WorthNoting BOSTON COLLEGE vs. PROVIDENCE Boston College returns to Schneider Arena where the Eagles last met Providence. BC shutout the Friars, 2-0, marking the fourth shutout in the last 10 meetings against PC. Boston College has owned the majority of the Providence series in recent history, constructing a 171-3 mark over the course of the last 21 meetings. The Eagles have no lost against Providence at Schneider Arena since Oct. 31, 2006, when PC scored with 1:46 left in regulation to break a 3-3 tie. In all, Boston College holds a 109-46-13 mark against Providence with a 57-21-11 mark in Hockey East play. PC coach Nate Leamn has only won one game against the Eagles with a 1-7-1 mark in nine encounters while Friars’ goaltender Jon Gillies is 1-3-1 against BC with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. FOCUSING ON THE FRIARS Providence is 5-2-0 in the month of November, with Trevor Mingoia leading the team in scoring over those seven games (7 GP, 4-4-8), followed by Shane Luke (7 GP, 3-3-6). The Friars are 4-for-35 on the power play this month (11.4%) and 29-for-32 on the penalty kill (90.6%). The team’s goals-against average is 0.86 for the month, while Jon Gillies has a 4-2-0 mark to go with a 1.01 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage. The Friars posted a shutout for the second consecutive game with a 1-0 win over New Hampshire on Nov. 22. Trevor Mingoia tallied the first goal of the game at 9:23 of the first period when he netted the eventual winner. Mingoia leads the Friars with five goals and six assists and is tied for second in the nation with three game-winning goals. Gillies’ .932 save percentage and 2.05 goals against average are tied for 14th and 21st in the country, respectively. Gillies anchors te 13th-ranked offense, giving up only 2.00 goals per game but is not getting much help up front. Providence’s offense is ranked 49th in college hockey, scoring at a clip of 1.92 goals per game. The power play has struggled, finding the back of the net only five times in 60 chances for a conversion rate of 8.3 percent. That mark is tied for 55th in the NCAA. BATTLING THE BIG TEN Before Friday’s game, Boston College battled the Big Ten Conference six times as an official league. The addition of Penn State in 2013-14 gave the Big Ten a six-team league and an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Eagles posted a 3-2-1 mark against Big Ten foes, including an 0-1-1 mark against Minnesota, 2-0 total against Penn State, 1-0 mark against Wisconsin and an 0-1 mark against Michigan. Amongst the Big Ten as a whole in BC history, the Eagles are 44-55-5 (.447) against the conference. FIVE (hundred) ALIVE Jerry York won his 500th game behind the Eagles’ bench in only 811 games after a 2-1 victory at Denver on Oct. 31, 2014. SAME AS SNOOKS Boston College head coach Jerry York matched legendary skipper, John ‘Snooks’ Kelley (1932-42 & 1946-72), as the winningest coach in program history after the victory at Michigan State on Nov. 14. In all, Kelley coached for 36 years and had York under his wing as a player. Kelley’s overall mark at BC was 501-244-15 (.670). York, in his 21st season as head coach at BC, is 501-247-68 (.656). A win against Massachusetts will give him the all-time wins record as an Eagle head coach. FIVE (hundred) ALIVE Jerry York won his 500th game behind the Eagles’ bench in only 811 games after a 2-1 victory at Denver on Oct. 31, 2014. REACHING NEW “HEIGHTS” On. Nov. 21, 2014, at Massachusetts, the Eagles secured a 5-3 victory to make Jerry York the winningest coach in Boston College hockey history. Heading into thes contest, York was even with his former coach John “Snooks” Kelley at 501 total victories. Following the 5-3 decision, York holds the claim as both the winningest coach at his alma mater (503-244-15) and in college hockey history (970-582-102). POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNT Scoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College has scored at least one goal or more in five of its seven victories thus far. Conversely, the Eagles are 2-5 when denied a power play goal. In all, Boston College has converted six of its 54 chances at a rate of 11.1 percent which ranks 43rd in the country right now. TOUGH THROUGH TWO Boston College has proved how important it is to get out ahead early. The Eagles are 6-1-0 with a lead after two periods of regulation, yet have not come back to win a game while facing a deficit through 40 minutes of regulation. The Eagles are 0-3-0 when down after two periods of play. REMEMBER THE LAST TIME BC LOST FOUR GAMES? The last time Boston College lost four consecutive games, you would have to look back to the 2003-04 season when the Eagles lost to UNH (3-2 - Feb. 28), Maine (3-0 and 3-4, March 5-6) and BU (3-2, March 11). That season, the Eagles went on to compete in the 2004 Frozen Four, in Boston, eventually falling to Maine in the national semifinal, 2-1, on April 8, 2004. BC snapped its recent four-game slide in a 3-2 triumph at Michigan State on Nov. 14. SHUTOUT STREAK STOPPED UP BC was shutout at Connecticut on Nov. 5 in the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and the Huskies. The Eagles owned the longest streak in the country of scoring at least one goal in 106 games with their last shutout transpiring on Jan. 13, 2012, at UMass. In 813 games behind Boston College’s bench, Jerry York has been held scoreless only 20 times total. OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT The Eagles scored six goals in back-to-back games on Oct. 18 and Oct. 24 against RIT and Colorado College, in that order. The last time Boston College combined for 12 goals in two games was last season when the Eagles defeated Boston University, 6-4, and Maine, 7-2, back-to-back on Jan. 17-18, 2014. Under Jerry York, Boston College has combined for 12 goals or more over the span of two games all but three times in a single season. The only seasons BC has never scored 12 or more goals in back-to-back games was 1994-95 (first season), 2003-04 and 2012-13. BABY BIRD(S) Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the secondyoungest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

WERESTILLNOTING BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICE Not only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th). CHANGING OF THE GUARD Following yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 444-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East. SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINK BC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).
Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-5214 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.
#TEAMDREWBROWN Hockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. For those that would like to help donate to Brown’s cause, the fundraising campaign is called “Dropping Mitts Against Cancer”. More information is located here: gofundme.com/93da50
