatories and porches. Unlike many firms in the marketplace, who rely on UPVC and pre-fabricated parts, they fashion all their tailor made products out of premium quality timber. This is not to say that T.M. Joinery has not kept pace with the changing times. They also do supply and fit UPVC items off the shelf if required, including items from well known names such as Magnet, Boulton & Paul, John Carr and STP. Ted Szaban started T.M. Joinery on 01/02/1981 in his garage at home using the skills he developed while serving a 4 year apprenticeship at J & R Perrin Ltd, from leaving school. Always passionate about wood and what can be achieved, since that cold February of 1981, his small solo operation has prospered and grown into the modern day T.M. Joinery, a thriving business with a fine reputation for quality work and service.

Raymond R. Bills, founder of Arbil and The Bills Group, had this to say of the company’s achievements over the past 50 years, “When I set out in business back in 1963, I could not have imagined how far we would advance over the subsequent 50 years. We now employ in excess of 80 people over five sites, with as many again supplying us with their engineered products and services. The organisation is proud to be recognised as being one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and distributors of specialist lifting equipment across rail, construction and automotive sectors.”
Arbil Limited Celebrates its 50th Trading Year Anniversary Local Black Country employer; Arbil Limited, who manufacture and distribute specialist lifting equipment, rail maintenance equipment and 4x4 off-road accessories, celebrates its milestone 50th trading year. Arbil opened its manufacturing doors back in June 1963, when it initially began trading under the name Raymond R. Bills (Cradley) Ltd, supplying chain and marine fittings to chandlers in the South West, along with servicing lifting gear and specialist jacking equipment to local industry and the rail sector. Starting out as a self-employed individual, the company’s founder, Raymond R. Bills, quickly expanded the team to include a number of site maintenance engineers, who all worked out of the company’s first site in Wolverhampton. The company was also amongst the first in the lifting gear industry to venture into the hiring out of equipment; with the hire department that began in the mid 60’s still thriving today from its own bespoke premises in Lye and through its regional branches.
Bills continued, “Of all the investments made during the last five decades, none can compare to those in the people who have, and still work for the organisation. I am delighted that my son, Tim Bills, who now heads the organisation, shares the same passions. This milestone gives me the opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all my fellow workers, customers and suppliers.” In recent years Arbil has continued to diversify and in addition to its core strengths in the manufacture, sale, hire and servicing of lifting gear and rail maintenance equipment; it now also supplies a host of off-road accessories through its dedicated 4x4/Automotive business: Arbil 4x4, which is the official importer for the UK and Ireland for leading 4x4 brands such as ARB® and WARN®. To mark this milestone achievement Arbil Limited are holding several staff, supplier and customer events. Stephanie Bergin, Arbil’s head of marketing commented,
Company Founder Raymond Bills Today, after being incorporated as Arbil Limited in 1996; Arbil has expanded to five fully owned sites, including two in Lye, where its Head Office is located, one in both Cradley Heath and Coventry and one site in Bristol to service its southern based customers. Arbil now boasts over 70,000 square feet of manufacturing, warehousing and distribution space, and exports throughout the world.

£20,000 per year. “Despite our hardware being relatively new, it was clear that with CPiO taking care of our IT via Ardent 24, its hosted managed service, the business would be substantially better off.”
cpio West Midlands based company, Arbil Limited, goes hosted with Ardent 24 from CPiO Arbil Limited, a member of the Bills group, is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of lifting, winching and jacking equipment in the UK. A longstanding CPiO customer, Arbil Limited has used Sage for over a decade. However, the company’s stand alone Sage Line 500 and Saleslogix systems did not offer a tight enough level of integration and employees were reluctant to use Saleslogix.
Arbil chose to move forward with the Ardent 24 hosted managed service as its method of deployment, signing a 3 year contract. With Ardent 24 the company is constantly working with the latest software applications and operating systems and experiencing optimal performance levels. Arbil is safe in the knowledge that any worries around hardware updates, system back-ups or security have been taken out of its hands. The hosted managed service from CPiO has streamlined Arbil’s business processes and provided financial predictability. Management of the companies’ IT system is all taken care of by Ardent 24 and the fixed price per user, per month enables Arbil to budget accordingly. Simon concludes, “The longevity of our relationship with CPiO is testament to their excellent level of customer service, knowledge and understanding and overall commitment to clients. I would recommend CPiO to any business looking to either implement Sage on premise or as a hosted managed solution.”

Arbil recognised the need for a companywide CRM solution and its proper use throughout the business. Following a thorough review of its existing business system, Arbil opted to implement Sage ERP 1000 with Sage CRM. Simon Hart, Director at Arbil Limited explains the company’s reasoning behind this decision. “In order to encourage all staff to buy into and fully utilize a CRM system, a complete software refresh was required. A new Sage ERP 1000 with Sage CRM solution would help employees to see the ERP and CRM system as a complete package and ultimately increase efficiencies.” Having reaped the benefits of upgrading its software solution; seeing greater consistency throughout the organisation and more streamlined processes, Arbil began to investigate how further cost savings could be gained. Extensive consultancy with CPiO offered Arbil the opportunity to explore hosting. “CPiO and its Ardent 24 team were very patient and thorough, taking the time to explain exactly what a hosted managed service is – something which we had previously heard of but struggled to fully understand. The consultants demonstrated exceptional knowledge and offered a great deal of valuable advice which significantly aided the decision making process.” By reorganising the business; restructuring employees and consolidating processes, Arbil would see cost savings of over

However, Wilmat has seen renewed interest in British-made equipment as customers realise the benefits of dealing with a home-based manufacturer. It has been fiercely encouraging others to to ‘Buy British,’ not least through its recently published report highlighting attitudes towards British manufacturing that found, contrary to popular belief, the UK market can offer more opportunities for growth than purely concentrating on exports.
Fifty years in business have resulted in gold-plated service and sparkling sales for its Diamond range of products. Fittingly for such a special anniversary year, 2013 has been full of such milestone moments, reports Managing Director Teresa Hands. “At the turn of the year we registered record sales figures and more recently saw more than £75,000-worth of new orders for our Diamond Stacker range, which has become one of our biggest sellers,” she adds.
As to be expected, with a half century of experience, it’s not the first time Wilmat has experienced harsh times but its expertise, quality of service and products has always seen it through. Established in 1963 the company grew through nearly two decades manufacturing hand, battery lift and power driven stacking trucks, industrial trucks and trailers until 1980 when recession forced retraction. Two years on and growth began again and in 2008 Teresa, with Chairman Roger Williams and Technical Director Andrew Capella, led a management buyout.
“Futhermore, we recently introduced updates to our Bulldog range and also invested in the design team with the appointment of two new designers.” The developments are good news for the Birmingham company, which designs and manufactures a wide range of materials handling products, primarily pedestrian stackers and mobile lifting equipment but also industrial fork lifts, tow tractors, scissor lift tables, prime movers, cranes, mould / die handlers and platform trucks. It also produces bespoke equipment for customers operating in a wide range of business sectors and operates service, hire and used equipment departments. “The past few years have been tough for all businesses, particularly in the manufacturing sector,” says Teresa. “Many have found it difficult to access finance, making them reluctant to invest in new equipment. This has had a knock-on effect, while an influx of imported equipment from the Far East, initially put pressure on UK firms like us.”

The second is cause for even more delight as it’s rarely given - the Best in Practice award for the site’s root-cause analysis technique. “Such a technique has high importance in the automotive sector and shows that we truly excel in this area,” adds Wayne.
Distribution Massive prize-winning investment levels, increased range of stock, accreditations awarded and new staff on the way - that’s Benteler Distribution Ltd in action when the economy’s not at full strength.
“The plant’s catalogue of successes since opening in 2011 is equipping Benteler Distribution with the ability to compete with increasing effectiveness and look to the future with justified optimism.” Benteler Distribution is part of Germany’s Benteler Group, which employs 30,000 people across 170 plants, locations, and warehouses in 38 countries.
And when it is - well the UK’s largest carbon and stainless steel tube stockholder and processor will be more than ready. Says Keith Rammell, Automotive Product Manager: “Benteler is investing in equipment, people and accreditations, unlike many other companies in the same sector, so that we are ready for when the overall economy improves. “We have plans to double our existing capacity, enabling us to compete evermore successfully with confidence.” Nowhere is this more evident than at Benteler’s West Bromwich unit where the operations workforce has been doubled and fully trained up to meet the need for a multi-skilled unit. Here is where the global organisation’s investment of £1m in warehouse facilities and £2m in new processing equipment was recognised at last year’s Made in the Midlands ceremony in the form of the a Manufacturing Achievement Award for Investment in Business.
More than just a stockholder of stainless steel tubes and sections, automotive and hydraulic products, its additional services include multi-cutting, deburring (including 100% length inspection inline) and washing. The West Bromwich warehouse is one of several strategically placed throughout the UK, and using its own transport fleet and trunking system, stocks are generally nationwide within 72 hours, with next-day deliveries arranged for urgent requirements.

At Energy Tubes we manufacture the highest quality tubes from stainless steel, nickel alloys and titanium to meet a wide range of specifications.
The purpose-built factory at Delta Point houses a 38,000sq ft warehouse and processing plant, enabling it to add an increased capacity for stocking stainless tube and sections, cylinder tube and chrome bar to its vast carbon range. New equipment brought in includes a RSA Rasacut Multi-cut machine and, significantly, one of only two in the UK, a Rattunde ACS102. Wayne Bagnall, Regional Sales Manager, explains: “This machine has end finishing capabilities (facing and chamfering), enabling us to offer an almost finished part to clients, a service increasingly important in the current economic climate, especially in the automotive sector.” Now, within just 12 months, the West Bromwich site has two important accreditations. The first is TUV ISO 9001(2008) Matrix, a globally recognised standard requiring rigorous assessments in Health and Safety, environmental regulations and product quality. Wayne says its an impressive achievement reflecting the operations and sales teams’ continued hard work and dedication.

DiamondBox Award-winning packaging manufacturer Diamond Box is making good on its commitment to continued investment - to the tune of £3million. It may have been born in a recession, but that has never swayed it from always obtaining the latest cutting-edge equipment to ensure its product is the sparkling jewel in the corrugated packaging crown and one that stands out from the rest. It’s a go-getting approach which has seen the West Bromwich business trump one of the toughest economic climates in a lifetime. From its 2007 launch, it’s boomed to an annual turnover of more than £20million and swept up several awards along the way. Having netted the Wolverhampton Express and Star Business of the Year, BCABA Business Person of the Year and Business of the Year at the English Asian Business Awards in 2013 alone, it has been shortlisted for Packaging News’ Packaging Company of the Year, with the result to be unveiled at in a ceremony at the prestigious Hilton Hotel, London, in November. At the same time, Diamond Box is gearing itself for greater productivity and expansion as it actions the latest items from that multi-million pound shopping list. A newly installed Bobst 5 Colour High Quality Printer will see it expand into areas such as high quality post-print and the value added market, and it is about to install a Latitude Case-maker.
Both machines help to consolidate Diamond Box’s place as the market leading independently owned manufacturer and major supplier of corrugated packaging within the UK, Managing Director Kavi Jundu is in no doubt that his company’s rapid growth marks its greatest success, reiterating the determination to cut a swathe through all the challenges presented by tough trading conditions. “As a business we realised that the economic downturn was good for us. Diamond Box was born within the recession and had no choice but to cope and thrive in that environment,” he declares. “We learned to listen to our customers wants and needs and discovered that even though the economy is in turmoil, there was still scope for independent companies to grow and prosper.” And Diamond Box has done just that since Kavi, much of whose career was spent in a family corrugated manufacturing business, and his wife Rani established the company after spotting a gap in the market. It offers anything from conventional 0201 cases to five-colour shelfready packaging, small and large format die-cutting, and complex multipoint cases with self-seal tape, along with full range of services from initial consultancy to timed delivery. “We have established strong and enduring relationships with key strategic partners in custom and supply and those with suppliers enable us to source high quality raw materials,” says Kavi. “We also have a dedicated design team producing high quality drawings to customers’ requirements while our fleet of nine articulated vehicles enables flexibility and ensures that they get what they want, when they want it.”

Supplying steel and aluminium parts to the automotive industry for over 50 years, Sertec was founded in 1962 by Harry Mosedale.
are particularly keen to talk to people with the relevant expertise in automotive processes. They need an extra 250 staff members, just on the back of JLR’s recent much trumpeted expansion. Sertec are a tier one supplier to Jaguar Land Rover, and as they supply components for every single model at JLR, their fortunes are quite closely linked. The inexorable rise of JLR has been a very good thing for Sertec and indeed for the whole automotive supply industry. Steve Morley, Operations Director at Sertec Tube and Pressings, spoke recently to the BBC News Channel about JLR’s announcement of investment and new job creation, saying that “whilst it is great news for the future of the supply chain with new models coming on stream, the skills shortage remains the same”
The company’s first contract was with the Triumph Motor Company at Speke in Liverpool. Harry, having only recently opened his doors in Aston Birmingham, approached Triumph to see what he could do for them, they said “Come back tomorrow with a van, we’ll give you some tools and the metal, then bring the parts back to us by the end of next week.” Harry had them ready and delivered by the next day!
The company has a very active apprenticeship programme across all departments and as they have a policy of recruiting for attitude and then training for skills, Sertec will take young people from a wide range of academic backgrounds. While some of their new recruits have degrees, others have a more chequered academic history, but still often achieve excellent results.

This story set the standard, and remains the company’s ethos to this day, to exceed their customers’ expectations. It is all about attitude and determination, in the early days Harry even slept at the factory on some occasions to make sure that the right products went out right on time. Harry is now 82 years old and still takes a keen interest in the business and its progress. Harry’s son Graham took over as MD at the age of only 27 in 1986, while the present Group MD, Grant Adams, joined the company in 1985 and has worked alongside Graham ever since. At that time, the annual turnover stood at 2.5 million, this year they confidently expect to achieve 135 million and to reach 200 million by 2018. In 2006 Grant Adams, Dave Steggles, and Martyn Hughes staged a management buyout, which saw a new board, under the Chairmanship of Graham Mosedale along with his sister Racheal Jessop, all hugely experienced in their respective fields and all with Sertec coursing through their veins. The directors see themselves as the proud custodians of Sertec’s traditions and have maintained the company’s core values and beliefs. They are extremely proud of their loyal workforce and hope that in time, new leaders will come forward to carry on the tradition, and Sertec will be able to give them the same opportunity to run the business. Grant Adams explained to us that Sertec are in the middle of a major recruitment drive, and have positions open at all levels, from apprentices, to hourly paid workers up to managers, and

massive extra 120,000 square ft. with an additional 45,000 sq ft of space available to be built on for further expansion.
Grant Adams started his own career in automotive as a British Leyland apprentice and now as Group MD, still finds the time to personally monitor each apprentice as they move through the company, he is currently mentoring about fourteen apprentices.
This site will become the new Sertec Group Headquarters in 2014. The building will be known as Wincaster House, taking its name from the original Sertec site in Wincaster Way, Aston. The board are also making significant capital investment in plant and machinery, of approximately £15 million over and above their new facilities during the next few years. The huge investments being made in plant and equipment to secure the future of the Company, was a major factor in winning the Business Masters Award for Manufacturing in the Midlands for the second year running. The annual event run by Businesdesk.com celebrates and recognises the achievements of the region’s most successful businesses and entrepreneurs. After collecting the award Sertec’s delighted Chairman, Graham Mosedale said, “On the back of last year’s win I believe this is recognition from the business community of how we are seen to maintain growth, create more employment, and continue to ensure quality performance in manufacturing for the automotive industry. We all work tremendously hard at Sertec to support such global brands as Range Rover, Jaguar and Scania with manufacturing excellence. It is very satisfying to be held again in such high esteem”.
Sertec operates from five manufacturing facilities in the West Midlands; they have retained the original Aston premises, but also operate from two sites in Coleshill, including their head office, the previous DPE Automotive site in Tyseley which was acquired in 2011, and a further site in Saltley. Their pan European facilities include a factory in Estonia situated on the Baltic coast, conveniently situated to supply parts to some of their major customers in Sweden, Scania trucks and Volvo.
Further recognition for this progressive company came on 16th June with the simultaneous presentation of two more major awards. Chairman, Graham Mosedale, and Group Finance Director, Martyn Hughes, attended the Sunday Times PWC Profit Track 100 Awards2013, in London, where they collected the trophy for Best Customer Service, beating other finalists, Pret a Manger and Unipart to the award, which was sponsored by Lloyds banking.
The company also has an office in China, employing about 20 people who project manage the manufacture of over 1000 press tools each year for Sertec’s requirements to fulfil new vehicle model programmes. Further expansion plans will see the imminent takeover of an additional site in Coleshill, previously occupied by Greenwoods Telecommunications; the new premises will give them a

Meanwhile back in Birmingham at the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, Grant Adams was awarded the accolade of Midlands Entrepreneur of the Year in the Manufacturing category. The Sunday Times Profit Track 100 recognises Britain’s 100 private companies with the fastest growing profits, based on the latest three years available accounts. Due in no small part to the tremendous success of Sertec’s main customer JLR the company has recorded growth of 119% per annum and has risen to 9th place in the Profit Track 100 table. Given that only 12 months previously, although listed as “one to watch” the company fell outside the 100, this is a terrific achievement for Sertec. Martyn Hughes said that he was particularly pleased by the award because, “It is a true and accurate reflection of our achievement. The figures don’t lie, and our financial performance over the last three years compares extremely well against other businesses. It is very satisfying to be recognised for a great deal of hard work.” Graham Mosedale put the company’s success down to quality performance and a determination to succeed, and acknowledged the vital contribution the strong management team has made to the company’s growth. Grant Adams was thrilled by his award, and also paid tribute to all his colleagues, saying, “I am absolutely delighted to receive this award, and it is down to the team at Sertec that I am in such a privileged position to have won. We have worked so hard, not only to maintain standards, but to invest in plant technology and good people to improve quality to the higher level demanded by our major customers. It has been a dramatic few years of late, and I am just glad I am part of Sertec.”

PP Premier Patterns & Castings From a giant Lady Gaga seated at a piano to walls, bridges, boat hulls, car panels and even a massive ant leg or two, Premier Patterns & Castings has made them all. But even these fade in comparison with the Smethwick company’s involvement in a moving UK project to build a National Memorial steam engine in time for the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Armstice.
They have also made other smaller patterns for the engine and in early 2014 will be making the patterns for the outside cylinders. David Bradshaw, the Chairman of the LMS- Patriot Project says: Since first making contact with directors Andrew Timmins and Richard Irwin late last year we have found them a real pleasure to work with.
“They display everything from old-fashioned courtesy to a full understanding of what we require to build The Unknown Warrior. They are flexible, efficient, deliver to time and run an extremely efficient high tech operation. We have recommended them to a number of other groups building and repairing steam locomotives and traction engines and will continue to do so.”
Premier Patterns, which also supplies castings to some of biggest names in the automotive industry, is involved with the cross-country creation of the LMS Patriot locomotive. The Unknown Warrior is being made to the original Sir Henry Fowler parallel boiler design, and will be capable of running on the mainline. It will serve as a permanent memorial to those who fought and died in the First World War and subsequent wars. Working from old designs converted to modern Computer Aided Design images, the Premier Patterns experts have used modern methods to make the polystyrene pattern for the engine’s middle cylinder casting. Originally the pattern would have been made of wood.
76
For Premier Patterns, the project is probably one of the most poignant in a 17 year history that has incorporated a vast range of clients’ requirements. Its high quality bespoke pattern making and castings, along with its sophisticated use of CAD CAM technology are sought after by not just the likes of Ford, Honda and Aston Martin and Rolls Royce, but the big names of the marine and aerospace sectors.

delivery methods, developing nanoparticles for inclusion in paints and coatings, and even growing tooth enamel in the laboratory! Adding to the portfolio Since its foundation in the 1970s Malvern Instruments has grown and diversified. Acquisitions over the past decade have brought new technologies and capabilities, and the addition of the highly successful NanoSight extends this still further.
Extending analysis at the nanoscale Worcestershire-based Malvern Instruments is a UK success story. A leading developer, manufacturer and net exporter of high-technology scientific instruments, the company is known around the world for the quality of its products and the expert support it provides to its customers.
“NanoSight is a real entrepreneurial success story and I am delighted to welcome the NanoSight team to Malvern,” said Malvern Managing Director Paul Walker. “NanoSight has grown every year since it was established in 2002 and has ambitious plans for the future. We will be providing the investment and support needed to continue this drive forward and are committed to developing the NanoSight brand within the Malvern portfolio.”
In September Malvern acquired UK company NanoSight Ltd. This move adds new technology and products to Malvern’s existing solutions for measuring materials and biological particles at the nanoscale. One nanometre equals one billionth of a metre. Working at this scale scientists need a choice of specialised technologies from which to select the most suitable for their materials.

Solutions for industry and academia The instruments that Malvern provides help solve many industrial and manufacturing challenges, at every scale. They measure the physical and chemical properties of a wide range of materials, from medicines to metal powders, foodstuffs to fuels. Nanotechnology, however, is an advancing field of considerable interest. While the terms ‘nanomaterials’ and ‘nanotechnology’ have only now Malvern’s Zetasizer Nano is a become part of world-leading system for characterizing everyday language, nanoparticles Malvern has long provided instruments that measure the size and properties of nanoscale materials. Its Zetasizer Nano systems are world leaders that are used in work as wide-ranging as improving drinking water treatment, creating novel drug
NanoSight has developed and commercialised a unique and patented technology, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA). Explaining the product fit, Paul Walker continued, “NanoSight’s technology has become accepted in laboratories around the world and is widely cited in research publications. With rapid advances in nanomaterials and the life sciences, especially in biopharmaceuticals, there is great demand for new measurement systems. This is a very exciting time and by bringing together complementary, leading edge technologies, Malvern continues to focus on delivering the analytical tools which laboratories urgently need.” Jeremy Warren, CEO of NanoSight, agreed, saying, “We have always seen Malvern as the clear leader in our sector. The plans we have are ambitious and exciting, and the support and reach of the Malvern organisation will allow us to grow more rapidly than we could alone. I am sure that this change will bring opportunity to both our business and our colleagues. Malvern is our natural home.” Going forward NanoSight will continue to operate from its current facilities in Amesbury, Wiltshire. Malvern’s direct sales operations and wider global presence will make NanoSight instruments and aftersales support even more accessible to a wider market.
