On loving myself Dr. Teriya Richmond
I know Valentine’s Day has come and gone but the real question is how do you love yourself? Hopefully your mind hasn’t gone in that direction when we talk about loving ourselves some people call it pleasuring yourself. But what I am talking about is loving yourself and loving your health. For example do you exercise and eat healthy most days of the week or when was the last time you saw your physician. Ladies its recommended we get a yearly mammogram once we are 40 (unless we have a family history). In fact when was the last time you had “down there” examined by a professional? We begrudgingly sometimes get it done but really the Pap smear is done to screen for cervical cancer. Some women believe they shouldn’t have it checked because they haven’t had sex in so long. But as long as you have female parts this should be done every 2-3 years. To the gentlemen I ask the same question. How are you loving yourself? If you are over 50 have you had your prostate checked. Do you eat healthy, exercise and watch your weight. Let’s not forget the colon cancer screening is for everyone age 50 and over and that is recommended for men and women. In general, we have to do better. Start today. Make an appointment with your primary care physician. You can also start cutting your portions and get moving a little bit every day.

Will He Stick Around After You Get Intimate? Not If You Make These Common Mistakes Featured Expert: Christian Carter
If you’re single, are you wondering how you’re going to get yourself back “out there” in the dating pool and meet a good man? Or maybe you’re just not into doing the same kinds of things to meet people you USED to do in the past like bar hop, or go hit the town with your single girlfriends (who aren’t single anymore)? What is a man thinking when it seems like he’s “into you” at first, but soon after you get intimate with him, he “cools off” and starts acting distant? How can you tell if it’s too early to sleep with a man? And what can you do if you’ve ALREADY been physical... and now he has stopped calling for no apparent reason whatsoever? I received an email from a reader who went through this exact situation. I think you’ll feel her pain and see why I wanted to respond to her:
Q. Hi Christian, I’ve just bought your eBook and read the lesson about Thinking in Time Frames where you taught how to let a man wait for sex... but I’ve already made that mistake and slept with him. I want a more serious relationship and I told him afterwards, but as you wrote, he became impatient when we talked, and it made me so frustrated and upset. Now he’s acting distant. So, what should I do to rewire our relationship and make him see my worth? I feel so disappointed about my actions. Christian, please help me. A. I want to give Justine a big hug... but then a hard dose of REALITY. Here’s something you never ever want to forget. It’s the real truth about how most men think when it comes to getting physical and dating in casual and uncommitted relationships... Ready?
Just because a man has sex with a woman, it doesn’t mean that he’s spent even a second of his time deciding whether or not he wants to be with her or have a relationship in the future. In other words... a man’s not going to ever “see your worth” just because you’ve slept with him. And more to the point, it is NOT the physical attraction a man feels for a woman, and getting close to her physically, that makes a man really “feel it” for you and want more. Truth: For A Man, Physical Intimacy Does Not Equal Relationship You need to think that sleeping together and having a relationship are two completely different things that have nothing to do with one another. What makes a man “see your worth” and end up feeling so strongly for you that he wants a real relationship is
COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE | 11
something other than PHYSICAL desire and ATTRACTION.
Common Mistakes Women Make When It Comes To Sex
get it, and is a player for not being ready for a relationship.
Here’s the thing... I don’t know if you see this, but you’ve moved on to wanting “something serious” right after you and he slept together, thinking that sex of course means there should be a relationship and he should feel the same way about you. Not true.
Here are a few of the mistakes women make that get them into tough situations like yours: »» Not saying anything about what it means for you to share yourself with him because you keep telling yourself that he feels the same way you do... and you assume he wants a relationship because he wants to sleep with you. »» Not saying anything about your feelings or about wanting a relationship because you thought it might “weird him out” or make it awkward. »» Not knowing exactly how you feel and what sleeping with him will mean to you until AFTER you sleep with him and a whole rush of feelings hits you like a tidal wave.
Unfortunately, this is the exact kind of thinking that makes it so frustrating and difficult for some women to figure out how to move from just dating a guy to becoming physical and starting an exclusive, committed relationship... but rest assured, you’re in good company.
As I’ve said before, and it bears repeating, the decision to sleep with a woman often has NOTHING to do with whether a man has decided that he wants to “date” you more seriously. Being Clear About What It Means... Before it Happens Let me ask you... Were you upfront and honest about what you were looking for before you slept with him? Did you say to him, “If we sleep together, I’m going to want a relationship.” Or... “I only sleep with a man if he already values me and sees me for the amazing woman that I am.” My guess is that you probably did what lots of women do in the “casual dating” situation when it comes to becoming intimate with a man: You weren’t clear on whether you were in it for the fun and connection of it all with him or for something more “serious.” You thought the act of sex alone would speak for itself.
If you’re like lots of women, you’ve been “caught up” in that moment and ended up sleeping with a man you weren’t in a relationship with, thinking that you’re ok with it... and that it will be a good thing. But then your true feelings snuck up on you and you started to freak out and feel awful when you saw that the man you shared yourself with wasn’t on the same page (wanting a relationship).
If you’ve ever felt hurt because you became physical with a man and he ended up not having an interest in dating or starting a relationship, then odds are you can look back and see that one or more of the above scenarios was at play.
You created EXPECTATIONS from the situation that he had no part in deciding about or even discussing, and now he’s freaked because you’re confronting him with what YOU feel and what he SHOULD want, when he hasn’t even figured that out for himself yet (which leaves him wondering how he’s going to back peddle out of this one).
Of course, it doesn’t seem like it’s you who is making a mistake in these situations. It feels like THE MAN you’re with is the one who obviously doesn’t
In the final analysis, communication is always key. Be up-front about your expectations, if he can’t adjust then simply move on! Know your worth ladies!

THE SIGNATURE WAIST TRAINING CORSET
Some of today’s hottest celebrities use waist training corsets to shape and maintain a shapely waistline!
Our signature corsets are assembled in Colombia by artisans that have crafted fine corsets and girdles for generations. We suggest choosing a size based on height, weight, bust measurement, and waist measurement. Our signature corsets have two functions: They cinch the waist producing immediate noticible results. Secondly, when used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and recommended use, they will aid in shaping the waistline. CHOICE OF LATEX OR NYLON Use caution in sizing. Do not try to size yourself too small. These are compression garments; wearing one too tight can result in light-headedness, dizziness, and damage to internal organs. Caring for your waist training corset: wash by hand in warm water and allow to dry naturally. DO NOT USE THE DRYER. Use of a heat dryer will destoy the integrity of the garment. Recommended use: Skin must remain moisturized. We strongly recommend the use of our slimming cream in conjunction with our corset. We also recommend a natural shea or coco butter moisturizer. Corsets can be worn under the clothing or over a camisole or undershirt if wearing while exercising. COVER STORY
HOUSTON
ENTERTAINMENT FIXTURE J Mac AKA James Garrett J Mac AKA James Garrett has been a fixture in Houston’s music, radio and hip hop scene for more than a decade. As an entertainer, comedian, musician and award-winning radio personality J Mac is expanding his reach. He’s been a fixture on Houston’s airwaves for nearly two decades, first at KMJQ and now as a key player on the highly-rated Madd Hatta Morning Show at KBXX. Behind the smile and jokes lies the heart of a much deeper, insightful humanitarian, and businessman. J Mac arrived on the set of the Couture Lifestyle Shoot a bit hesitant; but ready to work. When asked about his choices in life and whether or not anything was off limits his reply was that he is very public and open to the experience. J Mac grew up in Conroe TX, and is often referred to as the King of Conroe. Rapper, comedian, producer, philanthropist and above all a businessman, “The

King” got where he is the old-fashioned way, long nights and days in the studio and the streets, sometimes going to bed hungry and often times without pay. He turned opportunity into an amazing career. He wants to make sure others have the same chance, the belief in themselves to make an ordinary life, extraordinary. His daily inspirational quotes and historical facts are encouragement to his followers. When asked if any women influenced his life he shared a bit of information on the two most influential women; his mother and grandmother. Both are deceased, but you don’t have to read or look far into his quotes on Instagram or other social media to feel their influences on his life. J Mac lost his mother to Diabetes. Her loss influenced him to become more aware of diabetes, and he supports many diabetes awareness initiatives. He’s also an avid health enthusiast. His body is fit and he continues to rip the gym every week. We asked J Mac (James) a few questions that both is female followers and our readers want to know. Couture Lifestyle: What do you look for in a woman? James: I’m looking for someone who loves her-self, because you can’t truly love someone the way they deserve to be loved until you find and know your own worth. Of course, I would like her to be beautiful, but that’s subjective. What’s more important is that she be a teammate and partner to me. I want someone who looks at me as her rock, but knows deep down inside it is my love for her that keeps me anchored when times are hard. Couture Lifestyle: Is there a “special” lady in your life? James: Unfortunately, with my schedule over the past couple of years I haven’t had much time for dating.
16 | COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
When you’re putting serious work in towards the future it can be hard to find a person who shares your vision or is willing to have a relationship ship play second-fiddle to your career. I would never ask someone to make that sacrifice for me either. It would be something they had to choose for themselves, for love. Couture Lifestyle: Where does J Mac see himself in the future? (Radio, TV, other) James: Everywhere. TV, radio, print, films... maybe even the stage or politics. So many people are afraid to live, or even pursue, their dreams when the opportunity arises. You give me an inch and I will take 20 miles! I won’t limit myself. Too many other people out there want to do that for me. When I was growing up they laughed when I said I would be on the radio, and it gave me doubts. Now when “they” laugh at an idea or goal of mine,it is just another affirmation I’m on the right path. Couture Lifestyle: Marriage/kids possible in the future? James: Anything is possible in the future and you know J Mac loves the kids! The thought of family is a comforting one, and one I’m not opposed to. I just have to meet that special woman... you know the one who makss all that you once thought possible, seem probable, with just one look in your eyes. Couture Lifestyle: Any advice for younger people looking to follow in your footsteps? James: Never doubt your self worth. Follow only until you have enough experience to lead. Find a mentor to guide you to your chosen path. Once you get there help lead another. Love those who love you back and never be afraid of failure.
Couture Lifestyle: What are your thoughts on hip hop culture’s influence on fashion and society? Hip Hop culture is society. It is fashion. 40 years ago it was rock-and-roll that dominated the landscape and determined what people wore, desired and even how they saw themselves. For the past 20 it has been Hip Hop setting the pace -- even when the minorities that dominate Hip Hop are absent. The music, movement and attitude of Hip Hop are omnipresent in nearly every culture and language on the planet. Not only does it influence how people dress and think. It is the music of revolution -- both social and the kind defined by acts of war. Too many people think Hip Hop will die, but it has and will continue to escape obscurity through evolution. In his own words, J Mac (James) is a hustler. “Most people think of the term hustle with a negative connotation. Although you may have been hustled by a street vendor or know someone who hustles illegal merchandise/substances; hustling is simply a way of thinking outside of the box that tramples over lazy and propels beyond average. The ability to hustle is as expansive as your mind. Step outside of comfortable and become uncomfortable in order to achieve success in ways everyone else hoping for success will accomplish.” In addition to his many other accomplishments and accolades he also has a children’s book. We applaud J Mac’s hustle and look forward to watching his career and endeavors continue to soar.

The Crown vs The Doormat Proverbs 31:10 Part I “WHO CAN FIND A VIRTUOUS WOMAN? FOR HER PRICE IS FAR ABOVE RUBIES.” PRICELESS
The creation of woman is one of the best creations God provided with the thought of being able to help our man and not be abused by our man. Society has once again changed the image of woman along with the roles of each gender. How is the woman and her worth being downgraded to a lessor value? As a woman we shall never be called any name outside of our government name. Unfortunately, we have accepted the limelight of society. We became attached to the beat of the latest track overlooking the actual lyrics of the words spoken upon us. We allowed the word “Bitch” to become a common name to respond to instead of moving away from that calling. The woman was created from the rib of Adam due to his obedience and his need of someone who can help him on his journey. A woman who wears a crown knows who she is as well as whose she is. When speaking of who and whose we will break this down as simple as possible. As a woman you belong to God our creator and who we are is who we reflect based upon our actions and character. When women understand the difference proper adjustments are made. We have the woman who wears her crown proudly and we have the woman who has lowered her standards and allows every man she
22 | COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
encounters to become his personal doormat due to lack of knowledge of her being a gift to man instead of a piece to man. A woman of character knows there will be curveballs thrown to lower her standards so she may fit in with the woman who desires the role of the doormat. Let me be clear, I speak from personal experiences. Society has women appearing to be starved for attention. When we chime in to the latest shows on television we are glancing at the mistress who is placed upon the highest pedestal while the actual woman is placed underneath the rug because she refuses to sell her soul for a little bit of attention. Stop lowering your standards to doormat status to tell society you have a man. Yes, we all desire a mate, but please be wise with who you select as your mate. The woman who wears her crown proudly is the woman who does not have an issue of being alone and she is a woman who understands a man appreciates a challenge. A man does not want a “Yes” woman simply because this is a woman who does not know how to compliment her mate. From time to time self-reflection and self-evaluation is required. I made
mistakes along the journey as well. I gave my heart to the most unworthy boys I could possibly encounter. I was the woman who lost myself when I was severely hurt in my early twenties. I became a replica of the boy who took my heart and attempted to destroy my image and self-esteem. We forget who we are we entertain the lights, camera, actions scenes we receive. Mistakenly, women want men to change because we forgot a man changes when he is ready. A man must make the decision to man hold the roles that are required which are to Provide, Protect and Profess. Women desire men who can take care of home, protect his territory and confess to his errors to assist with locating a solution together. Stop allowing men to come into your space and lay the foundation that we as women create on our own because we know what it is that our heart desires. If you are a woman who was fatherless remind yourself you did not have a father in the physical but you always have the best father in the spiritual. Sometimes he speaks to us as his daughter through other women as well as dreams. The gift of discernment and woman’s intuition ties hand in hand. Just because he grins at you and spark a brief conversation amongst you does not give permission to share your space with him.

Reflections on Race Relations Today By contributing writer Brenda Cross
Has the world gone Topsy Turvy ??? We live at a time when the news media and world events can stir up angry hurtful feelings and these emotions somehow feed on the behaviors of the mass of misinformed people. We then have those people who have taken up the role of Spokesmen for the poor, and underprivileged, these so called leaders tend to have a preface of Rev before there last name. They are experts at manipulation of those of us looking for reason to hate and blame “the man”, for our conditions. Several years have passed since my childhood but I can still remember my grandma telling my brother, “if the police say Haut that means stop.” At the time I didn’t know why she’d repeatedly sanctioned him as to how to behave with the police as he left our home. However, move forward to events of this era. As we hear how the police have targeted those of us packaged in Black. The phase driving while black has become fair cause to be pulled over and harassed. Next, the style of dress which is to wear hoodies and oversized pants adds to the impression that our men are up too no good. Nowadays this type of dress is considered fashionable by movies depicting thugs and
gangsters. Not to mention those who have criminal records...and further more this look reportedly originated in the prison system which carried with it certain sexual implications. Now the question becomes why is it acceptable to dress in civil society in such a manner. Could it be that because disproportionately the black male is incarcerated in such a huge percentage that once released their sons, started the trend “to be like” Dad? ...well no one has the answer to these issues and to be truthful unless young men walk, talk, and dress is what is acceptable attire in the hood they are in many cases ostracized & worse. Living in Chicago each week brings new alarming statistics of black on black crimes resulting in deaths. Unfortunately these loss lies have become “being in the wrong place at the wrong time”. What is more disturbing these lives far out-number the encounters with the police! In closing, its time for parents to teach their children to respect authority, dress for success, and how to carry themselves in society. Wanna chat about this article? CRIS MACHELLE FILMS AND DIAGNOSING AUTISM CrisMachelle Films and Foundation is fighting to increase awareness about Autism in Africa. Construction is underway for an autism foundation being funded by the CrisMachelle Foundation and its Founder, Mrs. Evelyn Nworah. Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult, since there is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorders. Doctors look at the child’s behavior and development to make a diagnosis. ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis by an experienced professional can be considered very reliable.[1] However, many children do not receive a final diagnosis until much older. This delay means that children with an ASD might not get the help they need. Diagnosing an ASD takes two steps: • Developmental Screening • Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation Developmental Screening Developmental screening is a short test to tell if children are learning basic skills when they should, or if they might have delays. During developmental screening the doctor might ask the parent some questions or talk and play with the
child during an exam to see how she learns, speaks, behaves, and moves. A delay in any of these areas could be a sign of a problem. All children should be screened for developmental delays and disabilities during regular well-child doctor visits at: • 9 months • 18 months • 24 or 30 months • Additional screening might be needed if a child is at high risk for developmental problems due to preterm birth, low birth weight or other reasons. In addition, all children should be screened specifically for ASD during regular well-child doctor visits at: • 18 months • 24 months • Additional screening might be needed if a child is at high risk for ASD (e.g., having a sister, brother or other family member with an ASD) or if behaviors sometimes associated with ASD are present It is important for doctors to screen all children for developmental delays, but especially to monitor those who are at a higher risk for developmental problems due to preterm birth, low birth weight, or having a brother or sister with an ASD.
If your child’s doctor does not routinely check your child with this type of developmental screening test, ask that it be done. If the doctor sees any signs of a problem, a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is needed. Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation The second step of diagnosis is a comprehensive evaluation. This thorough review may include looking at the child’s behavior and development and interviewing the parents. It may also include a hearing and vision screening, genetic testing, neurological testing, and other medical testing. In some cases, the primary care doctor might choose to refer the child and family to a specialist for further assessment and diagnosis. Specialists who can do this type of evaluation include: • Developmental Pediatricians (doctors who have special training in child development and children with special needs) • Child Neurologists (doctors who work on the brain, spine, and nerves) • Child Psychologists or Psychiatrists

When the temperature inside the grill reaches 400°, lift lid and turn off one of the burners. The area over the turned-off burner is the indirect heat area. If using a charcoal grill, light 50 to 60 briquettes and let burn until covered with ash, about 20 to 30 minutes. Mound them to one side. The area over the section cleared of coals is the indirect heat area. 3. Brush the grill with vegetable oil. Place chicken skin side down on indirect-heat area; close lid on gas grill. Cook 15 minutes. Turn chicken over, close lid on gas grill, and cook another 10 minutes. Move chicken over direct heat and cook, turning once, until skin is well browned and crisp, 3 to 5 minutes. Watch carefully; dripping fat or any added oils or butters catch fire easily (a small spray bottle filled with water is handy for taming flames). 4. Test one piece for doneness by cutting into the center. It should be slightly pink (it will finish cook-
ing while it rests). If very pink, move all chicken back to indirect heat, cover grill, and cook for another 5 minutes. Let rest at least 10 minutes before serving. Once you’ve got the basic method down, try adding different flavors to your grilled chicken: Spice-rubbed. In step 1, sprinkle your favorite spice rub all over the chicken while you’re letting it come to room temperature. We like the Indian flavors of 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon ground coriander, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon cayenne. Marinated. In step 1, coat chicken in a zesty marinade while you’re letting it come to room temperature. Most vinaigrettes make great marinades for chicken. We like to mix 3 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary or thyme, 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Buttered. In step 1, while chicken is coming to room temperature, rub softened butter onto and under skin. We like to use a compound butter (softened butter mixed with seasonings, herbs, or spices). For one with a bit of kick, we blend 1/4 cup butter with 1/2 minced chipotle chile (either canned, or dried and soaked in hot water until soft), 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Herbed. In step 1, while chicken is coming to room temperature, rub herb paste onto and under skin. Pesto (homemade or store-bought) is a good choice.

5 ANTI-AGING ESSENTIAL OILS While there are many commercial anti-aging products available, most of these formulas are expensive. Instead of pouring money into these pre-made “beauty products” why not create your own using all natural anti-aging oils 1. Apricot Kernel Oil is one of the best carrier oils for creating skin-healing oil blends. Rich in omega-6 gamma-linolenic acid, Apricot Kernel oil helps to hydrate and nourish skin while vitamins A and E contained in the oil encourage regeneration of skin cells and collagen production to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Sweet Almond oil offers the added benefit of being odorless, making it a great choice for those who either don’t enjoy the smell of botanical oils or whose employers do not allow the wearing of scented botanical oils in the workplace. This carrier oil is only lightly oily (about the same consistency of olive oil) and absorbs relatively quickly.
Apricot Kernel oil absorbs into skin relatively quickly and is considered non-greasy, so it can be used on virtually any skin type. However, this oil is especially helpful for hydrating and healing very dry skin.
3. Coconut oil is full of anti-oxidant vitamin E, making it an excellent carrier oil for skin-healing anti-aging serums. Coconut oil is also comprised mainly of medium-chain triglyceride lauric acid, known to be one of the healthiest oils for your skin and body.
2. Sweet Almond Oil contains large amounts of vitamins E and K – meaning that this oil not only helps skin to regenerate and maintain elasticity, it also promotes better circulation. Additionally, Sweet Almond oil is a natural UV blocker, making it ideal for people who spend a lot of time in the sun.
Coconut oil not only helps to reduce signs of aging, it’s also great for strengthening the epidermis against cellulite, and fading stretch marks.. Coconut oil is a natural sunscreen, so you can use it to guard your skin against sun damage without the use of harmful chemicals. It
can even be used to prevent or treat skin infections. 4. Avocado Oil While Avocado oil is a very thick oil – probably too thick for most people to use on sensitive areas like the face – it is one of the healthiest carrier oils for skin. Avocado oil is rich with vitamins A and E, as well as collagen-boosting plant sterolins. Because avocado oil is so thick, I recommend only using serums with this carrier at night or when you’re planning to stay home for the day. Also, try using avocado oil in combination with another carrier if you find that your anti-aging serum is too sticky. 5. Argan Oil Argan Oil is comprised of roughly 80% fatty acids which work wonders to hydrate skin, restore elasticity, and fade fine lines and wrinkles making this another excellent carrier oil for anti-aging serums.
