& EXHIBITIONS LTD
After 25 years in business, the company can draw on a bank of experience that can handle every requirement, seeing much of its work generated through referrals and high levels of repeat business. Some clients have been with Graphics and Exhibitions for 15 years.
Digital Printing - Signs Portable Display Systems - Exhibitions EVERY time Johnathan Ross welcomes a big star guest onto his TV show, Nigel Carter and Stephen Williams can look past the Hollywood glitterati and beam with satisfaction.
“We achieved this by producing a stretch canvas with a high quality latex print that was nearly three metres square - with no joins!”
While much of its graphic design and printing work demonstrates a countrywide customer base, Nigel is proud of the business’s renowned sign manufacturing, with retail signs featuring prominently, particularly across the city.
For behind the showbiz superstars, and seen by millions every week, is the studio illuminated backdrop which Graphics and Exhibitions helped to design and create.
It was one of the most prestigious projects tackled this year by the digital graphics and signs manufacturing company base in Kingswood Bristol, their work is seen across the country and in Europe.
The Port Marine development at Portishead, the Kings Chase Shopping Centre, the Cheddar Garden Centre - all the impressive signs greeting visitors were made by Nigel and his team.
Working with a range of partner business, Graphics and Exhibitions has undertaken work for clients such as Ford, Jaguar, Santander and Microsoft and is also established on the city business scene due to its signage work.
“We have produced many stunning internal and external images at photographic quality, using eco-friendly inks that hold UV protection to stop them deteriorating over time,” says Nigel. “We recently printed a slate graphic applied to clear acrylic. The artwork quality from Ignition Strategic Design was so good that some people asked if it was real slate! A true testament to the high quality produced here.”
The range of its output, both in terms of quantity and geographical spread, is all the more remarkable as the staff consists of Nigel, newly appointed shareholder Stephen and three experienced professionals. But small is beautiful, they believe, saying: “We have made a conscious effort to stay small as we believe we can deliver a better, bespoke service. “During the many times when demand for our services is high, we have an extensive network of trusted freelancers to draw upon.” Based on the Douglas Road Business Park, in Bristol, Graphics and Exhibitions has been producing display graphics and signs since 1988. Be they roller banners, pop-up systems, exhibition stands, conference sets, and high Street signage, Nigel and his team work closely with clients to ensure they meet each brief - no matter how tricky. “We were challenged by World Market Travel in Bath to produce a Thailand scene to fill a back wall, but they didn’t

We have maintained this position in the market by following some golden rules of business, which probably apply to your business as well as ours: • We answer the telephone! We use text and email like you. We don’t send letters unless you need to sign something • We talk your language. Translating law into English is an imperative part of our job and one that we strive hard to deliver day in day out. If you are paying for advice, you have to understand it • If you want to do a deal then so do we. Our price certainty promise allows you to fix a fee with us upfront based on the description of the job in hand. In addition, we try to price ourselves competitively against other law firms in the market • We treat all levels of business with equal respect. For us, business means real people with real enterprises; not just the city’s big institutions. We act for as many tradesman as we do developers, contractors, investors, private companies charities and retailers • And finally, we are nice people! Why spend money with solicitors who you do not enjoy dealing with?

Bev James
CEO of The Coaching Academy and Director of Mentoring at Start-Up Loans
When is the right time to expand your Business? It is a fact of life that any successful and well run business is going to grow and expand over time – both in terms of staff numbers, the demands on the business and most importantly of all, turnover and profit.
2. Is your current set-up flexible enough to cope with fluctuations in demand? When it comes to small firms in the early days of their development it can make a big difference to take a flexible approach to business. If you have staff who have the training and experience to carry out a number of different roles it means that people can easily adapt to cope with the changing demands of the business. 3. Can any jobs or tasks be outsourced to freelancers?
Bev James Every healthy company has to be allowed to develop and the key to growth is to successfully manage the process. Growing too quickly in the early years is unfortunately one of the most common reasons for business failure. I am a big believer in planning for success but when it comes to growth, deciding on a strategy may not be that simple and straightforward. The reality is that each business is very different and there is no one size strategy that can be used when it comes to managing business expansion. Expansions can be a part of a well thought out strategy but it can also sneak up on you simply through organic growth or increased demand for the services and products you are providing. When it comes to organic growth, expansion can happen quite naturally as you gradually take on more resources to deal with increasing demands and pressures. One by one your team can grow as you recruit new staff to deal with the extra work, and before you know it the business has doubled in size. For small businesses, this type of organic growth and gradual expansion can be fairly easy to manage providing you have the right building blocks in place. Growth is all about striking the right balance and taking a measured approach. Here are just a few questions to take into account before you take the potentially expensive decision to expand your office or add new members to your team:
The world of work has become much more fluid and flexible as a result of the recession and the internet. There’s no such thing as a job for life in the current environment and more people are choosing to go down the freelance route. With a rapidly expanding market it makes perfect sense to take full advantage of this new reality. Using freelancers is not only cost effective it also offers greater flexibility for businesses. You can take on extra work as and when you need it and avoid the cost and hassle of taking on full-time staff. 4. Is everyone on your team working to their full capability? Perhaps the answer to increased workloads lies within the office itself rather than the external factors that affect your business. Sometimes it pays to take a close look at the way your outfit operates and how your team functions. Often you can improve performance and productivity simply by changing things around within the office. While some staff are being overstretched, others might not have enough work to keep them busy throughout the day. 5. Is the increase in demand for products or services seasonal and is it likely to continue? It always helps to take a long-term view when it comes to taking on new members of staff. Before rushing out into the recruitment sector, you need to ask how the business is performing and is there a pattern emerging? There is no point in taking new people on if the demand is only going to be short term. 6. Who can you go to for advice? Don’t try to navigate your business expansion alone, find a mentor or a coach who can offer support and guidance. When you are starting out on the expansion journey, it is always reassuring to get as much advice or support as you can about where you are heading. Bev James is a business mentor, best-selling author of DO IT! or DITCH IT, CEO of the Coaching Academy and Director of Mentoring at Start-Up Loans www.bevjames.com @Bev_James. You can explore DISC further by downloading Bev’s free business App DO IT! OR DITCH IT, with access to a DISC profile questionnaire and a free DISC guide.
1. In these days of fast developing technology do you need to take on extra staff to cope with demand? It might save time and money in the long run to invest in new technology rather than taking on new employees. A little bit of research into what is available on the technology market can save a lot of expense in the long run. Spending on new software or computers might actually be a better solution than taking on new staff.

S o H o Computer Doctors Ltd IT is a wonderful thing - until it doesn’t work. And for those small business owners and home office individuals who don’t have instant access to a clued-up support division of their company, that’s a terrifying prospect.
business owners get the best out of their technology and offers a whole range of training and support as a result. “Most small firms do not require an IT specialist in their offices permanently, but having someone come in once or twice a month or quarterly to check things over, answer any questions or do anything that may crop up can be very useful,” says James.
Its services include: • Network and internet security • Computer optimisation and speed up • Centralised management of anti-virus and backup solutions for server and PCs • Microsoft Exchange server setup and support • Secure wireless solutions • Remote access to office computers.
James Nott But such a scenario remains a mere ‘what if’ nightmare for the many Bristol firms who have turned to SoHo Computer Doctors for all their IT solutions and needs. Ever since James Nott moved to the city from London in 2007 and launched the company, SoHo (small-office, home-office) Computer Doctors has become the perfect remedy for increasing numbers of business people whose systems have suffered a whole range of ailments. Now it has a healthy base of repeat customers while new business grows daily, mainly on a word-of-mouth basis.
• Attaching devices to PCs. • Website and email hosting. Services are available on an hourly basis or customers can sign up to a range of packages offering monthly or annual support. Whatever the problem, James and his team are here to help and that can involve supporting those who help others, such as the Salvation Army. “We set up the development suite at the charity’s rehab residence home in the city,” he recalls. “This was a room with 10 desktop machines running Windows 7, managed by a Windows server and was to help residents with re-education, both on and offline. “Because of many of their backgrounds, security and monitoring was paramount so all internet use was monitored by the server, that acted as a proxy and content filter and if inappropriate content was accessed, it was flagged up on the daily report that was sent to one of the Salvation Army co-ordinators.”
If you need help or support from SoHo Computer Doctors, call the 24/7 number 0117 230 1272. For more information go to www.sohocd.com or email help@sohocd.com.
“We offer a wide range of computer support services, able to troubleshoot and repair nearly all problems and provide on going support seven days a week,” promises James. “There’s no call-out charge and no fee if we can’t fix it - but our technicians fix 99% of all problems on site within three hours.” It’s not all about getting the system back up as quickly as possible, though. Cyber Security Review
There’s a war going on in cyber space. The bad guys are after not just your money; they want your information, even your identity. The good guys are lining up to ensure that you and your data are safe. And you can do your bit. Whether as an individual or as a business there’s some basic steps to take to stop the thieves getting their digital hands on some of the £27bn per annum that cyber crime is estimated to cost the UK. The figures are daunting. According to a recent government report: •
•
•
Of the £27bn, £9.2bn comes from IP theft from UK businesses. The estimated economic cost of cyber crime to UK citizens is £3.1bn per annum, involving identity theft, online scams, scareware and fake anti-virus software. In the last year alone, 93% of large corporations and three quarters of small businesses are believed to have had a cyber breach. A study by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the Home Office found that 41% of FSB members fell victim to cyber crime in the last 12 months at an average cost of £4,000 per business. The most common threat was virus infections, with 20% affected.
So that’s the bad news, but the big fight back is going on. Last autumn Security Minister James Brokenshire launched the first phase of a £4million information security awareness drive, designed to educate businesses and consumers about rising hacker threats. It accompanied other established information initiatives, such as Get Safe Online, part of the government’s National Cyber Security Programme.
So what can you, as an individual, do to protect yourself? Sensible precautions include installing a firewall, regularly patching or updating software and using legitimate anti-virus software. It’s also possible to take out specialist insurance against the impact of identity theft. When purchasing online, check the site uses a secure server. This means the address starts with https instead of http, and you'll see a padlock symbol at the bottom of your browser. If you double click the padlock, it should reveal a digital certificate that confirms that the website is what it says it is. Of course, no bank or card issuer will email asking for personal and financial details online so report and then delete any message like this. Likewise delete emails from unknown sources without opening or clicking on attachments. Much of this holds true for businesses who are now advised to make information security part of their normal business risk management procedures, thus establishing set processes, expertise and a culture of readiness all aimed at countering the cyber crime threat. By achieving certain information security standards, a business can also demonstrate to customers that it has taken steps to protect itself and their digital information. ISO/IEC 27001 is said to offer a good basis for cyber security but needs reinforcing by practices to protect against cyber attacks, such as PAS 555:2013 which broadens the scope of processes beyond the technical to people, incorporating behaviour and physical security, as well as strategies for governance, leadership and culture.
There’s also further detailed strategic advice from CESG, the information security division of GCHQ, the Centre for the Protection of the National Infrastructure (CPNI) and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and the CSI.The FSB has a checklist worth following to protect a business. • • • • • • • • • •
Implement a combination of security protection solutions (anti-virus, antispam, firewall etc). Regular security updates on all software and devices. Implement a resilient password policy. Secure your wireless network. Implement clear and concise procedures for email, internet and mobile devices. Train staff in good security practices and consider employee background checks. Implement and test backup plans, information disposal and disaster recovery procedures. Carry out regular security risk assessments to identify important information and systems. Carry out regular security testing on the business website. Check provider credentials and contracts when using cloud services.
For those who feel barely able to add an attachment to an email before sending, this may seem like a somewhat daunting list but there is help in the form of information assurance advisors (IA) and consultancies, many of which provide comprehensive courses to help protect a business from the cyber crime. Look out for IA professionals are CESG certified and members of the CESG Listed Advisor Scheme (CLAS). Of course, there’s no catch-all solution. The cyber criminals are constantly finding new ways to access systems. However, those who take the time and effort to make themselves and their customers as secure as possible, only position themselves far more favorably in a hostile online environment.

When the challenge of January 31 - tax returns deadline day - arises, Lloydbottoms Accountants clients have no need to panic. The Bristol practice is proud of its consistent record of filing every personal tax return (where it’s been supplied with appropriate information) before time runs out. And this year proved no exception. It’s just one of the many ways the Staple Hill chartered accountant’s provides its clients with financial peace of mind. Accounts, tax returns, bookkeeping, VAT returns payroll, RTI returns, cash-flow and profit forecasts are all part of the service for both businesses and individuals. Also an agency for Santander UK, the practice has been an established part of the Bristol business community for more than 30 years. In February 2013, it entered a new chapter when Susan Rickerby, took over the helm. “My aim was, and has always been, to continue the tradition of providing a high quality, affordable but professional, personal service,” says Susan who has more than 25 years of experience of working with a wide variety of businesses and individuals of all ages and with varying levels of complex financial requirements.
Helping her achieve her goal are Ben Steele, now more than half way towards becoming a qualified certified accountant, Jackie Swift, who holds MAAT-qualified status and James Coombs along with other members of the team - Jack Cox, Becci McDonald, Roz Rogers and Deb Evans whose primary responsibility is the Santander Agency. Between them, they offer a friendly and down-to-earth personal service, full of practical advice and support, and always a fast turnaround and response to client’s requirements. Here, flexibility is key and the Lloydbottoms team is happy to welcome customers to the High Street office or, if more appropriate, come to customers’ premises. And sometimes, visits may not even be necessary at all. The practice uses cloud technology for the secure exchange of documents which can then be digitally signed and returned automatically. The service is an indication of Susan’s plans for 2014 to see an increased use of technology and a decreased use of paper. She’s also hoping to bring a trainee, possibly an apprentice, on board while continuing to grow the practice’s client base. “If you’re an individual we will work with you to ensure that your personal finances are in order and that your tax liabilities are kept to a minimum,” she promises. “And if you are a business, it doesn’t matter if you are just starting out, are looking to grow or just need a better, more efficient accounting service, we're here to provide everything you need.” For further information about Lloydbottoms Accountants and its services, and to view some helpful advice from its extensive resource centre or to download its app, go to

Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE, Chief Executive of MITIE and Opening Doors Business Awards judge
Good Business is Harnessing Young Talent In this economic environment it’s never been more important for businesses to look beyond the traditional business fairs and recruitment routes to harness great talent and build our country’s skills base. Recently, I joined a panel of business leaders, including James Caan, Peter Searle, Kay Allen and James Turner from the Sutton Trust, to judge nominations for the Deputy Prime Minister’s Opening Doors Business Awards 2013. These awards showcase the very best traineeships and recruitment schemes offered by companies signed-up to the ‘Business Compact’ – a commitment to career opportunities based on what you know, not who you know. I was very impressed to see some of the largest companies in the country reaching out to young people from all walks of life. Of the 150 members of the Compact over half offer work experience to disadvantaged young people and 92% think opening up recruitment on a fairer footing will give their organisation a broader range of talent. I also met some truly inspiring hard-working young people – they’re enthusiastic, eager and ready to learn, giving all they’ve got. With the odds stacked him, Adam Taylor worked hard to get on in life, supporting his family and defying his ‘special needs’ tag to work his way through college and university to succeed as a high-flyer at Airbus. Adam was all but written-off in school but now is a great asset to his employer. That’s why leading businesses are looking for ways to make sure that young people with talent and drive no longer go unnoticed. Channel 4 won the Deputy Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence as they have shown a commitment to inspiring and developing young people which runs right to the heart of the business. Other winners include law firm Slaughter and May for its incredibly successful school mentoring work; EE for targeting apprenticeships in areas of high-unemployment; and Marks and Spencer for its work to give young people who are not in education or employment a second chance.
Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE is the Chief Executive of MITIE Group PLC, the strategic outsourcing company. She joined MITIE in 2002 and was appointed as CEO in 2007. She is one of a small number of women holding the position of Chief Executive in the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 and is the first Asian woman to be appointed in such a role within that group of companies. Since joining, she has seen MITIE grow its revenue from £0.5bn to over £2.0bn, continuing its unbroken track record of profit and revenue growth. Key dates 1985-1991

Like these companies, I’m a firm believer that businesses big and small can do more to attract talented individuals from a diverse workforce giving the UK the edge we need to compete on a global scale. After all, a company’s employees are their biggest investment – you’re not only investing in your business, but in UK plc. We need to cut through the system of informal networks, break down the barriers of university prejudice and family internships to recognise the potential out there – this means throwing our doors open to offer young people that chance to grasp opportunities. Growing talent in-house generates company loyalty like nothing else. Talent is out there for the taking – and we need to recognise our young people have more attributes than just youth on their side.

The burden of meeting demands of new pension legislation will create challenges for most, if not all employers. It is our opinion that technology, in particular HR and payroll systems, will play a major part in making auto enrolment work for most employers in Bristol. Features such as the interaction of HR and Payroll systems, a diary system for re-enrolment and the ability to flag assessment dates and salary trigger dates in the payroll system will be key features of the systems utilised. Our team of specialist financial planners at English Mutual have been providing financial advice to businesses across the region, to ease the headache of preparing for auto enrolment. What we also deliver is a technology solution which can be used by all employers, irrespective of size, to manage all workplace benefits provided for employees; valued benefits such as pensions, life assurance and private medical schemes whilst also providing all the tools required to ensure compliance with the new pension reforms being introduced in line with their anticipated staging dates. The English Mutual solution is a webbased system which does not need to be installed on a client’s computer. It is an ‘agnostic’, meaning that there is no need for an employer to change their existing pension or benefits providers; nor is there any need to change the payroll provider or process. The solution is referred to as ‘Middleware’, because it can plug into any payroll system clients may have, any pension scheme or schemes in existence, as well as other benefit programmes an employer may have or may want to have in the future.
As the technology can plug into such a wide range of systems and processes, it can both summarise and manage an entire suite of workplace benefits on one single platform. However, the real strength of bringing the management of all workplace benefits together in this way is that the systems have also been designed for employees to use; and all may have access 24/7 from any internet browsing device including smartphones. The system has been designed to enable employees to interact with it and, at specified times, to manage their own workplace benefits within the parameters set by the client. English Mutual’s specialist team of financial planners can help your company run the entire process of auto-enrolment and ensure that you comply with the new pension reforms that affect all employers. For further information on how English Mutual can solve your ‘Auto-Enrolment Headache’ call English Mutual on 0845 603 3679 and ask to speak to one of our Employee Benefit Team

NEST has an annual contribution limit of £4,500 (for the 2013/14 tax year), as well as a ban on transfers-in of members’ existing pension funds for at least the first five years of operation of the scheme, in order not to damage private sector pension providers and distort the market. Industry experts, however, maintain that the Government has missed an opportunity to boost automatic enrolment into pensions at work, after Steve Webb said restrictions on Nest, the default scheme set up by government, would remain until 2017. It means companies will eventually be freed up to choose Nest as the single scheme for all employees, in a move fiercely opposed by leading pension companies including Edinburghbased Aegon and Scottish Life.
With time rapidly running out for many employers to set up their own scheme in order to meet their Auto Enrolment obligations, it seems timely to look at the Government’s own default scheme, NEST. Any employer who has not set up a qualifying pension scheme by their staging date will be automatically enrolled in NEST, a government backed workplace pension scheme that meets the criteria of a qualifying scheme under the Pensions Act 2008, and has a public service obligation to let any employer that wishes to use it to do so when their employer duties begin. NEST has been designed for a broad range of employers and members, including those who may not have engaged with workplace pension schemes before. NEST is a trust-based, not-forprofit pension scheme, lowcost scheme. Members pay a 1.8 per cent charge on contributions plus a 0.3 per cent annual management charge (AMC). Together, the charges are broadly equivalent to a 0.5 per cent AMC, giving potential members access to the sort of low charges enjoyed by people in large occupational schemes today. It is a defined contribution scheme which means that minimum contributions are fixed, usually as a percentage of a member’s earnings. The retirement pot a member gets from a defined contribution scheme depends on how much has been contributed,
the investment return achieved and the amount of charges over time. Automatically enrolled individuals will receive minimum employer contributions in addition to their own contribution, plus tax relief if they are eligible. These minimum contributions are percentages based on a band of earnings between £5,668 and £41,450 per year (in October 2013 terms). Concerns have been expressed that workers making contributions into any scheme may have unrealistic expectations of their final entitlement. Steve Webb Pensions Minister has warned that the government scheme alone will not be enough to ensure the financial well-being of pensioners. He said “Employees on average salaries will have to save more than the amounts contributed through auto-enrolment if they want to maintain their standard of living in retirement.” He told the BBC's Today programme that the maximum contribution, equivalent to 8% of earnings, would not produce sufficient pension income to maintain an employee's standard of living in retirement, particularly those on higher salaries.
Joanne Segars, chief executive of the National Association of Pension Funds, said Nest had an important role to play in making auto-enrolment a success. She said: "There might have been a case for lifting these barriers earlier, but doing so from 2017 provides the clarity and certainty that employers, savers and the pensions market all need." She added: "Employers will be able to treat Nest like any other pension on the market, and savers will be able to pool their small pension pots into a simpler and bigger fund." But former government adviser Dr Ros Altmann said the government "seems to have bowed to industry pressure" by delaying the changes. She said: "The private pensions industry has already managed to prevent Nest from winning some of the most profitable pensions business." By 2017 most attractive employer business will have chosen other schemes. The longer the restrictions remain, the less business NEST will attract, because once employers have already chosen a scheme for their auto-enrolment duties, they will be less likely to want to move to NEST later." Steve Webb, however maintains, "With over 250,000 members already, it is clear that NEST is a success. Targeting low to moderate earners that the market has traditionally forgotten, NEST has ensured that everyone has access to quality pension provision.”

The company helps businesses to maximise their income opportunities and enhance their service offering by providing valuable independent financial advice and a non-advised comparison service. Andrew Pearson, Head of Operations, explained the system, “We do this by providing our corporate clients with their own dedicated phone line to offer to their customers and staff.”
experience, with the aim being to increase consumer’s confidence that they are dealing with a professionally qualified adviser – giving them the choice of either completely independent or restricted advice and ensuring transparent adviser remuneration. 425 Financial Solutions’ challenge was to move to a new feebased charging structure and ensure that all their independent financial advisers became diploma qualified before they could offer any form of financial advice. This we have successfully achieved, bringing different areas of the business together in a new way coupled with a focus on personal staff development. Looking ahead we will continue to focus on people development, training and service. We are also creating a stronger online presence to better serve our customers’ needs enabling us to develop long-term sustainable B2B relationships and providing a solid platform for expansion.

Westfield has been providing tailored packaging solutions from concept to full scale production, for over 20 years. Owned by Ian and Angie Whitfield, the company has evolved to meet customer demand, exploring new markets and embracing new technology. They developed from a base of pattern making for the GRP industry in 1989, through to manufacturing vacuum formed packaging in 1991 which now forms the majority of their business.
New to their design portfolio are chocolate moulds and they were proud to be asked to produce moulds for Sainsbury's Christmas Belgian chocolate baubles, and to be involved in the design and development of the Waitrose brand Woodland Friends 3d chocolate characters. Westfield is an environmentally responsible manufacturer and can help by careful design, and advising on the right materials for your project reducing environmental impact. So, whatever tool, packaging or materials you need, from moulds or packaging for lollipops to an air control tower in Swaziland, Westfield can help.

Ian Whitfield has over 30 years experience in model making and pattern making, and it is his ingenuity and experience that enable the company to provide solutions for the varied project requests from their clients. They work with some of the best known names in the UK, such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Aldi, Harrods and John Lewis, but also help small manufacturers with product development or artisan food producers to design the best packaging or moulds for their products.
INJECTION MOULDINGS LIMITED Thanks to his superstar team, Stephen Rawse never worries about Injection Mouldings’ ability to turn even the most obscure request into reality. “I have people in whom I can trust and respect to deliver consistent quality and growth,” he smiles. “They are the business’s greatest success.” But the company, based in a 24 hour state of the art operation in Gloucester Road, Staverton, has more to celebrate. Having weathered the recession with a period of growth, further expansion is expected as work has started on a building which will double the size of the already extended production facility.
“We look forward to seeing new machines being delivered and working,” says Stephen. Injection Mouldings was established by Chairman Nicholas Tee in 1994 to provide high quality moulded products in complex engineering polymers. Mouldings are supplied throughout the UK and Europe and, if required, the company can hold prearranged stock levels for customers. Putting clients first is also demonstrated by its willingness to make arrangements for customers to move their tooling to Injection Moulding Limited to make things easier for them to change moulders.

Always an innovator, it was the first in the South West to invest in a computerised engraving/routing machine, Continental Engravers combines traditional methods with computerised machines and signmaking equipment to produce quality lasting plaques and signs.
ENGRAVERS PRECISION LTD
Ask Robert Thomson and his Continental Engravers team what they make or engrave and you can forgive them for scratching their heads. “There’s no easy answer,” he offers. “We manufacture and engrave many different and sometimes very odd or unusual parts, objects or precision components, from simple name tags, armillary sundials, machine switch/mimic panels, to precision military equipment for the MOD and aerospace industry.” Then there are the many plaques for the Queen, plaques marking Paddington Station’s 150 years and Wrigley’s 40th anniversary, plus commemorative plaques for most of the Royal Family, VIPs, MPs, actors and sportspeople and not forgetting the company’s long association with the signage installation for NHS and private hospitals from Glasgow to Plymouth. It has also produced plaques in tribute to the firefighters lost in the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. One is installed at the FDNY Training Centre in New York and the other at the St. Austell Fire Station in Cornwall.
“We pride ourselves in the ability to take customers’ ideas or designs and turn them into a finished engraved, routed or sign product,” says Robert.

Changes & within the
Challenges
Haulage Industry You would think that the last 30 years, which have seen the biggest employment sectors move abroad, would have put the brakes on our haulage industry. The coal mining, metal bashing and car building of the 1970s, as well as some of the lighter manufacturing, may have been exported to Eastern Europe or Asia, but such developments have proved to be anything but the death knell for businesses which move goods from one part of the country to another. In fact, it’s been all hands to the steering wheel as the nation’s demand for cheaper consumer goods, such as DVDs, clothes and cameras, rocketed. Getting them from their arrival point, the ports, to depot and on to shops has seen the haulage business hold its own in the changing UK economy. That’s not to gloss over the challenges it’s encountered upon the way, the most recent of course being economic global recession. Today’s operators now have to take into account rocketing petrol prices and rising fuel duty - accounting for about 25% of their running costs - the need to keep abreast of a highly regulated industry and the threat of new road tolls and charges across the country. Clearly it’s not a truckbed of roses but, even in the face of continuing competition from eastern Europe, the UK road haulage industry is carrying more than 80% of all domestic freight, says the Road Haulage Association (RHA).
Roughly two-thirds of this is carried by 'hire or reward' operators - 'third party' businesses which transport other companies' products around the country - the rest are corporates big enough to run their own logistics and freight divisions. The haulage industry comprises about 52,000 businesses, operating around 425,000 vehicles with more than 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. There are approximately 104,000 holders of operating licences. There are a few sector ‘giants’, but haulage tends to be a sector for the smaller operator with 87% of businesses having only five or fewer vehicles, according to the RHA. Motoring through three decades of economic transformation has also meant change on a technological scale probably unimagined by many. Today’s haulage firm can follow its vehicles’ progress on a computer screen, knowing its exact location in any part of the world, thanks to GPS devices. Other technology can give insights into how a vehicle’s driven, which can lead to cost savings on fuel and insurance premiums while mapping software and sat nav can help the drivers reach destinations often via the fastest route. Even cameras are being applied to dashboards to help reduce insurance costs and protect drivers from fraudulent claims. Some companies have found their slowmoving vehicles to be deliberately targeted by other drivers crashing into the back.
But there’s one further development to be documented from the last 30 years. Remember that advert with the hunky lorry driver manfully stretching for the chunky chap-sized chocolate? Today, it’s more likely a woman who’s reaching from behind the wheel for that bruising bar. Of the transport and logistics sector’s 2.2 million workforce, 25% are women, while the number holding senior positions has grown to a substantial figure. There’s also an increasing amount of female managers, drivers, engineers, transport office and staff in all disciplines. The image of truck operation as a man’s world is long gone and the drive is on to attract even more women to the industry. Chairman of the Freight Logistics Industry Image Group Geoff Dossetter says: “The list of political and public appointments relating to transport and logistics and held by women, together with the growing numbers of senior operating managers, should help to dispel the long out-of-date concept of our industry as a ‘men-only’ world.” Group member Kate Gibbs from the RHA adds: “The achievement of so many women should act as an encouragement to all. Logistics is an equal-opportunity sector and the sky is the limit for talented and enthusiastic women.” Women’s successes within the industry are celebrated still further with the Freight Transport Association’s (FTA) Everywoman Transport and Logistics Awards 2014. Held on May 13, they are now in their seventh year. FTA Chief Executive, Theo de Pencier says: “The key for the freight and transport industry is to access a wider talent pool so it can meet its need for good quality staff in whichever role it needs to fill. We have to reach out to all parts of the community and, in particular, to women, to recruit and retain the best and to enable all of our organisations and businesses to flourish.”

Why you should support your local independent garage this winter Off the back of Small Business Saturday which took place on December 10, countrywide independent garage scheme Trust My Garage is urging local businesses to add their local independent garage to their supplier lists.
labour cost is slightly over £40 for independent garages, much less than the recent Warranty Direct Annual Labour Rates survey demonstrated for franchise garages; a national average of £75.
Just as Small Business Saturday voiced the message to buy local and support your nearest independent businesses, independent garages can also offer a great service to surrounding businesses as a key link in the local community.
Quality of work Although independent garages cost a significant amount less than main dealers there is no compromise on the level of expertise and parts. All Trust My Garage members have access to the same level of technical information and quality parts. Training is also no different and most independent garages train their staff to the same levels as main dealers.
There are a number of reasons why motorists should get their car serviced at their local independent garage, rather than a main dealership. It’s a common misconception that a service at an independent garage will void the warranty on a vehicle, but EU law now states that drivers are no longer legally required to go to an authorised dealership for quality service and repair work. Taking your brand new car to an independent garage will not invalidate your warranty as long as the garage services the vehicle according to the manufacturer’s schedule using parts which are of “equivalent quality”.
Price The Independent Garage Association recently polled over 2,000 of its members on their labour rates and concluded that independent garages ‘continue to offer motorists the very best value for money.’ Figures from the poll show that the average

Independent garages are renowned for their customer service and their customer retention levels. The only way they can succeed is if they leave motorists feeling satisfied once having work done on their car, so they’ll often go that extra mile that main dealers can’t.

trans plant mastertrain
Being top of the class means keeping abreast of all industry requirements and Trans Plant Mastertrain does that with ease. With the arrival of a new European Directive requiring all lorry drivers to complete 35 hours of Driver CPC training before September 2014, it’s already delivering this not only at the training centre, but taking it to clients’ premises. “At £50, plus VAT and a download fee, this is excellent value for money,” says Geoff. Looking ahead to 2013, the company is increasing its fleet of vehicles so it can provide training on lorries up to 7.5t (C1 & C1E category) and it is now offering employers a free visit from Director Martyn Goldsworthy to discuss their needs and support in creating a Training Needs Analysis.
Forklift operators keep on trucking, lorry drivers keep on the road and mobile crane operatives remain on the move, thanks to Trans Plant Mastertrain. Those behind assorted wheels are not the only ones who hone their skills or learn new ones at the specialist Exeter site of this leading provider of industrial and commercial training. A whole host of disciplines and sectors are covered by the independently owned company which started out 20 years ago providing lorry driver and forklift truck training but now handles plant and machinery training, mainly for the construction and agricultural industries. Subjects covered include: • Car and trailer training • All types of Lorry training • Forklift Truck training • Driver CPC courses • Mobile crane training • Appointed person and lift supervisor courses
• •
CIEH Health & Safety Apprenticeships in Driving Goods Vehicles with free lorry licences to candidates under 19.

Good news indeed in light of the long-lasting economic gloom. Geoff and his team have had their own challenges, however, he’s grateful for the level of support the company has received over the years, not only from existing customers but suppliers and, by being flexible has also been able to open a door to new business opportunities. “We understand that times are hard for some individuals and so allow clients to make six monthly payments for courses,” he says. “We have also seen success by partnering with local colleges to offer funded programmes so employed people under 19 can obtain their lorry licence for free or partially funded training for candidates over that age by completing an Apprenticeship in Driving Goods Vehicles.” For further information about the full range of courses from Trans Plant Mastertrain, please go to

It was recently recognised by Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, who attended the launch of four multifunction vessels whose main engines, diesel generators, shafts and propellers were supplied by WaterMota. THE winds of change are blowing through Devonshire’s WaterMota - the sign of full blown success. The 15 employee distributor for marine and industrial engines, gearboxes and generators, has charted a course for the growing wind farm market, helping to keep busy crew transfer vessels shipshape and moving. Yarmouth Rose
It’s also continuing its work with tug boats, recently supplying a second pair of twin Doosan 4V222TIH engines for a tug built by Macduff Shipyards for a Belfast owner, while its Romanian business is sailing full ahead. With five years’ continued growth in its busy wake, WaterMota is set to keep surfing the wave of success throughout 2014, continuing to expand into the industrial market with supply and support. The ability to embrace change has always served the business, which is based on the Heathfield Industrial Estate near Newton Abbot, well. Launched in 1911, WaterMota is one of the country’s oldest established marine engineering companies and in the 1960s and ’70s, converted Ford automotive engines. However, the last few years have seen it transform into a sought after distributor, concentrating on engines such as Doosan for commercial craft and industrial applications.
Whether here or abroad, Mike puts the steady growth in turnover down to selling high quality products at realistic prices. “Our products are very well liked and accepted,” he says. “We have the experience and expertise to ensure any marine installation is a success. “Apart from the products we manufacture and represent, we offer the marine industry experience and expertise, gained from more than a century of serving this market.”

“We represent, as an exclusive distributor, many of the world’s leading manufacturers of marine equipment,” says MD Mike Beacham. “The commercial and workboat markets remain key but we’ve also moved back into the leisure market.” It was Mike who transformed WaterMota from a manufacturing business to successful distributor after taking the helm in 1994. “Times were changing – an increased demand for more efficient engines was clear and after seeing the Daewoo range, (now Doosan), I visited the firm in South Korea to become its UK distributor and haven’t looked back,” he says. In 2008 following a sales visit to Romania, Mike set up WaterMota Romania, which now commands a €1.25m turnover and is the Bulgaria and Romania diesel engine representative for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Doosan, Fischer Panda, Lister Petter, Hyundai SeasAll, Craftsman Marine, FNM and Baudouin.

Positive News for the UK’s Construction Sector The UK’s construction industry is firing on all cylinders and is no longer the weakest link in the economy.
The new findings couldn’t be better for the construction industry which accounts for about 6.3% of the economy and has struggled for some time.
That’s the upbeat view of two senior figures following the latest sector survey which has recorded the fastest rise in output since 2007.
Schemes such as the Government’s Help to Buy, to support people looking to buy their first home and to spur construction of new properties, are being viewed as having some effect.
That’s not all. The Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index has also registered the sharpest rise in residential construction in more than a decade and business outlook optimism at its highest since 2010. It’s not the only survey showing the upturn. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) noted in August that construction output was up 4% on the year, the strongest annual increase since December 2011 while the National House Building Council (NHBC) reported a 25% increase in new home registrations for 2013 up to August. Tim Moore, Senior Economist at global financial information services company Markit, and author of the September report, says the third quarter of 2013 ended with output growth riding high amid greater spending on infrastructure projects and resurgent house building activity. “The reversal in fortunes has spanned commercial, residential and public sector construction projects,” he adds. “Builders are confident that a tide of new tender opportunities will continue to lift the construction sector, supported by improved development funding conditions and better underlying economic conditions. “The September survey suggests that constructors are beginning to react with confidence to the more positive landscape, as job creation and input buying both rose at robust rates over the month.” Commercial Director Richard Tamayo comments: "Our statistics continued the pattern we saw over the course of the year, with registration figures showing a noticeable improvement on recent years.”
The Construction Products Association is also forecasting construction output growth of 2.2% in 2014 and 4.5% in 2015, but at the same time is warning about the prospects of sustained growth because of what it describes as low activity in the infrastructure sector. Economics Director, Noble Francis warns. “We predict that construction’s recovery will be led primarily by private housing in the short-term, but will only be sustained in the long-term with broader growth from other sectors and most notably the vital infrastructure sector, where government announcements will need to translate into real activity on the ground." The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) says its members are forecasting a sharp acceleration in business activity over the next 12 months and there’s a greater expectation of more jobs. However, the improving picture for employment is already being reflected in a jump in reported skill shortages, highlighting the potential for capacity issues. Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist, comments: “It is particularly concerning that we’re already receiving reports of some skill shortages as well as capacity constraints for building materials such as bricks.”
There could be help on this front from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) which has announced an initiative as part of its efforts to get the industry training and back into growth. Its Training Committee – with members drawn from across the industry - has agreed to provide an exceptional training grant of £15m to reward employers, and make an extra £15m available to encourage them to train within the 2013/14 Grants Scheme. David Noble, Chief Executive Officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, says the new figures show the construction sector is firing on all cylinders. “In September, growth in UK house building hit heights not seen for 10 years and was supported by a solid acceleration in business from commercial construction, whilst growth in civil engineering remains well above the long run average. Confidence is now at its strongest in almost three and a half years. “Having been in the doldrums for so long, builders are using this renewal as a platform to invest, with employment seeing the most dramatic upturn in close to six years. “Inevitably, purchasing levels have also increased, but the adverse effect of this is increased pressure on suppliers to meet growing levels of demand, to the extent that their performance deteriorated at the fastest rate for 16 years. “These pressures, along with increased cost burdens have the potential to act as a brake on the sector, but should not overshadow the overwhelmingly positive picture for UK construction.”

The practice has recently completed two very significant and interesting houses, Dor Lewern, at Sennen Cove and Treleigh, at St Ives, are contemporary in style and utilise passive design techniques and/or latest technologies to achieve very low carbon footprints and in turn running costs.
Studiowest Architects founded in 2011, are a small practice based in St Just Cornwall, with a special interest in low energy contemporary design. Dor Lewern
Dor Lewern is a large 4 en-suite bedroomed, private house designed to make the most of the stunning views over Sennen Cove. The building is a timber frame with high levels of insulation and air-tightness. Windows and doors are triple glazed. Electricity consumption is offset by a rooftop solar pv array. An air source heat pump and solar thermal panels provide heating and the domestic hot water. The challenge of this design was to harness passive solar gain through glazing from the rear (south) elevation, while the views out to sea were on the north. This was achieved by a mechanical ventilation

Treleigh’s design, with its integrated solar roof produces more electricity than it consumes. An air source heat pump provides the main heating, backed up by a gas boiler for extreme weather. The heavily insulated walls have been constructed using Durisol ICF blocks which have a high thermal mass enabling the building to store heat. Building for the Over There’s a massive market out there for new homes - and we’re not talking about first-time buyers. Retired people form the country’s fastest growing demographic group and with them comes a new demand for a particular type of housing. Unfortunately, the UK’s housing shortfall includes a big gap in future housing provision for older people. With the number of over 60s set to reach 20 million by the 2030s, there are calls for action to be taken now over ‘woefully inadequate’ provision. A survey last autumn by think tank Demos, supported by the Home Builders Federation, found that while 3.5 million people aged over 60 were interested in buying a retirement home, just 100,000 were for sale. If all those who wanted to were all able to move, more than three million homes would be freed onto the housing market, the study said. Calls for action were made again recently by trade association, ARCO (the Associated Retirement Community Operators), which represents more than 50% of the UK retirement community market.
50s
ARCO wants to see 5% of older people living in retirement communities by 2030 and has called on planning departments to adopt a more consistent and positive approach to dealing with applications for specialist housing for older people. However it gave a cool reception to Labour’s proposals, announced at the end of 2013, to force councils and developers to release land for 200,000 new homes each year by 2020. Executive director Michael Voges commented that the plans were ‘welcome policy’ to kickstart a major round of house building but added: “As the Care Bill is being debated in Parliament and the over 60s are due to hit 20 million by 2031, all three political parties are missing a trick by continuing to address housing for first time buyers.” ARCO has called for a suspension of stamp duty on purchases of properties in retirement communities, as well as an increase in Homes and Communities Agency funding for the construction of specialist retirement properties. Demos added weight to calls for action after its report found that 33% of over 60s wanted to downsize if suitable retirement homes were available and urged the Government to get behind the drive for more retirement properties. A request for councils to encourage the construction of more bungalows for older people was not enough, said Demos, pointing out that the buildings were often too far from amenities and didn’t provide the facilities and support needed by many.
Chairman Jon Gooding said: “To keep pace with the demand for good homes for older people we must push for more growth in specialist housing options that enable them to lead active and fulfilled lives for as long as possible.”
In its Top of the Ladder report, Demos maintains that helping older people move to more suitable homes would breathe new life into the housing market, including the lower end where many would-be firsttime buyers struggle because of soaring prices.
The report adds that releasing the equity held by older people could ease the poverty and financial problems many face, which would increase their spending power and boost the economy. However the Government isn’t ignoring the situation. Although its housing strategy, published last November, was hailed as benefitting first-time buyers and young families, it did include measures to address the housing crisis at the other end of the age spectrum. And it’s here where there is real potential, not just because the physical reality of the growing number of retired people. Increasingly this is a demographic that places more and more of a positive emphasis on the need for security, socialising opportunities and convenience. This has been recognised by property specialists for a while, not least Knight Frank who, in a a previous housing retirement report noted: "There are many options, but there is a real opportunity for purpose-built retirement housing, especially the retirement village concept, as long as developers get it right. “The over 60s live longer, healthier and more active lives and has a dramatic impact on their requirements. “Design must acknowledge that their social habits reflect those of the wider population in that their social networks are spread across the country – with the consequent need to accommodate visitors. “Also many still work; such as part-time consultancy based at home, and therefore require extra space. “In Australia, Scandinavia, the US and New Zealand, retirement villages have been popular for decades but there are still relatively few in the UK. “As the concept becomes better understood, it can only imply strong prospects for growth.”

2012 Paul recognised the demand for solar panels in Northern Ireland, and opened an office on the other side of the Irish Sea.
PPAUL A UL O O’B O’BRIEN R I E N SOLAR SOLAR INSTALLATIONS INSTALLATIONS Businesses seeking to gain control of rising heating costs are looking at ever more creative ways to manage their energy consumption and expenditure and are realising that solar power can be the answer.
The firm has been responsible for installing more solar panels in Bristol than any other firm operating in the sector, and at the same time saw a surge in demand for loft and cavity installation, with people becoming more cost conscious when it came to electricity bills. The company continues to grow and is proud to have secured employment for around 100 people spread across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and permanent jobs with long term training and prospects. They are currently tendering for a contract with Bristol City Council for the installation of 1 gigawatt of solar, citywide. Adam Phelps, Manager said, “We are committed to developing the business into the South West’s largest independently-owned solar panel installer and build on the last three years of success” Paul O’Brien Solar Installations (SW) Ltd remains in a position to offer both free and paid-for solar panels and installation on both commercial and domestic rooftops. This can be done on a lease agreement or an outright sale and they are experiencing heavy demand for these services, so don’t miss out!

www.pobsolar.co.uk They are finding that there is no better time for business owners to install a solar system which will not only greatly reduce energy bills but also generate an income for the duration of the 20 year, government backed Feed in Tariff programme. Not just saving money, but helping the environment, engenders a pleasant feeling of virtue if not downright smugness as energy bills fall, however, it is important to choose a reputable, well established, specialist to carry out the work, one that has been immersed in the industry for some years and can offer a range of other energy saving measures.

insulation, solar panels, biomass boilers and heat pumps to name a few, are receiving support to grow and/or diversify into this growing market. Regen SW provide support via training events, workshops, access to a dedicated business advisor and the potential for funding (‘business development voucher’) towards business development activities, amongst these skills training, accreditation and marketing needs. Registered businesses under the Ready for Retrofit programme are also informed of upcoming tender opportunities and projects to aid the uptake of housing retrofit locally, such as Bristol City Council’s Home Energy Upgrade project and the Bristol Solar City initiative. Feedback from an initial sample of 110 south west businesses from the programme demonstrates extremely positive signs for the retrofit market, with turnover reported to have increased by approx. £4.9m with a further approx. £7.2m safeguarded over the last year. Additionally, a further 41 jobs have been created and 51 jobs have been safeguarded. The Ready for Retrofit programme runs until December 2014, so eligible south west based companies can still register for free business support by visiting http://www.regensw.co.uk/projects/microgeneration-and-energyefficiency/energy-efficiency/ready-for-retrofit/ready-for-retrofit--register-your-interest. top quality butchers
Andre ws Q U A L I T Y M E AT S Andrews Quality Meats is robustly demonstrating that the traditional butcher’s is far from being a dying trade struggling against the dominance of supermarkets and convenience foods. Here business is booming to the extent that the Wiltshire company has three separate shops across the county. For directors Andrew Sears and Andrew Ayris it’s proof, if any were needed, that discerning shoppers know just where to find the best quality meat and associated products, secure in the knowledge that its origins are known and it’s been skilfully prepared to the highest of standards. “We buy our meat from quality local farms, thus reducing its food miles as well as ensuring customers know exactly where it’s come from,” says Andrew Sears. “We’re very proud of the relationship we have with our carefully selected farmer partners. It gives us first-hand knowledge of the care and attention they pay to animal feed and welfare. “What’s more, we don’t let anyone else touch our meat. We take it to the abattoir and then butcher and bone it in house. “With more than 20 years' experience in all aspects of the meat trade and every one of our butchers trained to the unique levels required, all the cutting that we do is only ever of the highest quality.” With such top levels of skill come the very best kind of professionalism and flexibility to supply every customer’s individual need. The shops, in Highworth, Swindon, Malborough and Tockenham, near Royal Wootton Bassett, all offer pork, lamb of beef - matured on the bone and not in a bag, Andrew Ayris points out - veal, poultry and game. The company also makes its own sausages deli meats and readyto-eat pies, cures its own bacon and sells baguettes as a tasty snack offering.

For the more unsure, help and advice on what joints or cuts of meat to choose or how to cook meat is always available. With cuts being prepared every possible way - diced, sliced, minced, boned or rolled depending on what the customer wants - it’s no wonder growing numbers of people visit the

shops as they find the Andrews team more than, well, ‘meats’ their every requirement. The Highworth store was the first to open in 1995. Malborough, the most recent, opened just over two years ago and, reports Andrew Sears, is continuing the successful trend of getting busier and busier.
“As master butchers we put everything into bringing the best to your table,” says Andrew Ayris. “Above all our meats are expertly prepared for flavour, taste and tenderness. Our passion is our livelihood.”

made it a popular resting place for holidaymakers who flock to the Cornish town. All its 21 bedrooms are ensuite, with Sky TV, radio, telephone Wi-Fi, telephone, tea/coffee and ironing facilities, and the hotel is an ideal base from which to explore the north and south Cornish coasts and all of the attractions in between. Of more local appeal is the versatile function suite, perfect for wedding, christening and birthday celebrations but easily transformed into a 21st century conference venue for up to 120 delegates. It also hosts business meetings or training days, and suitable equipment such as screens, flipcharts, LCD or OHP and stationery, is available.

An evening at Bristol’s The Pump House is destined to be more than just about food.
P U M P
That’s the promise from Chef Proprietor Toby Gritten who, with business partner Daniel Obern, is sure a night here will be one that stands out from the rest, not least thanks to the team’s personable and informative approach.
It’s certainly one that has resulted in a host of accolades for the Hotwells restaurant. They include a place in the Michelin, Good Food and AA Guide who have awarded 2 rosettes and a notable wine list award. As well as Bristol’s Best Restaurant and Best Chef titles at local good food awards.
HOUSE
and can provide seasonal home made tipples such as mulled cider or lemonade. The overall offering has certainly proved a hit, with the Pump House attracting increasing numbers of diners and it’s now busier than ever. With one of the biggest challenges being managing a large building with so many different dining areas, Toby and Daniel now plan to make the al fresco dining experience a real winner. “It has been difficult to be consistent in what we do when much of our business has been dependable on the weather,” explains Toby. “Now we have built up such a good reputation this is less of a problem. Last year we renovated part of the outdoor area and we aim to make it shine. “We have a new outdoor ‘shack’ which will serve drinks and snacks for those on the waterside terrace and the outdoor dining area is due a full renovation.”
From powering the bridges and machines of Bristol Harbour, this former Victorian hydraulic pumping house is now powering the appetites of local foodies. Daniel and Toby, who are also behind the successful Bird In Hand at Long Ashton, took over the building in 2007 and spearheaded its transformation into one of the city’s most popular restaurants with a fascinating array of dining areas. Choose your table: there’s a mezzanine restaurant, a ground floor dining area and a secluded outdoor dining area tucked round the side of the waterside terrace. Then choose your menu. The Pump House offers a la carte or a tasting menu. The latter proved a popular addition last year representing an exploration of fresh, local and foraged produce which Toby, known in the region’s food industry as a keen forager, plans to develop further. While the tasting menus combine classic dishes and modern cooking techniques, the brasserie style menu provides more traditional pub fare with a strong emphasis on quality. Everything is prepared on site, with local produce delivered daily and fish arriving from Cornwall. To slake a thirst, the bar has an extensive range of drinks including more than 60 gins with a variety of tonics and over 30 whiskies. It serves a range of local beers, good quality coffee

Functional Fitness Bristol designs and implements tailored corporate wellness and team building programmes that are fun, results driven and practical.
Joel Woodley and Rich Bignell are passionate about making Bristol a city fit for the 21st century. They’ve galvanised their energy into creating a dynamic business that is helping people within work live healthier and more fulfilling lives. In the year since Functional Fitness Bristol was launched to bring corporate wellness and team building services to small and medium sized companies, the pair have seen dramatic effects on those they’ve helped. And they’re determined to help even more.
Using a unique turnkey approach, Joel and Rich work on the three main areas of health: fitness, stress management and nutrition. Working closely alongside employees and running all their services in-house where possible, enables Functional Fitness Bristol to be accessible to all. Rich Bignell “Ultimately we promote the importance of a caring culture at work,” Rich adds. “If an employer takes better care of their employees they will give more back in return, cost less money and take on more responsibilities.” Whether it’s workshops and specialist classes, sports days, or team building and wellness days, Functional Fitness Bristol is pumped up and ready to go on your behalf.
“People have been on some great journeys,” says Rich. “We’ve seen employees build up their self confidence and self esteem, and with their sickness levels decreasing, they feel less fatigued and their productivity at work has risen two fold.” “Meanwhile managers have witnessed the benefits of having fitter and more energised staff,” adds Joel. “Not just with individual work ethic and productivity, but also with overall team spirit and morale.
They also offer health screening, which includes blood pressure checks, cardiovascular risk assessments, BMI and health risk assessments, nutrition and stress management analysis, and can also provide companies with their First Aid at Work certificate, which by law must be updated every three years at least.
Joel Woodley
Firmly focussed on becoming the region’s top corporate wellness provider, Joel and Rich also run 30 minute public stress breaker classes in Queen’s Square on Wednesdays, from 12.30-1pm and 1-1.30pm, amongst other public classes and personal training, “It’s a great chance to release some stress and burn some calories while only taking 30 minutes out of your day,” says Rich.
“In the long run, it all points towards a happier and healthier workforce, a lowering of health insurance costs, an increasing bottom line and a healthier looking balance sheet.” It’s a message that Joel and Rich have been working hard at delivering to the city’s business leaders and are determined to drive this home as they build their brand. “We’ve been championing the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and its multifaceted nature,” says Joel. “It should not be viewed as another responsibility or a tick in the box. Fully incorporating it into a strong, sustainable and profitable business strategy makes complete business sense.”

The Wellnesss
Industry
‘Tis the season to be lovely, the season of eating, drinking and making merry is behind us and the season of “let’s detox” is upon us. While the post Christmas period traditionally sees a surge in appointments and bookings for the spa industry, nowadays its impact is less obvious as stress-relieving and detox treatments become a part of busy people’s year-round routines. Gone are the days when spa treatments and heath-based hotel stays were seen as an exclusive treat for, primarily the wealthy. Today they’re the norm, the regular route to relaxation and stress-busting. Wellness is the new consumer priority as we all set out to manage, reduce and relieve stress, look good, lose weight and take a more proactive and holistic approach towards our lives. Consequently the spa industry has become an important contributor to the economy, with day, residential, leisure club and hotel spas around the country forming part of a £39bn global spa industry. Recent figures from market research expert Mintel has shown more than 35 million Brits a year are spending £5.2bn on services and treatments and there’s been marked growth in the hotel spa segment. Combined with the entry of leisure club operators such as Bannatyne, Virgin Active and Center Parcs, and the increasing numbers of men turning from barbers to ‘brotox’, the emerging ‘wellness’ industry is catering to a much wider audience than it did just 10 years ago.
As consumers seek better ways to take care of themselves, the industry has burgeoned. The new priority is now spilling into the travel industry with holiday makers taking specific health related trips or incorporating wellness activities into any break. Hotels have certainly responded to the new demand that as people travel they want to stay healthy. And it’s not all about appealing to the adult visitor either. Health/spa breaks used to be seen as sanctuaries; places in which adults could relax and revitalise among soothing, peaceful surroundings away from the noisy demands of even the most well behaved children. Not anymore. Many families are now seeking ‘spa-cations’ which welcome offspring of all ages. Spas and hotels are responding by becoming less associated with exclusive ‘grown-up’ pampering and providing accessible experiences for the whole group.
Its annual Trend Report is developed by company research analysts and is based on ongoing surveys with spa and wellness businesses and stakeholders around the globe, thousands of travel agents and hundreds of thousands of consumers. The document noted the trend for hotel spas and gyms to lose their lowly position as mere amenities and become central to an establishment’s rebranding. “Customised food and beverage offerings, including gluten-free and vegan menus, are becoming standard fare, and hotels are jumping into the juice-themed vacation frenzy,” it reported. It also picked up on the male consumer market that’s growing not just in this country but around the world.
Many hotels and resorts are even twisting the traditional view of spa weekend dining - a lettuce leaf and your finest water please - on its head, as the wellness and foodie enthusiasm combines.
“Men are having more serious ‘work’ done at medspas and plastic surgery offices,” the report says, going on to point out: “They have different needs than women when it comes to face/body enhancements, desiring subtle results.
Today, it’s easy to find creative culinary and spa experiences being offered all in one hugely enjoyable package; a grand solution to those seeking romance and healthy, sensory pleasure.
“It's not just more culturally acceptable for men to spend on looking good, it's becoming perceived as a necessity.
The growth of health hotels is certainly bearing out the trends which were predicted earlier this year by Spafinder Wellness, Inc, the industry’s largest media, marketing and gifting company based in London.
“So look for far more spas to provide comprehensive, for-men ‘beauty’ menus – male waxing and threading services and man-geared cosmetic procedures.” For the stay-home health conscious, the UK’s gym scene remains fit and active. Worth £3.86 billion, it’s a lifestyle away from the over chlorinated council swimming pools, bare essentials gyms and selected exclusive tennis clubs of just a few decades ago. Private gyms have exploded into our lives, bringing with them constantly updated stateof-the-art equipment, fitness classes, Zumba classes, Pilates classes and much more. No longer does exercise mean circuit training. Private or council-run, gyms are an essential part of the 21st century wellness culture and friendly places where we not only tone up but meet, enjoy and socialise.

Its official, The Pandora Inn is the best pub in the Southwest, winning Gold at the 2013/14 South West Tourism Awards for the second year running.
Arriving at the Pandora, whether by car, by bicycle, by foot or by the Falmouth packet boat, is like stepping back in time. The Inn, set on the edge of Restronguet Creek, dates in part from to the 13th Century and has flagstone floors, roaring log fires, low-beamed ceilings, a thatched roof, and a warm welcome from managers Catherine and Lester Croft, even for your dog! The Inn was taken over by publicans John Milan and Steve Bellman in 1999, but a severe fire in March 2011 could, quite literally, have turned their dreams to ashes. The men turned potential disaster into an opportunity, and brought the Pandora into the 21st Century and a fresh lease of life. The Grade 2 listed building was carefully restored using traditional materials and building methods by specialist local craftsmen and re-opened for business on 9th March 2012. Great attention was paid to retaining many of the inn's original features and the ground floor appears virtually unchanged. Upstairs, however, the first floor dining area, the “Upper Deck”, is now a stunningly beautiful vaulted room with traditionally pegged green oak beams.
The cosy downstairs bar is well stocked with a range of locally brewed Real Ales from the St Austell Brewery, local ciders and an extensive wine list.

Food is served all day, the ground floor of the pub meanders through a series of rooms where cosy nooks and corners provide plenty of secluded areas for you to dine or the Upper Deck dining room can accommodate larger groups or parties, while for a more cosy dinner party, or even a small conference or business meeting, Captain Edwards’ room can seat a maximum of 10 people in comfort. Outside on warmer days you can eat at tables overlooking the water’s edge, or dine 'on the water' itself – seated on the pontoon. In the summer months, Cornish cream teas are served every afternoon on the pontoon or in the bar. Chef Tom Milby is passionate about using the freshest, local Cornish, seasonal produce whenever possible. He knows just where to go for the freshest fish, meat and vegetables from local fishermen, farmers, growers and friends. As Tom himself says, “What can be better than buying fish and shellfish off the boat as they land it on the Pandora’s own pontoon?” The Pandora is well worth searching out, and for locals and visitors alike, the first visit will certainly not be your last!

A proper pub, The Bristol Flyer, as it's traditionally known, is a friendly pub on the Gloucester Road serving seriously good pub food and an array of speciality drinks. They suggest heading for one their cosy relaxing sofas where you will soon recover with a drink in your hand.
Or stretch out on the sofas with the papers and a perfectly mixed Bloody Mary. If the mood takes you, they even have a stash of board games - best served with a bottle of red and a few friends. Add, a pub garden that ticks all the boxes: large, attractive, and a great spot to soak up the rays when the sun makes an appearance. It's also equipped with a useful heated cover so you can drink and dine alfresco to your heart's content in all weathers. A dog friendly pub, they happily welcome your fourlegged friend to the party.
Polished wood, stripped floors, free WiFi, comfy seating and roomy tables set the relaxed welcoming atmosphere, somewhere to settle back, meet friends, snack, dine or just call in for a drink.
There is always something going on at The Flyer, every Wednesdays is Burger night with a fantastic choice of burgers, in addition to the usual menu, and every Tuesday is Wine Club.
Talking of drinks, The Flyer prides itself on their impressive pick of interesting drinks. English potato vodka, at least 20 speciality beers and ciders on tap. From black spiced-rum to Belgian fruit beer, from locally brewed Real Ales to a world of wines, their bar offering is deliciously diverse and with seasonal homemade soft-drinks thrown into the mix, there's something for everyone. If you fancy a bite to eat with your favourite tipple, try their regularly changing bar snacks, such as homemade Gloucester Old Spot sausage rolls or salt & pepper squid - perfect with a pint of craft beer. The meat or veggie boards are perfect to share over a bottle of wine with friends. Wanting something more substantial? The Flyer does great British pub-food, modern classics and seasonal dishes made with carefully sourced ingredients, cooked to order and served simply. We also make sandwiches worth taking a lunch break for. And for an indulgent finish to any meal, order our salted caramel & chocolate tart.” Sundays at The Flyer are something rather special. Unwind at the end of the week with one of their legendary Sunday roasts choose from 21-day aged beef with homemade Yorkshire pudding, Shropshire chicken, Norfolk pork with crackling or a cashew, walnut and cheddar nut roast, fresh veggies, real roasties, proper gravy and yummy puds.
