In this edition we introduce our new regular columnist, Bev James, CEO of the Coaching Academy, emphasise the importance of thorough research, and cover the FMB Awards. We also celebrate the more eclectic side of motoring in a feature about Retro and Vintage vehicles. In our next edition Bev James will continue her inspirational series of articles while Lord Saatchi of Saatchi and Saatchi will talk about the rise of mobile advertising. We will discuss the benefits to businesses of “thinking green”, the improvement in the property market, and carry an article on “Fleet Management” for the Road Haulage industry.

Hilton Herbs manufactures a large range of herbal feed supplements, shampoos, creams, and lotions for horses and companion animals In 2013 Hilton Herbs celebrated its 23rd year in business and owners and Directors, Hilary & Tony Self are pleased to say they are still as passionate about what they do as when they first started making herbal supplements for animals in the stable yard of their Victorian farmhouse in Surrey back in 1990!
The offices are located in a converted Victorian red brick cow shed just a hop and a skip from the small village of North Perrott – in fact visitors to Hilton Herbs often find it hard to believe that such a thriving business is hidden away at the end of a country lane!
As is often the case a germ of an idea became a business certainty and in 1993 the business out-grew the Surrey premises and was relocated to Downclose Farm, North Perrott, in rural Somerset. Since then a purpose-built manufacturing facility has been constructed where all Hilton Herbs’ herbal products are manufactured, under an EU accreditation scheme, to ensure safety and traceability of all product ingredients. Look out for Hilton Herbs’ new website and packaging which have both recently undergone a mini-makeover, to update the product information and co-ordinate new products within the existing ranges.

The company has continued to expand keeping sales buoyant despite ever increasing competition in the supplements industry. Hilary and Tony attribute their success to their extremely dedicated team, some of whom have been with the company for over ten years. Their passion for the business has enabled a small company to successfully punch above its weight in an extremely competitive industry.
In news for 2013 Allie Tayler joined Hilton Herbs from Clipper Teas with the remit of developing retail business in the UK; she has recently been joined by Stephanie Longin who is responsible for managing Helpline/Mail Order for France as well as retail business development in the same market. Projects for 2013/2014 include a possible building expansion, substantial investment in their already well-established German market, and some exciting new products – watch this space!

Clevedon company Espiner Medical Limited are delighted to have won the Queens award for “Enterprise International Trade 2013.” The award is given to a business that has achieved substantial growth in overseas earnings and in commercial success for their business size and sector.
As part of their planned expansion the company is currently targeting some highly regulated new markets such as Brazil, China and Japan. As well as locating, training and developing a distributor network, EML also works directly with surgeons and other medical professionals to identify new product requirements.
A company needs to show outstanding achievement in international trade over three years or continuous achievement in international trade over six years. The award is in recognition of the company’s outstanding export achievements; a first time winner of the Award, Espiner Medical Limited has increased its overseas sales turnover by 1517% over the last six years. This is a marvellous accolade for the company who have developed an innovative tissue retrieval system for use in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
Commenting on the award, Jim Howard and Harry Espiner raised some important issues, saying: “There are 196,605 registered companies in the South West… Out of these only 2.9% are exporters. The National Target for export is 25%. As a company we have achieved a figure of nearly 60%. “The National Target increase for export is 5%. We have achieved a staggering 1517% over a 6 year period.” They concluded by paying tribute to their team, “It is a credit to our staff, distributors and partners – all who have contributed and continue to contribute to our success. Thank You! “
For more information please visit the website
Created from lightweight ripstop nylon and coated in a special formulation of polyurethane, the E-Sac product range brings specific benefits to the operating theatre that set it apart from its competitors. Pioneering laparoscopic surgeon Harry Espiner needed a solution to the problem of how to retrieve tissue safely during a new procedure for gallbladder removal. Deciding that the simplest solution was to create a bag to remove the organ, he set about designing one and identified Major Jim Howard at Cameron Balloons - the world's largest manufacturer of hot air balloons - as his partner. This unlikely seeming combination of expertise proved exceptionally successful, and Espiner Medical was established in 1994. The company has since grown to such an extent that they have recently doubled their floor space, to provide capacity for still further growth. For safe tissue retrieval, reliability and quality surgical products competitively priced, Espiner Medical is a cut above the rest. Its main export markets are Germany, Spain, Austria, Canada, Australia, the USA, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and Poland, with a number of these countries being identified as potential growth markets.

Introducing our new regular columnist
Bev James
CEO of The Coaching Academy and Director of Mentoring at Start-Up Loans
How to turn a good idea into a successful start-up People have brilliant ideas every day; that eureka moment that makes you stop and think, if I could turn this into a business, I would be very successful. But where do you go from there? Having a great idea is the easy part, progressing from that point is the challenge. Setting up a new business is like planning an adventure holiday, with finite time and resources. To get the most out of your journey you need a budget for your costs; your choice of route will match the time you have available and your choice of activity will depend upon your interests, skills and passions. If you have an idea, my advice would be to only consider developing it further if you feel passionate about it. Businesses, almost by default, go through hard times and good times so by choosing an idea that you are passionate about, you will have the drive to get through any bumps in the road. Once you have an idea that you are passionate about, analysing your skill set is the next step. I always recommend that budding entrepreneurs get experience in their industry of interest. This helps in foreseeing business issues that can arise in the future by providing a platform for the entrepreneur to gain both product knowledge and tips on running a successful business, often from the ground up.
Start-Up Loans, the government backed initiative to encourage entrepreneurship, could be a great way to secure a small loan to get your business up and running. Once you have successfully turned your idea into a business the hard work begins! You need to make sure that people know about your business and that the idea takes off. Efficient, wellplanned sales and marketing is the most important element to this and without it your business will fall flat. Therefore it is important to think through your marketing plan during the early stages starting up so that the right messages are conveyed to future customers. Whatever route you take, turning your idea into a successful start-up takes time, hard work and patience. You need to be determined to succeed and have the courage to stand your ground. It can be a daunting process but one that is incredibly satisfying and worthwhile. Bev James is a business mentor, best-selling author of DO IT! or DITCH IT and CEO of the Coaching Academy www.bevjames.com @Bev_James
At this stage I would recommend seeking advice from a business mentor with expertise knowledge. A mentor can help guide you through the initial start-up phase by using their experience, perspective and contacts. If you want to embark on a project that needs specialist expertise, a mentor is essential as you need to make sure that you are trained or supported by those who know the industry. With this in place you need to undertake competitor analysis which is vital when setting up any business. You need to ask some hard-nosed, objective questions. Is there space in the market for your business? Is there a real need for it? Can this need be fulfilled, or overcome, in a cheaper way? In today’s harsh financial climate, everybody is cautious about the way they spend their money so, market research is essential but without giving your idea away. Now that you have established that you have a great idea which the market needs, how are you going to secure funding? Business finance is increasingly hard to come by so you need to be realistic about how much funding you need and remember that every start-up nearly always requires more time and money than budgeted for so try and be flexible to accommodate these changes. I believe one of the best places to start when it comes to securing funding is your family if they have some extra money to invest. If that is not an option, there are plenty of other alternatives out there. Start-up finance options include bank funding and business bank loans, overdrafts, credit cards, private equity or private investment, angel investment and small business grants.

Following a merger in 2010 with a fellow business support agency, Bristol Spaceworks became the operator of two further sites, this time in St Phillips and Barton Hill.
128 office, workshop and artist’s studio spaces over 7 buildings on 4 sites means that, on those figures alone, Bristol Spaceworks should qualify as one of the largest providers of workspace in the South West; but what makes Bristol Spaceworks a different kind of provider is that they only operate 40,000 sq ft in total - an average of just 320 sq ft per unit.
Established in 1985 as an Enterprise Agency in one of the poorest wards in the country, East Bristol Enterprise, as it was then known, was founded to provide youth employment opportunities in East Bristol. The handful of spaces available in the original building in Easton were soon occupied, and with support from Bristol City Council, the former site of Easton Colliery was purchased, the mineshafts capped, and 17 workshops and 30 office spaces were added to the company's portfolio in 1988 . . . another 19 offices in 2000 . . . . and another 12 in 2002 . . . .
8
All the company's spaces, from the smallest artist studio to the largest office are let on a simple, easy in easy out licence which means that young companies can grow (and shrink if necessary) by making a simple move to another of Spaceworks' units just as soon as one is available. Service levels are geared to the needs of the small business, with Reception Services, heating and telephone line all included in the rent and broadband available on all sites. Meeting room hire, copying and franking services are all available on site at Easton Business Centre, at sensible prices, to match the rents.
Chief Executive Chris Chapman has been at Easton Business Centre for ten years and retires shortly. “Next to running my own business, which I did for a similar length of time in the 90’s, this has been the most rewarding period of my entire career. It is extraordinarily satisfying to be able to provide a supportive and cost-effective environment where new businesses can flourish and grow. In Mid-June 2013 the Board of Bristol Spaceworks will begin the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive; in the words of Chairman Neil Pirie “an exceptionally challenging role, but an enormous opportunity for the right candidate.”
10953 2pg_Feature Template 10/07/2013 10:05 Page 2
Occupancy rates have never been higher, so as well as finding a new CEO, Bristol Spaceworks would dearly like to acquire additional buildings to satisfy the growing demand they have for good quality, sensibly priced business accommodation to let on easy in easy out terms. If your business is just starting out, upsizing or downsizing, and needs premises between 100 and 1,500 sq ft close to the M32, please phone and arrange to visit us at Easton Business Centre or at any of our other sites: The Old Library in Trinity Road BS2, The Old Schoolhouse in Salisbury Street BS5, or The Old Co-op Business Centre in Chelsea Road BS5 – we will do our very best to find a space for you.

If there is a change in tenancy when does the landlord have to let the insurer know? Any change should be notified to us immediately, this can be as simple as a change of tenant in your rented property i.e. if a professional tenant moves out and a student moves in. If you do not let us know of the change in tenancy this may invalidate your policy.
Local property insurance experts Mark and Ashley are part of the specialist property insurance team who look after the Southwest region. They have extensive property insurance experience and offer specialist property insurance advice both on a residential and commercial basis for individual landlords, property managing agents, letting agents and mortgage intermediaries. The Southwest team can provide cover for all property related risks from an individual landlord up to a large block policy*. Who are the Towergate Insurance Southwest property team and what specialist service can they provide?
Ashley Flack Mark Collett
Towergate Insurance have an experienced, local based team who specialise in providing competitive property insurance solutions to individual landlords, landlords with property portfolios, as well as block insurance policies. We can provide cover for buildings, contents and property owner’s liability for a wide range of tenant types, including young professionals, students, asylum seekers and DSS.
What is property owner’s liability insurance and why might you put it in place? This provides you with cover if your tenant injures themselves whilst at your property and they then wish to claim against you as holding legal liability for the injury caused. The cover typically starts at £2,000,000 and provides you with peace of mind that you are fully protected if an incident were to occur. We are able to include this cover as standard as part of your buildings policy. If you are a landlord that would like to speak to a member of our specialist team about your current insurance arrangement or to save money please give us a call or send us an email with your renewal date and contact telephone number. Alternatively if you are a property managing agent, letting agent or mortgage intermediary that would like to have access to our service, please give us a call to discuss further.

Why is unoccupied property seen as more of a risk by insurers? Insurers see unoccupied property as a higher risk for a number of reasons, i.e. if a fire breaks out at the property there will be no one Mark Collett on hand to attend to the fire, which will result in greater damage to the property. There is also greater risk of theft and malicious damage at the property if it is unoccupied. What types of cover are available? People are often unaware of the different types of property insurance available to them. They can either have FLEA perils, which provides protection for the property against fire, lightening, earthquake, explosion and aircraft damage or FULL perils which provides cover for all of the above as well as collision by vehicle, storm flood or weight of snow, breakage or collapse of fixed radio and television aerials/ satellites and escape of water from frost damage to fixed water tanks apparatus or pipes.

50 years of producing perfect printing, AutoPrinters of Cardiff have kept pace with modern technology while retaining the values of a well established family run business.
The company are not just “green” in the factory, since 2010 they have used Ben Allen from Big Blue Bike, Cardiff's first bicycle cargo courier, specialising in large loads for many of their deliveries. AutoPrinters would like to take this opportunity to thank their many loyal customers who have stayed with them over the years, and to thank their many newer customers who have come to them in many cases through recommendations and referrals.
The company are very proud to have survived through the difficult economic circumstances of the last few years. They attribute their success to taking the trouble to understand their customers’ requirements. Robert Pingel, MD, says, “We have learnt over the years that what our customers want is quick turnaround, low costs and a good friendly service.” There is always someone available to talk through the specific details of your job, whether a few posters, or thousands of flyers. You can be sure of always receiving the appropriate advice and a best value quote with no compromise on quality. AutoPrinters specialises in commercial printing. The image you and your company present is important; after all, you never get the chance to make another first impression, so it is well worth while taking the experts’ advice on what will look the best. Robert emphasises the importance the company places on establishing, and maintaining, good relationships with their customers when he says, “We will always give all customers our best and personal attention on every stage of the print process, from the design stage through to delivery. Due to the difficult trading conditions of recent years, printing, especially, has needed to keep base with developments and adapt to changing market conditions. A programme of prudent investment in new machinery and processes, has kept AutoPrinters at the forefront of their customers’ requirements, reduced their carbon footprint and brought down the cost of printing, ultimately saving their customers money. Technology is constantly evolving and AutoPrinters is proud of keeping pace with all the latest software and machinery, ensuring that in whatever format the work comes to them, they are able to keep the job turn around, smoothly, promptly and fuss free.
12
Robert would like to reassure customers, both old and new that AutoPrinters will continue to offer the same high standards of printing and customer service on which their reputation is founded, if not for the next 50 years, at least for the foreseeable future.

What? Who? Where? How? Research is the way to answer these questions, reliable data, is a critical factor for start up businesses, and the continuing success of existing firms. What is your product and where is the market for that product? How to identify your likely customers, where they are, and how best to reach them? Then there is the importance of keeping abreast of market trends and the current technology. In order to establish a realistic pricing structure for your product you will have needed to take all your costs into account; including raw materials, the cost of manufacture, transportation, premises, staff availability and wages. Where do your raw materials come from? Who is producing the materials you need and will your suppliers be able to produce the quantity, and maintain the right quality at the right price? Does it make economic sense to source from the UK or from overseas? Then there is the consideration of premises - can you work from home, or would rented premises be more suitable; do you need to purchase somewhere, and just how much space do you need? In the case of an existing business, do you need to rethink your existing space, extend or move?
Advice is literally everywhere, the internet, business consultants, accountants, commercial property agents, architects, office furniture suppliers, telecoms providers, and IT consultants, mostly at a cost, but who can you rely on? Try the government’s own statistics. The 10 yearly government census was taken on 27th March 2011, and now that the numbers have been crunched a steady stream of data has started to flow from the Office for National Statistics covering everything from the number, sex and ages of the population, to our living conditions, health, occupations, whether we have more than one address, how we travel to work and our educational qualifications. But what has this got to do with your business? Well, depending on the type of commercial activity that you undertake, census statistics can tell you an awful lot about your employees and customers. And that can help you to arrive at important decisions about where to locate your business and how you can develop and target your products and services. Major business decisions invariably carry an element of risk, so anything that increases confidence and minimises risk is
to be welcomed. Census statistics can inform growth plans and provide management, board and investors with reliable evidence and the confidence to enable them to make those important decisions. The data can also help to identify where your business might benefit from more detailed market research to address specific business development issues. One great advantage of census statistics is that they are available down to very small geographical areas. So, as well as information about the population at a national level, you can also drill down to individual local authorities and even to postcodes. Another advantage is that census data is usually free of charge. Only when someone needs a specific piece of data that does not form part of the standard range of statistical output tables will any charge be levied. While dozens of statistical tables are derived from the census, help is available when it comes to finding the information that you need. Alongside the statistics themselves, ONS publishes Statistical Bulletins that summarise the key issues for each set of figures published. There are also a number of ‘short stories’ that offer some analysis of some themes such as methods of travel to work, the provision of unpaid care and families and households. There is even a selection of interactive maps and graphics that make finding the data you need easier and more interesting. To explore the range of census data, visit the Office for National Statistics website at www.ons.gov.uk/census, or contact Census Customer Services (01329 444972 or CensusCustomerServices@ons.gov.uk) While you may still need the advice of a professional, you will have a clearer basis on which to make an informed decision.

Britannic Garden Furniture Ltd
01454 411601 sales@britannic-teak.co.uk When it comes to garden seats, Britannic Garden Furniture leaves the opposition standing. Not for nothing is this West Country company Britain's leading manufacturer of genuine hardwood garden furniture. Street furniture, park or garden (public and private) seating are just part of the story. Briannic’s skilled craftspeople can turn their collective hand to planters, tables, stools and special bespoke commissions. “Whether you are seeking classic, traditional or modern, we’re sure you will appreciate the individuality and quality of our outdoor furniture,” says manager Tony Williams. From its factory in Alveston, near Bristol, Britannic, awarded the FSC Chain of Custody for hardwoods certificated by The Forest Stewardship Council, sends products worldwide. All have been made by experts, many of whom have a lifetime's experience in the timber and furniture industries and have pioneered new designs and manufacturing methods, and some can be seen in some very prestigious places indeed, including several of London’s Royal parks. Meanwhile Broadmead shoppers rest their weary feet by sitting on one of the available modern benches in stainless steel and iroko. Designed by Richard Wollerton of Voss Street Furniture and manufactured by Britannic, there are several throughout the busy shopping quarter. Britannic has existed in its present form for 26 years but been trading with other partners for more than 40. Everyone at the company is proud of its lengthy history and of its record of employing local craftsmen and training apprentices. Like any successful, decades-old business, it has learnt how to survive through good times and bad and the current downturn, which Tony cites as one of its greatest challenges, is no exception. Britannic has continued to grow and is preparing new products as part of its 2013 focus on developing its retail trade. Special commissions remain a treasured part of the business. Here is where Britannic achieved what Tony hails as one of its greatest successes, designing and manufacturing benches for English Heritage, the Museum of Welsh Life and Greenwich Naval College - working entirely from an image. “We’re always delighted to undertake special commissions and have done so for the National Trust, interior designers and landscape architects,” he says. “Whether you have a unique design in mind or simply want a variation on one of our existing pieces, we can produce something to your exact requirements.”
16
Some of Britannic’s furniture is available in oak but all comes in teak or iroko, universally regarded as the best amongst hardwoods for outdoor furniture because of their durability, stability and resistance to wear. “We only use that which is certified as coming from well-managed and controlled plantations with planned programmes of replanting,” adds Tony. Britannic welcomes visitors to its factory and showroom to see the creative process and its range of products, but you can also view its furniture on line, alongside examples of individual designs and commissioned reproductions.
Visit www.britannic-teak.co.uk, where you can also order or email an enquiry. To discuss a commission or, for further information, telephone 01454 411601.

Federation of Master Builders The Federation of Master Builders (FMB), founded in 1941, is the largest trade organisation in UK construction, with almost 10,000 member firms. To join the FMB building firms must have their work inspected, and once accepted they must follow a strict code of professional conduct. This way the FMB drives up standards in the building industry, and cracks down on cowboys. Membership of the FMB is a real badge of professionalism, so to find out more about the benefits of joining please visit
www.fmb.org.uk/join-fmb A big part of building trust in Britain’s builders lies in promoting the fabulous work the FMB’s member firms do for their clients, especially via the Master Builder of the Year Awards, which honour the best of British building. This year, at a gala celebration in London hosted by architect and TV presenter George Clarke, Midlands’ firm Graline Construction won the Midlands Regional Energy Efficiency award, and Jewel Builders won the Midlands Regional Medium Renovation Project category. The awards are a rare chance for satisfied clients to nominate their builder for a nationally recognised award, with the overall Master Builder of the Year winner driving off in a brand new Nissan light commercial vehicle worth more than £20,000. This year’s winners were 3W Developments Ltd from Shrawley, Worcestershire. To find out more about their winning project and to keep an
eye out for upcoming news on how to enter the next awards, see www.fmb.org.uk/about/mas ter-builder-of-the-year
•
Ask family, friends and neighbours to recommend builders they have used recently;
•
Search for professionals in your area on the FMB website at www.fmb.org.uk/fab;
•
Produce a detailed written brief of the work you want done, including plans and drawings;
•
Invite at least three contractors to your site, show them the plans and ask them to quote;
•
Ask the contractors for references from previous customers and follow them up with a phone call and visit to see their work for yourself;
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
Finally, if you are looking for a trusted builder or tradesman in your area, whether for a small repair job or a bold and inspirational project like this year’s Master Builder of the Year winners’, then follow these simple steps to ensure a job well done:
•
Check that the quotations include EVERYTHING that you would like doing – including removal of rubbish and making good;
•
Don’t award a job on price alone. Consider references and how well you got on;
•
Check that the builder has the appropriate level of public liability insurance for your job;
•
Set yourself a budget and build in some contingency funding, 15 per cent of the total cost of the work is usually about right;
•
Agree a payment plan to suit you and your builder, never pay the full cost of the project up front, and don’t be pressured into letting the builder start work before you are ready.
•
Always draw up a written contract with your builder – you can download template contracts for free on the FMB website at www.fmb.org.uk/findabuilder/free-contracts

R J Wevill Builders
There was a glittering end to a truly sparkling 2012 for Devon’s R J Wevill Builder - now poised for another crowning moment to start 2013.
In R J Wevill Builder’s case it was for the conversion of an old barn building in Lifton into a five-star holiday barn. The company, based at Yeat Farm, in Lifton, is no stranger to customer recommendation which has been instrumental in its growth and enviable reputation for quality and professionalism.
The business ended its diamond anniversary year as the Federation of Master Buillders’ (FMB) South West region winner in its Commercial category for projects under £5 million.
Established by Rodney’s father Russell as a property maintenance and general building firm, it was soon undertaking larger and larger projects over a greater area and, within 10 years employed several local craftsmen and tradespeople. The projects continued to get larger in the next 30 years and Rodney, taking over upon his father’s retirement in 1993, continued the high standards and professionalism the firm’s now extensive client base had come to expect. Now MD Rodney Wevill and his team are anticipating March 20, when the national winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony in London. For Rodney, the achievement is a major business success, ranking right up there with his firm’s ability to maintain a loyal and satisfied customer base throughout 60 years of trading and a building badge of honour all award nominees were suggested by clients.

“From initial consultation, estimate, design and planning and quotation, we cover a project, from start to completion; specialising in listed building renovations and working with traditional materials such as lime mortars, working with cob and stone and peg slating. “We also carry out disabled facility works, including building access and wet rooms, and regularly work with local authorities.” Like a builder on a ladder the economy has had plenty of ups and downs and with increased red tape, the need to understand new technologies and materials and produce better standards and greener buildings to lessen the impact on the West Country environment - all while moving forward, remain challenges, says Rodney.

SOUTH COAST Building Supplies Gary Ellis is the first to agree that establishing a brand new builders merchant’s just as the economy went into freefall, presented one of his biggest business challenges to date. So you can understand his pride and delight in reporting that his greatest business success lies in South Coast Building Supplies’ achievement of turning in a profit every year since its 2008 launch and doing nothing but grow. It’s already set up two centres - one in Poole Lane, Bournemouth, the other in Southampton’s Bakers Wharf - and the expansion shows no sign of stopping. Gary announces: “We’re relocating our Southampton depot to a bigger, better situated site across the city while our medium term plan is to open a third depot once the correct opportunity has been identified.” Following a drop in the property sector, former developer Gary set up the business in August 2008, with the aim of supplying building materials to the Dorset and Hampshire area. In 2008/9 he recorded a turnover of £3.3m. By 2011/12 it stood at 6.3m. Confident that it offers the best prices on orders large or small, South Coast Building Supplies stocks an extensive range of products, including bricks, blocks, tools, paving, timber, aggregates, drainage, plasterboard and sheet materials. All are available at both branches or via the comprehensive online store.
“We will continue to build that reputation for great customer service, as well as our product knowledge and the quality and value of the products we supply,” promises Gary. “At South Coast Building Supplies we offer a one-stop shop for all building projects.” For more information about the company, depot opening times and products, or to order online, visit
www.scbs-ltd.co.uk Alternatively, or for a quote or advice, call 01202 573389 (Bournemouth) or 02380 336748 (Southampton)
They’re particularly proud of their free brick matching service. “All customers need to do is submit a picture of their existing brick and we will scour the market to find an exact match,” promises Gary. “If your brick is no longer in production we will find a suitable alternative. In most cases we can provide samples before any orders need to be placed and we will find the best solution.” The extensive product range is complemented by the wealth of knowledge of all the friendly staff who are happy to advise trade and DIY customers alike. There’s a free delivery service across the Dorset and Hampshire area for all orders above £100 + VAT and a next-day service for those placed before 11am. Thanks to South Coast Building Supplies’ own fleet of vehicles which range from from 1.5t to 32t, both with and without hi-ab cranes, these deliveries can be of all sizes and types an via all manner of access. Delivering exactly what customers want has always been a high priority for the company which enjoys a reputation for doing just that.

The innovative team at On Site Framing is always looking to try something new. “Because we understand that every customer has different needs we provide the most versatile and tailored solution for both self-builders and construction professionals by preparing, cutting and erecting our timber frames on site - something no other timber frame company is offering.” The process provides further flexibility, enabling Dan’s team, all of whom are NVQ level 3 trained, to make adjustments, such as window openings, doors, design adjustment and foundation/slab discrepancies, mid build. Their ability to cut most of their roofs on site has also enabled the company to make bespoke roof design its speciality and, overall, its method is proving a real winner with clients on the cost savings front.
If it’s not one of their own industry mould-breaking innovations, suggestions to apply their expert timber frame-building skills in new areas are always eagerly received.
In fact, says Dan, On Site Framing’s completion of an airport terminal building with a control tower at St Just, gave the client a considerable saving on the timber frame.
“We’re a very versatile company,” declares Dan Fielder, founder of this Truro business whose flexibility extends to constructing its frames on site, enabling them to fulfil the individual requirement of every customer.
The project was a major coup for the business which started trading in June 2010. Since then it has built more than 32 timber frames, including one for an eco house where it was able to bring the U value down to one of the lowest achieved in England. “Nine out of ten self builders want to use a timber frame for properties or extensions, as it complies with the building regulations, and helps keep up with the more demanding insulation values,” he adds.
22
Its three-man workforce has now become two employees and 14 sub-contractors on site at any one time and Dan is now focusing on expanding into St Austell and north Cornwall with some new contracts already lined up in Plymouth.
10867 2pg_HorseWorld 21/06/2013 22:35 Page 2
We handle full or partial builds, can achieve very good U values and always work with our clients’ budget in mind to achieve a solution that works best for both parties,” states Dan. “Our timber is from renewable sources and supplied by Travis Perkins, a winning combination because, thanks to its wide range of delivery vehicles, no site is out of our reach.

Mercury recognises the importance of customer satisfaction and work to exceed customer expectations. Regular communication takes place with their customers to discuss feedback on performance and keep them fully updated on progress and agreed milestones. The company has also established excellent working relationships with a number of Architects, Structural Engineers and Building Surveyors with the result that Mercury are able to provide a full design and build service. In a further source of pride for the company, they have an excellent track record for health and safety issues. Formed in 2006 with just a handful of employees, award winning, Plymouth based, Mercury Construction SW Ltd, has developed into a well established organisation providing top quality construction and maintenance services to a wide range of sectors, throughout the South West.
Mercury is accredited by: Exor, ContractorPlus, Constructionline, CHAS, FMB, NHBC, BM TRADA and SMAS. We are also accredited to ISO 9001 and 14001 Newton Abbot College – Recent Project Mercury Construction are delighted to have just been awarded the third phase of an extensive programme of new-build and refurbishment at Newton Abbot College, following their successful completion of the first two phases including the construction of new Art block, comprehensive refurbishment of the Modern Foreign Languages block and external refurbishment of the Creative Arts Centre.
Their growth required a move into larger premises in Plymouth and as a further development; they have also opened a second office in Newton Abbot. The company has an experienced team of employees, which include all the construction trades, and only employ suitably qualified and experienced staff in addition to their well regarded, award winning, apprenticeship scheme. When we asked Steve Welch, MD, about his company, and of what aspect he was most proud, he said; “Founding and expanding a successful construction business during one of the toughest periods for the industry in living memory.” He added: “This could not have been achieved without building a strong team of dedicated, competent people along with a reputation to match, and our strong commitment to training the future of the industry with our apprentices.” Many of Mercury’s team have worked together for over 20 years; this relationship is evident through the quality of work produced and the company’s ability to get the job done The company provide a comprehensive construction and maintenance service to commercial, industrial, healthcare and educational clients, catering for everything from minor reactive maintenance tasks to design and build of new projects. Mercury are pleased to include in their client base, local and regional Property Management Companies and Architects as well as numerous Retail, Industrial, Educational and Healthcare establishments throughout the South West. Mercury has a proven track record of completing projects on time and within budget. They are very proud of the standard of work, attention to detail and good relationships with their clients that have resulted, over the years, in awards for New Build Projects, Civil Engineering Schemes and Listed Buildings.
24
The work will include upgrading the building's insulation considerably, re-roofing, replacing the electrical system and improving the heating," said Ben Brook, business manager at the college. "The building will also be enhanced internally with decoration and lighting works and externally the new insulation will be overclad with cedar cladding to match the rest of our newlyrefurbished buildings. "The students will have a significantly improved environment in which to learn, as well as classrooms which stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.” Mercury Construction is working closely with the college to minimise disruption to the teaching schedule, with all the work which would interrupt teaching taking place over the summer holiday period. On the subject of teaching or training, one of Mercury Construction’s apprentices, Daniel Saltmarsh, has been particularly successful in the Federation of Master Builders Awards.
10936 3pg 2_Feature Template 10/07/2013 09:59 Page 2
Every year the entries reflect a builder’s depth of knowledge from mastery of traditional craft skills to working with the latest energy-efficient and sustainable technologies. And, just as importantly, their understanding of the crucial importance of friendly, polite and thoughtful customer service throughout the building process with many going that extra mile to deliver a project that exceeds the customer's expectations. Daniel has won South West apprentice of the Year, and was only narrowly “pipped at the post” for the National Award.
The award is given to an apprentice demonstrating high levels of practical skill in their chosen trade. The employer is also presented with an award by the Cross Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force. Daniel is a painting and decorating apprentice who struggled to find an apprenticeship in the first year of his training, but was taken on by Mercury Construction after participating in the preapprenticeship work experience scheme Pathway to Construction with the firm.

Daniel has completed a level two diploma and NVQ in painting and decorating, and is working towards his level three qualifications with help from tutors at City College Plymouth. Daniel has made an impressive start to his career, winning the South West heat of SkillBuild 2012 in the Painting and Decorating category and coming second in the regional heat of the Dulux Apprentice of the Year competition. Jo Welch, Director at Mercury Construction, said: "Daniel is an excellent team member willing to learn from others and has proven himself to be very reliable and polite to customers. Daniel always takes pride in his work. Now in the third year of his apprenticeship there is no doubt he can be trusted to do a fantastic job." The future for the construction industry is looking brighter thanks to several well publicised government initiatives. Some of our major developers and building societies are reporting a modest resurgence of interest and that more activity is starting to come through.

Conversions, renovations, loft conversions, repairs, maintenance, roofing, plastering, electricals and general building services, Clayton Construction a small, award winning, privately owned building company which provides a consistently high standard of workmanship, can do it all. The company is owned by Mark Orchard and is a member of the Federation of Master Builders and an approved ETERNIT Slating contractor. The company specialise in roofing and tiling repairs, with Mark himself being very highly qualified in that area. They also carry out general maintenance and building repairs. The team contains specialists in all fields of property maintenance including N.I.C.E.I.C Registered Electricians, C.I.T.B qualified carpenters, plasterers, tilers and decorators Small is beautiful, it means close personal attention to every project. When Mark chose to take a well earned break in Kenya he imagined that he would be leaving work behind. Little did he realise that the skills honed in loft conversions and barn restorations in the green Somerset hills, were about to be called upon in the dust and heat of the Kenyan sunshine. While visiting Watamu in Kenya, Mark met children from the Dabaso Primary School. Looking at some part dug foundations, the villagers explained to him that the building was intended to be a school for the local children. When he heard that it had already taken 10 years to raise the funds to buy building materials, and was told that the structure would take many more years to complete, his reaction was instinctive: “My lads could get it done in no time!” Members of the company, once he was back in the UK, quickly volunteered to work with him, unpaid, alongside the villagers to finish the project. Reg Daniels, Dave Rayner, Andy Difford and Chris Fisher, and Mark, together with a quarter of a ton of tools, flew to Kenya - with the help of suppliers, who assisted with costs. The conditions were hard; extreme heat, unfamiliar materials, no running water or electricity. The men worked into the night from early morning, ably assisted by local labourers, who were paid double time to speed up the work, and completed the project in two weeks.
Mark and the team are now honorary tribesmen and have been given traditional Swahili names, Mark was named Ngumbao, meaning hero, and presented with a hand-carved stick of honour! The successful project, undertaken in such difficult conditions truly demonstrates the company’s versatility and commitment to completing a job well done. The work done in Kenya commenced back in 1999 and on this year Clayton Construction received the “People of the Year Award” from the Prime Minister. Mark Orchard was instrumental in getting Hutton to twin with Dabaso which started off the twinning committee. The company also received “Pioneer Award” from the Queen in 2003.
Mark has returned to Kenya over the years, building more classrooms, medical centre and library and over the years his Son, James Orchard, has taken on a Carpentry Apprenticeship and has worked with his father in Kenya. The company strives on its family and ethical principles and has recently been nominated for the Local Authority Awards on its conversion of barns in Hutton Village. We work tirelessly with customers to develop their dreams and goals and to bring a project in on budget and to a high standard. Their customers both large and small come back to them time after time, not only private householders and small businesses, but major companies, local authorities, sports clubs, medical centres and insurance companies rely on their prompt, friendly, and professional services.

Based in North Somerset, Wessex Restoration is a historical and traditional building renovation company that provides replacement, replication, refurbishment and restoration services for timber windows, doors and roofs in properties in Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, Taunton, London and across the UK.
Primarily operating within the heritage and conservation markets, Wessex Restoration specialises in period style window and door joinery manufacturing and refurbishment, and can supply and install a wide range of timber products including cills, skirting boards and architraves, which can be machined to match your property’s original profiles for a consistent look. Whether you’re looking for new or replacement timber windows or doors, we can help with our bespoke joinery manufacturing services and vast experience in timber window installation and replacement. We offer historic single glazed sash windows, modern double glazed sash windows and casement windows that can be manufactured using various ethically sourced timber species, including hardwood and European Redwood.
In instances where local authorities will not allow slim line double glazing to be installed, Wessex is able to supply you with ultra slim line double glazed shutters that provide the same level of insulation whilst remaining sympathetic to the buildings original design. Our double glazed shutters do not interfere with the normal sashes during winter and can fold away discreetly in the summer for a practical alternative to our slimline double glazing. Changes to the Fire Safety Law means that owners of nondomestic properties are now responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone who uses the premises, however, listed buildings have a unique requirement in that any replacement doors need to retain the original period detail and style of construction, creating a conflict between fire requirements and The Listed Building Act.
Our sash windows feature an intrinsic removal system to allow painting and maintenance to be carried out from the inside, thus eliminating the need for unsightly and expensive scaffolding, saving you time and money in the long run. Period timber windows are normally unable to accommodate double glazed units, and many planning authorities object to double glazing being installed in listed buildings and sensitive conservation areas. Wessex Restoration can supply and install slimline double glazing in both new and existing windows, providing you with a cost effective thermal insulation solution that doesn’t compromise your property’s appearance. Wessex Restoration supplies and installs Slimlite double glazed units that can significantly improve the thermal efficiency of your timber windows without spoiling their original period features. By using a smaller gap between units which is filled with gas, slimline double glazed units can achieve an energy rating on par with standard double glazing with the added benefits of increased aesthetic appeal.
28
Wessex Restoration is able to replicate period timber doors without the use of intumescent coatings, allowing the doors to be either painted or finished with a clear coat as well as allowing us to maintain fire safety compliancy using our unique certified fire rating system.

SLIMLITE CHANGES THE FACE OF DOUBLE GLAZING Slimlite Self-cleaning has an invisible glass coating which forms a permanent covalent fused bond to the glass at a few atoms thick nanoscale structure which cannot be removed by water cleaning agents or high pressure equipment and is more scratch resistant than ordinary glass and improves Light Transmission by about 2%. The nanoscale coating is water and dust repellent and dramatically changes the rain water sheeting effect to a small scattered globule effect improving vision and accelerating the downwards action of the globules carrying away most surface dirt, depending on the amount of rain.
Fire rated glass including Georgian wired glass can be incorporated, along with appropriate fire rated self-closers, furniture and hardware. What’s more, Wessex Restoration also offers a regular servicing contract to ensure that your doors retain their fire resistant rating.

The nanoscale coating changes the original glass surface from Hydrophillic (Water Loving) to Hydrophobic (Water Hating) activating a self-cleaning action.

It may only be just half way through 2013, but the year is already shaping up to be Aqua Construction’s busiest ever. And there’s even more good news - the Gloucester house builder’s founder and managing director Jason Wasley reports that there’s further prospects ahead for the company. He’s not denying the harsh economic climate has posed one of the firm’s biggest business challenges, however, he says: “We’ve completed 35 new homes so far in this, our best year to date, with 2014 looking even better already.” Good news indeed for Aqua’s skilled team of locally employed direct labour, sub-contractors and young apprentices. It’s also good news for would-be home owners seeking new properties that have been built to the highest possible standards using, where possible, sustainable construction materials and which follow the strictest environmental guidelines. From its headquarters on the Waterwells Business Park, Quedgeley, Aqua Construction provides full design and build services to house builders, housing associations, district councils, commercial and private clients. It also builds homes for open market sales through its associate company Parkend Developments Ltd. Having built more than 350 homes since Jason founded the company in 1997, it has established a reputation for delivering client satisfaction through its good working relationships with architects, engineers and other professionals who work as part of a team.
It also insists that all its suppliers provide evidence to show they either have their own EMS, or are ISO 14001 registered too. With such impeccable green credentials, it’s probably no surprise to learn that out of a lengthy list of awards and achievements, the one that has brought the greatest pleasure, and which Jason rates as his company’s greatest success, is winning the 2010 Gloucester City Council Best Climate Friendly award. “This was in recognition for our development of 14 flats in Parkend Road Gloucester, in which we installed a ground source heat pump system,” he explains. “It made the building extremely energy efficient.” For further information about the services offered by Aqua Construction or to view its portfolio, please visit

“We’ve demonstrating many times over that we can meet the various standards and codes required to compete in today’s market,” he adds. No matter what project it’s working on, or where it is - Aqua Construction covers a radius of up to 80 miles from Gloucester environmental considerations are given high priority. Aside from the preference for using sustainable materials where possible, the ISO 14001 accredited company has its own Environmental Management System (EMS) in place and has set targets for reducing carbon emissions year on year.

It’s incredible what can be achieved by one man and his JCB. That was how Alan Smith launched Smith’s (Gloucester) Ltd back in 1982 - in 2013 he’s the head of a multi-million pound company that employs more than 400 and provides construction services and waste management across the South West and Wales. About to introduce more services and busily involved with major building projects, Smiths continues to be one of Gloucestershire’s biggest and best success stories and enjoys its reputation as one of the region’s largest and most respected companies in its sector.
This year sees Smiths, based in Stonehouse, set to offer even more services, with drains services, event waste management and the diversification of the waste management customer base in the pipeline. Also well under way is a major project at Metz Way, Gloucester, which sees Smiths working alongside other major contractors to transform a rundown railway triangle into a light industrial park and a major supermarket development. The company has just started work on building a new Sainsbury's on the front at Penzance.
Its story is one that mirrors the pace of change and constantly changing requirements of the industry.
Alan started by carrying out groundworks with that one JCB and, as the work grew, added other services, including demolition and transport, to provide support services to the main function of construction. External work was later taken on as the success of the business continued. Changes in legislation around the management of waste saw the establishment of the waste management division in the early 2000’s and Smiths invested in a material recycling facility at Moreton Valence and waste transfer stations in Avonmouth, Tewkesbury and Cardiff.
As would be expected, Smiths has come a long way from its small contractor roots but, even as it enjoys major employer status, its founder declares that neither he or anyone else in his team are complacent. “Managing its growth through the construction industry downturns over the past 30 years has been one of our greatest challenges,” he says, “but all our people are dedicated and work incredibly hard. “We are gaining market share in the waste management and recycling sector and we are currently exploring the future of biomass energy.
“I am very positive about the future and I am looking forward to the challenges that will come as we climb out of the current difficulties in the wider economy." The company now maintains six business streams: construction, demolition, transport, plant hire, skip hire and waste management, with each area able to support another in delivering services to customers. Says Alan: “Our years of experience and knowledge of the industries in which we operate, enable us to work with customers in a straightforward and professional manner, delivering what we promise, when we promise it.”

months TBKS hopes to secure the contract to supply the ironmongery to the Gainsborough Hotel, a new 98 bedroom hotel development opposite the Thermae Spa in the Bath city centre. There’s already been much to celebrate including the addition of an apprentice to the small, expert team and developing a working relationship with the Brooking Collection of Architectural Detail. Then there’s the contracts to supply ironmongry for Bath’s Georgian Museum, Help for Heroes’ Tedworth House, in Wiltshire, and Wells Cathedral’s refurbishment of the Camery Building Visitor Centre. From corner shop to international quality ironmongery supplier - the Roman gods have smiled kindly on Bath’s TBKS down the decades. So it’s fitting that the company launched a product range after Cardea, the Roman goddess of doors and thresholds TBKS’s success owes less to a little ancient divine intervention and more to its enviable track record of getting things right first time every time by utilising its wealth of knowledge and expertise.
Trading as an architectural ironmonger for over 30 years, the family firm moved from its city centre retail outlet, near the Roman Baths, to the Locksbrook Trading Estate in 1998, transforming into the leading supplier of Ironmongery it is today.
Out of all these successes, Richard says that: “Supplying the ironmongery for the refurbishment of the Governor’s residence on Tortola, British Virgin Islands was a great and rewarding project and has enabled us to forge strong links with companies in the BVI and in the Caribbean.” For more information about TBKS including location and opening hours visit the website www.tbks.co.uk where you are also able view products and order goods. With a location just out of city centre, with ample car parking, you are very welcome to visit the TBKS showroom or you can contact Richard and the team on 01225 462090 or by email sales@tbks.co.uk for help, advice or to simply make a purchase.
“We have developed strong relationships with all the UK’s leading ironmongery manufacturers and are able to offer a wide range of quality products at competitive and affordable prices,” says managing director Richard Grattidge. Indeed, the list of products - TBKS has one of the widest ranges of door and window furniture in the UK - and services is impressive. • Architectural British-made ironmongery for period renovations and refurbishments from manufacturers including Samuel Heath, Frank Allart, Kirkpatrick and Croft. • Trade ironmongery for modern building schemes, repairs and replacements. • Advice, guidance and problem-solving from Guild of Architectural Ironmongery (GAI)-trained staff • Free scheduling and quoting service. • Lock repair shop and key cutting by a GAI-trained Master Locksmith. “We can help if you require window furniture for a heritage building project or contemporary fittings for prestigious new developments” advises Richard. “Our Bath location gives us a unique understanding of listed buildings projects and, as acknowledged experts, we supply for any type of construction, be it a barn conversion, property extension, school or hotel” says Richard. TBKS’s growth is not confined to the UK and the website-driven mail order business plays a very important role. In the coming

Roof-Craft Quality, craftsmanship, and value for money. All of these can be found, literally, under one roof when Herefordshire’s Roof-Craft is involved. When it comes to the top of a building, this family firm has got it covered, be it in slates, tiles, shingles and more, bringing its skilled services on a supply and fix basis to major contractors within the county and beyond. The business was originally established in 1964 but partners Ray Powell and Colin Anderson have been at the helm for the last 20 years after more than two decades working on roofs themselves.
“We have a highly skilled team with a wealth of experience working on both modern and more traditional style roofs. “This flexibility and transferability of skills is partly due to our older, more experienced employees mentoring the younger, less experienced members of staff and bringing out the best in them.” The combination of quality service and value for money is proving a winner for the company. Not only has it resulted in customers returning 30 years later for further work to their properties, it has, like a Roof-Craft roof, proved worthy shelter from the recent economic storms.
In that time they’ve transformed Roof-Craft into a leading player in its field, developing and building its reputation for excellence. This has led to many prestigious contracts with the Duchy of Cornwall Estate and the Ministry of Defence, along with many schools and churches. One prominent contract included working on the refurbishment of the grounds at Hereford Cathedral. “It was great to be able to work with different materials as the buildings were oak-clad and that included oak shingles to the roof,” remembers Ray. “It was a great pleasure to be involved with the restoration project at one of the most important buildings in our home city.” Based at Knockerhill Farm, Callow, Roof-Craft comprises a successful team of six, with brothers, sons and nephews of the partners all having roles in the business. This is boosted by a proven network of sub-contractors, including roofers who can be called upon when an extra pair of skilled hands is required and other construction personnel such as scaffolders and lead men. “We don’t work on flat roofs, all our skills are bought to bear on traditional pitched roofs,” says Ray.
Proud to be supporting Roofcraft
“Things are good for us and we don’t feel there is any need to change our business approach,” acknowledges Ray. “Roof-Craft provides a good quality service for the right price and we believe that we are good value for money. “This does not mean being the cheapest on the block, just the best when it comes to the standards of our work and the way in which we treat all our customers, big or small.”

Acheson Construction Ltd of Dorchester has just completed a ÂŁ1.9M conversion and fit out of an existing office building to form a Pathology Laboratory in Lisieux Way, Taunton, Somerset.
The building is of traditional masonry construction with a structural steel portal frame and insitu cast concrete floors. An entire strip out programme was undertaken with removal of the whole interior including all partitions, finishings, services and ceilings, and following completion of the work, it now complies with HBN15 and HTM63. Work has covered some 2,550sq m over two floors and has been carried out to a fast track programme to meticulous detail. Acheson has worked closely with the client in order to provide detailed coordination of the design and implementation of the works and the contract has had a successful outcome for all parties. Acheson Construction Ltd was appointed by Ashley House plc, the third party developer of the project for the clients SPS which is a Joint Venture between Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and private sector partners – Integrated Pathology Partnerships (IPP). Established in 2011, SPS took responsibility for delivering the full range of laboratory services to Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, serving a population of 500,000 and over 100 GP Practices. Founded in 1991, its business was predominantly in the public sector, with Health a particular strength. Oakland is now one of the major providers of refurbishment and al-terations to NHS facilities, including medical centres in Bath and Bristol.
Celebrations for the completion of a £1.3m school extension combined with a very positive looking order book, means 2013 is proceeding nicely for Oakland Construction.
“The NHS poses the most complex challenges, with the increasing pace of change, in-novation and introduction of new technologies and a 24-hour working environment with staffed and occupied premises either in the working area or nearby,” says managing director Jawad Shalash. “After more than 21 years with this sector, we are very experienced in working with professional consultants, staff and often very vulnerable and sick patients to deliver major environmental change with minimum interruption and inconvenience.”
The Bristol contractor is in a good position to see its involvement with private business and public sector works enable it to maintain its approximate £2m turnover during the next financial year. In fact two more school projects are in prospect for this summer.
More recent expansion has seen Oakland move into the education sector as well as taking on private industry projects such as shopping centres and children's nurseries, all of which also have challenges.
In a sector which has been one of the hardest hit by the economic downturn, Oakland Construction is optimistic for the future.
“To avoid disruption to teaching we are often asked to work on school projects during the holidays, which gives a very limited timescale to complete the works,” says Jawad.

BYRNE & KING LTD When you’re building a home fit for heroes, you only want to use the very best. That’s why the Help for Heroes charity turned to the best of British, Byrne & King, when it was building its fourth recovery centre for the very best of British - injured Armed Forces personnel. The Wiltshire company worked on the conversion of a manor house into the specialised accommodation that is Tedworth House, handling all aspects of the earthworks; drainage; asphalt; road markings; tree clearance; soft strip and the construction of a three-storey RC building, including a 4m deep basement. This was a very special project indeed, but Byrne & King is no stranger to prestigious schemes - after 17 years in the construction industry its skills have been bought to bear on a huge range of domestic and commercial enterprises.
They’ve never wavered from that goal, and have only reinforced it by ensuring they use the very best, highly skilled and professional operatives. That is why, after nearly two decades of success, much of the company’s work is repeat business and word-of-mouth recommendations. Now enjoying an annual turnover of nearly £5million, Byrne and King, which has held steady through the last five turbulent economic years, is moving forward, continuing to successfully complete contracts and win new and repeat business. Primarily operating across the south of the country, it’s also worked on schemes in the Midlands and Wales and will send its teams even further afield pending a project’s scope and contract size.
Other schemes with which it has been involved include the Weston Apron extension at Bristol Airport, the complete groundworks package for a new energy recycling facility on the banks of the River Ouse and the upgrading and extension of Mogden Sewage Treatment Works at Twickenham. The company was founded in 1995 by Tony Byrne and Shaun King, who, with more than 50 years previous experience between them, wanted to provide building, contracting and plant hire services of outstanding quality and fantastic customer service.
Based in Chiseldon, Swindon, Ridgeway Construction is a specialist contracting company committed to providing the highest level of service. We at Ridgeway are proud to be supporting Byrne & King Ltd Call us now on 01793 741625 or visit our website www w.ridgewayconstruction.co.uk .ridgewayc

Byrne & King is not just about providing top quality manpower, however, its plant hire division is also highly successful, enabling clients to undertake construction and excavation work with or without its experienced operators.
The company is proud of the competitive rates it offers for this service and will deliver all full serviced items, which it maintains in tip-top condition, to site to suit individual requirements.

The changing landscape
of British Cities Britain’s cities are changing. New life is being breathed back into areas long associated with decay and deprivation. The last few years following the financial meltdown have been harsh, but you could view the nation’s cities as engines of required, yet seemingly elusive, economic growth. The government certainly does. In fact it sees them as critical to recovery and one of its key objectives is to make cities places where people want to live, work, play and invest. It is already proposing to relax change of use planning laws in the hope that the move will promote regeneration of commercial land and help bring empty commercial buildings back into productive use. But that’s just one of the newest measures. For decades cities up and down the land have been transforming inner acres of land into must-be places. Chic apartment blocks, sparkling glasswalled office complexes, upmarket industrial estates and busy shopping thoroughfares are being and have been created on sites that previously sported abandoned ruins, rubble and shattered glass. Victorian factories, once the engine rooms of Empire are now humming with activity again - transformed into arts venues, museums or hubs for white collar companies and bluechip ventures. Indeed, looking to the past is proving instrumental in building for the future. Putting resources into a neighbourhood because of the value of what is already there, rather than labeling it as deprived, builds community and business confidence, says English Heritage, pointing out that finding an alternative use for functionally redundant industrial sites presents one of the best opportunities of securing their long-term future. “Conservation-led regeneration in town and countryside encourages private-sector investment both by retaining businesses and people in an area and by providing an incentive to relocate to it,” says a spokesman. Whether it’s revitalising older buildings or making sweeping changes to the local landscape, you don’t have to look much further Birmingham and Bristol for worldleading examples of inner city regeneration. In the late 1980s, early 1990s Birmingham started transforming the derelict run-down
heartland, once home to the factories which powered its industrial domination, into what has since been described as one of the most impressive and successful inner city mixeduse developments in the country. Brindley Place, next to the International Convention Centre and the National Indoor Arena, which themselves are reviving the Broad Street area, is now home to some of the UK’s leading businesses, the workplace for nearly 9,000 people and, with its myriad restaurants and bars, a thriving and vibrant location day and night. Likewise the dockland areas of Bristol, whose importance as a port had given it national prominence for centuries, went into near terminal decline following the arrival of cargo ships too large to navigate the Avon River. Competition from new docks at Avonmouth and Portbury didn’t help. The ripple effect saw the city, now with vast tracts of derelict land, facing growing social and economic inequalities and, in some areas high unemployment. In the 1980s the frustrations boiled over into nights of rioting. After obtaining multi-million pound private and public funding packages, the city council started revamping the problem sites and, 30 years later, having created more than 3,000 jobs, the area is unrecognisable. It’s also one of the largest redevelopment projects in Europe and, with the arrival of an IMAX theatre, at-Bristol science museum, the Millennium Square, and the Watershed media centre, is rated as one of the UKs best harbour-side redevelopments in the UK. Both cities are now playing leading roles in the Government’s efforts for growth as each have one of the 24 national Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEP), and are in turn creating Enterprise Zones offering incentives to support new and expanding businesses. In March, Andy Street, the head of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP spoke to business leaders of his optimism about the region’s growing potential, confirming that inward investment growth in the LEP area grew by 40% in 2012, against a national figure of -2%. He also drew attention to the LEP’s pivotal role as a national pilot area for Lord Heseltine’s No Stone Unturned report, saying it represented “tremendous opportunities”.
Bristol in the meantime, has welcomed the new partnership and zone initiatives, saying both are helping to drive economic growth and will help unlock potential more quickly, creating jobs and prosperity. The city, home to one of the biggest silicon design clusters outside of Silicon Valley, believes its wealth of creative and digital media industries will be at the heart of Britain’s economic recovery and its West of England LEP is well positioned to capitalise on the continued growth of its knowledge-intensive industries such as aerospace, environmental technologies and advanced engineering. And so the changes continue, propelling the cities forward into the 21st century with optimisim and confidence, flying in the face of the economic doom mongers. Among the sites already progressing within Birmingham’s Enterprise Zone are the £450 million transformation of Paradise Circus and the relocation of the historic Assay Office to the £160 million Kettleworks development in the Jewellery Quarter. Meanwhile the dark, crowded underground New Street rail station is undergoing an £88 million facelift into a bright modern transport hub, doubling passenger capacity, reviving the surrounding area and creating around 5,000 jobs. Bristol continues to develop the creative people and networks critical to economically successful city regions. Its economy has proved relatively resilient during the recession but major growth is predicted as its worldclass knowledge economy based on aerospace, defence, engineering, ICT and electronics, financial services, media, creative and environmental industries blossom. It, too, has its fair share of regeneration schemes are taking place across the city, such as the Gainsborough Square initiative, where the council is to spend up to £2.5 million on shops, green space and other facilities for Lockleaze residents. So while we may not be economically out of the woods yet it’s cities like Birmingham and Bristol, with their willingness, foresight and confidence to change that are showing us the way forward.

THORPE & HUNTER CHARTERED ARCHITECTS
When it comes to building their dream home, extension, loft conversion, garden room or renovation project, homeowners find themselves faced with a number of hurdles.
Thorpe and Hunter is a Bristol and Gloucestershire based practice formed in 2008 to provide an architectural service to builders, home owners and developers.
Before planning permission can be granted, plans and drawings must be prepared and all necessary building regulations including those that pertain to listed buildings and conservation areas taken into account.
Led by Philip Thorpe, an architect with 30 years experience in designing housing schemes throughout the West Country, South Wales and Central England, the practice also provides a comprehensive service of design and planning for home owners, national and local developers. Philip takes much pleasure in the work he does for private homeowners and has earned an outstanding reputation for creating new spaces in people's homes and for realising their dreams in an economic and practical way. When we spoke to Philip about why he so enjoys helping individual clients with their projects, he said “It’s all about delight and surprise.” The process includes an initial consultation to review the project, and to make expert suggestions to move the construction forward. A careful survey and analysis of the plot to highlight any potential concerns, follows.
Decisions must be taken on which materials to use, what construction methods to employ, eco considerations, and the orientation of the plot, to name just a few, the list is endless. The amateur developer needs someone they can trust to interpret their ideas to provide something individual that will give them many years of pleasure and satisfaction. This is where the guidance of an experienced, well qualified architect, who is in sympathy with, and enjoys working for individual clients on a one on one basis, can prove invaluable.
The next step is a set of plan drawings, and a three D graphic. Whether a complete new build or a simple extension, clients find this service invaluable when finalising their concept. This is usually where “delight and surprise” come in, years of experience and creative skill will produce a project that works for the client, rather than their contractor. It was at this point in our discussion that Philip cautioned against the use of an unqualified architect, or your local friendly builder preparing your plans, a route which may initially seem cheaper, but may not actually prove cost effective. Proposals submitted by a qualified architect who is aware of local constraints, and the aspects a given planning authority gives weight to, speeds the whole, frequently fraught, process, and will result in a project you can be proud of, rather than a basic “out of the box” design. The knowledge that your project is being managed by a company who will put your concerns first and never forget that this is your home, will make the whole experience a satisfying adventure and ensure a successfully designed project, built on time and to budget.

It is all change at Matrix. The specialist Highway and Transport Consultants to the development sector, established in 2000, have moved their Bristol office and undergone a major rebranding exercise.
The company works directly with landowners and developers, and also for and with other professionals such as, architects, planners, environmental consultants, land agents and solicitors. Although some specialist work is contracted from the public sector, the company works primarily with the private sector, with strong links to residential development. The move sees Matrix ideally positioned to take advantage of the positive indicators in the residential development sector as extra funds released by the government start at last, to take effect. Part of a larger Consulting Group, the company was renamed in January 2013 in order to focus on their core business of highway infrastructure planning, and have moved their Bristol office from Thornbury to the area known as the Almondsbury Business Park.
The company is also being increasingly called upon for commercial development infrastructure planning, including the renewable energy sector.
With offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Bedford, Sheffield and London, Matrix provides infrastructure solutions throughout the UK and Almondsbury was chosen due to its excellent links to the motorway network.
Tim Hayman, Company Director, explained the importance of infrastructure planning to developers. “Transport assessment and design of highway infrastructure to serve a new development, in particular the access arrangements, is an integral part of the information required for most planning applications.”
The move and rebranding were undertaken for strategic reasons, and now place the company in a better position to take full advantage of the upturn in the economy and increased activity in the construction sector.
Matrix is an expert in this field and has an in-depth knowledge of how the planning system operates and the part that the highway and transport issues play. Preparation of a Transport Assessment is a requirement of the National Planning Policy Framework, where developments will have significant transport implications, and should consider the impact of a development on the surrounding transportation network. In many cases this will be related to vehicular traffic. However, the accessibility of a potential development by means other than the car (by bus, rail, by bicycle or on foot) is an important factor in determining the suitability of a particular development site. Tim Hayman tells developers, “Matrix will use our knowledge of the planning system, together with our development experience to provide you with solutions and assist in achieving planning consent for your development.”
The new offices will allow plenty of room for the next stage in their planned expansion, in a more convenient location for their renewed focus on the needs of planners and developers in Bristol and the surrounding area.
Contact Matrix by telephone for an informal discussion on 0845 600 6668, visit the web site

improving homes improving lives
West of England Care & Repair is a not for profit organisation helping to lift the worry of home maintenance from the shoulders of people over 60 and disabled people of all ages, including people with mental health issues or learning difficulties.
“The consultation resulted in a competitive tender of all our services, which I’m pleased to say in the face of strong competition we won; the result was announced in July 2012. During this time we’ve been able to help over 14,000 people and completed over 10,500 jobs. Every day we are providing information, advice, repairs and modifications to help people to live independently and safely in their own homes, and look forward to helping even more people in 2013.” Often the work required is something quite minor, that the majority of tradespeople either won’t undertake or levy a hefty call out fee. West of England Care & Repair’s work is centred around its Handyperson Service which uses 16 local multi-skilled, CRB checked tradesman who will carry out minor repairs at a client’s home – from changing a light bulb to fitting grab rails and shelves or additional security, fitting an outside tap, draft proofing etc. “You can ask for essential work, such as fixing a toilet that won’t flush or repairing a lock, or other basic jobs such as fitting a shelf or hanging pictures,” explained Dave Masters, WECR’s Handyperson Coordinator.
The charity, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011 and whose patron is renowned Bristol architect and Mayor, George Ferguson, provides home maintenance and advice services to homeowners in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, and Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES), enabling them to continue living independently in homes that are warm, safe, secure and adapted to their needs. In the last 18 months West of England Care & Repair has gone through some significant changes, as Sarah Mowl the organisation’s Chair explained. “At the end of 2011, we participated in a three-month consultation process, run by the four Local Authorities in the West of England, about the future of Care and Repair services. We were delighted that over 3,000 clients and local organisations responded – the vast majority in support of our local service. Property Maintenance and security Services:

Because it is funded by Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, and B&NES councils, the Royal British Legion and many others, some clients receive repairs to their homes for free but, wherever a charge is made, the charity works hard to ensure it is very fairly priced, keenly aware that many of its customers are on limited incomes. For clients further reassurance all staff are checked with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), or new Disclosure and Barring Service, and West of England Care and Repair only work with trusted contractors. At all times, not only does West of England Care & Repair work hard to make the jobs affordable, it also prides itself on high standards, recently renewing its Quality Mark from the national regulatory body for core advice and agency handyperson services.
The Yate Home Design Centre will be opening shortly at 70 Celestine Road, Yate to be operated in partnership with the Merlin Housing Society. “We deliver our promises, not just talk about them,” declares director Chris Hodgkins. “Choosing an estate agent is no easy matter. Home owners need to know that they will receive considered and impartial advice and be treated with respect and honesty at all times. “AJ Homes can boast of more than 100 years combined experience in estate agency and residential lettings and there are few situations we are unable to handle and overcome. “Our local knowledge and property marketing expertise mean we are best placed to offer the care that’s required, such as preparing a property for sale and up-to-date advice on market trends to help achieve the best price.” AJ Homes is a thriving business at the heart of the Winterbourne community in Bristol - a position it values highly.
While the residential sales side remains the major income source, the company is investing heavily in technology for the continuing growth of its lettings and property management portfolio.
The estate agent’s is staffed by friendly welcoming professionals who live in the area and are proud of their unrivalled first-hand knowledge of both local trends and the market. When they’re not busy handling the company’s active portfolio of residential sales, lettings and property management, they are actively supporting good causes within the community. AJ Homes has much to be proud about, but its role as a business serving the community in which it’s located is the thing it rates most highly - along with its commitment to trust, honesty and professionalism.
Here is where first-time landlords, or experienced ones, can find varying level of service to suit their every need, with three packages - tenant find, rent collection and full management designed to make the renting of a property as smooth and cost effective as possible. You only have to look at the company’s record to see how AJ Homes’ expertise, local knowledge and overall approach is working. Since its 2007 launch the business has increased its turnover every year and from the two original employees, it now has10 full and part time staff members.

“We are proud that we all live locally,” adds Chris. “As a result we are close to the community and the issues that affect it. Everyone in the team is aware of his or her social responsibilities
“To succeed in a recessionary market sector where others have failed marks not only one of our greatest business challenges but our greatest successes,” acknowledges Chris.
Chris and his fellow director Andrew Maunder are now conducting a property search of their own - for suitable premises into which to expand the business during 2013/14 another sign of its continued success.
“Andrew and I believe the high standard of customer service has been a foundation stone of our continued success and growth.”

Situated in the pretty market towns of South Gloucestershire and Gloucester, Milburys estate agents have been serving the towns and surrounding areas of Thornbury, Chipping Sodbury and Wotton under Edge for 24 years. Milburys will advise on schools, hospitals and other facilities in the area to find not just the right house for each client, but the right home.
Properties needing restoration and renovation present their own particular dilemmas, and depending on the amount of work required can be quite daunting. Paul Higgins from the Chipping Sodbury branch explained that character often comes with quirks, and sometimes it is a question of finding the client who will relish the challenges and differences of such properties.

The majority of their portfolio tends to be in the residential market (sales and lettings) where the benefits of their personal, customer focussed approach really pays dividends. They do also deal with some commercial property, land and equestrian properties. Paul says that there have been great signs of recovery in the housing market; he says “the green shoots are more than visible above the ground now. He acknowledges that some areas of the market may still be a little bit stagnant but predicts movement will gradually spread its organic growth and pervade the whole property market. With increasing levels of confidence, particularly over the last 8 weeks within the market place, he says there has been much more positive activity. Although Milburys focus on their core strengths, matching properties to purchasers, they have connections with a network of professionals who might be required during a property

Classic, Vintage, or Retro? What are you behind the wheel? A classic? Pure vintage? Maybe not so much a veteran as a little bit retro? Or do you just like to get your kit on? No offence - we’re talking about the car you may be lucky enough to drive - or are considering buying. Not everyone wants this year’s model from Toyota/Ford/Vauxhall etc. Enter the world of specialist car ownership and you’re entering a place where your wheels are so much more than a machine for getting from A to B.
•
Retro - a little ambiguous still and spilling over into classic territory. Cars here might come from the 1980s or 1960s. An online definition of the word Retro reads: “A culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion, from the overall post-modern past, that has become functionally or superficially the norm once again”. Many modern cars are designed in a retro fashion to reflect the style of past models while enjoying the performance, safety and build quality expected by present day buyers.
These are vehicles purchased by enthusiasts, lovingly restored to and maintained in the condition they were when they were first driven off the production line.
According to the Federation of British Historical Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC), enthusiasts and traders contribute to an industry that is worth £4bn a year to the UK economy. That’s a lot of engine parts and historic vehicles - 850,000 to be exact, says the FBHVC
Some are historic, some are world famous, many form part of treasured collections - and some are just built from scratch by a knowledgeable individual to be something just that little bit different.
There’s plenty of kit cars out there too, it being an established and enthusiastically supported sector with a wealth of small companies designing and selling models for real niche markets.
So let’s get the definitions sorted.
You won’t get a better glimpse of the current scene than the National Kit Car Show, taking place at Stonleigh Park, Warwickshire.
•
Veteran - a car pre-dating and including December 1918.
•
Vintage - a car made between 1919 and 1930. Although the term is often ascribed to those made before the Second World War.
•
Classic - generally any car no longer in production but still popular. So it could be cars from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
•
Modern Classics - An emerging category covering iconic cars from some of the classic marques, such as: Ferrari Enzo; Jaguar XK8R; Aston Martin DB7 and DB9.
•
Kit - cars built by their buyers.
Billed as the biggest of its kind - in the world - if features displays of more than 4,000 cars and hundreds of stands selling everything a car builder needs, from nuts and bolts to a complete performance engine. Many visitors will be happy to just browse, look and dream - but there will be those actually putting a model together. Building a kit car, however, is not for the faint hearted. It can take hundreds or even thousands of hours of time and, yes, pounds, plus of course, required work space and tools, but any owner will tell you the end result is worth it.
Even those with the most basic understanding of mechanics and engineering can build a kit car thanks to the help of fellow enthusiasts and wealth of information which are available out there. The future is bright for kit cars - what about the classic car market? It can certainly be a volatile place. We may be in the middle of a global financial crisis, but it didn’t stop the original 1960s Batmobile going for $4.2million in January or a Ferrari 250 GTO originally built for Sir Stirling Moss selling for $35million last year, a decade after it had been bought for a mere $8.5m. Not every classic will fetch such astonishing sums but there’s no doubt that choosing the right model can reap rewards; even if it’s just a humble Citroen 2CV. A few years back you couldn’t necessarily give them away - now you’d be lucky to find one with a less than £3,000 price tag. In France models restored by a British company are going for up to £11,000. There’s more good news from the Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) which reported that according to its index of classic cars, valuations shot up by 19% in the first nine months of 2012 and by more than 25% in the last year. Vintage motors are also revving up a storm with one dealer claiming to have sold 30 cars worth more than £40m since April 2012 while a sale in Battersea last October realised more than £14m in one evening. Production may have long ceased on many models and makes - but the passion and enthusiasm that still exists for them ensures that they’ve got a long way to go until the end of the road.

The Experts in Exhausts Bristol based Infinity Exhausts are dedicated to providing the highest quality exhaust systems and service. Bespoke stainless steel exhausts aren’t all about 'noise and fancy tailpipes', Infinity Exhausts are well known for fabricating standard replacement systems that are far more durable, and often less expensive than the original part, and have a lifetime guarantee. So once you have an Infinity stainless exhaust system on your vehicle you need never worry about having to replace the exhaust again as it comes with a lifetime guarantee to the vehicle. Not content with already being able to supply exhausts to a wide range of vehicles last September (2012) they installed a specialist new ramp to cater for larger vehicles. The ramp can handle an impressive 3.5 tonne lift and is ideal for work on transport such as camper vans, long wheel based vehicles and flatbeds. Forget the constraints of “off the shelf” systems, Infinity Exhausts custom build bespoke systems in-house to suit the individual vehicle using only the best quality T304 Grade Stainless Steel. Their exhaust systems are of a freeflow design aimed at increasing brake horse power, torque and fuel consumption - using the correct bore size will maximise these gains.
Martyn says: “If you need any exhaust or welding work on larger vehicles, then please do get in touch as we have a lot of expert knowledge in this area and would be happy to help.” Other than exhaust systems for motor vehicles the company offers other services, such as exhausts for other forms of transport such as boats. Take on teambuilding challenge to raise funds for local air ambulance charity
Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) is looking for individuals to raise funds for its cause while taking part in a team building activity at the same time. The initiative, called Team 1200, is encouraging staff from local businesses to raise £1,200 by taking part in a challenge or fundraising activity alongside their colleagues. The charity is the only provider of an air ambulance service for the 2.1m people of Bristol, Bath and the surrounding counties, plus Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire. The charity does not receive Government or National Lottery funding to pay for the helicopter, and they rely on donations and the support of the people of the region to keep their air ambulance flying. Raising £1,200 would cover the cost of two missions undertaken by the charity’s helicopter, potentially saving two lives, and it is also the average cost of a week’s worth of fuel that would enable the helicopter to respond to approximately 20 callouts. John Christensen, Chief Executive of GWAAC said: “Taking part in a charity event can be rewarding, fun and an excellent teambuilding opportunity. Additionally, participation in our Team 1200 challenge would see your company automatically entered into a draw where there are a range of fantastic prizes to be won.” “I would encourage local businesses who are considering taking part in a teambuilding activity, or who are interested in supporting a charity, to sign up to Team 1200 and support our cause as you never know when you might require the help of our service.” The charity’s fundraising team will be on hand to assist businesses with their fundraising endeavours, and a pack containing fundraising ideas and GWAAC branded materials will be provided. To find out more about Team 1200 and to take part, please contact Tianna Cowan by emailing tianna@gwaac.com or call 0117 9699344.

“Many owners who keep their boats in busy marinas bring their yachts to Weir Quay for servicing, repairs and major refits and we encourage them with our fantastic haul-out and re-launch service for just £9 per foot.”
A life on the ocean wave is so much better when you’ve got somewhere wonderful sail to home to - and many find that at Devon’s Weir Quay Boatyard. When it’s time to moor up, sailing folk chart a fast course for this traditional bustling boatyard just six miles upstream from Plymouth Sound, on the River Tamar and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. “We have done a few crossings and a circumnavigation of the UK but we always feel relieved when we go under the Tamar Bridge in Plymouth and head for our regular mooring at Weir Quay,” is the feeling of just one of their happy customers. Of course, Weir Quay is not just about providing calm waters for intrepid sailors, it has all hands on deck to keep their vessels shipshape too, be they motor or sailing yachts up to 50 ft or 20 tons. Its marine craftsmen – shipwrights and engineers – provide a complete service, including winter lay-up, maintenance, repairs and refit, ships’ joinery, plumbing, engine service and installation. In addition, there’s access to riggers, canvas makers, stainless fabricators, upholsters, paint sprayers and grit blasters. “There isn’t a job too small or too big to take on,” promises Weir Quay’s ‘captain’, Mike Hooton. He and wife Lisa bought the boatyard in 1999 when it was in the doldrums and soon put it back on the crest of a wave, creating a thriving rural enterprise employing more than 10 professionals and marine tradesmen. “The aim was to create the smartest small boatyard in the country while retaining the values and atmosphere of the traditional friendly yard,” he says. Its reputation suggests that they have achieved that with an exemplary level of marine expertise, personal customer service and attention to detail. In 2010 a new, luxury lobby and showerblock were built, providing free coffee and wi-fi to all the moorings. “We aim to offer all the facilities of a top-class marina at a fraction of the cost and we provide many more services, a better standard of care and excellent security for the boats,” says Mike.
It’s not all been plain sailing; remaining competitive with the Plymouth marinas is one of the biggest business challenges. “Nowadays you have to work hard to be the best and to attract and retain customers,” says Mike. “It isn’t enough to be in a fabulous place, you have to offer a great service.”
“We can only accommodate 100 boats but we look after them completely all year, whether on the water or on the yard. We provide traditional skills and services and try to make Weir Quay as comfortable, attractive and efficient as possible. It’s what people expect – and so they should.”

The SWINDON
caravan
CENTRE
There is a lot of excitement at Swindon Caravans, the business which was founded by Guy Collister in 1988, as they reach their silver jubilee. To celebrate this milestone the company are mounting a superb prize draw to run in July for a brand new Bailey Pagasus GT 65 caravan worth £18,000. The free draw is open to all their customers at any of their three branches, and will be drawn on 27th July. Further information can be found at www.swindoncaravans.com. Based in Greatfield, Swindon Caravans is the largest dealer in Wiltshire, specialising in new and used touring caravans for sale, and has expanded to establish branches in Oxford (2006) and Reading (2009). The company is still under the leadership of Guy Collister now 65.
He started out by using his knowledge to buy and sell used caravans through a dealership in Gloucester with whom he split the profits. As the business grew he thought: ‘This is silly – why am I splitting the profits?’” The Greatfield site was secured shortly afterwards and the business has never looked back. The three locations sell about 1,200 caravans a year between them and employ about 60 people.
For further information about the prize, the vast range of caravans currently available and their terrific summer offers, visit the web site,

or ring for a chat on 01793 772096.
The designs and fittings of caravans have changed and developed over the years from those many of us remember as children, with the rain drumming on the roof while we played board games, and long sunny days near the coast. Caravanning still has the same basic appeal for devotees, but as Guy Collister says: “We like to caravan now in comfort, and the modern caravan now has so many gadgets in it that it’s very comfortable.”
Enjoy the Great Outdoors.
For many people caravan holidays are still the ones they remember as the best. “It’s still the way my kids remember being kids – having a caravan and going to France. They loved it, we loved it and those are the holidays that we all loved the best.” One of those children was Tom Collister, 33, the company’s marketing manager. He is still a caravan fan. He said: “It’s the freedom, the freedom of being able to explore the great outdoors.” The company sells new touring caravans from leading manufacturers Swift, Bailey and Lunar as well as used caravans, awnings and accessories. There is also a workshop for servicing, warranty and repair; there is also a caravan hire service available.
Swindon Caravans are celebrating their 25th Anniversary. Come and see the UK’s favourite caravan brands.
Caravans for sale range from basic used examples at a few hundred or a few thousand pounds right up to luxurious six-berth models with price tags of about £25,000. Guy explained how he came to start the business, having worked part time for a caravan manufacturer in the 1980s.

The Joys of the
Open Road Ah, the open road. In straightened times when ‘staycations’ are all the rage, there couldn’t be a more perfect way to discover the beautiful and varied landscape that makes up the British Isles. And what could be better than having all your home comforts around you while on the move and the ability to explore somewhere new at the drop of a hat? A holiday on wheels, whether in a caravan or motorhome, offers all of these things and is perfect for everyone, no matter how old or young they are. Parents can rediscover the delights of outdoor adventures with their children. This kind of holiday - reminiscent of a bygone era can provide perfect opportunities for rock pooling and den building, along with family expeditions on bikes or on foot, with picnic treats at the ready.
country’s biggest international attractions and all boast a wealth of camping sites just waiting for visitors to pitch up. Birmingham has Shakespeare Country right on its doorstep while the beauties of the Lake District are only a few hours’ drive further north. Bristol, is of course, right at the gateway to the South West - Devon and Cornwall while Bath and ‘Jane Austen’ country are next door and Wales just a short trip over the Severn. According to the Caravan Club, Europe’s premier touring organisation representing the interests of more than a million caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tent owners, 26% of UK holiday nights are spent in a caravan or motorhome while the industry is worth around £6 billion annually to the UK economy and employs about 115,000 people.
Festival goers have found that having a part share in a caravan or camper van offers more luxurious accommodation, while empty nesters and early (or later) retired folk can use a touring holiday as the perfect getaway no matter what the season.
Its members alone spend more than £400 million off-site in local tourism
Bristol and Birmingham regions couldn’t be better placed to welcome all these travellers and their homes on wheels.
Once you have been bitten by the caravan bug, the only way is forward, with every weekend a potential holiday.
Apart from the cities themselves being packed with fascinating tourist destinations, both are practically within touching distance, never mind travelling distance, of some of the

economies and, in total, UK caravanners contribute almost £1.5 billion a year to local economies and in VAT and motoring taxes.
From city sites in Edinburgh’s cultural climes to Invercauld, in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park - yes, what’s stopping you from picking up your holiday gear and motoring on up to Scotland? The bottom line is that the choice of destination is yours, as by boarding your caravan or motorhome, you’re opening up a whole holiday-making world of flexibility and sustainability. Not even the British weather can necessarily get the best of you. If it’s refusing to play ball, you can just up sticks and go where it’s better behaved. Furthermore, banish all thoughts of pitching up to a cold and muddy field and huddling to cook over a single gas stove. If you’ve not been inside a caravan for a few years, you’ll be glad to know things have changed, almost beyond recognition. Today it’s less Carry on Camping and more Carry on Glamping. Modern caravans have all mod cons and as many home comforts as you desire, including state-of-the-art kitchen facilities, luxury showers and toilets en suite, fixed beds, heating/air con, and in-house entertainment. There’s no doubt that in recession-hit Britain, the domestic market for camping and caravanning is booming but it’s not just because we Brits are tightening our belts and opting for budget domestic holidays. The desire for shared experiences, a low carbon footprint and freedom and flexibility are also key factors. After all, what could be better than gathering up your pet/children, favourite duvet, deckchairs - even your drum kit and the proverbial kitchen sink - chucking them all into your caravan or motorhome and heading off into the wild blue yonder? “We’re creating a community of beer and cider enthusiasts by holding in-shop ‘tutored tasting’ or ‘beer and food matching’ evenings and ‘meet the brewer/cider producer’ events,” says Leigh.
It’s taken off to such a degree that, within three short years, Favourite Beers has found itself the toast of award ceremonies everywhere. Earlier this year the Cheltenham shop took the ‘Independent Cider Retailer of the Year’ 2013 award, continuing a trend that began within 18 months of its 2010 opening when it clinched the prestigious ‘Independent Beer Retailer of the Year’ title at the industry ‘Oscars‘ - the Drinks Retailing Awards. This year the business was also a finalist in the ‘Green/Ethical Retailer of the Year’ category, just losing out to Marks & Spencer. Now working on a host of new ideas for the coming year, everything at Favourite Beers is, well, fermenting quite nicely. For Leigh, his new career really is top of the hops. “I was introduced to real ale in the 1970s by my late father-in-law who used to take great pleasure in introducing me to the few then available.” he says. “Over the years, through organising a local beer festival, I’ve got to know many people involved in the beer industry and what struck me was the absolute passion that they all had for their craft. I was particularly impressed how everyone helped each other out. “After 33 years I realised that my IT based job just wasn’t exciting me anymore and having always wished that someone would open a shop like ours in this part of the country, I decided that this was my chance to get involved in this great industry.” And what a shop. The enticing frontage in Hewlett Road, featuring regularly changed, themed, window

"More and more of these events are available to social groups or corporate clients. We can cater for parties of between 12 and 35 people at the shop or we can visit client sites.” With a burgeoning social media presence and an expanding email list combined with a busy website (online ordering coming soon), there are plenty of reasons to raise a glass to the future of Favourite Beers.

They now employ 7 staff, (8, if you include Ruby, the Brewery Dog, named after one of their ales, Ruby Porter). Their daughter, Leanne, has taken over most of the telesales and accountancy, while, Mike, their sales representative (and brother-in-law!) is now out on the road in a GWB Smart Car, bringing in more customers from near and far.
The Rising Sun at Frampton Cotterell has been run by The Stone family Since 1982, it is now The Brewery Tap for The Great Western Brewery. As the pub developed into a renowned haven for Real Ale drinkers, Kevin and Sandra’s interest grew and developed to the point where they decided to brew their own Real Ale, so in January 2007 the Great Western Brewing Company Ltd was established. Sandra remembers, “When we started up the brewery we had no previous experience in the brewing industry apart from owning our own pub. Ashley, our son and now Head Brewer, went up to Wadworth at Devizes for a short course in Brewing.” Finding Brewery premises were the obvious next step, and in April 2007 Kevin and Sandra purchased The Old Bakery in the village of Hambrook, near Bristol. The property, a historic bake house, dates back to the 1700’s with its own resident ghost!! Restoration work commenced in June 2007 and the property has been transformed into a showpiece brewery with many of its original features restored.
Their customer base has grown from 10 to over 500 and is still rising. The brewery shop at the front of the brewery supplying real ale direct to the public, in quantities ranging from 2 litres to 40 litres for customers to take away for home consumption, has been a very successful addition to the business.
Sandra explained, “A friend, Brian Rides, who helped set up Wickwar Brewery, advised us on the equipment we would need and ingredients to make the recipe to produce our first ale. The appropriately named, Maiden Voyage was their first brew. It took a good 18 months to achieve a balance of flavours they were happy with; Maiden Voyage was closely followed by Classic Gold, a recipe that has barely changed. The brewery started with just Kevin, Sandra, Ashley and Bob the brewery assistant and drayman. Through telesales made by Sandra, and brewing by Kevin and Ashley, their production grew. From brewing once a week, producing 40 9 gallon barrels, they have increased to brewing 4-5 times a week, producing 200 9 gallon barrels per week.
They have an exceptional range of seasonal ales, with each new brew enthusiastically sampled, and commented upon, by their regulars at The Rising Sun. Sandra and Kevin are very proud of their brewery and say “We have worked hard to produce a top quality product that we are confident with, and believe that we have gained our “customers’ confidence”.

Rockfish believe the fish from the south coast is some of the best in the world and Mitch has a close relationship with the fishermen to ensure they always receive the best quality.
The Rockfish Grill is a restaurant specialising in seafood grilled over charcoal.
The restaurant was opened in 2009 by Mitch Tonks, the UK’s leading fishmonger and seafood restaurateur as part of the Rockfish family of seafood restaurants. They specialise in seafood and simple grilled meat dishes as well as house specialities. Dishes include a starter of Dartmouth crab, dressed to order, a mixed grill of seafood, a rib of prime angus beef or chicken livers wrapped in sage and grilled over charcoal burning fires. Charcoal grilling adds a very special flavour, reminiscent of fish cooked on the beach, the Mediterranean or a really good barbecue.
You can always be sure of the best quality fish from a sustainable source at Rockfish. The Rockfish story and passion starts way before the fish reaches the grill and they work tirelessly with their fishermen and merchants to ensure that they are only ever buying the best in responsibly caught fish. Joe Cook, the general manager, strongly recommends their mixed seafood grill. “Grilling fish over charcoal is what the Rockfish Grill is all about, so what better way to introduce yourself to it than to have 5 or 6 different species to sample on one plate, sat in the best dining room in Bristol!” Try some of the more unusual varieties on offer at Rockfish Grill, you know it will be fresh, you know it will be beautifully prepared and you know that it will have been sustainably sourced. Whilst you have been reading this there will be a boat somewhere catching tomorrow's fish for the RockFish Grill.

They’ve added prime cuts of meat to compliment the fish, and also allow you to preorder fish to collect and cook at home, ordered direct from Brixham fish market.
FRESH &TASTY
The restaurant is relaxed and the service informal, this is a place to sit and enjoy the freshest seafood and meat simply prepared and cooked to your liking. The menus change daily to reflect what is in season and available on the market that morning. By focussing on the restaurant they hope to spread the word about eating great British fish and meat. Top quality and sustainability are big things for Rockfish, the two go hand in hand when they are buying their prime cuts of meat and their fish, which comes from local fishermen, who lead the way in fishing sustainably and catch over 30 species in our local waters.

The company’s three distinctive red buses are now an established part of the scene, just the ticket for an in-depth exploration of the area, accompanied by live commentary without a headphone in sight - from City Sightseeing’s guides; all local people. Barely having time to draw breath over owner Warwick Hulme’s win in the recent Bristol Tourism and Hospitality Awards, where he collected the Customer Service in an Attraction prize, the team is now celebrating their Certificate of Excellence award from Trip Advisor as their customer reviews have positioned them in the top 10% of Trip Advisor businesses worldwide. ‘It’s an exciting stage of development in the company as we’re now expanding far beyond our standard City Sightseeing timetabled service,” says Warwick. “We’re responding to increasing numbers of tourists visiting Bristol throughout the year and to an increased appetite from schools and conferences, among others, for hiring their own buses for trips and special events.’ The company was one of the founding franchises in the City Sightseeing brand; being the 14th to join what is now nearly a 100-strong worldwide organisation. “It’s a fine balance between the power of the brand and being a small, local company but we’re proud of our local roots and keen to stay focused upon them,” says Warwick. City Sightseeing’s hop on, hop off service is a fantastic way for locals and visitors to explore what Bristol has to offer and passengers also receive discounts at many other city attractions and eateries. The company have just released their exciting brand new Gromit tours that run through-out ‘Gromit Unleashed’. Other public trips include ‘Urban Bristol – street art by bus’ tour and the popular ‘Story Bus’; the latest in its series of special journeys that run throughout the year.

The Tom Cobley Tavern Young or old, single or couple, two legs or four - all are welcome at Spreyton’s Tom Cobley Tavern. Family friendly, dog friendly, all-round people friendly, this popular hostelry, the original 1802 starting out point for the real Tom Cobley whose trip to the fair was immortalised in song, is at the heart of village life.
Mine hosts Roger and Carol Cudlip lead a team which prides itself on the warm welcome to all who visit, be it to sup some of the fine real ales, perries and ciders, tuck in to traditional home-cooked food from an extensive menu or stay in one of the six comfortable bed and breakfast rooms.
Not only do customers drink well - they eat well. Food is served daily; a separate lunchtime and evening menu comprising a wide selection of traditional homemade dishes and which incorporates a good choice of vegetarian and vegan options and gluten-free alternatives, all featuring local produce where possible. Party and coach bookings are welcomed, but you don’t have to visit the Tom Cobley to enjoy its food as it also caters for outside catering functions and bars, from weddings and parties, to christenings and funerals.
“We pride ourselves on tailoring our catering and services to an event, trying to make the day as memorable as possible,” says Roger. “For smaller occasions we are happy to host an event but are more than willing to travel to provide bars and outside catering in Devon and beyond.” Of course, not only do people like to visit the Tom Cobley, they like to stay and its bed and breakfast rooms, complete with TV and DVD player, radio alarm clock with CD player, hair dryer, towels, tea and coffee-making facilities and toiletries provide comfortable homes-from-homes for guests be they business people, couples, groups or families.
They arrived at the Tom Cobley in 2002 and in that time have led the pub’s development into the award-winning success it is today. Its long list of CAMRA and Good Beer Guide titles was topped most recently by clinching, at the end of last year, the Devon Life Best Community Pub 2012 title and CAMRA’s Regional Pub of the Year - for the third time, a success which leaves it vying for the national award.

The Beirut Bistro is a Torquay jewel and features Traditional, Mediterranean, and Lebanese dishes. One of the most popular choices, for an authentic taste of the Middle East, is the Beirut’s Lebanese Mezza, a delicious variety of Halal Lebanese dishes served Buffet Style at your table, £23.99 per serving. Although the minimum is 2 servings, this is great fun for a group or family, with every one picking and choosing amongst the dishes.
RICHWOOD A warm welcome awaits guests who discover the Richwood Hotel and Beirut Bistro in Torquay, situated just 15 minutes walk from the seafront and the town centre. The Richwood is a small, privately owned, licenced hotel run by Veronica Pickles and Saida Hammoud, who after a career in nursing have put all their considerable energies into breathing fresh life into the Victorian building since taking over in 2011. At that time the hotel needed partially refurbishing and updating; now the cosy building gleams with freshly painted murals on a Lebanese theme, the double glazing is completed, and free Wi Fi is available throughout the hotel.
Victoria and Saida are taking real pleasure in turning the Richwood into a hotel which provides a warm welcome to all, couples, families or single travellers. They happily accept pets, in two guestrooms rooms on the lower ground floor, with access to outside space. BOOK NOW, three night residential Lebanese cookery courses for Oct/Nov 2013; Feb-April 2014. The 13 guestrooms are all en suite and have tea and coffee making facilities and new flat screen TVs with DVD player. The bar, presided over by the cheerful and hospitable resident barman Kevin, has been redesigned and the dining area converted into the eclectic Beirut Bistro. Outside the grounds are well maintained and the seasonally heated swimming pool and hot tub have been upgraded. Veronica told us that it has been a steep learning curve, dealing with various tradesmen and re-establishing the hotel’s reputation - being just two of the obstacles they have had to overcome. The end result has been a charming, traditional Bed and Breakfast hotel, which offers guests the choice of either a light breakfast or full English, freshly cooked when ordered the night before. Many visitors these days prefer a lighter start to the day, whereas others relish a traditional cooked breakfast. Veronica and Saida are very proud of their food; they shop daily for fresh local produce for the wide ranging menu in the Beirut Bistro. They welcome non-residents, but do require diners to pre order by 2pm on the day to give them the opportunity to buy the freshest possible ingredients. The menu can be found on their main webpage.

The Three Elms Inn may have been named Rural Pub of the Year by the West Dorset branch of CAMRA - but people are not only here for the beer. First class food, first-class ales - and first class stamps are all on the menu, along with a few household provisions as well. That’s because since Sue and John Barker arrived at the hostelry, they have transformed it into a thriving, multi-faceted concern, right at the heart of the community.
Now the couple are waiting to hear if they have been chosen to go through to the final of the Wessex CAMRA Regional Pub of the Year, which could, in turn, take them all the way through to the national competition. There couldn’t be a better indicator that they are successfully tackling what Sue says has been their biggest challenge so far, to turn the pub around. “We have been here two years now and the business is slowly growing,” she smiles. “Even in this economic climate with many pubs closing.”
They bought it in March 2011, and just two months later, set up a village shop and post office - making the Three Elms the UK’s first pub to have a Post Office counter inside.
Open seven days a week - with the post office from 11am-11pm (noon-10.30am Sundays), there’s always a warm welcome at the Three Elms. The menu boasts only quality West Country meat from an award-winning butcher’s and locally sourced fresh vegetables and the specials board changes every week.
They haven’t finished - with plans for an IT centre, the couple hope customers will soon be able to post on line as well as letters. For lucky North Wooton people, the Three Elms brings a whole new dimension to just popping out to buy a stamp.
The Sunday carvery is always the best place to be at the weekend and the Barkers go all out to ensure the wide choice of fare accommodates every dietary need. Alternatively, if you want to enjoy their great food in your own home, they provide a takeaway service.
Customers can start by purchasing a loaf or pint of milk, stock up on stamps before and tuck into some good old fashioned pub grub and slaking their thirst with some quality beer.
But many love to drop in and stay at the Three Elms, if anything just to sample its latest guest ales, the selection of which changes weekly. Whether stocking up on provisions, enjoying its hospitality or posting a letter, this is a pub that’s really worth writing home about.
Although it wasn’t just the fine ale which led to its CAMRA title which the Barkers rate as one of their biggest business successes to date. The award scheme sees pubs selected by CAMRA’s local branch members whose votes are also based on customer service, value for money, decor, customer mix and atmosphere.

MTLS Ventures, a new SME investment fund has also invested in the Parsons, taking a significant minority stake as part of a £1.7m fundraising for expansion. This transaction represents the second deal from the fund MTLS Ventures, following on from their initial investment into i2m an advanced manufacturing business.
Parsons Bakery Has The Recipe For Growth South West based family bakery business, Parsons, is set to more than double its number of stores over the next three years to create more than 200 full and part-time jobs, following a new seven-figure finance agreement with Santander Corporate & Commercial banking. Parsons, established more than 100 years ago and currently managed by the fourth generation of the Parsons family, operates from one central bakery in Bristol, where it bakes handmade breads, cakes and pastries, and ships them out every day to 34 stores located around Bristol, the South West and South Wales. The new financing agreement with Santander will enable Parsons to open around 12 new shops per year for the next three years, bringing the number of stores from 34 to 70 by the end of 2015. At least 90 full time jobs will be created during this expansion period, and even more part time positions, both at the new shops and in the central Bristol bakery. Nick Parsons, Managing Director of Parsons Bakery, said: “Santander really took the time to understand our business and delivered an innovative funding solution which will help us achieve our goals of business growth, brand development and job creation. The whole team at Santander showed real enthusiasm for what we want to achieve and communicated clearly with us throughout the process – it was a refreshing way to work with a Bank.” Simon Whyatt, Relationship Director for Santander Corporate & Commercial, said: “Parsons Bakery is an excellent example of a strong, well managed local business with the potential to significantly grow. They offer a truly fantastic range of products, and have developed a real brand heritage in the Bristol and South West area. We are delighted to be able to help them with this latest funding and help them create a significant number of jobs in the region. I am looking forward to building our relationship with Parsons in the months and years to come.”
W e s t e r n
Matt Eves, of MTLS Ventures, said: "We are delighted to have provided expansion capital to Parsons to enable the management team to grow the business to 70 sites. MTLS has been set up to provide successful businesses with the additional risk capital that is just out of the comfort zones of typical bank funding and we are delighted to be working with Nick and Chris to be assisting in growing the business." Chartered accountant and advisory firm Baker Tilly advised Parsons on the deal.

THE OLD
The only thing we overlook is the harbour Looe’s Old Bridge House was already a successful, thriving place when Liz and Colin Clements took it over 10 years ago. But they’ve turned it into pure gold. A proud holder of the prestigious Visit England Gold Award, from membership year 2010 to 2013. The Old Bridge House is among a very exclusive top 4% to gain four star guest accommodation rating. “Taking The Old Bridge House from a no grading to its present status was one of our biggest challenges but our ability to keep the gold accolade is our biggest success,” says Colin. “When we took over our objective was to make it the very best guest house possible and now, almost in the style of a ‘boutique hotel’, we’re very proud to be able to directly compete with the larger, more corporate hotels in Looe. “Our standards are very high. We strive constantly to improve and to provide a more intimate and personal approach than can be found in most establishments.” The Old Bridge House, enjoying stunning views of Looe Harbour, is the perfect place from where to base a romantic weekend break, a family stay or a weekend getaway. Here you can wake up to the sight and sound of the sea and linger over a delicious Continental or full English breakfast. And not just any Continental or full English - breakfasts here are legendary enough to be Visit England award-winning. The title recognises hotels and B&Bs which have gone the extra mile to ensure the breakfast will exceed expectations and a quick glance at The Old Bridge House’s offering is ample evidence of that. Cereals and fresh fruit, organic porridge (with cream as an option) and toasted freshly baked local bread are just for starters. Locally sourced butchers sausage and bacon, grilled tomato, hog’s pudding, mushrooms and baked beans, locally produced free range eggs cooked to guests’ individual preference and naturally smoked haddock from the quay-side fishmonger’s are choices to follow. “We believe in starting the day well, and what better way than with a full, wholesome Cornish breakfast,” smiles Colin. With options including local smoked kippers, pancakes and omlettes alongside gluten-free and vegetarian alternatives and lighter breakfasts, The Old Bridge House guests are always fully charged up for a day exploring the area. They will have already had a great night’s sleep. The guest house’s tastefully furnished en suite rooms boast the facilities one would expect in a four star hotel, such as: Luxury complimentary toiletries, TV with integral DVD and FreeView, dressing gowns upon request, complimentary beverage tray, ironing equipment upon request, free Wifi throughout, free Skype to Skype and an electronic safe. “We make it our business to ensure guests have a comfortable and relaxing stay and our ability to respond to their needs makes a visit here a unique and pleasurable experience,” says Colin.

Josh Geary literally swung into action when he launched his business in his native Cornwall, inspired by his experience working in bars, restaurants and hotels around the world.
Since it opened in May 2012, the restaurant, has become a hit with visitors and residents alike who love not only its Spanish and Italian influenced food with extensive use of great Cornish produce, but also the regular live music. Here is where Josh rates one of his biggest business successes. “Our opening summer season saw the Zute House Jazz Quartet on stage four nights a week with their own brand of traditional and contemporary jazz,” he explains. “It featured graduates from the New Zealand School of Music and we look forward to continuing that link and hope to welcome another resident band soon.” The band was just one of the restaurant’s successes which, when Josh first started out, seemed to have the odds stacked against it. “With no business history, trade references or collateral all I had to present to potential investors was a business plan, a small amount of capital and a whole heap of enthusiasm,” he grins.
The resulting Zute Lounge Bar & Kitchen, in the heart of Looe, Cornwall is a tapas and gourmet pizza restaurant, with lounge décor, and low lighting accompanied by sounds of the Jazz and Swing eras, giving customers the feeling that they’ve just stepped back into a 1920s jazz bar.
However, he secured a business loan with the aid of the Government’s Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme and, having transformed a former Mexican restaurant in Buller Street, into Zute Lounge, Bar & Kitchen he was soon joined by friends, Alex Pollard and Cadan Hitchens, in management roles. Combined with Josh’s experience and passion for the hospitality industry, the trio is proving an unstoppable force. With tapas dishes incorporating fresh seafood from local ports and meat from surrounding farms, Josh and his team pride themselves on the food’s freshness and quality as well as the exciting and innovative cocktail menu.

Golant, Fowey, Cornwall
When Mary Tozer arrived at Cornwall’s Cormorant Hotel and Restaurant she faced the delicate challenge of making major changes to boost the 50 year-old establishment’s profile, without alienating long-standing returning guests. But read the reviews on the website and you can see she’s done a grand job. Among the plaudits are those from customers of 12 years who have charted the changes and describe this three-star small hotel on banks of the Fowey river as ‘brilliant’, while another, making a return stay after lengthy gap, hails the transformation as “delightful”, adding: “It is heartening to know that the hotel is in good hands.” “I took over six years ago and it was a big challenge as although The Cormorant is in a beautiful setting it is a remote location and required major marketing,” says Mary. “There was also the business of marrying the expectations of those newer, online-booked guests with long-standing returning ones who would not necessarily appreciate major change. Decor, atmosphere and food offerings all needed a careful pitch to accommodate the changing customer base.” Mary set about increasing the number of bedrooms from 11 to 14, enlarging the restaurant and achieved a complete rebuild of the previously unusable indoor Pool into a great facility with Jacuzzi hot tub. “We have been successful in creating reasonably modern ambience and facilities whilst retaining the charm of this remote and beautiful site,” she says. “Those guests who have returned over many years do appreciate the changes and yet say that the atmosphere still feels the same as it ever did.” With a 50% increase in turnover, The Cormorant has never looked back and is, actually, very much looking forward, with the arrival of a brilliant new head chef, Dane Watkins, destined to make the food offering from the two-rosetted restaurant even better. Mary is also considering enlarging some of the guest rooms, and outdoor landscaping has been taking place. Quality comfortable beds, quality linen, quality local food and an award-winning wine list are just some of the hallmarks of this hotel whose staff have made an art form out of providing a high level of detailed personal service. “We’re very proud of our skill in providing a professional service at just the right level of friendliness, one that allows guests to appreciate its quality whilst feeling completely at home,” says Hotel Manager Russell Kerr. They’re also very proud of the revitalised pool and hot spa tub. Positioned at tree-top level with commanding views of the River Fowey, the pool waters are salinated and large enough for an energetic swim. Whether you want to relax and drink in the breath-taking views, burn a few calories in the pool, dine in style in the restaurant or enjoy an intimate wedding celebration to remember, The Cormorant has it all.
