he Board Chair & CEO Welcome to the 29th annual Crystal Ball. Thank you for joining us as we transform the healing experience for sick and injured children and their families at BC Children’s Hospital.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to members of the Crystal Ball Committee. This remarkable team’s dedication and leadership continues to push the boundaries of what is possible for pediatric health care in our province. Every year, their creativity and energy elevate the Crystal Ball experience and, most importantly, result in a positive, lasting impact on the care provided at BC Children’s Hospital.
Your contributions are making it possible for patients, families and BC Children’s Hospital caregivers to realize their dream of having a holistic healing environment that meets the emotional and physical needs of children and youth. When the doors to the Teck Acute Care Centre open in 2017, our patients will benefit from a state-of-the-art facility. And thanks to your support of the Children’s Healing Experience Project, they will have access to and engage with thoughtfully designed features and spaces aimed at enhancing their experience in a way that has never before been possible.
On behalf of the children and families we serve, thank you.
David R. Podmore, o.b.c.

An engaging and soothing environment is not merely a decorative backdrop for health-care delivery – it’s a vital part of patients’ and families’ experiences and well-being. With your help we are ensuring children not only benefit from the latest technologies and treatments at BC Children’s, but also enjoy elements that promote healing and health. You are helping to open a world of possibilities for children who will rely on the hospital in the years to come.

the Lieutenant Governor As Honorary Patron of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, I am pleased to extend greetings to everyone in attendance tonight at the 29th Crystal Ball. Since its beginning in 1987, the Crystal Ball has raised over $18 million for BC Children’s Hospital. Funds raised at this year’s event will go towards the Children’s Healing Experience Project—an initiative to create a physical environment conducive to the comfort and healing of the young patients in the Teck Acute Care Centre at the new BC Children’s Hospital. In British Columbia, we can all take comfort knowing that in their time of greatest need, our children receive care that is second to none. With the ongoing support of generous donors, supporters and volunteers, BC Children’s Hospital will continue to lead the way in pediatric health care for generations to come. On behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all the people of our great province, thank you for your continued generosity and commitment to the health and healing of our children.
Sincerely,
The Honourable Judith Guichon, obc lieutenant governor of british columbia

the Premier As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s 29th Annual Crystal Ball, here at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver. BC is fortunate to have such a fabulous Children’s Hospital and I am pleased to support the Foundation in the important work they are doing for children and families across the province. I would like to take this opportunity to thank tonight’s organizers for bringing together this event for another year. Your hard work is making a difference for everyone at BC Children’s Hospital — patients and staff alike. Please accept my best wishes for a successful gala.
Sincerely,
Christy Clark, premier

a message from
the Minister of Health Greetings to all attendees of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation 29th annual Crystal Ball. Since that first fun-filled evening back in 1987 this blacktie gala has raised over $18 million dollars. Thank you for being a part of this remarkable yearly tradition.
With the support of Crystal Ball guests, there is an opportunity to create an even more child-friendly atmosphere at the Teck Acute Care Centre. Plans for murals in corridors, themed magnetic resonance imaging rooms and a “sky ceiling” in the burn treatment recovery room will provide a serene distraction and make the space less intimidating for young patients. These visual stimuli can provide a calming influence and an actual decrease in pain intensity, blood pressure and anxiety.
In addition to the great work the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation does with the Crystal Ball event, they are a key partner with the provincial government in developing the new Teck Acute Care Centre. Their contribution of $150 million toward Phase 2 of the project was vital in making sure it became a reality.
Thanks again for your generous contributions and hard work in improving health care for BC’s children. Congratulations on 29 years of this wonderful event and enjoy the evening’s festivities.
Sincerely,
Terry Lake, minister of health

onight,
through a transformation of the Four Seasons’ beautiful ballroom, we are transporting you to an exotic and luxurious Persian paradise, a place that delights, excites and where dreams are made. As you indulge in the festivities and enjoy the company around you, we hope that you will appreciate the undeniable impact our physical environment has on our senses. In much the same way, the Children’s Healing Experience Project (CHEP) will revolutionize the experiences of our patients and their families as they walk through the doors of BC Children’s Hospital. With your support, we can make it happen. 20
Evidence shows that children heal fastest at home with the support of their friends and families, in the company of familiar elements. Unfortunately, many children must spend days, weeks or even months in hospital to receive treatment and recover from serious illness or injury. The CHEP will have an impact on these children’s and their family members’ experience, as we strive to make their time in hospital as positive and stress-free as possible.
As a result of these extensive consultations, strategic elements will be purposefully incorporated into the new facility. These include natural light, private patient rooms, play spaces, beds for family members, kitchenettes and many others. Studies have found that murals, for example, when used as distraction, result in a significant decrease in pain intensity and anxiety in burn patients. Images of nature on the ceiling help to lower blood pressure in highly stressed pre-surgical patients. The goal is to ensure all of our patients’ needs are answered, whether they be physical, emotional or developmental. We want to ensure each child is given the best chance of health and recovery.
In the initial planning stages of the Teck Acute Care Centre, planners gathered input from clinical staff and patient families to understand their concept of what an ideal facility would look like. In interview after interview, the hospital’s environment was cited as an area with significant opportunity for improvement.
Particularly, the CHEP will help to reduce children’s pain and anxiety through positive distraction, assist with the clinical care and evaluation of young patients, provide patients with a sense of control over their environment and, simply, give kids the opportunity to be kids.
Thank you for supporting this vital project.

With one glance at Jack Drover, no one would suspect that this curious, active and sociable two-year-old had such a bumpy start. Jack’s first two days of life were typical: full of crying, bouncing, rocking and some sporadic sleeping. But on his third day, Jack’s parents, Sasa and Stephen, found out that Jack was born without an anus; after corrective surgery, medical geneticists diagnosed Jack with VACTERL association, a rare syndrome that causes malformations of organs and bones. Given the complexity of Jack’s condition, Sasa and Stephen expect that their son will be spending much of his life in the hospital. These days, they visit twice a week, and have become familiar with nine different departments at BC Children’s Hospital. “With his diagnosis, we ping-pong all over the hospital,” says Sasa.
22
As Jack grows and eventually finds treatment and care in the Teck Acute Care Centre, he and thousands of children like him will experience new comfort on the road to recovery. They will have access to private, spacious rooms with natural sunlight, outdoor patios, and soothing common rooms, all designed to create an uplifting environment that engages and distracts. For teens like Crystal Nguyen, a bright, calming environment is crucial to long-term health. Diagnosed with cancer when she was 11, Crystal went through three rounds of chemotherapy before she was diagnosed with sepsis, a serious condition that threatens the organs; she fell into a monthlong coma. After a relapse, Crystal had to undergo a bone marrow transplant, which forced her into long-term isolation to protect her immune system. She recalls the environment as less than stimulating.
“The walls were white, but it was a kind of ugly white because of where I was and what I had to do,” she says. Today, Crystal is free of her cancer. Her lasting memories of her friendships with nurses have fuelled her own dreams to become a pediatric oncology nurse. And if Crystal were ever to return to the hospital, and redesign the space herself?
“I would bring more light, more colour and more windows,” she says. Thanks to you and your dedication, tonight’s Crystal Ball ensures that children like Jack and Crystal receive care in a space that fulfills their needs for engagement, for distraction, and for a place that offers them the warmth of a second home.

ittle Drya Sculpture
The journey of Little Dryad began with an inspiration and a hope for the creation of an interactive art installation at the new BC Children’s Hospital. That dream became a reality with “The Family Commons Sculpture Park” – a collaborative project by Vancouver artists Myfanwy MacLeod and Shannon Oksanen. A survivor of childhood cancer herself, Shannon knows first-hand the effect that the hospital environment has on a child’s healing process. Shannon’s evocative sculptural work now attracts some of the world’s top art collectors and has been shown and sold internationally from London’s prestigious VTO Gallery to top galleries in San Diego and Sweden. Her artistic collaborator on this project, Myfanwy, is a renowned Vancouver artist working in a variety of media, who is well known for her humour and intelligent reflections on pop culture. Together, these artists have created an outdoor oasis seamlessly blending form and function while providing patients and families with a space to engage and inspire children during their recovery. They have made a smaller version of one of these sculptures especially for the Crystal Ball. When The Family Commons Scuplture Park is installed in 2016, Dryad, the tree nymph, will be in full view. Tonight, take home “Little Dryad,” a symbol of all of the innovation, care and community inspired by the Children’s Healing Experience Project. From one discerning wine collector to another – tonight we offer the true wine lover an exclusive opportunity with these rare finds. From one of only five châteaus categorized as a Premier Cru Classé wine, this six-litre imperial of the 1991 Château Mouton Rothschild is what wine dreams are made of. A blend of 74 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, eight per cent Cabernet Franc and 18 per cent Merlot gives this wine a brackish and slightly orange hue. The palate is fresh and full, elegant and round, with well-integrated tannins leading into a rich and dense finish. The bottle’s label was designed by Japanese artist Setsuko, telling the centuries-old story of grape growing. A fitting label for a bottle in demand the world over. Even more rare is this collection of Ornellaia Collezione. This Tuscan collection contains some exquisite vintages beginning with the celebrated and multi-award-winning 2001, and leading up to the 2004, considered one of the major expressions of Ornellaia on the market. The bottles, three of each vintage, are individually numbered and detailed in an elegant booklet. The 12 bottles are housed in a handmade, individually numbered, solid oak display case made of the “barriques” the wine was aged in. Only 600 of these distinctive cases were ever made. This is your chance to proudly display case #100. These wines have been expertly assessed by international wine lecturer, French Wine Scholar and Hong Kong Wine Judge, Dr. Clinton Lee. $9,000

Born in Nelson BC, the late William Roberts discovered his passion for watercolour painting during his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Over the years he honed his technique, creating pieces that were reflective of the tranquility he found in painting. As an artist he capitalized on every opportunity to showcase his subjects, many of which embodied the simple things in life. His imaginative style demonstrates a wide range of emotions, from reflection to inner loneliness, and his unpretentious, yet extremely refined pieces have since become highly collectible. This delicate diptych shows a soothing sunlit window, which will bring a calming brightness to any space. Don’t miss your chance to take home this piece of Canadian art history! Watercolour diptych, “South Sun,” 48" x 48" $6,000
