From the President As we celebrate another year of Bucks accomplishments, we remain focused on helping our students find their passion and unlock their full potential. The successes and achievements outlined in this year’s Annual Report highlight our innovative approaches and strong commitment to our communities. In addition to our many transfer pathways to colleges and universities across the country, we focused significant efforts this year on helping our business partners grow their workforce through a variety of educational and training programs. In 2020, we will break ground on our new Center for Workforce Development building adjacent to the Epstein Campus at Lower Bucks in Bristol Township. Bucks is committed to working with our region’s business and political leaders to create new career pathways that both lead to well-paying jobs in our community and strengthen our local business and industry partners. Across the college, our faculty and staff remain the catalyst for positive change by helping students plan for and adapt to a constantly changing world. Further, our alumni are answering the call through record-breaking support of their time and financial resources. We are poised to take this positive momentum into our next strategic plan which envisions Bucks as a place for innovative educational opportunities, lifelong learning, and a commitment to a culture of inclusion where everyone is valued. Thank you for your continued support and ongoing commitment to Bucks County Community College. I invite you to learn about Bucks, and encourage you to become a part of our exciting future. Sincerely,
Bucks SMART.

MEET PROFESSOR KATHI KNIGHT, PH.D. Dr. Kathi Knight doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty. In fact, working in the dirt happens almost daily for the professor of biology and environmental science, usually in Tyler State Park, the 1,700-acre “outdoor classroom” adjacent to Bucks County Community College. “We’ve had a relationship with the park that goes back more than 20 years,” said Knight, who developed the College’s Environmental Science major shortly after she began teaching at Bucks in 1999. “We used to do service-learning projects there. Now, we’re doing actual research, from planting and monitoring pollinator meadows, to planting more than 300 native trees to restore a forest trail.” In the fall of 2019, Knight’s environmental science students joined community volunteers from the Neshaminy Creek Watershed Association to carefully plant more than 300 native trees, shrubs, and other vegetation as part of the Covered Bridge Trail Forest Restoration Project, funded by grants totaling more than $33,000.
In addition to the forest trail restoration, Knight’s students conduct research at three meadows in Tyler State Park that were planted with a $10,000 grant from PECO in an effort to restore endangered monarch butterfly habitats. Knight works alongside Professor Joann Corn on the long-term project, which is already making a marked difference.” The students are doing plant identification in the meadow, looking for native pollinator plants,” said Knight. “They count monarch butterfly caterpillars, and also count other butterflies and any other insects that they see.”
And she hopes to bring more educators into the STEM field with her work on a $39,000 three-year grant from the NSF-Noyce STEM Scholars Program. The sub-award with Rider University aims to improve the number and quality of STEM educators, promote their retention in traditionally hard-to-staff school districts, and measure the impact these educators have on underrepresented learners in STEM disciplines and careers. Knight is implementing the grant activities, while STEM Department Dean Dr. Shawn Wild coordinates the grant partnership with Rider University in New Jersey.
Knight’s path to Bucks was not a typical academic career trajectory. After earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rutgers University in New Jersey, Knight conducted agricultural research for a company whose management encouraged her to return to school while working. Even after completing a Ph.D. from Rutgers and Greenwich University, Knight always thought she would remain a researcher, until she got a taste teaching as a graduate assistant. Now, she has the best of both worlds, as she is able to inspire students while conducting research.
While the grants and research help motivate Knight and her students, she realizes there’s much work to be done. “Environmental Science is not a happy class,” Knight said she tells her students. “Everything we talk about is really depressing, because we talk about how humanity is harming the environment. But I tell them we’re going to do great things. We focus on ecological restoration, like establishing the Tyler Park meadows and restoring the forest trails. I think this next generation, they get it, they see what’s happening.

– ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT – Biotechnology Major CHELSEA KARACZ ‘13 When you talk to Chelsea, you get the distinct impression that cancer, under her watch, doesn’t stand a chance. Her family like millions of others has been affected by the disease. “You want to help your loved ones, and for me, that’s how the passion for cancer research happened,” she said. Fresh from high school, Chelsea enrolled as a biology major at Bucks with the dream of a career that includes hands-on lab work. During her freshman year, online classes afforded her the ability to travel while schooling. When Bucks added a degree program in Biotechnology, she transitioned to on-campus courses and there found her path to biomedical research.
The prerequisites at Bucks allowed Chelsea to utilize many new laboratory techniques that she considers a major stepping stone toward her transfer to Thomas Jefferson University. “After coming to Jefferson, I realized how ahead of the game I was in the lab, just already having had that previous hands-on experience that I did at Bucks.” Chelsea shared this piece of advice for future Bucks students: “Don’t underestimate your time there, utilize it for its potential. If you have a passion in life and you have chosen Bucks for whatever reason, allow yourself to be completely absorbed by everything you have at your disposal.” To find out more information about our alumni visit bucks.edu/stories.
– CURRENT STUDENT SPOTLIGHT – Honors@Bucks Student MAGGIE DROHAN
“
Bucks is such a great option for so many reasons. First, you save so much money doing your first two years here, and it’s a nice way to make sure college, or even just your intended major, is actually the right choice for you without totally breaking the bank. Also, it’s a good way to get adjusted to college life without also having to deal with homesickness and being truly independent for the first time on top of that. Finally, Bucks has transfer agreements with a bunch of schools, so it’s really easy to make the switch to a four-year school when you’re ready for that.

“
Coming out of the Marines just 2 years ago, my career path was uncertain and I was unsure where I wanted to end up. But my advisers and professors here at Bucks helped to guide me in a direction where I could feel confident and happy. Bucks provides an all-around excellent opportunity. The staff are
happy to work with you to attain your career goal and whether you are using Bucks as a stepping stone or applying to the nursing program (which is one of the best 2 year programs in the area), you will without a doubt have built a solid foundation starting your college career and eventually your lifetime career through Bucks County Community College.
