WorthNoting #THEBATTLEOFCOMMAVE Boston University will hop on the Green Line Friday night as the Terriers make their way to Kelley Rink in what will be the 266th installment of Boston College vs. Boston University on the ice. Following last season, Boston College usurped the Terriers as the winningest team of all time in the Hockey East Association’s 30-year history. Last season, the Eagles swept the three-game series over BU, including the first round of the Beanpot Tournament.

The last time Boston College won every meeting against BU in the regular season occurred in the 2010-11 season when BC went 4-0 over BU. In recent history, Boston College has dominated its foe from Comm. Ave, winning 12 of the last 16 meetings dating back to the 2010 Beanpot title game on Feb. 8. Head coach Jerry York is 3-0 against his new adversary from Allston, David Quinn. Prior to Quinn’s arrival, the Eagles faced off against famed coach Jack Parker 155 times dating back to 1973, including 82 meetings against York. In all, York is 40-38-7 against Boston University as head coach of the Eagles.

RHETT REPORT Following one of its toughest seasons in program history, No. 5 Boston University has turned things around in a hurry, and started off the season with an unblemished 4-0 mark before suffering a 2-1 loss at home to No. 8 Providence on Oct. 31. The Terriers’ four-game tear to ignite the 2014-15 season marked BU’s best start since the 2001-02 season. The Friars’ victory stopped up Boston University’s bid at its best start since the 1991 season (5-0-0). The talk around town has been freshman phenom Jack Eichel. The Chelmsford, Mass., native is averaging nearly two points per game, having tallied four goals and five assists in (1.80 ppg) in five outings. Eichel is the country’s leading rookie scorer by a long shot, nearly half a point better than the closest first-year skater. Junior Danny O’Regan has had a strong first start and is the nation’s 12th-most prolific scorer, averaging 1.40 points per game with three goals and four assists while Evan Rodrigues (1-5-6) is tied for 21st, averaging 1.20 points per game. With all that firepower up front, the Terriers’ defense through this point in this season may be its strongest suit. Boston University has the second-ranked defense in the country, giving up only six total goals in five games, averaging 1.20 goals surrendered per game. Matt O’Connor shoulders much of the credit as both his goals against average (1.26) and save percentage (.964) ranks fourth in the nation and tops in Hockey East. BU sports the top combined special teams percentage at 63.9 percent (23/36) and is outscoring its opponents at a clip of 2.20 goals per game, third best in the NCAA. The power play is tied for 23rd at a conversion rate of 16.7 percent (2-for-12) while the penalty kill is tied for 20th with (87.5 percent).

YOUNG GUNS Friday’s rivalry will not only have the attention of the college hockey world, but the professional ranks as well. As of the latest ISS Prospect Rankings for the 2015 NHL Draft released on Nov. 3, Boston University’s Jack Eichel and Boston College’s Noah Hanifin are predicted to be selected second and third, respectively, at this year’s NHL Entry Draft in Sunrise, Fla. Hanifin is projected as the top overall defenseman in this year’s draft class.

ANOTHER SEASON…ANOTHER BENCHMARK The Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, won his 500th game behind the Eagles’ bench in only 811 games after a 2-1 victory at Denver on Oct. 31, 2014.

York is in his 21st season as BC bench boss. York continues to maintain the label as college hockey’s winninges coach all-time, possessing a 967-579-102 mark in his 43rd season as a college hockey head coach.

SNEAKING UP ON SNOOKS John “Snooks” Kelley, Boston College head coach for 36 years from 1932 to 1942 and 1946 to 1972, owns the most wins as Eagles’ head with coach with an overall record of 501-244-15. If the Eagles defeat Boston University, York ties Kelley for the most wins ever at BC. To date, York’s mark on The Heights is 500-245-68.

REMEMBER THE LAST TIME BC LOST TWO GAMES? The last time Boston College lost back-to-back games was last season on Nov. 23 and Nov. 29 against Maine (5-1) and Holy Cross (5-4), respectively. Following that skid, the Eagles rattled off a 19-game unbeaten streak of 17-0-2, matching the longest of that kind under Jerry York at Boston College.

SHUTOUT STREAK STOPPED UP Boston College was shutout at Connecticut on Nov. 5 in the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and the Huskies. The Eagles owned the longest streak in the country of scoring at least one goal in 106 games with their last shutout transpiring on Jan. 13, 2012, at Massachusetts.

In 813 games behind Boston College’s bench, Jerry York has been held scoreless only 20 times total.

OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT The Eagles scored six goals in back-to-back games on Oct. 18 and Oct. 24 against RIT and Colorado College, in that order. The last time Boston College combined for 12 goals in two games was last season when the Eagles defeated Boston University, 6-4, and Maine, 7-2, back-to-back on Jan. 17-18, 2014. Under Jerry York, Boston College has combined for 12 goals or more over the span of two games all but three times in a single season. The only seasons BC has never scored 12 or more goals in back-to-back games was 1994-95 (first season), 2003-04 and 2012-13.

HOCKEY HALL CALL Three members of the Boston College hockey family were enshrined as part of the 2014 Class of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame, including Jeff Farkas ('00), William Hogan (‘33) and Marty Reasoner (‘98). Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998.

BABY BIRD(S) Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin is not just the second-youngest player in all of college hockey, he is the second-youngest player EVER to don the maroon and gold. The Norwood, Mass., native will not turn 18 years old until Jan. 25, 2015. Michigan’s Zach Werenski (DOB: July 19, 1997) is college hockey’s youngest player. Boston College, as a whole, is the secondyoungest club in college hockey behind Boston University. Last season, BC goaltender Thatcher Demko owned the distinction of being college hockey’s youngest player.

BOUNCING BACK Boston College has actually lost five of its last eight season opening contests dating back to the 2007-08 season, including the 5-2 setback at UMass Lowell on Oct. 10. With the Eagles’ 6-2 triumph over RIT, Boston College has now won all five games following a seasonopening loss. In those instances, the Eagles have advanced to the NCAA Tournament on three of four occassions and won two national titles (2008 & 2010).

EagleHallCALL One-third of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame - Class of 2014 - was made up from the men’s ice hockey contingent. These three Eagles were enshrined into the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 17, and were recognized at halftime of the Eagles’ football game against Clemson.

WERESTILLNOTING BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICE Not only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

CHANGING OF THE GUARD Following yet another 25-win year, fourth in the last five seasons for Boston College, the Eagles leapfrogged Boston University in all-time win percentage in Hockey East play. In 30 seasons, the Eagles have compiled a 444-248-73 record for a league-best 62.8 win percentage in 30 seasons as a found member of Hockey East.

SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINK BC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 288-111-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748).

Jeff Farkas played four years on the Eagles’ hockey team. In 2000, Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist, and received the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award given by the Pike’s Peak Hockey Club to the team’s MVP. During his incredible career, the Eagles finished with an exemplary 99-5214 record with two Hockey East Championships and three Frozen Four appearances.

EagleOffense WHERE THE OFFENSE STANDS Through seven games, Boston College is averaging three goals per game, tied for 19th with eight other clubs to this point. That mark ranks fifth best in Hockey East.

FITZ ‘N’ GLAMOUR Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald had scored 16 career goals as an Eagle before the Oct. 31 game at Denver. The North Reading, Mass., native had never scored a pair in a game until that night, not only scoring his second power play tally of the season, but his second game-winning goal of the year. Fitzgerald is tied for 13th in goal scoring in all of college hockey and is tied for fourth with a pair of game-winning goals.

POWER HOUR Ryan Fitzgerald and Adam Gilmour have both netted two power play goals on the season and are currently tied for eighth in the country in that category. That mark is also tied for tops in Hockey East. Gilmour is also the first player to score a pair of power play goals in a game for Boston College since Patrick Brown scored a pair against Maine on Jan. 18, 2014.

FRESH FROSH Newcomers Alex Tuch and Zach Sanford are currently tied for fifth in scoring in Hockey East. Tuch has notched two goals and three assists, including back-to-back multi-point games on Oct. 24-25. Sanford has doled out five assists and is currently tied for third in all of Hockey East in that category.

FIVE-ON-THREE FLURRY Sophomore Adam Gilmour tallied a pair of 5-on-3 goals against Massachusetts on Oct. 25 with help from the same two defensemen in Noah Hanifin and Michael Matheson. A few seasons have come and gone since the Eagles scored two 5-on-3 power play goals in one game. The last time Boston College turned the trick was on Nov. 27, 2009, against Clarkson when Paul Carey and Carl Sneep’s game-winning goal both came with a two-skater advantage.

GIMMIE MOUR GILMOUR Following his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s secondconsecutive Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner against the Minutemen.

The opening night against Colorado College, Gilmour doled out a pair of assists for a five-point weekend.

Gilmour now has a pair of two-goal games under his belt his first occurring against Boston University on Jan. 17, 2014. Saturday’s three-point performance also stands as the fourth of his career. EagleOffense QUINN CAN Quinn Smith was riding a four-game point streak from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1, one shy of a career best. The senior assistant captain has recorded assists in his last two outings before notching his second-career goal scoring streak from Oct. 25-31. Smith’s first two-game goal scoring streak took place from Feb. 1-4, 2013.

STRAIGHT UP Destry Straight provided the Eagles’ lone goal in BC’s 2-1 overtime loss at Denver on Oct. 31. The West Vancouver, B.C., native is second on the team in career goals scored with 16.

ROOKIE PARTY Freshmen Zach Sanford and Alex Tuch both recorded their first points as Eagles against RIT on Oct. 18. Sanford exploded for a playmaker, registering three assists. Tuch scored early in the third period in front of the hometown crowd, just a few miles from where he grew up. Hanifin’s first career point was a goal against Colorado College and he followed that with a two-assist performance against UMass on Oct. 25.

COUNT ON CAL Sophomore forward Chris Calnan scored BC’s first goal of the season, upping his career total to five in 39 games played.

NEXT NUMBER UP The Boston College offense will look to its young talent to replace the Eagles’ “Big Three” line ofJohnny Gaudreau, Kevin Hayes and Bill Arnold that constituted 43 percent of BC’s production last season. Gaudreau, the program’s first Hobey Baker winner since 2000 and the most prolific output in all of college hockey since the 2002-03 season, left after his junior season while Hayes, Arnold and former captain Patrick Brown all graduated. Those four combined for 92 goals, 136 assists and 228 points, just a shade under half the offensive product from the 2013-14 club.

SILKY SMOOTH Junior Brendan Silk posted his first-career multi-point game with a pair of assists in the victory against RIT on Oct. 18. That contest marked the junior’s 75thcareer game.

CASH CAM Cam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. it marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct.

24, Spiro scored his firstcareer two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012.

EagleDefense DEFENSIVE POSITIONING Boston College’s offense has been clicking but the defense has shown marked improvement from its opening night.

The Eagles’ defensive corps is tied for 11th in the country, surrendering 2.00 goals game. That mark is tied for third in Hockey East.

BLUE-LINE BOPPERS The Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 18 goals on the season with five coming from the twigs of the blue liners.

In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen).

MATHESON HITS 50 Junior captain Michael Matheson turned in his third-career playmaker (three assists) in the win against UMass on Oct. 25 with his last one taking place against Providence on Jan. 10, 2014. On his last assist, Matheson recorded his 50th-career point in his 78th game donning the maroon and gold.

POWER PLAY PLAUDITS Sophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights.

SANTINI TO MISS REMAINDER OF FIRST HALF Steve SantinI will miss the remainder of the first half of the season following scheduled wrist surgery on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 28, 2014. The 6-foot-2 blue liner has skated in every game for Boston College save two games in December last season when he was representing the United States at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden.

Santini suffered the injury in the middle of the second period against Massachusetts on Oct. 25. The New Jersey Devils prospect scored his first goal of the year at RIT on Oct. 18. In 39 games at defense, Santini has logged four goals and eight assists with a +27 rating.

HANGIN’ WITH HANIFIN Newcomer Noah Hanifin scored his first-career goal as an Eagle against Colorado College and followed that with his firstcareer mutli-point game with both assists on Adam Gilmour’s 5-on-3 tallies against UMass.

CONNECTING THE DOHTS Junior defenseman Teddy Doherty earned Boston College’s first Hockey East award of the season after landing Defensive Player of the Week honors. Doherty not only accounted for his second-career threepoint performance with a goal and two assists, he also notched his firstcareer game-winning goal and was a gamehigh +4. Doherty was also recognized as BC’s Male Eagle of the Week his exploits. Doherty is tied for fifth amongst all defensemen in scoring with 1.25 points per game (1-4-5).

EagleDefense LAST LINE OF DEFENSE Sophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko won four of his last five games, surrendering only seven goals in his last six outings. The San Diego native currently ranks 15th in the NCAA with a 1.85 goals against average and 22nd with a .932 save percentage. Demko’s winning percentage has risen to .571, good for 30th in the country. Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. Not only did the 6-foot-4 goaltender go 9-1-1 in Hockey East last season, his 1.35 goals against average in conference action was also the lowest goals against average mark since Jimmy Howard’s (Maine) record of 1.15 in 2003-04. A member of the Hockey East All-Rookie Team, Demko captured the 2014 Eberly Award (goaltender with the best save percentage in the Beanpot) with a save rate of .966, marking the second-best save percentage in Beanpot Tournament history.

AGE IS NOTHING BUT A NUMBER Freshman defenseman Noah Hanifin, the second-youngest player in college hockey, is currently projected as the thirdoverall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

COLD-BLOODED (PENALTY) KILLERS In 2013-14, the Eagles’ penalty-killing unit eked out Quinnipiac by one-tenth of a percentage point for college hockey’s top penalty-killing corps. The Eagles denied opposing teams at a rate of 89.9 percent (152-for-169). Currently, Boston College is tied with Michigan as the 27th-ranked penalty-killing unit in the country. BC has stopped 15-of-18 chances at a rate of 83.3 percent.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished

by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Defensemen Ian McCoshen and Steve Santini alongside goaltender Thatcher Demko were members of the 2014 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. NCAA Tournament victories in the last 17 years. That win total is 18 victories more than Michigan, which has totaled 20 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 458 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (455) and North Dakota (448) trail by a slim margin.

The Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach JERRY YORK

43rd year coaching /// 21st at Boston College Phil ’82 and Kim Schiller have long loved Boston College Hockey. In 2012, they chose to endow the head men’s ice hockey coach position, currently held by Jerry York. The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program. In recognition of Jerry’s accomplishments and to ensure that the future of BC remains strong for years to come, the Schillers decided to permanently etch their legacy with BC Hockey.
