The Lighthouse
The lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Distress River, was where the captains of the steamships would signal the lockmaster with three blasts of their whistle as they passed. In 1995 the Magnetawan River Heritage Association had a replica built on the original site. The lighthouse can be seen from the Dam trail on the island and the Distress River bridge. 6
AREA ACTIVITIES Birdwatching Birds are beautiful, colourful, and each have unique songs they sing. Our area is rich with species of birds – some which stay all year round and even more that migrate south in winter, but return faithfully every spring! There are over 260 species of birds within a radius of 50 km. Just head out with binoculars and your curiosity, for an adventure in birdwatching. Our extremely diverse geography provides a wide variety of unique habitats for birds and is ideal for naturalists interested in exploration. From the small streams and meadows, to marsh lands and forests, our area offers one-of-a-kind opportunities to see all kinds of bird life with postcard perfect photo opportunities!
Horseback Riding There is nothing that equals the partnership between a horse and rider! It is a great way to get out in nature and see the wild flowers in bloom. Riding is an experience not to be missed and there is no better way to explore the beauty that the Magnetawan area has to offer! Children can enjoy a pony ride and will never forget the experience. Please check the booklet to make your appointment, it could just be the highlight of your vacation!
Nordic Skiing There are two Nordic Ski clubs within a half hour of Magnetawan. Arrowhead Park and the Georgian Nordic Ski Club just a short drive down Hwy 124. Both clubs have kilometers of groomed trails through natural forests and rocky outcroppings. There are circle trails for the novice and the experienced cross-country skier. Downhill skiing and tubing can be found within an hours drive from our area. Winter can be fun in the Magnetawan area!
ATVing Discover the Magnetawan area on an ATV, either on the scenic back roads or off-roading on Crown land trails. The Municipalities of Magnetawan and Whitestone allow ATVs on their municipal roadways. Riding an ATV is an activity that can happen over three seasons. The fall colours are incredible, and ATVing is one of the best ways to see them! 7

Knoepfli Falls This scenic dam and falls is located just off Hwy. 124 a few kilometers west of Magnetawan. The dam was created to raise the water level of Ahmic Lake for the historic steamships heading to Ahmic Harbour. The falls drop 8 meters over 100 meter stretch. In spring there are white water rafters beginning their trips down the Magnetawan River at this impressive falls.
Magnetawan River Magnetawan means “swiflty flowing waters” and true to its name, there are 6 sets of rapids between Knoefli Falls and Maple Island. The Magnetawan River flows 175km from inside Algonguin Park emptying itself into Georgian Bay where it offers white water paddlers numerous places to practice their skills. Some of the best fishing can be found on the river, bass, pike, perch and walleye to name a few. 10

Snowmobiling The Magnetawan area has a reputation for its super snowmobiling conditions and trails. Our area is “one of Ontario’s premiere winter destinations…great snow and the best snowmobiling trails in Ontario’s Near North.” We have hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails boasting a mixed riding experience with scenic tree-lined trails, frozen lakes and breath-taking views of snow-clad hills and valleys. Most importantly our area is blessed with an abundance of snow and is part of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs with connections to 3500 km. of trails. 17

AREA TRAILS The Cornelia Levering Broadmeadows Trail (Golf Course Trail) Length: 3km/1.9mi
From the Village of Magnetawan, take Golf Course Road from Bay Street keeping the Magnetawan River to your left. Just before you each the end, the Broadmeadow trail-head marker will be seen on your right. The trail-head is located at the Ahmic Lake Golf Club and Broadmeadows Wildlife Area in Magnetawan. This trail is not a closed loop but it traverses areas of different forest stands and ecosystem types including hardwood maple, pockets of white pine, and a small tamarack plantation.
Dam Trail Length 1.2km/ ).75mi From the Village of Magnetawan, venture over to the dam and locks. Cross the locks and follow the “Dam Trail” signs around the island. Take in the vistas of waterfalls, granite outcroppings, the old lighthouse on scenic Lake Cecebe and Centennial Park. This trail is adjacent to the museum in the old powerhouse.
Trans Canada Trail
The Trans Canada Trail winds its way through the area: the Seguin Trail from Fern Glen to Seguin Falls and the Old Nipissing Rd. north to Magnetawan and beyond are now part of the Trans Canada Trail. The Old Nipissing Development Rd. (originally built in the 1840’s) is now the main street of the Village of Magnetawan. It originally ran from Rosseau to Nipissing and was the only route by road to the north. Along the road are old cemeteries, abandoned farms and old school houses used in the pioneer days. Many of the original settlers came this way before the railroads were built. Route signs along this road lead from the Sequin Falls to Commanda at Highway 522. The road is a great trail for hiking, biking or ATVing.

A.F.I.A.
The Almaguin Fish Improvement Association (A.F.I.A.)
is comprised of a group of volunteers who are concerned with the health and wellbeing of our lakes and the abundance of fish available to the anglers. For almost 30 years AFIA has captured pickerel, milked the fish of their eggs and hatched the eggs into fry at our hatchery located at the bottom of the locks in Magnetawan. During this period, millions of young pickerel fry have been successfully introduced into Cecebe and Ahmic Lake. AFIA was able to regain the approval of the MNR and in 2011 re-opened the hatchery to stock Cecebe Lake. In 2012, the agreement was revised to include several fish management activities including: counting of fish huts, counting of anglers on the lakes in the summer, fish species counting and tissue sampling for DNA. The DNA samples taken will be studied and will provide scientific data to support the success of our stocking program. Cecebe and Ahmic Lakes will be stocked for 4 years, but there is no guarantee from the MNR that our program will be allowed to continue after 2017. The hatchery may close as early as 2015.

WATER WATER WATER Fishing Fishing is great year round. Walleye, Small Mouth Bass, Pike and pan fish are species you can catch in Ahmic Lake, surrounding lakes and along the Magnetawan River. The Ministry of Natural Resources considers Ahmic Lake to be one of the most well stocked lakes in the Parry Sound District.
Boating Bring your own boat of any size to Magnetawan or rent one from some of the many outfitters. Ahmic Lake is at your doorstep with day trips up the Magnetawan River through the locks in the village of Magnetawan. Cruise up to Burks Falls on Lake Cecebe and the Magnetawan River (fees applicable to pass through the locks) or, just stay on one of the lakes and do some sight-seeing...taking in the beautiful cottages and homes. You may want to try your hand at fishing while you relax on the water. Bring your own toys and enjoy the fun and exciting family sports of tubing, water skiing or wake boarding.
Heritage River Walk The Heritage River Walk is located in the village of Burk’s Falls. It stretches from the racetrack in the arena grounds to the footbridge below the dam. With the Magnetawan River on one side, and lush forest on the other, it is the perfect place for walking, picnicking, and sightseeing.
Kayaking & Canoing You can also explore the waterways by canoe or kayak and listen to the nature or watch the fox and heron, even river otters along the shores. There is the world renown Magnetawan River Canoe Route, plus so many small lakes, streams and rivers to explore. This uncrowded area awaits your paddle! 38
