ANDI WEIMANN
AGE: 30 POSITION: Forward JOINED: July 2018
DID YOU KNOW? Andreas Weimann has scored 39 goals with 19 assists in 204 Premier League appearances, all for Aston Villa between 2010/11 and 2014/15. His appearances equate to 7,226 minutes in the Premier League! He has only scored one hat-trick in his career and that came in the 2018/19 campaign as he fired City to a 3-2 away win at Sheffield United. His first was a looping header, before a karate-style finish and a superb near-post strike following a strong drive forward and one-two with Famara Diédhiou. He has scored two braces in the current campaign (v Reading and Cardiff City) but he is still seeking his second City hat-trick.

t’s great to return to Ashton Gate after the international break. Our last game against Cardiff City was one in which our performance was rewarded with the right result and this was a very important statement of intent that we must replicate again against Preston North End. We come up against a very tough opponent in Preston but in turn they know we will be no pushovers either, so please play your part in creating a difficult environment for away teams when visiting Ashton Gate. Yes, we are a club with strong values and we extend a warm welcome to our visitors, but when we cross the line the time to compete and give your all begins, so your support is paramount to us being successful.
also prudent to look for players for the future from elsewhere too. Now the transfer window has closed, I am pleased with where the squad is at; we have a couple of players returning from injuries, so the competition is rife and that is exactly what you want. Finally, a very special mention must go to our Head of Player Logistics, Matt Parsons. He has, along with other staff on away trips, been taking food after the players’ evening meals to homeless shelters and other refuges. His vision is for other clubs to do similar and it’s a brilliant initiative from a very humble man.
WE WILL ALWAYS STRIVE TO GIVE YOU ALL THE COMMITMENT AND DRIVE NEEDED IN GAMES, AND BE GOOD TO WATCH
We will always strive to give you all the commitment and drive needed in games, and be good to watch whenever possible, and in turn we hope you can lift us when we need it. Please extend a warm welcome to George Tanner who we have signed from Carlisle United. He is a player for our future but one I know will also push for a starting position this season too. Our Academy are brilliant at producing homegrown talent, but it is
To put things into perspective, we donate around 50 food boxes every away game which equates to 1,150 meals across the season for those who are less fortunate. If every EFL club did this, collectively we would be handing out a staggering 82,800 meals across the season. Now our full focus is on the next batch of games this September and it all starts against Preston today. I hope you enjoy the game! Nige

However, goals from Famara Diédhiou and Zak Vyner broke that duck, helping the Robins secure a first home win over the Lilywhites since a 4-2 victory in 2010 (see front cover).

EMIL RIIS JAKOBSEN The former Denmark Under-21 international has certainly come into his own this season. The 23-year-old has scored five goals split between two in the Championship and three in the Carabao Cup, with his side set to face Cheltenham Town in Round Three later this month. His first league goal of the season came on the opening day as Preston suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Hull City but he was back on the scoresheet in a 3-1 win over Swansea City last time out. Jakobsen’s youth career started at Danish outfit Randers before a move to Derby County’s Academy setup in 2015 where he helped the Under-23s win the Premier League 2 Division One title. Following a brief loan spell at VVV-Venlo, he went back to Randers in June 2018 where he became a first team regular. He signed for Preston in October 2020, scoring three goals in 39 games by the end of the campaign.

DID YOU KNOW?
Preston North End were the first team to win the domestic ‘double’ in England winning both the inaugural First Division and FA Cup in 1888/89. They became the original ‘Invincibles’ having gone that league campaign unbeaten (27 games).
RESTON ENDED THE 2020/21 CAMPAIGN WITH THE JOINT-BEST FORM IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP, WITH ONE DRAW AND FOUR WINS FROM THE FINAL FIVE GAMES – A STREAK ONLY MATCHED BY PROMOTION-WINNERS BRENTFORD. It was a run which helped lift the Lilywhites to 13th place come the final league standings and led to the permanent appointment of former first team coach Frankie McAvoy as Head Coach. However, a crushing 4-1 defeat by newly-promoted Hull City on the opening day of the new campaign was hardly the start the club would have hoped for, especially in front of their returning fanbase. In fact, the Lilywhites lost their first three league games with narrow defeats to Reading (2-1) and Middlesbrough (1-0) – although both of those came on the road as they seek a first away league win of the campaign. There has been improved form in the Carabao Cup, with wins over Mansfield Town (3-0) and Morecambe (4-2) helping Preston advance into Round Three where they face League One newcomers Cheltenham Town.
German defender Patrick Bauer (far right) scores the winner for the Lilywhites during their 1-0 home win over Peterborough United last month.
And confidence will have now begun to flow through Preston’s veins as they now head to BS3 having won their last three games in all competitions. They beat Peterborough United 1-0 and Swansea City 3-1 either side of that cup victory over Morecambe and it remains to be seen if the international break has been a potential hindrance rather than an opportunity to recharge.
The Lancashire club – who will finally renew their rivalry with neighbours Blackpool this season after a gap of eight years – released eight players over the summer, which also saw the retirement of veteran midfielder Paul Gallagher. Arrivals included the loan signing of Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg and former England youth midfielder Izzy Brown from Chelsea.

UP AND RUNNING
A crowd of 18,739 witnessed City’s return to competitive action at Ashton Gate, though our long-awaited first day back celebrations with fans were tainted just a little when Blackpool secured a last-gasp equaliser.
We exited the Carabao Cup on penalties despite Saikou Janneh scoring his first goals for the club, while performances in the league didn’t always justify our results. We suffered defeats to Middlesbrough and Swansea City but the players dug deep to record satisfying wins against Reading and Cardiff City. We now go in search of picking up where we left off in South Wales, finding consistency and putting an unwanted home record to bed... 16 | T H E R O B N S Preston North End

It was a painstaking road to recovery but the Austrian kept a positive attitude as he looked to come back stronger, and he’s certainly done just that. “I am pleased with my start to the season,” Weimann told T H E R O B N S . “It was nice to play that

CELEBRATING WITH THE FANS, GETTING THE WIN IN THE DERBY WAS VERY SPECIAL 4 forward to the recovery but I was trying to embrace it as much as I could. I worked with Gill Holt every day in the physio room and in the gym with Dell (Derrick Bonsu). I enjoyed it as much as I could and I made sure I came in every day and did everything I could. “I did a selfie video showing people what it was like at the time of my operation and the days after it, how I felt and the progress I made when I got home: everything from my first steps walking, being back at the training ground, in the gym and lifting weights for the first time. It’s something for me to look back on, to see how I got through it and to be where I am now. “I was lucky in the sense that I didn’t have a setback. I’ve heard stories of people’s knees remaining swollen or sore, or hamstrings being sore after skin graft surgery. Mine went as perfect as it could

have and that’s helped me mentally too. The longest part was when I was back on the grass. I was out there after four months or so but I still had another couple of months ahead of me. I couldn’t rush back to playing so being out there but knowing I was still some way off was the hardest bit.” With all that behind him, Weimann has hit the ground running with four goals to his name so far – two braces in wins against Reading and Cardiff City. His volleyed winner in South Wales last time out is his standout strike. “The goal itself was nice with how I connected with the volley but then it was the scenes after and celebrating with the fans. Getting the win in the derby was very special,” he said. “I think it’s been a good start and as was mentioned before the Cardiff game we didn’t have the amount of points we think we

deserved. Performances, albeit Middlesbrough away, had been pretty good so I think the Cardiff game was important in terms of putting in another good performance but also getting the points to go with it.” Now City get set to face Preston North End at Ashton Gate and the group are in confident spirits to secure that first win at home. Weimann continued: “We’ve carried on how we’ve prepared for every game. We know we haven’t won at home since January and it’s all we want to do in front of our own fans and I think the performances have merited it. Against Blackpool we were 10 seconds away from getting that win and against Swansea we deserved more, so performances have been there. If we can take that into Preston, then we have a great chance of picking up the three points at home. “Everyone is in a good place and we’re all good to go.”

PAUL GAINEY PROFILES GERMAN WINGER ‘ALEC’ EISENTRÄGER
A
lois ‘Alec’ Eisenträger fashioned a career as a dazzling inside forward/ winger. The diminutive yet muscularly-built German had come to England as a prisoner of war. City fan Paul Gainey considers his impact:
“His dribbling and crossing skills were put to splendid effect on the wing but he was also a firm tackler with a fierce long-range shot. While at City he lived in a club house in Dursley Road, Shirehampton and would catch the bus to the ground on Saturdays alongside the supporters.
“Eisenträger won over supporters as a ball artist, whose smooth control, deft flicks and touches of showmanship – including the rarely seen at the time bicycle kick – gave an exciting new dimension to City’s attack.
“After 229 appearances, scoring 47 goals, he joined Merthyr Tydfil in 1958 then moved to Chelmsford City in 1959. He used to travel to Chelmsford by train and play cards on the journey. Being a really good player, he once said he earned more on the way to the game than he was paid for the actual match. He would then tip the waiter heavily and they would cook a steak for him on the return journey.
"Having scored 200 goals for Trowbridge Town, Bob Wright signed him in January 1950 and he made his league debut that month. Two weeks later he netted four goals in a 6-0 home trouncing of Newport County.
“He had played one reserve game for his hometown club Hamburger Sport-Verein, when he was called up into the Luftwaffe in 1943 aged 16 and within three months was captured at Breda in Holland. He was brought to England in February 1945 and joined Trowbridge Town while residing at a local PoW camp. He was working on a local farm but was able to train with his teammates two mornings a week.
“On retirement from football, he ended his working life at Cam Gears in Clevedon, then his home town, where he died aged 90 in 2017. The company had a good football team and it was not long before Alex was persuaded to manage the side.” Eisenträger with club president Marina Dolman in 2011. Far left: As a young boy in Hamburg.

TERRY COOPER'S TIME IN CHARGE OF THE ROBINS
C
ity’s humiliating 7-1 mauling at Northampton Town on September 19th 1982 caused Terry Cooper to revise his ideas.
Youngsters were getting their chance and Nyrere Kelly became City’s youngest-ever player when, aged 16 years 244 days, he came on as substitute at Hartlepool United on 16th October. He would only make one more start and four substitute appearances, however, before leaving at the end of the season for non-league football. One week later City managed to turn the table on its head as visitors – and Division Four leaders – Wimbledon were humbled 4-2 at Ashton Gate. Chief destroyer on the day was Glyn Riley, who scored a hat-trick. Riley went on to become Player-of-the-Year and top goal-scorer with 16 goals.
That was a one-off result as City briefly propped up the Football League in October then did so again for two weeks after the 1-0 defeat at Rochdale on December
Top of the page: Glyn Riley scores one of his hat-trick goals against Wimbledon. Left: City's then youngest-ever player Nyrere Kelly – the record stood for almost 18 years. Right: Fellow 16-year-old debutant Andy Llewellyn.
4th. That day also marked the debut of Andy Llewellyn at 16 years and 281 days; he would go on to make over 300 league appearances for the Robins before leaving in 1994. A 2-2 draw at Bury a fortnight later was enough to lift them to 23rd. And, at the turn of the year, the team began to pick up a steady flow of wins, which would turn the tide in their favour.
From mid-March a run of five wins and four draws lifted the club into mid-table security and they eventually finished in 14th place. The worst was over and we could look forward in hope in the next season…

“And it was because Albert Johanneson was injured that manager Don Revie sprang the shock news when Leeds were due to play Swansea Town. This was the game that could clinch promotion from the Second Division for Leeds; a vital game, obviously. And ‘the Boss’ shook people when he announced that I would be Albert Johanneson’s replacement on the left wing, for this match.”
It had been a long road for Terry who had a trial for Wolves before he was spotted playing for Ferrybridge Amateurs. He joined Leeds in May 1961 and turned professional in July 1962. Eighteen months before his debut, Cooper had initially been a forward.
“Just before the game against Swansea, he [Revie] brought me into the attack again. I was 19, and although I had tasted the big-time atmosphere when I played in the second half of a game against Juventus, this was something different again. For it was my League debut.”
The match ended in a 3-0 win for the Peacocks, who went up as Division Two Champions. However, Terry had to wait until regular full-back, Willie Bell, was transferred to Leicester City in 1967 before he got his chance to establish himself in the first team. The main attribute to his game was drawn from his days as a winger, thus enabling him to assist the attack with his overlapping runs. “Now I’m recognised as the regular first-team left-back. And my fortunes have taken a decided turn for the better. In March 1968, Leeds were at Wembley for the second time in four years. The first was when we lost to Liverpool, in the FA Cup final.
"The second time was in the League Cup final, against Arsenal, when we won, by the only goal of the game. And guess who scored it – yes, I did! And I was playing at left-back, too.”

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
