ANTOINE SEMENYO
AGE: 21 POSITION: Forward JOINED: September 2017
DID YOU KNOW? Semenyo’s first three goals for the club came in cup competitions (Carabao Cup and FA Cup), with his first league goal coming against today’s opponents at the Liberty Stadium last season. It came in the 97th minute after Swans goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, upon receiving a pass from Jay Fulton, was closed down by Semenyo and the keeper’s clearance ricocheted off the forward back into the open net. The signing from SGS College went on to score in bizarre similar fashion a few weeks later when the Robins beat Birmingham City 3-0 at St Andrew’s. A
warm welcome to you all as we prepare for a big night under the lights here at Ashton Gate. It’s an occasion I am very much looking forward to and I know it will be a cracking atmosphere. Tonight we remember those who are sadly no longer with us. We have lost many supporters, young and old, during the coronavirus pandemic and they are remembered here at Ashton Gate. Names and photos of our loved ones will be displayed on the big screens, on the LED boards and as many as we could inside the digital matchday programme too.
Tuesday night but, backed by a sold-out away end of 2,178 supporters, we were able to secure those long-awaited three points. We took a two-goal lead and conceded another avoidable goal, as well as another late one, to make it a more nerve-racking experience. We saw the game out and got the rewards for a totally committed performance and that’s pivotal for the players.
AT READING WE GOT THE REWARDS FOR A TOTALLY COMMITTED PERFORMANCE AND THAT'S PIVOTAL FOR THE PLAYERS
Our hearts go out to everyone and our thoughts remain with the friends and families who have suffered such tragic losses. We welcome Russell Martin, his players, staff and all Swansea City supporters to Ashton Gate for this Sky Bet Championship fixture. I know they will be setting out to put their early disappointing run of form to an end so I expect it to be a challenging affair. Similarly, we were still searching for our first win of the season when we travelled to Reading on
At 3-2 I’m sure you were probably thinking ‘here we go again’ and there was certainly some of that anxiety shared on the touchline. However, that was a really good win for us and it was important that we looked back over what we did well and what we didn't do well – that’s something we do with all results.
A special mention goes to Cameron Pring, who had a superb game on his Championship debut. He has not felt part of this club for a long time but he has done so well to put himself into contention. He received a wonderful round of applause in the dressing room after the game and that is testament to what he did on the night. Tonight is a chance to build on that performance and result, so please help us make it an enjoyable night and I hope you enjoy the game. Cheers, Nige

V HEAD TO HEAD The Robins boast quite a decent home record over the Swans, that last defeat in BS3 coming in 2011. Prior to that, City hadn’t lost at Ashton Gate since a League Cup meeting in August 1993. Our home record versus the Swans since then reads: P 12 | W 7 | D4 | L1. Last season's home game ended in a 1-1 draw.

SWANSEA CITY KEY PLAYER
JAMIE PATERSON City supporters will know all about the tricky and energetic forward. He spent five seasons with the Robins, having signed from Nottingham Forest in 2016, coincidentally going on to score his first of 26 goals against his former employers in BS3. Injuries hampered his run of games at times but moments which stand out from his time in red-and-white include a special strike in a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane, a perfect free kick at Millwall and a stunning tight-angle finish at Middlesbrough.

DID YOU KNOW? T’S NOT BEEN THE START TO A NEW SEASON MANAGER RUSSELL MARTIN WOULD HAVE HAD IN MIND.
The new boss, having arrived from MK Dons prior to the new campaign, suffered an opening day loss to Blackburn Rovers and since then has overseen one draw and one defeat at home. There were better fortunes in Round One of the Carabao Cup, as goals from Joel Latibeaudiere, Ben Cabango and Joel Piroe secured a 3-0 win to set up a Round Two fixture against Plymouth Argyle. It’s going to take time for the new manager to bed in, alongside his staff who also made the move from MK Dons to South Wales. Former Bristol City Under-23s Manager Luke Williams was part of the team to follow Martin, whose possession and passing style were commended as a good fit for the Swans.
Leon Britton made 527 appearances for Swansea over three spells (2002/03 loan, 2003-2010, 2011-2018). Alongside former Swans teammates Alan Tate and Garry Monk, Britton is one of a handful of players to have represented a club in all four divisions of the English football pyramid.
Martin was appointed just six days before the start of the new season following the departure in July of Steve Cooper, who had led the Swans to two successive top six finishes during his time in charge. He’ll need to dig out results if they are to mount another play-off or promotion bid, and go one step further following May’s Wembley disappointment after the 2-0 defeat to Brentford. As Martin looks to make his mark, he has three former Robins players in his ranks. Jamie Paterson and Liam Walsh signed for the club in the summer, joining Korey Smith who made 40 appearances in his debut season for the Swans after moving across the Severn in 2020. It remains to be seen if midfielder Walsh will return from injury for Friday night’s encounter in BS3, but Paterson has featured in all three league games so far which included a goal on his debut. A stalwart for City, Smith remains a doubt for the match at Ashton Gate after suffering a calf injury in the season opener against Blackburn Rovers.
3Robins return? Liam Walsh is one of three ex-Cty stars in the Swansea squad. Former Robins Under-23 Manager Luke Williams (inset) is also part of the backroom team.

He would be reunited with Nigel Pearson, who he knew from their time together at Leicester City, and the move flourished from there.
“When I heard Nigel got the job as manager I thought this could be something for me,” King told T H E R O B N S . “I’ve worked with the gaffer before, we know all about each other and I saw the potential for a chance to come in during a transitional period.
“It felt like the perfect fit having worked with the manager previously and this is a club I had wanted to play for, so I gave him a call and we shared our thoughts.
“I hadn’t played much last season, so I came in just to train at first. Nigel wanted to see where I was at and if I still had the hunger. I was and still am hungrier more than ever after the last couple of years which 4

I LOVE PLAYING IN FRONT OF THE SUPPORTERS – I WAS ONE OF THEM IN THE STANDS ONCE. 4 haven’t been easy, but since I’ve been here I’ve loved it. I’m back playing, contributing to the team, I’m happy and feeling the best I have felt for a long time.”
“If I can just keep contributing however I can, through goals and assists, that’s great but it’s about us as a team getting as many wins as possible.”
King’s debut came at home in the 1-1 draw with Blackpool on the opening day of the season, before he headed in his first goal for the club away at Middlesbrough – a poignant moment for a man with City at his heart.
City now head into Friday night’s game off the back of their first win of the season at Reading. For King, this could be his first taste of football under the Ashton Gate lights and it’s a moment he is looking forward to both professionally and as a fan.
“I’ve followed the club for many years. I used to watch games with my dad, my uncle and my brother so I’ve always kept an eye on the club and therefore the goal was an unbelievable feeling.
“I always want to win as a professional footballer but there’s the emotional attachment too because I go through it all as a supporter. It’s hard but it makes the good times even better!
“Now I’d love to score at home in front of the fans and celebrate in front of the Dolman Stand where I used to sit myself. That will be nice.
“Watching City games as a kid I would think: ‘Could I score for this team one day?’ Now I just want to score at home but having played at Ashton Gate

already was an amazing feeling. I love playing in front of supporters and I was one of them in the stands once. I’m not taking this opportunity for granted and I’m loving my football again. “It’s a massive occasion playing at home under the lights. I always think that playing first at the weekend is an advantage because you’re putting pressure on the other teams before they’ve kicked a ball. We hope to get our own result sorted first and then look to other results. “There’s always something special about a night game but we know we’re up against a good team who have been in the play-offs in recent seasons. They have a new manager who plays a good brand of football but at home we must believe we can beat anyone and, whether I’m okay to make the team or not, I’m sure it’s going to be a brilliant atmosphere.”

John went straight into the team for the 1971/72 season and, in only his second game at Sheffield Wednesday, scored in a 5-1 win. His dream start was followed by 33 appearances and one more goal. He played another 33 matches in 1972/73, scoring five goals and was voted Player of the Year. By then former Ferndale teammate Eddie Woods had joined City. They played together against
Portsmouth and Nottingham Forest in March – Woods’ only first team appearances. John continues: “I often talk about my goal against Manchester United [at Ashton Gate on November 9th 1974]. The ball came in from the right, Keith Fear headed it back to me and I smashed it into the net for the only goal of the game —with my left foot!”
With Gerry Gow and Jimmy Mann playing more games in John’s position, a bad injury reduced him to a few games in his last season – City's promotion year of 1975/76. He joined Newport County in 1976, Barry Town two years later before ending up at his then hometown club Ton Pentre, whom he managed for 20 years.

TERRY COOPER'S TIME IN CHARGE OF THE ROBINS
I
t was July 1982. The Rolling Stones had excited a packed 35,123 crowd at Ashton Gate a few weeks earlier. Terry Cooper, who had made 11 league appearances for Bristol City 1978/80, was returning as player/manager. Could he bring more excitement and winning football back on the pitch? After three successive relegations, in Division Four for the first time, with most senior players sold and still in dire financial straits, it was a big ask. But Terry was about to embark on a quest which would bring promotion after two seasons and take the club to a Wembley final for the first time. How did he do it? After a summer’s hard graft, Terry brought in Clive Middlemass as his assistant and three influential players: 30-year-old winger Alan Crawford from Chesterfield, forward Glyn Riley (aged 23 from Barnsley) and returning City legend Tom Ritchie (30, Sunderland), together with a sprinkling of players from local non-league clubs. Ritchie had made 321

league appearances for City scoring 77 goals from 1969 to January 1981, before leaving for Sunderland. Goalkeeper John Shaw and Jon Economou were also re-signed to a squad totalling just 15 players.
On the opening day of the 1982/83 season, Riley scored in the 2-1 home win over Hull City. A 2-2 draw at Tranmere Rovers followed with Ritchie scoring a brace. Ripples of doubt began to creep in with a 4-1 defeat at Crewe Alexandra, after which Cooper admitted: “We forgot the basics.”
Returning to Ashton Gate, Ritchie then missed a penalty in a scoreless draw with Blackpool. Then came City’s humiliating 7-1 mauling at Northampton Town, which drew everyone’s attention to the task in hand. It was not going to be easy…

Wales the following season was more appealing to some of the players than a visit to Notts County. Indeed, so great was this opinion among the City faithful that the esteemed local journalist David Foot, in the Pink ‘Un, felt it necessary to deny such a scenario. It would, however, seem that the spectators were correct as many years later City’s George Walker remarked that he was told to take it easy after firing in the early opener and it can be considered strange that two seasons later Swansea fielded a team of youngsters against the struggling Robins at the Vetch.
Unfortunately, City were unable to take advantage of this helping hand, which followed on from their highly suspicious Easter double over Ipswich, and rumours circulating of inducements being refused by both Huddersfield Town and Leyton Orient. O
ur first superstar here at Ashton Gate was undoubtedly Billy Wedlock, the diminutive five foot, six-and-a-half inch dynamo of the pre-First World War era who remains our most capped England player to date. Aged 82, here he recalls to John Macadam from Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly in April 1963 what game gave him the most pleasure: “It was between the Amateurs and Professionals at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, and played on a Monday. We Professionals won by 4-2, and it was through this match that I got my chance to play for England.” Wedlock went on to set a record of 25 consecutive caps between February 16th 1907 versus Ireland, and March 23rd 1912 against Scotland. He won his 26th and final cap on March 16th 1914 against Wales.
However, it was touch and go for Billy as he was not the original choice – Newcastle’s Colin Veitch was already pencilled in. “But Veitch was injured in a league game on Saturday. Late on Saturday night, a telegram was sent to tell me I was needed at Bramall Lane on Monday. But because I had been away from Bristol playing for my own club, that information did not get to me until the early hours of Sunday,” Wedlock was quoted.
With no trains running from Bristol to Yorkshire that day, time was of the essence, and it was doubtful if Wedlock would make the game at all. The only option was the next train on Monday morning and he just about made it for kick-off! “I changed into my football clothes on the train, and stepped out at Sheffield all ready to take the field. It’s a fair stretch from the station to Bramall Lane, and there were only a few minutes to the kick-off. But wires had been

at work while I was on the train,” he said. “I thought I would not be able to do myself justice in that game after all the rush and worry of getting across country, but I evidently pleased those who chose our teams, for it was this match that was my stepping stone to the English eleven.” All this happened in December 1906 and two months later Billy, aged 26, took the field at Goodison Park to make his first England appearance in a 1-0 win over Ireland. In his seven-year England career Wedlock got on the score sheet twice, the first coming in a 7-1 thumping of Wales on March 16th 1908.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
