WorthNoting BOSTON COLLEGE vs. MASSACHUSETTS Boston College and Massachusetts lock up for the 73rd time on Saturday night at Kelley Rink. The Eagles have owned the series for the most part, possessing a 55-13-4 mark against the Minutemen all-time. In recent memory, the Eagles are 5-1-1 against UMass with that lone loss occuring on The Heights Jan. 18, 2013 (2-5). Before back-to-back losses at the Mullins Center in 2011 and 2012, Boston College won 12-straight games against Massachusetts from Feb. 6, 2009 to Oct. 21, 2011. The Eagles are actually in search of their first win against UMass in their third try tonight, having tied (Nov. 15, 2013 - 2-2) and lost (Jan. 18, 2013 - 2-5) in their last two respective outings. MAPPING OUT UMASS UMass picked up its second straight win and first Hockey East victory, defeating Northeastern 3-2 last night at Matthews Arena. Making his second consecutive start in net, freshman Henry Dill made 42 saves. Dill has won both games in his young career. Senior Emerson Auvenshine, skating as a defenseman for the first time in his collegiate career, scored the gamewinning goal in the third period. The tally was Auvenshine’s first career game winner and second career tally overall in 38 career contests. Oleg Yevenko, playing in his 100th career game, dished his second assist in as many contests. He is the lone player on the UMass roster to have reached the century mark in career games played. For a second straight contest, UMass went 1-for-5 on the power play and was a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. The Minutemen currently rank eighth in the nation in PK percentage at 93.8%, having killed of 15 of 16 on the season. The Minutemen offense heads into Saturday’s contest ranked 31st, having scored 2.75 goals per game, but the defense has struggled in its first four outings. The Minutemen rank second to last in college hockey, surrendering 4.50 goals per game. UMass has only committed nine penalty minutes per game, tied for 42nd in the country. Massachusetts is one of six teams, including Boston College, to have won its last two contests. OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT The Eagles have scored six goals in each of their last two outings. The last time Boston College combined for 12 goals in two games was last season when the Eagles defeated Boston University, 6-4, and Maine, 7-2, back-to-back on Jan. 17-18, 2014. Under Jerry York, Boston College has combined for 12 goals or more over the span of two games all but three times in a single season. The only seasons BC has never scored 12 or more goals in back-toback games was 1994-95 (first season), 2003-04 and 2012-13. BOUNCING BACK Boston College has actually lost five of its last eight season opening contests dating back to the 2007-08 season, including last Friday’s 5-2 setback at UMass Lowell. With the Eagles’ 6-2 triumph over RIT, Boston College has now won all five games following a season-opening loss. In those instances, the Eagles have advanced to the NCAA Tournament on three of four occassions and won two national titles (2008 & 2010). COMING BACK TO CONTE Since Jerry York has been the head coach at Boston College, the Eagles possesses a 13-7-1 record in home opening games on The Heights. Dating back to the 2007-08 season, the Eagles are 6-1-1 in the first game of the year at Kelley Rink. HISTORY (STILL) IN THE MAKING The Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, enters his 43rd season of coaching college hockey. Not only is York the winningest coach in the game’s history, having amassed 965 victories and a win loss total of 965-578-102 (.619), York is approaching another historic benchmark at his alma mater. Now in his 21st season as BC bench boss, York is just two victories away from earning his 500th victory as Eagles head coach. York is 498-243-68 (.659) in 20 seasons.

HOCKEY HALL CALL Three members of the Boston College hockey family were enshrined as part of the 2014 Class of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame, including Jeff Farkas ('00), William Hogan (‘33) and Marty Reasoner (‘98). Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. SHUSHING SHUTOUTS Boston College has not been shutout in 101 games. That is the longest active streak in the country. Denver is in second, having scored a goal in 70-consecutive games while Union is in third at 68. BABY BIRD(S) Highly-touted rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. University of Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the second-youngest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player. CHANGING OF THE GUARD Following yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 443-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East. BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICE Not only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th). SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINK Boston College celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 28295-10 (.748).

EagleHallCALL One-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTING BIG TEN BRUSH-UP Fourteen of the country’s most storied college hockey programs will compete this fall in the second Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge. Nine of 12 Hockey East institutions will join five of the six Big Ten schools in 20 designated games to be played between October 10 and November 29, with 10 games scheduled in Hockey East arenas and 10 in Big Ten venues. Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge Cup will be presented to the conference that records the most points from the 20 contests. Teams will earn two points for a win, one point for a tie and a bonus point will be awarded for a road win. EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLL Boston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title.

Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-5214 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

The sport of ice hockey at Boston College - as we know it today - would not exist without the efforts of William M. Hogan. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at BC, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. EagleOffense MOVIN’ ON UP Following the Eagles’ six-goal explosion against RIT on Oct. 18, Boston College’s offense is now tied for fifth in the country, averaging 4.00 goals per game. FITZ ON THE FRITZ Sophomore forward Ryan Fitzgerald is the lone Eagle to have scored consecutive goals in BC’s two outings this season. The North Reading, Mass., has scored goals in straight games four times in his career and with his goal, he tied Destry Straight for the most career goals (15) on the roster. ROOKIE PARTY Freshmen Zach Sanford and Alex Tuch both recorded their first points as Eagles against RIT on Oct. 18. Sanford exploded for a playmaker, registering three assists. Tuch scored early in the third period in front of the hometown crowd, just a few miles from where he grew up.

NEXT NUMBER UP The Boston College offense will look to its young talent to replace the Eagles’ “Big Three” line ofJohnny Gaudreau, Kevin Hayes and Bill Arnold that constituted 43 percent of BC’s production last season. Gaudreau, the program’s first Hobey Baker winner since 2000 and the most prolific output in all of college hockey since the 2002-03 season, left after his junior season while Hayes, Arnold and former captain Patrick Brown all graduated. Those four combined for 92 goals, 136 assists and 228 points, just a shade under half the offensive product from the 2013-14 club.

SILKY SMOOTH Junior Brendan Silk posted his first-career multi-point game with a pair of assists in the victory against RIT on Oct. 18. That contest marked the junior’s 75thcareer game. CASH CAM Cam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s gamewinning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. it marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since his sophomore season after scoring a goal against Vermont on March 15, 2013. HEAVY LIES THE CROWN Boston College lit the lamp the most times in college hockey in 2013-14. The Eagles tallied an NCAAbest 164 goals. BC was the only team in the country to average over four goals per game (4.10 gpg). Not only could BC boast the highest scoring clip, but the Eagles also recorded the top scoring margin in the country, beating opposing teams by a margin of 1.75 goals per game.

EagleDefense DEFENSIVE DOLDRUMS Boston College is 1-1 on the season, but still surrendering 3.50 goals per game. That mark is tied for 39th in the NCAA and is ninth in Hockey East.

CONNECTING THE DOHTS Junior defenseman Teddy Doherty earned Boston College’s first Hockey East award of the season after landing Defensive Player of the Week honors. Doherty not only accounted for his second-career three-point performance with a goal and two assists, he also notched his first-career game-winning goal and was a game-high +4. Doherty was also recognized as BC’s Male Eagle of the Week his exploits. Doherty is now Boston College’s leading scorer through the first two games this season (1-3-4).

AGE IS NOTHING BUT A NUMBER Freshman defenseman Noah Hanifin, the second-youngest player in college hockey, is currently projected as the thirdoverall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

POWER PLAY PLAUDITS Sophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights. LAST LINE OF DEFENSE After getting drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft, Thatcher Demko returns as the mainstay in net for the Eagles. As a freshman, the San Diego, Calif., native turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. Not only did the 6-foot-4 goaltender go 9-1-1 in Hockey East last season, his 1.35 goals against average in conference action was also the lowest goals against average mark since Jimmy Howard’s (Maine) record of 1.15 in 2003-04. Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees. Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 456 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (455) and North Dakota (448) trail by a slim margin.

The Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach JERRY YORK

43rd year coaching /// 21st at Boston College Phil ’82 and Kim Schiller have long loved Boston College Hockey. In 2012, they chose to endow the head men’s ice hockey coach position, currently held by Jerry York. The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.

• Enters his 43rd season as a head coach; spent seven years (1972-79) at Clarkson and 15 years (1979-94) at Bowling Green • Is college hockey’s winningest coach of all-time with 965 career victories • Earned his 925th career victory with a 5-2 win over AlabamaHunstville on Dec. 29, 2012, in Minneapolis, Minn., surpassing Ron Mason to become the winningest coach in the history of college hockey • Is one of only three coaches in NCAA history to lead two different schools to national titles; led Bowling Green to the 1984 NCAA title, and Boston College to the 2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012 NCAA titles • Had his Boston College jersey retired on April 12, 2010, during the program’s national championship celebration on O’Neill plaza • Was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy, presented for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, in October 2010
