became frustrated with the then market’s working practices, wanted to form a company with more forward-thinking views, provide a more flexible service and which would become a well renowned good name.
The Solihull based company is sponsoring the Aarca 10-Year Anniversary Handicap at Warwick Races, on July 1st, and the team won’t only be cheering the winner home, they’ll be toasting the success of the business which has become a prominent brand representing quality, professionalism, honesty and reliability in the recruitment sector.
“I believe we have got there,” he adds. “We’ve become one of the key brands in sales recruitment in the UK, successfully dealing with very prestigious clients both here and across international market places.”
It is these aspects, plus much more, that have helped to ensure Aarca has developed over the decade into a respected recruitment brand that is always first past the post. It was founded by Managing Director John-Paul Shields who, having worked in the recruitment sector for many years,
“We’ve achieved this by having an honest approach and developing special knowledge within particular market sectors; going the extra mile that the standard recruitment agency doesn’t.” Being based in the Midlands sees Aarca ideally placed to handle enquiries from across the UK and abroad, from a diverse range of sectors, including engineering, agriculture, construction, FMCG, travel, leisure and events, technical and scientific.

With continued emphasis always on attention to detail, the company believes in developing long-term relationships with its clients and key to this is the provision of highly-skilled one-toone dedicated consultants, each drawing on their detailed expertise of a specific industry sector. “For instance, if an FMCG, Agriculture or Engineering client contacts us, we have a dedicated consultant from each sector

All our consultants have access to the latest database systems and online recruitment methodology. We really do cover all bases for our customers.” With absolute priority given to staff training, clients can be satisfied that not only are the best candidates sourced for a vacancy, they’re being selected by skilled people who really know about the recruitment process. “People who,” says John-Paul” “are a key part of the company’s growth and success.” “To get to 10 years is a big achievement - especially as times have been very testing and tough in the last two or three years with the recession,” he says. “We’ve seen a lot of competitors go out of business and to still be here, still be successful, still be profitable and still have a good name at this time is, I think, a great achievement!”

EVEN Disney recognises real magic when it sees it. Working with the Birmingham creative agency Fluid Design proved such a spellbinding experience for the global entertainment giant, no stranger to creating a bit of magic itself, that it well and truly fell under its spell. Says Neena Williams, the Senior Manager, European PR for Disney Interactive: “Disney has worked with a number of design agencies but since working with Fluid over the last year, we have no intentions of changing; its work is second to none and its creative a real hit with our team, not just in Europe but also on a worldwide basis. It’s just one example of the plaudits which flow in from some of the world’s biggest names for this company which, specialising in the entertainment sector, enjoys a global reputation as a leading design agency offering a fully comprehensive service.
The Arts Council, BBC, Chrysalis Music, ITV, Microsoft X-Box, MTV, Red Bull, Sony Music, Sony PlayStation, Warner Brothers and The Hyatt Group are just some of those featured on its extensive client list, which ranges from global brands to local arts organisations. Launched in 1995 by Creative Director James Glover and Operations Director Neil Roddis, Fluid first established its design and branding credentials within the music industry but, as it grew, it continued the entertainment theme. “Fluid is not only our name, but also our branding philosophy, says James Glover. “We have no house style and our studio represents a rich pool of outstanding talent from a wide range of artistic disciplines. “At every stage of the creative process we guarantee flexible, comprehensive design solutions that bear testament to the breath of our experience and versatility of style. “The company ethos ‘Never Not Creating’ ensures every project we undertake benefits from an ingrained passion and cultural knowledge, earning Fluid a renowned reputation for consistently evolving creativity.

Admiring the perfect hairstyles in the glossy magazines, you'd probably assume that to bag yourself a photoworthy barnet from a celebrity hairstylist, you'd have to pay big bucks down in the capital city. But, as a loyal and ever-growing crowd of clients in and around Wolverhampton will tell you, we have two hairstylists to the stars in our midst (and you won't even have to re-mortgage the house for a cut and blow). Hairdressing duo Royston Blythe and Nick Malenko currently own two hugely successful salons, but operate primarily from the flagship in Compton, near Tettenhall. Here, they cater for everyone; working mums, style-conscious teenagers and ladies who lunch, right up to the mega-famous household names gracing the pages of those aforementioned glossy mags. Looking at their credentials, it's no surprise that Royston and Nick are in such constant demand from the likes of Katie Price, Tamara Ecclestone, Alex Gerrard and Rachel Hunter to name but a few. After four decades honing their skills at catwalk shows, photoshoots and various media platforms, their CV now includes teaching and presenting around the world, celebrity weddings, styling for OK, Vogue, and Marie Claire, judging at national competitions, working at designer shows for the likes of Christian Lacroix and performing hair makeovers on GMTV and Sky One. And, naturally, their trendy and dynamic team of staff stand to benefit from such driven and inspirational figureheads. Booking a standard cut and blowdry in the Compton salon means you'll

likely be coiffed by a talented young stylist who has produced the cover look of Hair magazine, styled at Harvey Nichols shows, produced collections in Paris, graduated from Advanced Colourist degree courses or won British Hairdressing Awards. Down in the London salon, which is located within the opulent surroundings of the world-famous Dorchester Hotel on Park Lane, you can even go one better and share a hairdresser with the royal family; Creative Director Ian Carmichael has been personal hairdresser to Her Majesty the Queen for thirteen years. In this salon, the emphasis is on luxury and personal service, and a beautiful blowdry here is undoubtedly one of the finest ways to spend time in the city.
Guitar & Son IT’S only rock and roll but they like it at Guitar & Son and blues, and classical or any other kind of music. This Stafford store is a place where music really does make the people come together: up and coming musicians eager to learn, those looking to buy a new instrument, others needing to replace a part on theirs and some wanting to get their sounds out to a wider audience. All this and more can be found from the Eastgate Street shop, launched by Eric Furze back in 1995. Today the store is a vital stop-off for anyone who is someone Staffordshire’s busy music scene - but it also attracts artists from around the country, many of whom come to Guitar & Son while on tour. These have included Climax Blues Band bassist, Derek Holt; Nektar guitar virtuoso, Roye Albrighton, and up-and-coming Wolverhampton indie band The Lines.
20
“We’re a general musical instrument store, but we also offer a full repair service for guitars and amplifiers,” says Eric, whose career has been spent in the entertainment industry and from which the shop was a natural progression. “I’ve always been a promoter, organising gigs and bands would always need strings for their guitars so I started taking strings along and selling them,” he explains. Today, the bands and solo artists still come to Eric at Guitar & Son, from where he continues to organise gigs and promote them locally, nationally and now globally since he and his youngest son Jake started presenting an online radio show at www.stafford.fm But Guitar & Son is not all about what’s happening now - it’s keen to help musicians of the future and offers in-store guitar and bass tuition while Eric can also put people in touch with teachers of a whole host of different musical instruments.
“It doesn’t matter what kind of music it is as long as it’s music I don’t mind,” he says. Another benefit of coming into the shop - where customers can not only park in front of the building but try out the products and services and drop off CDs for the radio show - is that there’s no shortage of free help and advice available from Eric and his staff. “We can show youngsters amps, how to tune drums and that noise isn’t everything; it’s a lot more than just plugging in,” says the man who describes himself as a “happy” bass player. “There’s a thriving scene of upcoming bands here and I can pass them on to live music venues such as the Sugar Mill at Stoke or the Flapper and Firkin in Birmingham.”
Being such an established and respected part of Staffordshire’s music world, it’s no surprise that Guitar & Son is known by musicians across the country - but modest Eric puts that down to his store’s “daft name”. But actually, the title is a further source of pride. “The shop’s named after an album recorded in Stafford by Pete Haycock of the Climax Blues Band,” explains Eric. “He was a favourite guitarist of mine who lived locally. He’s a session musician now and lives in Germany but he did come in here and was proud and pleased I was keeping the name alive.”
Guitar & Son is open from 10am until 6pm all week, except Wednesdays when it is open from 10am to 4pm. For further information telephone 01785 606614. Photographs by Jodie Cunningham.

A REVOLUTIONARY new cooking system is not only quenching the flaring flames of the barbecue, it’s tamed those of a Dragon as well. Theo Paphitas has maintained a keen interest in the GrillStream system ever since it impressed him and the rest of the formidable panel in a 2009 episode of the BBC’s Dragon’s Den.
Barbecue cooking doesn’t get much more ‘grilling’ than this.
For further information about the GrillSteam Ltd and it’s ground-breaking new cooking system, go to www.grillstream.co.uk
Since that first appearance, and a follow-up episode in 2010, GrillStream Technology has been licensed to a number of manufacturers across the globe and has been a smash hit in the barbecuing world. The system has been developed by barbecue fanatics Ian Worton and Peter Neath, who set out on a quest to cook the perfect sausage without setting a barbecue alight, causing excessive flare-up or ending a season with a greasy, messy piece of equipment. Using their extensive engineering skills, they have been able to solve the barbecuer’s age-old problem of fat fires. They have invented an open bar grill system which streams the fat away from the cooking site and into a collection vessel for easy disposal. “This means healthier food as it stops the burning and excessive smoke, which contains harmful substances, and gives uneven cooking,” explains Peter. “When barbecuing, how many times have we all burnt the outside of the food, yet, at the same time run the real risk of serving it up raw in the middle? “By preventing the fat/oil from dripping onto the heat source, yet still allowing for direct convected and radiant heat Grillstream is the perfect open bar grill system, streaming away the fat for virtually flare-free, clean and healthy grilling.” And, ultimately, that sausage ends up being cooked to perfection. Since its two Dragon’s Den appearances, in between which Jeff Moore joined the business, GrillStream has successfully licensed its technology to a number of manufacturers from all over the world, particularly in France and the USA, and now offers a range of GrillStream grills for domestic cookers and barbecues. Just launched is the 360, a kettle replacement grill which can be retro fitted and which GrillStream Ltd will be suppling direct to the public in this country and abroad. The company also plans to focus on the domestic and commercial cooker market where, says Peter, the technology can be equally well applied to give new options to indoor cooking. And as its range of products increases, the company, currently based in offices on the Papermill End Industrial Estate in Great Barr, Birmingham, has high expectations of taking on commercial production units in the region.

THE LEISUREBOX N-ice to see you, to see you n-ice! Birmingham is celebrating now that, since the beginning of the year, it has its own fullsize ice rink once more. Midlands families are falling over themselves to visit the city’s coolest attraction, part of a huge revamped complex in Pershore Street. Entertainments firm Midland Leisure Centre ltd has breathed new life into the former Silver Blades and Planet Ice rink which was gutted by fire in 2003. The company has transformed the building into The Leisurebox - a venue for the 21st century now also boasting a 24-lane bowling alley, restaurant, licensed bar, pool tables and amusements. Now able to offer birthday party celebrations, visitors can choose to bowl or skate for on their special day - or combine the two with two bowling games and unlimited skating time. But you don’t need to have a party to double the fun - one of The Leisurebox’s most popular packages is the £10 bowl and unlimited skating. With its UV lighting effects and the latest in technology and amusements, which include a rollercoaster simulator, the bowling alley is a huge draw for families and friends seeking a great way to have fun. But there’s no doubt that everybody’s really excited to see Birmingham back on the ice skating map - and Leisurebox hasn’t forgotten the city’s prestigious contribution to the sport. The rink has been named the Olympian Ice Rink in honour of the Birmingham born 1988 Olympic speed skating gold medalist Wilf O’Reilly, who trained at Silver Blades, and the late John Curry, the the world champion and Olympic gold ice dancer who also trained
in the city. All ages and abilities are catered for - Ice Toddler sessions are aimed at parents with youngsters aged between 18 months and five - while Ice dancers and speed skaters are all expected to flock to the new rink. Those wishing to up the pace can take advantage of Learn to Play Ice Hockey, an English Ice Hockey Association course covering the sport’s basics, including elementary skating, puck control, balance and passing. And if you have never donned blades and stepped out on a rink and yearn to glide effortlessly across the ice, then the John Curry Ice Skating Academy is running the Skate UK-approved Learn to Skate course, developed by the National Ice Skating Academy. “As a sport, ice skating could help you burn about 400 calories an hour: what a great and fun way to keep fit,” says The Leisurebox’s General Manager Chris Carpenter. “Apart from the adults-only sessions on Tuesdays, our Learn To Skate lessons are mixed so that the whole family can learn together. More than 50,000 people a year complete a formal Skate UK Learn to Skate Course and the success of television’s Dancing On Ice has helped to make this extremely popular. “Our John Curry Ice Skating Academy is about to be opened to develop City skaters to competition level so there's no better time to join than now and be part of it from the start. It's incredibly exciting for the people of Birmingham to have their own ice rink once again.” All the facilities at the Leisurebox are available for corporate events, private hire and special occasions.

Izaak Walton Golf Club Izaak Walton Golf Club was formed in 1993 exactly 400 years after the birth of the celebrated writer Izaak Walton who is best remembered as the author of The Compleat (sic) Angler or The Contemplative Man’s Recreation. It is a private members club but visitors and societies are always made welcome and Jill Mattocks who has been catering for members and visitors alike for over 15 years is renowned throughout the golfing fraternity of the West Midlands for her home made pies such as Chicken, Leek and Stilton which is a firm favourite. A & H Dental Care WHEN it comes to providing high quality cosmetic and general dentistry, it’s the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth for A & H Dental Care. Husband and wife team Adam and Helen Precelton are passionate about not only offering the very best and the latest treatments available, but also giving exemplary customer service and a unique friendly experience that cannot be matched. “Everyone finds bad service or indifference annoying and insulting and when we established the practice in 2000, we vowed that we would never let anyone walk away disappointed at our efforts,” declares Adam. The results speak for themselves. Adam was was nominated through testimonials from patients, laboratories and staff to be a finalist in The Probe (Dental Journal) Dentist of the Year but, even more importantly, when the couple, reluctantly, decided to provide the practice services independently from the NHS, last September, they were told to expect to keep no more than 40% of the adult patients and no children. Yet they retained half of the registered children, and 65% of patients overall. The practice introduced a membership scheme which has proved incredibly popular, allowing patients to spread the cost of their routine care and receive a discount on treatments, at the same time creating a bond with the practice. “Keeping registration alive is key to working on long-term care, with preventative approaches being a large part of our treatment ethos,” says Adam. “To do this effectively you need to see patients regularly and long term.”
Today it also has a decontamination room - part of Adam and Helen’s determination to maintain the highest standards in every aspect. “New HTM01-05 cross infection control guidance from the Department of Health (DoH) allows two tiers of compliance,” explains Adam. “Our decontamination room with automated instrument cleaning ensures the maximum safety of patients; we could not settle for just meeting the 'Essential Requirements' laid out by the DoH but went straight to 'Best Practice' level.” A founder and now Gold member of the British Dental Association’s Good Practice Scheme, A & H Dental Care has six members of staff and provides in-house training, collaborating with external bodies to achieve formal certificated recognition for receptionists. All the clinical staff are registered with the General Dental Council and carry out its required Continued Professional Development while regular training and update sessions ensure all are familiar with the latest policies, procedures and practices. “A & H Dental Care has been lovingly created over 11 years in our own vision of great dental care with a high level of customer satisfaction,” says Adam. “We aim to build a personal relationship with each patient as an individual, listen to their wants and needs and exceed their expectations.”
For full details about A & H Dental Care’s services and opening times, visit www.ahdentalcare.co.uk or telephone 01926 499991.
Based at 38 West Street, Warwick, the practice covers routine dental care such as health checks, scale and polish appointments and x-rays, through to advanced restorative treatments including white fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, root canal treatments, dentures and implants. Professional whitening is also offered along with sleep assessment appointments to consider options such as antisnore appliances or whether to seek advice on sleep apnoea. Adult and child custom-made sports guards are also available. From the start, Adam wanted modern well-equipped surgeries with every technology available used to improve the patient experience - in 2000 when dentists were still writing paper notes his new practice was fully computerised.

CRONIN & CO. BIRMINGHAM based corporate insurance broker Cronin & Co is celebrating after gaining prestigious Chartered Insurance Broker status. Awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), the accolade, which is only awarded to firms who meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism, financial stability and insurance capability, places the company among fewer than 100 of the UK’s 4,000 insurance brokers who have this prestigious title. It’s a highly-sought after insurance accolade and almost exclusive in today’s insurance market, but Cronin & Co, based in Barnt Green, is no stranger to exclusivity. It prides itself on the range and nature of specialist insurance schemes it offers its diverse range of clientele - many of these schemes are unavailable through the more run-of-the-mill insurance broker.
So it was more a natural progression for Cronin & Co to achieve Chartered status, which commits all those who gain it to the CII’s Code of Ethics, reinforcing the highest standards of professional practice in their business dealings. “As a business we already adhered to high standards so we thought we would apply for Chartered status, which would help to reposition the business within the minority of commercial brokers in the UK who hold the title” says Darren. “We were audited by the Chartered Insurance Institute and approval was granted” The acquisition of the title, in May, followed hot on the heels of a move to the current bigger and better premises and now sees the company looking to develop its range of affinity schemes by consulting with trade associations, designing bespoke policy wordings in line with Cronin’s ethos of bespoking policies and providing cost effective insurance solutions for the associations’ members. “We’re in a service industry and insurance is a necessary purchase, but we can help people by offering policies they can’t access elsewhere which are dovetailed to their business,” says Darren. “The future’s exciting and we’re very confident going forward.” To browse Cronin & Co’s extensive range of products, to find out more about its services in partnership with CEDA, or to read testimonials from satisfied clients praising its high levels of friendly service, visit its websites www.croninandco.co.uk and www.alacarteinsurance.co.uk To make an enquiry, email info@croninandco.co.uk or telephone 0121 445 5480.

For example, having worked closely with and being the appointed insurance broker to CEDA, the Catering Equipment Distribution Association, Cronin & Co has developed a suite of products tailored to match the exact requirements of CEDA members and associate members. “We have a bespoke policy called Á la Cârte which is unique to Cronin’s,” declares managing director and company founder Darren Cronin. “If you’re in the catering industry and you want a quotation for this policy, you can only obtain it through us, your regular broker can’t access it.” Established in 2005 to service the business requirements across a range of business sectors, Cronin & Co’s clientele includes owner managed businesses through to large corporates, along with high net-worth private clients throughout the UK. While the world of insurance can be complicated, Darren and his professional team ensure their business ethos remains simple. “We analyse clients’ requirements and provide products tailored to them at commercially competitive rates,” he says.

THERE’S some masterly building work going on the Midlands right now - that’s because it’s being carried out by JWF Building Solutions Ltd, which was recently named the Midland Region, Builder of the Year. The Staffordshire based company received the accolade from the Federation of Master Builders, of which it is a member, in the medium renovation projects category covering professional residential /domestic restoration refurbishment or extension costing between £50,000 - £250,000. Its second-storey extension to a traditional farmhouse to create a games room with master bedroom suite above, may have been a prize-winner, but every project JWF undertakes is a prize winner for its clients.. “We are a friendly, family run-business always putting the client first,” insists director Neil French.
“Along with our award-winning credentials, we are trying to stand out from the crowd as a good quality builder offering a good job at a good price.” Currently based in Marchington, for more than 20 years JWF has been carrying out residential projects such as extensions, renovations, conversions and remodels while commercial schemes have included office, retail, leisure and restaurants. Although mainly covering the Midland region, its contracts in all sectors have seen it take on projects throughout the UK. In that time it has become a specialist in renovations, gaining enviable reputation for its work with graded and listed properties, using its wealth of knowledge to understand and use the most appropriate and sympathetic materials and methods for the valued buildings. It has previously completed work on a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is about to embark on three listed barns for conversion to residential use. However, in a conservation area it is also rebuilding a farmhouse with a traditional exterior and fusing this with an ultra modern interior scheme, thus giving the client the best of both worlds. “At the moment our work is mainly residential but that changes depending on what projects we have in the pipeline,” says Neil. “Sometimes we can be doing all residential and sometimes we can be doing mainly commercial. “We do work with some famous clients and some very successful businesses in the region, however we wouldn’t disclose their names,” he smiles. With its team of associated professionals, JWF is able to provide a full construction package, from a free, no-obligation quotation through to architects’ drawings, design inspiration, planning applications, project management and interior design. Fully insured, it is particularly proud to be able to offer the Masterbond Warranty, which offers the client a guarantee on its work for a specified period.

BUSINESS ENERGY SUSTAINS SUCCESS Everybody has their “Eureka” moment. For Dr Keith Farmer it was well over 40 years ago, in that time his businesses built up an enviable reputation and an impressive list of satisfied clients. In 2010 a minor reorganisation led to the formation of Keith Farmer Associates; combining the multiple skills of a diverse and dynamic team of architectural and planning consultants. Keith Farmer Associates provides a onestop shop for property owners across the region; conversions, alterations, renovations and new builds are all handled with skill and empathy by this highly professional company. Although today, construction technologies are developing at a furious pace, older buildings will always need a traditional, specialist approach. Keith Farmer Associates’ experience in all aspects of traditional design and modern construction generates innovative and practical design solutions, making the most of renewable energy technology, resulting in extremely practical, financially and energy efficient buildings. The introduction of the recently launched SIRIAS assessment service in the solar energy marketplace ensures maximum sustainability at every level. SIRIAS certification will guarantee that the customer’s roof is suitable for the installation of Photo Voltaic panels; an attractive investment for many property owners. Roofs no longer just keep the weather out; they provide an income. Technology continues to change the way they plan, work, and build at Keith Farmer Associates, and they are delighted to support growing and developing technology, especially when working with experts like Carl Benfield and his specialist team at Prescient Power. Keith Farmer Associates’ approach to new projects has always been to make the best use of available technology, but without pushing untested limits, it’s a question of designing for the future and building in every financial advantage. As an example of the diverse range of talents this company can bring to bear, when a local authority letter to a firework company nearly became an explosive confrontation, the calm, professional experience of Keith Farmer Associates defused the situation and delivered measurable benefits for the company’s future. “A basic cost analysis suggested that the company
should move” said Ian Firth, project co-ordinator. Accepting the advice, the company created new business opportunities in the process - which is in turn igniting significant interest in other small businesses in the area. A clear example of reward and success achieved through the professionalism and empathy from the Keith Farmer Associates Planning Team.

MASTER MAGNETS LTD RENOWNED for its wide range of products and services, Master Magnets Ltd is the UK’s number one manufacturer of industrial magnetic separation equipment whose continued expansion of its global presence has provided another fantastic year of trading.
Chairman Geoff Worley writes: “The manufacturing industry faced many challenges last year, due to the slow recovery of the global economy and for many of our customers, getting hold of finance was still very difficult, which slowed down many projects that were due to go ahead.”
Its worldwide success saw it highly commended in the Exporter of the Year category of this year’s Midlands Business Awards.
“Fortunately, despite these issues, Mastermag had a very successful year as the demand for magnetic separation equipment remained comparatively high, most likely due to the continually-increasing material prices for aluminium and steel.”
Managing Director Adrian Coleman writes: “If ever there were a way to celebrate over 30 years of successful trading, then it is with a regional award that recognises your business for its overseas exporting achievements.” “Our core business is the design and manufacture of industrial magnetic separation and metal detection equipment, which we sell to over 21 countries. Exports accounted for 55% of our turnover last year and with agents in 17 countries, including the USA, Germany, India and Italy, it is something high on our list of priorities.” At its purpose-built 17,000 sq ft factory unit in Redditch, Master Magnets, known as Mastermag, produces equipment that enables companies to recover valuable recyclable metals such as steel, aluminium and copper. The range of equipment is also often installed to protect expensive processing machinery from damaging metals and can be used to ensure that valuable end products such as food stuffs are also free from metallic contaminants. Its industrial magnetic solutions are used by a wide range of sectors, including recycling, quarrying and mining, ceramic and powder handling and food processing. “Our services are known to be some of the best in the world,” says Mr. Coleman. “From our pre-sales services, which can include site evaluations and product sample testing, through to the commissioning services that can be carried out on our existing customers’ machines, Master Magnets will endeavour to provide helpful services throughout the entire sales process to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction. With the award starting 2011 on such a high note, Mastermag is looking forward to what is sure to be another successful year.
52
“Forecasts for aluminium prices in particular over the next few years are very positive and the International Aluminium Institute expects the volume of recovered scrap to leap from approximately 9.5 million tonnes in 2010, to almost 17 million tonnes in 2020. This could prove instrumental for an increase in Mastermag Eddy Current Separator sales, given their significance in non-ferrous recovery.” “Our future looks very bright and as we continue to trade and grow world-wide, we look forward to seeing the company develop even further in the coming years.”

“We can form working partnerships that ensure that the most complex projects run smoothly.” It is this flexiblity and willingness to work closely with customers that not only led to the manufacturer of Elkington Brothers largest tool - a 3.5 metres cubed giant weighing in at about 25 tons - it has resulted in the company manufacturing products across a broad range of industries, such as the automotive, aerospace, nuclear power and domestic appliance sectors throughout Europe, America and Japan. In the UK alone, its impressive client roll-call includes Landrover and, to tier one suppliers of, Aston Martin, Jaguar, CAT, JCB, Bentley, BMW, Toyota, Nissan and Lotus. “From patterns, moulds and models in a variety of materials, to fixtures, tooling and prototypes, we have the capability to deliver,” declares James. “Our long-standing customer base is testament to the quality of our work and our friendly, time-served staff always welcome a visit from prospective clients. component that is simpler and reduce the number of joints required. “Every join is a potential leak path for any media going through the system so it’s important to keep the number of potential leak paths to a minimum. Larger companies are often unable, or unwilling, to do this.” The ability and expertise of the BA Components team to work with specialist alloys make it a popular choice for many of the industry’s leading companies, such as Honeywell and Total. “Many others won’t entertain working with these alloys because they’re very expensive materials and difficult to machine,” says Andrew. BA Components may be a small company, but it’s a highly specialised business that’s big on flexibility and the needs of its globally renowned clients.
“We are known for our capabilities in machining special alloys, turning them into the components that customers need, but may unable to source from anywhere else.”
Just six people work at its headquarters on the Park Farm Industrial Estate, in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, but it is an environment that hums with scientific knowledge and engineering precision skills.
Whether it’s a standard order, a bespoke request or problem solving - Andrew says they are often asked to put their expertise to good use in this way - the level of service and customer satisfaction is critical to everyone at BA Components, which has BS EN ISO 9001 accreditation.
Here is where BA Components manufactures high quality stainless steel components including double ferrule tube fittings, high pressure fittings, hydraulic hose fittings and adaptors.
“We like to develop close relationships’ with clients. It’s a very important aspect of how we work. We like to visit the client where possible to discuss their requirements in detail,” states Andrew. “They have confidence in us to give them what they’re asking for.”

The fittings are used in industries such as petrochemicals, chemicals, desalinisation, chromatography and hydraulics anywhere high precision fittings are required to work at high pressure. For BA Components, this means predominantly supplying to the oil and gas producing centres including Aberdeen, Norway and the Middle East - although managing director Andrew Westland acknowledges that products manufactured on site may end up almost anywhere in the world. “We often manufacture and supply components to clients who may be assembling equipment on behalf of another company,” he explains. “It might be an oil company, water company, paper mill, we don’t always see where product is finally installed.” Established 11 years ago by Andrew, and fellow managing director Barry O’Brien, after working together for others in the industry, this experience gives BA Components big advantages over larger competitors. “We can be more specialised and flexible,” says Andrew. “As well as standard products we can handle bespoke requirements. It could be something in a different material, or making ‘specials’ to keep the number of joints to a minimum, thus reducing the number of potential leak paths. “An engineer will look to have several items assembled to carry the media from one place to another. Elite
Antennas
FOR a business that is truly unique to this country, you don’t have to look much further than Elite Antennas. The company is in the privileged position of being Britain’s only specialist metal spinner dedicated to the production of primefocus aluminium antennas. And while it may be based on the Leominster Enterprise Park in Herefordshire, the eight-strong team of specialists have the world at their feet, with clients from across the globe. Elite Antennas runs its own Forestry Commission-certified timber packaging operation and has available a line of antennas which can be dismantled for transport and storage before being rebuilt on site, thus bringing savings in terms of warehousing and transport costs without in any way compromising surface accuracy or stability. With most of its products being used in commercial, military and research applications - the British Forces and the Met Office are among some of its most prestigious clients - the company offers a range of reflector assemblies in popular sizes and a wide range of colours - with white or grey proving the most popular but can also tailor them to meet customers’ requirements. Indeed it is proud of its adaptability and flexible build system, which enables prototyping and one-off work to be completed rapidly and economically while allowing straightforward integration or subsequent engineering operations.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with customers to develop specific antenna solutions for integration into their systems,” says Elite Antennas’ managing director Richard Holliday. “For example, if you require a specialist finish for a harsh environment such as offshore or desert, please let us know and we will work with you to provide the best results.” Desert heat or Arctic freeze - the company’s flexibility accommodates nature’s extremes; its range of de-icing options covers its antennas and feeds and it works closely with Surface Heating Systems of Kircaldy, Scotland, to provide the best possible de-ice solutions. As one would expect from such a specialist, Elite Antennas’ capacity for spinning aluminium microwave reflectors is thought to be the largest in Europe, with plant and tooling covering all sizes up to 3.7 metres diameter (12ft) in a variety of popular focal lengths. It also operates three specialised spinning lathes in 1.2, 2.4 and 3.7m capacities with a variety of steel and aluminium tooling. This massive spinning capability is complemented by a robust machining and fabrication operation comprising manual and CNC milling and turning and a wide spectrum of welding and brazing processes. Elite also employs specialist contractors for work which it cannot handle in-house. “Our machining capabilities are tailored towards rapid volume production of antenna components, allowing the company to build large numbers of high quality parts at low cost, and to the highest standards.” says Richard. “We offer a wide variety of build options, from the development of completely bespoke antenna systems to the supply of reflectors and parts on a component basis.” Always at the forefront of technical developments in a fastmoving industry, Elite Antennas is a regular presence at some of its most high-profile exhibitions around the world and this year will be no exception with company representatives due to attend events in the Middle East, the United States and Europe.

Scientific instruments for characterising materials from aspirin to asphalt, coffee to concrete, plastics to powder coatings.
“We now have direct operations in all key markets and strong partnerships with exclusive distributors elsewhere,” he said. “Our close working relationships in all areas ensure that the customer experience is consistent the world over. Added to this, our investment in web-based delivery of information and support provides universal access to the wealth of experience and expertise that resides within Malvern’s global organisation.” Used in industries as diverse as minerals processing and pharmaceutical drug discovery, Malvern systems support the understanding, improvement and optimisation of many industrial processes. They measure properties that have an impact in many areas. For example: • Particle size influences powder coating performance, drug absorption speed, cement strength, and the ‘mouth feel’ of chocolate
Malvern’s modern facility houses the company’s global manufacturing and commercial operations. Since its foundation in the early 1970s Malvern Instruments has been an integral part of the Worcestershire town from which it takes its name. Today this award-winning scientific instruments company contributes significantly to the local economy, employing a workforce of around 200 - and currently recruiting - at its global headquarters on the Enigma Business Park, and a total of 600 worldwide. A net exporter, with more than 90 percent of production destined for overseas markets, Malvern is a truly global company, a fact recognised once again with this year’s Queen’s Award for International Trade.
• Particle shape affects manufacturing of toners, pharmaceuticals, and abrasives, and knowing a particle’s chemical composition adds further insight • Producing and using nanoparticles requires detailed information about their properties and behaviour • Natural and synthetic molecules, whether for drug delivery or plastics production, require detailed characterisation

This year’s Queen’s Award makes it ‘two in a row’ following the company’s success in the Innovation category in 2010 for the continued development of the Zetasizer Nano particle characterisation system. “I don’t normally boast about our successes, but this really is an achievement that should make everyone at Malvern Instruments proud,” said Managing Director Paul Walker. “Two Queen’s Awards in successive years, at a time of considerable global economic uncertainty, should see every member of our teams giving themselves a pat on the back.”

Robinsons of Worcester IN the macho world of haulage, a fleet of big pink trucks tend to stand out - but Robinsons of Worcester is a business that likes to stand out from the crowd. An established UK and European haulage company specialising in bulk tipping with an enviable reputation for delivering an exceptional level of service, it is a major player in the industry and has come a long way from its farming origins. And those pink trucks are fast achieving the status hitherto enjoyed by the Eddie Stobbart fleet: the company’s busy Facebook page already has more than 200 followers, all eager to follow the drivers on their travels and post sightings of the distinctive vehicles. “We are getting a name for ourselves because of the colour,” agrees proprietor and founder Edward Robinson. “We are proud of our pink trucks.” Robinsons of Worcester began as a livestock and dairy farming business more than 70 years ago. In 2001, when it lost 4,000 sheep to foot-and-mouth disease Edward passed his LGV test. Once back in the livestock trade, the company purchased a single lorry to meet its own needs, but the increasing demand for transport and a growing customer base resulted in the purchase of further vehicles and its haulage business has been expanding ever since. This year alone it has taken delivery of four new trucks and a further three are due to be added to the fleet of 21, 11 of which are Robinsons’ own and the rest sub contracted.
From its base at Besford, near Pershore, the company is proud of its highly efficient road haulage operation and ability to offer extensive transport solutions. Its commitment to remaining at the forefront of haulage technology and being fully conversant with the latest legal requirements is reflected in the tip-top condition of the lorries which are all equipped with vehicle tracking systems that benefit customers and aid driver safety. The provision of Driver CPC Training, also contributes to the high driving standards and road safety. TASCC (Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops) approved and with TASCC-trained drivers, Robinsons of Worcester, a Road Haulage Association member, only uses trusted sub contractors who all comply with its terms and conditions of business and adhere to the TASCC Code of Practice for Road Haulage.
Mudie-Bond Mercedes-Benz Franchised Truck dealer. Dedicated to supporting the continued success of Robinsons of Worcester after 10 Years! Our congratulations & thanks to them
The strict compliance with safety regulations combined with dedication to the delivering the best service possible has resulted in not only continued success but prestigious contracts too, with Robinson’s of Worcester making deliveries of animal feed and collections from the royal estates of Windsor and Sandringham. And just why are those trucks pink? Step forward Isabelle Robinson, Edward’s daughter and fan of pink. When he ordered a new Mercedes tractor unit in 2009 Edward had it painted just for her. It proved such a talking point that other vehicles in the fleet were soon sporting the same colour. The pride and joy of every Robinsons driver, some of the trucks are on show at two major forthcoming events this year, giving fans the opportunity to see them up close. Remember you can always follow them on Facebook.

shower and TV and audio centre make this boat the perfect place to relax if the weather takes a toll on your adventure. Touches of design intelligence betray the SC42’s considered creation and underline the team’s starting point: the ultimate satisfaction of the end user. To achieve this, every detail counts; some 2100 individual concept drawings go into any one Sealine design, and each component must be carefully developed and analysed, tested, tweaked and tested again, through tanktesting, prototype development and final production. Setting this ultimate standard, Richard and his team take pride in delivering innovation in its most perfect form. With over 15 years’ experience as a naval architect, Richard’s guidance helps inspire the framework within which the team works, first identifying function and then creating form. With the latest software now at its disposal and a wealth of specialist skills between them, the team is confident that the designs will continue to push the boundaries of innovation into the future. When Richard first joined Sealine in 2006 he set out to revolutionise the hull technology, specifically the ground-breaking SC47. Now, drawing on the added expertise of his growing team, Richard is working hard to evolve the rest of the new range. Watch this space.

Also on show will be the new F42 launched at the 2010 Southampton Boat Show.
The SC42 is a bold and innovative new design offering more social space than on any other cruiser of this size. Perfect for outdoor living, the SC42 can be transformed from wind in the hair boating to full protection in a matter of seconds. The craft features a unique full length soft top roof system, with integrated opening side canvases and large opening side windows which let in the light and the fresh air.
This new model has received many plaudits as a result of its ground breaking design features and top level all round performance. Offering unrivalled space for entertaining, the F42 is a stylish practical cruising boat that can sleep five in comfort in a very flexible living space. It also has the advantage of joystick controlled Volvo IPS engines for maximum manoeuvrability.
One of the most significant design features of the SC42 is the cockpit layout which makes maximum use of the full beam width of the boat for seating and entertaining. Key features include four wide forward facing seats at the helm, a fully integrated dashboard, two wet bar areas behind the helm and two dining tables with two ‘L’ shaped seating areas port and starboard. The seating, on sliders, can be joined together to create one large ‘C’ shaped lounge. A drop in infill creates a very large sun-pad whilst the backrests from the seating also fold down to create a rear facing sun-bed. There is safe easy access through the craft to the wide forward side decks. The SC42 will deliver a cockpit space like no other.
The F42 has Sealine’s unique and distinctive extended fly-bridge with space for six to dine in comfort. The single level deck has a three part sliding door joining the cockpit to the saloon. A comfortable L shaped seating area is on the starboard side with further seating on the port side. The galley is located forward. The layout of the open plan interior generates a feeling of space and light which is further enhanced by the large wrap around windscreen which also provides some stunning panoramic views.

A grille makes a difference; a Zunsport grille makes a statement - no wonder discerning car owners make it their first choice when it comes to enhancing their vehicles. The Walsall Wood company sells grilles for a wide range of cars which it manufactures from premium quality stainless steel wire mesh, regardless of whether they have a chrome or black finish. All are guaranteed for the lifetime of the vehicle and, if an owner can’t find a grille for his particular car, then Zunsport Ltd is happy to discuss the options for making a one-off. No wonder it’s known as the specialist stainless steel wire mesh car grille company. “Zunsport prides itself on being a customer-focused company and goes out of its way to provide complete customer satisfaction,” says Managing Director Peter Langston. “To give our customers choice and great service we sell through our own website - with a 98% success rate of delivery the day after order - and through a nationwide network of approved dealers.” With orders coming in from all over the world, the company accepts it may take a little longer than 24 hours for a grille to arrive at some destinations but once the price has been totaled at the online check-out, it will remain fixed, no matter which door in the world the order is being sent too.
And those ordering online do so worry-free, secure in the knowledge that Zunsport uses SSL, the most advanced ordering security system available which encrypts all personal information, including credit card numbers. There are many reasons motorists are choosing Zunsport grilles, not least because they are hand-crafted by the company specialists from 316L stainless steel which is either electropolished to provide a long-lasting bright finish, or coated with a black polymer. Both finishes are robust, having been extensively tested for strength and durability. However their key features are that they’re easy to fit - for many no tools or changes to the car are required - and they give added protection to radiators, brakes, oil coolers, etc. from ingress of clogging leaves and damaging road detritus. And, of course, they just give a car a great look, bringing an enormous amount of pleasure to the owner. “The raison d’etre for buying a Zunsport grille is pride in the performance and styling of your car,” says Peter. “We wish to enhance that experience.” It goes without saying that quality rates in equal importance with customer satisfaction. Says Peter: “We are serious about the quality of everything that we do. “Our quality and management systems are independently approved, and our performance regularly audited, by Lloyds Register of Quality Assurance - so you can have confidence in buying a Zunsport car grille.” When you see that business customers include Peugeot Citroen and Jaguar, you know that you’re dealing with the very best but Zunsport doesn’t need to see a prestigious name on an order form to consider a client special. “All of our customers are special,” Peter insists. “That is why everyone who buys a Zunsport grille is immediately enrolled into our Members Club where they receive discounts, information, and entry to our quarterly prize draw.”

GOOD old-fashioned family business values of outstanding customer service, attention to detail and high quality work have seen Aldridge Accident Repair Centre through decades of success.
It’s no wonder that AARC, being at the forefront of ‘best working practices’ is recognised as one of the most innovative independent local businesses in the motor industry - it has also achieved the highest technical standards for the industry `PAS 125`.
But that’s the only thing old-fashioned about the company which, as it marks its 90-year anniversary in 2011, continues to demonstrate its 21st century approach, not least by keeping in tune with the modern-day concerns of today’s motorist.
Today’s third generation owner and MD Martin Collins, who has more than 30 years’ experience, believes the strength of the business is based on exceeding customers’ expectations - and is still surprised by the number of third generation clients AARC has.
No wonder it’s been designated a BSI ‘Superbrand’ - one of the country’s first accident repair centres to be so - and voted the most loved repair and service centre in the UK by the Great British public.
“When a vehicle is damaged, even if it’s only a few small dents, it can be the start of an extremely stressful time for the owner,” he says. “However, let our customer care team can take care of you and we will process all your paperwork, organise your courtesy car and booking dates. We are small enough to care and big enough to repair and we can take the dent out of your accident.”
Aldridge Accident Repair Centre (AARC) was established in 1921 by former First World War drill sergeant Billy Bunn who, with meticulous attention to detail, was the driving force behind the company’s growth until his retirement, aged 70.
It’s that combination of caring for customers and its own environmental practices that sees AARC offer an eco re-tuning service to motorists fed up with rising fuel prices, from which its own fleet of cars is already benefitting.
It is now housed within fresh, attractive and welcoming premises at Vigo Place, which include a purpose-designed 12,000 sq ft works facility boasting the latest state-of-the-art industry equipment, including computerised body and chassis alignment systems and computerised wheel and suspension alignment. A member of the Motor Vehicle Repairers Association (now incorporated within the Retail Motor Industry’s Federation), and holder of the RMI `Trust My Garage` Shield, other services are undertaken by expert staff fully trained in the latest techniques and well versed in the importance of customer care and quality, include: tyre replacement, paintless dent removal, windscreen repairs, valeting service, alloy wheel repairs and parking sensors installation. And all that AARC does is backed up by its status as a British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemarked Superbrand. This prestigious accolade, awarded only after stringent external assessments, was recently introduced by the BSI for garages and workshops which exceeded its Kitemark Quality standard and has only been awarded to the top 200 of a 500-strong business superbrand listing.
Having invested in full technical facilities it can eco re-calibrate or retune - turbo diesel cars, vans or light commercial vehicles to deliver up to 20% improvement in fuel economy and/or up to 40% more power which not only saves fuel, it helps drivers reduce their carbon footprint.
For more details on this or any other AARC service, go to www.aarc.co.uk or telephone 01922 452103.

Filter Fit Ltd FILTER FIT is a star and a headline act in the filtration industry - no wonder it counts the nationally renowned Birmingham Hippodrome theatre among a long list of satisfied clients. But then customer satisfaction is what this small Vale of Evesham company is all about, with its origins based firmly in the ambitions of its directors to make up for what they had seen lacking elsewhere. MD Louise Garfield and operations director David Hicks launched Filter Fit in 2008 after despairing at the lack of customer service they were seeing towards clients in previous employed roles. David, who has many years’ experience in the filtration industry, and Louise, who comes from a sales and retail manufacturing background, based their new company in Honeybourne and, right from day one, have designed everything to work around customers, with customers’ needs the priority. Combined with quick product turnaround times and a very competitive pricing structure, it’s proved to be a recipe for success. Just over three years on from launch, there are plans to double Filter Fit’s storage capacity by moving to an even bigger warehouse nearby. Now with a staff of five, the company specialises in the supply, fitting and disposal of commercial and industrial air filters and fan belts, dealing with some of the country’s most prestigious maintenance companies. And it cares about maintaining a long-term happy relationship with every one of those clients. For the Birmingham Hippodrome alone it has carried out filter changes and disposal for the last three years. “We can provide a total service,” promises David. “There’s no one turning up changing the filters and leaving the dirties sitting in a plant room. “We are licensed by the Environment Agency to transfer and carry waste and so we take them away and issue a waste transfer notice to confirm that all legislation with regard to safe disposal has been complied with.”
David Hicks and Ross Hayward.
On the supply side, Filter Fit stocks a range of standard size pleated panels (although non-standard sizes are obtainable), bag filters in varying sizes, fan belts, glass panels and media pads and its central geographical location proves perfect for guaranteeing next-day delivery. “If there is something that you require urgently, there will always be somebody at the end of the phone when you call our number,” insists David. “Many times we have managed to help those who have not been able to give us any prior notice and it is because of this service that people come back to us again and again.” A top-class and efficient service requiring minimal effort on the part of the customer, and a commitment to keeping down the cost of replacement filters, while maintaining high-quality products and advice such as product development - a star in the filtration firmament indeed.
For further information or to make an enquiry about Filter Fit’s products and services, visit www.filterfit.co.uk or telephone 01386 833 330.
Safety is paramount and underlining Filter Fit's commitment to providing safe working environments for staff and public, is its recently-awarded accreditation with CHAS (Contractors Health and Safety Scheme), which now runs along its Safe Contractors Accreditation. $!

CAR park operators throughout the country are turning to a Midlands business to ensure they have the very best for making their sites run successfully. Complete Car Park Solutions, (CCPS) in Rugeley, Staffordshire, is a one-stop shop for providing the key equipment and is committed to working closely with customers to ensure they get exactly what each individual site needs. Automatic parking barriers, telescopic posts, security posts, speed bumps, height restriction barriers, crowd barriers and security bollards are manufactured to the highest of industry standards while always remaining affordable. And since it moved to its current premises on the Redbrook Lane Industrial Estate three years ago, it’s been able to offer even more - the manufacture of sports equipment and powder coating. “We moved in to a base where the previous manufacturing setup did sports equipment so we took on the work,” explains company director Julian Parkes. “Today we produce netball, badminton, five-a-side football posts and all sports equipment storage. “The premises also already had a powder coating oven and that was another thing we could do because most of our products are powder coated. “Now we powder coat our products in-house, instead of subcontracting the work, and provide that service to local manufacturers and clients from as far afield as Wales and Blackburn.” The expert team of nine is responsible for a large range of carparking equipment that is used by companies across the UK, including Toyota, Land Rover and Jaguar.
transmitters while its regular barriers are a great alternative, with their ability to be positioned anywhere in a car park and directly fitted to a surface. “Robust and hardwearing, standard barriers offer a lightweight and clean operation,” assures Julian. “We also have a variety of manual access gates that are suitable for commercial and domestic parking places.” CCPS offers security bollards in a variety of styles for a wide range of uses and, as with every product it manufactures, can provide expert advice on choosing the appropriate security posts and bollards. When it comes to safety, CCPS can help, too, providing PVC durable and hard-wearing speed ramps in a range of sizes to suit all types of public and private car parks, commercial and industrial car parks and, being easily removed and customised to run cables through the centre, are perfect for road works, temporary traffic lights, water supply and power generators at large events. Combined with the crowd barriers and a full range of helpful accessories to improve the car park environment, such as bicycle racks, it’s easy to see why operators choose CCPS for their complete car parking one-stop shop. “We pride ourselves on excellent customer service and are happy to help you make the right choice to suit your needs,” says Julian.
