WorthNoting RECAPPING FRIDAY’S SHUTOUT Thatcher Demko’s 35-save shutout performance helped No. 9 Boston College clinch a first-round bye and home ice for the 2015 Hockey East playoffs as the Eagles subdued Notre Dame, 2-0, Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena. Ian McCoshen and Alex Tuch continued to light up the scoring sheet as both Eagles scored in Friday’s victory. Austin Cangelosi, Adam Gilmour, Scott Savage and Destry Straight all provided the help in BC’s offense. Demko’s 35-save shutout marks his third-career shutout and first of the season as Boston College and Notre Dame matched one another’s shot totals at 35. Demko’s adversary, rookie Cal Petersen, stopped 33-of-35 shots for the Fighting Irish. The Eagles’ penalty-killing unit stopped all three Irish power play opportunities while Boston College could not convert on its three chances. NOTES FROM FRIDAY NIGHT - Boston College’s last shutout took place at home against UMass Lowell on Feb. 11, 2014 in a 3-0 victory. The Eagles’ last shutout on the road occurred after Thatcher Demko stopped 30 shots at Providence on Jan. 31, 2014 - Thatcher Demko pitched his first shutout of the season and third of his career. Demko’s first two shutouts occurred against UMass Lowell on Feb. 11, 2014 (3-0) and at Providence on Jan. 31, 2014 (2-0). - Defenseman Ian McCoshen is riding a career-best four-game point streak and is the Eagles’ leading scorer in the last four games. The Faribault, Minn., native has scored a goal in three of his last four outings and total four markers across that stretch. Over the course of the last four games, McCoshen has accounted for six points (4-2-6). McCoshen accounted for the gamewinning goal in tonight’s game, marking his second of the season and third of his career. - Freshman Alex Tuch, the Eagles’ leading point scorer with 28 points (14-14-28) is riding a sixgame point streak, tied for most on the team. Adam Gilmour posted a six-game point streak from Dec. 13 to Jan. 16. Over that stretch, Tuch has notched six goals and three assists (6-3-9), including two power play goals. - Friday’s victory marked the first time the Eagles have ever swept Notre Dame.

TROPHY TIME Boston College can still win a share of the Hockey East regular season title if the Eagles sweep Notre Dame with a win tonight and Northeastern completes its weekend sweep of Boston University. The Eagles are two points behind the Terriers with one game left to play and split their season series with a win each. Playoff seeding will come down to victories against the third-place team. If that is also tied, wins against the fourth-place team and so on, and so forth, would determine who gets the No. 1 seed in the Hockey East playoffs. ALL WE DO IS WIN – WIN - WIN With a 20-10-3 mark heading into the regular season finale, the Eagles mathematically have locked up another winning season. In its 93 season of varsity hockey, BC had totaled 74 winning seasons for a winning percentage of 80 percent. It’s the 18th-straight winning season under Jerry York. With the Feb. 27th victory at Notre Dame, the Eagles have won 20 games in sixconsecutive seasons, tying Jerry York’s streak of six-straight 20-win seasons starting in 2002-03 and concluding in 2007-08. Under York’s guidance, the Eagles have already posted 20 wins on 15 occassions. One more win would match York’s FRISKY FROSH All three Boston College freshmen have achieved the 20-point plateau. This marks the secondstraight year three rookies have hit the 20-point mark as Ryan Fitgerald (29), Austin Cangelosi (26) and Adam Gilmour (20) turned the trick last season. This year, Alex Tuch (14-14-27), Zach Sanford (5-16-21) and Noah Hanifin (4-16-20) are looking to add more before season’s end.

NO LUCK FOR THE IRISH Before Thatcher Demko’s 35-save shutout on Feb. 27 at Notre Dame, Boston College’s last shutout took place at home against UMass Lowell on Feb. 11, 2014 in a 3-0 victory. The Eagles’ last shutout on the road occurred after Thatcher Demko stopped 30 shots at Providence on Jan. 31, 2014. Demko now has three-career blankings, while the Feb. 27 performance was his first of the season. OVERTIME OH YEAH! Ryan Fitzgerald’s overtime game-winning goal against Harvard on Feb. 23 marked the first OT victory for BC in six tries. The last time BC won a game in overtime was Adam Gilmour’s walk-off goal at Northeastern on Nov. 2, 2013. The last time the Eagles won an overtime game at home was on Feb. 26, 2010, against UMass. FITZY ON THE SPOT Ryan Fitzgerald’s overtime winner counts as his fifth game-winning marker of the season. That figure is tied with UConn’s Spencer Naas for best in Hockey East and sixth most in the NCAA. SENIOR SCHWANN SONG The senior class of Brad Barone, Brian Billett, Danny Linell, Michael Sit, Quinn Smith, Cam Spiro and Destry Straight played in their last regular season game as Eagles at Kelley Rink on Friday night. This group enters the Notre Dame series with 103 victories, including one NCAA championship (2012), two Hockey East regular season titles, one Hockey East Tournament championship and three Beanpot trophies. These Eagles have never won less than 22 games in a season. This senior class has seen the most victories of any other class in all of college hockey. GOLDEN EAGLES Both Teddy Doherty and Ryan Fitzgerald both met the 50-point plateau for their careers on Saturday, Feb. 14, against Vermont. Doherty now has nine goals and 43 helpers for 52 points in 98 career games played while Fitzgerald hit the benchmark (27-24-51) in his 70th-career game. PARSING THE PAIRWISE Heading into the Irish series, BC is ninth in the Pairwise ranking, possessing an RPI of .6515. The only team the Eagles trail in the Pairwise rankings right now is Boston University, which is in seventh. POINT - COUNTERPOINT Boston College has now had a freshman score 25 points or more in a season for the last four seasons. Including Alex Tuch’s 26 points this year, Ryan Fitzgerald and Austin Cangelosi recorded 29 and 26 points last season, respectively. Michael Matheson reached 25 points in 2012-13. Johnny Gaudreau turned in 44 points as a rookie in 2011-12. HATS OFF FOR FITZY Ryan Fitzgerald scored Boston College’s first hat trick of the season and within that trifecta had two power play goals and the game-winner against UConn on Jan. 24. He became the first Eagle to record a hat trick since Johnny Gaudreau turned the trick against Denver on March 29, 2014. Fitzgerald became the 38th skater in college hockey to record a hat trick this season. Alaska Anchorage’s Bret Cameron and Northeastern’s Kevin Roy each scored four goals in a game this year.

WERESTILLNOTING HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT Shots on goal has had a significant impact on the Eagles’ results this season. When BC limits its opponents to 20-29 shots, the Eagles are 11-5-1. When allowing 30 or more, Boston College is 7-5-2. When BC takes 30 or more shots, Boston College is 12-3-2. BEAK STREAK After a bit of an uneasy start (4-5-0), BC had rattled off the nation’s longest unbeaten streak that spanned from Dec. 5, 2014, to Jan. 16, 2015. Over the course of that time, the Eagles recorded a 6-0-2 mark in their unbeaten string of eight games. The Eagles’ unbeaten string started on Dec. 5 with a 2-2 draw at UNH and concluded after losing at Maine on Jan. 18. POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNT Scoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College is a nearly unblemished 13-1-1 when scoring at least one power play goal. When denied a power play goal, the Eagles are 7-9-2. A GRAND OL’ TIME Jerry York’s countdown to 1,000-career victories is officially on. York reached his 983rdcareer triumph at Notre Dame on Feb. 27 and now has 17 wins left to reach 1,000. TAG, YOU’RE IT When Boston College scores first, the Eagles have mounted a 15-2-2 record. GILMOUR ARENA Adam Gilmour’s two-career goals at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena have proved to be timely. The Hanover, Mass., native’s first goal at Matthews Arena took place in the form of the overtime winner on Nov. 2, 2013. In his trip to Huntington Ave. on Jan. 9, 2015, Gilmour scored the game-tying goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation to force a draw. AMERICAN EAGLES Thatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Alex Tuch and Miles Wood (incoming in ‘15’16) represent Boston College as five of 23 skaters for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team roster as announced by USA Hockey on the night of Dec. 25. Team USA was dealt an early exit following a loss to Russia in the quarterfinals, but Tuch accounted for a goal and an assist while Hanifin logged a pair of assists over the course of the 2015 World Junior Tournament. BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICE Not only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th). HOCKEY HALL CALL Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINK BC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 289-197-33 (.705). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748). EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLL Boston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title. #TEAMDREWBROWN Hockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. #JohnnyHockey Calgary Flames rookie and former Boston College Hobey Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 23-25 for the NHL All-Star Weekend. Gaudreau has 13 goals and 32 points in 42 games this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who will participate NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24. As of Jan. 23, Gaudreau replaced an injured Sidney Crosby and played in the NHL AllStar Game on Jan. 25 in Columbus. Gaudreau registered a pair of assists.

CAN’T TUCH THIS Alex Tuch earned BC’s third Hockey East award of the season, earning Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 16. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native scored a goal with 9.6 seconds left to force overtime against Vermont on Feb. 13 before scoring the game-winner in BC’s 6-5 win on Feb. 14. Tuch leads the Eagles in points, having logged 13 goals and 14 assists. On the national landscape, Tuch is seventh amongst all rookies in college hockey with 0.87 points per game and is the fourth highest-scoring freshman in Hockey East. FITZ-HERALDED Not only did Ryan Fitzgerald score BC’s first hat trick of the season on Jan. 24 and first since Johnny Gaudreau’s on March 29, 2014, he became the second skater to log a pair of power play goals in a game (Adam Gilmour - Oct. 25). Fitzgerald scored all three goals in BC’s 3-2 win over UConn and posted his fourth game-winning tally of the season. He leads the Eagles with 14 goals. He also accounted for the overtime winner over Harvard in the Beanpot on Feb. 23 after scoring his second short-handed goal of the season against NU in the Beanpot on Feb. 3. Fitzgerald notched his 50th-career point in his 70th-career outing on Feb. 14.

CANGE UNCAGED Austin Cangelosi scored a power play goal in both games against Vermont on Feb. 13-14 an to record power play goals in consecutive games. Adam Gilmour scored power play goals on Jan. 2-3. Cangelosi strung together his first-career three-game goal scoring streak starting on Feb. 6. HAPPY GILMOUR Adam Gilmour’s career best six-game point streak game to a close on Jan. 18 at Maine, but strung together four goals and four assists over the course of Dec. 13 to Jan. 16. Gilmour leads BC with five power goals on the season. Gilmour is currently tied for 29th in the nation in that category and tied for seventh in Hockey East. Gilmour also leads BC with the most multi-point performances this season with eight. QUINN CAN Quinn Smith notched his second-career two-goal performance with a pair against Michigan on Dec. 13. Smith also curbed a 12-game goal scoring against UVM on Feb. 14.

GAUDREAU 2.0 Sophomore Matthew Gaudreau netted the game-tying goal on Feb. 23 against Harvard in the Benapot, marking of his three tallies this season. The Carneys Point, N.J., native also scored in backto-back games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, marking his first-career point streak. Gaudreau has played in 34 career games and netted his first-career goal against Army on Nov. 10. EagleOffense CAL ON ME Chris Calnan has registered three two-goal performances in 11 games. His most recent two-goal performance took place on Jan. 10 against Northeastern when he scored the game-winner in short-handed fashion. In every two-goal performance this season, Calnan has secured the gamewinning goal. Calnan native is tied for 95th in goals per game (0.35). GAME-WINNING GUSTO Ryan Fitzgerald is one of two skaters in Hockey East (Spencer Naas - UConn) with five game-winning goals. Fitzgerald is tied with four others for sixth most game-winning goals in college hockey. COMIN’ STRAIGHT AT YA Destry Straight became the first active Eagle on the 2014-15 roster to score a goal in the Beanpot Tournament on Feb. 3 against Northeastern.

CASH CAM Cam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. It marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct. 24, Spiro scored his firstcareer two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012. SANFORD SENDS ‘EM OFF Zach Sanford is the tied as the fourth-leading scorer for the Eagles and recorded his first-career game-winning goal against Providence on Jan. 30. He also recorded an assist for his third-career multi-point performance. Sanford is currently 23rd in points per game (0.66) amidst all first-year skaters in college hockey.

SIT ‘EM DOWN Senior assistant captain Michael Sit scored his first goal the season at Maine on Jan. 18. He owns six goals for his career. GIMMIE MOUR GILMOUR Following his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s secondconsecutive Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner against the Minutemen. The opening night against Colorado College, Gilmour doled out a pair of assists for a five-point weekend. Gilmour now has a pair of two-goal games under his belt his first occurring against Boston University on Jan. 17, 2014.

EagleDefense DEFENSIVE POSITIONING BC’s defense is currently tied for 16th, surrendering 2.33 goals per game. That mark ranks fifth in Hockey East. BLUE-LINE BOPPERS The Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 97 goals on the season with 18 coming from the twigs of the blue liners. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen). Three of BC’s top seven scorers are defensemen (Teddy Doherty, Noah Hanifin and Michael Matheson). McDOUBLE Sophomore defensemen Ian McCoshen has been on fire as of late, accounting for five points (3-2-5) over the course of his last three games. The Faribault, Minn., native scored his first-career two-goal game against Vermont on Feb. 14 and followed that with his third power play goal of the season and game-tying tally against Lowell on Feb. 20. HANIFIN HYPE Newcomer Noah Hanifin tallied his fifth multipoint performance of the season on Feb. 20 (0-2-2) and secured an assist in his four-straight outings from Feb 6-20.. Hanifin scored his first-career goal against Colorado College and followed that with his first-career mutli-point game with both assists on Adam Gilmour’s 5-on3 tallies against UMass. EagleDefense MATHESON MAKES IT 100 Captain Michael Matheson turned in his third-career playmaker (three assists) in the win against UMass on Oct. 25 with his last one taking place against Providence on Jan. 10, 2014. In his 100th-career game on Jan. 30, the Canadian captain logged his 50th-career assist. POWER PLAY PLAUDITS Ian McCoshen not only scored the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame against RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights. McCoshen has also doled out 10 assists thus far. LAST LINE OF DEFENSE Sophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko just started his 50th-career game on The Heights on Feb. 13, 2015. This season, Demko is 17-9-3 and currently ranks 28th in the NCAA in goals against average with a mark of 2.23. Demko’s save percentage of .924 is good for 23rd in college hockey. Demko’s winning percentage of .638 has him tied for 16th in the country. Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

DEMKO DOLING IT OUT Thathcher Demko recorded his fifth-career assist and first since the season opener at UMass Lowell on Oct. 10. Demko’s helper came on Austin Cangelosi’s goal on Dec. 6. RAD BRAD Senior Brad Barone is fresh of back-to-back victories, marking his first two wins as netminder for the Eagles. The Medfield, Mass., native stopped 22 and 23 shots, respectively, against Brown and Dartmouth to preserve his first-career triumphs. The Nov. 11 game against Harvard marked Barone’s first start in six career games played. For his career, the Medfield, Mass., native owns a 2.43 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with a 2-1-0 record. COLD-BLOODED (PENALTY) KILLERS Boston College possess the 12th-ranked penalty killing unit in the country and fourth best in all of Hockey East. The Eagles have denied 126-of-145 chances with a stoppage rate of 86.9 percent.

CAREER DAY(S) FOR DEMKO In three of Thatcher Demko’s four starts between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, the San Diego, Calif., native set a new career best or matched it. On Nov. 29, despite suffering a 1-0 loss at Providence, Demko posted a new career best with 37 saves. The following outing on Dec. 5 at New Hampshire, Demko matched that same number to post respective 37-save performances. Before the first half concluded, Demko stoned 41 shots against Michigan to help the Eagles preserve a 5-1 win against the Wolverines. Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees. Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 473 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (468) and North Dakota (462) trail by a slim margin.

In 2012, they chose to endow the head men’s ice hockey coach position, currently held by Jerry York. The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program.
