Vote of confidence Developments in the recent months have demonstrated the efficacy of the growth model that Ras Al Khaimah has adopted. The emirate stands out as an island of stability in a sea of uncertainty that has seen the symbols of progress in the modern era go down under, wrecked by the devastation caused by the global financial tsunami. Firmly footed on the ground of realities, Ras Al Khaimh had steered clear of all exuberance and stayed put with its own model that drew strength from its own resources and the ethos and culture of the local population. In sharp contrast to the trouble all around, Ras Al Khaimah has, in fact, achieved steady progress in various parameters of growth in recent times, although the emirate can in no way be expected to be immune to the global crisis. RAKIA, which is a key driver of the emirate’s growth engine, has reported an increase in the number of companies and businesses coming to set up shop there. Ras Al Khaimah is undoubtedly among the least affected investment destinations. It is quite significant that the RAK government has successfully closed its landmark Dh1.4 billion sukuk issue, which is a strong endorsement in the credit story of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. This has happened at a time when many prospective issuers had postponed their plans in view of the adverse market conditions. Perhaps capping all this success is the veritable public relations coup that the emirate has staged by winning the mandate to hold the prestigious America’s Cup, marking a first for the top-notch event in its entire history, for being held in the Middle East. It is indeed a befitting tribute to the vision of the rulers of the emirate and its government.

Sailing into history
Perfect weather and great sailing conditions have earned RAK the venue for hosting the 33rd America’s Cup

With
a rich heritage and tradition dating back to 1851, the America’s Cup is often called the oldest trophy in sport. When the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896, the America’s Cup was already 45 years old. Now, for the first time ever, the event will be held in RAK on February 8, 2010. Soon, the waters of the Al Hamra lagoon at RAK will be a sea of activity when the teams arrive for practice. The event will be staged at the Al Hamra Village, where an island is being constructed to house the teams and launch the boats. If you are wondering how RAK bagged the venue among contenders like Brazil, Thailand, Uruguay, Spain, northern Italy and Greece, it is largely to do with the rules of the game. The venue for the competition, which has been running since 1851, is chosen by the reigning champion. The recent dominance of the Swiss Alinghi team has meant selecting neutral venues and RAK was its choice. According to Fred Mayer, the vice-commodore of the Societe Nautique de Genève, the yacht club behind the Alinghi team, the last winner, the UAE has an excellent record in preparing and hosting major international sporting events. “This is a venue that offers perfect weather and great sailing conditions for a match in February; the authorities have shown tremendous interest in and support for hosting the America’s Cup, and the country has experience in organising first-class sporting events
In 1851, a radical looking schooner ghosted out of the afternoon mist and swiftly sailed past the Royal Yacht stationed in the Solent, between the Isle of Wight and the south coast of England, on an afternoon when Queen Victoria was watching a sailing race. As the schooner, named America, passed the Royal Yacht in first position, and saluted by dipping its ensign three times, Queen Victoria asked one of her attendants to tell her who was in second place. “Your Majesty, there is no second,” came the reply. That phrase, just four words, is still the best description of the America’s Cup, and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence. That day in August, 1851, the yacht America, representing the young New York Yacht Club, would go on to beat the best the British could offer and win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Guinea Cup.This was more than simply a boat race however, as it symbolised a great victory for the new world over the old, a triumph that unseated Great Britain as the world’s undisputed maritime power. such as ATP tennis, PGA golf and Formula One,” he states. Brad Butterworth, Alinghi’s skipper, states that the Arabian Gulf offers a safer and more reliable setting for the competition because, in the winter months in Valencia, the wind is often so strong that the boats could capsize. RAK on the other hand, he feels, has a great building sea breeze during the day, similar to Mediterranean conditions in the summer, making it good for these boats and safe for all concerned. Alinghi is a coined name of the syndicate set up by Ernesto Bertarelli, the Swiss – Italian entrepreneur (who was ranked 52 in an annual ranking of the world’s wealthiest people by Forbes magazine), to challenge for the America’s Cup. Bertarelli had raced several smaller yachts named Alinghi previously, but 2003 was his first attempt at the America’s Cup that he successfully challenged for and won in Auckland, New Zealand. Alinghi is an international team of over 120 people, based in Switzerland, and carrying the colours of its yacht club, the Société
Nautique de Genève, and counts 21 nationalities on its team. The announcement was welcomed by HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, who said he was proud the emirate could further enhance the UAE’s reputation for hosting major international sporting events. “It is a great moment for us to host the America’s Cup here,” he said. “It is a reflection on what we have achieved in terms of

The news was greeted with enthusiasm by the local sailing fraternity, visitors and residents. The America’s Cup is a fast race that promises to give UAE another sailing destination and put RAK on the world map of sport, bringing international recognition to it and help showcase it as a tourist destination. INTERVIEW
Swissness Gerhard Brugger, the Swiss Consul General to the UAE, an adventure sports enthusiast himself, is awaiting the 33rd America’s Cup, which he feels, is prestigious both to the UAE and Switzerland Manju Ramanan Gerhard Brugger, the Swiss Consul General
Tell us about the 33rd America’s cup frenzy that is catching up in the UAE? To have a global event like the America’s Cup being hosted in the career of a diplomat is extremely important. It is important for Alinghi - the Swiss team, to the general image of Switzerland, to the UAE, and to Ras Al Khaimah. The global event will garner world attention to RAK and it will soon step out of the shadows of its more prominent neighbours to being an important destination of its own. The event has generated a lot of interest among the people of the UAE and the Swiss community, in particular, that works across a variety of sectors, including banking, hospitality, aviation, retail and distribution. RAK is being modelled on Switzerland, especially in its approach to the hospitality industry? Comment. There are similarities and differences between RAK and Switzerland. While RAK has access to the seas and has been into maritime activity for business and pleasure, Switzerland might not have a coastline but has several lakes and people are fond of sailing. Switzerland has its mountains and the snow and RAK has been developing its mountain resorts, beach hotels, and
There There are approximately approximately 1,700 1700 Swiss people people in Swiss in UAE, and most UAE, most of of them are specialised them specialised professionals professionals spas etc – all of which attract Swiss tourists towards it. RAK also has nature, flora and fauna and plenty of natural assets, and is well recognised as a tourist spot. An average tourist from Europe looks for sunny spaces, a good swim, peace and quiet, good food and good hospitality, all available aplenty in RAK. Why does RAK attract a number of Swiss companies? Offers at RAK Free Zone companies are cost-effective and provide faster and easier services to investors. RAKIA has promoted their industrial zones quite well with their efficient and professional services. And when a couple of companies set base in RAK and find it beneficial to them, the others come too. In fact, now The
University of Lausanne has a chapter in RAK, a fact well-known and well received in Switzerland too. What is the Swiss uniqueness that is now being sought after in the UAE? The Swiss are limited in number as a community in the UAE (there are approximately 1,700 Swiss people in the UAE), and most of them are specialised professionals. Swiss products are wellknown in the market, are of intensive quality, and hence, expensive. Most of the Swiss products focus on reliability and building a long-term relationship in the market. The good thing is that they have not rested on past laurels and have regularly innovated on their products. In the 1970s, Switzerland’s famous watch industry faced the onslaught of Japanese technology represented by Seiko and Citizen and there was a climate wherein our traditional clock-making industry would have suffered immensely. But constant innovation and a thorough market analysis helped it survive and excel. Today Swiss watches stand for appeal, brand and emotions as well. The same can be said about chocolates. Swiss chocolates too are constantly innovating, marrying the old with the new in certain products while retaining the sense of the old in some.

INTERVIEW
Navigating Luxury An adventure that began in 1973, Sayer Yachts started off by making small boats under an American licence. Over the years, they moved on to the luxury segment and now, manufacture their own models of speed boats. We spoke to Patrick Van Der Elst, Managing Partner and Yacht Designer, SAYER YACHTS
12
What are the unique features of SAYER YACHTS? We produce yachts for connoisseurs and discerning customers. This segment is niche and has a requirement of customised vessels of high quality to suit their lifestyle and routes of navigation. We emphasise on quality as our priority and do not believe in the policy of mass production. Our yachts are exclusive and of high-end quality. We manufacture our own models of speed boats and our racing team has won several European championships in the offshore categories. Following the demand for our loyal customers, our boats are manufactured in different plants under different names. Now, we have reached the size of 34m (110’). What are your plans at promoting your products at the 33rd America’s Cup? RAK is a sea-faring emirate and it is indeed prestigious that an event of the calibre of America’s Cup is being held there in February 2010. It is a great opportunity for us to showcase as well as promote our products there. Our first yacht, manufactured in our new factory in RAK, will be part of the event and will be available to the organising committee,
prestigious guests and VIP attendees. Why did you choose to have a base in Ras Al Khaimah? About 80 per cent of our production is exported, and RAK’s Al Hamra Free Zone is conveniently located to transport freight. The zone has close Patrick Van Der Elst, Managing Partner & Yacht Designer proximity to the sea and is located next to world, mainly from the GCC, Europe and of the Al Jazeera Port, that has facilities for late India. yachts’ launching. INFRASTRUCTURE
Verve to Serve RAKIA adds to its repertoire a number of facilities in its free zones that will benefit the growing body of companies under its umbrella
Investment
in infrastructure facilities is imperative to growth. By upgrading itself to suit the dynamic requirements of its investors,
RAKIA has attracted about 2,065 investors to the emirate in a short spell of time. Apart from awarding power-sufficiency and other facilities to its free zones, it has other
provisions like labour accommodation, flexi-offices, warehouses, commercial centres and residential quarters as well. Here’s a run through. An eagle’s eyeview of Al Hamra development
14
Al Hamra Industrial Park The RAKIA industrial park at Al Hamra consists of free zones and non–free zones with a total area of 4.72 million sqm, completely leased out. While the free zone at Al Hamra comprising a total area of 1.89 million sqm, has been leased out to about 114 companies out of which 89 per cent are in manufacturing, the non-free zone (Industrial zone) Phase-I, II, Extension Zone and Ceramic zone comprise a total area of 2.83 million sqm, and have been leased out to 94 companies with 90 per cent in manufacturing.
Al Ghail Industrial Park The Al Ghail Industrial Park, spans 24.2 million sqm of area of which 3.7 million sqm is free zone, while the rest is a non-free zone. You could take a long-term lease on yearly renewal with competitive rates, benefit from separate power plants for the industrial parks; have the option to choose free zone and non-free zone areas that allow for labour accommodation in the plant premises etc. The area is being developed as a self contained industrial park with warehousing facilities, common labour accommodation, commercial centres and public utilities. The zone is ideal for manufacturing units such as industrial products (mechanical, electrical, electronics), plastics and rubber products,
food processing units, consumer durables and non durables, chemical and allied products, drugs and pharmaceuticals, packaging, garments, building material, construction chemicals etc.
Roads, Telephones, Internet Roads within the free zone and industrial area are under construction in full swing. With support from Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA), the emirate’s telephone company, Etisalat, shall lay its most modern triple play optical fibre cable network which will soon enable same lines to be used for triple play services viz. telephone; internet and television network.
Sewerage Special attention has been paid to implement eco-friendly infrastructural projects; the decision to execute the vacuum sewerage system is one of them. The network comprises 1.2 mld sewage treatment plant based on biological treatment processes. Vacuum stations have already been installed and commissioned in the Al Hamra Industrial Park. A similar facility will be part of the Al Ghail Industrial Park shortly.
Amenity Centre A “state-of-the-art” G+1+12 storeyed twin tower office complex has been
constructed, in the Jazeera- Al Hamra area. While the ground floor will comprise a commercial complex, the other floors will be leased out to offices. The complex will also house all the associated government offices like Civil Defence, Immigration, and RAK Police etc to offer complete and comprehensive services under one roof. With a total floor area of approximately 29,000 sqm, the centre is meant for RAKIA registered companies engaged in manufacturing and commercial activities like trading, consultancy, professional services etc. The centre provides over 300 commercial and office spaces ranging from 492 sqm to 30 sqm and is centrally located amid government offices and a health centre. It shall also have a bank, ATMs, commercial area and a food court. The centre also has unfurnished office space with central air conditioning and adequate car parking space within the building premises.
Flexi Offices RAKIA offers flexi offices on hire basis. These offices offer fully equipped space for short-term usage. There are no long-term lease requirements and no large capital costs. One can start running business immediately, with all the modern office support that one needs like broadband internet, telephone, fax etc.
RAKIA is adding a host of facilities to its existing infrastructure
15 3
Warehousing Complex Warehouse complexes (nine in the free zone and 10 in the industrial zone near RAK Ceramic factory) has been master planned adjoining RAK Ceramics complex and being constructed in phases. Some of its salient features are - pre-built facilities suitable for storage and light industrial activities - for instance assembly unit, packaging, workshop facilities, service centres, etc. These warehouses are located in the Jazeera-Al Hamra area and Khor port. The warehouse complex has both free zones and non-free zone options available and are modular in design. That enables the client to take multiple slots and accordingly build partition walls. Clients can also build offices within the warehouse space with design approved by RAKIA, Each slot will have 15kw connections. For additional load needs, special permission is required. There is adequate space between warehouses for trailers and trucks to manoeuvre, adequate car parking space within the warehouse complex. There is a facility for common toilets. Centrally located, the complex has the RAKIA Health Centre and Al Hamra shopping mall nearby.
Labour Camp
16
Two labour camps have been constructed and occupied by workers. However construction in phases is underway, to build modern labour camps to accommodate workers working in RAKIA industrial parks. Some of the salient features are as follows – it is located in the JazeeraAl Hamra area and has 48 rooms in each
building, the size of each room being 30 sqm. Each room is unfurnished and fitted with window AC, 24 hours security and electric supply and can accommodate eight persons. It has a restaurant nearby and is centrally located with the RAKIA Health Centre and Al Hamra shopping nearby. It has common toilets and washrooms.
Commercial Centres and Studio Flats Construction is underway in phases to build studio flats for people working in the RAKIA industrial parks. While the ground floor consists of a commercial centre, the first floor is occupied by studio flats. It is located in the Jazeera- Al Hamra area, and has 10 slots for commercial purposes and 164 slots for studios. Each slot of the commercial centre is of approximately 110 sqm area and the area of each studio flat is approx 33 sqm. The unfurnished flats are fitted with split AC and have 24 hours security and power supply.
Residential Complex A massive residential complex is being built next in the Al Hamra region to solve the accommodation shortage problem being experienced by the investors. It will comprise a total of 30 15-storeyed complexes with studios and 1-2-3 bedroom apartments and shopping malls, large parking areas etc. The total investment outlay for this project is Dh1 billion. Phase 1 is expected to be
completed in 12-24 months time.
Health Clinic As part of the master plan, RAKIA is setting up a state-of-the-art integrated healthcare centre near the Amenity Centre complex. The construction of the facility has already been completed. This centre has been purpose-built to provide healthcare facilities for the growing needs of patients in this region, and will operate on a Public- Private- Partnership (PPP) basis.
RAKIA Power Plants
As part of the greater strategy in providing power security to investors, RAKIA has been promoting and setting up world-class state-of-the-art power plants. RAKIA has set up its own power generating units to fuel industrial growth and become independent in sovereign power generation.
Al Hamra Power RAKIA owns and operates this power plant with a captive capacity of 35MW for Al Jazeera Al Hamra Area. This gasbased power plant has already been commissioned.
Al Ghail Power This plant is a wholly-owned subsidiary of RAKIA which has been recently commissioned for the Al Ghail Area with a firm capacity of 65MW. The gas turbine power plant has a distribution network at 11kv level up to consumer battery limit at Al Ghail Industrial Park.
UTILITIES
18
Empowered With two operational power plants, Al Hamra–1 and Al Ghail, RAKIA free zones have achieved self-sufficiency in power
It
is success achieved in a short spell of time. Early last year, RAKIA identified that FEWA alone cannot meet Ras Al Khaimah’s needs in the energy sector due to the emirate’s vast developments. Immediately, a plan for building power plants was chalked out. Eventually, three power plants were commissioned - two at Al Hamra and one at Al Ghail. The Al Hamra Free Zone covers an areas of 1.95 million
square metres and the Al Ghail Industrial Park spans 21 million square metres. Today, Ras Al Khaimah’s new 84megawatt Al Ghail Power Plant has started commercial production and meets the energy needs of companies located at the Al Ghail Industrial Park. The gasbased power plant, set up by RAKIA, fully commissions the 45-megawatt open cycle gas-fired power plant, Al Hamra-1, which
supplies power to Al Hamra Industrial Zone area. The two new power plants were set up with a total investment of around $130 million. The two plants contribute an additional 130MW capacity to the emirate and are on track to meet its promise of providing reliable power and water availability to all investors. While FEWA in RAK has a 550-megawatt capacity, power plants at
RAKIA have now managed 250 megawatts of power, all within a year. That is shouldering nearly 50 per cent of the total power consumed. N Zakkir Hussain, Advisor, Power and Water Projects, RAKIA, states that the tendering process for the 120MW Al Hamra2 power plant is in the final stages, and the plant will be set up soon. “The feasibility study for a 600MW first phase of the coalfired Mina Saqr power plant is also nearing completion. The Mina Saqr plant can be developed to have a maximum capacity of 3000MW, based on the emirate’s future power requirements,” he adds.
19
Investment in minerals The Government of Ras Al Khaimah, through RAK Minerals and Metals Investments (RMMI), has made substantial investments in coal infrastructure in Indonesia to secure coal supplies to power the emirate’s energy needs. Owing to its self-sufficiency in power, the RAKIA free zones have attracted over 2,000 companies during the past three years.

Slim is in RAK Ceramics launches RAKSLIM, a trim range of thin-size tiles
The
22
new brand of 4.5mm tiles sets new industry standards in thickness, strength, flexibility, costs and ease of use. The line will initially be offered in some models of Gres Porcellanato tiles, including the Lounge Series and the New Port Series. With a minimum breaking strength of 700N and a minimum modulus of rupture of 40N/mm2, which are unprecedented for thin-size tiles in the market, it cuts down nearly half of the weight of conventional tiling, resulting in a significant reduction of dead load on building structures and subsequently reducing structure costs. According to Dr Khater Massaad, CEO, RAK Ceramics, “RAKSLIM represents a new technological milestone for RAK Ceramics, perfected after several months of trials, experiments and technical research. This new brand of thin-size tiles is the future of ceramic tiling, which will strengthen RAK Ceramics’ reputation as a leading innovator and trendsetter in the global market. “Moreover, it complements our
extensive product range that focuses on variety, ready availability and durability, which translates into enhanced service and product value for our distributors, residential and commercial clients, and other customers,” he says. The product will initially be offered in 30x60-centimetre sizes, while RAK Ceramics will later on manufacture larger sizes and a wider range of models. With its remarkable thickness, RAKSLIM offers significant savings in transport costs as, nearly twice as many tiles can be shipped in a container compared with regular-size tiles. They are easy to cut, drill, handle and install, and offer greater flexibility for usage in any existing flat surface at home or in commercial premises. The new tile brand is also ideal for renovation of existing floors as its thickness helps avoid costs of removal of existing floor coverings. RAK Ceramics exports its innovative products and designs in ceramic tiles,
Gres Porcellanato and sanitaryware to over 135 countries, targeting architects, project developers and retail customers. The company offers a perfect blend of technical finesse and aesthetics through 6,000 designs in ceramic tiles, Gres Porcellanato, and several models in sanitaryware.

RAKIA RERA established Real estate watchdog to oversee strict implementation of the emirate’s escrow account law for RAKIA-supervised freehold projects
The
24
recent establishment of RAKIA Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA), by an Emiri Decree, has created a new layer of protection for real estate investors in Ras Al Khaimah. The agency will oversee the implementation of the escrow account law for freehold projects under RAKIA. Several property developers have already registered their projects with RAKIA RERA, which now monitors developments with a collective value of Dh6 billion. Developers can register with the body when the project’s concept design has been approved. This will allow them to open an escrow account and start selling properties. RAKIA RERA will also oversee the proper conduct of construction by sending out a team of engineers to inspect projects and make sure that the emirate’s construction policy and the key points in the contract are strictly followed. Eng. Su(kuk)cess Story

The successful completion of RAK Government’s $2 billion Sukuk Programme validates Ras Al Khaimah’s credit story and its strategic importance to the UAE. The RAK Government completed the formal documentation signing for its landmark $400m Sukuk issue, with Standard Chartered Bank, BNP Paribas and Liquidity House acting as joint book runners. This issuance is both the first US dollar Sukuk issued by a sovereign under a programme and by an emirate in the UAE. This is the second issuance under the government’s $2bn Sukuk Programme. The first issuance was a Dh1bn Sukuk issue in May 2008 in which Standard Chartered Bank acted as sole arranger and sole book runner. At the signing ceremony, HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah expressed his happiness with the strong investor response to the Sukuk issue, which serves as an indication of the RAK government’s continued credibility with the international investor community. He thanked both Standard Chartered Bank and BNP Paribas for the integral role they played towards the success of this welldistributed issue “which will establish a liquid benchmark for the government in the US dollar markets.” The timing of the government’s
second foray into the international capital markets was critical. It took place against the back-drop of positive investor sentiments towards high-grade government issuers and a scarcity of US dollar Sukuk paper in the international capital markets. Shayne Nelson, Regional Chief Executive, Standard Chartered MENA commented, “‘The Government of Ras Al Khaimah has a strong strategic vision and plan for their esteemed emirate and the success of this Sukuk issuance reaffirms the government’s leadership, commitment and capabilities. The Sukuk is a key milestone not only in the continued development of Ras Al Khaimah but also in the evolution of Islamic Banking”. Based on the strong investor response received during the roadshows, the government announced its intentions for a second issuance under its Sukuk Programme, releasing a price whisper in
the 8% to 8.5% area for a 5-year issuance on July 14. This was followed by the release of official price guidance of 8% - 8.25% for a target issue size of $300m $500m on July 14. The order book grew rapidly to over $1.65bn with over 120 investors, despite being open for only 24 hours in the Middle East and Asia and only six hours in Europe. The transaction received strong interest from investors across the regional markets, with final allocations of Middle East 47%, Asia 34% and Europe 19%. A focussed marketing strategy and effective communication of the government’s credit story during the roadshow enabled the $400m 5Y Sukuk issue to be priced at the lowest end of the official price guidance - 8% p.a.

Wealth of the Mountains The rugged Hajjar Mountains that stretch from Ras Al Khaimah to Fujairah and Oman have played a very important role in the growth and progress of the emirate that is not been blessed with oil or gas. Laden with rich deposits of limestone and other minerals apart from rocks, the wealth of the mountains are an integral part of RAK’s economy
INDUSTRIOUS RAK Wealth of the mountains
Limestone in the limelight The rich deposits of limestone from the Hajjar mountains of Ras Al Khaimah have been integral to its growth. Naser Bustami, Group General Manager, Stevin Rock LLC, Ras Al Khaimah Rock Company and Saqr Port Authority, speaks to RAK Today on the merits of the Hajjar
34
The
Hajjar Mountains of Ras Al Khaimah have been a blessing to the emirate. Since RAK does not have oil resources, the mountains, composed of two types of rocks sedimentary rocks and igneous rocks, have been a rich source of raw material for the various industries dotting its belt. While the rocks towards the side of the Saqr Port are sedimentary rocks and rich in limestone, the southern part of the Hajjar mountains near Fujairah are composed of igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are harder and have an abrasive quality about them, hence used in road and airport tarmacs while ceramics, stone and sedimentary rocks are ideal for the cement industry. A large number of cement industries are present in the area, namely Union Cement, Pioneer Cement, Star Cement, GCC White Cement and RAK Cement. About 60 per cent of the total cement production in the UAE, takes places in RAK. In the Middle East, RAK would rank among the top five, while UAE ranks third. The second most important aspect of the mountains are
aggregates or crushed gravel that is widely used in the construction industry as well as the steel industry. In fact, the chemical composition of the rocks available in RAK are of the best quality. It is a natural wealth we have. The third most important industry, the mountains cater to coastal defence blocks or breakwaters that are commonly used in land reclamation projects, to arrest sea invasion and in the steel industry. Apart from these three uses, limestone from the Hajjar is also used for various purposes. It is an important ingredient in the paint industry; fine limestone is used in the production of toothpaste, asphalt and medicine too. Limestone powder is also used in the manufacturing of polybrene fibre as well as fertilisers and mixed in chicken feed since it is calcium rich. The vision for utilising and expanding the wealth of the mountains comes from HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah. After he increased the capacities of the quarries and its operations, the region has seen rapid development. For the past 32 years, Stevin Rock LLC had been operational, producing and selling high-grade limestone, Gabbro rock, concrete and asphalt aggregates for the construction markets. But after Sheikh Saud took over, Stevin Rock acquired Ras Al Khaimah Rock Company on 1st October 2007 and became one of the largest quarrying companies in the world, producing more than 56 million tonnes per year. The company
presently owns and operates three quarries located at Khor Khuwair, Al Ghail and Kadra areas. A similar story can be seen in the development of the Union Cement factory that was functional before HH Sheikh Saud took over, but became the largest producer of cement in the region. With development comes infrastructural changes. As quarries and cement companies produce more, the energy and water, needed to run these companies increase too. However, the development of infrastructure along the mountains also has been nearly simultaneous to its expansion. Soon, the area will see a new power plant to combat the shortage of power currently experienced. The six cement plants and Stevin Rock have decided to build their own power plant RAK Power that will generate 300MW of electricity. Talks are on to decide whether the plant would be run by gas, coal or diesel. As of now, diesel appears to be the only reliable source. Along with power
would be the reverse osmosis plant, to supply water to the industries in its belt and the region as well. The mountains have several uses that range from tourism, industry, environment etc. As far as tourism is concerned, the snowing at the Jebel Jais at Mount Al Jais in January 2009 invited a lot of tourist interest. The road leading to Jebel Jais is being built, and already it is possible to drive up to 1,400 metres; the peak is at 1,900 metres. At 1,400 metres, there are plans to build a resort that will have chalets and at 1,800 metres, there are plans for a ski resort. Apart from this, there are plans to built another resort near the RAK airport side since the area has a Meditarranean climate. In addition, the Hajjar mountains award RAK the backdrop of beautiful sceneries. Most people come to RAK to be one with nature, especially when they want to escape from the monotony of concrete jungles. The mountains offer fresh respite, rejuvenation and relaxation.

Wealth of the mountains
Bound to lead “The first and the biggest cement manufacturer in the UAE with the world’s largest kiln, Union Cement Company (UCC) has several firsts to its credit, ” says Mustafa Gorgunel, General Manager, Union Cement Norcem Co.
36
What have been the company’s highlights since 1972 till date, considering that UCC is the first cement company in the region? UCC was set up in 1972 in the Khor Kwair Industrial Area by HH Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE. The production commenced with the first line in 1975 under the management of “Norcem A.S.”, a member of HeidelbergCement Group. The second line started in 1977, followed by the third one in 1979. In 2006, UCC commissioned its milestone “Plant 4”, a 10,000 tonnes per day clinker production kiln that increased its capacity from 1.2 to 4.5 million tonnes per annum. In 2007, cement mills 5 & 6 also contributed to add up the company’s grinding capacity to 4.8 million tonnes per annum, and this made UCC the biggest cement manufacturer in the UAE. Much of it happened after Kiln 4 was opened in 2007 by HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
What are your products and how do they fulfil the cement demand of the region? UCC has a wide range of products, Ordinary Portland Cement, Low, Moderate and High Sulphate Resisting Cement, and its own bulk tanker fleet. In 1980, the Union Cement Norcem Company (UCN), established jointly with Norcem AS of HeidelbergCement Group, marketed and sold American Petroleum Institute (API) certified oil well cement, produced in the UCC plant. UCN’s ‘Norwell’ brand Oil Well Cement has been part of UAE’s oil industry for over 28 years now. Apart from these, UCC fulfils all kinds of cement requirements of the region. Who are your client countries and how is freight transported ? With its proximity to the Saqr Port, UCC has a logistical advantage to serve the markets in the Gulf, Middle East and East Africa. Client countries are Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Pakistan, Kuwait and Yemen. While cement
The Union Cement Company
is transported mainly by roads to the other emirates of the UAE and Qatar, other exports are done by sea. What are the environmental policies you adhere to? UCC obtained its ISO 9000 certification in 1994 as the first cement manufacturer in the Middle East. In 1980, UCC added API Spec Q1 certification, and in 2000, added ISO 14001 certification in line with its dedication to the environment. Recently, the company issued a statement saying that it will invest Dh34 million ($9.26 million) this year on environmental projects. These include covering of its clinker, coal and raw material yards and a new filter for Kiln 3. UCC is implementing the requirements of ISO 14001 certification and takes social responsibility for the employees and population around our plant. Besides, the local government is also keenly seeking strict adherence to environmental requirements.
The Government of Ras Al Khaimah
Saqr Port Authority
The Government of Ras Al Khaimah Saqr Port Authority is ideally situated close to the major shipping lines and the Strait of Hormuz. Saqr Port is located at Khour Kuwair, Ras Al Khaimah’s modern and fast-growing industrial complex. Imports of raw materials to support local industry are efficiently handled and the port also offers a convenient outlet for manufactured materials for the constructions industry, which are exported throughout the Middle East. Saqr Port was built by order of HIS HIGHNESS SHEIKH SAQR BIN MOHAMMED AL QASIMI, SUPREME COUNCIL MEMBER AND RULER OF RAS AL KHAIMAH. Open in 1977, it maintains the UAE’s historical maritime connections. Saqr Port offers modern facilities for the UAE. Importer and for transhipment, traffic to other Gulf countries, India and Pakistan. The country’s excellent road network makes overland transhipment throughout the Middle East a realistic possibility for shippers and importer. Saqr Port is also the closest port to Bander Abbas, for transhipment by sea to Iran. In 2004, KGL PI signed a 21-year concession agreement with the Ras Al Khaimah government to develop and operate the Saqr Port Container Terminal. With a total investment exceeding US$50 million, KGL PI is currently modernizing, developing and improving operations at the container terminal with throughput expected to reach 300,000 TEUS per year in its third year of operations. The geographical position makes it an ideal port for transhipment operations. The Port has a positive approach to transhipment cargo, combining flexible traffic, professional supervision and minimal documentation to assist shippers and consignees alike. Sea/Air cargo through Saqr Port to Ras Al Khaimah Airport, or any other international airport in the UAE, will save a minimum of 24 hours compared to using any other port in UAE. Long-term storage areas are located close to the berths to minimize handling costs. Large ships can discharge in Saqr Port and cargo’s can be reduced to convenient sized shipments for reloading and smaller vessels, to serve ports in the Gulf, India and Pakistan, where severe draft and size limitation are imposed. Distribution and packing centres can be established within the Port at reasonable rates. Saqr Port has eight deep-water berths, each 200-meter long and dredged to 12.2 meters at mean low water spring tide. Two Ro-Ro ramps are available, plus specialized berths for handling bulk cement and aggregate. The Port is well equipped to handle all types of cargo, with mobile cranes, forklifts, trailer and yard hustles. Bunkers supplies of fuel oil, gas oil and blends are available ex-quay at most berths. Vessels bound for the Port should advise their Agent of ETA Saqr Port giving draft, LOA and full cargo details, at least 48 hours prior to arrival. When in range, vessels should call Saqr Port control on VHF channel 14 or 16 for berthing instruction. Pilotage is compulsory. Pilots board in the vicinity of the “Saqr Port Approach Buoy” (R&W Sph.Iso.6 secs in position lat. 26 00.0’N long. 56 02.0’E; chart BA 3174 refers). A safe pilot ladder must be rigged for the pilot to embark. Tugs, Mooring launches and mooring gangs are available. The Harbour and approach channel are dragged to 12.2 meters, although a draft limitation of 12 meters is imposed. Health and Immigration officials board the ship after berthing. Shore leave is normally generated to crews, provided passport or seaman’s books are deposited at the Saqr Port immigration office.

The planned infrastructure will strengthen its competitiveness by allowing economical coal transportation from the resourcerich hinterland of East Kutai Regency in a
scalable and efficient manner,” said Madhu Koneru, Managing Director of RMMI and Vice-Chairman of MEC. The first phase of the development programme will involve the commissioning of a 17 million mt/a coal transportation and handling facility by 2012, while the civil and track work will be completed for a 60 million mt/a capacity. “Developing green field mineral reserves and investing to build infrastructure where there is none, form part of RMMI’s overall long-term strategy. This is done with the objective of securing the power requirements of Ras Al Khaimah as well as mobilising supply for various markets such as Indonesia, India and Japan, Mr. Koneru said. “Infrastructure investments would allow RAK to maintain a high level of cost management and therefore stabilise prices of energy resources in the long-run,” he added.

the campus, the launch of the English language programmes would cater to the learning needs of a diverse student population, believes Raj Nambiar, Director for Administration and International Admissions at the RAK campus. The English Language School at the University of Bolton, RAK Campus, has been set up to help both international and home students meet the entry-level requirements of any British university. The programme will be delivered over a semester, which will then enable students to complete the English Language programme and enter any of the programmes on offer at the University
of Bolton, RAK, from October 2009. The English Language programme will seek to develop the students, English language skills and knowledge, as well as introduce them to the specialist subject areas they have chosen to study at the University of Bolton. In addition, students will develop a range of transferable skills appropriate to studying a degree programme. As with any other University of Bolton, in the RAK Campus offerings, the focus would be on providing quality learning opportunities at an affordable cost, with students receiving further support through merit-based scholarships.
Friedman School of Nutrition opens Tufts
University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science, renowned for the application of scientific research to national and international policy, has opened its doors in Ras Al Khaimah, with the first batch of students who are studying for their Master’s degree in Nutrition. ‘The new programme has been created with an emphasis on the needs of populations in the Gulf and the broader region, and to standards identical to those at our Boston campus,” says Dr. Eileen T. Kennedy, Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. The one-year programme offers a degree identical in stature to the master’s degrees earned at Tufts’ Friedman School in the United States and is taught by the same faculty. Instruction is provided through a ‘hybrid’ learning model, a combination of ten-day residency sessions held three times over the course of one year, and
computer-facilitated lectures and participation, when students work from home in between their residencies in RAK. The programme attracted students from several countries, including Egypt, Morocco and Qatar. Tufts University’s Dr. Lynne Ausman, the Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Professor in International Nutrition, is in Ras Al Khaimah teaching the new students. “Our master’s programme provides a strong foundation in nutrition and nutritional biochemistry, food policy fundamentals, and monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programmes. Graduates are expected to work in government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), in the rapidly expanding corporate service sectors, and with international organisations, including
the Untied Nations’ agencies and regional development organisations,” states Ausman. Students graduating from Ras Al Khaimah will have the option to pursue the Doctorate degree offered by the school in the US. Dr Raj Parikh, CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Education Company (EDRAK), responsible for the development of higher education in the emirate, added that the RAK – Tufts partnership will see the launch of several short courses and certificate programmes for health care professionals as part of Continuing Professional Education in areas of present and growing concern to the region.

competencies and competitive advantages, RAKIA aims to set up the region’s topmost research and information technology hub with EPFL. EPFL is one of the two Ecoles Polytechniques fédérales in Switzerland. Like its sister institution, ETHZ, it has three missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. EPFL along with RAKIA, will set up a research facility that will operate like a technology incubator. Subsequently, these patents will be sold or transferred to other countries or will be used to further growth and development within the country. This model will leverage optimal operating cost which RAK offers in
comparison to other emirates as well as superior standard of living for the researchers and professionals involved in a project of this magnitude. The roadmap for this project suggests setting up of a Swiss Tech Park by 2012 and a subsequent incubation park by 2015 with relevant competencies. The plan by 2016 is to replicate this model in other emerging economies and facilitate transfer of technology. The Swiss Tech Park is a natural Extension of RAKIA’s core competence-managing industrial/ free zones. It is consistent with its vision of developing RAK into an industrial/ technology hub. “A key factor that will

El-Sayed, has been awarded the first Sheikh Saqr Visiting Professor at RAK-CAM. Prof Mostafa is the winner of the 2007 National Medal of Science, United States’ highest scientific honour, and is currently the Julius Brown Chair and Regents Professor at Georgia Tech University, Atlanta. The new research grants would expand the scope of the prestigious ‘Sheikh Saqr Al Qasimi Research Fellowship’ programme which currently supports materials science research in University of Pennsylvania, University of Cambridge,
Virginia Commonwealth University and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore. Calling for concerted action to make advanced scientific research a national and regional priority, Sheikh Saud said: ‘According to the 2003 Arab Human Development Report, investment in research and development (R&D) in the Arab world is less than one-seventh of the world average. Furthermore, the main limitation of the Arab scientific R&D agencies is their lack of capacity to transform research results into investment projects. The underlying gap for this exists either in research plans or in the knowledge, expertise and facilities of these institutions.’ Sheikh Saud said that RAK- CAM is envisioned as a flagship for advanced research in the Middle East and will provide educational and training opportunities for new scientists and engineers at the regional and international
levels; conduct research in support of local industries, develop new business opportunities, and produce new options to ensure energy security and sustainable development. Sheikh Saud stated that “RAK- CAM will embrace interdisciplinary materials science in the broadest sense - from structural materials to advanced electronic materials and biomaterials. Advanced Materials research holds special significance for RAK, as it has a rapidly developing manufacturing sector, accounting for 52 percent of GDP.” He added that development of Advanced Materials and Processes could result in large savings in energy and product life- cycle costs for a large number of industries. Prof Anthony K Cheetham, Chairman of the Advisory Board of RAK- CAM, said that RAK- CAM would also offer 20 new travel grants to students from the region to enable them to attend the IWAM- 2010 conference.

RAK Hospital is a state-of-the-art healthcare facility, jointly set up by the Government of Ras Al Khaimah and ETA Star Healthcare. The RAK Government, under the aegis of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, and Dubaiheadquartered ETA Star Healthcare, set up a 50:50 joint venture to implement the RAK Hospital project. Opened in 2007, the RAK Hospital is a 65-bed multi-specialty private hospital, managed by Sonnenhof Swiss Health (SSH), a leading name in healthcare and hospitality. The strategic tie-up between SSH and ETA Star Healthcare has been established to provide the highest quality in medical and nursing care. The facility has
been designed as a premium healthcare complex by the US-based Ellerbe Becket of Mayo Clinic repute. The hospital provides modern healthcare facilities in a top-of-the-line hospitality environment. It offers a wide range of services in Obstetrics, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Intensive Care, Dermatology, Dentistry, Cosmetology and Physiotherapy. It also has a 24-hour accident and emergency facility. The location of RAK Hospital lends it a natural bounty that complements the advanced facilities it offers. Poised at the tip of the Arabian Gulf, Ras Al Khaimah’s scenic and soothing environs -- comprising fertile
plains, majestic mountains, a rich coastline, and vast golden deserts -- provide a natural and invigorating touch. The RAK Hospital is the only healthcare organisation in the world that has received accreditations from both the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the Swiss Leading Hospitals (SLH), which is based on the standards of European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). With this, the RAK Hospital joins an exclusive group of hospitals worldwide, having passed JCI’s stringent clinical quality standards. JCI is the international arm of the Joint Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organisations (JCAHO). It is the oldest and most prestigious healthcare accreditation process that requires a hospital

to comply with nearly 1,300 measurable elements. The accreditation process involves a thorough evaluation of the healthcare organisation’s performance in areas that most affect patient health and safety. The JCI accreditation was awarded after a rigorous on-site evaluation of the RAK Hospital by an international surveyor team of healthcare experts in the first week of November 2008. The endorsements by the Swiss Leading Hospital (SLH) label today represent a byword for the highest possible individualised patient care, and a relaxing, caring environment. The member hospitals distinguish themselves through first class infrastructure and an unequalled understanding of the standards required. Modelled along the lines of the leading hotels of the world, SLH members operate to the maxim of ‘top medicine, together with first-class hospitality standards’. The well-being of patients is of utmost priority

in all SLH member hospitals, with doctors and nursing staff alike making more time for
each patient. Central to the SLH concept is the optimum synergy between top medical services, first class infrastructure, and the highest possible quality of patient-oriented care. The strict quality concept of Swiss Leading Hospitals is based on the standards of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Business Excellence Framework, and Total Quality Management (TQM), which guarantees very high quality in all areas. The key to acceptance is an extensive quality assessment procedure, during which quality management, the accreditation procedure for doctors, medical care, nursing standards, hotel-style accommodation, and the administrative requirements and infrastructure are tested. The recognition -- both by JCI and SLH – places the RAK Hospital on a high standing, providing quality comprehensive medical services and patient safety. RAK Hospital’s approach to healthcare is holistic, making it a premium quality healthcare destination in the region.
“Patients come the first time to the hospital out of curiosity. For follow-up visits, treatment as inpatient or even for surgical procedures, however, they will only come if there is confidence Dr. Jean Marc Gauer- CEO, RAK Hospital

quality of medical staff, system, policies and procedures. Our numbers prove that ‘Swiss quality’ is being appreciated.”

Green Footprints Development and ecological awareness are inextricably interlinked in RAK

The
wind-swept red sands skirting the Emirates Road towards Ras Al Khaimah offer a delightful array of patterns. Peppered with thick green desert shrubs, occasional trees and camel farms, the expansive space is an idyllic specimen of the Arabesque landscape that is both pristine and refreshing. The road ends in a T, with the desert sands meeting the green seas of the emirate. While island developments,
resorts and sprawling beaches are on left, towards the right is the stretch of the limestone-rich Hajjar Mountains, with some of its higher peaks experiencing snow in the winter months. Endowed with such natural beauty and blessed with rainfall, RAK naturally attracts tourists and travellers, both from within the region, and outside. Unfortunately, with tourism comes the baggage of garbage left by insensitive holidayers.
Fortunately though, the Government of Ras Al Khaimah, recognising its wealth of natural abundance, has laid down strict environmental policies for protecting its trees, mountains, animal/ bird-life, sea-life as well as its people. Its green waters, home to the endangered Green Sea turtles, are protected by the State, so are its Ghaf trees and the Samer trees that are found abundantly in the region. The RAK EPDA (Ras Al Khaimah
Envisioning RAK
Environmental Protection and Development Authority addresses the needs of RAK’s environmental friendly industrial policy. In fact, the EPDA recommends that real estate developers should deal only with rock quarries and crushers that implement the environmental requirements and stick to the Federal Law No 24 for the year 1999 and the emirate’s relative regulations. The authority has, in the past, cancelled the commercial licence of one of the crushers that committed the mistake of severing natural materials off the mountains. For any violation, the authority sends a letter as a first warning. If no action is taken, the authority freezes blasting in the violating quarry or shuts down either part or all operations at the site, depending on the problem, in addition to fines.
Responsible holidaying For holidayers who don’t bat an eyelid before littering, RAK has strict policies that address the issue. In a bid to reform holidayers and to train them to be more responsible, the RAK government has taken requisite action to prevent littering. Boards along the deserts close to RAK state that littering will invite a fine of Dh500. The stretch is a haven for desert sports and games invites a large number of tourists each year.

Saving the Ghaf The endangered Ghaf tree, one of the symbols of the UAE, is found abundantly in Ras Al Khaimah and is under the protection of HH Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE. Ghaf is historically and culturally as valuable as it is ecologically. Groves of Ghaf grow naturally in the desert sands and wide wadis. The tree endures fierce temperatures, searing winds, and high rates of water loss, weathering them all. The Ghaf is considered a solution to desertification.
It stabilises dunes while improving the soil. It propagates itself by providing new shoots from parent root systems. It is also said that the presence of Ghaf in an area indicates that there is water underground. The tree taps water stored deep in the sand, its roots penetrating as deep as 30 metres to access it. Thus, Ghaf is able to withstand very low rainfall and still stay green. Identified with Arab tradition, it is not surprising that Ghaf finds a place in folklore too. What is more, it invites a lot of
birds found in the desert. The desert eagle owl, brown-necked raven, yellow-throated sparrow and long-legged buzzard build their nests in the Ghaf tree. Others nest in holes along the trunk and branches; and many more use the trees as roosts. Flowers, fruits, leaves, bark, branches and roots of Ghaf - all provide resources and habitat for a variety of native fauna and flora, making the tree a keystone species; one that plays such an integral part of the food chain in an ecosystem, that if it disappeared, it
would cause the ultimate extinction of other species in that system.
Protecting Honey The Samar trees that grow in the mountainous regions too are under the protection of the RAK ruler’s court. They are home to bees that collect honey of the Samar’s flowers exclusively. ‘Samar’ (Acacia tortilis) honey has a distinct floral flavour and is harvested in the mountains following an age-old tradition, and is relished by food connoisseurs.
Saving the Green Sea Turtles Ras Al Khaimah’s waters are protected too. In fact, the 20km stretch after the Al Hamra development is home to several families of green sea turtles. The green turtle is one of the oldest species of animal life in the world and is said to have witnessed the evolution and extinction of the dinosaurs. Green turtles, along with hawksbill turtles, are native to the Northern Emirates, and are found abundantly off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah and protected by the Ruler’s Court.

conserving Bird Wealth Ras Al Khaimah’s strategic positioning presents an exciting opportunity to see many birds that are not usually seen in Europe or other parts of the Middle East. The numerous lagoons and wetland areas in Ras Al Khaimah offer very interesting viewing points. Some of these species include Black-Crowned Finch Lark, Hoopoe, Crab Plover and the Greater Flamingo. Ras Al Khaimah’s prime bird watching areas are the mangroves along the creek and the mangrove wetlands and mudflats north of Al Rams and the old Julfar Area, Al Jazirah Khor, Dhayah, Hamraniya fields, Digdaga area, and Wadi Bih. It is worth noting that across the UAE’s diverse landscape of desert, mountains and coastline, there are approximately 400 different species recorded.
Save the World HH Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah issued a local Law No. (2) for setting up the Ras Al Khaimah Environmental Protection
and Development Authority (EPDA-RAK) in March 2007. According to the law, the EPDA -RAK shall be an independent organisation that enjoys the full authority, as well as financial, administrative and technical independence in all its affairs. It shall be the sole authority in charge of environmental issues in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. EPDA-RAK is under the Chairmanship of the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of the emirate. EPDA’s vision is to be an ‘agency of excellence, bringing together stakeholders to promote and balance sustainable economic development with environmental protection in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. It has a mission to assist in the protection and conservation of natural resources through public-private cooperation, to further the sustainable development of Ras Al Khaimah emirate through coordination and implementation of environmental services, protection measures, awareness programmes, biodiversity conservation and scientific research, and to promote a balanced, sustainable relationship between economic development and environmental quality.

The oldest mall in Ras Al Khaimah, the Manar Mall, a project initiated and completed by HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, much before he became the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler, shall soon spend a sum of Dh500m on its renovation and expansion. The eight-year-old mall, that has a crescent shaped roof and has natural light as part of its decor has been built on a single level. After it is revamped and extended, it will be a three-storied structure. Located appropriately near the Corniche, it has to its advantage, the scenic mangroves, mountains and a waterfront. FARM
O said the Ostrich Ras Al Khaimah farms ostriches for the growing demand of exotic meat in the region and the world
58
Once upon a time ostriches were part of the Middle East. The Middle Eastern ostrich or Arabian ostrich (Struthio camelus syriacus) is an extinct subspecies of the ostrich which once lived on the Arabian Peninsula and in the Near East. With the drying-up of the Arabian Peninsula, it disappeared from the Arabian Desert such as the Rub’al-Kha.The bird has had a significant place in Arabic culture. An adult with 11 offspring is featured on the famous prehistoric “Graffiti Rock I” near Riyadh. In Mesopotamia, it was used as a sacrificial animal and featured in artwork, painted on cups and other objects made from ostrich eggs, and were traded as far as Etruria during the Neo-Assyrian period. Sprawled over a few acres, the RAK Ostrich farm belongs to Mohammed Al Mehrizi. Mehrizi, General Director, Ports and Customs, Ras Al Khaimah who started the project three years ago as a hobby but soon realised its business potential. “I first saw the birds in Somalia and bought a few of them home and started breeding them for their eggs and meat. We sold a lot of ostriches to the locals in the form of meat and that meant good business. And so, we

decided to go commercial,” he says. The farm has more than 150 ostriches and most of them are female birds. “We get about 800 eggs at one time and it takes 45 days to incubate the eggs. The mating season is from November to May” he says. In 2008, the RAK Ostrich farm yielded 2000 eggs. Some of them were sold and some, allowed to hatch. “The ostriches can live in Ras Al Khaimah’s weather conditions and since many of them are now born here, they get used to the climate,” he says. Mehrizi states that the ostrich lives for 80 years and nearly every part of its body can be used for either food, decoration or
as accessories. “We are shortly planning a shop that would sell products made from ostriches. Ostrich skin is used to make bags, its bones are used for dentistry, its stomach too is used in human surgery,” he adds. And the eggs are used for decorative purposes. “We have started engravings on the eggs and employed Jordanian artists who specialise in this skill. The images engraved on the eggs are various traditional symbols of the UAE like the falcon, the camel, et al. We set them up in stands and sell them – they make ideal gifts,” he says. Leather bags made out of ostrich skin are sent to Bangkok and Thailand.

CRAFT
Pearls of Yore Ras Al Khaimah based Emirates and Japan Pearl Cultivation and Trading Company is on a mission to revive UAE’s historic tradition of pearling. What’s more, it has for its chief designer, HH Sheikha Fatima Al Qasimi, a member of the royal family 60
It
is a common sight in nearly all museums of the UAE – a pearl diver’s costume, old photographs of the pearling crew on the job, various implements and equipments such as crude leather thimbles, diving outfits, ropes that were tied on the pearl diver’s ankle to lower him and pull him to the depths of the ocean, safety equipment like nose clippers etc. Also seen are various pearl sieves that would separate the big pearls from the tiny ones, mahogany boxes used to store pearls, weight stones in various sizes to weigh them etc. Pearling, one of the chief vocations of
this region, sank into oblivion in the 1920s after Japan introduced cultured pearls into the market. It is said that in the Mumbai market, 1gm of fine Gulf pearls may have had the same approximate value as 320 gms of gold or 7.7kg of silver in 1917. At the turn of the 20th century, the UAE had a reputation for having some of the best natural pearls in the world. By the early 20th century, the pearl industry in the Gulf was at its height, but it declined during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the development of the more affordable cultured pearls in 1921.
of natural pearl shells. Further inspection revealed the suitability of sea conditions, temperature and humidity levels in the area - an encouraging factor that gave a good start to the project that started in September 2005. The area’s untouched and clean environment helped to yield strong and healthy shell fish, unlike the case in Japan – that is now witnessing a slump in the cultured pearls industry. The farm has several thousands of shellfish currently and plans are under way to reach a total capacity of one million shellfish. There are plans to establish an academy to teach local people about the pearl industry, besides talks of setting up the second largest pearl museum in the world, the first being in Japan. Pearling Crew at sea
Pearling in the Arabian waters was an arduous task. Traditionally, a pearl diving dhow carried 10 to 60 divers, or seeb, who spent five months a year searching for pearls. Year after year in May, hundreds of men waved goodbye to their loved ones and headed out to sea with their captain, or nokhatha. In the open water, the naham, or song leader, bolstered the men’s spirits with traditional songs of the sea. The men performed up to ten dives per day, holding their breath for over a minute and a half each time before being pulled to the surface by a rope tied around their waists or ankles. The oysters they retrieved were placed in a basket at the end of the day so that no diver would know whether he had found the biggest pearl. At the end of the diving season, the men returned to port where the nokhatha distributed the wealth among his crew. With the reverberation of the naham’s song in the distance, the return of the divers was met with hopeful anticipation and tears of joy of wives and mothers. The pearls were sold and the pearling crew was given a part of the

money. But now, thanks to the efforts of a few pearl enthusiasts, who want to revive the centuries old tradition, pearling, is seeing a revamp from a country responsible for its downfall. Ras Al Khaimah based Abdulla Rashid Al Suwaidi and Imura Daiji, from Mie Prefecture, Japan are busy reviving a tradition that binds both the countries together. Suwaidi is the CEO of the Emirates and Japan Pearl Cultivation and Trading Company (EJPCTC), a project started not merely to generate money, but to revive an important industry that contributed greatly in shaping the cultural, social and economic heritage of this part of the world. Daiji currently, is the COO and Partner of the company and is based in Ras Al Khaimah looking after the pearl farm. In 2002, Suwaidi and Daiji started investigating the possibility of establishing a pearl oyster farming industry in Al Rams area, located to the north of RAK, and conducted an on-the-spot inspection of the site when they discovered the existence

The emirate’s own royal family member HH Sheikha Fatima Al Qasimi, a jewellery designer by profession, sources pearls for her designs from RAK. The Sheikha, who has a a degree in Business and management from the University of Sharjah, a degree in jewellery Business management from Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai, and a jewellery Design diploma from the International Gemmological Institute, is known for several creative masterpieces, including a circular gold medallion engraved with an Arabic poem named Dream of a Nation for HH Sheikh mohammed bin Rashid Al maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Another of her creations is a chunky ring made of three different coloured stones, blue to signify the sea, brown to signify the mountains and yellow to symbolise the desert –a ring she fondly calls the “RAK ring.” She owns a shop at the Khan murjan section at Wafi City Dubai, called Duwan.

is a cross between an artist’s studio, laboratory and a factory. The Chocolat Atelier of the Swiss International Chocolates LLC, with its trademark Chocolat, embodies the three in a quiet area in the Al Hamra Free Zone. A venture by Daniel Hutmacher, chocolatier and former chef at the Movenpick Hotels in Dubai, the place, that has a meditative ambience about it, creates hand-made Swiss chocolates, with no artificial additives or preserving agents. And true to its tagline, “Passion has a taste,” the place reflects the passion and dedication behind creating chocolate. After a little theory on the making of chocolate and glancing through well-framed photographs of the various

flavours that the Atelier produces, we are handed out hygiene gear that includes plastic caps, overcoats, and shoe- covers after sanitising our hands before being taken on a tour. “Naturally made chocolate is sensitive to odour, dust or sweat and so, we have to be careful,” states Daniel. In a temperature and hygiene controlled area, Daniel and his staff (even the driver and the receptionist make chocolates), create gourmet chocolates. Expect the unexpected here. The place creates interesting flavours that include unusual yet tasteful combinations of flavours with chocolate, raspberry, chilly, candied ginger, crème Brule, chocolate with lemon, orange and cinnamon, coconut and curry, rose water, strawberry

and orange, pistachios with a hint of cardamom, almond, apricots and coffee. The chocolates currently cater to palaces, deluxe hotels, distinguished corporations, airlines, selected retail partners, exclusive weddings, private clients, exclusive boutiques et al. One of their well-known clients is Dubai Duty Free. Ask him why he chose RAK to set up the Chocolat Atelier and he states cost to be a major factor. “By the time I created the company, Dubai was far too expensive and RAKIA offered an easy approach to the complexity,” he states. The raw material that Daniel sources are best quality products from around the world. Between 5 – 10 countries participate in creating one chocolate. But

sourcing happens locally too, especially when it comes to the “Taste of Arabia Line”. And what are those? “To highlight the importance of the local products for our Taste of Arabia Line, we decided to look deeply into the locally available products. Our whole dates and date paste are from Khatt in Ras Al Khaimah, we use locally grown fresh mint for our Souvenir of Morocco chocolate, the halwa is from Ajman before we refine it with Syrian pistachio and Swiss chocolate, the coffee we use for the Coffee and Cardamom is a coffee Arabica from Yemen, the rose water is a local specialty, and so on,” he adds. Daniel’s chocolates are completely hand made, like works of art. Each piece is made meticulously and so is the embellishment on them. We try our hand and realise that it is not as simple as it looks. Ask him if this is the traditional way of making chocolate? “Yes, it is... This is the artisan’s way that respects the products, the temperatures, and gives time to the fillings to settle and not be stressed; therefore it doesn’t become dry and elastic. They are all natural, with no preserving agents and all by hand that keeps the real way alive and showcases the nature of the products, and also enables us to show to clients the origins of the making of chocolates,” he says. But, is it an expensive but healthier, or inexpensive and healthier option? “Hand made chocolates, the way we create them, are healthier and bring the utmost quality of the products to the customer. They are pricey and worth the taste since we take the utmost care in making our chocolates; for example, our products are prepared over a period of three days before being ready to be sold,” he states.

And what about the chocolate’s shelf life and storage conditions? “Chocolates must be stored in a cool and dry place. Cool would mean temperature around 20 Degrees C, dry would mean, not more than 60 per cent humidity; do avoid strong smells, spices and direct sunlight. In these conditions, the shelf life can become 1-2 months in sealed packaging”. How different is Chocolat in terms of its contents from the regular rung of chocolate bars flooding the UAE market? “We use only natural products, only cocoa butter, we do not alter the flavours, do not add sugar, work carefully to create a balance in the various tastes, add no preserving agents and make each chocolate by hand. We do not rush the chocolate making process; therefore the final product is well structured, pleasant in the mouth and very subtle in its various tastes,” he states. As a chocolatier, Daniel aims to educate people about the art and craft of chocolate making. “We have now created a possibility to visit our Atelier Chocolat on request; this is to open our doors to interested people who want to participate directly in the chocolate making process and learn how such a product is made. We do also take every opportunity to showcase our trade, present our products by being available for exhibitions, launchings, shows etc”. As for his signature products, they are the Taste of Arabia series as well as. DOT Line and sugar-free chocolates. “The Taste of Arabia was created by observing our surroundings and the products available to cater to the Arabian taste of our clients; we do believe that we succeeded quite well by taking local tastes and products, transforming them

with our Swiss skills and Swiss chocolates, in order to fit the palate and expectations of the local market. The .DOT Line was created following a challenge through a friend who asked us if we could create something free of sugar. We had already received some requests and then followed suit by studying the possibility and then design the recipe, create it, test and taste it to make this beautiful product we have now. It is suited for diabetics and clients who want to avoid eating chocolates with sugar.” However, excellence cannot be achieved without proper teamwork. “We are a team and whenever someone has an idea, gets a remark from a client that we could do better, we want them to speak up and propose novelties to be developed. We also like to be challenged by clients to create / design new flavours of chocolates, novelties, research to marry new flavours, etc. In fact, we are at all times researching something exciting. Also, all our employees do know how to make chocolates because it is part of our vision to be a company. Everyone can participate and help in the chocolate making,” he states. Does he have any patrons in RAK since it has a strong focus on the hospitality sector? “We do work together with Hilton Beach Resort in RAK; we are also looking forward to create some special tastes and flavours for the upcoming Banyan Tree Al Wadi. Also, we want to offer our services to the Al Hamra Group of Hotels. Together with the hotels, we are also developing and running some exciting events such as tasting for chocoholics; we already performed a malt/chocolate tasting and are now working with the Khatt Spring Hotel to work on the spa opportunities related to chocolates,” he adds.

A venture by RAK Dream Tours, the facility will offer visitors yacht trips, water sports and rides on horse-drawn carriages, as well as a range of dining options. The area has two restaurants housed in historic fort tower- like buildings, set amidst meandering walkways and landscaped gardens complete with water fountains and running streams. The facilities offered include outdoor dining, yacht trips through the creek, water sports, rides on horse- drawn carriages and sight seeing tours onboard doubledecker buses. “We have tried to create a perfect ambience for guests to relax and unwind. The unique location of the project on the Al Qawasim Corniche offers splendid views of the Nakheel City on the other side,” explained RAK Dream Tours CEO Mohammed Yousuf Al Aziz, an Emirati entrepreneur. HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, who inaugurated the event, states that the project is expected to enhance the tourism offerings of the emirate by providing tourists an option
to enjoy the scenic beauty of RAK. ”The RAK Government has identified tourism and infrastructure development as key elements in its development strategy. The emirate is endowed with unique and diverse geographical features and has all that is needed to become a major tourism destination in the region in the
near future,” he states. According to Mohammed Yousuf, the facility would have Arabic and Italian restaurants too. The project’s architecture combines traditional and modern elements with wind- towers (Al Barajeel) featured alongside water gazebos inspired by Japanese landscape design.

Dates getting readied to be sold (Photos from the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah)

It’s a date
there are about 45 varieties of dates cultivated in ras Al Khaimah In
the northern part of the oasis belt, you can see the Lu’lu, Habash, Khis, Khaduri and Anghal varieties, while the southern part has the Fulqa, Anghal, Khaduri and Anwan. The Lu’lu, Habash, Anghal and Khaduri are high quality dates. Date palm cultivation involves intensive working methods that include regular irrigation, transplanting, removing the bast of fibre and stumps of the branches and cutting off the fruitless branches. The palm beds needs fertilising twice a year, and conventionally, it is done with dry sardines. Palm branches are used to build huts (Arish) and the bast is ideal for roof construction. High quality dates are kept in the date store room where
they are laid out on a platform. The weight of the dates presses out the juice which is collected in a bowl, boiled and made into syrup. The dates are then stored in covers of plaited palm leaves before being transported to the market. The early ripening ones (end of May and early June), called the Jidn include the Anghal, Butshibal, Al Salani and Al Khawatir. The third season ripening dates are the Al-khineze, Jash-Falajah, Ain Baqar, Jash Nighal, Al-Ash-hal, Al-Raziz, Al Khalas, Abu Alzuq and Al Khashkar, while the late season ripening ones ( mid August and early October), called the Al Akhir are the best quality ones - Lu’lu, Al- Barhi, Al Gardh, Al Jabri, Al Hilali and Al Khisab.
