Music TO YOUR EARS AT TINHORN CREEK

DAVID WYLIE

Great wine and a live concert are the perfect pairing. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards knows this first-hand. The Oliver winery is well known for its popular summer Canadian Concert Series. Performances are under the stars in a spectacular outdoor amphitheater. It’s a oneof-a-kind venue and Tinhorn Creek handpicks some of the best new Canadian talent every year. Tickets to the shows range from $35-$45. The 2019 Lineup May 25 — The Matinée: This Vancouver band got its start writing songs in a rustic cabin on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Since then, The Matinée has evolved to a roots and rock band with a following across North America. June 22 — Coco Jafro: Describing themselves as a “revelation for a revolution,” Coco Jafro is a fusion of Afro-Funk-Latin-Soul unlocking the desire to move with abandon. They create a unique tapestry of sounds that captures the pulse, energy and vibrancy of innovative world music. July 27 — Kasador: Kingston-based, alt-rock outfit Kasador spent their first three years on the road, earning a reputation for high-energy live performances. Duelling vocals and dynamic guitars are backed by rock and funk bass. Their latest album is produced in part by Rob Baker and Gord Sinclair of The Tragically Hip. August 24 — The Julian Taylor Band: The Julian Taylor Band (JTB) is the best Toronto band you’ve never heard. A box of memorabilia from his mom’s attic led Julian Taylor to self-reflection that resulted in the band’s most personal record to date, Avalanche.

The 40-year-old guitarist, of mixed Mohawk and African-Canadian heritage, has had a rich life both off and on stage throughout his career so far. September 14 — The winery always ends with a bang, and its 2019 headliner will be Bedouin Soundclash. The well-known Canadian reggae-rock band is back from a lengthy hiatus, releasing a new album October 4 called Mass. Don’t miss seeing them live. Tickets are $75. Shuttles to and from shows will be available from Penticton and Osoyoos for each concert; they are $20, return trip and include a glass of wine at the concert. Kick off your shoes and dance at Tinhorn this summer. But if you can't make it out for one of the concerts, be sure to come by for a tour and taste or enjoy the happy hour every Friday afternoon from 4 pm to 6 pm, June through August. Season Pass The $140 Season Pass is available until mid-May and includes one ticket for each concert May 25, June 22, July 27 and August 24. It excludes the grand finale on Sept. 14. Student tickets are also available. The most updated music info can be found at tinhorn.com/Concerts. Dinner and a Show Make it dinner and a show by booking a concert-night patio dinner package at the Miradoro Restaurant. (Check with Tinhorn for details. Concert tickets need to be purchased separately.) With its panoramic views, clean lines and a comfortable atmosphere, Miradoro features locally sourced ingredients with a hint of Mediterranean on the palate.

The restaurant won the 2019 Open Table Diners Choice Award for best ambiance, scenic view, outdoor eating and notable wine list. There’s a new tapas menu available from 3 pm to 5 pm. The food and wine pairing is a memorable and mouthwatering experience. Tinhorn Creek wines are paired with dishes from Chef Jeff Van Geest and his team. There is a three-course lunch paired with seven varietal wines for $75. They also serve a five-course dinner paired with nine reserve wines, at $165. The costs include tax and tip. Reservations are required, with a minimum group of 10. Be sure to book at least 48 hours in advance.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: • Easter Brunch at Miradoro from 11 am to 3 pm, with a complimentary Easter egg hunt at Tinhorn Creek at 1:30 pm. • The Tinhorn Creek 25th Anniversary Dinner is June 1. • Father’s Day is June 17th. Tinhorn is a great way to treat Dad to dinner and wine after a round of golf at the nearby Fairview course.

RESTAURANT WITH A VIEW THE LOOKOUT RESTAURANT AT GRAY MONK IS A MODERN FARM-TO-TABLE BISTRO DAVID WYLIE

Gray Monk’s restaurant has a fresh look — and an even fresher menu. The unbeatable view of vineyards and Okanagan Lake remains front and centre, and its new name reflects that: The Lookout Restaurant at Gray Monk. “There are very few places where you can get this kind of experience,” said Paul LaGrange, the front of house manager. “Come and do a tasting and see where the grapes are grown. Sitting on a patio looking out at the vineyard where your wine is from, eating food that’s grown right here — and with this view, it’s pretty hard to beat.” Along with updating the look to a modern bistro, they’re changing the entrance experience to be more welcoming with lounge space. “The service will be unobtrusive. It’s that fine line between sophisticated and casual,” said LaGrange. “We want people to feel welcome and feel comfortable.” The menu is rooted in fresh local ingredients, said executive chef Maurice Desharnais. “I'm making it my personal commitment to source the menu as locally as possible,” he said. “I’ve met a lot of local farmers. I drive five minutes to work and I pass 10 farms.

MAY/JUNE 2019

I was from out east and everything from out east is from the Okanagan. Now that I’m in the Okanagan, I plan on buying everything as locally as I can.”

“Everything in the kitchen is either made with wine, made for wine, or I drank a lot of wine coming up with the recipe.” - Chef Maurice Desharnais All the seafood is from the West Coast and sustainable. Desharnais sources small farmers for the meat he uses. “The menu will be smaller but changing frequently,” he said. “Seasonality will be a huge factor. Whatever vegetable comes up next, that’s what I’ll be putting out next. The weather tells me what I can use and then I pair off them, so that’s why the menu will be changing based on whatever I can get my hands on.” Desharnais worked for more than a decade at Peller Estates Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. When he was offered a position in the Okanagan, he took it. He said he’s excited about

the duck confit, which will be based off deconstructed wine profiles, served with a black pepper and pretzel spaetzli. “Everything in the kitchen is either made with wine, made for wine …. or I drank a lot of wine coming up with the recipe,” he said. Desharnais said he wants people to learn about the wine flavours and properties as they experience them through food; for example, the crispness and acidity of a Riesling. The wine flavours will shine through caramels, sauces and vinaigrettes. Gray Monk is an iconic Okanagan property. Established in 1972 by George and Trudy Heiss, it was recently purchased by Andrew Peller Limited. The estate is comprised of 75 acres of lush vineyards overlooking Okanagan Lake. It has produced some of the world's finest wines. “There has been a great reputation for Gray Monk in the past. They’ve been around for a long time and the wine speaks for itself; the estate speaks for itself,” said Desharnais. “We’re just going to add to that.” LaGrange has a personal connection to the winery.

“In the mid-80s I drove out from Alberta,” he said. “This is the first winery I ever visited and the first place I bought wine from in my life.” During the warmer months, Gray Monk draws visitors from all over the world. Lake Country is continuing to increase as a destination within a destination — the Okanagan Valley. The Lookout is also a draw for locals. “This is a place where people can meet somebody for a glass of wine and a charcuterie board at the end of a work day, or they can come here for their anniversary dinner,” said LaGrange. Some wine will be added here from the Peller holdings. Wayne Gretzky selections will also be available soon. Good to Know • The restaurant opens May 1 • On weekdays, lunch starts at 11 am, with dinner from 4:30 to 8 pm • Weekend brunch starts Saturday and Sunday at 10 am • Small plates are served every day from 3 to 5 pm For more information, visit graymonk.com.

Deeply rooted in the heart of the Okanagan Valley for over 45 years, Gray Monk was one of the original five wineries that pioneered the BC wine industry. Today, our 25 acre Estate Winery in Lake Country is open for tastings year-round, facility tours are offered June through September, and unique experiences will be a highlight during the Summer. At our restaurant, enjoy seasonal farm-to-table creations perfectly paired with Gray Monk’s cool climate red and aromatic white wines. @graymonk | graymonk.com 1-800-663- 4205 | 1055 Camp Road, Lake Country, BC WWW.WINETRAILS.CA

THE WHOLE TRUTH BY RAUDZ ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

As the line creeps higher on thermometers and spring unfolds her joyous features, who doesn’t want to head to a wonderful patio for a frontrow seat? The restaurants of RauDZ Creative Concepts have always had a focus on fresh, local and comfortable, and that approach is extended to patios apropos to each location. Fresh air is a natural mood lifter and multiple studies indicate time outside reduces stress, eases muscle tension and lowers heart rate and blood pressure. Dining outdoors helps us relax and our spirits are boosted by sounds, scents and soft breezes. Drink Local Speaking of spirits, and timely for patio fever, RauDZ Creative Concepts has launched its own craft gin, The Whole Truth, in collaboration with award-winning distillery Okanagan Spirits. Like RauDZ eat local philosophy, here you drink local with the botanicals found in this custom gin. At each RauDZ property, a special cocktail features The Whole Truth gin. At RauDZ Regional Table, it’s a revamp of The Truth, a classic gin and tonic cocktail popular since the opening in Spring 2009. The Whole Truth cocktail highlights the namesake craft gin with cucumber carpaccio, lime, mint and Fentimans Tonic. While there’s no patio included, you’ll find spring freshness in your glass.

micro bar • bites and Sunny’s Modern Diner The patios at micro bar • bites and Sunny’s Modern Diner sport a decidedly urban flair and are optimum for people watching. Can you Handle the Truth, at micro, stars the craft gin with a twist on the Mint Julep served in a copper mug with fresh mint. It’s a worthy addition to the new cocktail list recently launched at micro, where the cocktail menu is always creatively simple. Although most famous for Eggs Benny and incredible breakfasts, Sunny’s has a few cocktails up the sleeve such as the Big Dog Caesar, the Peach Melba Mimosa and Bloody Dill Mary. Sunny’s new gin cocktail is a spin on the Bellini — a nice breakfast bubbly. It pairs well with the sparkle of Okanagan Lake that you can peek at from the patio. Terrafina at Hester Creek by RauDZ This Tuscan-style restaurant in Oliver offers a stunning setting for its patio on the Golden Mile Bench, overlooking vineyards, fruit trees and the mountains beyond. You’d be hard pressed to find a prettier patio even in Italy. Better known for its wine list, including the Italian selection, there’s also a cocktail list. Sometimes our palates need a break from all that wine tasting and a cocktail is what we’re craving. A white Negroni called A Convenient Truth made with The Whole Truth gin and an ice cube of cucumber juice infused with mint and lime zest is the perfect crave satisfying patio sipper. It’s been said there are two seasons, winter and patio. Outdoor dining and sipping does the body good and that’s The Whole Truth. See you soon.

NEW WINEMAKER AT SUMMERHILL PYRAMID WINERY ROSE THROUGH THE RANKS ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Allowing things to grow organically in the Okanagan is as natural as the conditions are great for making awardwinning wine. Conditions are also great here for developing winemakers. CEO of Summerhill Pyramid Winery, Ezra Cipes, is pleased to introduced Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s newest winemaker, Michael Alexander, who rose up through the ranks. Calgary born and raised, Alexander credits his father for convincing him to take a WSET (Wine and Spirit Trust) course to help his career when he studied accounting at university (an unfinished venture). “I was instantly hooked. When my folks bought a place in Kelowna in 2009, I couldn’t pass up a chance to spend a summer living and working in the Okanagan. I applied at Summerhill and was offered a summer tasting room job. Like so many, I came for a summer and never really left. Four summers and a few majors later I knew wine was meant for me.” Alexander attended Niagara College Winery and Viticulture Technician program at Niagara on the Lake. Upon finishing university, Summerhill’s winemaker Eric Von Krosigk hired him. “That first day in the cellar, I knew I had found my life’s calling.” Progressing from cellar hand to assistant winemaker, managing the day-to-day of the cellar, Alexander was described by co-workers as “dedicated, inspiring, more than just a boss — he’s a leader, incredibly kind, optimistic and driven.” Asked what he liked most about his job, he responded with mutual admiration: “Summerhill has always had really cool people, who quickly become family. I love spending time with them at and outside of work.” Alexander now gets his turn to mentor others in winemaking. “Someone took the time out of a busy life to teach me. Now I get to pay it forward and teach the next group of aspiring winemakers.” Summerhill winemaker Von Krosigk remains a part of the Summerhill family, and can now focus on consulting rather than the daily routine of winemaking. Integral to Summerhill since the Kelowna vineyard was purchased in 1986 by the Cipes family, organic winemaking practices align with Alexander’s winemaking philosophy and perspective on the most interesting trends in the wine world.

12

A

MAY/JUNE 2019

Alexander explained, “Call it whatever name you want — natural wines, sustainable wines, terroir wines — there’s a movement of making wines true to their terroir. Consumers and producers seem to be on the same page. It’s time we go back to making wines that reflect the vintage and the vineyard. More wineries are celebrating single vineyards and vintage variation. Each year, the weather is different. Our wines should reflect the excitement of those variations.” Despite confiding that paper work is the least favourite part of his job, Alexander said, “the extra effort and a lot more paper work that’s required to produce organic wine” is worth it. Organic wine production means working with a certifying body to guarantee consumers that what is in the bottle is organic. “What matters to me is to put something exciting into a glass without using synthetic chemicals.” He said biodynamic winemaking is the ultimate score card. Winemakers have a huge box of tools to use on creating wines. Producing wine biodynamically limits those tools. However, limiting the toolbox allows wines to truly represent where they are grown and fermented. Spontaneous ferments rely on ambient microorganisms to get things going. Some are quick while others are slow and stressful. “It forces us to take a deeper look at our vineyards and soil, which results in healthier vines and fruit, and in turn, wines that better reflect where they came from.” Given the Okanagan Valley’s length, multiple lakes and dozens of soil types, there are many different grape varietals that grow well here. That’s something few places in the world can boast. Alexander’s top three are Chardonnay, Merlot and Riesling. He loves working with Chardonnay. “We grow amazing Chard in the Okanagan that lends well to many different styles. Known as a winemaker’s grape, everything we do to it — barrel aging, malolactic fermentation, yeast selection, etcetera — makes a huge difference in the final product. A great Chardonnay shows the winemaker’s skill. It’s fun to see the results of lots of small decisions. Plus,” he added, “I love drinking Chardonnay.” His favourite pairing is sparkling and popcorn. And after a long, hot, hard day, “nothing goes down like a gin and tonic, or two.”

LEARN HOW TO BE A SOMMELIER, OR AT LEAST A CONNOISSEUR, AT SANDHILL WINERY

MAY/JUNE 2019

BLAKE ALLEN

The world of wine can be intimidating with all the different varietals, styles and a vocabulary that borders on being its own foreign language! Fortunately, there’s a warm and welcoming place right in the heart of downtown Kelowna that can put you on the path to becoming your own sommelier: Sandhill Winery – British Columbia’s first urban winery! Tucked away on Richter Street, just a short stroll from the beach, this

historic winery offers guests a chance to enjoy a relaxed tasting at one of its several tasting bars and tasting experiences. Take a virtual tour of Sandhill’s different vineyards dotted across the valley, or just relax with a glass of wine and good friends in the spacious indoor lounge. You can even swing by Friday evenings in May and June for the ever-popular Sandhill Happy Hour, featuring live music and catered food in a mature, relaxed atmosphere. Once you’re feeling confident with your newly honed wine knowledge, you can take the ultimate test and step up to the bar for a personalized blind tasting. If by the end you’re not quite a sommelier yet, don’t fret, you can still hold your head up high knowing you’ve at least become a wine connoisseur. After all, what’s a connoisseur if nothing more than someone who enjoys fine wine and has a few opinions! Enjoy the 2018 Rosé The 2018 Rosé’s elegant pink body is a befitting colour for this classic summer wine. An aroma reminiscent of the season greets you with hints of wild strawberries, fresh peaches and ripe melons. This is followed on the palate with a pleasantly off-dry citric note of grapefruit, accompanied by subtle flavours of pomegranate and berries. Its distinctive Provence bottle reflects its Provencial-style — a perfect take on this most classic of Okanagan summer wines.

Make the Time to Taste BC’s Flavours This issue is loaded with great things to do, places to go and things to see. The wine industry has morphed so many times over the years, it is hard to imagine a time when things weren’t as much fun as they are now. Once upon a time, not so long ago, wine touring in BC consisted of going in, having a sip or two, maybe a tour, and then, off you go. My how things have changed. Today, BC wineries offer up world-class restaurants, picnic lunches, outdoor areas where you can bring your own snacks, and of course, great entertainment. In addition to giving advice on what to pair with your newly discovered wine, wineries offer you foods, prepared on site, that pair well with their wines. As an added bonus, there’s entertainment. Some wineries even pair the entertainment to wine. BC wineries offer everything from open air amphitheatres with amazing musical guests, to intimate and casual music serenading you on a deck overlooking a vineyard, lake, or rolling landscape. Unfortunately, there is a problem with this. That being, you need to extend your stay in our wine areas in order to truly appreciate all they have to offer. All kidding aside, this is not a bad thing. What once may have been a one or two day trip doing tastings, is now a week long sojourn into the flavours of BC. Make sure you promise yourself to come back again and again until you’ve experienced them all. Add to that the uptake in fruit wines, craft breweries, distilleries, cideries and meaderies, and you’ve got one full tasting vacation. Those who live here know that our restaurants rank right up there when compared to elsewhere in the world. Producers connect with topnotch restaurants and work with the chefs to ensure the perfect pairings with their liquid refreshments. And then . . . there’s chocolate. Many wineries offer chocolate cups to taste their dessert and ice wines. Then there’s the chocolatiers who infuse their chocolates with these lovely libations. We love our chocolate and wine so much, we even have events celebrating the pairing. There’s yoga paired with bubbly and chocolate and painting paired with vino and chocolate. Check online or with Visitor Centres to find out what great fun you can have while tasting your way through BC.

THE TERRACE RESTAURANT AT MISSION HILL FAMILY ESTATE: A VIEW TO A NEW CUISINE. LESLEY BUXTON

Terrace’s Chef Patrick Gayler’s respect for the distinctive beauty of the Okanagan, its rich agricultural heritage and the cycle of its seasons is evident in his creations. Drawing inspiration from Mission Hill’s extensive wine portfolio and the fresh produce grown in a garden only moments away, the Terrace’s menu truly reflects Patrick’s motto: “Embrace what grows around you.” Visitors won’t find anything served at the Terrace that local shoppers won’t find at their favourite farmers’ markets. Over the years, Patrick has established a close network of Okanagan farmers who share his interest in quality and flavour, ensuring the very best produce is served. This is food grown in the same terroir that gives Mission Hill’s wines their distinctive flavour — talk about a perfect pairing. Homemade Food The estate garden is a busy place. There are the beehives, the organic herb garden and the orchard that grows Asian pears, plums, apples, peaches, quince and even mulberries. These fruits are used to make jams and relishes — like Patrick’s great-grandmother’s piccalilli-style relish, a Terrace favourite. The kitchen at Terrace is a feast for the senses. Imagine scents of Italian

peppers, chillies, ground black pepper. There are sausages fermenting, meats curing, and jars of pickles and canned plums. Almost everything served is made from scratch. Last autumn, Patrick bought 20 pigs and started making home-made charcuterie style capicola and prosciutto.

“Embrace what grows around you.” The Terrace is open from May to September. This doesn’t mean Patrick gets to rest. Keeping a seasonal kitchen takes organization. One has to look to the future constantly, much like people did in the past. It ensures a kitchen that leaves minimal waste. Seasonal food is a fantastic way to help the environment. A Great Dining Experience Restaurant aficionados have long understood that a great dining experience is not just about the meal. While delicious food might be at the centre of it, atmosphere and service are essential components for a memorable meal. Housed in a Romanesque-style pergola, the open-air restaurant has the feel of a vine-covered Tuscan terrace. In

the afternoon, the sun filters through the high, slatted roof, casting soft shadows everywhere, and at night, diners can enjoy a meal under the stars.

Noir and Chardonnay vines are the magnificent panoramic views of Lake Okanagan. They are so spectacular, they don’t seem real.

Although Terrace is part of a grand estate, the ambience here is one of comfort. Diners are surrounded by both artistic and natural beauty. There’s the stunning architecture of Tom Kundig and sculptures by world-class artists such as Henry Moore. Overlooking rows of Pinot

There’s no need to feel shy here. The staff is warm and engaging and their emphasis is on building connections and making people feel relaxed. Something that is not hard to do in these surroundings.

REFRESHING ROSÉ RELEASED AT KALALA IN TIME FOR SPRING ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

As the sun returns to her full glory in the spring, we find ourselves migrating back to the patio and cracking open a fine rosÊ to celebrate the season. Just in time, Kalala Organic Estate Winery has released its new Kalala RosÊ 2018, available in its tasting room, Save On Foods and select private liquor stores. For availability near you, see kalala.ca. Kalala RosÊ 2018 pairs exquisitely with food, and is perfect for sipping on the patio. Think seafood like salmon, shellfish and tuna; roasted or barbecued chicken; spring salads; or a light snack platter adorned with fruit, soft and hard cheeses and crackers. It displays a beautiful pale pink colour in your glass. It has a deliciously fruity nose, and on your palate, you’ll notice strawberry, watermelon, candy and citrus. A blend of Gewßrztraminer, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Merlot, it unites the varietals' finest qualities. Given its lower alcohol content, light sweetness and bright acidity to balance, Kalala RosÊ 2018 is a great go-to summer sipper.

minimal handling during winemaking, the vineyards officially received organic certification in September 2010. For those looking for a bolder red wine, the Aspire 2014 is a complex blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with aromas and flavours of plum, blueberry and cherry. Enjoy it now by decanting before serving with heartier foods or consider aging it three to five years.

SUMMER SIPPERS AT VOLCANIC HILLS ESTATE WINERY SUE HARPER

Brush off the patio furniture and fire up the barbecue. Summer is on the doorstep. At Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, the release of many new aromatic white and rosĂŠ wines marks the return of long, sunny days, picnic lunches and special times with friends and family. A Perfect Pairing Reasonably priced and food friendly, rosĂŠ pairs with almost anything summer has to offer. According to marketing manager Kathryn Zondag, “Depending on the level of acidity in your rosĂŠ, wines made from grapes like Pinot Noir and Gamay are perfect with summer salads with fresh fruit and lively vinaigrettes.â€? The Volcanic Hills 2017 RosĂŠ is just that combination. Thinking of a summer sausage sizzle? Try adding rosĂŠ to your wine options. “A rosĂŠ that features subtle-spiced notes can be an ideal and refreshing alternative to a fullbodied red,â€? says Zondag. Â

The season is the optimum time to tour the Westside Wine Trail and head up to West Kelowna’s Upper Bench to visit Kalala at 3361 Glencoe Road. It has been producing award-winning and reasonably priced wines since July 2008, when the winery was established by Karnail Singh Sidhu and family. On May 5, starting at 9:30 am, Volcanic Hills is offering a yoga class followed by a threecourse, wine-paired brunch prepared specially by Blu Safron Bistro’s chef, Colin Rayner. Join Volcanic Hills’ partner Oranj Fitness for yoga on the patio with its spectacular view of the lake. From absolute novice to experienced yogini, students will work at their own level with instructors, offering alternatives for less advanced participants. Starting with some flow yoga, the class will move into gentle stretching and a luxurious shivasana (cool down). All you need is a mat, some water and comfortable clothes that allow for easy movement. Purchase tickets on the winery website (volcanichillswinery.com). Step into the Volcanic Hills wine shop and get ready to appreciate wines that taste as pretty as Okanagan summer sunsets.

ESCAPE THE DAILY GRIND WITH A PICNIC IN THE NEOPOLITAN GARDENS OF CIAO BELLA WINERY BLAKE ALLEN

You don’t have to board a plane to visit Europe; sometimes you can stumble into little pieces of it hidden right here at home. If you escape the traffic along Highway 97 and take a pleasant drive along the quaint little farms of Glencoe Road, you’ll find yourself at an authentic patch of Italy tucked into a vineyard in West Kelowna. At Ciao Bella Winery, owners Roberto and Sharon Fiume, along with children Antonio and Olivia, quite literally welcome guests into their home with a warm and welcoming ciao! The family’s Italian roots, like the vines surrounding the winery, run deep and their passion for wine and for the Italian way of life is felt in every little detail here — be it in the intimate and unpretentious tasting room, the fresh cappuccinos and soft aromas of Italian food in the air, or the occasional sound of vineyard workers calling out to each other in Italian. But for that truly authentic Italian experience, grab a bottle of wine and a plate of Spuntini (charcuterie the Italian way!) and relax in the rustic garden nestled within the vineyard, nicely tucked away from the rest of the world. Take your time in the pleasant silence of the area while you soak in the warmth of the spring sun. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d really found your way to Napoli, relaxing to the

gentle chorus of songbirds, getting to know the family, or maybe just catching up with some old friends. Either way, you’ll leave here knowing what it means to be part of the famiglia!

Wines, Wines, Wines! 2018 Pinot Grigio: Done, like all Ciao Bella wines, in a classic Italian-style, this off-dry white greets the palate with a gentle hint of pear followed by a prominent note of green apple and a calming citric nose that lingers pleasantly. It’s easy to see with this vintage why this grape is BC’s favourite white wine. 2016 Rosé: Seemingly made for picnics at the beach, few wines so elegantly summarize life in the Okanagan as this rosé. A fruitful nose, fresh from the garden, with prominent notes of watermelon, grapefruit and an ever so subtle hint of raspberries, lingers on the back of the palate. All wrapped up in its vivacious pink body. 2016 Pinot Nero: This mediumbodied red won two gold medals at both of Canada’s premier National Wine Awards. An aroma of dark cherries follows from the nose onto the palate where it’s paired with notes of dark chocolate. This is not the first time Ciao Bella has been recognized as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir, and this vintage is a fine illustration of why.

“DIRTY POUR” AT CRESCENT HILL ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

At Crescent Hill Winery, it’s almost as much fun to read the labels as it is to drink the wine. Crescent Hill doesn’t shy away from fun in winemaking, and in the quirky tasting room, staff love to share stories. The bottles, too, hint at history. Tales are woven into the artwork by talented artist Janis Blyth. All those boxes are ticked for spring in the crisp, dry rosé called Consensual Chaos. The 2017 Zweigelt Blend “has an exotic spice and floral character, predominant aromas of cinnamon and violets, making it distinctive and unusual. Hints of cherry, mineral and spice with new age oak help it pair beautifully with a wide range of foods.” Jennifer Case, Crescent Hill’s first winery agent, wanted to be on a label. In good fun, she’s depicted as a sassy young woman lightly handcuffed to the wine with winery dog Rico as her companion. The heart of the joke, says Teresa Murray, Crescent Hill owner, is history. “In Austria, they love their full-bodied reds year-round but in summer those hearty reds can be too heavy. So, they‘d take their best white and mix it with an exquisite red. Voila, that red they love in a mix suitable to chill, perfect for picnics, hiking and any summer outdoor activity.”

JUST WHAT IS DIRTY POUR? “Dirty pour” relates to a less scientific and more subjective mixing. “It’s ironic,” notes Murray, “because we’ve blended Zweigelt with Gewürztraminer — an Austrian and a German grape. Historically, those nationalities would never mix.” The bottle has tongue-in-check instructions with European precision: Step 1: Open bottle of wine to breathe. Step 2: If the wine is not breathing immediately give mouth to mouth. Warning: This wine will tease you with every drop. Upon consumption people get better looking and chaos will ensue! Murray noted, “In Canada, winemakers do scientific blends, not normally dirty pours. Our idea of Consensual Chaos, putting two quite different wines together, proves if you’re having an identity crisis, opposites do attract. It’s proven true in this surprising rosé!” Given its complex flavour notes, the food pairings are also diverse. Think spring lamb, roast chicken, pork, spicy cuisine and seafood such as prawns, salmon and tuna. Pair it with a variety of mild and mature, soft and hard cheeses as well as desserts. Or have it with a strawberry/spinach/goat cheese salad any time of year. Or savour it on its own. See crescenthillwinery.com for a complete list of the wines and their awards. To taste the wines and get a personalized story, catch up with the Crescent Hill team at various wine tasting events. Or visit the winery, which is now on its spring/summer hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm, and Sunday, 11 am to 8 pm.

PORTUGUESE TAPAS WITH MEXICAN FLARE: THE KITCHEN AT DA SILVA VINEYARDS AND WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

THE KITCHEN at Da Silva Vineyards by Abul Adame opened in Naramata in 2012 with the intention of providing a more social and interactive way of eating. A wide range of diverse dishes served tapas-style and inspired by the Naramata Bench winery was crafted as a fusion of Da Silva’s Portuguese and Adame’s Mexican heritage. Setting it apart from pretentious fine dining is a friendly atmosphere operated with family values and honest, simple preparation. Try the “Chef’s Choice” to best experience THE KITCHEN with course after course of vegetarian, seafood and meat-centric tapas presented with a few surprises along the way. The menu is 98 per cent gluten free: rather than a response to food sensitivities or trends, it’s how Adame himself eats.

TASTING SPRING AT CLOS DU SOLEIL

savouring paella for two as well as a glass each of Da Silva spring release wine ($48 plus tax and gratuity). New is "Happy 2 Hours,” 3:30 to 5:30 pm daily. Chill on the patio with vino and order finger food, Portuguese conservas (preserves) or daily-made $2 pintxos (smaller snacks served with a toothpick). Adame recommends, “If I’m still in, ask for hand-carved Serrano ham. I sometimes need a siesta, but you can take a meat-and-cheese tray to go.” If you’ve had enough wine for the day, stop by for a thirst-quenching lowalcohol beverage, suggests Adame. “It’s one of Naramata’s best spots to watch the sunset. There’s a front row table with your name on it.”

Now Taste This! For 2019, Adame created more than 20 new dishes. To name a few: clams in vermouth-saffron broth; grilled broccoli with roasted peanuts and DaSilva vinaigrette; boquerones (anchovies) in chili oil; and fast-cured mackerel.

SUE HARPER

Spring at Clos du Soleil is a time for celebration. The tasting room, picnic area and vineyard are open seven days a week from 10 am until 5 pm. Visitors can look forward to new releases and small lot favourites, many of which are offered exclusively in the tasting room. New to the Winery New to the winery this year is a rosé produced from 100 per cent Malbec grapes grown in the winery’s own vineyard on the Upper Bench of the Similkameen Valley. The floral aromatics combined with cranberry and citrus flavours set the crisp, dry and delicate wine apart from other rosés. Mike Clark, winemaker and managing director says, “The complexity, combined with the taut-but-delicate structure, make this a wine that pairs easily with food, and tastes beautiful by itself.” Another first for the winery, the recently released small lot Pinot Gris is part of Clos du Soleil’s Winemaker Series. The grapes are grown in their vineyard on the south side of the Similkameen Valley, “a cooler site, wonderful for slow ripening of grapes for white wine.” Visitors will pick up aromas of nectarine skin, fresh pear and lemon zest, and on the palate, nectarine, pear and apple. Clark notes that the wine is “a truly distinct expression of Pinot Gris, with excellent expression of the vineyard terroir.” Reacquaint Yourself with Old Friends Small stocks of wines such as the Cabernet Franc from the winery’s estate vineyard will be available only in the tasting room for as long as they last. From time to time, guests will also find exclusive Library releases of older wines.

Paella (the best in town) remains a staple and is always available. During Spring Wine Festival, May 2-12, and until May 31, reserve “Best Paella in the Okanagan” at thekitchendasilvavineyards.com or 1-800-8510903. Soak up stunning views while

RED ROOSTER WINERY: WHERE WINE LOVERS BECOME FAMILY LESLEY BUXTON

Red Rooster Winery is getting ready to prune the vines with its Adopt a Row members. This unique program allows wine aficionados the chance to buy a row at the estate and learn from the ground up what it takes to grow the grapes used to create the winery’s Rare Bird Malbec. Members can join the estate in pruning in the spring, tucking in the summer and picking in the autumn. For their work, they are rewarded with three membersonly gatherings. These gatherings feature delicious food and wine, and are attended by the winery’s award-winning senior winemaker, Karen Gillis, and winemaker Riley Hollenbach — both incredible sources of information. It’s a fabulous opportunity to hang out with the experts.

The Gift that Makes a Difference Join the Red Rooster team and become more involved in supporting local charities. This season, the winery is making a commitment to support Okanagan mental health charities, starting with the 8th Annual Walk to Defeat Depression on May 25. They’d love for you to join them. It’s a great way to meet the winery’s team, while working for an important cause.

supporting services in the community for those living with or affected by mental health issues.

The walk takes place at 1 pm at Rotary Park. Registration is at noon. Profits earned from the event will go towards

Burke describes it as, “A big white. Think of it as the little engine that could.”

Rare Birds The exclusive Rare Bird Series can only be found at the winery. One of the must-try wines in this series is the Rare Bird Viognier 2016. Traditionally known for being either fruity or floral, this one favours a fruit-forward flavour with a stone fruit accent of peach.

It has a lovely lemon-yellow colour, is thick and dry, and imbued with fruits such as peach and melon. As it ages this wine mellows. “Think, White Jasmine,” added Katherine MacKenzie, the estate’s manager. This wine loves big flavours. Pair it with East Indian food, Thai, Jerk spices, bold stinky cheeses, even a tart peach crumble. The possibilities are endless and delicious.

Burke Ganton, Red Rooster’s VIP and key accounts representative, said, “It’s a nice way to hang out and connect with people who share the same interests. The atmosphere is very much like family.” Of course, the major incentive for most members is having first access to the limited production Malbec, as only 215 cases are produced each year. Described as “luscious,” it showcases flavours of red currant, blackberry and blueberry with a finish of black tea, currant and spice. Membership fees are reasonably priced at $325 plus tax. There are still a few spaces in Adopt a Row open. This is rare. There are members who have been with this program over a decade. The Benefits of Wine Club Membership This season, the winery was thrilled to extend its wine club membership across Canada. Wine lovers from the Maritimes to the Yukon had the opportunity to savour the Rare Bird series, Red Rooster’s limited edition vintages. Members are certainly a fortunate bunch. Not only do they have access to perks like the winery’s private tasting rooms, where they can bring friends for tastings and nibbles, they also get free shipping, discounts and 15 per cent off in the restaurant. It’s a marvellous deal. One of the other major perks is access to select vintages, such as winemaker Karen Gillis’ passion project, the winery’s new bubbles. This project is the culmination of two years work and will only be available to wine club and Adopt a Row members. The atmosphere around the project is like kids awaiting Christmas. The staff is excited and can’t wait for its release date to be announced. The Sensory Room At Red Rooster, they love to share their knowledge, so if you love to learn, come check out their Sensory Room Experience. They offer a guided interactive wine experience that incorporates all the senses. It’s a great way to expand your wine knowledge.

NIGHTHAWK VINEYARDS: AN EXTRAORDINARY DESTINATION LESLEY BUXTON

High above Okanagan Falls, overlooking the spectacular Green Valley, sits Nighthawk Vineyards: a small, award-winning boutique winery named after the bird that’s frequently spotted in the area hunting for insects at dusk. The unique microclimate of Okanagan Falls is as well-matched to these creatures, as it is to some of the finest grape growing conditions in this valley’s unique terroir. Nighthawk Vineyards is thriving as well. The family-run vineyard is quickly making a name for itself. Last year its 2016 Chardonnay won a prestigious wine competition in Norway and was stocked in 59 stores across the country. This marked Nighthawk’s first international sales. The 2016 Chardonnay is now sold-out. The New Releases The much-anticipated 2017 Chardonnay has just been released. It’s described as highlighting hints of golden delicious apple and butterscotch, with aromatic elegance and mineral complexity distinctive to the high-altitude vineyard. It underwent a full secondary fermentation in French Oak, creating a buttery texture on the mid-palate along with a crisp long finish. The 2016 Gewürztraminer is an exceptional wine, featuring grapefruit, pineapple, floral notes and spice; it’s smooth on the mid-palate with a crisp long finish. Try it with spicy Asian dishes, roast ham and grilled chicken. It also stands brilliantly on its own. Another longed-for release — the 2017 Pinot Noir Rosé — is a crisp, lively wine with hints of grapefruit rind and a kiss of French oak. It has delicate floral notes and minerality, creating a textured mouth-feel. Pair it with fresh BC oysters or crab, cured meats and sharp cheeses. It’s a fabulous summer patio wine — one everyone is sure to adore. The 2017 Cabernet Franc is a flirtatious wine with hints of ripe raspberries, black currants, dark chocolate, tobacco and vanilla bean. It has subtle, fragrant notes with a charming aromatic elegance, and a soft but structured mouth-feel. A perfect wine to pair with barbeque season. Food and Wine, the Perfect Pairing A new outdoor vineyard kitchen is in the works, with the planned opening set for the May long weekend. Formerly an executive chef, owner Daniel Bibby is thrilled at the prospect of being able to serve vineyard-inspired cuisine made from farm fresh Okanagan ingredients accentuated by the family estate wines. Visitors can expect to find a dynamic showcase of food, featuring great artisanal cheeses, homemade preserves, charcuterie and much more. The winery tasting room is now open seven days a week until the end of October. Stop by and learn why this small winery is a big favourite.

KISMET ESTATE WINERY: A DATE WITH DESTINY LESLEY BUXTON

Kismet is often defined as the spiritual force that navigates the dimensions of our lives. Lovers frequently use it to describe chance meetings; actors employ it to define their big break; entrepreneurs refer to it when recalling the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that made their careers. No matter how it’s defined, there’s no doubt kismet has played a central role in the lives of brothers Sukhi and Balwinder Dhaliwal. A New Country In 1991, Sukhi arrived at Vancouver airport from India with $5 (that he’d borrowed) in his pocket. Back then, as he headed to Oliver by bus to join his wife, he’d probably have laughed at the notion that one day he’d be recognized as one of the Okanagan’s premier grape growers. After all, everything was so new — the landscape, the customs, even the fruit. He began in the vineyards of the south Okanagan. Soon his brother, Balwinder, joined him in Canada. Together, they learned the best growing practices, and moved from labouring to managing some of the finest vineyards in the region. The brothers became sought-after vineyard consultants and entrepreneurfarmers, focussed on growing highquality grapes for the surrounding wineries. The wineries using their grapes repeatedly captured major awards. Then it was time to start a family winery: one built on passion and talent.

Sukhi focussed on the vineyards, while Balwinder focussed on the winery. A Dream Come True In 2013 Kismet Estate Winery was born. The estate still supplies grapes to other winemakers, reserving 10 per cent of its fruit to create wines like its award-winning Cabernet Franc Reserve 2016 and Syrah Reserve 2016, both platinum medal winners at this year’s British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards. The estate has won five Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards in total. It’s an impressive feat for such a

young winery. Reserve wines are kept exclusively for members of their two wine clubs: the Kismet Connection Club and the Kismet Devotion club. The names of Kismet’s wines — Karma, Moksha, Mantra — reflect the history of the family: both the triumphs and the trials, and an acknowledgement of the spiritual laws of destiny they have encountered on their journey as an immigrant family. For the Dhaliwal family, wine and food have always been intrinsically linked, so it is no surprise that Masala Bistro,

the winery’s restaurant, is getting rave reviews. The menu even includes some secret family recipes. Like everything here, it’s the ideal pairing of East meets West. Kismet is a fabulous venue for weddings. Just picture it: a beautiful vineyard complete with delicious food and wine. There’s even an on-site vacation rental — a heritage home featuring a hot tub, fire pit and private lake access. It’s a wonderful spot for couples who just want to crash after the big event and the perfect place to wake up as newlyweds.

BLACK HILLS ESTATE: LITERALLY A HOT SPOT DAVID WYLIE

Black Hills Estate Winery is a literal Canadian hot spot, so it makes perfect sense it would host some of the hottest summer events. Unique for its desert climate, the winery is in BC’s famed Black Sage Road area in the South Okanagan. Nota Bene Release Party The Nota Bene Release Party has a reputation as the winery’s can’t miss hedonic event of the year. It’s on Saturday, June 15, from 5 to 8 pm and marks the release of the 2017 vintage of Black Hill’s signature wine. It includes epicurean delights from top chefs and tasting stations, featuring a selection of Black Hills wines and memorable musical performances. The headliner this year is up-and-coming artist Antonio Larosa. The event sells out, so be sure to get tickets. Coolest Party of the Year Black Hills also hosts its coolest party of the year, a Miami-style event on Saturday, August 17, from 6 pm to 10 pm at the Black Hills Wine Experience Centre. Relax in a pool-side cabana, chill on the Wine Experience Centre patio or party in the vineyard. Let your ears and body enjoy a bit of bass with lounge vibes from a live DJ. The event is highlighted by an interactive and eclectic fashion show. Throw in a little bit of Shakespeare, with a Midsummer Night’s Dream theme, and you have a night to remember. Food is provided by some of the most popular food trucks in the Okanagan. Don’t miss out.

This grape can produce deep, delicious red wines if bottled on its own, and enhances blends by adding complexity. Winemaker Ross Wise and Chief Wine Evangelist Glenn Fawcett will lead a guided vertical tasting of the 2006 through 2017 vintages of Black Hill’s Carménère. Find out why the “lost grape” is so limited in production, yet always high in demand. (This event will sell out quickly with only 50 seats available!) When you visit, don’t miss the Vineyard Kitchen, which will feature a new menu this year. Exceptional Terroir Black Hills has some of the best grape-growing conditions in Canada. It’s located on Black Sage Road — exactly 13 kilometres north of Osoyoos and 10 kilometres south of Oliver, placing it in the Okanagan Valley appellation and centred in the middle of the country’s only official desert. That microclimate leaves it with one of hottest, driest and sunniest sites in the country. In fact, with its northern latitude, it has more sunlight hours than Napa Valley in the key growing months of June through August.

Vertical Tasting Are you interested in a little bit of wine history with a buzz? On Friday, June 14, from 2 to 4 pm, Black Hills showcases the history of the Carménère grape, originally planted in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France.

OL IV ER GEHRINGER BROTHERS ESTATE WINERY: TWO MORE DELICIOUS REASONS TO VISIT LESLEY BUXTON

As if there weren’t already enough reasons to recommend Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery, now there are two more. Introducing the awardwinning winery’s new releases: Tickled Pink 2018 and Sparkle 2018. Made using a CO2 infusion technique, like frizzante, these wines mark the first bubbles produced by Gehringer Brothers. Tickled Pink 2018 This blush-coloured 50/50 Merlot/ Cabernet Franc blend is fresh with soft light bubbles. An authentic summer sparkler, it’s enticing, with plenty of strawberry flavours along with red currant, pear and tangy sharp apple. It’s gorgeously balanced with a lengthy body and a graceful finish.

Gehringer calls, “A good food wine.” It’s remarkably versatile when it comes to pairing. Serve it with light summer foods — shrimp linguini, asparagus and Brie crostini, skewers of salmon and avocado. Experiment and see what works. Both wines are fabulous palate cleansers. A sip between mouthfuls allows diners to enjoy all the flavours of a meal and creates a sense of anticipation, the way ginger enhances great sushi.

AMBER RAE BOUCHARD

For those seeking out the Okanagan’s hidden gems — look no further. Hidden Chapel Winery is proud to announce its 10th anniversary in the business. This exciting news is accompanied by the 10th release of the everpopular White Wedding 2018, a sophisticated blend that begs to be paired with your next summer feast. Hidden Chapel is also pleased to present a fresh lineup of rosés, including the Blushing Bride 2018 and St. Nick 2018. The Blushing Bride is a berry-rich rosé with a touch of refreshing Riesling. It’s made for patios and summer sipping. Back by popular demand, St. Nick is an elegant off-dry rosé perfect for the holiday season. With notes of juicy plum and tart cranberry, this is a wine that pairs divinely with turkey feasts.

This wine loves food. Serve it with brunch on the patio, a picnic lunch by the lake, an aperitif, dinner with friends. Enjoy it on a slow Sunday afternoon paired with a favourite book. There’s no way you can go wrong with this wine. Sparkle 2018 What’s not to love about this wine? Lovely and lively with soft golden hues, this estate-grown white blend is refreshing and immensely drinkable. Think Okanagan peaches, citrus, pears, tart gooseberries and small ripe strawberries. A light bubble with a delicate, bright, crisp acidity. You’ll want to enjoy this wine year-round. Like Tickled Pink, Sparkle is what Walter

HIDDEN CHAPEL CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY

These wines are incredibly well-priced at $18.99, and destined to become an integral part of your summer wine selection. You’ll find them at fine liquor and grocery stores throughout the province.

Exquisite Estate-Aged Reds Fall head over heels with Shotgun Wedding 2013, the latest vintage of the first red wine produced by Hidden Chapel Winery in 2009. Exhibiting rich notes of dark cherry and berries with a touch of spice, this soundly structured Cabernet Sauvignon finds its match with

beef, lamb or an assortment of stronger cheeses. Shotgun Wedding represents the distinct marker of quality that Hidden Chapel strives for as one of the few wineries that bottle-age on site in a 900-square-foot underground concrete cellar. Think of Shotgun Wedding as your summer thunderstorm red: crack a bottle and savour the moment as rumbling clouds roll over the valley and lightning streaks across the darkened sky. Watch for upcoming anniversary celebrations set to take place this fall — dates to be announced. Now open seven days a week, Hidden Chapel is eager to welcome you to a storybook winery that truly makes an impression to last a lifetime.

Come celebrate this Father’s Day at Adega on 45th Estate Winery and learn why this family-run winery is everybody’s favourite. This annual event is a great way to kick-off the new season and a fabulous way to show Dad you care. Nothing says I love you more than a day filled with wine, food and music. This year’s catering will be provided by Adam Relvas of Relvas Catering. Originally from Osoyoos, Adam is now based in Kelowna. In 2017, Relvas Catering was nominated by Okanagan Life Magazine as one of the Top 3 caterers in Central Okanagan. Adam will be preparing appetizers using locally sourced ingredients to pair with Adega’s critically acclaimed wines. There will be music on the patio by popular Osoyoos singer Diane Ball, known for her fabulous one-woman show and her interpretations of rock, blues and jazz standards.

The idea behind the event is that wine lovers visit a variety of pairing stations where they’ll be able to discover new wines and food combinations in a low-key, relaxed atmosphere. After all, this is a day devoted to taking it easy and enjoying each other’s company. The event is open to all. Admission is free for wine club members and $5 for nonmembers. New Releases Watch out for the estate’s new spring releases. Wine sells out quickly here; in fact, the Riesling and Pinot Gris are both sold out. But Adega’s flagship white wine, Felicidade, is still available for now. This gorgeous blend of premium grapes is absolutely delicious. Imagine fresh citrus zest with floral and tropical notes and soft hints of herbs, pears and peaches with a clean, crisp finish, balanced with delicate residual apple notes. Perfect for enjoying on the patio. Don’t miss out, grab a bottle or two while it’s available.

COURTESY OF VOLCANIC HILLS Strawberry season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with a fantastic glass of rosé and a light summer dinner!

• 2 Tbsp plus 1/3 cup extravirgin olive oil • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (about 1 and 3/4 lb), tenders removed • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar

• 1 tsp grainy Dijon mustard • 2 tsp honey • 1 medium shallot, minced • 6 oz loosely packed baby spinach leaves (about 6 cups) • 8 oz strawberries, stemmed and quartered (about 1-1/2 cups) • 3 oz crumbled goat cheese (about 3/4 cup)

Instructions Heat 2 Tbsp of the oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat until shimmering hot. Pat the chicken dry and season with 2 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper. Cook, turning once, until just cooked through, about 10 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and let rest, loosely covered with foil, for 5 minutes. While the chicken cooks, toast the walnuts in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until evenly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. In a small bowl, whisk the remaining 1/3 cup olive oil with the vinegar, mustard, honey, shallot, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper. In a large bowl, combine the spinach, strawberries, goat cheese and walnuts, and toss with enough of the dressing to coat. Arrange the salad on a platter or plates. Slice the chicken and arrange on the salad. Drizzle with some of the remaining vinaigrette, if desired, and serve. Serve with a hunk of warm crusty bread and a glass of Volcanic Hills 2018 Rosé. 30

BORDERTOWN VINEYARDS AND ESTATE WINERY: A YOUNG WINERY WITH AN EXCEPTIONAL REPUTATION LESLEY BUXTON

Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery, one of the newest wineries in Osoyoos, is already making an impressive name for itself, with fans such as Canada's most prolific wine writer, John Schreiner; Vancouver-based wine consultant, Kurtis Kolt; famed wine writer Dr. Jamie Goode; and Natalie Maclean, wine expert and recipient of the James Beard MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing awards. Not bad for a winery that’s only six years old. The winery has a bevy of medals, including an array of Lieutenant Governors awards, National Wine Awards of Canada and Cascadia International Wine Competition awards. It was also listed as one of the WineAlign Top 10 BC wineries plus one of the Top 25 Wineries in Canada — achievements to which some established wineries still aspire. The Secret of Their Success It’s the quality of the fruit. For over 20 years, Bordertown owner Mohan Gill and his family have supplied some of the Okanagan’s best fruit to select wineries and winemakers. They’re well-known for their reliability, farming skills and incredible attention to detail. Their legendary consulting winemaker, Daniel Bontorin, is devoted to crafting wines that reflect their varietal character. Due to increasing popularity of their wines, the family is expanding production. This doesn’t mean a change in the quality of their products. Customers can still expect the very best. At Bordertown, they never sacrifice quantity over quality.

The Rock Star: Bordertown’s Cabernet Traditionally in the South Okanagan, the Cabernet Franc grape was used to create fine Bordeaux blends. Until lately, it was never considered a stand-alone grape. Meet Bordertown’s Cabernet Franc, the gamechanger. Recently, Ocean Wise Executive Chef Ned Bell wowed guests at NYC’s prestigious James Beard House by pairing it with BC salmon with mushrooms, celery root and hearts, and black truffle dressing. According to Pursuitist magazine, the avantgarde pairing by Chef Bell enhanced the black truffle in the salmon and made the dish shine. The wine features flavours of tobacco, dark spice, herbaceous green pepper and a tiny hint of mint. All of this is achieved while maintaining supple tannins and dark berry flavours. The finish is pleasant and lengthy. It’s a steal at only $24. A New Adventure This season, Bordertown is introducing a tall can artisanal apple cider called Hard Pressed. It was created to showcase the delicious apples grown in Bordertown’s sun-drenched Osoyoos orchards. Naturally gluten free, it’s pressed, fermented and packaged using only the juiciest, freshpressed apples. There are no additives, preservatives or added flavours. The cider is hand-crafted using a variety of heritage apples — the exact blend is a well-guarded secret. The result is a delicious, thirstquenching cider that’s refreshingly dry, with fleshy apple fruit. It’s lip-smacking good.

SPIRIT RIDGE RESORT: INSPIRED BY LEGENDS LESLEY BUXTON

Long ago, when the Okanagan people wintered in the place where Spirit Ridge Resort now stands, they gathered around campfires and told stories. These were known as Chaptiks and were passed down from generation to generation. Through Chaptiks, the young learned their people’s history and legends and how to care for the environment. One of these legends was The Four Food Chiefs. It featured: Chief Black Bear (sk m xist), chief of all creatures on the land; Chief Spring Salmon (n’titxw), chief for all creatures in the water; Chief Bitterroot (spi m), chief for all things underground; and Chief Saskatoon Berry (s1y a ), chief for all things growing on the land. A story of tolerance and kindness, it explains how The Four Food Chiefs sacrificed themselves in order to feed the People-To-Be. e

e

As a tribute to this legend and the generous spirit behind it, the resort’s restaurant has been reimagined and named The Bear, The Fish, The Root, and The Berry. Here, in this beautiful space, Daniel Bibby, the resort’s GM and executive director, hopes guests will create new stories. The Bear, The Fish, The Root, and The Berry Spirit Ridge’s new visionary executive chef Murray McDonald, the genius behind the reconceptualization, is well known for his passion for foraging

and indigenous cuisine. The gifted Newfoundlander joins the resort after working as the executive chef at Toronto’s prestigious Ritz-Carlton. Some may recognize his name from his work at the renowned Fogo Island Inn, where he was the founding executive chef. Under his guidance, the inn became a renowned luxury destination resort. In keeping with the philosophy of the Four Food Chiefs, the new menu is fuelled by the seasons, as well as McDonald’s appetite for foraging. Think modern vineyard with Indigenous roots. This is beyond farm-to-table. It’s about the abundance of the land, and creating cuisine with regional flavours like desert sage, sumac, juniper and rosehip. To integrate these ideals, there are plans for a garden with herbs and heirloom tomatoes.

In May, the resort will have its own beehives, cared for by an experienced beekeeper. Imagine how delicious this honey will be, imbued by the flavours of the desert. The honey will be used in countless recipes as well as in delicious, hand-crafted cocktails infused with local plants and herbs. Given the region’s prominent vineyards, there will be an extensive list of South Okanagan wines. The goal is to accompany that with a curated list of hand-crafted beers and a choice of artisanal spirits from BC breweries and distilleries. This restaurant establishes a new beginning for Spirit Ridge, one that signals the launch of its very own legend.

DISCOVER ARMSTRONG – THE HEART OF COUNTRY beautiful bunch of forested trail loops, summits and rock bluffs that overlook the valley.

The town of Armstrong in the Spallumcheen Valley offers a breath of fresh air. There is a lot to see and do in this beautiful agricultural community. Armstrong is known for its relaxed atmosphere, and the welcoming locals make visitors feel right at home.

The Thomas Hayes ecological reserve is a natural sight to see. It’s a wildlife sanctuary, so no dogs are allowed because of the sensitive ecosystem.

Come Explore Outdoors The Armstrong Visitor Centre is a perfect first stop. “People who appreciate wine also enjoy some of the other things we have here, like the cheese, food and art,” said Patti Noonan, Executive Director Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Centre.

The Visitor Centre can guide you to these destinations, as well as the Historic O’Keefe Ranch. Be sure to wander around town and to stop in at local businesses. If you have time for a hike, there are several ways to enjoy Spallumcheen. Explore Mount Rose-Swanson and its

The Valley First Music at the Park in Memorial Park is a perfect place to mingle. It runs for 10 weeks, starting in June and ending in August. “You’ll see people there who came in the afternoon to get a camping space, and they’re chatting away with all of the rest of the people who live here,” said Noonan. “It’s not like they’re outsiders.” Barn Quilt Trail Armstrong is a place where rural arts shine. The community has BC’s first Barn Quilt Trail. For the uninitiated, barn quilts are a form of “rural graffiti” — timehonoured patterns hand-painted on large sheets of plywood and displayed on barns and buildings. For over 100 years, warm and vibrant rural communities have offered myriad activities and attractions.

AMBER RAE BOUCHARD

Everyone is searching for the next go-to summer beverage in the dry Okanagan heat, and this year there is something new and decidedly avant-garde for wine lovers to discover. Whether you're a fruitforward patio whites kind of person or a tried-and-true red wine devotee, you can have it all with Wine2Go. Launched in 2018, these were the first of their kind available in Canada, and they come in convenient 355 ml aluminum cans. Your New Summer Go-To is Wine2Go Wine2Go has its appeal for all types of wine enthusiasts, even the most

traditional. Each sip offers a burst of juicy aromatics and clean, delicious complexities on the palate. I personally recommend the un-oaked red — well chilled, it's the perfect alternative to the abundance of rosés offered around the Okanagan. Watch for this new delight on local store shelves or ask your favourite wine shop to order it in. Recline Ridge is celebrating its 20th year this summer and is open seven days a week. “RARE GEMS” HIT THE MARKET ON THE FRASER VALLEY WINE TRAIL LESLEY BUXTON

The Fraser Valley is emerging as British Columbia’s newest wine region and partners Carolyn Glazier and Darci Steffins of Capulet Properties | Angell Hasman & Associates believe the time is now for savvy industry investors to establish a Fraser Valley operation. “The Fraser Valley could be the next Napa Valley of 50 years ago, the Okanagan of 20 years ago,” Darci says. “Our local Wine Tasting Trail is growing more and more each year. Timing is everything to secure your place on it.” This new wine region, which covers Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Delta, Langley and Aldergrove, is producing beautifully handcrafted wines. Carolyn and Darci know the region well. It’s where they’ve raised their families, lived, worked and entertained. It’s the community they’ve lovingly served for over 25 years. They understand the lifestyle, and this gives them an edge and an authority when it comes to matching investors with the right luxury estate. The biggest advantage this wine destination boasts is its proximity to the world-class city of Vancouver and the Pacific Rim markets. It’s only a 45-minute drive to downtown and even faster by helicopter — only 13-minutes. This dynamic duo are well-equipped to lead investors in this direction. With their concierge service, they oversee every aspect of their clients’ journeys, while setting up key alliances with many industry experts. Another option is the opportunity of a second holding in the Okanagan.

VILLA DI FONTI

A prime example of this is Langley’s Township 7 Winery, which now has a winery on the Naramata Bench. These sorts of ventures give winery owners the opportunity to expand market share and cultivate important alliances, along both the Okanagan and Langley Wine Tasting Trails. The benefit of close proximity to the affluent metropolitan market of Vancouver and the flexibility to blend grape varieties in each region makes business sense. Villa Di Fonti Envision living here. The Villa Di Fonti is an award-winning estate set on 72 pristine acres, designed as an expression of the owners’ love for Tuscany and its old-world charm. Each part of this creation was carefully planned to mimic Tuscany's splendour — the rolling landscapes, the dramatic architecture and the enduring and beautiful craftsmanship. The owners were even married onsite near the 10-acre vineyard. It’s listed at $25M. Imagine what a magnificent winery it would make. Amenities include: two lakes with white sand beaches, helipad, amphitheatre perfect for musical presentations, infinity pool, Koi-pond, putting green, 50-plus parking spaces, chef’s kitchen, caterer’s prep kitchen and alfresco dining. It’s located just minutes from

White Rock, Fort Langley Village, equestrian parks, golf, excellent schools and an airport. White House West This magnificent country estate has just been added to Capulet’s collection of fine properties, and it’s listed at $15.68M. It’s been used as a Hollywood movie location and owned by champions of industry. “White House West” is looking for its new “First Lady” and “Gentleman” with its stunning indoor pool, tennis court, riding arena and trails. A fantastic location for a showpiece vineyard operation with established wineries located nearby. Villa Bellavita Villa Bellavita is an architectural masterpiece cloistered in prestigious High Point Estates: a gated, two-acre 13,289-square-foot entertainment mecca for key wine buyers. Vaulted ceilings welcome guests through double doors into a cathedral entrance; a European-inspired portico leads into a private, courtyard.

VILLA BELLAVITA
