NOTE FROM EDITOR
GREETINGS COUTURE LIFESTYLE READERS, My goal for Couture Lifestyle Magazine is to take fashion and lifestyle to the next frontier. By definition, the word couture means the business of designing, making, and selling highly fashionable clothing. Lifestyle is defined as a way of life. By our definition, Couture Lifestyle is the art of designing your lifestyle. Last month we had the official launch party for the magazine. It was a huge success, thanks mainly to the attendance and efforts of all of our supporters and the Couture Team. In this month’s edition of Couture Lifestyle, we are focusing some attention on love, eroticism, health and wellness. We will also focus on the number 5; culminating around our event on February 8th, Love Potion Number 5. Most people made the decision to become healthier in January, but many fall off the wagon by February. We will

share a few concepts that may help you on your journey towards better health. There are so many facets to living a couture lifestyle; of course fashion is at the forefront of that lifestyle, but finances, real estate, the arts, healthcare, relationships, cultural beliefs, travel, and professional development are essential elements that define your lifestyle. Never expect the look or content of this magazine to be the same each month. We are in a period of growth and expansion, so please soar with us! It is our goal to inspire and uplift. Life is an evolution, and we all are on a journey in our lives. Couture Lifestyle Magazine wants to share those experiences with you. Likewise, we want to hear about your new experiences. Continue striving for your best and join us as we continue to grow and strive for ours.

Just because the weight is off
THE JOURNEY ISN’T OVER It’s February 2015 and for most, the resolution to lose weight was made…once again. This year, I did too; even though I have had successful gastric bypass surgery. It all started with a chronic weight management problem that has been ongoing since my teen years. I was often teased and called ‘pancake’ because I was fat and flat. (Yes, kids can be cruel!) As an adult, the issue of being slim has been an internal war. I used to tell myself that there was a skinny woman inside screaming to get out; but now I can say that there is a big girl within that is still fighting for dominance! The realization that something needed to be done happened in November of 2009 when my doctor told me that I was showing signs of diabetes. There is a history in my family of this occurring in the late 40’s early 50’s for two generations on both my mother and fathers’ side. Other conditions were hypertension (which became unmanageable), sleep apnea, and finally being diagnosed with moderate to severe asthma. To top it off, I weighed in at a hefty 375 pounds, qualifying me as morbidly obese. Something had to be done…and fast!
6 | COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
The research phase began (in secret) to decide which procedure would be the best for me to have done. Many of my co-workers were getting the lap band (a procedure where a device inserted in your body that is tightened around the top portion of your stomach to keep you from eating so much), with few showing long term positive results. Due to the fact that I did not want a foreign object left inside my body, I decided to get the gastric sleeve, a procedure where the doctor removes 2/3 of your stomach in an attempt to reduce intake; therefore reducing the amount of calories you take in. This is a permanent procedure and if complications arise, it is difficult to correct. Even with this information, the consultation was completed and the process to have this procedure covered by insurance began. You have to have a prescription for the procedure to be covered under your insurance. The hoops to jump through also stated that there had to be five consecutive years of documented obesity. Other conditions that added to my claim were family history of diabetes (along with exhibiting signs of that), high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. This
The realization that something needed to be done happened in November of 2009 when my doctor told me that I was showing signs of diabetes.
took approximately three months to complete. Once the insurance company gave the green light to proceed, there was a psychological evaluation that had to be completed to determine if I was mentally ready for the procedure and to see if there was another underlying cause for being so big. This took roughly another three months to complete, since several visits with an approved psychiatrist and written tests had to be completed. My results concluded that I was a good candidate for the surgical procedure. So, it’s now October of 2010 and I have scheduled the procedure to be completed during the Thanksgiving holiday break (which is when all school teachers have time off to take care of themselves). Approximately two weeks before the procedure, I was informed that the doctor had lost his accreditation with the insurance company; therefore the procedure had to be cancelled. What a blow! I was already an emotional wreck from the pending surgery and not being able to lose weight naturally…now this? The way to get around it was to find another doctor with an accredited agency that could perform the surgery and ac-
cept the insurance that had been preapproved. This had to be done before the end of the year or the entire process would have to start over from the beginning. Another doctor and weight loss clinic was found that explained the different procedures for weight loss and management. Another consultation was completed and the insurance company approved everything within a matter of weeks. The new date was set for December 22, 2010. I consider this my other birthday, since this was a major milestone in my life that ended up saving my life. Everything was a success and as a matter of fact, my doctor was very impressed with the results. Immediately, my blood pressure was regulated and the pre-diabetic signs were gone! The fear of having to take insulin was removed and a great relief. I no longer had to take blood pressure medication and began to feel (as well as see) improvements in my health. Energy levels sky rocketed and I had to buy new clothes to keep up with the weight loss. I was allowed to have a tummy tuck and breast reduction/
lift done within 18 months of my original surgery date. My medical care team was then (and are still now) impressed with my results. In total, I have lost 110 pounds and went from a size 26-28 down to a size -8. Now, here is where yet another psychological adventure began for me. All of my adult life I had been over weight…used to shopping at Lane Bryant and buying XXL sized clothing. I was now able to go into the junior department and there were times when I did not even recognize myself in the mirror! Yes…that is when the journey truly began for me. I have managed to keep the weight off for four years; however due to old age and various asthma medications that contain steroids, the weight is beginning to creep back up. That is why I made a resolution to lose some weight this year… no more than about 15 pounds. The title of this article is true for me and others. So, I will share my weight loss adventure with you and ask that all of you who read this magazine hold me accountable. For those of you who have made the same resolution, let’s do this together!

COLOR WATCH!
5 WAYS TO INCORPORATE MARSALA INTO YOUR WARDROBE Marsala, which has been named Pantone’s color of the year. A cross between brick and rose, Marsala is super flattering on all skin types, so it’s a must-try trend for everyone. Not sure where to start? Try some of these genius ways to incorporate the trendy shade into your 2015 wardrobe. 1. Colored Skinnies We get it: Colored skinnies in bright shades are so 2014. But since Marsala is a much more muted tone, it acts as a neutral in all of your outfits. Marsala as a skinny jean shade is a total no-brainer, especially when paired with cream and black for the perfect date night look. Feeling daring? Pair Marsala skinnies with over-the-knee boots and an oversized sweater until the weather warms up.
2. Go for the Gold Putting Marsala with brown might seem like a natural fit, especially because they’re both muted colors. But why be a wallflower? Ditch the brown and try pairing a Marsala piece with bold gold jewelry. An oversized golf cuff worn with a Marsala jacket looks completely on point, while a statement gold necklace elevates a Marsala shift dress. 3. Nail the Trend If you want to try Marsala in your daily wardrobe without spending a ton, go for the wine hue on a smaller scale. A Marsala manicure lets you test the trend before you commit. Choose a shade that combines wine with pink tones to get the color right. Add a subtle feature nail by painting your ring finger with a deeper burgundy to create a look on point for both work and play.
4. A Shoe-In Our style forecast for 2015: Marsala-toned shoes everywhere. And why not? The best part about Marsala is that it pairs beautifully with a number of other shades and colors. Whether you’re punching up a gray office look with colored pumps or adding Marsala flats to your cozy weekend wear, Marsala footwear is a genius way to add the tone to your closet and make it au courant. 5. Adding Texture As a color, Marsala can be a bit flat. That’s why textured versions of the shade really add depth and dimension to your outfit. If you’re looking for a few pieces to update your closet, look for texture: Leathers, knits and even fringe can make the difference between a lackluster outfit and a true showstopper, courtesy of the color of the year.

FIVE ANTI AGING FOODS 1. Salmon. A real winner in the skin-saving department due to its high protein content and essential fatty acids, salmon is also an anti-inflammatory that helps your mental state and nourishes your immune system. Both are important if good skin is what you want. 2. Fats. Fat has gotten an even worse rap than carbohydrates have, but the fact is all fats are not bad! We need healthy fats for our skin and bodies to look their best. The biggest mistake you can make for your skin is going on a very-lowfat or no-fat diet plan. Good fats can help prevent wrinkles and premature aging. Where do you find the good fats? In foods like fish, olive oil and avocados. Don’t be afraid to “chew the fat!” 3. Green, greener, greenest. Eat your greens. Dark green vegetables like spinach and kale contain all sorts of vitamins and minerals, but they also contain antioxidants and small amounts of essential fatty acids — fantastic things for better skin. 4. Berries. Berries contain antioxidants and polyphenols. These are great compounds for your skin, plus they help reduce your risk for heart disease, so enjoy whatever berries you can find in season. Even during the winter you can usually get your hands on blueberries or strawberries… yum! 5. Water. We all need lots of water to look and feel our very best. And besides, have you ever noticed how sallow and dull your skin looks if you aren’t getting enough fluids? Not to mention your energy levels plummet, so raise a glass and drink to beautiful skin.

YOUR HEALTH… YOUR HEART “THIS IS THE BIG ONE, ELIZABETH! I’M COMING TO JOIN YA HONEY.” ...FRED SANFORD AKA RED FOXX
This is such a popular phrase when a person is faking a heart attack, but the fact of the matter that on October 11. 1991 Redd Foxx suffered a heart attack while taping a T.V. series and died at the hospital. Because he always faked heart attacks the cast that he was playing for a minute. Another famous Afro-American, Harold Washington, the first black mayor of Chicago, while in a meeting with his staff he just simply slumped over in his chair and suffered a heart attack and died on the way to the hospital. One of the deadly diseases they had in common was heart disease or AKA Hypertension. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of Americans and the risks of getting those diseases are even higher for African-Americans. (AHA) The good news is that we can take the steps today to prevent heart disease just by taking simple steps to address them. Steps to Prevent or Combat Heart Disease: 1. Get checked out by your physician on a

regular basis ( at least 1-2 times per year) 2. Control your blood pressure and keep track of the changes in your pressure and notify your doctor 3. Make lifestyle changes 4. Keep your weight under control (BMI 25)- According to the American Heart Association 5. Know your family history, it suggest there are genes that we may carry that make us more salt sensitive (AHA) 6. Eat more chicken, fish and vegetables and watch your portions 7. Exercise on a regularly basis for cardio strength (walking and running are great exercises) February is Heart Healthy Month and we must become more aware of how to better take care of our heart and how to decrease stress in our lives. February 7th 2014 is “Wear Red Day” in honor of the Heart and let’s celebrate together by wearing red on this day.

5 WAYS TO RAISE METABOLISM Weight Train The very best way to improve your metabolism and burn more calories even when you’re at rest is to train with weights. Weight training has been shown to increase exercise post-oxygen consumption (EPOC), which means your metabolism may be raised for hours — in some cases as long as 36 hours — after the session. Weight training is also the main way to stimulate the growth of muscle tissue, which is metabolically active, so it requires calories even when at rest. Translation: muscle burns more calories than fat, even when you’re not exercising. Muscle tissue also helps boost the number of fat-burning enzymes and organelles in your body. Supplement with Healthy Fats Healthy fats are involved in the manufacture of hormones and repair of cell membranes in your body. With the right types of fats, your body can use these anabolically. These processes require energy, so the fats may actually increase your metabolism despite the added calories you are consuming! You can add fats to
18 | COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
your diet without increasing calories simply by increasing the percentage of calories from fats and then lowering the percentage of calories from carbohydrates or proteins. Every Little Bit Counts Believe it or not, simply changing some simple daily habits can have a huge impact on your metabolism. Do you play the game of driving around the parking lot for twenty minutes waiting for the perfect space to open? Instead, park at the edge of the parking lot and walk to your destination. You’ll probably get there quicker because you won’t be wasting time waiting for a spot, and you’ll burn some calories along the way. Other metabolism-boosting activities include standing instead of sitting, taking stairs instead of elevators, and even fidgeting! Don’t Fear Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are not the enemy. Using the right types of carbs can be a valuable tool for your metabolism. For example, you may expend more calories consuming 20 grams
of carbohydrates from lentils than 20 grams of carbohydrates from sugar. The lentils contain fiber and other nutrients that the body must work to extract, which makes it expend more energy. Look for fibrous, low-glycemic carbs and focus on unprocessed carbohydrates. Fluctuate Calories “Zigzagging” calories is by far one of the most effective methods for keeping your metabolism revved, because it fights your body’s attempts to achieve homeostasis. Homeostasis is the action your body takes to “remain stable.” In other words, if you reduce your calories, your body will try to slow your metabolism in order to keep things the same. By zigzagging calories, or switching up the amount you’re eating, you may be able to thwart this mechanism. Some people zigzag day by day; for example, if their target is 2000 calories per day, they’ll consume 1800 one day and 2200 the next. I prefer to consume low calories for a week or two, then raise calories for a week, and then drop them again.

COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE | 19
We opened this story up with a poem of love in honor of Love Potion Number 5. You are asking “what is Love Potion Number 5”? We polled men and women on what the 5 things are they want in love or relationships. The responses were varied and some were completely off the chain! To begin with, most women polled said they wanted a partner that listened, but also who was stable, secure in their own being, attractive, had a since of humor, and was a good lover. Women have a need to feel loved, feel protected, to feel and be seen, to be appreciated and sexually desired. Women naturally nurture children and men, so the nurturing aspect of a woman is a strong part of who she is. The male responses were slightly different but also had some similarities. Men are often reluctant to talk about their needs in intimate relationships. Praise And Approval- Men have infamously tender egos. Needing frequent reassurance about
20 | COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
themselves, career paths, efficacy as partners, sexual prowess, and attractiveness. In short ladies, let him know he is all that! Men feel respect as love. Men and women both connect through sex and communication, but generally, women connect better through communication and men connect better through sex. From a very young age, men are taught to avoid appearing weak at all costs. Perceived “weakness” includes things like complaining, divulging fears or concerns, and expressing self-doubt or worry. A man’s partner is his safe space to fall. Just as women need to slowly open up sexually within a relationship, men open up over time emotionally. Give him his space! Rest assured, suffocating a man (either by failing to allow him free time or with overly jealous behavior) is the fastest way to end a relationship. Men need breathing room in a relationship. Traditionally, when women (or the feminine associated partner) needed to solve a prob-
lem, they would go further into the tribe – connecting with close friends and family and discussing their issues. Conversely, when men have a problem to solve, they would leave the tribe to be alone with their thoughts. Men over-all wanted a good listener, a friend, a woman who keeps her hair and appearance up, and a good cook, but from their it mostly went sexual. From toe sucking, to oral sex, and frequent sexual encounters! There is no correct love potion, just remember mutual respect, intimacy, communication, laugher, and sexual time are all part of the love potion mix! Be real with yourself and your partner to find yours! Of course, you can’t talk love in our society without sex. Sex is a natural part of humanity. We were created as sexual beings. Women enjoy it as much as men, and more women are open to exploring unchartered territory.

THE SIGNATURE WAIST TRAINING CORSET
26 | COUTURE LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Some of today’s hottest celebrities use waist training corsets to shape and maintain a shapely waistline! Our signature corsets are assembled in Colombia by artisans that have crafted fine corsets and girdles for generations. We suggest choosing a size based on height, weight, bust measurement, and waist measurement. Our signature corsets have two functions: They cinch the waist producing immediate noticible results. Secondly, when used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and recommended use, they will aid in shaping the waistline. Choice of Latex or Nylon Use caution in sizing. Do not try to size yourself too small. These are
compression garments; wearing one too tight can result in light-headedness, dizziness, and damage to internal organs. Caring for your waist training corset: wash by hand in warm water and allow to dry naturally. DO NOT USE THE DRYER. Use of a heat dryer will destoy the integrity of the garment. Recommended use: Skin must remain moisturized. We strongly recommend the use of our slimming cream in conjunction with our corset. We also recommend a natural shea or coco butter moisturizer. Corsets can be worn under the clothing or over a camisole or undershirt if wearing while exercising.
