A Message from the Board Chair and the President & CEO

Dear friends, We are honoured to welcome you to the 28th Annual Crystal Ball. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the outstanding innovation that is changing the lives of sick children and their families at BC Children’s Hospital. Your presence here tonight will have a lasting impact on the health and well-being of children with what are often debilitating orthopedic conditions. Your support means that these children will benefit from more accurate and informed diagnosis and treatment, and reduced exposure to potentially harmful radiation. You are supporting the purchase of Western Canada’s first pediatric EOS Imaging System – Nobel-Prize-winning technology.

David Podmore, obc Chair, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation

Teri Nicholas,

msw, rsw President & CEO BC Children’s Hospital Foundation

Construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre, the heart of the new BC Children’s Hospital, is rapidly moving forward, and advances in medical technology are coming just as fast. With your help we are maintaining BC Children’s status as a leader in the provision of pediatric care. To that end, the adoption of new technology, like the EOS Imaging System, is as critical as the new facility. Your contributions tonight are ensuring BC’s kids continue to receive the best in orthopedic care. Thank you. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Crystal Ball Committee. This extraordinary team invests a tremendous amount of time and energy to make the evening a success and surpasses our expectations year after year. Their creativity and energy continues to lift the Ball and the care delivered at BC Children’s Hospital to ever-greater heights. On behalf of the children and families we serve, thank you.

A Message from the Lieutenant Governor As Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Honorary Patron of the 28th Crystal Ball, I am pleased to join you this evening in support of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. The beneficiaries of tonight’s Ball are the thousands of children who visit the Orthopedics team at BC Children’s Hospital every year. Funds raised this evening will go towards a pediatric EOS imaging machine, the first one in Western Canada. This state-of-the-art technology will significantly reduce young patients’ exposure to radiation and provide the complete information necessary for physicians to more efficiently diagnose and treat their patients. As parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, we can take comfort knowing the children of our province are receiving the best care possible. I extend my thanks to all donors, sponsors, supporters and guests here tonight for your generosity and support of the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. I wish you a most enjoyable and memorable evening! Sincerely,

The Honourable Judith Guichon, obc

A Message from the Premier As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone attending the 2014 Annual Crystal Ball, hosted by the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver. This year marks the 28th anniversary of the Crystal Ball. Since its inception in 1987, the Crystal Ball has become one of leading fundraising galas in British Columbia dedicated to children’s health. The proceeds of this year’s event will go toward the purchase of Western Canada’s first pediatric EOS imaging machine. This tool will help BC Children’s Hospital to continue to provide the high-quality care for which they are known. Thank you to everyone attending tonight. Your involvement and contributions will truly make a difference for many children and their families all across BC – for that you should feel very proud. I know a lot of preparation goes into coordinating a special evening like this, and I want to extend my appreciation to the event organizers for the hard work and thought that has gone into making tonight’s gala such a success. Sincerely,

Christy Clark, premier

A Message from the Minister of Health On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, I would like to extend my best wishes and thanks to each of you in attendance at this evening’s gala. The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has a rich history of making a difference in the lives of children needing health care services, and the Crystal Ball event adds another chapter to that legacy, with the event alone raising over $15 million to support children’s health since its inception. This is an exciting time for the BC Children’s Hospital, with construction underway for the new Teck Acute Care Centre, scheduled to be completed in 2017. This centre is one of the largest health care capital investments in British Columbia, and we are pleased to support ongoing infrastructure and innovation in the care of our province’s children, youth, women and families. I understand that the Foundation’s goal this year is to raise money to bring recent Nobel Prize-winning technology and Western Canada’s first EOS pediatric imaging machine to B.C. This machine allows physicians to analyze 3D full-body images of patients from any angle all with less radiation exposure, keeping our kids safer and making diagnosis easier. Achieving goals like this is a testament to the calibre of the foundation and the leading-edge care provided at the BC Children’s Hospital. Tonight you have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of sick children and the people who love them. Thank you for your willingness to give generously of your time and money. Sincerely,

Terry Lake, minister of health 2 8T H A NNUA L C RYSTAL BALL

C E L E B R AT I N G To understand innovation, we need only look to the imaginings of children. When they invent, they do so having never known, or imagined, boundaries or limits. Knowing nothing of the selfjudgment, editing or critique that so often stifles creativity in adults, children are the greatest of innovators. So often they connect what seem like incompatible ideas and in so doing conjure up new ways of seeing the world; and they do so with a natural confidence.

16

I N N O V AT I O N A year after we celebrated the completion of the $200-million Campaign for BC Children, we’re taking our next cue from the bright minds of children. The innovators at BC Children’s Hospital – our scientists, doctors, nurses, therapists, child life specialists and many others – create a centre of child health excellence out of much more than bricks and mortar. It springs from a blend of expertise, technology and a collective sense of compassion. Much like the children they treat, our caregivers look deep within themselves to find the courage to build on new ideas, embrace change, and pursue innovation in technology and care. Their efforts manifest in many forms – from the smallest of surgical tools, and music and art therapies, to powerful devices like the EOS Imaging System. The freedom to innovate also stems from the generous support of donors like those involved in the Crystal Ball. It’s because of people like you that BC Children’s Hospital staff members are able to harness the power of new technologies, advance creative ideas from concept to practice and innovate with groundbreaking research. The end result is spectacular: a healthy future for BC’s children and the opportunity for these young minds to continue to dream without limits.

17

Tonight’s Cause

Proceeds from the 28th Annual Crystal Ball will fund the purchase of Western Canada’s first pediatric EOS imaging machine, a leading-edge piece of equipment that will use Nobel-prize winning technology to improve the diagnosis and treatment of children with orthopedic conditions, while significantly reducing radiation exposure for these patients at BC Children’s Hospital. The Orthopedics team at BC Children’s has 14,000 visits from children and their families every year, and the vast majority of these children require some type of imaging procedure as part of their visit. Doctors use scans, such as X-rays, to monitor children’s bone and muscle growth, and to diagnose and detect problems. In less than 20 seconds, and with very limited radiation exposure, the EOS machine can acquire a whole-body image of a standing patient in a single scan. The higher-quality scans give physicians a complete view and better understanding of patients’ bodies, reducing the need for repeat exams. The quick turnaround time for imaging and equipment set-up means the EOS system will help our caregivers respond to growing demands for care from children with increasingly complex conditions.

18

Currently, the only EOS imaging machines in Canada are in Eastern Canada. By supporting the purchase of this much- needed equipment through the Crystal Ball, you are helping BC’s children to continue to receive the highest level of care, while protecting our young patients from the harmful and lasting effects of radiation exposure.

The Tees-DeBeyer brothers

22

For most of his life, 13-year-old Malcolm Tees-DeBeyer has demonstrated what it means to be resilient. As the eldest of three brothers living with congenital scoliosis, the teen shows his little brothers how to be strong in the face of great discomfort. He’s a role model out of necessity, and with great courage. When Malcolm was a toddler, his parents Susan Tees and Dan DeBeyer noticed he had trouble breathing and that he felt winded after walking just a few metres. By the time he reached 18 months of age, scoliosis–a condition that causes an abnormal curvature of the spine– had forced Malcolm’s spine into a 90-degree curve, compromising his lung capacity. In 2005, when Malcolm was four years old, he became the first child in BC to undergo a procedure using what is called vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib, or VEPTR, a treatment that uses expandable rods to straighten the spine. Malcolm’s younger brothers William, 11, and James, 6, have had the same procedure, which requires surgery every four to six months to adjust the rods and regular X-ray scans to monitor their growth.

2 8T H A NNUA L C RYSTAL BALL

23

Their shared condition has created an unshakeable bond between the brothers, says Dan. “Malcolm has been supportive all along with the boys as they started with these procedures. Everybody is working together and supporting each other after their surgeries, helping each other get back to a normal life.” Over the course of his lifetime, Malcolm has had 118 X-ray scans and two CT scans. William has undergone 52 scans, and James has had 57, including those related to treatment of respiratory and lung problems that can occur with scoliosis.

A new EOS imaging machine means safer treatment for the Tees-DeBeyer boys and many other children who visit BC Children’s Hospital’s Orthopedics Department – children like Mason McDonald, 13, and his sister and Cory, 11. The McDonalds, who also live with scoliosis, travel from their Langley home to BC Children’s Hospital every two or three months for X-rays and surgery. The EOS machine will also make a huge difference in the life of 10-year-old Faris Abdulwahab, who was diagnosed in utero with a genetic disorder commonly known as brittle bone disease.

X-rays are necessary in the diagnosis Dan DeBeyer acknowledges that scans and treatment of conditions like scoliosis. are important for constant, clear images But the technology currently used at BC of his sons’ bone structure as they grow. River by Gabryel Harrison

Born in New Zealand, Gabryel Harrison completed her Fine Arts degree at the University of Ottawa and became an art therapist after finishing her postgraduate studies. Since 1999, Harrison has devoted herself to painting full-time. In both her studio practice and her poetry, Harrison invites the viewer to slow down and perceive art as an object of contemplation or evidence of wonder. It is her belief that this simple engagement can be a radical act. “My paintings are evocations of states of mind and the constant transformations in the sea of the senses, the ever-changing landscape of emotions, and the mutable mind reflected in the surrounding natural world. River was created specifically for the 28th Crystal Ball and is valued at $15,500. This unique piece comes with an exclusive opportunity for up to 10 guests to join Harrison in her Vancouver studio one evening for a glass of wine and a private viewing of her work.
