Art & Community for Sustainable Development A Zine that connects the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to a Vancouver context through arts, culture, and local community initiatives


Alsarah & the Nubatones April 14, 2019 - St. James Hall, Vancouver Alsarah and the Nubatones tours their album 'Manara', a powerful collection of songs about forced displacement, the loss and meaning of home, freedom protest, and reunion with loved ones. The band uses music as a social and political message carrier to speak on the impacts and uncertainties of displacement, immigration and racial discrimination.

Fatoumata Diawara March 20, 2019 - The Grosvenor Theatre, West Vancouver Established as one of the most inventive, fierce female singers in Mali, Fatoumata Diawara tours her second solo album 'Fenfo', meaning 'something to say'. The album focuses on the challenges of migration and family -challenges she experienced firsthand- and her fight for independence by leaving Mali to pursue a career as an actress and singer/songwriter. Through traditional African strings and percussion, 'Fenfo' sheds light on the global migrant/refugee crisis, institutional oppression and works to beautifully humanize migrants.

Music & Theatre Salmon Girl April 6, 2019 - The Waterfront Theatre, Vancouver Presented by Raven Spirit Dance, 'Salmon Girl' is a dance drama story about a young girl discovering the importance of salmon in the natural world and its value to the river. A visually stunning work that shares a First Nations perspective on the importance of Salmon and reflects on consideration of the environment and the human impact on it."

Podcasts "Why decarbonization and decolonization go hand-in-hand" Presented and hosted by MEDIA INDIGENA, an Indigenous-Canadian-run podcast, this podcast episode reflects on the recent IPCC report on the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold, how to compel corporations and the state to respond, indigenous approaches, and questions humanity's relationship to the Earth and with each other. It speaks to the looming crisis of climate change and the importance of collaboration. Episodes are released weekly.

No Little Plans' is a news podcast reporting on Canadian efforts and the country's progress to solve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. To help answer tough questions, the podcast features experts and leaders who are doing the most to help Canada meet the goals.

Tiny Spark' is an independent news program and podcast that reports on philanthropy, nonprofits, international aid and for-profit social good initiatives. From investigating into TOM's shoes to exposing the harm caused by medical volunteers in post-quake Haiti, this podcast is curious to find solutions to global problems and often invites guests to provide insights on the unintended consequences of aid and charity work.

Books & Poetry

Even this Page is White by Vivek Shraya In her debut poetry collection, Shraya confronts the uncomfortable topic of skin, breaking down the barriers that prevent understanding of what it means to be racialized. Unafraid of pushing beyond the simplistic binary of oppressor and other, she lyrically paints the everyday racism coloured people go through in many aspects of society, race-based gender violence, 'whiteness' and white privilege, and systemic racism to life.

Deepwatever Vee by Melanie Siebert Written in a metaphoric movement of rivers, Siebert's debut poetry collection narrates on the loss of land and water around Canada's remote northern rivers, including two of Canada's most threatened rivers, the Athabasca and the North Sasketchewan and the legacy of the Alberta tar sands on downstream communities. It calls attention to the centuriesold colonizing culture approach to land and people, the disappearing wilderness collectively inherited, and the value of natural spaces.

Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth Raworth confronts the 20th century economic model and the ultimate goal of endless growth, arguing that the aim of economic activity should ""make us thrive, whether or not they grow"". She challenges the mainstream circular flow of economics with the doughnut, an economic reality which rings represent where it is sustainable and where it is beyond Earth's environmental limits. Through Doughnut Economics, Rawork aims to help reframe the economy into one that would bring a more just and sustainable world.


Women Who Dig by Trina Moyles

Award-winning, Canadian freelance journalist Trina Moyles takes us through the narratives of female farmers across three continents with captivating photos. It critically examines how women are responding to and increasingly rising up against the injustices of the global food system, and confronts global issues of gender roles, access to land, domestic violence, maternal health, marginalization, and rapid climate change.

Local Initiatives

West End Community Food Hub The West End Community Food Hub is a partnership between Gordon Neighbourhood House and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. The project addresses food insecurity in the West End by providing emergency access to food, educating the community about producing and preparing their own food, and advocating for change in systems that create poverty in our society. With hard work and openness, it recognizes the capabilities of people facing poverty and works to empower them to play an active role in society.

Climate Guides Climate Guides is a mentorship program that inspires mentees and mentors through personal and professional development experiences and contributes to a positive narrative on tackling climate change. These partnerships generate optimistic solutions and support youth as climate leaders.

Pathways to Education Pathways to Education is a nonprofit organization that aims to break the cycle of poverty through education. It provides multiple supports and resources for youth living in low-income communities to help them graduate from high school and prepare them for a successful future. In BC, it currently serves the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona area in Vancouver, and Guildford and Whalley area in Surrey.

CityStudio CityStudio Vancouver is an innovation hub, founded together with SFU and the City of Vancouver, where city staff, students, faculty and community work together to design and launch experimental projects that make Vancouver more sustainable, liveable and enjoyable. With projects from food recovery to furniture design to ecological footprint communication, this inclusive collaboration is designed to inspire creativity and innovation in City Hall and also organically increases engagement, inclusivity, imagination, and partnerships within the city.

CityHive CityHive Vancouver is a youth-driven organization aiming to transform and amplify the way young people are involved in shaping a resilient and sustainable Vancouver. It acts as a platform for youth to share and materialize their ideas and to bridge youth with institutions to collaborate on city-building. It works closely with a network of organizations to provide opportunities for youth and educates youth on city issues and advocacy.

Women Deliver 2019 Conference

The Women Deliver 2019 Conference will be the world's largest conference on gender equality and the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women in the 21st century. With more than 6,000 world leaders, influences, advocates, academics and more presenting knowledge and promoting solutions, it hopes to catalyze advocates working to achieve a more gender equal world. This year the conference will be in Vancouver from June 36 - look for ways to engage in the lead up and during this exciting gathering.

The British Columbia Council for International Cooperation (BCCIC) is a network that engages in sustainable development and social justice issues. We are a membership-based organization made up of interested individuals, international development organizations and practitioners, and civil society organizations in British Columbia, Canada. We are focused on promoting and supporting the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, both locally and globally.
