Looking Back, Moving Forward BCCIC Annual Report 2013 - 2014

Board Message

Director’s Message

The past year has been one marked with growth, change and renewal!

This past year - April 2013 to March 2014 – was a historical year for BCCIC. The events that took place included a new five-year program application to DFATD; this application included a program for the Inter-Council Network to be based in BC. The seven Councils across Canada also participated in a DFATD commissioned independent evaluation of our programs, and as the quote below illustrates, the results were very positive and spoke highly of the membership across the province. Finally, we applied for our first independent funding to the International Development Research Council and were awarded a research grant focused on NGOs based in rural communities.

Our three-year contract with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) came to an end on March 31, 2014 and our staff saw this as an opportunity to pass on the reigns. Shams Alibhai has been the executive director of BCCIC for the past seven years. Through her leadership, and with the help of Lynn Slobogian and Jeremy Nemanishen, we have attained national credibility with active regional networks; and provided greater member education, networking opportunities and stronger public engagement. The board thanks Shams and her team for their dedicated service to BCCIC and we wish them the very best in their new life directions! The board selected Michael Simpson as our new executive director. Michael is the past BCCIC board member who led the strategic planning process; and he has extensive development experience as executive director of member organization One Sky. We have also filled four positions to better serve the needs of the Council and its members. The board welcomes Michael and his new energetic and skilled team! With strong leadership, a vibrant staff, a newly adopted strategic plan, a very favourable evaluation of our work and a successful audit both commissioned by DFATD, a recently awarded grant by the International Development Research Council (IDRC), and secured funding from DFATD for the next five years, BCCIC is poised to make even greater strides. The board is also grateful to you, our members and friends, for your continued input, moral and financial support during this past year. We are eagerly looking forward to the coming years at BCCIC and to serving the membership!

BCCIC 2013-2014 Annual Report

On the basis of data collected and analyzed in the course of the evaluation, significant results have clearly been achieved. BCCIC stakeholders interviewed strongly attest to the effectiveness of BCCIC and credit the Council for organizing relevant capacity building activities by collaborating with its member organizations (learning Circles on Istanbul Principles etc.) and for having strengthened its PE during this program notably through its growing partnership with the regions and the education sector and by extending its outreach through social media.” DFATD Evaluation (3.2.3 OECD-DAC Criteria A. Effectiveness). All of this is testament to the hard work of the board, our members, and regional advisory committees and regional coordinators in Prince George, the Comox Valley, Nelson and Kamloops, and finally but not least the staff and team including Jeremy Nemanishen, Lynn Slobogian and Bridgette Watson. As we each move on to our new journeys we can all feel very excited about the foundation we have collaboratively put in place for the new team to move forward.

youth from around the province to increase their global awareness and enhance their leadership as young global citizens.

An initiative of the 8 provincial and regional Councils, the ICN/RCC represents over 400 NGOs.

Inter-Council Network Réseau de Coordination des Conseils (ICN/RCC) In 2013-14, the ICN/RCC conducted the third and final phase of the research program, “Exploring Public Engagement Effectiveness in Canada.” This past year saw the launch of the Global Hive, a public engagement web space that brings together best practices in seven essential thematic areas, with content developed by diverse international development professionals. The space invites practitioners from across the country to explore current tools for engaging global citizens.

To expand its reach and to further connect practitioners with content, the ICN hosted over 20 webinars and a national online conference, with participants from coast to coast. This past year the ICN/RCC laid the groundwork for the upcoming five year project, “Connecting with Canadians Global Citizens Program,” building on the past three years of research and development.
