TINHORN CELEBRATES 25 YEARS DAVID WYLIE
Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is celebrating its Silver Anniversary. For 25 years the winery has focused on growing the best grapes, making great wine and having fun whenever possible. Kenn and Sandra Oldfield and Bob and Barb Shaunessy started Tinhorn in 1993 with a couple of barrels in a basement and a few acres of vines. Since then, he Oliver winery has become a thriving attraction for its wines, events and concerts. It was acquired by Andrew Peller Limited in 2017, incorporating Tinhorn’s ultra-premium wines and talented people into the Peller family. Come celebrate 25 years of great wine!
Events Take in the stars at the Starlit Supper Enjoy a multi-course dinner on July 19 in the barrel cellar by Miradoro, perfectly paired with Tinhorn Creek wines. After dinner, take full advantage of the summer night by stargazing in the amphitheatre with telescopes and astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society to guide you. The $125 ticket includes dinner, wine and gratuities. It starts at 8 pm. Speaking of Miradoro The restaurant won the 2019 Open Table Diners Choice Award for best ambiance, scenic view, outdoor eating and notable wine list. There’s a new tapas menu available from 3 to 5 pm. Happy hour is every Friday from 4 to 6 pm until August 30. Enjoy $7 wine by the glass with complimentary nibbles. Summer at Tinhorn is synonymous with the Canadian Concert Series This year, the one-of-a-kind venue has already hosted The Matinée and Coco Jafro. Still to come are Kasador (July 27), and The Julian Taylor Band (August 24). Tinhorn always ends with a bang, and its 2019 headliner on September 14 will be Bedouin Soundclash. The reggae and ska band based out of Toronto was formed in 2001 and has released four studio albums with the latest single making its debut in 2017. The duo’s newest song "Clock Work” was released in 2017 and shows a new direction influenced by the sounds of New Orleans. The catchy tune was recorded in the summer humidity at the mouth of the Mississippi. It bristles and fizzes with jangling Big Band swing-pop. It’s a hornheavy, jazz-inspired, toe-tapping track. Bedouin Soundclash’s new album, called +Mass, is due out this year. Don’t miss the chance to see them live. Tickets are $75. Shuttles to and from shows are available from Penticton and Osoyoos for each concert; they cost $20 for a return trip and include a glass of wine at the concert. If you can't make it out for one of the concerts, be sure to come by for a tour and tasting, or to enjoy happy hour every
Friday afternoon from 4 to 6 pm, June through August. If you want the VIP treatment, join Tinhorn’s Crush Club and enjoy a complimentary reception and advanced seating at Tinhorn Creek's concerts, free tastings at the tasting room, and even 10 per cent off the food bill when you dine at Miradoro. Love is in the air at Tinhorn The winery is also a picturesque and popular wedding location. There are several different wedding packages to reserve at Miradoro Restaurant and Tinhorn Creek as the perfect place to say, “I do.” Whether you want a small, intimate wedding or a grand event, winery staff will work with you to make sure the day is perfect. Email weddings@ tinhorn.com with booking inquiries. Tasting Tours Tinhorn has a variety of tasting tours. The guided winery tour runs daily and costs $20 per person to see the winery, vineyard and barrel cellar. It’s a glimpse into the winemaking process and takes about one hour. For wine lovers who really want to peek behind the scenes, every Friday and Saturday, Tinhorn runs Let's be Franc! This guided tasting tour explores Cabernet Franc. The cost is $40 per person and takes about 90 minutes. There’s room for two to six people. The Oldfield Reserve Tasting & Cellar Tour runs Friday through Sunday. It’s a rare opportunity to taste a barrel sample. The tour takes about 90 minutes and costs $40 per person. There is space for two to 12 people.

FROM TH E EDITOR TASTE THE BC DIFFERENCES That means these wines can now state on their labels that 95 per cent of the grapes in the bottle come from their specific area. For those who don’t know, Naramata Bench is on the east side of Okanagan Lake just outside of Penticton. Skaha Bench encompasses the area about 10 kilometres from the outskirts of Penticton and along the eastern shore of Skaha Lake. Both of these new subappellations have a terroir that is quite distinguishable, even to a novice wine drinker. DARCY NYBO
We’ve always known BC wines were delicious and unique. Many a local and visitor have become accustomed to certain flavours, aromas and mouth feels of wines from specific areas in the province. And while wine drinkers know that several of the Okanagan’s wine growing areas produce distinctive wines, now the government of British Columbia has recognized these subtle and not-sosubtle differences.
BC’s best local food and drink festival
Sunday, August 11, 2019 Caldwell Heritage Farm, Kelowna, BC Tickets online only www.feastoffields.com
There are nine appellations in BC including: Fraser Valley, Gulf Islands, Kootenays, Lillooet, Shuswap, Similkameen Valley, Thompson Valley, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan Valley. As of May 2019, there are officially four distinct sub-appellations in the Okanagan. Wineries located in the Naramata Bench and Skaha Bench join Okanagan Falls and the Golden Mile Bench as official sub-appellations.
As the Minister of Agriculture’s office said in a media release, “When wineries add area-specific labels to bottles, they help customers relate to the unique terroir in their specific area, while increasing exposure to wine and agri-tourism.” There are approximately 60 different grape varieties grown in BC. It’s estimated they win about 2,000 medals/awards per year at national and international competitions. That’s a lot of award-winning wine to sip and savour as you discover your next favourite vintage, or check out the latest releases of your go-to wines. Whether you visit the wineries directly, or purchase your wines from a specialty or liquor store, you’re sure to enjoy the diversity of flavours that accompany all our BC wines.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE FOR RAUDZ ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
Demand for the RauDZ Creative Concepts Ltd. family of restaurants heats up in the summer and a little local knowledge can go a long way. RauDZ Regional Table Take RauDZ Regional Table, where you can eat local like a local. As peak growing season transforms the Okanagan Valley, you may not have time to tour all the farms, orchards and farmers markets. Don’t worry about it because RauDZ long ago developed strong relationships with farmers, foragers, fishmongers, ranchers, winemakers, distillers, brewers and other producers. The menu at RauDZ brings the Okanagan’s bounty to you. Rich aromatics of dill, lavender, tomatoes, peas, cherries and peaches are simply samples of the fresh flavours you’ll savour in the chefs’ creations. It’s good to know that RauDZ takes reservations, and walk-ins are always welcome. In other significant news, RauDZ has a 100 per cent local wine list so there is always the option to try wines from wineries you may have missed in your touring, or to relive that wine you regretted not buying. With such a large valley filled with wineries and wine, it’s impossible to visit them all. Audrey Surrao and her team excel at sourcing wines from small-batch wineries, offering exceptional examples of BC varietals that pair perfectly with the hyper local food and cocktails.
micro.bar.bites Another insider’s tip from frequent diners is to make a festival of your RauDZ dining excursion. Why not sip some #creativelysimple cocktails at micro.bar. bites before heading to RauDZ for dinner? It’s hard to beat the tapas there if you’re feeling a bit peckish before the main event. If you’re a RauDZ walk-in with a delay for a table, enjoy a beverage at micro and be called when your table is ready. Sunny’s Modern Diner Locals know, too, that before heading out in the morning for wine touring, it’s smart to lay down the foundation of a good breakfast. Sunny’s Modern Diner is just the ticket. Reading the menu itself will have you smiling as you brush up on your diner lingo with dishes like Cluck and Grunt (eggs and bacon). Whole Truth In RauDZ restaurants, you’ll never be asked to “stay thirsty my friends,” because each one offers an array of beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Just this spring, RauDZ Creative Concepts launched its own craft gin, The Whole Truth, in collaboration with award-winning local distillery Okanagan Spirits. What’s a great spirit without a great line of cocktails to leverage it? At RauDZ, you’ll find The Truth, elevating the classic gin and tonic. At micro, Can you Handle the Truth, is a tweak on the mint julep. Then there’s Nothing but the Truth at Sunny’s, squeezing the best out of the Bellini. Finally, at the Italian-themed Terrafina restaurant at Hester Creek, you’ll find A Convenient Truth, an enriched version of the Negroni.

SUMMERHILL IS CANADA’S FIRST B CORPORATION CERTIFIED® WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
Family owned and operated, Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery has achieved another first. It is the first winery in Canada to gain B Corporation (B Corp™) Certification, and one of just 26 wineries worldwide. For wine lovers, it means the Cipes family and the Summerhill team go above and beyond delivering delicious organic wine and cuisine to being great corporate citizens. “Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability
to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.” Summerhill CEO Ezra Cipes explains, “My parents started working with Summerhill Pyramid’s organic certifier all the way back in 1988. Organic certification is important because it provides transparency for the way we farm and make our wine.” He continued, “Now I am thrilled to announce that Summerhill has been accredited as a Certified B Corporation,
which provides the same kind of transparency for the way we run our business. Our overall impact on our Earth and community is looked at; everything from the way we hire and treat our team members to every aspect of our supply chain. The B Corp certification is a mark that means we prioritize people and planet alongside profit and are using business as a force for good.” Vision Achieved Summerhill Pyramid Winery is Canada’s most visited winery. Thousands of visitors are welcomed onto the farm from all over the world. “The founding vision, to bottle the very finest wines in the world, has been achieved,” said Ezra. “And we have trophies from the highest levels of competition in France, England and around the world to show for it. The greatest legacy is the change we strive to nourish daily. Our greatest goal is ongoing: to be of service to humanity, engendering a culture of gratitude for people and planet with every heavenly sip of our organic wine.” Summerhill joins over 2,700 Certified B Corporations from more than 130 industries and 60 countries. The certification process uses credible, comprehensive, transparent and independent standards of social and environmental performance, assessed in five categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. You can find Summerhill’s impact report here: bcorporation.net/ directory/summerhillpyramid-winery. “In today’s (post) modern world,” said Ezra,
“business has a profoundly powerful effect on the structure and content of our daily lives. As entrepreneurs in a multifaceted industry that involves farming, manufacturing, marketing and hospitality, we see ourselves as having a responsibility to contribute to culture in a way that aligns with the eternal values that nurture health and happiness in humanity. This responsibility is our primary motivator, not profit alone.” The Declaration You’ll find Founder and Proprietor Stephen Cipes enthusiastically urging everyone in the Okanagan to join Summerhill and the Cipes family in signing The Declaration at organicokanagan.com to convert lawns and gardens to organic. Recently, on Summerhill’s News & Blog section, he advocated for insects and stressed their importance in our food chain. “Let’s all consider a radical “inner crusade” by consuming organic foods and beverages.” Wine Club Naturally, the Summerhill Wine Club rewards you as “a fellow steward of the planet.” With organic red, white or mixed-case options, exclusive club member benefits include: 15 per cent off wine purchased in the wine shop and online; 15 per cent off the bill when dining in the Summerhill Organic Bistro; free premium wine tastings for you and up to six guests; free wine tours for you and up to six guests; exclusive member events and first access to all Summerhill events; and first priority to library releases. Visit Year-round Since it's open year round, you can visit often to witness the changing seasons. Whether meditating in the pyramid or finding your serenity through the scenery and gardens, you’ll find sanctuary within the city. Explore the grounds on a self-guided tour, or with tours of the Pyramid, garden pathways, Kekuli, and riparian areas. Dine in the Summerhill Pyramid Bistro or at the new courtyard wine lounge, featuring street food from around the world, and sample Summerhill wines to taste the intrinsic quality of organic winemaking.

GAME ON FOR GAMAY AT VOLCANIC HILLS ESTATE WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
With only 172 acres of Gamay Noir planted in all of BC, it is no surprise Volcanic Hills Estate Winery’s Gamay sells out quickly every year. While much of BC’s Gamay is allocated to rosÊ production, Volcanic Hills gives this grape a chance to shine as a single varietal wine. As a terroir-expressive grape, Gamay can produce high-quality wines in BC with soft tannins, light body and intense red fruit flavours of raspberry, cranberry and red cherry, with earth, cinnamon and a hint of sage. Volcanic Hills Gamay is known for its soft and silky approachability and is made in a more structured style than many; it’s reminiscent of Beaujolais villages. Volcanic Hills is excited to announce its release of Gamay is just in time for barbecue weather! This light-bodied red is the perfect option for hot summer night sipping, especially lightly chilled. Volcanic Hills recommends pairing it with your favourite sweet barbecue sauce dishes, for example: BBQ Sauce for Ribs or Chicken Ingredients: 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 Tbsp onion salt 1-1/2 tsp celery seeds 1-1/2 tsp garlic powder 1-1/2 tsp chili powder 1 tsp finely ground black pepper 1 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp cayenne 2 cups tomato ketchup 1/4 cup white vinegar; more to taste 2 Tbsp prepared yellow mustard 1 tsp fresh lemon juice 1 tsp liquid smoke (optional) 4 Tbsp butter, cubed and chilled Directions: In a medium saucepan, combine all the ingredients except the butter. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Once the sugar is dissolved, reduce the heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. With a whisk, blend in the butter cubes, a couple at a time, until incorporated. Use atop your favourite grilled ribs and chicken dishes and pair with a glass of Gamay!
WES T KEL O W NA KALALA ORGANIC ESTATE WINERY IN WEST KELOWNA: PATIO TIME ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
During the Okanagan summers, we find ourselves migrating to the patio and opening a bottle of wine to celebrate the season. Kalala’s 150 Frizzante is the ideal pairing for hot Okanagan days. A perfect festive wine, it’s available in Kalala’s tasting room, Save On Foods and select private liquor stores. This zesty bubbly is fresh on the palate and pairs well with chicken or fish tacos and cold salads. It also makes the quintessential mimosa! It’s extremely versatile and ideal for raising glasses for a toast. It’s the perfect go-to summer sipper.
FRESH FARE FROM BUY THE SEA DAVID WYLIE
Buy The Sea seafood market has been providing seafood lovers in the South Okanagan with fresh seafood for more than 25 years from its locations in Penticton and West Kelowna. “Our many years of connections in the seafood industry allow us to get the best quality of seafoods, access to many different varieties, and all delivered three to five times a week,” said owner Mike Stokes. “We are also members of the Ocean Wise Seafood Program and committed to environmentally friendly, sustainable seafood harvesting.” Summertime is grilling time, and it’s also the best season for many seafood varieties. From June to August, the store sees lots of fresh salmon, including sockeye and coho from the BC and Alaska coasts. There’s an excellent selection of fresh premium halibut and halibut cheeks from Haida Gwaii, as well as from Road 17 Arctic Char in Oliver. “We have been working with local wineries for years doing pairings of their wines with our seafood recipes, which we feature in our newsletter,” said Stokes. Sign up online or in the store to stay up to date on what’s fresh off the boat. “One of my favourite summertime recipes is caramelized salmon with Okanagan cherry salsa,” he said. (See the recipe in this issue.) For those wanting a break from cooking, there are also Fish n’ Chip shops at both locations. Buy The Sea serves North Pacific cod and halibut, as well as haddock. Try a local summertime favourite: Baja fish tacos made with tortillas from Penticton’s Wrap It Up Tortilla, fresh salsa and crema. Buy The Sea is located in Penticton at 2100 Main Street, next to BCAA’s offices, and in West Kelowna at 2231 Louie Drive in Governor’s Market, next to Starbucks.
Picnic with a View Enjoy the vineyards and lake view at 3361 Glencoe Road in West Kelowna. Kalala is excited to unveil its new picnic area located beside the wine shop. Come discover this serene spot if you are looking to escape the heat, have a picnic or sip an array of wines, all with a view. The picnic area is available to book by the hour for larger groups looking to enjoy the space together. Join Kalala as it hosts events with live music, food trucks, games and wine. Keep an eye out for event postings on Kalala’s Instagram and Facebook pages. For those looking for a lighter red wine to enjoy in the heat, the Kalala Zweigelt 2017 has aromas of cassis and black cherry on the palate. The wine is juicy and bright and pairs well with smoked salmon and cream cheese, shellfish and grilled veggies. It’s the perfect counter to the richness and fat of many grilled foods or smoked cheeses. Come Celebrate 11 Years Kalala has been producing award-winning organic wines since the winery was established by Karnail Singh Sidhu and family in July 2008. Join Kalala to celebrate its 11th anniversary during the first weekend of July. There will be food and games for people of all ages — children are welcome!
WE LET NATURE TAKE THE LEAD Kalala, meaning “Miracle Place”, is the symbol of our commitment to harmony with nature, organic viticulture practices, and our wines. We produce light-to-crisp white wines, bold red wines, and have one of the largest portfolios of organic Icewines in British Columbia. Our philosophy is to allow the varietal characteristics and terroir to be truly expressed and only enhanced by minimal handling during winemaking. We welcome you to visit our tasting room and experience the finest of what the Okanagan has to offer.

On any given day of the week you could find yourself here, hidden in a rustic garden surrounded by vibrant vineyards, relaxing amid the colourful flowers, warm summer sun and soothing melodies of songbirds, and enjoying a glass of wine and some spuntini (charcuterie done the Italian way!). This gentle ambiance is only occasionally broken by the sound of vineyard workers calling out to each other in Italian. You could be forgiven for thinking you’re in a country vineyard in Napoli, but this little corner of Italy is right here at Ciao Bella Winery, tucked into the hills of West Kelowna. It’s a mere five minutes’ drive from the highway, but a world away from the Okanagan. While the garden transports guests to the Italian countryside, the wine shop takes them to a lively Italian market, featuring an award-winning portfolio of artisanal wine crafted in an authentic Italian style. There’s also homemade cappuccinos and espressos, as well as a deli full of spuntini and other Italian treats. Owners Roberto and Sharon Fiume, along with children Antonio and Olivia, have drawn from their family’s deep Italian roots and carved into the Okanagan a truly authentic little corner of Italy. Guests are enthusiastically greeted with a warm ciao. Wine is poured, food is served, friends are made, and before you know it you’ve unexpectedly become part of the famiglia! You may have come for the wine and stayed for the food, but as is true of Italy itself, you’ll find yourself coming back for the people. Must Taste Wines 2018 Pinot Grigio: Created like all Ciao Bella wines in a classic Italian style, this off-dry white greets the taste buds with a vibrant burst of crisp green apple, and finishes with a gently subdued buttery flavour of ripened pears. All of this is coupled with a prominent citrus zest that follows from the nose onto the palate. 2018 Rosé: Seemingly made for picnics at the beach, few wines so elegantly summarize life in the Okanagan as this rosé. It has a fruitful nose, fresh from the garden, with prominent notes of watermelon, grapefruit and an ever-so-subtle hint of Sicilian
blood orange zest that lingers on the back of the palate. All wrapped up in a fabulously pink body that is itself a toast to an Okanagan summer. 2016 Pinot Nero: This medium bodied red won two Gold Medals at both of Canada’s premier National Wine Awards. An aroma of dark cherries follows from the nose onto the palate where it’s paired with notes of dark chocolate. This is not the first time Ciao Bella has been recognized as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir, and this vintage is a fine illustration of why.

FIRST ANNUAL, 97 SOUTH SONG SESSIONS SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL COMES TO THE OKANAGAN LESLEY BUXTON
When it comes to making great pairings, iconic wine writer Karen MacNeil advises in her opus, The Wine Bible, to always “pair great with great.” This philosophy has definitely been adopted by Robin Ott, president of 97 South Holdings Inc., the company behind the Okanagan’s newest festival. The festival matches celebrated award-winning songwriters with the ground-breaking wines of the Okanagan and places them in the Penticton and Naramata Bench areas — two settings
known for their distinct and inspirational beauty. The inaugural 97 South Song Sessions Songwriters Festival runs August 1-2, 2019. The first show will take place at Bench 1775 Winery. A founding sponsor, it was recently named one of the top eight wineries in Canada. The August 2 show is at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and Conference Centre, the venture’s Official Hotel Sponsor. Situated on the southern tip of Lake Okanagan, the resort is known for its beautiful sunsets and deluxe features.
A transplanted Albertan who now lives in Toronto, Robin Ott spent her childhood vacationing in the Okanagan, and has a great affinity for the area. In 2011, she and husband Robert Ott, founder and former CEO of ole — the famed independent music company whose roster of artists includes Rush, Timbaland, and Jordan Davis — bought property on the Naramata Bench. Now 97 South Song Sessions is bringing a passion for both the Okanagan and the songs together. Ott is confident the valley is primed to become
Legend Tim Nichols is known for penning hits like “Live Like You Were Dying” made famous by Tim McGraw, and “The Man I Want To Be” performed by Chris Young. Nichols also worked with Connie Harrington and Jamie Lynn Spears on the hit “I Got The Boy” sung by Jana Kramer.
“Winemaking and the culinary arts feature prominently in the Okanagan Valley and, like songwriting, are versions of storytelling in their own right. Our goal is to create an entertainment experience that works alongside stories promoting the Valley as a global wine and cultural destination,” she said.
THE FO R M AT
T HE TA L E N T The two-night performance event, hosted by Paul McGuire of Entertainment Tonight Canada fame, brings together performances by song-writing greats like: GRAMMY award-winner and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee Tim Nichols; multi-award-winning Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, Bob DiPiero; GRAMMY award nominee and CMA Song of the Year winner Jimmy Yeary; and 2017 CCMA Roots Artist of the Year nominee and 2017 CCMA Songwriter of the Year nominee Jessica Mitchell.
an area of cultural distinction, pointing to the wave of creativity in the wine and food industry as a wonderful example.
The distinguished songwriter Bob DiPiero wrote 15 US number-one hits and wrote Top 20 singles for artists like Tim McGraw, The Oak Ridge Boys and Reba McEntire. His first hit as a songwriter was the 1983 classic “American Made,” performed by The Oak Ridge Boys. Gifted songwriter Jimmy Yeary worked with artists such as Easton Corbin, Martina McBride and LeAnn Rimes. In 2013, with co-writers Connie Harrington and Jessi Alexander, Jimmy Yeary wrote “I Drive Your Truck” which was recorded by Lee Brice. The song went on to be nominated for a GRAMMY Award, an ACM Award and a CMA Award for Country Song of the Year, winning two of the three awards (ACM and CMA). Talented Canadian singer-songwriter Jessica Mitchell is often compared to musical legend Sheryl Crow. Over the years she has opened for artists like Ron Sexsmith, Terri Clark and Bonnie Raitt. A career highlight includes honoring Neil Young at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala at Massey Hall.
The intimate performances will allow the songwriters to interact with the audience, share anecdotes and talk about the experiences behind their hit songs — stories that are often very personal and poignant. The show is completely acoustic, about which Robin says, “The audience will be thoroughly entertained in the style of a traditional guitar pull.” Audience members can enjoy the show comfortably with a glass of award-winning Okanagan wine. “The stories you’ll hear will leave you connected to the music like never before. It’s a backstage pass to the soundtrack of your life,” says Robin. This year is just the beginning. There are plans to expand with a larger event scheduled for 2020 that will span the area, partnering with more winemakers and chefs in the region to elevate the cultural conversation in the Okanagan. This is great news for Okanagan audiences, who will no doubt be eagerly awaiting next year’s event. After all, as Robin says, “There’s simply no better pairing than great wine and great songs." AWARD-WINNING RIESLING BY CRESCENT HILL IS CRISTAL’S FAULT
ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
Double Gold recipient at the 2018 San Francisco International Wine Competition and Silver medalist at the Los Angeles International Wine Packaging Design Competition 2018, Cristal’s Fault Riesling sports a crooked label and a cheeky backstory. Clues to the reason why this Riesling got its name from a wine filter called Cristal can be pieced together from its label and bottle. “Right away you’ll notice the bottle is blue,” says Teresa Murray, Crescent Hill Winery owner. “In Germany, when you want a glass of Riesling, the bottle tells you where it’s from. The off-dry grape clone used in this is originally from the Rhine River region and the blue bottle represents the authenticity.”

JULY/AUGUST 2019
The wine filter, too, was a used, old workhorse brought from Europe by Murray’s father, Glennallyn, and he named it Cristal. Cristal is now roughly 85 years old, and as the story goes, she sprung a leak while the Crescent Hill crew was bottling the Riesling. In the midst of the time-intensive process, two measuring cups were set underneath to capture the escaping elixir. Unable to keep up with the volume of drippage, rumour has it that the team may have started to drink the overflow. It wasn’t until the next day, the crooked labels were noticed. “So,” winks Teresa. “It wasn’t our fault, it was Cristal’s Fault.” Since then, a cheeky illustration was designed by talented artist Janis
Blyth to hint at how things got out of kilter. The label features a tipsy and provocative lass on the floor with keys to the jail dangling from her toes.
“...aromatic and offers honey top notes with tastes of nectarine, apricot and crisp apples.” Beside her is an overturned wineglass, measuring cup and the black pug, Tulip, whose collar states “detained.” In the clasps for the lass’s pigtails, you’ll find the ‘C’ and the ‘H’ of Crescent Hill. All kidding aside, this off-dry Riesling is
“aromatic and offers honey top notes with tastes of nectarine, apricot and crisp apples.” Boasting a strong mineral base with a surprising key lime finish, this delicate and refreshing Riesling is great to sip on its own or with seafood. The back of bottle label notes: “What a delight to drink this offdry original clone from the Rhine River, just ask…we know!...The Crew. This wine pairs well with spicy foods and kool friends.” To taste Cristal’s Fault and learn more about its backstory and other enchanting tales of Crescent Hill, visit the tasting room. Hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm, and Sunday, 11 am to 8 pm. For information on the selection of wines and corresponding awards, see crescenthillwinery.com.

Sometimes I need a siesta, but you can take a meat-and-cheese tray to go.” Gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, seafood and meat-centric choices are crafted with love and prepared simply and honestly. In this friendly atmosphere operated with family values, the 98 per cent gluten-free menu is how Adame eats, rather than a reaction to trends and food sensitivities. MEYER FAMILY VINEYARDS WINE CLUB IS THE SECRET TO VIP ACCESS ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
When your approach to winemaking is “crafting single vineyard wines of excellence” in traditional, French Burgundian style, only small lots of these hand-harvested and handcrafted wines are made. With rave reviews plus national and international recognition of Meyer Family Vineyards (MFV), it’s tough to get your hands on these limited production wines. (By July, many are sold out or in short supply.) VIP at MFV For VIP access, join the MFV Wine Club and feel like family. Membership reaps the benefits of priority access to limited availability wines, library wines and new releases. The last 50 cases of each wine are held for the Wine Club. Members receive: four bottles of award-winning wine three times annually; a 10 per cent
discount on wine purchased online or in the tasting room; complimentary tastings at the winery for members and up to three guests; exclusive access to the online Wine Club store; no additional shipping fees when wine is added to an order; plus invitations to special “family only” events. Pinot Noir Consider Pinot Noir – the heartbreak grape that has thin skin, making it less predictable and increasing vulnerability to climatic conditions, disease and genetic mutation. Yet, in a skilled winemaking team’s hands, the wine is fantastic. Without Wine Club membership, your biggest heartbreak may be missing out on MFV’s four stunning 2017 Pinot Noirs.
Award Winning Wine Says Proprietor JAK Meyer, “We’re proud of our wine and our BC region. As a small family winery, resources are limited in terms of time and expense to enter our wine in competitions. We don’t enter locally. Rather, we are interested in how we do against all Canadian wines and how we stand up against all wines in the world.” MFV strategically submits to competitions with the highest level of judging and the largest and best, such as Wine Align National Wine awards, and internationally, competitions like the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) and Decanter World Wine Awards. MFV has been in the top 12 wineries in Canada and named in the top four small wineries in Canada in each of the past three years.
IWSC 2019 had entries of 10,000 wines from 36 countries: all five MFV wines submitted achieved medals (Gold, three Silver and Bronze). Four were awarded 90 points or more, including 93 points for the Tribute Chardonnay and 96 points for the Micro cuvee Chardonnay. This season, single vineyard Chardonnays are the tasting room focus and Méthode Traditionnelle Sparkling and McLean Creek Gewurztraminer are also poured. For an in-depth tasting, book a private tasting in the vineyard cabana for $30 per person. NIGHTHAWK VINEYARD: A CHARMING, AWARD-WINNING WINERY LESLEY BUXTON
Nighthawk Vineyard is situated just minutes away from Okanagan Falls. This boutique, family farm-gate winery, overlooking picturesque Green Lake valley, is gaining a reputation overseas for making outstanding wines. The secret? The vineyard’s magical location and distinctive terroir offer some of the most optimal grape-growing conditions in the region. The exclusive small-batch winery recently released its new vintages. These limited-edition wines won’t last long, so wine lovers will want to visit Nighthawk very soon to avoid disappointment. Fabulous New Releases The 2016 Gewürztraminer is a gorgeous wine featuring flavours of pineapple, grapefruit and a snap of spice. It’s brilliantly balanced, with a little bit of acidity. This Gewürztraminer complements big-flavoured foods beautifully. Try it with Thai food and other Asian foods as well as traditional
roast ham and chicken. Wonderful on its own as well, it’s the perfect companion for those hot summer days on the patio. This wine is well-priced at $19.90. The 2017 Pinot Noir Rosé is a lovely, crisp Provence-style rosé with bright acidity and lively notes of grapefruit. An exquisite pink in colour, this wine is textured with a fine minerality that truly reflects the terroir of the vineyard. This rosé is very flexible. Enjoy it with a variety of foods: BC oysters or crab, salmon, cured meats, sharp cheeses, roast ham, traditional turkey — it’s a great Thanksgiving wine. It’s also splendid on its own. This rosé is a
fabulous thirst-quencher, just right for summer and very affordable at $21.90 In July, Nighthawk’s signature wine, the 2017 Cabernet Franc will be released. Expect lots of tart blackcurrant, cocoa and vanilla bean flavours. The finish is peppery with spice notes on the end. This is a wine with a great lineage — the 2016 won a Bronze at the BC Wine Awards. The 2017 Cabernet Franc spent 18 months in French Oak and it’s well balanced, with soft, mellow tannins. This is a wine that will age gracefully. Buy two, drink one now — it’s ready and delicious — and cellar the other one
for five to 10 years, and observe the difference time makes. Be forewarned, last year’s vintage sold out. You don’t want to miss this one. This special vintage is a deal at $34.90 Visit Now To learn more about Nighthawk’s remarkable portfolio of wines visit its tasting room. It’s open for the season, Monday to Sunday, from 11 am to 5 pm. KISMET ESTATE WINERY: A DIVINE DESTINATION LESLEY BUXTON
Back in 1991, Sukhi Dhaliwal arrived at the Vancouver airport from India with $5 that he’d borrowed in his pocket. He probably would have laughed at the notion that he and his brother, Balwinder, would one day own an award-winning winery. Yet, fate is unpredictable and no one really knows what the future holds. Of course, it didn’t happen overnight. The brothers worked hard, learning the best growing practices, and then shifting from labouring to managing some of the top vineyards in the region. In time, they became sought-after vineyard consultants and entrepreneurfarmers focused on growing first-rate grapes for the surrounding wineries. Time after time, the wineries using their grapes took major awards. There was no mistaking the pattern.
To avoid disappointment, it’s recommended wine lovers join one of Kismet’s two wine clubs: the Kismet Connection Club and the Kismet Devotion Club, in order to sample the winery’s entire portfolio. Kismet’s reserve vintages are kept exclusively for members. Membership includes other perks like the pick of any available bottles in advance, discounts on wines purchased in the wine shop and online, and free wine tastings. A Heavenly Space Looking for a venue for a wedding, family reunion, a milestone birthday or corporate reception?
Kismet has the place in a picturesque vineyard with access to a private lake. This intimate setting on Mirror Lake, which has been a well-kept secret for years, is now available for private events and can accommodate up to 120 guests. The space comes complete with a choice of catering packages guaranteed to make everyone feel pampered. Feel overwhelmed by the prospect of organizing the big event? Don’t worry, the Kismet team can help. Their experts will assist you, work through your plans, create menus to please your guests and stay on top of your budget.
A Celestial Pairing Plans are in the works at Kismet for dinners with live music. Entertainment starts in July and features music from a diverse range of genres from jazz to local band The Coolies. The dinners will be ticketed events with limited seating of 50. Keep an eye on the Kismet website for details to avoid disappointment. This is a heavenly opportunity. kismetestatewinery.com
In 2013, Sukhi and Balwinder took the plunge and Kismet Estate Winery was born. Nowadays Sukhi concentrates on the vineyards, while Balwinder manages the winery. Wine is Bottled Poetry The young winery has garnered a remarkable list of prestigious awards, including five Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards, eight All Canadian Wine Championship medals and seven Los Angeles International Wine Competition medals. The list goes on and on. It’s quite impressive for a winery that’s a mere six years old.

OLIVER
EXPLORE THE APPELLATIONS OF THE OKANAGAN WITHOUT EVER LEAVING THE TASTING BAR AT RUST WINE BLAKE ALLEN
Excellent wine throughout the world is born from the land upon which it grows, forging an identity unique to each bottle. In a wine region as northerly as BC, this is even more true; however, it is done under the magnifying glass of our extreme climate. From the summer desert heat of Oliver/ Osoyoos to the icy winters of Kelowna and Lake Country, the Okanagan offers a vast array of different varieties and styles of wine produced in such a small geographical area. Indeed, this is one of BC’s premier strengths as an area for fine wine. Experiencing that diversity in person can be a daunting task unless you have plenty of time to visit all the wineries in BC. Driven by this diversity, and in very short order, the Rust Wine Company built a reputation for single-vineyard, single-varietal wines, hailing from some of the oldest vineyards throughout the region’s most distinctive appellations. With a home vineyard and winery nestled on the sun-soaked south end of the iconic Golden Mile, Rust produces wines from Osoyoos, South Cawston, Oliver, Okanagan Falls and West Kelowna. This staggering array of terroirs in some of the finest appellations allows Rust to hone in and showcase exceptional wines from its estate vineyards throughout the region, letting each site speak uniquely through the glass.
To continue Rust Wine Company's track record of excellence, they have added vineyard manager Brett Thiessen to the team. Brett has committed the winery to the pursuit of organic growing principles. As its name and setting suggests, the Rust Wine Company has fully embraced both the history and environment of the Okanagan and neighbouring Similkameen Valleys, featuring a 19th-century log mining cabin, a rustic-yet-modern tasting room with consummate hospitality, and a summer barbecue grill program by Chef Natasha Schooten. Rust’s Old Vines and New Wines spanning the region is a striking example of an experience crafted through the pursuit of excellence. 2018 Rosé Magnum Summers in the Okanagan are long, so it’s always best to get your rosé in a slightly bigger bottle. This 100 per cent Merlot Rosé excites the palate right from the first sip. Its lively flavours of wild strawberries and orange zest burst right from the bottle, leaving in its wake those classic earthy notes that distinguish Similkameen harvests. Paired best on warm summer evenings on the patio with good friends and spicy charcuterie. $5 from every magnum sold is donated to the BC Hospitality Foundation.

GOLD MEDAL WINES AT BLACK HILLS BLAKE ALLEN
Looking for a patio to lounge on? The Vineyard Kitchen at Black Hills Estate Winery is the place to be. It’s now open with a fresh menu and golden wines to pair. The South Okanagan winery has won gold medals from Okanagan Wine Festivals BC Best of Varietal awards for their Syrah and Chardonnay. The awards are a nice nod as Black Hills marks its 20th Anniversary. Terroir + Micro Climate = Great Wines Terroir is key to their award-winning wines, and Black Hills has some of the best grape growing conditions in Canada. It’s located on Black Sage Road — exactly 13 kilometres north of Osoyoos and 10 kilometres south of Oliver, placing it in the Okanagan Valley appellation and centered in the middle of the country’s only official desert. That microclimate leaves it with one of hottest, driest and sunniest sites in the country. In fact, with their northern latitude, they have more sunlight hours than Napa Valley in the key growing months of June through August.
Taste for Yourself Enjoy a guided wine flight using varietal specific Riedel glassware. The educational experience includes current releases and Black Hills' sought-after Nota Bene. Flights range from a $10 introductory flight (two whites and a red) to a $50 VIP Cabana Wine Flight (private tasting in a cabana). There is also a unique sensory experience available at the winery where you put your nose to the test, identifying six white and six red wine aromas in an interactive experience. It’s $40 per person. Book your Black Hills Estate Winery tasting experience by calling 250-498-0666 or emailing tastingexperience@blackhillswinery.com.

OL IV ER GREAT SUMMER REDS AT GEHRINGER BROTHERS ESTATE WINERY
SAVOUR THE SEASON WITH BBQ AND BLUES AT DESERT HILLS AMBER RAE BOUCHARD
LESLEY BUXTON
From the moment you step onto the soil of Desert Hills Winery, you can rest assured your visit will be a memorable one. A visit to the Toor family gem is always authentic and full of surprises. Knowledgeable hosts pour through the well-rounded portfolio of wines with authentic hospitality and a fresh, Indianfusion menu from the Black Sage Bistro. There’s always a reason to keep coming back to this exceptional Oliver winery.
Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery enjoys a reputation as one of the most innovative and talented producers in BC and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Over the years, it's won many high-status awards, including 78 Platinums at Wine Press Northwest magazine’s prestigious annual Bestof-the-Best competition. One might expect Gehringer Brothers wines are for special occasions; however, their wines are incredibly affordable.
Taste the Desert Pop into the tasting room and sample the generous menu of wines, including a divine Viognier that exhibits beautifully intense aromatics and a full, lengthy finish. Try tasting something new like the Ursa Major label led by the next generation of winemaking under Rajen Toor. The vision of Ursa Major is focused on minimal intervention practices and wild fermentations with wines entirely unrefined and unfiltered. It’s a focused winemaking approach that brings the consumer closer to the dry desert terroir of the Black Sage Bench. The Ursa Major label includes Callisto, a beautiful warm-climate expression of Chardonnay and a sumptuous Gamay Noir known as Accustomed to the Dark. The Black Sage terroir is beautifully captured in the bottle and exhibits notes of juicy berries, peppery sagebrush and all the vibrancy of a gentle whole cluster maceration.
Delicious Affordability For example, Summer Night 2018, the winery’s red blend, is a steal at only $13.29. A blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this is an easy-drinking wine that presents aromas of plum, soft dark spices and berries. A gorgeous deep red, this wine works well with grilled steaks and veggies, and big bold pastas. BBQ and Blues Event Join Desert Hills at the Estate on August 31 for the annual BBQ and Blues event! This is a “can’t miss” experience and features an array of tantalizing barbeque menu items, including smoked brisket, chicken and ribs, which pair divinely with a glass of Desert Hills red. Or you can try them with the full, rich, 2015 Zinfandel. Don’t miss your chance to attend the celebration; tickets are available now at deserthills.ca. Price includes two drink tickets.
The Optimum Pinot Noir 2018 is part of the estate’s select line of wines, and still affordable at $18.99. A delicious midweight Pinot Noir, it’s jammy with lots of berry flavour, lightly coloured, and edged with spice and soft, evocative tannins. Pinot Noirs love food. Experiment with rack of lamb, roast pork and wild mushroom risotto, or discover your favourites. The 2018 Merlot from Dry Rock Vineyard is a deep, dense, reddish-purple. It’s heady with the aromas and flavours of black cherries, plums, blackcurrants and
lingering notes of soft spices. This wine can stand up to heavier meals like beef stew, lamb burgers and pork tenderloin. It also stands beautifully on its own and is only $13.99 a bottle. Keeping it Green In 2016, in order to commemorate the winery’s 30th birthday, Gehringer Brothers made a commitment to the environment by installing a new bi-facial solar roof with 144 solar panels, and bi-facial modules that enhance energy production by 25 per cent. In keeping with that obligation to go green, the winery only uses eco-friendly recycled glass (80 per cent recycled, 20 per cent new) from a company in Washington. The same company buys back the glass and recycles it. This method is a much more sustainable practice than continually buying bottles from China.
Desert Hills Estate Winery is family owned & operated. The people that make up the Desert Hills team are innovative & passionate, working to bring their customers the award winning wines they have become known for. 2 Time Recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award For Excellence in Winemaking, Winner of Canada’s Best Red & 2 Time Winner Overall Best Wine! ALWAYS A REASON TO CELEBRATE AMBER RAE BOUCHARD
New life has been breathed into Hidden Chapel Winery in the form of a tiny, energetic bundle of black and brown fur. Little Gracie, a rescue pup, represents the newest member of the Hidden Chapel family and she has been making big impressions in the hearts of all she meets. It is simply impossible not to fall in love with Gracie’s puppy antics, including her adorable tendency to grab her own leash and take herself for a stroll through the lush green estate, which is tucked away at the end of Pinehill Road, north of Oliver. Amazing Grace Gracie is a symbol of the passing of two beloved members of the Hidden Chapel Family. A German ShepherdHusky cross, she takes the reins from one of the winery dogs, Max, who passed away and whose portrait stands proudly on the top shelf of the wine shop, looking out in an eternal greeting to all the guests entering the room. Additionally, Gracie’s name was inspired by Hidden Chapel’s proprietor Deborah Wilde’s sister, whose name was Grace and who unfortunately passed away from cancer. Grace was the inspiration behind the ever-popular Amazing Grace white wine. Made from 100 per cent Riesling, this lovely, off-dry wine exhibits refreshing aromatics of green apple, citrus zest and stone fruits.
A portion of all sales of Amazing Grace is proudly contributed to local cancer treatment/research efforts, the latest of which was awarded to the Penticton Hospital Oncology expansion. Tasters Welcome Swing by the Oliver wine shop to taste this delicious award-winning wine as well as many others. You’ll love the enchanting, tiny chapel situated at the rear of the property. Gracie and the entire team can’t wait to greet you and make you a believer in Hidden Chapel wines. For more information and hours visit hiddenchapelwinery.com.

OLIVER TWIST ESTATE WINERY RELEASES “THE GIRLS” SERIES JUST IN TIME FOR SUMMER JENNA HICKMAN
A visit to Oliver Twist Estate Winery is a trip down memory lane. With a pink-petunia-filled 1938 Chevy truck, a pinstriped Coldspot fridge, and various other retro items spread around the property, stepping onto the estate is like stepping back through time. When winemaker and sole proprietor, Gina Fernandes Harfman, took over the 17-acre winery in 2012, she kept the signature Oliver Twist series, and created her own Nostalgia series. The series pays tribute to the fact her family has lived in the Osoyoos area for four generations. The Nostalgia series labels are a homage to her retro roots, brightly coloured and each sporting a pin-up girl. With names like Rockabilly Red, Boogie Woogie White and Pink Cadillac, each wine is vivacious and fun, just like their maker. The Girls are Here! This summer, all five of the Nostalgia series pin-up girls will come together in Oliver Twist’s newest release, The Girls, which will be sold at Save-On Foods. The Girls series features a red blend, a white blend and a rosé. “We are a winery run by women, so we made The Girls series with strong women in mind,” said Fernandes Harfman. “The wines are fruit forward, and perfect to have after a long day or shared with friends.” Shine ‘n’ Wine The wines will be released just in time for Oliver Twist’s biggest event of the year, its annual Show, Shine ‘n’ Wine. This
year’s event — on Saturday, July 13 — will be the sixth. "The car show is so much fun," said Fernandes Harfman. "This year we have live blues with the James Hay Trio, a pin-up girl competition, swing dance lessons, fun trophies for the classic cars, food trucks, Jackson's Brewhouse, door prizes from our many generous sponsors and, of course, lots of delicious wine!" Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer. A local rider will be at the event to collect donations. The show runs from noon until 5 pm. Crush Party The other event to mark down on your calendar is the annual Crush Party, held to celebrate the harvest in the fall. "We love to make the Crush Party fun for the family,” said Fernandes Harfman. “There's a Lucille Ball look-alike competition and a grape stomp, but we always try and add a twist. Last year, the kids had to hula hoop while stomping grapes.” The event is Saturday, September 28, from noon until 5 pm.
BORDERTOWN’S HARD PRESSED CIDER IS HERE AND IT’S DELICIOUS LESLEY BUXTON
Cider lovers rejoice; the wait is over. Bordertown’s Hard Pressed Cider is now available, and it’s destined to become a big hit. This artisanal apple cider was designed to be the perfect middle ground between some specialty craft ciders — which can be too dry or too sour — and some overly sweet commercial ciders. The result: a delicious, thirst-quenching cider, refreshingly dry, with fleshy, apple fruit taste. Devotees call Hard Pressed “lip-smacking good.” Made to feature the delectable apples grown in Bordertown’s sun-drenched Osoyoos orchards, this cider contains no concentrates, preservatives or added flavours. This is great news for those who suffer from allergic reactions to preservatives. It’s a treat that aficionados can drink without hesitation. With Hard Pressed, there’s nothing to worry about. And it’s gluten free, naturally. The Secret Ingredient The exact blend is a well-guarded secret of the very best and juiciest Okanagan heritage apples, chosen for their distinct characteristics, with each adding its own delicious flavour. It’s fermented and packaged using only the most succulent, fresh-pressed apples. Bordertown owner Mohan Gill understands orchards. For over 20 years, he and his family have grown some of the region’s very best grapes, cherries and apples. Their expertise is legendary. They know fruit and are famous for
their attention to detail. With Hard Pressed Cider, clients can rely on that eye for detail. The family extended its impeccable reputation for top-quality estate wines into the creation of fine cider. It uses the same care and diligence from the growing and processing of its apple varieties as it does with its grape varietals. The increasing popularity of Bordertown’s wines, and the creation of Hard Pressed, means Bordertown is continually expanding its production. This doesn’t mean any changes to the products. continued on page 37

SPIRIT RIDGE: THE NEXT CHAPTER LESLEY BUXTON
At Spirit Ridge the story continues to unfold beautifully. Their new restaurant, The Bear, the Fish, the Root, and the Berry, is a huge hit with both critics and patrons. Named in honour of the Okanagan people’s idea of the Four Food Chiefs, this legend, or captíkʷł as it’s called in Okanagan, tells the story of skəmx̌íst (Bear), N̓ tytyix̌ʷ (Salmon), spíƛ̓əm (Bitterroot) and Siyaʔ (Saskatoon) and how they worked together to feed the People-To-Be. Captíkʷłs like this one were important in Okanagan culture. They were used to pass down key life lessons to the next generation. This included the importance of caring for one’s environment— a viewpoint at the foundation of Spirit Ridge’s new restaurant, which is both informed by its Indigenous roots and powered by the seasons. This is modern vineyard cuisine at its finest and freshest. A place where Daniel Bibby, the executive director and general manager of the resort, hopes visitors will create legends of their own. The Force The talent behind the new restaurant is Executive Chef Murray McDonald. The brilliant Newfoundlander, who decided as a teenager to become a chef so he could travel, has worked in kitchens all over the world. McDonald was the founding executive chef at the celebrated Fogo Island Inn. Under his guidance the inn became an elite destination resort.
The Menu In keeping with the restaurant’s philosophy, the dinner menu is grouped under The Four Food Chiefs and is constantly evolving according to the season. At present under The Bear heading, diners will discover great meat-based dishes such as: spruce roasted bison, juniper-brushed duck breast and rabbit pasta. In The Fish category, diners are treated to BC favourites like wild salmon in a seaweed fishbone broth and maple-sage-roasted veg, sumac Bouillabaisse with mussels, lingcod, prawns, fennel and sweet potatoes, and west coast scallops with apple slaw. Veggies and vegans have plenty of delicious foods to choose from under The Root heading: delicious meals like the wild rice and charred apple bowl, Yamy Yam steak with sunflower pesto, and beetroot tartare. Tami Maki, a proud member of the White Bear First Nations, is the gifted red seal pastry chef behind The Berry — the desserts. Perfectly balanced and not overly sweet, these exotic desserts are a feast for the senses: apple mille feuille, peppered chocolate and Pimihkan with Saskatoon berries and heirloom corncake. The restaurant also boasts hand-crafted cocktails infused with local plants and herbs, and honey produced by the resort’s own hives. It also has an extensive drink menu featuring South Okanagan wines, BC hand-crafted beers and a choice of artisanal spirits from BC distilleries. No detail has been forgotten.

AN ICONIC FIRST FOR ADEGA ESTATE WINERY ON 45TH LESLEY BUXTON
Top Secret The winemakers are keeping the grapes used in the Portao-style wine top secret, although one of the winemakers, Alex Nunes, said the wine is made using stainless steel with no oak.

Legend has it that port was invented in Portugal when two brothers fortified wine they’d made in order to preserve it for a long journey. The wine became lightly oaked in the barrels and the rest is history. Inspired by the white ports of Portugal, Adega Estate Winery released its first Portao-style Branco wine. Possibly one of the first in the South Okanagan, this Portao-style wine is a nod to Adega’s Portuguese heritage.
“This,” he explained, “helps give the fullbodied wine its creamy structure.” Fortified for Flavour Osoyoos’ Tumbleweed Spirits Craft Distillery distilled the fortification used in the wine specifically for the Portao, using the estate’s own grape juice. The result is a wine with gorgeous honeyfruit aromas and flavours of orange, ripe pear, fresh apricot and Ambrosia apple with a light, honey finish. It’s delicious and beautifully balanced. Try it with a piece of white chocolate and enjoy all of its characteristics.
You’re sure to impress your company by serving it with dessert and in dessert! This is a wine that loves sweets. Try it in a fruit salad filled with Okanagan peaches, cherries and apples. Drizzle it over a Portuguese-style flan for that perfect extra touch. Enjoy it with a ricotta cheesecake. For the pièce de résistance, pair it with white chocolate cheesecake. There’s nothing like it.
Port Cocktails and Desserts White ports are excellent in cocktails; experiment with this one for refreshing summer concoctions. In the Porto region of Portugal, it’s enjoyed with tonic water. Chill it and savour it on its own as a late afternoon treat.
Limited Edition The Portao-style wine is a limited edition production with only 233 cases available. It’s a fabulous deal at $25 a bottle. It’s only available at the winery, so portlovers will want to visit Adega very soon before supplies are gone.

VANESSA VINEYARD IS WINNING GOLD FOR ITS ROBUST REDS Named after the Greek word for butterfly, Vanessa Vineyard is nestled on the hillside overlooking the Similkameen River. The 74.55-acre, southeast-facing estate is ideal for producing robust reds. Only producing 3,000 cases per year, Vanessa Vineyard’s wine competes with the best of the best. So far in 2019, the vineyard has won 16 different wine awards — all composed of Golds and Silvers, 13 of them for their reds. Most notably, the winery won Double Gold at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition for its 2014 Meritage. Master Winemaker, Howard Soon Behind the outstanding wine is the winery’s master winemaker, Howard Soon, who is creating incredibly balanced red blends with a unique style. Soon is the longest serving winemaker in Canada, with close to 40 years of winemaking in the Okanagan. “Our Vanessa red blends have you wanting to come back for more,” said Soon. “They have lots of guts and are rich and smooth — they have a lot of character.” Right now, Soon is focusing on producing delicious and interesting red blends, describing
Vanessa’s two red blends — the Meritage and the Right Bank — as robust and distinctive. “We don’t necessarily set out to make our wines different, but they certainly come out that way,” said Soon. “We are different — in a good way.” Order Online Other than taking the trip to Vanessa Vineyard’s spectacular tasting room, you can find select varietals at several restaurants in BC. However, with limited bottles produced, they sell out quickly! To make sure you don’t miss out, the winery gives the option of purchasing online. Shopping from your home couldn’t be easier and more rewarding, as Vanessa Vineyard offers free shipping within BC for purchases of 12 bottles or more.

CAPULET PROPERTIES DELVES DEEPER INTO FRASER VALLEY WINERIES: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE ROSLYNE BUCHANAN
The luxury real estate expertise of Darci Steffins and Carolyn Glazier, Capulet Properties partners, offers a piece of the puzzle for clients, including wineries and winery investors. Witnessing the Fraser Valley mature into a vibrant wine and agricultural region, the partners see the Fraser Valley Wine district as a geographically lucrative investment opportunity for enterprising oenophiles. Interviews that held true to Capulet’s warm, relational approach were initiated with Fraser Valley wineries. As champions of the region’s success and committed to earning “recognition as the top of mind, industry specialists in this area of real estate,” the Capulet partners were excited by their findings. Glass House Estate Winery Glass House Estate Winery is a familyfounded vineyard and boutique winery, producing hand-selected, low-yield artisan wine in South Langley. Its name pays homage to the family’s more than 60-year history in the greenhouse industry that started in the Netherlands and continued in Canada. Joseph Richard Group (one of BC’s fasting growing hospitality companies) CEO Ryan Moreno has been looking to get into the wine business for the past couple of years. He has been observing the developing Fraser Valley wine industry firsthand, since his private estate is located a stone’s throw from one of the most recognized names in BC wines. His vision to branch into wine production and bring the restaurant concept into the winery with an elevated experience, became a reality with a recent agreement to operate Glass House Estate Winery.

RYAN MORENO CEO JOSEPH RICHARD GROUP
Under the management of Joseph Richard Grou, many exciting plans are in the works, including the possibility of JRG-branded products and gourmet dinner seatings right at the winery. Cavallo Winery President and CEO Frank Gigliotti left a career with Columbia Records and the BC Lions to become a winemaker. After creating14 vintages in a private wine club, he expanded into a larger project in the Fraser Valley called Cavallo Winery. With savvy business approaches and Napa Valley connections, he and partners John Claus, Craig Watson and Trevor Broad opened a commercial winery in Langley. Cavallo positions itself as “the world’s first international winery, sourcing the finest grapes and materials from all over the world to make the finest wines imaginable.” The highly styled tasting room has a style that feels like the Napa Valley. Cavallo has big plans to open tasting rooms in the US and create locations like a “Starbucks of wines.” Blackwood Lane Winery A dream of Carlos Lee, president/CEO/ winemaker, and partners, Blackwood Lane Winery’s motto is “Bonus Vita et Bonus Amici” (Good Life and Good Friends). “Wines that lived up to their high standards and expectations” was the
goal. Born in South Korea, Lee was raised an ex-patriate in Peru. The opportunity to taste a lot of wine developed his palate. After he retired, he came to BC to care for his aging parents. It was then he discovered the high quality of BC grapes. His life-long passion to make superior wines could be pursued here rather than in Tuscany or Southern France. The Blackwood Lane founders realized people in Greater Vancouver had to travel to the Okanagan to acquire BC’s best wines. Blackwood decided to bring the wines to them. The boutique winery was established on 12.2 acres of beautiful south-facing slopes in the Fraser Valley wine corridor and has since received Best of BC Experience Best View in the 2018 The Best of BC Wine Country Awards. They secured the best grapes from the Oliver/Osoyoos area. Using traditional, proven techniques (without chemicals or mechanical pumps) and uncompromising quality (using only new barrels), premium wines are created to accolades and praise from wine lovers and connoisseurs. More Wineries! In 2001, Township 7 opened in the charming 7th Township of Langley and was the first to purchase a second holding on iconic Naramata Bench. Wines are old-world inspired and
BLACKWOOD LANE
handcrafted with a minimalist philosophy. Both locations offer wine tasting, vineyard side picnics and fun events, including arts and culinary festivals. Also leveraging the best of both worlds, Singletree Winery, Abbotsford, recently opened its Naramata Bench site. Chaberton Estate Winery is the oldest winery in the Fraser Valley and one of the top five in BC. Located amid rolling hills of picturesque South Langley since 1991, it offers dining in Bacchus Bistro, overlooking vineyards. Backyard Vineyards in Langley offers a delightful tasting room. Award-winning varietals, blended and bubbly BC VQA wines have been produced here since 2009. Roughly a 45-minute drive into the heart of Vancouver or optional 13-minute helicopter ride, Fraser Valley wineries are indicative of the opportunities within easy access of Vancouver’s internationally renowned urban market.
