Design Statement:

This portfolio represents. . . All the projects I have done this semester in Graphic Design 2. Most were assigned, but two are things I created in my own time. Programs used are Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign. All of which were the CS5 products. The material in this portfolio include outlines using the pen tool, photo manipulation, and creative layouts designed to catch someone’s eye.

Line Art Shoe Illustration

Create a Shoe in Illustrator (8 x 5 inches) I needed to take a picture of a shoe off the internet and I needed to outline and color it. The assignment was to see how we used tools within Illustrator to create the details and color. Mainly used the pen tool for this assignment.

Fall Leaves

Tracing the Outline of Leaves in Illustrator (7 x 10 inches.) The purpose of this assignmetn was to become familiar with the pen tool in Illustrator. With the pen tool, one would have to trace the outline of the leaves and then fill them in with various fall colors. Only some, not all of the leaves had to be traced.

Ipod Illustration

Creating/Outlining a Ipod in Illustrator (6.5 x 8 inches) The assignment was to further develop the use of the Pen tool lin Illustrator as well as some other tools like the Ellipse tool. I was to take a picture of an ipod and trace it with the Pen tool. I also had to use the Type tool and to put color in it.

Photo Montage

Gather several items that describeyou and place them together on one page (7.2 x 7.2 inches) The point of the assingment was to show our skill with Photoshop. The assignment taken place after many Photoshop tutorials, so we were to show off that we knew how to use Photoshop correctly. We had to gather items that represent or describe us. Examples could be thing you like or interested in. We were to place them into the same picture, but make it look realistic, like a picture. So we had to add shadows and reflections. We also had to use Free Transform and Distort to make the perspective of some of the items right.

Photo Manipulation

Ta ke a p h o t o a n d m a n i p u l a t e i t (5.4 x 5.8 inches) The point of this assignment was once again to show the development of skill in Photoshop. I had to take a picture and manipulate or distort it in some way, but also make it look “real”. I had taken a picture of a frog and by using the Smudge and Blur tool, I was able to make the frog look like it was melting. I had also used a little Bevel to make the reflection of the liquid more life like. However, it would’ve been easier had I found the Liquify tool earlier.ne es dolorrores essit

Photoshop Tutorial

Find a Photoshop tutorial and complete it (4.5 x 7 inches)The objective of this assignment was to get us into Photoshop. Teach us how to use it. I was to go online and find a Photoshop tutorial to follow. I chose how to make a sphere. I chose it because I thought I could use it later in a different project. While the sphere itself didn’t have any use later in my projects, the Gradient tool did appear in other assignments, so the practice in this one helped me a bit.

K. Davis GD2

Magazine Advertisement

Make a magazine Advertisement with Photoshop and Indesign. (6 x 8 inches) The point of this assignment was to allow us to be creative and come up with eye-catching designs that could help us later if we go into the designing business. I chose the product Bryce 3D to use as my magazine ad. I used a picture of a complicated and abstract art that was created by Bryce 3D as the main selling point and or picture, because anybody interested in it would want to see its 3D capibilites. I added a lot of white space so the eye can rest and added a small column of words to present the product. I also added the actual product on the other side with few plants, representing its ability to create landscaping art.

Admission Ticket

Create an admission ticket for an even t of your choice. (4 x 6 inches) Like the Magazine Advertisement assignment, the point is to be creative and practice Indesign. We had to pick an event and make a ticket for said event with a design that would catch people’s eyes, had all the necessary information that a normal ticket would have and put it all in a way that would look appealing to someone who glanced at it. I had to use color schemes and patterns to help boost its credibility.

Folding

Ta k i n g a p i c t u re a n d fo l d i n g i t (7 x 5 inches) The point of this assignment was to learn how to use Photoshop better. This one is just practice I did on my own. Following a tutorial, I took a picture of some field and used many color effects (Screen, Soft Light, Saturation) to make it look like I was peeling back an old picture and revealing a new one.

Power Button Design

Create something in Photoshohp. (5.6 x 5. 6 inches) This was another thing I had done on my own. I found a tutorial on how to create a power button in photoshop. I used many tools including the Ellipse tool and various Gradients. This was just to further improve my abilities in Photoshop help me later on.

Photo Manipulation DESCRIPTION

For this project we were asked to go online and find a photoshop tutorial that we liked and do it. I picked this one because it looked interesting and it looked like it would challange my skills. This was a very hard project for me becuase I am new to photoshop but I think it turned out pretty good. I really liked this project because it helped me work with the distort feature, becuase you had to make the smoke follow the skull and I really enjoyed doing this project.

After, I played around with the effects in distort and transform, and altered the settings to create a variety of “flowers.

Logo Design

DESCRIPTION The purpose of this project was to create a reasonable logo that communicates well to the audience. I created a logo for a business that I think would be really cool, but probably wouldn’t ever be successful (for obvious reasons). I started out with the vector images of a set of speakers and a tea cup, and the title typed out in a mixture of fonts and sizes. Then I played around with the colors a lot and added in new vectors, and ended up with this.

For this project, I had to take a background image and add in a collage of surrealism items that each represent at least one thing- levitation, juxtaposition, scale change, dislocation, and transformation. I placed all of this images on to the plane backdrop and then transformed them with distort, scale, sheer, and rotate to make it look a little bit more realistic.

Design Statement:

This portfolio represents. . .

The idea that a design just can’t be thrown together, it takes thought, imagination, creativity, and most importantly time. You can’t expect to have a good final project after five minutes of work. Fall Leaves Illustration DESCRIPTION

(6.5 x 6 inches) This was an introduction to using the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. I began with an image of leaves and turned it into a template. The template was at 50% transperency. After setting up the template I traced the egdes of the leaves with the Pen tool. Once I had finished with the tracing I filled in the shapes and arranged them to overlap eachother.

iPod Illustration DESCRIPTION

(6 x 7 inches) This was an extended introduction to the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. The goal was to create an illustration from a real image. In this I used the pen tool to trace most of the objects from the template. Other objects in the illustration were created using the Elipse tool.

Space Eye Photo Manipulation DESCRIPTION

(9 x 7 inches) Here is an example of something I made during my free time. This is an image I made using an online tutorial for the free photo manipulation program Gimp. I strarted with an image of an eye. The clouds are a layer mask on the eye. Next I made the blue lines coming from the eye with the Pen tool. Finally I copied the area around the eyeball and pasted it over the original with layer options set at Luminosity.

Beach Split-toning DESCRIPTION

(6.5 x 4.5 inches) Here is another example of something I made during my free time. This was tutorial for the progrram Gimp. The goal was to take a regular image with various colors and reduce it to a two toned image. I began by creating a set of black and white duplicates of the image. One image was overlayed with a blueish color and merged with the black and white. I did the same with the other image except I used a beige color to overlay with. Finally I changed the opacity of the beige layer to 75%.

Lighting and Scenery DESCRIPTION

(10 x 6 inches) This is another tutorial I completed with Gimp during my free time. I began by using the pen tool to select the original overcast above the castle and deleted it. Next I added the brighter and bolder sky with sun burssting through the clouds. After adding the new background I overlayed a gradient white spot on the closest part of the castle. Finally I overlayed a copy of the castle and made a layer mask to darken areas around the image to create a focal point in the center.

Business Logo Graphic DESCRIPTION

(10 x 4.25 inches) This is a graphic that I made during my free time so that I would later be able to add it to my admission ticket project that I was creating in class. I began by creating the illustration to the left with the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. I brought the design into Adobe Photoshop and added the picture of the crowd behind it. This was a crowd at an event Insomniac produced. Next I typed the name and added a stroke layer style and reduced the layer fill to 0%. I copied the logo and the name, then pasted them underneath themselves upside down. Finally I added a black gradient to fade out the copies.

Eye Photo Manipulation DESCRIPTION

(10.5 x 8 inches) This is something I made during my free time. I started with an image of an eye. I also got a picture of a pygmy marmoset and used the magic wand tool to select the background and delete it. Next I copied the iris and pupil then overlayed it to make it bolder. After this I added the monkey into the pupil and changed the layer to luminosity. Finally I overlayed and blue layer to change the color of the entire image.

Composing a Scene DESCRIPTION

(7 x 6 inches) This project was an in-class tutorial to teach us how to create a scene from various images. I began by cutting out a portion of the fence that needed to be in front of the farmer using the polygon lasso tool, then pasted it on top of him to show that he was behind the fence. This brought his tool behind the fence so I did the same thing and pasted on top of the fence. Finally I copied the layer, added a gaussian blur, then created a layer mask to fade th background out.

Layer Masking with Animals DESCRIPTION

(14 x 10 inches) This was one of my favorite projects in class. The goal was to create one animal out of two different animals using layer masks. I began with the image of a lion. Next I added an image of a Pomeranian dog and created a layer mask to only show the face. After this I used the free tronsfrom tool to match it up to the lions face. Finally I added a duplicate of the lion to the top of the dog and made another layer mask to blend them better.

Layer Masking with Animals DESCRIPTION

(12 x 8 inches) This is the projet that I enjoted most during Grephic Design 2 this semester. This was another photo manipulation using layer masks. I began with the image of the black and white hand. Next I placed a picture of a killer whale on top of the hand and created a layer mask. I desaturated the image of the whale to match with the original black and white hand photo. Finally I added a duplicate of the hand, made a layer mask from it, and blanded the images.

Magazine Advertisement DESCRIPTION

(7.25 x 9.75 inches) This project was our introduction to Adobe InDesign. In this we needed to create a magazine ad using different marketing tools including this like certain words, grid layouts, and white space. This is the final version of 5 different templates that I made for this magazine design. I chose this one because in my opinion it captures the readers attention to the main image of the vehicle.
