A TALE OF TWO ANDREWS AT TINHORN CREEK KATIE TRUSCOTT Situated in the South Okanagan, Tinhorn Creek is surrounded by pristine, natural and rugged beauty. Perched mid-hillside, at the base of the Golden Mile hiking trail, the winery offers sweeping views of the valley and beyond to its visitors. The creek flows down the steep mountain slope behind the vineyard; its curvy shape is replicated on the Tinhorn Creek wine labels.

Thanks to a strict ethos and years of conscious effort by the founders, the vineyard is a place where natural biodiversity thrives.

Bears are a typical sighting during harvest, known to wander down from the mountainside and load up on the Gewürztraminer, munching up to a tonne of grapes in a single feeding. The vineyard property lines are enclosed by a snake barrier, allowing protected indigenous rattlesnakes to migrate naturally while protecting vineyard workers from snakes. The vineyards are Salmon Safe certified, and the winery is carbon neutral, meaning any net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is paid back through a carbon offset program.

Meet the Andrews The environment at Tinhorn Creek is alive and thriving, and as a result, so are the vines. Andrew Moon, Tinhorn Creek’s viticulturist since 2008, will tell you that he is simply a caretaker in the raw environment. Tinhorn Creek’s vines serve as a vessel, expressing the land in a bottle. Tinhorn Creek’s winemaker since 2014, Andrew Windsor, reiterates this belief by stating that the wines he produces are expressions of Tinhorn’s terroir, complemented by some pretty savvy, sustainable winemaking techniques.

I was privileged to spend the day with Tinhorn’s two Andrews. They share the same name and the same principles, working in what they both define as a fullcircle partnership.

Their viticulturist/winemaker relationship is a symbiotic one. Two extremely laid-back professionals working together to produce exceptional and expressive wines.

Andrew Moon – Viticulturist Andrew Moon’s passion for wine radiates.

Moon is originally from Australia, but now calls the South Okanagan home. Cruising around the vineyard, Moon is in his happy place, which is communicated through his infectious laugh.

Standing at the top of the vineyard, overlooking the entire property, he turns to me and states that he has “the best job on the planet.”

Andrew Windsor – Winemaker Toronto native Andrew Windsor, creator/ winemaker at Tinhorn Creek, is just as passionate about what he does. In 2008, after completing his master’s degree in enology, Windsor spent the next six years living and making wine in places like Marlborough, Yarra Valley and the Northern Rhône.

Windsor is creative in how he implements sustainable practices in his winemaking. He’s been known to take advantage of the below-freezing Okanagan winter weather to cold stabilize his wines, with no mechanization necessary. Windsor tells me he has an inherent, experimental nature and is thankful for the freedom to create at Tinhorn Creek. He describes his winemaking style as proactive rather than reactive. Under Windsor’s direction, The Creek was born: an ultra-premium Flagship wine exclusively from estate vineyards. Once a year, the Tinhorn Creek Innovation series releases an interesting, idiosyncratic wine or two. Keep an eye out for this!

Tour Tinhorn Tinhorn Creek winery is an interactive one — a place where guests can witness every aspect of wine and its production. Tours are available with a guide or can be self-guided. Guests join in all the fun at harvest, able to view exactly what’s going on from various vantage points in the winery. A pocket of vines, showcasing Tinhorn Creek’s core varietals, provides a perfect picnicking spot for guests who are encouraged to bring their own picnic basket and pick fresh grapes to enjoy with lunch. Grapes are even served up in the tasting room where one can compare the nuances of the fresh fruit against the finished product.

Events and Wine Club A proudly Canadian establishment, Tinhorn Creek offers its Canadian Concert Series, where up to 500 guests can sip from the beautiful portfolio of wines, enjoy local music and bask in the views from the amphitheater. The winery also hosts a plethora of other wine-related events. Be sure to book your tickets for the upcoming event in October: Grazing in the Vineyard.

Tinhorn Creek offers plenty of special perks and advantages through its wine club, the Crush Club. Members get first dibs to small lot wines and prereleases. Exclusive dinners and parties are just some of the benefits involved in being a member.

FALL INTO WINTER IN VERNON DARCY NYBO The weather may be cooler, but there are still plenty of things to do in Vernon. Whether it’s you and a friend or the whole family, it’s time to explore, eat and enjoy!

Autumn Fun with Vernon Fall Festivals The changing colours in Vernon signal it’s time for the harvest, great food and outdoor adventure. In September and October, you’ll find fresh produce from the fields. Bite into juicy pears or crunchy apples. Don’t forget to stock up on squashes, pumpkins and other great artisan goodies at the Vernon Farmers' Market.

Grab the kids and celebrate harvest time at Davison Orchards. Their Apple Harvest Festival starts in early September and runs until the apples are gone. Take the Johnny Popper Orchard Tour into the orchard and pick some delicious apples.

Every weekend, farmers choose a new apple variety to pick. Go every weekend!

After the apples are gone, Davison Orchards offers a Pumpkin Festival every weekend in October. Take a ride out to the pumpkin patch on the Johnny Popper Orchard Train and pick your very own Jack-O-Lantern. The best part is the great food. Sink your teeth into a caramel apple, or try some apple cider donuts and fresh baked apple pie.

Also in October, the O'Keefe Ranch has its annual Family Daze and Corn Maze on the weekends from 11 am to 4 pm. They dare you to check out the haunted corn maze with the Field of Screams. Those who prefer less ghostly fun can take a wagon ride, ride a pony or visit the general store.

Liquid Refreshments Vernon is home to the BX Press Cidery, Marten Brew Pub, Okanagan Spirits and Honeymoon Meadery. You can taste the goodness of the cider at the BX Press Cidery, open three days a week in the cooler months. Marten Brew Pub is a craft brewery and a restaurant with flights of handcrafted beer. Over at Okanagan Spirits, you’ll find award-winning liqueurs, brandy, absinthe, vodka, gin, whisky, grappa, aquavit and bitters. And don’t forget the mead! Honeymoon Meadery has been turning out award-winning mead for over 10 years now.

Wine Tours There are vineyards in Vernon and the wineries are only 20 minutes away. Mojo Tours out of Vernon is happy to take you on the Scenic Sip tour, just outside of Vernon. Relax and let someone else do the driving as you sip and sample your way through the day.

Foodie Heaven Those who want a bit more food-related fun should check out Helmet’s Sausage Kitchen in Vernon. Create your own charcuterie board with handcrafted European sausage, smoked meats and deli goodies. Cheese lovers take note, many of the

locally produced cheeses can be found at the Vernon Farmers’ Market. If you prefer, drive out to Triple Island Cheese Farm outside of Cherryville or take in the cheese festival in Armstrong in November.

Aside from all the great fresh produce, meats and cheeses in Vernon, there is an abundance of great restaurants to choose from. The multi-ethnic restaurant scene will have your mouth watering. Choose from family dining, fast food, fine dining, international cuisine, pub fare and even food trucks. There are dozens of Asian food restaurants as well as Italian, Greek, Filipino, Indian and Mexican, just to name a few.

Hike and Bike The Vernon area is well known for its hiking and biking trails. From trails that meander through the city, to lakeside adventures and exhilarating mountain scenery, there’s a trail just right for you. There’s even fat biking in the winter all around Vernon.

Winter Wonderland and a Carnival When the snow starts to fall, that means it’s time to bundle up and get outdoors.

There’s Nordic skiing, downhill, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing, skating and snowmobiling at SilverStar. Vernon Winter Carnival offers hot air balloons, ice sculpting, tons of arts and cultural events and a pirate theme!

Outdoor Theatre The Caravan Farm Theatre hosts a walk of terror at the end of October and a winter sleigh ride experience from mid-December to the end of December. It’s the world’s only horse-drawn winter sleigh ride theatre experience.

RICCO BAMBINO: CHARMINGLY AVANT-GARD LESLEY BUXTON The ambience at Ricco Bambino is Italian elegance meets new nostalgia; understated and fun, inviting and relaxed. It’s feminine with a sexy, masculine edge – think Sean Connery as Bond in Thunderball in his open pink shirt and white shorts. The upholstery is crushed velvet; the colour scheme is light pink and pale gold, accented with large potted palms, green spaces and two state-ofthe-art concrete and stainless-steel tanks. This space is every iconic image you’ve ever known: Sophia Loren’s '70s-style mink coat, Michelle Pfeiffer’s long white halter dress in Scarface, Madonna strutting the stage in her iconic Gaultier bustier.

Everything here screams Rome, yet somehow feels like Kelowna. This urban winery blurs the lines between winery, wine shop and bar.

Typically, wineries start as estates growing grapes, and slowly evolve into becoming wineries. Ricco Bambino, on the other hand, started by making wines to suit its vision and then found a space. Though this winery’s evolution was avantgarde, be assured the operators know what they’re doing. Unusual as their approach might be, it has allowed them certain freedoms. In particular, the ability — from vintage to vintage — to select the very best organic grapes from a variety of estates in the South Okanagan, thus guaranteeing top quality fruit to create enticing, unforgettable, minimal-interference wines that showcase the region’s unique microclimate.

Introducing Crooked Crown Ricco Bambino recently purchased Crooked Crown, a gorgeous 10-acre estate in Oliver, a region celebrated for the quality of its terroir. The winery is planning for the future. Eventually, they want a land-based winery housed on the estate; a site where they can continue creating their special brand of less-is-more wines.

Come Enjoy a Personal Wine Experience Another significant distinction is their wine-tasting philosophy. Here, the emphasis is on crafting a personal wine experience centred around the needs of the guest.

The sommelier will visit the guest’s table. Learn from them as little or as much as you like; if you’re curious, go deep. If not, relax and enjoy the wines. Tastings feature three or six wines, all extraordinary. Our advice: try all six.

Start with the Kicked Out of the Country Club Brut, a Metodo Italiano Sparkling Brut that, like Ricco Bambino’s ambience, is delightfully light and classic. This wine goes down far too easily. It’s crisp and fresh with subtle lemon notes, peaches and blossoms. Invite your significant other to indulge and share a bottle.

Very Troubled Child Rosé Brut is a Metodo Italiano Sparkling Rosé Brut the same colour of pink as the winery’s walls.

It is elegant, yet approachable, filled with endless fine bubbles. Imagine hints of sumptuous cherry blossom cream, ripe strawberries and bright red cherries.

Unrefined, unfiltered, unapologetic, the Syrah is tremendously drinkable. Brave and bursting with bold red fruits, it emulates classic white pepper with a complementry yet subtle bouquet of lavender, sage and aloe. It’s a brilliant example of what nature can produce under a masterful but gentle hand.

Everything here screams Rome, yet somehow feels like Kelowna

The Rosé is a charming enigma, made of 100% Cabernet Franc. It’s field strawberries with a hit of savoury aromatics and a kick of dry spice. Perfect for drinking après shoe-shopping with friends. Be warned: it’s mouth-watering, and with only 350 cases, it certainly won’t last.

The Vino Bianco is a charismatic blend of Riesling and Viognier. Crisp, bright and refreshing, it’s also far too drinkable — it’s nearly impossible to drink only one glass.

This persuasive wine presents notes of pineapple, pear, bright lemon and white flower, with a subtle mineral finish.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Viognier. Light and dry, it presents plush aromatics with a sumptuous mouthfeel of apricot, pineapple and ripe lemon pulp.

Textured floral notes and lemon drops linger for a long finish. It is a wine designed for hot, lingering Sunday afternoons on the patio.

Get Your Limited Edition Wines Not only are Ricco Bambino’s wines scrumptious but they’re packaged beautifully.

The bottles, which are made in France by Verallia and Saver glass, look like antique decanters. The glass stops look like crystal doorknobs and can be reused. All Ricco Bambino’s wines are limited editions. They’re available online, at The Curious Café and La Bussola Restaurant, and at Ricco Bambino’s in Kelowna, where the motto is: “Come for a taste, stay for a glass, leave with a bottle.”

PLATINUM AT CEDARCREEK ESTATE WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN At CedarCreek Estate Winery, two tiers of elegant wines — Estate and Platinum — are crafted with care. The Platinum tier is comprised of the best of the vineyard grapes. Each year, the CedarCreek team seeks out grapes representative of interesting local sites and old heritage blocks to develop Platinum single-vineyard or single-block series wines.

CedarCreek’s wines are carefully cultivated and finessed, rather than simply made, bottled or produced.

In WineAlign’s recent 2018 National Wine Awards Competition (NWAC), the 2016 Platinum Block 5 Chardonnay earned a prestigious Platinum Medal. NWAC awarded Gold medals to 2014 Platinum, The Last Word (red blend) and 2017 Platinum Block 3 Riesling; Silver medals to 2014 Platinum Desert Ridge Meritage and 2016 Platinum Riesling Icewine. In all, medals awarded included one platinum, three gold, five silver and four bronze, placing CedarCreek seventh in the 2018 NWAC’s Top Wineries in Canada — which is no small feat, as this year’s awards are considered “the largest and most comprehensive wine competition in Canadian history.”

As the vines age, their individual characteristics emerge.

Over time, allowing for vintage variation, the team becomes comfortable with the consistency of character. Then, different

Liquid Chefs & the Cocktail Program Speaking of drinks, RauDZ has always had a strong cocktail program, which dates back to the days when BC bar industry legend, Gerry Jobe, led the team.

Over the years, the liquid chefs at RauDZ have continued to be a creative force in the cocktail field, snapping up awards in competitions. Leveraging the Okanagan’s bounty into the best field-to-glass drinks, with house-made fruit purées, reductions, freshly harvested lavender, thyme, mint and whatever else is fresh and seasonal, is a fine art at RauDZ. Try a RauDZ Caesar that adds house-made beef stock, hot sauce, horseradish and pickled carrot with Illichmann’s sausage.

Or Martinis, Gin Mules and Sangrias that highlight seasonal fruit! Ask your server for selections of Barrel-Aged Cocktails — classic cocktails that have been aged for five-plus weeks in charred American Oak barrels. It’s a local field trip even to peruse the list! You’ll find recipes for a selection of these cocktails in the Twilight chapter of The Okanagan Table: The Art of Everyday Home Cooking by Chef Rod Butters. Naturally, whenever possible, regional distilleries, wineries, breweries and cideries are the stars.

On the topic of local producers, RauDZ is creating its own private label gin in collaboration with long-time distillery partner Okanagan Spirits. RauDZ's private label gin will be poured exclusively in the restaurant this fall. This special recipe, developed with RauDZ’s own talented Liquid Chefs, is formulated as cucumberforward with florals in the background to complement RauDZ cocktails and menus.

It is 100 per cent local, of course! It contains mock orange, a native BC shrub, hand foraged by Okanagan Spirits’ Tyler Dyck from Poplar Point, at the foot of Knox Mountain. Additionally, Orris Root — the rootstock of an iris — adds a violet floral note perfect for gin and tonics. It doesn’t get more fresh and local.

Let’s face it: the Kelowna life is the good life! HARVEST TIME Harvest season is in full swing and it’s time to celebrate all the hard-working farmers, growers, chefs, beverage creators and everyone involved in providing us with delicious things to eat and drink.

I love the harvest season. I love the cooler weather, the changing of the leaves, that certain crispness that you can feel in the air. I love the fruit and produce stands that dot the highways and byways to and from the wineries, cideries, meaderies and distilleries. It’s also my favourite time to go out and celebrate our great province.

Most of our communities celebrate the harvest season with festivals and events that showcase the bounty of BC. There’s the hot pepper festival in Keremeos called the Similkameen Sizzle, an Apple Harvest Festival in Vernon and the Westjet Wine Tasting (one of many wine events this fall) in Kelowna. The Lower Mainland has Food Truck Festivals in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Down by the US border you’ll find fall fairs that celebrate bounty in Grand Forks and Rock Creek. As you head into the Thompson Valley, you’ll find more fall fairs and rodeos, all complete with great food and drink. Make your way up to the northern climes and you’ll find even more harvest celebrations in large and small communities. Farmers’ markets overflow with produce and there’s always fresh, home-baked pie for sale somewhere. Up in Prince George they celebrate the season with wine at Sip Fest. On Vancouver Island, there’s everything from beer festivals, to fungus festivals, to wine festivals. Then up at Haida Gwaii they celebrate fall with their Wild Harvest Festival and salmon derbies.

DEEP ROOTS AND THE PERFECTION OF AN OKANAGAN CLASSIC BLAKE ALLEN

The best gems are always hidden just a little off the beaten path. Perched above West Kelowna, along the charmingly rural West Kelowna farm loop, rests a serene and authentic slice of Italy at Ciao Bella Winery.

Where Famiglia is Always Welcome This working-farm vineyard spans oceans and continents. Owners Roberto and Sharon Fiume maintain an authentic Italian working farm in the heart of the Okanagan. This time of year, guests can unwind in the peaceful garden lounge and listen in on the vineyard workers calling out to each other in Italian. Guests are always greeted at the door with a warm benvenuto, and a freshly prepared plate of spuntini (charcuterie, the Italian way) is always available, along with cappuccinos for designated drivers. You become part of the famiglia here before you’ve even sampled the first wine.

The family roots run deep here, as do the stubby and stout old-growth vines that line the garden lounge. At more than 60 years old, they are the oldest in West Kelowna. Among these vines are the most famous and internationally acclaimed of Okanagan grapes, the Pinot Noir (known here by their proper Italian title, Pinot Nero). Hand-picked and crafted in small batches in a classic Italian style reminiscent of the Fiume’s homeland, prior vintages of the Pinot Nero have been recognized as the Best in BC, and this year’s 2016 has been awarded a Gold at both the Wine Align and All Canadian National Wine Awards.

Before the summer sun fades from the Okanagan, swing on by this authentic slice of Napoli to sample both the traditional Italian lifestyle and one of the best Pinot Noirs in Canada.

Must-Try Wines 2017 Pinot Grigio: This classic off-dry white is defined by strong notes of green apples and apricots, complemented by a calming citric nose.

2016 Rosé: This pink wine is ideal for picnics at the beach. Few wines so elegantly summarize life in the Okanagan as this rosé. A fruitful nose, fresh out of the garden, with prominent notes of strawberries,

rhubarb, and an ever-so-subtle hint of watermelon linger on the back of the palate.

2016 Pinot Nero: Only recently awoken from its 13-month oaked slumber, this light-bodied red, made in the traditional Italian-style, was awarded two Gold Medals this year at both of Canada’s premier National Wine Awards. A rich aroma of Okanagan dark cherries follows from the nose onto the palate, where it’s paired with smooth notes of dark chocolate. This is not the first time Ciao Bella has been recognized as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir, and this vintage is a fine illustration of why.

Mmmmm Merlot Summerland Estate produces two very different Merlots, both named after the two ending digits of the longitude and latitude location, 88, which also represents good fortune and continuity. The 2016 88 Merlot offers delicate and soft tannins, aged for only eight months in French barrels. It has a Black cherry and sweet plum finish with smooth vanilla cream notes that elegantly exemplify the unique terroir of Summerland Estate Winery. The 2016 Reserve Merlot offers more of a medium tannin structure expressing dark berries and rich cocoa. Aged 24 months in French barrels, it creates a medium body and vanilla bean finish.

The estate also uses 50 per cent Merlot blended with Pinot Noir in its rosé. With this kind of diversity, if anyone really had me at Merlot, these guys take the cake.

Crescent Hill Winery is distinguished as one of Penticton’s earliest vineyards.

Owner Teresa Murray-Wiseman and her family love to have fun with the brand.

Take the highly acclaimed blush, a light, bright, floral and fruity wine irreverently named Hissy Fit. Once a Hobby Teresa’s father, Glenallyn, planted his vines roughly 40 years ago to indulge his winemaking hobby. Leveraging his self-taught knowledge and information gleaned from his professional winemaker friend Tom Hoenisch, plus research by Elias Phiniotis, he planted Vinifera grapes. By 1980, he made his first vintage using European equipment he'd purchased. Still, he never took himself too seriously. He sold his “juice” without a winery license to friends, neighbours, and to Casabello and Calona Wines.

From Family Recipe to #1 Seller Hissy Fit is Glenallyn’s old recipe that the family rediscovered and refined by current winemaker Russell Wiseman, Teresa’s husband. Today, Crescent Hill’s number one seller, it was famously known in Glenallyn’s circles as “blush.”

Teresa’s sister Teena Murray-Christiansen first recalled it and suggested, “Why don’t we make some of Dad’s blush?” Family folklore hints that the original may have sported a touch of moonshine. However, Russell’s modern refinements create a refreshing twist on white wine, infused instead with raspberries. Layered with Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Verdelet and raspberry infusion, expect a fruit blast on the nose and tongue at the outset. In the middle, it balances well to a stone fruit sensation and closes out clearly citrus.

Have a Hissy Fit The label by talented local artist Janis Blyth playfully depicts the light and fun spirit of the wine. On the back it states: “Are you a PRINCESS, a demanding DIVA, or just OVER WORKED? If yes, then you are familiar with the following…TANTRUMS, OUTBURSTS, AGITATIONS, EXPLOSIONS, ERUPTIONS, FIRE WORKS, FLARE UPS, HUFFS AND DELIRIUMS. Well now there is a wine made JUST for you. Go ahead.

Have a HISSY FIT, you deserve it!” Clearly, it’s a teasing prompt to just enjoy the wine and not take yourself too seriously. (The adjacent illustration extends this tenour and exemplifies the family focus by including a precocious young lady who happens to be Teresa’s niece, Sophie — granddaughter of Glenallyn.)

Hissy Fit, says Teresa, receives a warm appraisal from young to old, men and women. “It’s often purchased as a gift for baby and bridal showers, birthday and weddings.” It has also been praised by wine experts, receiving such awards as Silver for Semi Dry Rosé in the Great American International Wine Competition New York.

VANESSA VINEYARD: TWO ICONIC REDS BOMBARDED BY THE SUN LESLEY BUXTON Howard Soon, acclaimed Master Winemaker at Vanessa Vineyard, remembers 2015 well. “[It was] the kind of summer where you could just snap your fingers and the grapes were killer ripe.” He knew this would be an important year for their winery’s Cabernet Franc.

“Heat makes wine rich,” he explains.

The vines grow on sloping, welldrained, rocky terrain and bask in the sun from west to southwest exposure. The result: Cabernet Franc 2015, winner of Double Gold, Best in Category, at the All Canadian Wine Championships 2018. This year alone, Vanessa has received nine medals from three prestigious competitions.

This Cabernet Franc is enticing.

Think aromas of black, brambly blackberry combined with freshly ground coffee beans, Okanagan cherry and toasty oak, loaded with dark tantalizing flavours of North African dates, framed by Madagascar vanilla and heady spice on the palate. It is a wine with fortitude, bearing and a lingering finish.

The second red wine of note is the Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes for

Vanessa’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 are grown on the highest point of the estate. Howard says they look as if they’re tortured — bombarded by sunlight, struggling to survive.

The fact these vines are fighting to live is good news for the winemaker.

In their struggle, the vines pour all their energy into production, and as a result, the small-yield grapes are bursting with rich flavour and juice.

The outcome is an iconic wine, beautifully esoteric, that opens with elegant mint and black currant aromas.

On the palate, it’s mature, with flavours of freshly picked blackcurrants, wild tart blackberries, rich espresso and dark Belgian chocolate on the finish.

Meyer Family Vineyards (MFV) won a Platinum, three Gold and two Silver Medals, was awarded fourth place in the category of Small Winery (under 10,000 cases) and 11th Overall Winery in Canada.

Award-Winning Pinot Noir Another Nighthawk Red that fared well at NWAC was Nighthawk’s 2015 estategrown Pinot Noir. “This wine is a great reflection of our terroir,” says winery owner, Daniel Bibby. “It features the earthy characteristics of Pinot, with a distinctive minerality and a hint of spice.” A complex wine, the Pinot Noir was finished in Tuscan concrete tanks, producing a wonderfully textured mouthfeel. Bronze and Silver Chardonnay Nighthawk’s fabulous 2016 Chardonnay recently won two medals: a Bronze at NWAC and a Silver at the British Colombia’s Wine Awards — the province’s oldest and largest competition. This fine, estate-grown Chardonnay was aged for eight months in oak and features aromatic sophistication and mineral complexities characteristic of Nighthawk’s high-altitude vineyard. Imagine a silky-smooth mid-palate with a crisp, lengthy finish: delicious. Try it with tarragon lemon chicken, a Bay scallop chowder with bacon and potatoes or take it on a picnic and enjoy it with one of the Okanagan’s famous views. It is a charming savoury wine known for its purity of fruit and aromas of caramel, spice and pepper. It features flavours of dark berries, white pepper, dark fruit and vanilla oak.

Focussing on locally sourced ingredients fresh produce, the Kitchen changes their menu each month. Vineyard Kitchen offers light fare, such as charcuterie boards, salads, and flatbreads. Each item is perfectly customized to pair with one of their exceptional wines.

AWARDS FOR KISMET ESTATE WINERY: PART OF ITS DESTINY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN

Opening the Kismet Estate Winery was destiny for the Dhaliwal family. The word “Kismet” is, in fact, “destiny” in Punjabi.

Immigrating to Canada in the 1990s with a mere five dollars in his pocket, Sukhwinder Dhaliwal settled into the Okanagan, working hard in agriculture, and was eventually joined by his brother, Balwinder. Their focus turned to managing vineyards as they gained insight into the industry while buying vineyard property on the side. After shifting their efforts into their own vineyards, selling grapes and consulting as leading grape growers, Sukhwinder’s daughter Neelam shares, “We felt something was missing.

We wanted to be on the front end interacting with wine consumers and perhaps make a bit more money for our attention to detail in the vineyards.”

While about 90 per cent of the grapes from their 350 acres of property are purchased by other wineries, 10 per cent are kept for Kismet wines. Many varieties are grown there, including rare grapes like Mourvèdre and Grenache. With their track record of growing quality fruit, the brothers were confident that they’d have good quality wine if they had their own winery to carefully craft their own premier grapes.

Sauvignon Reserve and 2016 Secret Red (red blends) while 2017 Lotus (rosé) took Silver.

In the 2018 All Canadian Wine Championships, 2017 Pinot Grigio, 2016 Syrah and 2016 Mantra (Bordeaux blends) achieved Gold; 2017 Viognier, 2017 Saféd (white blends) and 2015 Cabernet Franc all received Silver; and 2016 Karma (Bordeaux blends) earned Bronze.

LESLEY BUXTON From its famous, annual Show Shine ‘n’ Wine event, to its Crush Party, Oliver Twist Estate Winery knows how to have fun.

The winery just released its fifth vintage in the NOSTALGIA series with new pin-up girl, Cindy Lou, claiming the bottle. Chardonnay Their unoaked Chardonnay won Double Gold and Best of Class at the prestigious 2018 Indy International Wine Competition (IIWC). This Chardonnay, made only in stainless steel, enjoys a slow-cool fermentation and a drawnout sur lie process. (Sur lie is a process developed in Burgundy in which the aging wines aren’t filtered but kept in contact with dead yeast cells.) The process adds a gorgeous complexity and creamy feel to this wine. On the palate, there are hints of pear and pineapple.

Light, almost translucent with a gold sheen, there’s an unexpected weight to this wine; a subtle, harmonious fullness.

“Each character embodies the personality of the wine,” says Gina Harfman, owner and winemaker at Oliver Twist Estate Winery. “For our new 2017 Chantilly Lace, a semi-sweet bubbly Kerner blend, we wanted her to have a joyful personality — someone who captures the entire room’s attention.”

Oliver Twist’s fall release is a wine to warm you up this fall. The 2014 Syrah, aged in French and American oak, is fruit-forward. Its notes of white pepper, sage and blackberry make it a seamless pairing with wild game, such as venison or lamb.

John Schreiner, one of Canada’s most respected wine critics, gave the new release 92 points.

Auxerrois The estate’s 2017 Auxerrois won a Gold and a Best of Class at IIWC. This rare white grape, named for a town in the Burgundy region of France, was first introduced to BC in the seventies by a researcher and has since flourished. However, the availability of the plants was not widespread. Luckily, the Gehringers managed to obtain cuttings of the research plants. Nowadays their offspring thrive on the Golden Mile. A mature, intriguing wine, the Auxerrois exposes itself slowly. It’s captivating, with flavours of melon and passionfruit, and perfect for gatherings where there’s a range of palates.

Merlot The Gehringer Brothers’ 2016 Merlot is also making a splash competitively. It won a Gold at IIWC. Grown in the heart of Canada’s desert, identified by its distinctive microclimate and rocky soils, this Merlot has the presence of a heavier red with a balance of fruit flavours that give it a marvellous drinkability and finish. It’s smooth, with flavours of Okanagan cherries, plum and rich cassis. It’s food-friendly and pairs well with hearty meals or comfort foods like a favourite dark chocolate. It’s also delicious on its own, enjoyed with a good book and company.

A MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY AT CULMINA LESLEY BUXTON

Friday Fun The weekend’s celebratory events kick off with a special edition of the Open Deck series featuring R&D by Culmina wines. Sumptuous Saturday On September 15 the festivities continue, with a rare opportunity to attend a multi-course Collaborative Chefs’ Dinner created by two of Vancouver Magazine’s favourite chefs: Chef Alex Chen of Vancouver’s Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar and Chef Mark Filatow of Kelowna’s Waterfront Wines Restaurant.

Chef Alex Chen is known for guiding Team Canada to a top-10 finish at the 2013 Bocuse d’Or in Lyon, France (an incredibly prestigious gastronomic competition). He won the top spot in both the 2015 and 2017 editions of the annual Gold Medal Plates regional championships in Victoria, BC, as well as the Gold Medal at this year’s Canadian Culinary Championships in Kelowna.

Chef Mark Filatow learned his craft at some of the most celebrated restaurants in BC, including Tofino’s Wickaninnish Inn, Vancouver’s Bishops and Diva at the Met and Kelowna’s Fresco Restaurant. In 2001, he became a member of the prestigious Sommelier Guild. He’s one of the only

chefs in Canada with this level of skill in food and wine pairing.

The evening will commence with a canapé reception and a proprietor-led tour of the vineyards. OLIVER GREAT NEW FALL RELEASES AT ADEGA ESTATE WINERY ON 45TH LESLEY BUXTON Owners Fred Farinha and Alex Nunes are involved in every

aspect of the Adega Estate Winery on 45th, from caring for the vines to working in the barrel room. Adega blends old-world traditions with new-world technology, accompanied by hard work. As autumn approaches, they’ll be busy bottling new fall releases: the fortified Portao (Port), the 2016 Syrah — known for its smoothness and blackcurrant flavour — and the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine with a remarkable pedigree, recognized for its lushness and rich tannins. These new releases will be available in the lower mainland at Save On Foods, several select restaurants and the winery itself. Adega Estate Winery is open seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm until Christmas Day. Malbec and BBQ Adega is celebrated for its red wines, which have a distinctive fruit-forward style. Their 2016 Malbec received acclaim for its uniqueness – there are few in the region that could rival it. Created with only Malbec grapes, it has a distinguishing floral signature with aromas of blueberry, white pepper and sugary candy floss.

This varietal has smooth tannins and is medium bodied with hints of vanilla and a gorgeous caramel finish. Try it with spicy food, or a delicious BBQ steak.

Refreshing Whites Naturally, Adega also has plenty to offer white wine lovers. First there’s the Pinot Gris. This alluring wine is the perfect warm-day accompaniment with its delicious aromatic bouquet of peaches, apricots and apples. This wine is wonderful with salmon or a light salad. The winery’s popular off-dry Riesling is filled with diverse aromas: green apple, mango with a sliver of papaya. This wine has a big finish with a touch of sweetness and a smooth, fresh acidity. Drink it cold when you have nowhere to be and can just linger over it. You won’t want to rush it.
