Prepare to be amazed. Not only by 50th Parallel’s unique, award-winning wines, but by its newly completed facilities. A 200-metre-long building, constructed of concrete and steel at one end, evolves into glass at the other. A 12-metre, one-of-a-kind cantilevered canopy floats out over indoor and outdoor restaurants and a transparent tasting room.

Curtis Krouzel and Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel had a dream to build a wine destination, and they are fulfilling that dream. In 2009, they took possession of 61 acres on Okanagan Lake, which Curtis describes as “probably the brightest vineyard site in the world.” Sixteen hours of daylight in the summer and a second sun-effect from reflection off the lake makes the vineyard perfect for growing light-sensitive Pinot Noir.

In the early days, they worked from a Quonset hut with no flush toilet, no running water and a single light. “It was full-on farming. We just began with shovels and started digging,” Sheri-Lee said.

Inside the winery, there are reminders of those early days. The

tasting bar is clad with metal siding from the hut’s roof, and the bar top is constructed from its wooden beams. In a picture of Curtis’ hands, his fingers are bandaged, and dirt is ground deeply into every crease. What’s missing is a photo of Sheri-Lee’s shoulders, bruised from hauling infinite rows of irrigation lines.

“We focus on our wines and the experiences around them,” said Sheri-Lee. Having toured the winery, I’m convinced they’ve thought of everything. There are intimate spaces throughout. There’s the infinity event pad perched atop the

vineyard overlooking the lake — a showcase for the wines and culinary delights during weddings, corporate events and education seminars.

There’s also a private Green Room — a cosy spot tucked off the outdoor restaurant with its own private bathroom and bar service — where brides can relax before a wedding ceremony or where guests can hold small private dinners, meetings, or special events.

In the new tasting room, visitors can sample and purchase the estates wines: Pinot Noir, pinot gris, Riesling, gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and rosé. New releases include the pinot gris — Sheri-Lee’s favourite — which can be enjoyed by itself or with just about any type of food. Curtis calls the Riesling “a real flagship for the varietal.” He attributes its crisp, clean taste to the pink granite terroir and wholebunch pressing.

To achieve the refreshing taste and beautiful aromatics in the rosé, winemaker Matthew Fortuna uses Pinot Noir grapes grown specifically for rosé. On the vine, the berries are plumped up, giving them a more ripe, red berry profile.

The Pinot Noir is the winery’s specialty. The current release reflects the heat of the 2015 summer — 30 days over 40 Celsius in some areas. It’s a robust vintage with intense black fruit, which may not be present in typical seasons.

organic gardener extraordinaire, Eric Feehely, in the property’s culinary gardens. The 90-seat, regionalseasonal restaurant showcases its outdoor kitchen with cuisine prepared in the wood-fired oven.

Sheri-Lee and Curtis explained that the restaurant’s name, BLOCK ONE, represents the first vineyard planted in 2009.

“It taught us to be farmers; to be one with the land. There are things we will never experience again.

That vineyard block represents the past — the starting point, getting our hands dirty, all the firsts of our business.”

It also represents the future as it now produces some of the estate’s finest fruit for their international award-winning wines.

On May 12, from 11 am to 2 pm, celebrate the Spring Wine Festival with 50th Parallel’s Grape to Glass tour led by Curtis and followed by a private barrel tasting with winemaker Matthew Fortuna. Guests will get a sneak preview of the new menu during lunch with Chef Kai Koroll.

The grand opening is scheduled for mid-May. Stay tuned.

Dining Downtown Kelowna just got brighter with the arrival of Sunny’s — A Modern Diner at 235 Bernard Avenue across from the sails and waterfront.

RauDZ Creative Concepts Ltd. (RCC), owned by dynamic team Audrey Surrao and Chef Rod Butters, launched this addition to its restaurant portfolio this April. Located around the corner from other RCC hotspots RauDZ Regional Table and micro bar & bites, Sunny’s presents fresh, innovative takes on classic diner fare by a culinary team lead by award-winning Chef Butters.

It’s named after a canine restaurant muse, Sunny, a beautiful golden retriever.

In short order, you’ll be barking out diner lingo, too, such as “Cluck and Grunt” for an order of eggs and bacon. “Two Cows, make ‘em cry” gets a double-stack burger with onions along with “Dog Soup,” aka water.

Chef Butter admits, “I’ve wanted a diner concept for many years so when this space close to the lake on the revitalized Bernard Avenue became available, timing was perfect to expand our culinary creativity.”

True to RCC style, detail delves beyond the kitchen and deep into the décor. The floor plan is long and narrow, reminiscent of the pre-fab, stainless-steel dining cars of the original diners. Tim Bullinger, Arca 3 Design, gave the small space a decidedly modern twist while addressing the craving for nostalgia by framing it with a reclaimed brick wall and soaring,

20-foot ceiling, topped with wooden timbers.

Grab a spot at the stainless-steel counter to watch the open kitchen as traditional diner theatre unfolds. Or select a table and feast on vintage Okanagan sunshine/lakeside memorabilia, such as water skis and reclaimed wood from boats that surrounds the bar. Plus, at the back of the space, there’s a “living” green wall. There’s also a nod to BC and Alberta tourist hotspots and hometowns on vintage pennants posted throughout.

Similar in size to micro bar & bites, Sunny’s is small, while supersized in impact.

As patio weather arrives, Sunny’s will be rolling up the “garage door” to expand the seating capacity. For now, it’s exclusively breakfast and lunch served, until those lazy, hazy, long days of summer arrive and then dinner service will be added.

Doors open daily at 7:30 am, and while lunch service starts at 11 am, you can have breakfast all day. There’s $1 Coffee Hour until 8:30 am, and a Power Hour from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in which “Hail! Caesar” cocktails are discounted $2. The menu descriptions entertain with tantalizing selections. Hmm, which Adult Milkshake should I order next?

In keeping with the fun, there’s musical entertainment. Working with Underground Music downtown, a collection of albums was curated. Spin your favourite tune on the provided record player for a suggested 25-cent donation to the SPCA.

A little bit of l ve We are blessed to have such fertile soil, amazing grape growers and farmers, and talented vintners and chefs throughout BC. I’m lucky in that I get to know a bit about what goes on behind the scenes at many of our BC wineries.

In this issue, I want to acknowledge all those wonderful people who spend their time and money giving back to the community and the land, in many ways. The wineries of the Naramata Bench recently held their spring release at the ReWined event in Victoria to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of BC & The Yukon.

Chefs, wineries and myriad volunteers pulled off this amazing event, which will benefit children throughout the year through Make-A-Wish. The foundation granted 130 wishes last year alone to kids in BC & The Yukon battling critical illnesses, and has granted over 2,000 wishes in its 35-year history.

In the Okanagan, wineries such as Tinhorn Creek, Lunessence, Tantalus and Spadefoot, belong to the Okanagan Similkameen Stewardship group. They support and assist in conservation, restoration and enhancement of important wildlife habitat throughout the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys. In other areas throughout BC, farmers and grape growers, winemakers and wineries, also act as stewards for the land. You’ll find the love of wine-making usually equates to a love of the land and the creatures and plants that live on it.

I don’t have nearly enough room to list all of the great things our wineries and farmers do to give back in their communities. Some donate to the arts, children’s charities and local charities. Others donate their time and land for fundraising events like Feast of Fields in the Okanagan, Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver.

When you go wine tasting this spring, find out what else your favourite winery is involved in. I believe we have so many award-winning wines here in BC because the people involved in making these wines put a little bit of love in each bottle.

Ricco Bambino’s delivery truck is primed, painted and ready to roll. The new wine delivery vehicle is a Piaggio Ape (pronounced aH pay) and will be hard to miss. This soft, pastel pink wine wagon picks up your wine at the winery and delivers it directly to your door in Kelowna. Think of it as your emergency wine delivery angel.

The winery’s interior is a pleasant expression of pastel pink walls and crushed velvet seating accented by white oak, marble and brass. The space has a sense of elegance and a good dose of opulence.

“We chose pink because it exudes feelings of happiness, and playfulness, and it represents rosé wine, of which we are a huge fan,” said owner Jason Alton. “The essence behind our brand is new/nostalgic. The pastel warm colours give the winery a warm and inviting ambiance.”

You may also notice the music playing in the background. That’s also a big part of the Ricco Bambino experience.

“It will be a curated collection of everyone’s favourite music from the late ‘70s to current. It will keep you

groovin’ late into the evening when the tasting room transforms into a wine and cocktail bar.”

The wide-open space allows a full view of the three concrete, tulip tanks. Take a tour of the entire winery without leaving the room. For a more in-depth experience, Ricco Bambino’s sommelier will walk you through the wine-making process and their portfolio of living wines.

“We like to educate through visuals,” said Alton. “It’s important for our customers to understand we are a boutique winery using organic grapes and wild yeasts. We do not manipulate our wines, nor try to make them taste like something from France or California. We are proud to be making Okanagan wines and we want them to taste like Okanagan wines.”

Bottles roll off the line May 1st, just in time for Spring Wine Fest. That’s also when Ricco Bambino opens the doors for everyone to come and enjoy his wine and caviar… yes… caviar!

Sip and savour inside or out on the patio with its wall of cascading plants.

This is where the unique bar menu kicks it up a notch.

“I believe we will be the only winery offering caviar,” said Alton. “We serve

Northern Divine organic caviar on a kettle chip with crème fresche. You can also enjoy some crunchy Marcona almonds, Castelvetrano olives or kettle chips on their own. It all goes great with our portfolio of expressive red, white, rosé and sparkling wines.”

Ricco Bambino has a sit-down wine menu for private tastings at your table. There are two tasting experiences: three 2-oz. pours or six 2-oz. pours, enabling visitors to experience everything on offer.

Cocktails are available for non-wine loving guests. They also have Italian spritzers and champagne cocktails that include: fresh Bellini made with organic, local peaches and the Kicked out of the Country Club sparkling wine, a rosini, with fresh local strawberries, and the Very Troubled Child rosé sparkling wine. You can even get a negroni, margarita or a mai tai. To top it off, they have a rotating beer menu, one local, and one Italian, that changes weekly.

The Ricco Bambino winery reflects a push towards sustainability and using organic whenever possible. There are no plastic straws here. Instead, there are glass straws that you can purchase. You can also buy limited

edition Ricco Bambino pink-stemmed Riedel glassware, T-shirts and hats, with more unique items to be released in the months to come.

The wines here are made with a light hand. Organic grapes are handharvested along with the natural yeasts found on the grapes. They are then fermented and aged in stainless steel and/or concrete tanks — no oak.

“We harvest from September to late November and in addition to our table wines, we will be offering two Charmat-style sparkling wines and two traditional style sparkling wines,” said Alton.

The winery also plans on doing a small product run of Pétillant Naturel or Pét-Nat wine.

“Every single bottle will come out a little different,” he explained. “We bottle the wine before it finishes its first fermentation. Carbon dioxide is then produced from the natural sugars in the wine. The result is a rustic and sparkling wine that at times can be an explosive little bomb!”

Kalala Winery Chardonnay Shines Again on

World Stage

As spring heralds rebirth and inspiration, SpearHead Winery is excited to welcome Grant Stanley, a highly esteemed BC winemaker as the new winemaker/general manager. He’ll be hands-on in vineyard and winemaking operations and will manage the winery.

Stanley launched his winemaking career in New Zealand where he worked for 10 years. During that time, he spent a few harvests in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, working with leading Pinot Noir producers. Since 2003, he has been in the Okanagan establishing himself as a premier BC winemaker.

Proprietor Bill Knutson says, “Wellknown as a Pinot Noir specialist and great guy, Grant is perfect for SpearHead. While we’ve had some success with our Pinot Noirs, we believe that with Grant on board we can aim higher and enhance our reputation as a producer of premium single-vineyard Pinot Noirs.”

To that goal, SpearHead’s winemaking operation will move into a newly constructed building, purposefully designed with input from Stanley, for

small-batch Pinot Noir production. The tasting room remains where it is while the downstairs will convert to a barrel room.

Watch for special barrel room tastings and wine-paired events. Of note, the winery’s name has changed from SpierHead to SpearHead Winery.

Spring wine releases highlight the 2017 White Pinot Noir ($24 pretax), a rare expression of a red grape using gentle winemaking techniques for pristine clarity and a rich palate with racy acidity and white peach and poached pear aromatics. Featured, too, are the 2017 Pinot Noir Rose ($21 pretax), 2017 Pinot Gris ($19 pretax) and 2017 Riesling ($20 pretax).

For The Wine Festival, Food Truck Friday returns May 4, 4:30-6:30 pm.

Enjoy a complimentary glass of select SpearHead wine on the vineyard patio, and purchase food from the onsite guest food truck. Pizzas return late June/early July. Additionally, Kelowna Shakespeare performs at SpearHead’s outdoor stage later in July.

Adding another world-class-level medal to its impressive list of accolades, Kalala Organic Estate Winery stepped to the podium again at the Chardonnay du Monde competition in France. The 2016 Chardonnay Icewine won second among 679 competitors from 39 wine-producing countries at the 2018 competition. Top gold medal was awarded to Liquidity Estate Winery of Okanagan Falls.

According to Kalala founder and owner Karnail Singh Sidhu, “Chardonnay du Monde is our Olympics and we’re proud of our second and of Liquidity’s first place.

Shining the light through being judged the world’s two top Chardonnays is good for the Okanagan and BC wine producers and Canada’s entire wine industry.”

Located on West Kelowna’s upper bench, Kalala, started by Sidhu and family, has made award-winning, reasonably priced wines since July 2006. The vineyards were deemed certified organic in September 2010. Kalala, which means “Miracle Place,” is a symbol of the com-

mitment to harmony with nature, organic viticulture and winemaking practices.

“Honestly,” admits Sidhu, “being recognized among the best winemakers in the world is not surprising. We’ve learned from each other the secrets to making good wine, which starts with growing good grapes. Then, rather than hurry, extend the aging and fermentation process to enhance the flavour and raise the alcohol level a little higher.”

He credits Okanagan wine industry consultant Alan Marks with encouraging Kalala’s ongoing pursuit of excellence.

Marks says watching Kalala’s medal count rise in a highly competitive field is not surprising. Sidhu also attributes the growing conditions of West Kelowna, which features good soil with good exposure to the sun.

While some grape varieties come and go, notes Sidhu, Chardonnay is never out of fashion. Kalala’s Chardonnay Icewine is renowned for its cool-climate flavours and aromas such as honeysuckle, lemon and apricot. For more information on the wines and Kalala Winery visit www.kalala.ca

Pinot Nero: Ciao Bella has been recognized as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir (French for pinot nero) and for good reason. The 2015 pinot nero is an ideal summer red, replete with a rich garden bouquet of strawberries, cherries and raspberries coupled on the palate with a mild, fruitful body and just a slight touch of chocolate. You’ll want to hurry because stock is low. It will soon be replaced by the 2016 vintage that showcases the seasonal variations with prominent notes of dark chocolate, black cherries and the pleasing aroma of fresh strawberries.

Rosé: Seasonal variations doesn’t mean every season’s wine will catch you by surprise. Consider Ciao Bella’s ever popular rosé. While precious little remains in the wineshop of the 2015 rosé, sommeliers and wine enthusiasts alike will find that both the 2015 and 2016 vintages showcase a refreshing body of strawberries and rhubarb with ever-so-subtle hints of watermelon lingering on the back of the palate.

Pinot Grigio: This classic, Italian-style white wine is off-dry, an ideal body for the cool evenings of late summer with crisp bursts of green apple and hints of apricot complemented by its citric nose and buttery finish. Unfortunately, the 2016 pinot grigio has already sold out! How similar will the 2017 vintage be? And what variations can you expect? You’ll have to take a quick trip to this little Italy to find out!`

A hub of activity at

Summerland Estate Winery + B&B DEANNA DUNHAM

We have finally said goodbye to the winter blues and hello to spring.

It’s a great time to check in at Summerland Estate Winery + B&B. Aside from the seasonal task of pruning and laying down canes, the winery is full of action as renovation plans come together. The brush has been removed to enhance the view of Okanagan Lake and areas are being sculpted to feature a picnic area by the wine shop and private event location for B&B guests.

In March, Summerland Estate welcomed Shannon Grimshaw to the team to manage the onsite, threebedroom B&B as well as two vacation rentals; a deluxe four-bedroom with three and a half bathrooms, full kitchen, two living areas and two en suite Jacuzzi’s, and a two-bedroom suite featuring another full kitchen, dining, living room and bathroom.

Between preparing a total of nine bedrooms for upcoming guests, Shannon is also using her experience and skillset as the previous owner of a painting company to help with renovations at the winery.

“I was initially hired to freshen up some of the painting inside the B&B, and I kept thinking, I want to be a part of this! I love the Okanagan and I’m really looking forward to sharing my passion for the valley, BC wines and locally grown food with our guests,” Shannon said as she worked on putting together her next guests’ breakfast menu.

While it is still a little chilly to be thinking about swimming in the lake just yet, the winding path through the vineyard down to the private lake access is clear to walk along. It takes about 15 minutes if you can resist stopping to admire all the amazing viewpoints along the way.

A Family Masterpiece

Following an international career in the oil and gas industry that assisted them in developing a palate for fine wines, proprietors Oleg and Svetlana Aristarkhov moved their family to the Naramata Bench from Alberta to establish Moraine Estate Winery.

Oleg notes when they first emigrated from Russia to Edmonton in 1995, he experienced his first Canadian wine and it tasted terrible. It took a vacation in the Okanagan many years later for him to see the potential of BC wines.

In 2010, he and Svetlana bought a sixacre home site and planted 3.5 acres in Pinot Noir, naming the vineyard “Sophia” after their youngest daughter. Then in 2012, they bought a winery and vineyard that had gone bankrupt. It was planted in eight acres of Merlot, pinot gris, Viognier, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Riesling. The winery’s name “Moraine” is a tribute to the glacial soils that — with the gentle slopes, sunshine and reflection from Lake Okanagan — comprise the terroir that contributes to fresh, elegant, fruit-driven wines of distinction. That vineyard was renamed “Anastasia” in honour of their oldest daughter.

“The family is one of nature’s masterpieces,” said George Santayana, SpanishAmerican philosopher, poet and humanist.

This tenet is embraced by the Aristarkhov family as they have created a masterwork winery, engaging the talented winemaker Jacq Kemp to assist them.

Moraine Estate is consistently in the highest rankings by online sites such as TripAdvisor for its stunning portfolio of award-winning wines at affordable prices; congenial and knowledgeable family and staff; and breathtaking views. As they move forward this year in building a stateof-the-art new facility, another pillar of their attention to detail will be enhanced.

Culmina Family Estate: Long ago (in terms of the BC wine industry) and in part because of his fluency in German and hobby winemaking, Crescent Hill Winery founder Glennallyn Murray became close friends with Tom Hoenisch, a winemaker at Andres Wines in Port Moody, BC. When Hoenisch moved to Penticton as a winemaker at former Casabello Wines in the late 1970s, Murray sold his real estate holdings to follow his mentor to the Okanagan. Murray purchased land in Penticton, creating one of the area’s first vineyards to pursue his winemaking hobby fulltime. Influenced by Hoenisch’s belief and later Elias Phiniotis' research that vinifera grapes would produce finer wines in the Okanagan, Murray brought back 100 per cent German cuttings in his suitcase from Europe.

By 1980, he purchased European equipment and made his first vintage.

A bit of a renegade, Murray was happy to sell his “juice” without a winery license to friends and neighbours, and to Casabello and Calona Wines. His family shared in vineyard and farm gate duties.

Says daughter Teresa Murray Wiseman, “As kids, we were taught to notice details like the shoes on people who came to the gate. Only bureaucrats and enforcement people would wear shiny black shoes to a vineyard. We’d sell our ‘juice’ to anyone but them.”

Back then, her dad was told by a Summerland Research Station staff that “pigs would fly before Gewürztraminer would grow in the Okanagan.” As it flourished, Teresa donned a flying pig pendant necklace, which she still wears.

Hidden in Plain Sight She took up the gauntlet to license the winery when, as her father was dying in 1999, he asked her to carry it forward.

With her family and husband, Russell Wiseman, she succeeded. Interestingly, when Wiseman took winemaking at Okanagan College, he shared classes with George, the son of Elias Phiniotis.

Imagine their delight when the Gewürztraminer named “Glennallyn” — to honour her father — was awarded Double Gold and Best White Wine in Canada at the All Canadian Wine Championships, plus Double Gold at Sip Northwest. Accolades continue for Crescent Hill Gewürztraminer and others such as Curvy Gurl Chardonnay 2014 and The Olde Orchard Pearl of Csaba Muscat, made from Hungarian orange Muscat — one of the world’s oldest grape classes.

Fulfilling her father’s dying wish was challenging as a woman. She persevered to take the farm gate operation that was hidden in plain sight to what Crescent Hill Winery is today. Last year, the small tasting room was launched. In those early days, her father operated a small bus to bring visitors to his property and then later added Lang Vineyards to his tour.

Now, wine tours delight in making the trek overlooking Skaha Lake to visit Crescent Hill. The family cycle continues too, as her own children get increasingly involved in the vineyards and winery.

Clos du Soleil Winery:

A Complex and Dynamic Encounter LESLEY BUXTON

Clos du Soleil is a winery with a difference. Instead of a tasting room experience, where the focus might be more on sales, the winery offers an immersive, multifaceted experience, wherein guests are encouraged to explore, not just the tasting room, but the estate itself.

There are no restricted areas in a biodynamic winery; guests can walk through the vines or visit the barrel room to ask questions. It’s about slowing down and lingering on a view or a sip of wine. To encourage this, there’s a new licensed picnic area where guests can enjoy one of the winery’s delicious locally produced picnic lunches with a glass of wine. And this all takes place under the shade of a big umbrella, while the kids can investigate the grounds.

To further entice guests, the winery is hosting a series of new events this season. Most are open to the public, although some are limited to wine club members.

Recently, it held a Spring Celebration open house, featuring a selection of back vintages from its library.

At the tasting room, guests will find new releases and small batch wines not available anywhere else. Here, guests are invited to enjoy the complete collection of wines — sometimes even including back vintages and wines known to be especially age-worthy.

For those just eager to relax, why not experience the view from The Pecking Room Patio Grill? On a sunny day, there’s no place like it.

Chef Darin Paterson, chef of the well-known Penticton restaurant Bogners, specializes in creating dishes that pair beautifully with Red Rooster’s wine. Fancy a tasting?

Relax and have it at your table. Try some wines from the exclusive Rare Bird Series. These limited editions can only be found at the winery.

A fabulous choice is the Rare Bird Pinot Gris 2016. Grown in Hidden Terrace, just north of Oliver, and fermented in the winery’s new 630-litre concrete egg for several weeks, this wine is a fantastic addition to the portfolio.

This is a wine with a big-mouth feel. It’s fuller and rounder with a spectacular nose and great aromatic qualities — there’s honey, apple and apricot with a mid-palate splash of grapefruit. It’s pale and light and well-priced at $24.99. Try it with seafood, summer salads, rotisserie chicken and even that most Canadian of meals, poutine.

Another must-try from the series is the Rare Bird Viognier 2016.

Viogniers are traditionally known for either being fruity or floral. This one favours a fruit-forward flavour with a stone fruit accent of peach.

Burke describes it as a white that wants to be a big red.

He says, “It’s big across the board with big texture, big flavour and a big finish.”

A wonderful lemon yellow colour, it’s thick and dry, but at the same time imbued with fruits such as

peach and melon. It has a snappy finish of lime. This wine loves spice, so pair it with Chicken Korma or Vindaloo, or a Thai Green Curry.

You won’t regret it.

Another must-try wine is the limited-edition Reserve Syrah.

Offering a wonderful representation of the terroir of the Okanagan, this is a wine with a rich lineage.

Its predecessor won the 2015 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence. On the first sip of the Syrah, there’s a hit of floral, but this quickly gives way to hints of coffee, cocoa, sweet tobacco and blackberry. The finish is long, lingering and peppery. It goes well with rich foods, barbecue and even lasagna. It has many, many layers.

“It’s made to drink slowly,” says Burke.

It’s a cerebral wine to be enjoyed with your favourite album, best friend or lover. It’s the kind of wine that cannot be rushed. A reminder to all of us to slow down and enjoy the finer things in life, such as great wineries like Red Rooster.

Nighthawk Vineyards is off the beaten track of regular touring itineraries. Folks are drawn here, having enjoyed the wine at an event, or as repeat visitors, or because someone recommended it. But once here, via the scenic six-kilometre route from Okanagan Falls, the peaceful setting entices you to linger. Take your time — the Nighthawk team encourages it.

Owners of Nighthawk Vineyards, Daniel and Christy Bibby, know firsthand how magical the moments can be at a winery. Their love of the Okanagan Valley grew as they toured wineries with guests. Then there was a pivotal stay at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery when they woke up to vineyard vistas and started to envision that lifestyle for their own family. With a few twists and turns, they found their property, just past See Ya Later Ranch Winery, perched above vineyards and Green Lake.

The quaint tasting room is the first building you see as you turn into the driveway. Inside, the charm continues at the tasting bar with Nighthawk’s wellcrafted array of wines. The wine labels and tasting room walls are adorned with the art of Alex Fong of Kelowna, a close family friend. Art themes are rooted in nature, which is fitting since the winery itself is named for nighthawks that nest in the area.

You’ll find selections of preserves and vinegars — a hint of the family’s culinary credentials. Aficionados drive from Kelowna just to snap up the Pinot

Daniel and Christy have built a longstanding reputation in the hospitality industry. In fact, it’s a family thing: all four of the Bibbys’ children are involved in the wine and culinary industry in some way. It’s a good thing because along with the romance of living the farmgate winery life, comes a lot of hard work. Recent wet conditions that caused flooding throughout the Okanagan also hit the Nighthawk property. Rather than dwell on the loss, the Bibbys have mopped up and investigated solutions moving forward.

Daniel remarks, “We are so thankful for the support of others in this industry.

Through them, we’ve learned so much.”

The wines are crafted in small lots with winemaker Matt Dumayne. During my visit, I tasted Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Rose, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, and Nighthawk’s first Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc.

With only 330 cases made, each bottle is individually numbered, like an original print. Crafted with 54 per cent Cabernet Franc, 32 per cent Merlot, eight per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, four per cent Petit Verdot and two per cent Malbec, it’s an expression of the historic vineyard planted in 1968.

The wine is richly scented with aromas of cedar, blackberry and sagebrush, leading to a full palate of dark berries and cassis, with a round, long finish.

Though delicious now, the Garland will cellar well for five to 10 years.

The Garland will make its debut on May 12 at the estate’s annual crush pad party held for its’ Bench Club members. Club members will also be introduced to another new release, this spring’s 2017 Terra Unica Sémillon.

Terra Unica — meaning unique earth in Italian — is a series of small batch wines crafted specifically for the club.

Each spring the estate introduces a white, each fall a red. These limited production wines are crafted in small lots, taking advantage of select varietals typically not produced by

Hester Creek. Club members can also look forward to a 2017 Terra Unica, Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah blend this October.

This season’s Sémillon has aromas of citrus rind, lemongrass, honey, tarragon and clover. It’s crisp on the palate with hints of Honey Crisp apple and a lengthy, full-mouth finish. Its vibrant acidity lends itself to pairing with sushi. Access to the Terra Unica series is just one of the multitude of advantages of becoming a Bench Club member. For anyone wanting to try Tinhorn Creek’s Oldfield Reserve Rosé, visiting the winery is a must.

Nelson says the rosé sells out fast — about the end of July — and almost all of it sells directly from the winery.

The winery will also be releasing a couple of limited wines only for the wine club members.

“We started an Innovation Series and essentially it’s a sandbox to experiment with different styles,” he says.

Tinhorn was founded with a focus on growing the best grapes, making great wine and having fun.

That love of fun shines through in Tinhorn’s many popular events.

Besides the music, this summer will also be filled with a number of other events at the winery,

especially for those who love fine dining and an active lifestyle.

The Golden Mile Bench Vineyard Tour takes place August 17. The vineyard walk with Tinhorn Creek viticulturist Andrew Moon includes wine tastings, as participants learn about vineyard practices, sustainability and the new Golden Mile Bench sub-appellation. The walk is followed by an alfresco reception with wines and canapes

by Miradoro Restaurant. Tickets are $49 per person and must be purchased in advance, as space is limited.

The winery will also host Yoga in the Vineyard on Saturday mornings throughout June, July and August at 9 am. The one-hour yoga class in the winery’s amphitheatre is good for all skill levels. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 for dropins.

There are a number of events happening specifically at the Miradoro Restaurant, which is perched on Tinhorn’s picturesque vineyards and offers stunning views of the South Okanagan Valley wine country. The restaurant serves Mediterranean-influenced cuisine by executive chef Jeff Van Geest.

The ever popular Starlit Supper returns July 13. Watch the moon rise over the mountains while dining under the stars. Summer evenings were made for this kind of event. A multi-course dinner prepared by Miradoro is paired with Tinhorn Creek wines and served in the amphitheatre. Royal Astronomical Society telescopes are available for stargazing on the night. Tickets are $125.

Miradoro features weekly themed communal table dinners, every Tuesday night in April and May and October to December.

Dinners feature fare that is local, rustic, simple, straightforward and seasonal. The meal is $35 per person.

A new way to taste wine at Black Hills Estate Winery

If one could live at a winery, Black Hills Estate Winery might be at the top of the list. The tasting room here is in the middle of the vineyards and there’s a pool in which to dip your toes. Nestled between Osoyoos and Oliver, in the middle of Canada’s only official desert, Black Hills offers a spectacular setting for wine-tasting.

The estate is also optimally positioned for producing mouthwatering grapes. Located on the Black Sage Bench, overlooking the Okanagan Valley, Black Hills sees more sunlight hours throughout the months of June through August, than the world-renowned Napa Valley.

This year, Black Hills is taking the wine-tasting experience to a whole new level by incorporating all of the senses, especially the sense of smell.

Their brand new sensory experience will focus on aroma compounds often found in wine. By isolating 32 aromas, guests will able to identify 32

impressions that can be left on one’s palate.

Groups will have the opportunity to smell various scents in tandem with their wine tasting, in order to draw out what they’re uniquely noticing.

While some may pick out hints of maraschino cherry, some might smell a cigar box.

“Wine is such an individual experience,” says Fawcett. “I think having the opportunity to expand the horizon and try to identify taste and nose profiles will allow the visitor to get a different perspective on wine and a better understanding of the tasting experience.”

Fulfills its Destiny DAVID WYLIE

The Dhaliwal family has a long history of growing award-winning grapes in the Okanagan. They immigrated to Canada in the 1990s on a journey that turned out to be their destiny.

“My dad literally had five bucks in his pocket — and those five bucks he had to borrow,” says Neelam Dhaliwal, operations manager at Kismet Estate Winery in Oliver.

She says her dad, Sukwinder Dhaliwal, worked in agricultural jobs. His brother, Balwinder Dhaliwal, eventually joined him in British Columbia, and together the two gained insights into managing vineyards.

At the same time they planted for some of the region’s best-known wineries, the brothers began purchasing property together on the side. Eventually, they couldn’t maintain the balance of growing their own grapes and working full time.

They pivoted into managing their own vineyards and consulting for the industry.

The Dhaliwals grow many varieties on 350 acres, including rare grapes, like Grenache and Mourvedre. About 90 per cent of their grapes go to other wineries in the valley, and 10 per cent are used for Kismet wines — enough for about 6,000 cases.

Wines featuring the family’s grapes have consistently been used to create award-winning vintages.

“That’s when we started thinking, something’s missing. We want to be at the front end,” said Neelam.

In 2009, the family produced its first wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon blend. They gave it to friends and family, who

loved it. In 2013, they opened their winery and called it Kismet — a Sanskrit word for destiny.

Kismet named its top red blends after the spiritual laws of destiny: Karma, Mantra and Moksha, and each tells a story of the Dhaliwals’ journey.

The winery is one of a few in the South Okanagan with a guest house. It’s designed with delicate Indian décor, and includes a hot tub, fire pit and picnic area.

Kismet’s bistro features the family’s secret recipes for authentic Indian cuisine. The response has been outstanding.

Since opening, they’ve expand the bistro to accommodate more guests and special events. They also have a beautiful space in the centre of the vineyard that can be reserved for private events.

The wine, food and beautiful venue make a perfect recipe for spectacular events.

“People are blown away at how well the wines pair with Indian food,” says Neelam.

This year, the winery is putting out three new releases: • Sparkling white: the winery will be putting out 200 cases of the dry sparkling wine, reminiscent of a citrusy cider; • Lotus rosé: a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and orange Muscat; like lotus blossoms blooming from muddy water.

• Malbec reserve: aged in expensive barrels, it has a very intense and powerful flavour, with a bit of mint, and reminiscent of Argentinian wines Last year, Kismet launched a wine club membership, which includes access to exclusive releases, and they’ve been overwhelmed by demand.

As the last of the season’s snow has disappeared beneath the radiant glow of the Okanagan sun, a little patch of garden sanctuary has once again emerged. Hidden Chapel Winery sits nestled in the hills just off Highway 97 as it curves its way into Oliver, south of Okanagan Falls.

Here, the roar of the highway is scarcely heard, and is instead replaced with the tranquil melodies of songbirds.

Hidden Chapel Winery is the very definition of a hidden gem. The winery boasts an impressive and diverse array of both sophisticated whites and well-aged reds. But they’re best known for their wedding trilogy, a series of specially crafted wines: White Wedding (a Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Riesling blend), Blushing Bride Rosé (Cabernet, Malbec) and Shotgun Wedding (an award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon).

Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery’s 2017 Gewürztraminer-Schönburger is a wine with an award-winning lineage. Its previous manifestation, the 2016 Gewürztraminer-Schönburger, won a slew of awards including a Platinum at the 2017 Pacific Northwest Annual Invitational Wine Competition, a Best of Class Gold at the Indy International Wine Competition and a Double Gold at the Cascadia Wine Awards.

With a fifty-fifty combination of Gewürztraminer and German Schönburger, a grape whose heritage includes Muscat, Pink Chasselas and Pinot Noir, this is a wine with presence. It’s also a little unusual. After all, not many white wines include a red grape in their parentage. The Muscat gives the aromatics of this wine a tropical fruit flavour that’s intense but not overwhelming, while the Gewürztraminer adds a nice acidity. It’s well balanced, and wonderful as an aperitif or with Asian food.

Another fabulous aromatic wine is the winery’s 2017 Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is reminiscent of a New Zealand-style Sauvignon Blanc. It’s subtly scented, gentle and refreshing. Softly fragrant with a lively palate. There are notes of melon and small berry. This is a wine that pairs beautifully with summer salads or light seafood. Sip it on the patio with a good book.

The 2017 Rosé Merlot-Cabernet Franc was recently released to a very

favourable reception. This wine highlights two varietals — Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Pink with a touch of orange, the rosé has a round, lingering-mouth feel and plenty of flavour. There are traces of strawberry, rose petal, red currant and Granny Smith apple.

Made to be enjoyed young, try it with light pastas, fish and pork tenderloin, or on its own paired with a great view.

When visiting Desert Hills Estate Winery, you may see one of the Toor brothers pouring wine in the tasting room or riding a tractor in the vineyard. The three brothers — Randy, Jessie and Dave — take the term “family-owned and operated” to another level.

The 24-acre home property is located just outside of Oliver, BC, on the Black Sage Bench, with upwards of 100 acres of vineyards in the south Okanagan. The Toor brothers have established Desert Hills Estate Winery as a must-try winery in the Okanagan. They were the first to plant Syrah in the Okanagan, and the first in Canada to do a five varietal Bordeaux blend with their first vintage of Mirage in 2000.

With over 500 wine awards to their name over the past 18 years, the Toor brothers have every reason to hold their heads high.

Nonetheless, you won’t find an ego anywhere on the property.

The two family dogs — an English Bullmastiff named Ali and, new to the winery,

Laila, a German Shepard — help set the estate’s laid-back tone.

“We’re a very friendly, very welcoming winery,” says marketing manager Trish Hahn.

“We’re constantly told how our guests feel right at home and familiar as soon as they walk in.”

Perhaps the most exciting addition to the Desert Hills Estate this year is the new bistro, opening this spring.

Overlooking the southwest side of the valley, the East Indian influenced bistro will be led by Patrick Khatri, a young chef from Toronto.

“Patrick’s creative nature really fits with our team,” says Hahn. “We’re excited to have him onboard.”

The bistro will have a compact, fixed menu, so the team can be creative and experiment with daily features. Each dish focusses on fresh, local produce, and will be paired with a Desert Hills wine.

The bistro is set to open by June 1.

Before Gina Harfman was professionally making wine, she was airbrushing and pinstriping motorcycles, vehicles and basically any object thrown at her. Her family held onto almost everything, from old fridges to vintage cars — Harfman grew up in an era well before her time.

“I have a big family, so there were always lots of old stories to be told,” says the young owner of Oliver Twist Estate Winery. “Getting together and telling stories makes people feel good, and everybody has a story.”

For the single mom, winemaking came naturally as it is part of her Portuguese heritage. Her grandparents made wine in their basement.

Harfman’s family has lived in the Osoyoos area for four generations, buying bare land and farming it for over a century.

When Harfman purchased Oliver Twist Estate Winery in 2012, she kept the signature Oliver Twist wines but created her own Nostalgia series. The labels are brightly coloured, and each has a pin-up girl, with an attitude to match the wine. With names like Rockabilly Red, Pink Cadillac, Boogie Woogie White and Cherry Baby Port, the blends are fun and vivacious, just like their maker.

“People come here to have fun. We have speakers all around and crank up the music — usually ‘50s and ‘60s inspired,” says Harfman.

“We have a big yard, so families come, and kids can run around while the parents drink wine and have a picnic.”

The biggest event of the year is the annual car show where Harfman will release another Nostalgia series wine. This year’s event on July 14 is the fifth annual show.

You won’t find traditional prizes for the longest drive or best car, rather trophies are awarded for the best chic magnet and best rockabilly car. Plus, with food trucks and vendors, a pin-up girl contest and live rockabilly band, The Wheelgrinders, the event is a highlight of the year for Oliver Twist and for Oliver.

New Releases People around the world celebrate the Malbec grape varietal, and Malbec World Day this year fell on April 17. In support of this auspicious occasion, River Stone released the much-anticipated 2017 Malbec Rosé and the 2016 single varietal, single vineyard Malbec.

River Stone has grown the red Bordeaux grape varietals since 2003 and been making both single varietal wines and two Bordeaux-style red blends (Corner Stone & Stones Throw) since 2009.

The word Malbec generates interest merely by the mention of its name. A rosé wine made from Malbec is still a rare find in North America, and can be found more commonly in France, Argentina and Chile. River Stone’s Malbec Rosé has a rich, deep pink colour, a bold aromatic nose suggestive of raspberry and strawberry, and a medium body with a long savoury finish. The wine has a touch of sweetness, giving an inviting juicy dryness upon sampling. Only 350 cases are produced annually.

River Stone’s single varietal, single vineyard Malbec has also become wildly popular. Inky dark purple and richly textured with bold dark fruit flavours, it has a hint of spice and earth. Only 90 cases were produced, so best to get in quick as it sells out fast.

River Stone owners Ted and Lorraine Kane moved to Oliver in 2002 after purchasing 10 acres of land in 2001.

Ted says Oliver is like the centre of the Canadian grape growing universe.

Looking for white wines? River Stone also produces some notable whites. Their 2016 Sauvignon Blanc was awarded Best of Class in the 2018 Savor North West Wine Awards.

Adega on 45th Estate Winery’s Cabernet Franc is known for its amazing flavour and great grip. “It’s the best in the valley” says Karen Valckx, the estate’s wine shop assistant.

A big wine with 17.2 per cent alcohol, it’s boozy, but not heated. It flows nicely into jammy notes. The aromas are wonderful. Think raspberry, plum and cherry with soft oak, vanilla and pepper tones. The tannins are smooth with a hint of spice, caramel and toffee to round out the finish. It pairs beautifully with steak.

Another favourite is the 2013 Quarteto Tinto, which means “four reds” in Portuguese. It won a Silver at the prestigious Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in 2016. This Bordeaux blend is a full-bodied red. Its silky tannins consist of dark berries with hints of cigar, black pepper, spice and vanilla with nuances of plum and prune. This sumptuous wine has a long-lingering fruit and oak flavour on the palate.

Contrasting with these reds is the estate’s Riesling. This off-dry Riesling, with its aromas of green and McIntosh apples and grapefruit, has a wide appeal.

Even those who usually don’t like wine often enjoy it. Well-balanced and approachable, it’s medium bodied, with a crisp, clean finish that has a slight sweetness and lasting flavours of pear and floral spice.

Whether you’re a devoted port connoisseur or just learning about it, you can’t leave the Adega’s tasting room without trying the Portao. Karen gave me a piece of chocolate to take with my second sip which enhanced its flavours of vanilla, chocolate and tobacco. The Portao is a Merlot blended with distilled spirits. It is softer than most with a big fruity finish. Asked what this pairs best with, Karen recommends, “PJs and bed, dessert — on ice cream — and chocolate.”

Established in Kelowna’s Lakeshore district for more than 25 years, Summerhill is Canada’s largest, certified organic winery and BC’s first Demeter certified biodynamic vineyard. It is Canada’s foremost producer of sparkling wine. The accolades and many prestigious awards for its wines have proven that doing the right thing for the planet by going organic — as founder and proprietor Stephen Cipes maintained from the beginning — enhances flavour.

These principles are embraced by its acclaimed Sunset Organic Bistro, a 200-seat restaurant with a panoramic view of Okanagan Lake, which serves food grown and raised by local, organic producers, including vegetables from Summerhill's own permaculture-style garden.

Biodynamicist and permaculturist Gabe Cipes oversees the organic garden crew and sources and prepares the biodynamics applied to Summerhill Vineyard. As well as successfully leading the transition to Demeter Certified biodynamic status, he continues to diversify the farm with food forests and edible landscaping. With his team, he conducts experiments based on permaculture principles to increase biodiversity inside the vineyard system. Companion plantings are done with the grapes between the vineyard rows and in some cases with rows of herbs under the vines.

marginal spaces. Bees are treated as royalty and chickens dart about freely.

Gabe and his core team, including Jade Shaman, Barbora Varnaite and Isabelle Perrier, take their roles as stewards of the land seriously.

Experiments extend to the greenhouse, hot house, cold frame enclosures, vertical space, no-till raised beds, passive solar greenhouse, bees, berries, vegetables, the food forest and even the growing of grains in the vineyard alleyways.

“We are,” says Gabe, “doing phenomenological research with the use of the astrological calendar and aging our wines, seeds and biodynamic preparations in the pyramid, which is a sacred geometrical chamber. We are seeing how the microcosm and macrocosm are all interconnected and how everything effects everything else in the quantum field. We collect quantifiable data in the vineyards, conduct scientific research and experimental development for the company for tax credits.”

Jade Shaman adds, “The fact that these people and this company, Summerhill, recognizes that farmland is a valuable resource and invest in it as well as in the young, organic farmers is commendable.”

The culinary garden, now in its 12th season of production, provides the kitchen with various heirloom vegetables, herbs and berries. The garden team is excited, too, by the new culinary crew at Summerhill, led by Executive Chef Jeremy Luypen in the Sunset Bistro, as well as Chef Mara Jernigan, a Cipes family friend, who was formerly of Fairburn Farm in the Cowichan Valley. An avid Slow Food supporter, Mara will offer Culinary Weekend Packages and accommodations in the lake-view

home located in the middle of Summerhill’s 80-acre parcel.

Says Gabe, “As kindred spirits, we can work together with the natural food world and, given Chef Luypen’s organizational skills and love of gardening himself, we can have good communication and influence.”

Part of that influence includes kitchen composting that ensures chickens don’t eat what they shouldn’t. Nothing is wasted, including the crush and considerable water used in the winery production. The garden is managed with hand tools, no-till farming methods and biodynamic preparations to organically enhance the biological activity within the soil.

Twenty acres of the Summerhill property is under restrictive covenant with The Land Conservancy of BC to protect wildlife habitat for future generations, adding to the biodiversity of the farm, and providing a source for wildcrafting.

As a visitor to Summerhill, you’re welcome to explore the pathways including the gardens — just don’t tramp on the beds.
