WELCOME TO PEP Congratulations on your acceptance to PEP. Throughout the year, you will engage in special projects, internships, experiences, and service opportunities that allow you to apply theoretical knowledge and skills in a practical setting. This academic year, our theme is "Maximize the Art of Risk Taking." Living with risk may often seem like we are leaving things to luck. However, there is a risk in every situation. In some scenarios, we have time to think things through. In other cases, we don't have the luxury of time. We must decide immediately. In the next few months, we will examine the difference between "luck or gambling" and the art of risk-taking. In that regard, we have assigned you two books: 1) On Managing Risk: A New Framework (2020) by Robert S. Kaplan and Condoleezza Rice and 2) Risk: A Very Short Introduction (2012) by Baruch Fischhoff and John Kadvany. The first is a compilation of Harvard Business Review (HBR) articles focusing on organizational risk, especially during rapid change. It should prepare you to understand the different types of risks that you may face in your careers as workers and leaders. In the second book, the authors explain "what science has learned about how people deal with risk, applying these lessons to diverse everyday examples." Each week, we will touch on relevant chapters in these books or have guest speakers deal with topics such as leadership, scenario planning, and decision-making. Maximizing the Art of Risk-Taking takes courage, bravery, and integrity. It is the opposite of gambling, taking chances, or living by luck. Rather than wishful thinking, risk-taking is a thoughtful process involving an ongoing commitment to reality at all costs. I hope that you will maximize the opportunity to develop the art of risk-taking. It will be challenging at times. However, if you feel overworked, don't hesitate to get in touch with me, our leaders, and your peers in the PEP. The program is not meant to compete with your responsibilities. We will provide you skills and resources to help you succeed as a student and in your future careers. In short, we are committed to standing and working with you as teammates. Sincerely, Lulrick Balzora, PhD Pathway Dean The Social Behavioral Sciences & Human Services Broward College
