Baron Bhattacharyya [IPGSQIW MRGVIEWIH MRZIWXQIRX
MR XVEMRMRK ERH XIGLRSPSK] Baron Bhattacharyya, of Moseley welcomes increased investment in training and technology and a change of culture for UK business. He urges the Government to make the economic crisis a turning point for British manufacturing. Lord Bhattacharyya, the influential businessman who played a key role in enabling car giant Tata to take over Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) came to Birmingham from Bangladesh in his 20’s; becoming Professor of Manufacturing Systems at the University of Warwick in 1980, and founding the Warwick Manufacturing Group in the same year. From its inception WMG’s mission has been to improve the competitiveness of organisations around the world through the application of value added innovation, new technologies and skills deployment, bringing academic rigour to industrial and organisational practice. He is critical of business attitudes in the UK, saying: “Let me tell you how companies work – it's about short-termism. You're a chief executive, your term is three or four years, and you want to maximise your bonus. So what do you do? You bring in consultants who restructure the group and shut businesses rather than making them work. So the results look good this year and next, but forget about the long term.” “For decades, the national hunger for a fast buck meant that longstanding industries were decimated. British expertise vanished and excellence in technology went overseas. We outsourced our industrial heritage and now we are paying the price.” He argued “The British economy still suffers from low rates of capital investment, as it has for 50 years. In this country there has been no mechanism, other than government subsidy, for R&D. For small manufacturing enterprises to be the seedbed of innovation, exploitation of their ideas requires investment from larger, generally foreign, firms." Companies locate their R&D where they feel the expertise exists, so it is important to invest in education for engineering and technology, to create a workforce capable of meeting the needs of industry. Lord Bhattacharyya said “On the vocational side there is a shortage of technicians and people below graduate level, we produce enough graduates, they just don't go into engineering.” So the new education programme, the Advanced Skills Accreditation Scheme (ASAS) which was developed by WMG and JLR to boost the skills of UK engineers working within the automotive supply chain and other hi-tech industries, is particularly good news. This sector-wide skills programme, led by Semta the sector skills council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies, is supported through the Government’s Growth and Innovation Fund with a £1m boost from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. The funding means the scheme can be open to companies of all sizes within the UK. The scheme is fully endorsed by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology and is expected to attract engineers from over 2000 companies in England who will undertake 5000 Master’s degree module places over the next two years.
Baron Bhattacharyya Lord Bhattacharyya, as Chairman of WMG comments “We are extremely pleased to be continuing our relationship with JLR, by developing this new scheme that all UK companies can take participate in. UK manufacturing is going to benefit from having many more highly trained engineers, who will help to reinvigorate the industry and improve the skills base”. He says, "In manufacturing there is no substitute for producing outstanding products, well-designed and of high reliability, based on a sound understanding of market needs and produced at a price that smart customers find attractive. When times are tough, manufacturing companies need to be bold. It is a time for innovation, new investment in R&D, effective design, efficient processes and exceptional reliability. From bold innovation will come brilliant technology and spectacularly successful companies that create wealth.” Image courtesy of WMG

WYNNE-JONES IP knowledge secured
Innovative Tax Relief Schemes for SMEs Wynne Jones IP, the well established local firm of patent and trademark attorneys, are currently working with Hazlewoods, Dyson, Capital Law and HMRC to raise awareness of two important tax relief schemes available to businesses in the South West. Their two most recent ‘breakfast briefings’ attracted upwards of 60 delegates, primarily from manufacturing firms based in Cheltenham, Cardiff and the surrounding areas, and highlighted Government tax-saving schemes aimed at encouraging R&D and innovation, with the goal of creating and retaining jobs and manufacturing capacity in the UK.
Establishing and exploiting your Intellectual Property rights can be a minefield, but the attorneys at Wynne Jones IP will discuss your situation in confidence and will explain the avenues available. Their friendly and professional team will use their expertise to point you in the right direction. If your question involves R&D Relief or the ‘Patent Box’ they will also invite the specialist Tax-team at Hazlewoods to join the conversation – with your agreement of course!
For an initial free consultation Call: 01242 267600 Visit: www.wynne-jones.com
Research and Development (R&D) Relief reduces an organisation's tax bill by offsetting qualifying R&D costs against profit, even where the research may not have been successful. If the organisation qualifies as an SME, and is not making any profit against which to offset their R&D costs, they may choose instead to receive a direct tax credit, by way of a cash sum paid by HMRC. The other scheme being explained at the briefings is the new ‘Patent Box’ and how it interacts with R&D Relief. With effect from April 2013 a new 10% tax rate available under the ‘Patent Box’ offers additional relief for companies holding the Intellectual Property rights for any patented products, components or processes. This works alongside R&D Relief and changes the whole rationale behind patenting an invention. Instead of simply providing legal protection, obtaining a patent is now a key element in your financial and commercial strategy. In order for companies to take full advantage of these tax breaks, professional advice is essential. Wynne-Jones IP has over 45 years of delivering excellence in Intellectual Property and has an excellent reputation, both in the UK and overseas. They have offices in Cheltenham, Cardiff, Telford and Wrexham, and an impressive client list including multi-nationals, household names, SMEs, large technology-based companies and universities.

SUof touris The country is preparing itself for the biggest-ever consumer spend - £750 million - thanks to forthcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. Visa, responsible for the number-crunching, says the recordbreaking boost will deliver a sustained stimulus worth a total of £5.1 billion to the UK economy by 2015. But you don’t need to look ahead to gauge the effect of such massive events - the benefits are being felt now as the venues and athletes’ accommodation are built, the transport infrastructure is put into place and all the marketing, sponsorship opportunities made available. Not to mention hospitality, accommodation, catering and all the sectors associated with accommodating the millions of visitors destined to descend on the capital, while around the country thousands hold their own Olympic-themed events and attractions. Equally, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is having a similar impact, with touring celebratory exhibitions, such as the Leonardo da Vinci drawings, attracting huge crowds wherever they visit. There’s no doubt these milestone events are providing a pivotal impact across the nation, bringing welcome cheer to what’s been a pretty depressed psyche for the last few years and, even more importantly, a massive boost to businesses across the board during challenging times.

But you don’t need an event - or attraction - on an Olympian scale to benefit to an area as the small Welsh town of St Anspah knows. A recent report in the Rhyl Journal revealed that although 120 coaches a month passed through the cathedral town to visit a nearby shopping outlet – hardly a traditional ‘tourist attraction’ few stopped. The paper was reporting on a meeting in which the community discussed ways to encourage them to do so, such as studying how to improve the infrastructure linking the two areas, partnerships between businesses and investigating the construction of a visitor centre and toilets at the cathedral. Having a major attraction or event taking place on your doorstep isn’t, then, just about good times for the local leisure industry. It can mean employment for thousands, especially if it is developed in a part of the country with limited job opportunities which, again, has the ripple effect of bringing further economic benefits and can be used to further public policy in urban regeneration and rural development. As a whole, the tourism and leisure sector undoubtedly employs high numbers and encourages people to spend money, but it also contributes to an attractive environment, raises a region's international profile and attracts international investment. Take Stratford-upon-Avon, which exists as it is, pretty much, because a famous Elizabethan playwright was born there. If any place understands the beneficial effects of visitor attractions or events it’s this one - but even Stratford was surprised when then Dr Who, David Tenant arrived to play Hamlet at the town’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It experienced a mini tourist boom, with thousands arriving specifically to see the actor on stage but then staying a day or more, with the resulting increased business attributed directly to ‘The David Tenant Effect’.

s e i m o n o c e l loca Heritage affects the visitor economy still further, with museums, flagship libraries and archives playing a central role while historic and civic buildings, their collections, and the services they offer are fundamental to the lives of the surrounding communities and a key part of the tourism industry. Warwickshire’s Stoneleigh Manor, for example, has 800 years of rich history for the heritage visitor to explore but is also a vibrant business hub, hosting corporate events, weddings, and conferences, all of which have a significant impact on the local economy. It’s places such as these, that are drawing in millions of visitors throughout the country, driving economic recovery in places that have not traditionally been tourist destinations and helping to restore local pride and identity.
Examples of this effect don’t come much bigger than the Eden Project in Cornwall. In 1995 it was a working china pit nearing the end of its economic life. Since it opened in 2001 what is effectively the world’s largest greenhouse has bought in well over £900 million to the local economy and sustained around 3,000 jobs. These benefits are also felt by its 2,500 local suppliers and a range of other businesses such as hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, pubs and taxis. The attraction attributes much of its success to its close working relationships with the community, as well as with the tourism industry and cultural agencies. On the Living Places website, a report on understanding the local economic impact of the Eden project remarks: ‘No organisation works in isolation, we are all inextricably linked.” It’s a statement that holds true for any attraction or big event.
At Swanpool Beach Café they are very proud of their friendly, fun and welcoming environment. The café provides good home made food and cakes, and a range of individual quirky ice-creams. The café is open all year round for visitors, and is also much enjoyed by local residents. Other facilities include a crazy-golf course, which is open all year round and provides a perfect blend of challenge and entertainment, while during the summer weekends, there is a fun bouncy castle for the children. Swanpool Beach is more than just a beach; it is a family friendly destination, with something for everyone. The lagoon was formed by a bar of sand and shingle being thrown up by the sea over the entrance of a small creek, creating a freshwater lake. In 1826 a culvert was built to reduce the water level, which also allowed sea water to enter the pool at high tide, resulting in a lagoon of mixed salt and fresh water. The area has always been popular with locals and visitors alike; so much so, that even local people often have to wait several years before getting the chance to rent one of the 22 beach huts!
On the beach you can hire out windbreaks, parasols, and deckchairs, and for the more active, kayaks, wetsuits and body-boards are available. Elemental U.K. Watersports School is based at Swanpool Beach all year round, and caters for groups large and small, teaching; sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, coasteering and raft building. Little White Alice Your Wild Cornish Retreat
Green and luxury, two words that don’t usually go together, but the founders of multi award winning eco complex Little White Alice, have resolved the seeming contradiction. Little White Alice is a 5* complex of 6 luxury eco self catering cottages set in 25 acres of land with its own natural swimming pool and wood burning hot tub. Within walking distance of Stithians Lake and the award winning Golden Lion Inn, and just 10 miles from both North and South coast, this is an ideal location for exploring West Cornwall.
The aim of the founders, Simon Toft and Rosie Hadden, is to promote sustainable living, by providing low carbon yet luxurious holidays, to enable guests to experience first hand just how comfortable and pleasant living in a low carbon house can be. They first opened their doors to guests in March 2011, having spent the previous two years building the cottages to fit comfortably into the landscape on the site of an old farm. The cottages are built to the highest energy efficient standards, blending natural materials and bespoke furnishings with technology and innovation. Rosie said: “We have tried throughout the project to marry handcrafted individuality with
sustainability and above all luxurious comfort. This has included using local craftspeople to hand make our kitchens, our hot tub, our basketry, our glass placemats, etc”. Simon and Rosie bubble over with enthusiasm for their project. Simon said: “We are challenging the standards of most listed green holidays and have been delighted to be placed in the top 20 of The Guardian Green Travel List 2011 as well as winning Gold for Sustainable Tourism in the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2011. We have also won Silver in Sustainable Tourism in The South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2011-12. Our site aims to produce all its own energy and water so your holiday can be as green as possible. You can even plant a tree in our new woodland to help offset your journey to us.” The Ecologist declared; "The perfect country escape, Cornwall's Little White Alice is a green retreat combining style and sustainability" While the Green Traveller wrote: "In the short period of time that they have been open, Rosie and Simon have done much to create a small slice of heaven high up in the Cornish countryside." Little White Alice can accommodate couples and families, and makes a wonderful venue for family gatherings, or romantic escapes. Little White Alice is also ideal for intimate alternative creative weddings, civil partnerships and celebrations with between 2-30 guests. Old Market Inn Bar, Hotel and Restaurant The Old Market Inn Hotel and Restaurant in Holsworthy has won the North Devon CAMRA Pub of the Year, for a record breaking third year running, putting them in a good position to aim for the regional and even, the national title. The Old Market Inn is a free house specialising, as you would expect from a CAMRA winner, in Real Ales. They carry a selection of 9 different ales at all times, 3 on draught, and 6 on gravity, with the beers often needing to be changed as frequently as 2 or 3 times a day. Joint landlord Lee Sycamore tells us that he likes to features as many good local ales as possible, but does include the occasional surprise. They are fortunate to have a number of excellent breweries on their doorstep and regularly feature brews from Holsworthy Ales, Longhill Breweries, Skinners, Bay, and Tintagel Breweries. They gained the Casque Mark accreditation “For pubs which serve the perfect pint,” in August 2007. The Old Market Inn is run as a family partnership between Pat and Dave Sycamore and their son Lee. Although Pat and Dave were new to the licenced trade, Lee had over 20 years experience in the industry. Lee had worked as a manager for both independent houses and chains, as he put it, “making money for other people”, and had always wanted his own pub. When the opportunity arose to buy the inn, in September 2006 the family took the collective plunge. Despite being told by the previous landlord that they wouldn’t be able to sell Real Ale in Holsworthy, the family had two hand pumps installed before they even re-opened, the other pumps soon followed. Their success led to the creation of their very own beer brewed just for them. 'BOMB' (Best Old Market Bitter) which is proving very popular. The Old Market Inn offers a warm and friendly welcome. Besides the award winning ales they stock a good range of ciders and an extensive selection of wines and spirits. The newly opened cocktail bar is proving popular with locals and visitors alike as the barman is an expert mixologist and will blend either a traditional cocktail or something a little different, great fun to try. The relaxed and informal atmosphere is maintained in the dining area which features an extensive menu focussing on locally sourced produce and excellent service. There is a good evening bar snack menu and the Sunday Carvery is always very popular, featuring a choice of roasts from local farms, crispy roast potatoes and plenty of fresh vegetables. The restaurant is available for private functions.
There are three bedrooms at the Old Market Inn which are all en-suite with large showers. The new and superbly furnished bedrooms offer a unique blend of comfort with stylish design. The Old Market Inn is all about warm hospitality, good food and great beer.

building. Some rooms have 4 poster beds, all have merino wool blankets, goose feather and down pillows, covered with Egyptian cotton, to ensure a good night’s sleep in the high quality beds. The restaurant renovation has resulted in a stylish Brasserie, named “Brasserie Brunel” as a tribute to the famous designer. They serve a delicious selection of traditional English dishes and superb French cuisine. Choose from the a la carte menu, or until 7pm from the prix fixe menu from £9.95 for two courses. The hotel has a superb reputation for its food, especially its steaks. You can enjoy a drink, light meal, coffee or afternoon tea served in the welcoming 1846 bar. As part of its ongoing upgrading, the hotel’s Club House Bar, will become a quiet refuge for the hotel’s residents.
In the heart of Bath, England's only World Heritage City, the award winning Royal Hotel, designed by Brunel, and established in 1846, has been welcoming visitors for over 160 years.
The Royal is ideally placed for shopping, the Roman Baths, the Comedy Festival and the Christmas Market. Since 1995, when the hotel came into the ownership of Ron Zanre and Patrick Mc Guire, The Royal has benefited from a continuous programme of investment, culminating in a major re-branding and refurbishment in 2007.

MOUTH-WATERING food from around the world is tempting diners to a Devon pub that couldn’t be more English. The Old Rydon Inn is a Grade II-listed farmhouse which was part of a manor from the reign of Henry II up to the 18th century, but its menus are inspired by food tasted by its seasoned traveller owners Charlie and Amy Tinnyunt. Mediterranean, Indonesian, American and a locally-renowned full English Sunday roast, can all be found beneath its welcoming roof. There’s even a thriving Thai takeaway service. “We serve good, honest homemade food,” declares Charlie. “Menus are dependent on season but are inspired by mine and Amy’s extensive travels in which we have sampled some of the most interesting and tasty foods in the world.”
Visiting the Old Rydon Inn, at Kingsteignton, is a treat in itself, not least for experiencing the warm welcome from any of the staff of 22, which includes six chefs, among them Charlie and Amy. It consists of a collection of different dining areas, each providing a unique and experience, with the restaurant lounge and dining room in the oldest part of the building and still with the original early 16th century elm screens. The restaurant, although ‘newer’, is still more than 150 years old and features a mediaeval 50ft well. “We also have a beautiful conservatory brimming with plants, a bar and apple loft with roaring open fires and a garden bar with Chesterfield sofas, open fire and doors out onto the walled garden, which is perfect for summer evening dining” reveals Charlie. A further room accommodates private dining for up to 18 guests but the Old Rydon Inn is also perfect for larger events including weddings, christenings, wakes, birthdays, anniversaries and reunions. “Whether it’s a sit-down meal, buffet, barbecue or hog roast, we can provide the perfect bespoke wedding function for your big day,” promises Charlie.
They include Mediterranean Beef Stifado, Indonesian Mie Goreng, American-style real beef burgers amd traditional English steak pie while Sunday roast is served with dishes brimming with roasted potatoes, Yorkshire Puddings, jugs of gravy and at least eight different freshly cooked vegetables. The takeaway features traditional Thai tastes such as Massaman lamb curry, Thai beef salad, crispy pork belly and scallop salad with a sweet lime and chilli dressing, chilli chicken stir fry, Pad Thai and lots more. “All meat and vegetables are locally sourced from carefully selected suppliers with some, including fresh herbs, handpicked from 'mum’s' garden,” adds Charlie.
“We have room for up to 60 guests inside and 150 outside plus plenty of space for live music, a disco or other entertainment of your choice. Our garden room can be hired for up to 50 guests while the restaurant holds up to 30.

Of course, being an inn, it’s not all about the food. The Old Rydon’s bar is a popular meeting point for locals, all eager to sup from a choice of several local ales - specifically Old Rydon Ale, brewed exclusively for the pub - and ciders, specialist German beers and a selection of wines. It’s that regular local ale knowledge from patrons, combined with regular wine tastings that means there are always new and interesting additions to the wine list and pumps. www.steersgreengrocers.com

COOKERY SCHOOL
The newest concept in corporate incentives and team building activities has come to Bristol.
activity all under one roof. Delegates are normally grouped into guided teams of four. Everyone has to work as a team and actually communicate with each other; to achieve an enjoyable edible result. With careful planning team members can be brought together who might normally have very little contact with each other. Challenges and cook-offs can be incorporated to give the events an exciting extra edge. Each bespoke event is tailored to the taste buds of the individual client company, and ranges through sushi rolling, bread making, pasta master classes, Mediterranean cuisine, fish cookery, Thai, Jamaican, Indian, whatever appeals to your team, 102’s talented chefs will show you how. All classes, courses and events involve tasting, but most include eating what you’ve made in the class, so at the end of a few hours in the kitchen, you’ll be able to enjoy the results in a beautiful, relaxing dining area.
We are all used to the idea of a business lunch or breakfast meeting, or wining and dining special customers, but a Bristol company is taking this link further by combining corporate events and team building with the popularity of cooking.
As an extra special incentive or a memorable experience for valued clients the chef’s table provides a fabulous food and wine experience. Up to 14 guests can enjoy a bespoke menu using the finest local produce served with wines specifically picked by the sommelier to perfectly compliment each course. The chef’s table is an exciting experience, where diners interact with the chefs and participate in the buzz of a professional kitchen in action.
The increasing interest in food and wine is amply demonstrated by the number of cookery programmes on television these days. As cookery is an activity that anyone can participate in and enjoy regardless of age, fitness or experience, such popularity has led to the growth of team building through cookery.
During May 2012, 102 Cookery school will host cookery showcases every Saturday for the Bristol public to visit the venue and view the fantastic Samsung branded facilities. There will also be opportunities to meet and cook with leading chefs.
Nailsea Electrical, well known for their state of the art kitchen appliances have joined forces with exciting manufacturer Samsung to open the 102 cookery school at 102 Gloucester Road, in a striking purpose designed facility, within a superb church conversion. The cookery school features top notch, Jamie Oliver-endorsed Samsung kitchen appliances including Dual Cook ovens, induction hobs and Steam Compacts; so as well as learning new skills, everyone will have a chance to use the best quality hobs and ovens that money can buy.

ANDREWS
QUALITY MEATS Andrew Sears and Andy Ayris opened their first traditional butchers shop in Highworth in February, 1995 out of a shared passion for quality meat from local farmers that has been responsibly reared and treated with care. At Andrews it is all about the quality of the meat, and with both partners having been in the meat trade since leaving school, and Andy Sears coming from a butchery family background they have a wealth of experience and expertise. No one else touches their meat in preparation; they take the animals to their abattoir at Wooton Basset and butcher and bone the meat themselves in-house. Based in Wiltshire, they opened a second high street shop, in Marlborough in September 2011; they offer a range of top quality, locally produced meat, poultry and game at competitive prices from both shops. All their beef has been hung for 28 days, to ensure the very best flavour and texture. They make their own hand made pies, sausage rolls, tasty burgers and a superb range of sausages including the ever popular, “The Bloody Lovely Sausage”. Such a wide range of delicious home prepared, award winning cold meats is always available that customers are spoilt for choice; you can even try some at lunchtime in a generously filled crusty baguette. Their friendly experienced team are always happy to help and advise, and to prepare a particular cut or joint especially for you, if necessary. The partners are proud to have overcome the many challenges of the last 17 years, to have beset their industry, ranging from B.S.E, the beef on the bone ban, the Foot and Mouth crisis and the current recession. Andy Sears is very optimistic about the future, saying: “I firmly believe we will come out of it a stronger business than when we went in.” He
maintains that the secret of their success has been maintaining the quality of their product and establishing good customer and working relationships. Andrews’ successful Hog Roast business caters for anything up to 120 people. They are also able to supply Lamb, and Venison, and Pork or Beef rolls and salads. Entertaining? Why not let them make you a Beef Wellington, a Crown of Lamb or a Banjo of Pork, which when marinated and cooked slowly, is absolutely delicious, and becoming very popular!
10109 2pgs:HorseWorld 13/08/2012 12:41 Page 2
Their plans for the future include advertising more home deliveries from Highworth and Marlborough this year and running a course of butchery classes at Marlborough. Always keen to support their local community and charities in the area, Andy Sears will be running in the 2012 London Marathon in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre.

saturated fats than olive oil, high in the good monounsaturated fats and an excellent source of Vitamin E. The difference between industrially produced oil, and a single cold pressed Rapeseed oil, is like comparing chalk and cheese, and Andy was sure that he could convince people of the merits of his English farm oil, over cheap processed products and Olive oil.
Fussels Fine Foods produce a single estate cold fresh pressed Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil, and a range of dressings, mayonnaises, infused oils and sauces made from it. Andy Fussell’s family have been farming land in Somerset for generations and are at the heart of the village community in Rode. As a farmer, who is passionate about sustainable farming and the values of good food, Andy created Fussels Fine Foods to share his love of the land and the fruits of his labour directly with the consumer.
The word, helped by a Gold award from the Taste of the West last year and a two star gold from the Guild of Fine Food, is spreading about the outstanding quality of the product. Already well known amongst farm shops and delicatessens throughout the area, Tesco’s and Waitrose are stockists. They have also become well established amongst the local catering trade, and supply a number of well known restaurants in Bath and the surrounding area, including Demuths, the Assembly Rooms, and the Pump rooms to name but a few. Their success is based upon the quality of the product, a single cold press that is only pressed to order so that the oil sent out is always fresh. Rapeseed oil has many benefits; it has only half the saturated fat of Olive Oil, and ten times the level of Omega 3, and retains its integrity at a higher heat making it much more versatile in the kitchen.
It was five years ago that Andy decided that rather than sell his carefully grown rapeseed oil to large contractors who would treat it with heat and chemicals in processes that de-natured the essential qualities of the oil, that he would press it himself. The company are building on their success by introducing new lines and extending their distribution opportunities. Please remember that if you can’t find a local stockist, that you can easily order on line.
Andy says: “I believe in high quality simple food that has provenance, from sowing to cold pressing and bottling, everything about my rapeseed oil happens here on the farm. The fantastic healthy qualities of Rapeseed oil have been a secret for too long and my rapeseed oil is a real English alternative to olive oil. It has more generous servings of the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6; it is lower in bad

A health club with a difference, one that is owned by its members! The club was originally set up in 1983 to run as a private squash and health club. In 1996 it changed to a not for profit member run health club. There is a committee of members who make the strategic decisions for the club, through committee meetings and the AGM, but they leave the day to day running of the club to the manager, Steve Pitts, who is an experienced health and fitness professional.
Steve explained: “We target the exerciser who is short on time by offering personalised, quick and effective exercise programs. We also target the new to or non exerciser by setting up the gym in a non intimidating user-friendly way, working with local GP’s and making sure we have plenty of staff available to spend time with our members.” The club offers one to one personal training if required and a range of fitness classes to suit all activity levels. Steve is very proud that since he started with the club 2 years ago, membership has grown; people obviously enjoy belonging to a friendly members owned health club.

Welsh Back is the longest established health club in Bristol. Being member owned creates a completely different vibe to the often rather intimidating gyms that are part of a large chain. Because the members are so actively involved there is a really warm friendly feeling in the club. The whole team contributes to the welcoming atmosphere you experience at the club, by being friendly and helpful, and doing their best to make sure that through enjoying your time at the club, you get the most out of your exercise. Whether it’s just a quick game of squash or a complete fitness programme, Welsh Back has something for everyone.

Seahopper Sailing; as an island nation it’s in our blood it’s said. On a sparkling summer morning, the thought of enjoying the water, scudding along before the wind, appeals to most of us. The sheer paraphernalia of it all though, trailers, finding a slipway, or paying mooring charges definitely does not. So a folding boat that can be transported on a roof rack is an exciting concept.

Seahopper Folding Boats manufacture dinghies from top grade marine ply which are very robust and stable on the water, and are extremely portable. A Seahopper Folding Boat can be carried on a roof rack, in a caravan or motor-home, launched from a river bank or beach and stored in a garage or shed without taking up much space.

Dinghy builder Steve Rea developed the Seahopper at his boat yard in Wellington Somerset. He says: “Due to their versatility, our boats are used world-wide by boat owners as tenders on yachts, sail trainers at sailing clubs, by families for fun, by fishermen to get to those inaccessible swims and by public services as emergency boats.” Seahoppers come in three sizes, the 6ft 8ins Crafty Scamp, the 7ft 10ins Nifty Fifty and the 10ft Kondor. All the models can be purchased with or without sailing gear and can also be purchased in a DIY kit form. A family sailing dinghy you can take on holiday packed flat on your roof rack - and assemble in minutes, the Seahopper could be the answer to your sailing dreams.

This is a business that can definitely go large - but Frenzy Designs is for signs big or small, traditional or high-tech, the only thing that is fixed is its dedication to supplying all its customers with a personal service and a reliable quality product at an affordable price. Mr Bryant started in business in 1981 to provide traditional signwriting and over the years the company has evolved to handle all types of sign work. With advances in technology, Frenzy Designs moved into computerised digital signage, supplying the latest digital print and cut vinyl graphics for customers across the country, including high street shops, pubs and restaurants to retail parks and property developments. Still an independent family based business, operating from the Timsbury Workshop Estate, the company has since been joined by partner, Mr Matthew Pope, who comes from a background of modern signmaking with a wealth of experience in new technology and techniques. THE BRISTOL Hippodrome is no stranger to headlinemaking appearances, so when they needed a showstopping sign system to help promote its latest production, they knew just which company to give top billing.
All in a day’s work now is producing and installing eye-catching signs, vehicle graphics, floor, wall and window graphics and banners and display products. It has also diversified into providing work and leisurewear, which it can personalise with logos, text and images providing the perfect outfit for corporate events, society days and holidays or hen and stag parties. Passionate about providing great service, Frenzy Designs is all about helping its customers stand out from the crowd and is as keen to focus on the needs of its long-term customers - some of whom have been on board since the 1980s and ‘90s as it is on attracting new clients. What ever you want to promote, follow the signs to Frenzy Designs which can help you do it.

Bath-based Frenzy Designs’ sign solution proved such a hit that, six years later, it’s still in place at the theatre. “It allows for three 2.5sq mtr signs, which are changed on a weekly basis, to be raised and lowered to the ground via a track and pulley mechanism which we designed, tested, fabricated and installed,” explains company founder Mr Val Bryant. “Continuing to use this system at the Hippodrome allows us to change the show production promotional sign without the need for high level access equipment, thus enabling the theatre to comply with Health and Safety regulations and save on access equipment costs.” The project, he’s proud to acknowledge, is one of the company’s biggest successes - but he’s equally proud of his team’s ability to successfully meet what was also one of its biggest challenges - a massive sign on the banks of the Thames, in Greenwich, to promote a large leisure retail park. “It measured 30mtrs x 7mtrs,” remembers Mr Bryant. “We were directly involved with the design of a steel structure, the panel construction, graphics, final groundwork and installation.”

Over the past 37 years Carters have built up strong and effective relationships with suppliers. Carters Packaging Ltd is the company operated by brothers Andrew and Barny Carter – the second generation of the business started by

their parents Rick & Maureen. Having moved to Cornwall in 1975, Rick & Maureen were persuaded to take half a pallet of polythene bags with them by a friend who was producing them in his garage. They did so and began to sell from the barn of the ramshackle farmhouse they had bought. Soon the pallet was empty and the origins of CPL were born! Fresh stock was ordered and over the years the product range increased almost organically. Little did they know that some 37 years later the company Carters Polythene would have evolved into Carters Packaging Ltd, operated by their two youngest sons and servicing customers nationwide.
“Our large stock holding allows us to offer nationwide next-day delivery through our own fleet of vehicles and network of logistics partners. Usually, where a product is a nonstock item we will bring it into stock if it is an on-going requirement of a customer, to eliminate lead times”.
Within the food packaging sector, Carters can offer an impressive range of products which cover all applications from preparation through to service and clean down: bags, boxes, sheets, cards, wraps, boards, cutlery, stirrers, straws, microwave and hot food containers, pails, jars, hinged containers, napkins, pizza boxes, hot and cold cups, and all types of containers for soups, salads and sandwiches. They also supply a full range of cleaning, hygiene and janitorial products – such as sanitisers, paper disposables and waste sacks.
Since taking over the reins, after buying the firm outright 10 years ago, Andrew & Barny Carter have consolidated the business to focus solely on the supply of packaging materials which has become both their passion and area of expertise. Operating from the heart of Cornwall in Redruth, they have 45,000 sq ft of premises where they stock a huge range of products, enabling them to react immediately to customer requirements.
This availability of stock, fast delivery and sheer range of products, coupled with Carters capability to provide all manner of bespoke and printed items is resulting in them increasingly becoming the single source supplier to more and more companies, from multinational brands to cottage industries and individuals. The brothers have assembled a team at Carters Packaging Ltd who are passionate about the company and share an enthusiasm to achieve the company objectives – namely to constantly improve the products and service to enable them to become an indispensable asset to their customers’ supply chains. “We do this by consistently delivering quality products on time at competitive pricing and backed up by
As one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets, Carters’ immediate plans include marketing campaigns and the creation of a new website: “We threw our website up several years ago, so now it is antiquated and does not reflect our product range, capabilities or ethos. Hopefully we’ll go live with a comprehensive new site by the end of the year. In the mean time, we would welcome the opportunity to quote for any packaging requirements – be they foodservice, retail or industrial”

Visit the Eden Project this year and be part of a fantastic programme of events and activities. Voted Best UK Leisure Attraction by the British Travel Awards for 2012 and already shortlisted for 2013, there is nowhere quite like the Eden Project. The Eden Project is a world renowned environmental centre and visitor attraction in Cornwall comprising a series of domes which house an incredible range of environments and plants, in three main areas - the Rainforest Biome, Mediterranean Biome, and Outdoor Biome. Tim Smit, now Sir Tim, conceived the idea for the project, when while restoring the Lost Gardens of Heligan in the
early 90s, he became fascinated with stories that connected plants to people and brought them alive. The Eden Project does much more than offer a memorable day out in Cornwall. Visitors experience the world's “largest rainforest in captivity with steamy jungles and waterfalls, and a rainforest lookout that takes you above the treetops. The Rainforest Biome recreates the natural environment of a tropical rainforest. The hot, humid enclosure contains over 1,000 trees and other plants from rainforests in South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Tropical Islands. In fact, the Biome houses over 2,000 species of carefully selected tropical plants in an environment that allows them to reach their full potential.

by following nature trails that wind over 30 acres (12 hectares) of land. The newest exhibit here is the Sense of Memory Garden, which was previously on display at Chelsea, and has now come to Eden. The stunning new garden features water pools lined with Bodmin Moor granite and filled with some of Cornwall’s most popular plants. The 22 metre oasis, laden with fan palms, bamboo and rhododendron, was inspired by Cornwall’s wild landscape and sub-tropical gardens, where the designer spent his holidays. The award winning landscape architect Tom Hoblyn, who designed the garden, said: “I am absolutely delighted that my Chelsea garden has found a caring, adoptive family at the Eden Project. A Cornish-themed show garden, using Cornish plants and Cornish materials, going back to Cornwall – it’s a fantastic feeling. I feel as if my family heritage has been honoured.
Eden always has a fantastic programme of events and entertainment going on, from the ice rink in the winter months to concerts and evening gigs throughout the year, there is always a real buzz about the place with loads of different activities to enjoy. Eden’s cafes and restaurants offer fresh, healthy food, sourced ethically, using local, seasonal or fairly traded products wherever possible. From breakfasts to afternoon tea, savoury or sweet, there is something for all tastes, with the Eden Bakery in the link building between the Biomes creating mouthwatering dishes right in front of your eyes. Alternatively, try the Eden Med, serving al fresco meals in the Mediterranean Biome for that authentic holiday feeling!
eden ba kery
Sir Tim Smit, Eden’s Chief Executive, Development, said: “We liked this garden the moment we saw it and felt it could find a home at Eden with its water reflecting the Biomes.” The plants for the new garden have been grown at Eden and chosen to replicate the spirit of the Chelsea garden. In order to extend the seasonal interest of the garden several new species have been added to the original planting plan. See cutting-edge architecture and buildings, stunning garden displays all year round, and world-class sculpture and art, including the Driftwood Horse, WEEE Man, the Bee, and Adam and Eve.

WE LOVE FOOD AS MUCH AS WE LOVE LIFE ITSELF.
Don't miss the great play event for kids and families inspired by The Lorax – this summer’s blockbuster movie with a really cool environmental message, in UK cinemas on 27 July. Like the Lorax, who's the guardian of the forest, the Eden team love plants. They also love encouraging kids to connect with nature, so they are putting on activities that will not only be loads of fun but will also get them thinking. It’ll make for a summer day out they’ll never forget! Explore a Lorax-ified Eden Project, from fluffy “Truffula” trees to a huge “Once-ler” Tower on the wall of the Core building, and have a hoot with a range of games and craft activities: Go on the Lorax trail; follow the trail through the Biomes to find out how we can live in harmony with plants. Discover all kinds of fascinating and useful plants – from cocoa to cork – and finish by making a pledge to the Lorax.

Listen to the story; Eden’s Pollinators will be telling the original, hilarious story by Dr Seuss. What better place to enjoy a summer’s evening than Eden? They’ll be open until 8pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the summer holidays (24 July – 30 August,) offering live music, street theatre, barbecues and even more Lorax fun! The Lorax movie has a great message of respecting plants and the environment, which, of course, is what they’re all about at Eden! The adventure follows Ted, a 12-year-old boy who lives in the very plastic town of Thneedville, where no plants grow. Ted (Zac Efron) is searching for a real Truffula tree, which will help him win the heart of Ashley (Taylor Swift), the girl of his dreams. Ted meets the strange character of the Once-ler, who tells him about his encounter with the Lorax (Danny DeVito) – an outspoken but lovable and furry guardian of the forest. The Once-ler tells how he regrets chopping down all the beautiful trees in the Lorax's Truffula valley to make a useless but highly profitable product, which in turn inspires Ted to restore balance to Thneedville. NoFit State Circus. The Eden Project is delighted to welcome the return of NoFit State Circus. After last year's sell-out Labyrinth show, NoFit State returns to Cornwall this summer with their brand new BIANCO show, produced especially for Eden. NoFit State is the leading large-scale contemporary circus company in the UK, and regularly performs internationally. A fusion of circus, music, dance and drama creating a sensory feast, NoFit State’s shows are subtle, sophisticated and unforgettable theatrical experiences. They combine breathtaking aerial acrobatics with poignant and poetic imagery, all accompanied by a fantastic live band.

For Your Space Collection, supplying vegetables for every type of gardening space, to name but a few. Suttons are very proud of their latest success story, their grafted vegetable plant collection. Using a unique grafting technique that commercial crop growers have used for some time now, Suttons Seeds offer the hobby gardener incredibly strong, healthy and vigorous vegetable plants that can produce up to 75% more crops than standard plants, have resistance to soil-borne pests and disease and can be grown outside! Suttons carried out independent market research in 2011, which showed that many gardeners were unsure about what to plant where, and when. The Company realised that there was a real need to help beginner and time-poor gardeners with their gardening decisions by providing them with easy to understand, ready-made solutions. So they created an easy-toshop, easy-to-grow collection specifically aimed at the beginner gardener. ‘Suttons Seeds Beginners Collection’, is a unique ‘Beginners Seed Collection’ which takes the mystery out of gardening and encourages novice gardeners to ‘grow their own’.

Each year Suttons review their seed collections to ensure that they are offering their customers the most up-to-date and best varieties. 2013 is no exception! They have over 70 new varieties to excite and encourage more people to ‘get growing’, including an exclusive new seed range developed in partnership with TV presenter and author, James Wong!
Suttons Seeds, established in 1806, is the most widely recognised and trusted brand name in top quality seeds, scoring 93% recognition from a recent survey.
Suttons was always the home of seeds, but now their extensive ranges offer something for everyone, from the specialist single species grower, the show or exhibition gardener, or the complete beginner with a small plot or even just a window box.
They have consistently led the way in supplying the very best flower and vegetable seed varieties, and over the last few years have diversified into seed starter propagation products and more recently, grafted vegetables plants. Suttons Seeds are a subsidiary company of Vilmorin Clause & Cie, one of the largest packet seed producers in the world, and remain one of the UK’s market leaders, supplying garden centre retailers, supermarkets, DIY multiples, and direct to consumers by mail-order. In addition to Suttons Seeds extensive range of packet seed (over 950 varieties!), they have diversified over recent years in response to market trends and consumer demand, and introduced some exciting innovations. By targeting different market sectors, Suttons have developed many new product ranges which have met with great success. For instance, Seeds Tapes and Mats, aimed at consumers with little time to spare, or not so nimble fingers; the Beginners Collection created to reward novice gardeners with early success; Speedy Veg designed to give gardeners healthy fast food; and the

The English love their gardens, whether it be a window box, a few patio tubs, roses, herbaceous borders, beautiful manicured lawns, wild flower meadows, herb gardens, patios, productive vegetable plots, rockeries, water gardens or a glorious mix, we all have our favourites. Expert horticulturist or simple potterer each of us takes pleasure from visiting a good garden centre, and that is just what Cleeve Nursery and Garden Centre is. Cleeve Nursery and Garden Centre is an independent business, owned and run by husband and wife team, Alan and Felicity Down, since 1983, and is as far removed from the large homogenised garden centres that proliferate around our towns and cities as you can imagine. Set in a 200 years old barn and stable full of character and charm, you can browse at your leisure among the complete range of tools, equipment, accessories, garden sundries, indoor plants and bulbs. Outside there is the main plant area, where there is a fantastic range of plants maintained to a high standard. They stock many varieties

If you are considering a larger project such as planting a fruit garden or herbaceous border they stock everything you need for that too. Almost all the herbaceous plants and a large percentage of the hardy shrubs are grown in their own nearby Long Acre Nursery (not open to the public). So they know the history of these plants and have great pride in their quality. All the hardy plants they offer for sale are covered by their usual guarantee. Throughout the year their friendly horticulturally qualified staff will be on hand to give free advice on what to plant where, as well as helping with any pest or disease problem. The Cleeve Nursery Border Design Service offers three levels of advice or planning. Using local knowledge and expertise to design a new area from scratch or revamp an existing garden. Even a small change can make a big difference and they are always happy to tailor their services to what you specifically need Since taking over Cleeve Nursery, Alan has been garden expert for Radio West and BBC Radio Bristol. For 6 years he, Felicity and Sue King presented from their garden the highly acclaimed HTV Garden Calendar programme every week. Since 2005, Alan has been the Western Daily Press gardening correspondent and his double page spread with useful tips and recommendations can be found there every Saturday.

Landscape Design EVERYTHING in the garden’s lovely for Blueprint Landscape Design - especially since it won Best Garden at this year’s prestigious Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) 2012 awards. The glittering ceremony, now in its 16th year and held at London’s Kensington Roof Gardens last March, recognises the very best landscape projects from across the country. Blueprint Landscape Design’s award-winner in the £20,000£30,000 category saw the transformation of the garden area of a former working mill just outside Bristol, incorporating a natural stream which emerges from underground and flows into the nearby River Chew.
Based in Brynland Avenue, Bristol, Blueprint Landscape Design is a professional practice dedicated to delivering exciting, stylish, high quality landscape solutions for domestic and commercial clients throughout Bristol, the South West and beyond. “We provide a friendly and flexible design service tailored to the specific needs of the customer, from initial on-site consultation through to contract supervision and completion,” says Jo. He established the company in 2004, having worked for many years as in-house designer for respected design/build company Hillier Landscapes - who constructed the APL award-winning garden. The following years have seen the company put down strong roots, growing steadily with the vast majority of enquiries coming through personal recommendation, and establishing a reputation for creating simple, elegant and unique gardens with a strong sense of place. “The practice is based on many years of experience gained on a wide range of projects, from large country gardens to small urban spaces,” says Jo. “While our work tends to have a contemporary feel, the overriding philosophy is always to produce solutions that are right for the particular client and site in question as we believe a successful garden should reflect the style and personality of the owner, relate sympathetically to the house or property and fit naturally into its surroundings.”
Built using sustainable materials, it reflects the Bristol company’s approach to all its landscape projects; to work with nature for the benefit of wildlife and the environment and use materials from ethical and sustainable sources. The garden was designed by Blueprint Landscape’s founder Jo Heath. “The site was particularly challenging with difficult access, awkward angles, significant changes of level and the risk of occasional flooding, however the underlying potential to create something special was clearly there from the start,” he reflects. “It’s a unique and unusual location, definitely not a standard type garden and I felt a particular responsibility to get it right and do justice to the setting.’’ But then Jo is no stranger to overcoming difficult situations, the wintery business climate proving a mere weed in the company’s sunny garden filled with ripe promise and blossoming opportunities. “We have had a very busy year, with a number of large and challenging projects,” he says, adding with a wry smile: “Steeply sloping sites in and around Bath seem to be a current trend for us!”

When the time comes to make the difficult decision, that staying at home is no longer appropriate, finding the right “home with the appropriate level of care is extremely challenging.
Stonehaven celebrates the individual, and aims to make each resident’s life the best it can be. The Stones really are a family who are delighted to be “making a difference. For more information about each home and the care provided, please visit their web site www.stonehaven.co.uk/care or telephone 01364 644208
How to judge what will suit you or your elderly family member over the long term? Will the standards of care, the food and hygiene criteria be all that you could wish for? One looks for a proper “home, not a faceless institution or a place run purely for profit, poorly staffed and equipped. The Stonehaven Care Group is able to answer all these worries. Regularly inspected by the Care Quality Commission, they are owned and run by the Stone family, and offer “taster days by arrangement. Stephen Stone, the founder, feels that being a family company is their greatest strength. Stonehaven is a small group of 8 homes in the beautiful South West and can accommodate up to 231 people across their range of comfortable, well run properties. Stephen says that while this size gives them economies of scale and allows for a broad spread of expertise among the team, they are still small enough to care. Once their two sons had left home for university Stephen and wife Dawn found that he was experiencing “Empty Nest Syndrome. They discussed what to do next and where their strengths lay, and agreed that the thing that they most enjoyed was caring for people. Stephen had always related well to older people, having been brought up by his grandparents, and Dawn’s background in catering meant that opening a care home seemed a natural fit for them both. In 1996 they opened the first home in Dartmouth “just to see how it went, soon afterwards homes 2 and 3 followed. By this stage they needed help, so their younger son Ralphe joined them; his organisational skills and his caring and compassionate nature have proved invaluable. As he helped with hands-on care, in the early days he has first hand experience of the actual daily tasks required in caring for elderly, and sometimes fragile, residents, and prioritises the one simple quality value, “will this improve the lifestyle experience of our residents? in every decision made. By 2004, homes 4 and 5 were opened and their elder son Nathan joined the company. Nathan’s Psychology degree and extensive retail management experience are directly relevant and a great asset, in ensuring that each resident gets the most out of their life. Dawn’s role is to regularly visits each Care Home to provide support and guidance where needed and to ensure that their rigorous standards are consistently met within each home, and to promote team-training programmes. She works closely with the CQC, seeing their input as useful in maintaining best practice.

medically safe and clinically proven to promote new hair growth, improve the health of the scalp by stimulating blood supply, increase the density of existing hair and stop hair loss. If hair loss is treated in the early stages; using a reputable DHT blocker and regular sessions on the hair laser lamp, the results can be phenomenal. Our hair is very important to most of us; it defines our image and is a major part in how we present ourselves. We are all familiar with the term “bad hair day, and a regular visit to the hairdresser or barber is one of the aspects of personal grooming that we are the least likely to forgo.
Hair transplants are an alternative for the most desperate hair loss sufferers, and offer a permanent solution, but there are many factors to consider, especially the age of the client and their particular pattern of baldness and whether further treatments may be needed. Landmark’s consultants are the industry experts and provide the only hair transplants of this quality in the UK.
How our hair looks plays a crucial part in our self esteem, so hair loss, for many, can be devastating. When you visit a Landmark clinic you can be assured of a professional, sympathetic approach from the team of specialists in the treatment of hair loss. Landmark will analyse your particular hair loss condition, and take into account a range of factors including your age, family history, medical history, your lifestyle, and what you are hoping to achieve. If they can grow back your naturally growing hair they will. When the client’s hair follicles are still intact, Landmark will encourage hair to re-grow by means of a multi-therapeutic programme. They use products and techniques that are

Coming up to two years ago Paul and Colleen Weber decided to start their own home based network marketing business with Forever Living Products and haven’t looked back. Paul had recently taken early retirement from a busy and stressful career in IT management and Colleen had taken a career break from her nursing profession some years earlier, but both felt they still had an awful lot to give and wanted to find a way of earning some extra income and to further develop their skills.
Paul and Colleen use the products themselves religiously. Drinking the Aloe Vera Gel every day they have noticed a tremendous improvement with their general health and wellbeing. Paul no longer suffers from aching knee joints, a legacy from his rugby playing days, and by combining one of the bee products no longer suffers with the annual debilitating symptoms of hay fever. Aloe vera is known to be great for modulating the immune system, neither have had cold’s since drinking the Gel and generally feel more energised and healthy.
When they were shown the business they felt they had nothing to lose and quickly saw what an amazing opportunity Forever Living offered. Although Paul and Colleen did not have any previous experience in this field, they were told that they would receive all the support they needed and would have access to as much training as they required and Forever Living has not failed to deliver on this promise. This is a company that really cares about its people and associates and continually invests in training to ensure that everyone is fully equipped with the tools to make them successful. Forever Living Products UK have the Government accreditation of Investors In People at Gold level for their commitment to support and training, and also were awarded Champion status which means they are a leading example for other companies in the UK. Hilton Herbs was founded by Hilary and Tony Self in 1990. Hilary had always had an interest in herbs and one day made up a mix for one of their own horses and as the mix proved so effective friends encouraged them to produce it on a commercial basis. When the business was started, in the depths of a recession, interest rates were a staggering 15%, and bank lending and support was not forthcoming, so they decided to take the plunge and go it alone. Growth was so rapid that Hilary and Tony decided to concentrate full-time on the business and swapped their Surrey farmhouse for a larger farm property in Somerset. In the intervening 22 years Hilton Herbs has expanded into a profitable SME with a team of 17 staff, manufacturing a range

Building for the future has never been more critical for the planet than before. Carbon footprints, energy consumption, and sustainability - you will have had to have been on a completely different planet not to have come across these already. The construction industry has a key role to play in this, with building projects being responsible for some 30% of global CO2 emissions and 40% of global resource consumption, according to one set of figures. Green building methods - an approach to building and architecture that favours environmentally sound and resourceefficient methods that last through a building’s lifecycle - far from being the ‘home-underground’ preserve of a bearded few, are now the commercial, industrial and public norm. But how to design a green building? This is where the services of green architects - specialists in designing architecture that is sustainable, non-harmful to the environment, and energy efficient - are now highly sought after. Most architects work in a way that pays heed to the environment, but those that define themselves specifically as green architects focus on designing buildings that are sustainable and will not harm the environment, even to the extent that the construction or adaptation of a building will work with the natural surroundings. Alongside a whole range of environmentally-friendly options, they will incorporate into the design energy efficient techniques, such as solar thermal or geothermal heating and cooling techniques, or the use of a type of wood, stone or other material. They will hold all the usual architectural qualifications but some go further and gain specific accreditations to underline their green or environmental knowledge.

So, how do you find a green architect? A quick look on the internet reveals many options and forums. AECB, the Sustainable Building Association (www.aecb.net) has a member search facility and the Royal Institute of British Architects (www.architecture.com) is an obvious stopping off point, but one of the best ways is to ask around for recommendations and draw up a list of potential candidates. Then it’s a case of taking all of them through your project, making a careful study of their portfolios and asking some pertinent questions, such as which green building techniques they favour and why. Other aspects to consider include: •
Energy efficiencies: Are there any you specifically want in your building and what does the architect have to say about these? Will they suggest alternatives or modifications?
•
The construction firm: Does the architect work with a builder who shares the green construction values?
•
Will you be able to work with these architect’s? Ask yourself if they really are listening to what you want or perhaps they’re too busy to devote the time you require spent on your project.
Of course, time spent visiting other green buildings designed by your potential architect and talking to those living in them is time well spent and should be done if at all possible. At the end of the day, the value of doing your own research on green buildings and current green building methods can’t be under-estimated as it will be you who will be using the space once it has been constructed or adapted. Some of the most beautiful buildings around are those which demonstrate that we can live in harmony with the planet. Finding a green architect with whom you can work and who shares your vision can be seen to be akin to finding gold. VISIT: www.aecb.net . www.architecture.com

In a single hour the Sun transmits more energy to the Earth's surface than the world uses in a year. Installing solar PV with Sunlight Future allows your business to harness this power, producing clean, renewable energy and instant savings on your bills.
rising energy prices driving up overheads, generating your own and having an extra revenue source will give you a competitive edge in coming years.
Sunlight Future are a Bristol-based renewable energy company, specialising in solar PV design and installation. They also design and install energy efficient lighting systems and electric vehicle charge points. Because they know that renewable energy is the future of energy, they believe in providing the highest quality service to our customers. They will go the extra mile to help you meet energy efficiency needs and reduce your carbon footprint.
Install throughout August & September for guaranteed returns of up to 15% The feed-in tariff system pays for all low carbon energy produced, with typical returns of up to 15% a year. Installing now means this great incentive is offered tax-free, index-linked and guaranteed for 20 years – an unmissable investment opportunity for organisations of any size. With
Installing solar PV makes your company less reliant on energy suppliers and help protect against price increases. Using a 10kW array (approx 66m2), your business could reduce carbon emissions by 8,350 tonnes per year and make savings of over £67,000 over 20 years. For a smaller businesses using a 4kW array, carbon emissions could be reduced by 3,400 tonnes. From an initial investment of just £6,499 you could expect to generate a profit of £22,000 over 20 years.
Electric vehicles and charge points Sunlight Future have recently introduced an electric Renault Kangoo van into their fleet. These government-subsided vehicles incur no road tax or congestion charge and offer substantially lower running costs than diesel equivalents. By installing PV-powered fast chargers at their offices (in the Create Centre, Bristol's flagship eco business hub) Sunlight Future are demonstrating both the maturity of the technology as well as the simplicity of making the leap to electric vehicles.
Energy efficient lighting Sunlight Future install low-energy lighting systems incorporating the latest generation of low energy LED bulbs, which last 6 times longer and are twice as efficient as standard energy saving bulbs. They require no maintenance for over 23 years. For large scale businesses the estimated savings on running costs from these systems comes to over £11,000 p/a.
Financing advice Sunlight Future are happy to advise our customers on financing options. Thanks to the low lending rates, Carbon Trust’s Energy Efficiency Scheme and the Government’s incoming Green Deal you can choose to invest in renewable energy with very little financial outlay. These schemes also protect your business by guaranteeing that the money you save on your energy costs is always greater than the cost of your repayments.

architecture for the environment Orme Ltd is an award-winning architectural practice that specialises in sustainable and innovative design solutions and planning consultancy services for a wide range of domestic and commercial clients across the South West region. From environmentally conscious and cutting-edge design to the latest innovations in sustainable construction and technology, Orme pushes the boundaries of both contemporary and traditional architecture without compromising on aesthetic quality.
called for a visually and environmentally low impact single storey sustainable structure which would blend effortlessly with its surrounds by using natural sourced ham stone, larch timber cladding and a living sedum green roof. Permission was positively supported by the local community and the planning case officer. “Mill Green” has very high levels of insulation, utilises high performance windows, it’s airtight, uses mechanical ventilation and has no thermal bridges (continuous insulation). Internal spaces have been designed to maximise the effect of sunlight for the solar heating. Other renewable technologies incorporated include solar thermal panels, photovoltaic panel, a wood pellet bio-mass boiler and a rainwater harvester system. Chivers & Co Ltd (formally Gillam & Chivers Ltd) was the main contractor to construct. The external fabric consists of a hybrid system of timber frame and Hemcrete. The high insulation properties of Hemcrete mean that a single wall structure is sufficient to provide excellent insulation. Hemcrete is a biocomposite building material made from hemp shiv (the woody core of industrial hemp) and a lime based binder. Back to Earth, based in Devon, provided sustainable expertise consultation and supplied the Hemcrete products.
Established in 1995, this specialist practice is now led by Directors Tom Gascoyne and Edd Medlicott, providing expertise in environmentally conscious design and building techniques including passive solar design; the use of low carbon, sustainable materials; alternative energy systems utilising biomass, solar, wind or geothermal sources; super insulated timber frame or high density thermal mass construction; and recycled water systems. Orme creates exceptional bespoke architecture to meet its clients’ aspirations with minimal environmental impact.
Mill Green has recently been nominated for the South West LABC regional winner for a sustainable design. It has also been entered to the Grand Designs Awards.

A Welsh company, known for its work on preserving structures of historic importance, is facing one of its greatest challenges to date, having been awarded the £1.8 million contract to save the pyramid of Djoser.
The Step Pyramid project is of particular importance to us as the entire structure could be destroyed at any point due to the damage on the ceiling and roof caused by the earthquake. We aim to work as efficiently as possible on this project without comprising the design or strength of the structure.' Cintec’s expertise in working with other pharaonic monuments led to the call from the High Council of Egyptian Antiquities to rescue the pyramid which was built at around 2650BC as a burial place for Pharaoh Djoser. Also known as the Step Pyramid the structure is at Saqqara, around 19 miles south of Cairo.
Cintec International, based in Newport, South Wales, is a globally recognized leader in engineering research and development, bringing thoughtful innovative solutions to a diverse range of engineering challenges. By merging creative thinking with solid engineering principles, Cintec International has solved thousands of client problems all over the world. Issues as diverse as working on Windsor Castle, after the fire in 1992, to the stabilization of the Wilson Carbide Mill (1899/1900) in Canada, in 2010, through to the strengthening of a bridge in Delhi for the Indian government; the use of Cintec anchors to stabilize the capstones for the new spires on St Alphonsus’s church in Baltimore to the securing of the large tree trunks that make up the unique entrance arch for a regional wild life park, have all been solved by Cintec’s unique approach. Peter James, managing director of Cintec, said: 'We are extremely pleased to have been appointed to the Djoser project and are always looking for new methods to support and maintain historical landmarks across the globe. We recognize the importance of both historical and religious structures to their cultures and hope to continue to develop advanced reinforcement systems that will preserve archaeological structures for future generations.
The pyramid, which stands 60 metres above the plateau, is the oldest in Egypt. It was originally faced with limestone, but between the effect of wind erosion, several earthquakes over the centuries, and the tunnelling of grave robbers has suffered considerable damage. Finally an earthquake in 1992 brought the structure to the brink of collapse, and led to closure, due to the danger of substantial rock falls in the central chamber. The engineers will use self-inflating air-filled bags topped with thin blocks of high density semi rigid foam blocks to bolster against further collapse of the damaged ceiling inside the central burial chamber.
5234 2pgs:HorseWorld 13/08/2012 11:27 Page 2
Stainless steel structural reinforcement anchors will also be implemented in a bid to secure the strength of the building's central chamber. This is a landmark project for any company and Cintec are very proud to be involved.

Assessment Scheme,) accredited is very helpful when tendering for commercial work. Thousands of suppliers apply for work with public and private sector organisations, but to win work, they must meet a buyer’s health and safety standards, which vary between clients, but CHAS is a widely recognised and accepted standard. Prestige Flooring is so well regarded that John Lewis in both Cardiff and Bristol have been calling on them for 15 years to fit all their luxury vinyl tiles such as Amtico or Karndean.
FLOORING Four years ago two experienced flooring fitters, Andy German and Martin Pearce, with over 60 years experience between them, opened their own business, Prestige Flooring Bristol. Since then the business has established an excellent reputation for quality and service, both on the domestic and commercial sides of the business. They have a substantial portfolio of commercial clients including Airbus, Colston’s School, PE Generators and Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust.
With the commercial side of the business so well established, Darrell Jones joined the company, having worked for John Lewis for 25 years as an estimator, to further develop the domestic side of the business. Despite having been with the company less than a year, Darrell is very satisfied by the progress this side of the business is making. Prestige Flooring understands how difficult it can be to make the right choice of flooring to compliment your room, with such a wide and confusing range of surfaces. At their newly refurbished showroom at Cooper Rd, Thornbury, in Bristol, the experienced team will help. They are happy to offer advice, to make suggestions within your budget and explain the wearability of the different surfaces and their suitability for the location you have in mind. Prestige are complete professionals when it comes to flooring and are passionate about providing a first class service to their customers, from the initial measure right through to completion.

Of course, the skilled woodworkers can create much more than doors - more than 30,000 a year at the last count - in the Whitehall Trading Estate workshops. Crest Timber Products supplies full kitchens, doors and carcasses, just carcasses or just doors, plus a full range of accessories and trims such as cornices, pelmets, plinths, end panels, wine racks, plate racks and open display units.
TP
CRAFTING doors out of solid wood has created a solid foundation for 30 years of business success for Bristol’s Crest Timber Products Ltd.
“All our doors are made to order, stresses Dave. “They can be manufactured to the customer’s specification in any of the timbers we use: oak, maple, ash, beech, cherry walnut and pine. “All you need to do is ask and you can be sure we'll do our best to accommodate your requirements “We can also paint or stain any style of door any colour; all we need is a sample to match and it is then professionally finished in our spray shop.
Its made-to-order kitchen and bedroom cabinet doors have been sought after by discerning city homeowners through the decades and, with the recent introduction of curved doors, that demand shows no sign of diminishing.
The introduction of the curved range is just the continuation of another curve - the upward one experienced by Crest Timber ever since it was founded in a converted chicken shed, no less, by woodworkers Chris Willerton, Eddie Hope and Steve Gill “This new range matches our existing styles and is proving to be very popular, says company boss Dave Hope.
Such was the quality of work and service that word quickly spread and business from both public and trade steadily climbed through word-of-mouth recommendations.
10169 2pg:Carford Group 13/08/2012 14:02 Page 2
In January 2008 the levels of demand were such that new premises were needed and the business moved from Siston Common to its current site. “The move enabled us to keep up with demand and also allowed us to create a showroom containing most styles of doors that we have available,” says Dave. With the three founding directors having taken a step back from the company, it’s now in the capable hands of long-serving employees Gary Williamson, Darren Haycock and Eddie’s son Dave, who smiles: “The business is still ticking along nicely.

Leather and soft cover upholstery, dining, beds and mattresses, bedroom, occasional, pictures, carpets, cushion flooring, wood flooring, laminate flooring, rugs and lamps - it’s a one-stopshop Aladdin’s cave of home interiors. IN the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan is a building that, for decades, has housed the best of Britain. As a World War II air hanger, the mighty Spitfires were serviced under its cavernous roof - and for the last 40 years it has been flying high as market-leading The Place for Homes Furniture. “This is the only furniture store of its kind in the whole of the UK,” smiles managing director Graham Nelson. “Externally the hangar and old guard stations have kept their wartime appearance, however, the inside has been extensively refurbished to provide a comfortable shopping experience.”
Along with a unique shopping experience for every customer comes top-class service, backed by a dedicated after-sales department to ensure any concerns are addressed immediately and resolved as swiftly as possible with minimum inconvenience. While it’s outward appearance may reflect its Second World War roots, The Place for Homes is very much a 21st century business, not just in the way its bright and comfortable showroom leads you through traditional and contemporary ranges in Unit 1 Retail Area, Sutton Rd Llandow, just 20 minutes’ drive from Cardiff, but also with its new website on www.theplaceforhomesltd.co.uk. It’s also been chocks away with efforts to get the store on the road by having a presence at various local shows and, particularly, the Eisteddfod which this year is being held on the industrial estate at Llandow, a stone’s throw from the store. And there’s also been the arrival of two people on board in a move which has brought Graham particular pride. “I’m delighted that my daughter and son are now very much involved; both are now company directors,” he explains.
Visitors to this thriving family business can find more than 50,000 sq. feet filled with every kind of furniture and carpets, including leading brand names, - a variety of ranges to suit every home, lifestyle and budget.
“Rhian a qualified chartered accountant joined from Deloitte and handles the finance function and development of our online offers, while Rhys focuses on the selling and merchandising of the store and sourcing product.”

KARRIS Ltd doesn’t just fit-out out a workplace; it transforms a business place into a space with real ‘wow factor’.
“We exist to improve business and workplace environments by consulting with our clients to fully understand their aspirations, to offer knowledge and advice to create real solutions and benefits, design and specify the proposal and complete the project with the least possible disruption” says Vince. “We always endeavour to exceed our clients’ expectations and, because we understand fit out from their point of view, are focused on providing a positive experience and complete satisfaction with the finished project.”

Its head-turning work has gained such prestigious status that the company is preparing to expand its team and its own premises in order to keep up with demand for its expert services. Having experienced rapid growth and tripled its turnover into seven figures since 2009, the name Karris, therefore, couldn’t be more apt. The business, based at Ivybridge, in Devon, was established in 2003 by MD Perri De Wan as a construction company providing complete commercial interior refurbishment services and grew steadily by recommendation and word of mouth, working in several of Plymouth’s key buildings. In mid 2009 Perri formed a partnership with friend and former colleague Vince Brooks, with Vince responsible for Sales and Marketing, and by adopting a strategy for growth has seen business boom. Prestigious projects and events have included: Photograph Courtesy of Peter Curno - Architects Design Group
Explains partner Vince Brooks: “Our name comes from the ‘karri’ tree, the tallest tree in Australasia, which lays down strong roots before enjoying rapid and sustained growth.” Karris is a commercial interior fit-out company that designs, manages and supplies everything required for a total fit-out, including workplace appraisal, space planning and furniture supply.

Now about to take on additional staff to strengthen resources and acquiring additional warehousing while looking for new premises long-term, the company has its sights firmly fixed on its next exciting phase. Says Vince: “We plan to continue to build on our success, growing the business and establishing Karris as the region’s leading Interiors Company. “We add value by designing and project managing the entire process in-house with our team of consultants, designers, specifiers, project managers, and other trusted partners.

WOLLENS
Both members of the public and the professionals receive the same warm welcome from Wollen’s friendly team - all customers are special insists Nick - many of whom have been with the business for more than ten years and some more than two decades. “With this sort of experience and expertise we can offer a service of excellence - from the biggest builder to the smallest retail customer,” says Nick.
WHETHER it’s a small DIY project or a major commercial development, Wollens Builders Merchants is a one-stop shop for all construction needs. Proud to call itself mid Somerset’s premier builders’ merchant and DIY store, the family business, based on Wirral Park, Glastonbury, has been the supplier of choice to many for decades. Ever since newly demobbed David Edmonds, whose former job at a builders’ merchants no longer existed after the war, responded to an advert for a partner to take over a new yard, the company’s story has been one of continued success and expansion.
“We pride ourselves in carrying a very large stock range. For example, Wollens aims to have the largest practical stock levels for common bricks and blocks, with typically up to 100,000 on site at any one time. “Combined with our fleet of crane offload vehicles, which can service any site in the Somerset and Bristol area, we ensure that you get the materials you need in the fastest possible time and we can supply any quantity, from just a few bricks to complete housing developments.” Of course, it’s more than just bricks to be found at Wollens. Doors and windows, tools and power tools, builders’ chemicals, guttering and drainage, electrical goods, insulation, lintels, dry lining and plastering, garden landscaping and a whole host of other sector related products are available. “Our ability to remain competitive in the industry is maintained by our membership of large merchant buying groups,” adds Nick.
“We are always expanding,” confirms David’s grandson Nick, who with his brother Simon is at the helm of the business today. The family has kept the name the original site Wollen’s Yard - had when they first took it over and, over the years, as its reputation grew so did the acreage and the number of stores. The need for more space prompted the move to the current site in 1991, which was then 1.5 acres in size. In 2012, the company now covers more than 2.5acres and with further stores and an expanded showroom and office. Now it’s a builder’s and timber merchant, it has an extensive kitchen and bathroom showroom, a plumbing and heating department and offers a free plan take-off service to all account holders. “We will accept plans for all new builds or major extensions and provide a full breakdown of your material requirements,” explains Nick.
“We are therefore confident that we can supply competitively and efficiently and, with our experience and knowledgeable staff we can offer builders and retail customers of all sizes a complete supply package.” The yard is open Monday-Friday from 7am-5pm and on Saturdays from 7.30am until noon.

Shell Oil is producing chemicals for polyurethanes to make rigid foam, for lighter-weight car parts, resulting in lighter weight more fuel efficient cars. New fuels include Hydrogen, Methane Gas, Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), Electricity, Bio Fuels (Ethanol) using straw, sawdust, Rape Seed, Sugar Cane, and even coffee. Green Lubricants can be made from used oil, by removing impurities to restore its original qualities. Some green oils are made from plants and natural ingredients, while at the other end of the green scale, recycled plastic is being used. There is a huge range of bolt – ons to help reduce emissions, such as catalytic converters, and recent developments in GPS technology have resulted in a range of products to help monitor driver behaviour and reduce fuel costs. Light Foot, developed by Ashwoods, is a driver assistance scheme which works by means of verbal warnings and an integrated LED display to self-correct inefficient drivers One government incentive, The Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Support Scheme is making £3.6m available to Community Planning Partnerships to provide financial support for the procurement or lease of low carbon vehicles, and for the installation of publicly accessible charging/fuelling infrastructure. Green Transport Plans managing the transport needs of staff and visitors reduce the environmental impact of travel associated with work, encouraging employees to use cars and plane travel more wisely, and provide incentives to use alternative modes of transport such as the Cycle to Work Scheme.
The number of cars on the road is expected to triple by 2050. Although the Governmment have instituted a number of tax incentives to encourage the purchase of more fuel efficient vehicles, surprisingly few tax rules seem designed specifically to foster environmental responsibility. Companies are looking at increasingly innovative ways to move people and goods efficiently, investing in lower emission vehicles, developing more energy-efficient fuels and lubricants, offering drivers fuel-saving tips, and working in technical partnerships. For fleet managers the financial case for purchasing or leasing less thirsty cars is pretty compelling, as, over time, fuel and tax charges are bound to increase. Help and advice on the purchase of low emission vehicles (LEV) including hybrid, electric, and hydrogen powered vehicles, is offered by The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership CVP which is a public-private partnership that exists to accelerate a sustainable shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels and create opportunities for UK businesses. Industry incentives include the funding of a new professor at WMG, by Jaguar Land Rover to lead key Hybrid / Battery Electric Vehicle Digital Product Innovation in support of complex component and systems innovation.
The Cycle to Work Scheme is a tax incentive whereby an employer is allowed to loan bikes and safety equipment to its employees without any tax charge arising. It seems that business and manufacturing is recognising the advantages of “going green”, both for their order books and their bottom line. VISIT: www.lowcvp.org.uk . www.cyclescheme.co.uk

TOYOTA PRIMES PRIUS+ FOR SUMMER LAUNCH Toyota continues the expansion its hybrid technology into new areas of the market with the launch this summer of Prius+, Europe’s first full hybrid seven-seat MPV. The ground-breaking new model, which combines traditional people carrier practicality with ultra-efficient performance, is also the first mainstream Toyota hybrid to use a lighter and more compact lithium-ion battery pack.
Thanks to the exceptional efficiency of its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, its light weight and wind-cheating aerodynamics, Prius+ in T4 trim produces 96g/km, making it the only seven-seat model on the UK market to come in below the 100g/km CO2 threshold for zero road tax and London congestion charge exemption; output from the T Spirit is 101g/km. Fuel economy adds to Prius+ attractive total ownership cost: official figures are 68.9mpg for the T4 and 64.2mpg for the T Spirit.

Installing the slim lithium-ion battery neatly within the centre console avoids any intrusion on the space available for rear seat passengers and for load carrying. Five separate folding rear seats are provided and with all of these in place there is 200 litres of luggage space; with the third row stowed, this figure rises to 505 litres

Safe summer driving with a Holiday Check Is your car ready for your summer holiday? With the economic climate still under a cloud, 55% of holidaymakers this year will be cutting costs by holidaying at home. However, very few motorists have considered the effect a breakdown could have on their staycation. According to research by the Good Garage Scheme, 58% of British holidaymakers will not have their cars checked before heading out on the road this summer, which means thousands of motorists could be putting their lives at risk by travelling in cars that are unfit and dangerous. To help avoid a costly breakdown during a summer getaway, there are a number of checks you can make to ensure you don’t miss out on a great holiday because your car has let you down. Do you have your car checked at a garage before any motoring holidays?
So what do I do? You can find your nearest Good Garage Scheme member at www.goodgaragescheme.com just by typing in your postcode. A selfregulatory body for independent workshops and MOT centres, the Good Garage Scheme ensures its members maintain the best industry standards. It has several thousand members that adhere to a strict Code of Conduct and offer an Industry Standard Service. Download our award-winning app The Good Garage Scheme app is an ideal travelling companion to have when driving on holiday. Voted App of the Week recently by AutoExpress and cited as one of the best motoring apps of the year by The Sunday Times, it allows you to pinpoint your local Good Garage Scheme member on the move, from anywhere in the UK. It’s like having a friend in the know! • Further information about downloading the app can be found by visiting www.goodgaragescheme.com About the Good Garage Scheme:

• Adhere to a strict Code of Conduct and pledge to have their customers’ best interests at heart • Must agree what work needs doing with their customers before it is carried out • Work to an Industry Standard Service checklist • Must supply each customer with a feedback card allowing them to give their views on service directly to the Good Garage Scheme, which operates a stringent complaints procedure • Are subject to mystery shoppers and regular audits

• Brakes – listen for excessive noise from brakes and have the discs and pads checked for excessive wear. Motorists can get used to driving with worn brakes without realising the danger. It’s essential to check them regularly.

• Air conditioning – check for a bad smell such as a dirty sock smell that may indicate harmful mould and bacteria in the air conditioning ducts which can cause flu-like symptoms. Still unsure about what to do? Proper preparation will give you the peace of mind that your car is in the best possible condition before you head off on your ‘staycation’. South Cerney Engineering Ltd. At one time the UK was the world leader in engineering and invention, but we are losing many of the traditional skills with the growth of electronic technology and today’s throwaway culture.
the capacity to manufacture many of those items. A typical sample of the engines worked on includes: Ferrari 166, Alfa Romeo 8C, Alfa Romeo 6C's, Amilcars, BMW V8's, BMW 2.0 litres, Bristol, Derby Bentley and Rolls Royce through to stationary engines. In short, if it is a machine, and it isn’t working, no matter how old or new, they have the skills and facilities to fix it, and are prepared to teach others how to do the same.
A company based at Ashton Keynes near Swindon is striving to keep the tradition of engineering innovation alive by offering training and apprenticeships. South Cerney Engineering is well known for their engineering expertise among owners of veteran, vintage, classic and historical automobiles, but whatever type of machine you have that needs attention, even if it has stopped working altogether, take it along.

PROUD TO SUPPORT South Cerney Engineering
Their engineers take pride in preserving any sort of machinery, from the earliest up to the most modern. Their highly adaptable team are able by an intuitive understanding of how machines work, combined with the application of basic engineering principles, to come up with solutions to even the most obscure mechanical problems. The company boasts a wealth of knowledge among the team, of over 250 years, which as their engineers come up to retirement, is in danger of being lost, unless new people come in to the industry. Some of the more unusual projects the company has undertaken include repairs to old printing presses, re-machining AGA hotplates and repairs to Victorian radiators. Design and development work for inventors is also part of the portfolio. For restoration projects they have done all the specialist machining on a Merlin engine which has now been refitted into a Spitfire. They also have repaired a Ford engine for the Military which had to be specially flown out to The Ascension Islands during the Falklands crisis. They are frequently called upon to repair agricultural or forestry machinery that was originally perfectly well made, just out of date with parts no longer available; also steam traction engines, hang gliders, recycling centre machinery, jet skis, and anything to do with motor cars and motorbikes. Their extensive machine shop has facilities for cylinder block reboring and reboring cylinders for new over-sized pistons, crankshaft regrinding, and cylinder head machining including fitting hardened valve seat inserts. For the older engines they can manufacture and white-metal new main and conrod bearings, including general machining for one off manufacture. They also carry out cold metal repair by stitching, thereby retaining the original parts, but also have

Local, well established, Land Rover Specialists, Landrover4U have settled into their new premises at Taunton Cross on the A35 between Axminster and Honiton. The move last November was exciting, and finding the right premises was a major challenge as they had been at their previous base in Honiton for 15 years. However, as Director, Nick Austin, explained: “We needed more workshop and showroom space, especially since expanding the business to include the Polaris range of all terrain vehicles. The site gives us great opportunities for expansion”.
The friendly team are all highly skilled and will have you back on the road as soon as possible whether you have come in for routine maintenance, MOT, to have an accessory fitted, welding or a major engine or unit rebuild. As an extra service there are courtesy cars available while your vehicle is in the workshop, and a local collection and delivery services can usually be arranged. When you visit Landrover4U, you will receive a warm welcome and a straightforward no nonsense quote that will pleasantly surprise you. Being independent, Nick and Kevin are proud that Landrover4U is able to offer savings, on average, of 50%, as compared with main dealer pricings, and they fully guarantee all their work. In 2008 they became main agents for Polaris ATV (all terrain vehicles), and are able to offer the same services for these increasingly popular, safer and more versatile alternative to quad bikes. Nick says; “At Landrover4U we believe that there is a strong demand from our local customers for a reliable and honest service. We will undertake anything from a headlamp bulb change to a major overhaul and we maintain a high standard of professionalism and courtesy at all times.

TAUNTON CARAVAN SERVICES LTD CARAVANNERS care about their caravans - so when their beloved campers are in need of some TLC they take them to the place that cares about them as much as they do. Taunton Caravan Services Ltd may be small but it’s a family enterprise with a big heart for life on the open road.
Its extensive list of services includes the fit, service and repair of motor movers, Powrtouch, Alko Mammut and Truma movers, servicing and fitting of the Alko ATC Anti-Snake System, supplying and refilling Truma light gas bottles and acting as agent for Alko, Truma, Dometic, Thetford, Whale and Fiamma.
Acquired as an eight year-old business 22 years ago by John and Nita Middleton, it’s run by people for whom caravans are not just a business, they’re a way of life.
Not only does everyone in the company know the business inside and out, understand where customers are coming from and how caravans and motorhomes ‘work’ - they’re expert craftsmen too, taking pride in a job well done.
Although John still lends a hand at busy times and to cover holiday absences, the couple spend much of their time travelling in their motorhome, which replaced their caravan upon their retirement.
“It’s difficult to get a wallboard into some of the caravan’s angles,” acknowledges Debbie. “But Bev, who specialises in damp work repairs, is always chuffed when he’s finished a piece of cutting and you can’t tell where it’s been done.”
That was when daughter Debbie Cox took over her mum’s admin role, joining husband John who is workshop manager. For them the perfect holiday is with their five-year-old daughter, already a firm caravanning fan, in their ’94 Swift Corniche.
Neither are John or Andy reluctant to share their extensive knowledge with customers, many of whom come to the workshop in Gravelands Lane, Henlade, following a recommendation.
Also in the workshop is Andy Sheppard and Bev Seldon, the latter part of an extended family of keen caravanners and who is the proud owner of an Elddis himself.
“We always take the time to listen to our customers,” assures Debbie. “They have told us that they’ve been to places where they weren’t allowed to talk to the engineer or just told how things would be done and that was it. “But if someone’s got a question, John and Andy will go through the whole process and explain everything. “A lot of people, including those who are new to caravanning, don’t realise how things work. “We will help anyone who turn up on our doorstep with a problem and try and fix it there and then for them if possible.”
(L-R) Andy Sheppard, Bev Seldon, John Cox

City West Commercials Mercedes-Benz dealer City West goes for growth City West Commercials, the official Mercedes-Benz dealer for the South-West, has embarked on a major recruitment drive at it gears up to meet customer demand for exciting new truck and van products. The company has already appointed highly-rated industry professional Richard Prosser, who worked previously for the manufacturer, to lead its truck sales operation. And while some of the remaining posts it is now seeking to fill also require relevant experience, for other roles a motivated attitude and people skills are the key attributes required.
City West Commercials won the Mercedes-Benz franchise for the West Country in 2009 – it has headquarters in Avonmouth and a network of dealerships in Bristol, Exeter and Roche, as well as a recently-opened after sales facility at Somerton, near Yeovil.
Dealer Principal Graeson Clarke explained: “There are fantastic opportunities within our sales and administration teams, as well as for apprentice technicians and parts specialists, for which job-specific training will be provided. The candidates we appoint to fill those roles will be those with the personalities that will allow them to represent our business to customers and work closely with colleagues. “City West Commercials has an all-inclusive culture so we’re looking for enthusiastic team players who share our aspirations and want to be part of an exciting, developing business. In these challenging times of relatively high unemployment we’re offering more than just a job – we’re also offering the prospect of a rewarding career with the world’s leading commercial vehicle brand.”
Driving success… (L-R) Graeson Clarke and Richard Prosser The company is responsible for sales and support of the award-winning Mercedes-Benz truck and van ranges, and popular Fuso Canter light trucks. Having just launched the acclaimed, premium long-haul Mercedes-Benz Actros – International Truck of the Year for 2012 – and an all-new Canter range, it is now looking ahead to the introduction early next year of the Mercedes-Benz Citan, the first city van to wear a three-pointed star. Mr Clarke continued: “We’ve concentrated over the last couple of years on delivering the quality of service that customers of Mercedes-Benz are entitled to expect, and on ensuring that we have

“We’ll never stop striving to improve service levels, and we continue to review our representation – as well as planning a new facility in Exeter, we’re also considering other locations. But with the new products now coming through, this is the right time to go for growth, which is why we’ve launched our recruitment drive.” On the sales front, City West Commercials is seeking a van sales director and a number of trainee van sales executives, as well as a truck sales executive to cover Devon and Cornwall. In after sales there are opportunities at all City West locations for experienced technicians, as well as for service and parts apprentices – the dealer is committed to a policy of “growing its own”. Administrative vacancies, meanwhile, include those for human resources and marketing managers.

freemantechnology Supporting manufacturing industry’s continuing drive for efficient powder processing
Experience and expertise
Organisations around the world who process powdered materials turn to Tewkesbury-based Freeman Technology for the equipment and know-how that helps them design, manage and improve their manufacturing efficiency. One measure of Freeman Technology’s success in world markets is a doubling of the company’s export sales in the past three years, an achievement that has been recognised with this year’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of International Trade.
“Our first Queen’s Award in 2007 celebrated the development of the FT4 and its contribution to supporting manufacturing industry,” continued Tim Freeman. “Five years on, not only do we have a proven instrument, we have unparalleled experience, expertise and applications knowledge that supports the use of the system. It is this combination that is proving so powerful and is driving our international growth.”
World player, local employer In September 2011, Freeman Technology relocated to large, modern premises in Tewkesbury having outgrown its original site in Welland, Worcestershire. Managing Director Tim Freeman is proud not only of the company’s success in world markets, but also of the company’s role as an employer in the region and the part it plays in the local economy. “We need a wide variety of skills within our organisation and are always keen to recruit and develop talented individuals,” he said. “All manufacturing and commercial operations, as well as our central support services, are housed at our Tewkesbury headquarters. Consequently we have on site engineers, researchers, manufacturing personnel and application scientists, together with sales and support teams and all the administration services necessary for the smooth running of an international business.”
Powders are part of many manufacturing processes
Since the launch of the FT4 eight years ago, Freeman Technology has supported sales directly in Europe and the US, and through distribution partners in Japan. This past year has seen the opening of a new direct operation in North America and the extension of distribution partnerships to include China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Tim Freeman sees “exciting times ahead as we continue to open up new markets”.

freemantechnology 1 Miller Court, Severn Drive Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire The FT4 Powder Rheometer helps manufacturers solve powder processing problems
Why powders are important Powders are part of more manufacturing processes than most people imagine, from medicines, cosmetics and foodstuffs through to paints, printing inks, coatings, abrasives and building materials. Freeman Technology manufactures and markets instruments that measure how powders flow – or don’t flow! – under different conditions. The company’s FT4 Powder Rheometer helps manufacturers understand why powders behave the way they do, guiding efforts to design more efficient and streamlined manufacturing processes that work with a powder rather than against it.

SOUTH WALES SUPERBIKES Premier Yamaha Dealer
SUPER bikes from South Wales Superbikes - here’s a dealer that lives up to its name. It’s also supersized, providing 13,000sq ft of biker heaven otherwise known as the largest motorcycle showroom in Wales. More than 200 machines, new and used but all shiny and revving to go, fill the ground floor on the Queensway Meadows Industrial Estate, in Newport, while upstairs is the substantial accessories and parts department. Factor in the fully-equipped workshop and plans for an MOT testing station later this year and it’s obvious that South Wales Superbikes is going to be an even bigger presence on the motorbike scene. Launched in the 1970s, the business has been under its current ownership since 2002. Offering new and used motorcycles, finance, servicing, parts, clothing accessories, it is proud to hold exclusive premier Yamaha dealer status and the title of Best Dealer in Wales conferred by a national motorbike magazine. “We have a high client retention rate due to our excellent customer service with which we aim to achieve 100% satisfaction, proffers managing director Brian Jones. “South Wales Superbikes staff are professional, friendly and knowledgeable, with years of experience and whose aim is to always offer a first-class service. Customers calling in to the extensive showroom are never short of options, able to view a full range of Yamahas and a vast range of quality used bikes.
Being a premier dealer, all the company’s technicians are fully trained to be familiar with Yamaha machines but their experience of - and love of - motorbikes of all makes and models means whether clients are buying or bringing in their own machine for servicing, repairs or a check-up, they know it will be in expert hands. “When you buy a used bike, you can be certain we will deliver on price and service, promises Brian. “All used bikes go through a comprehensive and approved checklist, including investigations for outstanding finance, previous accident damage, theft or total loss.

“Our service technicians also check every bit of your the motorcycle; from the tyres and fluid levels to the handlebars and lights. If any problems are found, they are fixed before they reach the showroom - and we can deliver it direct to your door.” The workshop, filled with all the very latest technology and expertise, is where the rigorous testing takes place, along with all the regular servicing and repairs. “Our technicians will treat your bike as if it were their own,” assures Brian. “Not only are they experts, they are customer orientated as we believe that having a high level of customer service and satisfaction, as well as having the best people and the best tools for the job, are key to the success of the technical area of the business. “We also have strong relationships with all our suppliers and can source the best parts for your machine and fit them in the appropriate manner, giving you the best results on the road.”

Massey Wilcox celebrates its 60th year in 2014. Based at Chilcompton, Nr Bath they have extensive warehousing facilities there, and at Avonmouth, bringing their total warehousing capacity to over 350,000 square feet. The Depot at Avonmouth has unique access to main line rail, enabling customers to choose between inbound and outbound freight by rail as well as road. A key factor in the company’s success is its 14 year association with Pall-Ex, the overnight pallet operation. Apart from standard, next day and economy services throughout the UK, the company through their membership, can offer daily departures to mainland Europe for smaller consignments in addition to full loads and larger groupage services, in fact, arranging transport of goods to anywhere in the world. Massey Wilcox has a rolling programme of investment in facilities and their fleet. Their ability to adapt to market conditions gives them the opportunity to integrate new possibilities into their offering, providing that they don’t compromise the high level of service they offer to their existing customer base.
Massey Wilcox has a fleet of over 160 modern, fuel efficient vehicles and trailers, and has recently introduced a new livery to be applied to each new addition to the fleet. They have a suitable vehicle for all requirements, including curtain sided and specialised trailers, all the rigid units and some trailers carry full sized tail lifts. Their modern workshop facilities have, for the past 14 years, been operated by the local Mercedes Benz Main Dealer, giving all vehicles a full repair and maintenance contract with Mercedes ensuring total compliance and minimal downtime. All vehicles naturally have cab phones along with total telematics, which not only include tracking but constant reporting of the vehicle’s mechanical health and the style in which it is being driven. Massey Wilcox provides driver CPC training for its drivers ensuring that they remain compliant with the DSA, this service being offered to third parties where required. Drivers are trained in handling ADR consignments, (ADR training includes the analysis, handling and classification of a broad range of dangerous consignments.) In short, there is not a consignment they cannot handle, from 1 pallet to a full load, up to 28 tonnes.
