From the President As I travel around Bucks County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I am always reminded of our institution’s positive impact and the pride members of our Bucks community feel in providing accessible, affordable, and innovative higher education. As we look toward our future, we are poised to prepare our community of learners for today’s competitive and complex economy and building upon our successful programs that literally span the globe. While some of our peers have seen applications decline dramatically, we continue to attract a stable applicant pool due to our reputation and our talented faculty and staff who help students plan for and adapt to a constantly changing world. Our presence in the communities we serve is another source of pride for Bucks. From our student club members volunteering with local non-profit organizations to our staff serving in key board leadership roles to help shape the County’s future, Bucks not only educates; it also supports and connects the communities we serve every day. This report outlines some of the achievements and progress over the past fiscal year, and the generous support that helps make such achievements possible. I invite you to learn about Bucks, and I encourage you to become part of our community of excellence that is enthusiastically embracing the future. Sincerely,
Bucks SMART.

MEET PROFESSOR SARAH JAKUB Early in her career, Sarah Jakub learned that she wanted to make a difference in peoples’ lives. It began shortly after earning her undergrad degree in sociology and American studies. “Following my Bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University, I worked as a research assistant at the University of Pennsylvania Memory Disorders Clinic where I assisted those suffering from dementia,” recalled Jakub, who went on to earn a master’s in sociology from Temple and a Juris Doctorate from CUNY. “I also worked for a judge in family court in Brooklyn, New York, where we reviewed abuse and neglect cases of children from all backgrounds.”
Such real-world practice influenced her approach to teaching, said Jakub, an associate professor teaching sociology and criminal justice who has been at Bucks since 2010. “These experiences taught me how to communicate in difficult and emotional situations, and provided me with compassion, empathy and a continued desire to make a difference in students’ lives,” she added. Jakub, who also coordinates the Criminal Justice area of the Social and Behavioral Science Department, says such values have played a role in her teaching style. “As a professor, I attempt to actively and consistently engage with my students so that my classes are as interesting and challenging as I can possibly make them,” said Jakub. “I want each and every student to become enriched and empowered as a result of taking my courses.” Among the courses Jakub teaches are Criminology, Introduction to Criminal Law, Criminal Evidence, Introduction to Juvenile Justice, Probation and Parole, and Introduction to Sociology. In addition, Jakub oversees the criminal justice
internship program at Bucks, which allows students to participate in an internship while earning class credit. “Students have interned with police departments in Newtown Borough, Yardley Borough, Morrisville, and Abington, as well as in the courts in Bucks County and law firms throughout the area,” said Jakub. “Some students have been offered full-time positions following their internships. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to not only receive real-world experience but also make connections in their chosen field.” Jakub says being able to share knowledge and engage students was among the main reasons she decided to pursue to become a professor. “I have always loved learning, sharing knowledge and being part of academic communities,” she explained. “What’s more, the Bucks community really cares about our students. There are so many people in different departments who work every day to assist students with attaining their goals, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”
“I want each and every student to become enriched and empowered as a result of taking my courses.”

MEET ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING STUDENT JOEL CERVANTES Joel Cervantes is a first-generation American pursuing his Associate Degree in nursing. After a medical discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), he worked several jobs at restaurants and in landscaping before enrolling at Bucks and realizing his dream of entering the healthcare field. Already a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and a recipient of the Jean H. Grupp Memorial Nursing Scholarship, Joel plans to pursue his bachelor’s and master’s degrees after graduating from Bucks in May 2019. Because he grew up in a home with three generations under one roof, Joel says his elders taught him how to be the best version of himself. When all four grandparents battled chronic illnesses, he learned he had the compassion and patience to enter the medical field. How did Bucks fit in with your career plans? After my unexpected medical discharge from USMC boot camp, I found out very quickly that I did not have adequate backup plans in place. While working in a restaurant, two friends who already attended Bucks spoke very highly of the college, as well as the flexible schedules in regards to juggling classes and work. When did you realize that education was important for you, and why? When I took the class called “Responding to Emergencies,” I found out that education was important. Part of the class involved an option to become CPR certified. That class, as well as the tough nutrition class taught by a registered dietitian, made me realize that I could make a difference. I was drawn to nursing after taking prerequisite classes in an attempt to discover what I liked within the realm of nutrition, medicine, and helping others. That’s why I had joined the Marine Corps in the first place. I simply wanted to help others.
Was there an “aha” moment that made you decide to become a nurse? I had multiple “aha” moments that led to my decision to become a nurse. When I found out I would be medically discharged from the Marines, I had to get a skin-prick test to determine the cause of anaphylaxis. My now-red dog-tags had “multiple allergies – pollen, tree nuts, shellfish” written on them, and I left equipped with an Epi-pen. It was when I got home and did some research that I realized I wanted to pursue medicine. But at the time, this was only a dream. Bucks made it available for me to “try.” Living with both sets of grandparents shaped me in a way that I can only look at as being blessed. My grandparents had asthma, COPD, A-fib, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. The dementia taught me patience, while my grandmother surviving multiple strokes taught me to remain calm under pressure and think clearly. Multiple times, I had to call an ambulance and assist EMTs at the scene or ride with them to the hospital. My mother’s mom, who had dementia for years before she passed, needed a translator because she did not speak English. This forced me to not only enhance my Spanish speaking and translating skills, it also opened me up to medical terminology, diagnostic tests, and how to care for a person who is scared and in an environment unfamiliar to them. This taught me compassion, which I use every day as a CNA at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
What do you hope to share with others about your journey? I hope to share three things: courage, commitment, and discipline. Have the courage to be able to start something. You have to work hard, and to initiate any step toward the path to success, you start by putting one foot in front of the other. Also, have the commitment to get back up once you get knocked down. Life will hold you down if you let it. Finally, have the discipline to stick to your goals. I learned self-discipline and mental fortitude while I was in the Marines. Regardless of intense mental training, there is a level of discipline that everyone must eventually meet in order to fulfill their goals. One simply doesn’t accidentally fall into success. To me, success isn’t some big thing that happens once and it’s done. Success requires discipline. In addition, I would like to motivate others to pursue their goals. We only get one life. If you’re not growing, learning, reaching, striving, clawing, scratching, trying, failing, and learning again, then you’re dying. We are not promised tomorrow, so the best time to start is right now, today.
“… success isn’t some big thing that happens once and it’s done. Success requires discipline.”

MEET ALUMNUS DON LOWING ‘95 “One challenge that has followed my entire career is ice sculpting. Ten million pounds of ice and 20 years later, I am still practicing that skill that I learned in a class under Chef Arrowood.” “Multi-media producer, world-class ice sculptor, and artist Don Lowing ‘95 started his journey at Bucks majoring in the Chef Apprenticeship Program and minoring in art. “I think at 18 years old, it’s the time to discover who you are and who you want to be,” Lowing said. “If you have an area that you are interested in as a discipline as a whole, you should start to explore that. For me that was the creative, the artistic.” Lowing believes his professional successes have come from both hard work and discipline. “A great influencer for me was Chef Earl Arrowood as a mentor and as my professor…He provided a lot of practical experience in a way that me and my classmates could understand.”
Perfection of the craft of ice sculpting requires a significant time commitment, but with it comes unique and challenging opportunities. “For me, that was participating in the World Championship Ice Sculpting competition in Alaska,” Lowing said. There, teams of four people compete to sculpt 20 tons (“Volkswagen-size hunks of ice”) each in five and a half days. “I have taken a creative path all the way through my entire career, had an enormous amount of experience, and added education and skills.” He finished second at the 2007 competition, and continues to enter different competitions all over the world to this day. Lowing’s creativity comes from challenging his environment. He recently completed an accelerated Executive MBA program at St. Joseph’s University where he works in video, web, animation, film, print and graphic design. “This was a challenge for my mind,” he said. “I’m shaking the whole thing up, looking to discover something new, bringing a creative lens to a business discipline.”
Lowing’s investment in education has certainly paid off in helping him discover his passion. “Bucks will help shape [your passion]. It helped shape it for me,” he said. — Written by Kimberly Kratz ‘11
