WorthNoting BOSTON COLLEGE vs. MERRIMACK Boston College plays its requisite Hockey East contest in between the two Beanpot games when the Eagles travel to North Andover for their first trip to Lawler Arena since Jan. 21, 2014. Before skating away with a 4-1 win at Merrimack that night, the Warriors forced overtime in the Eagles last two trips there, winning one of them. Boston College possesses one of the longer streaks going in Hockey East and has not lost in 29 games within the confines of Conte Forum against Merrimack, mounting a 26-0-3 record, dating back to Oct. 31, 1997. All-time at Kelley Rink, BC is 36-6-3 against Merrimack since the start of Hockey East play. The narrative shifts a bit on the road as BC is 3-4-1 in its last eight outings at Merrimack and since the Eagles have been a member in Hockey East, BC owns just a 56.4 percent win percentage (21-16-2) at Lawler Arena. All-time, the Eagles possess a 63-21-5 overall. Merrimack head coach, Mark Dennehy, a former Eagle under Len Ceglarski, started off his career against Jerry York winless in his first 19 meetings. York posted a 17-0-2 mark against Dennehy’s club until he obtained the elusive first win over his alma mater on Nov. 1, 2009, in North Andover. In all, York is 28-4-3 against Dennehy. Merrimack’s has won once in its last nine tilts against the Eagles with that victory taking place on Feb. 15, 2013, when Conor Toomey scored an overtime game-winning power play goal with 31 seconds left in overtime in North Andover. In the first meeting of the season on Jan. 21, Chris Calnan scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season in a 2-1 win at Kelley Rink. WARRIOR WATCH When Boston College skated against Merrimack on Jan. 21, the Warriors were ranked higher (No. 14) than the Eagles (No. 19) in a matchup for the first time ever. Since losing to BC, Merrimack has slipped to No. 18 in the USCHO.com rankings and has gone 1-2-1 since. When Boston College hosted MC, that tilt was smack dab in the middle of a five-game tear over the course of 10 days (2-2-1). Following the BC loss, Merrimack tied and lost to last-place UMass, 4-4 and 4-1, before responding with a 2-1 win over No. 10 UMass Lowell on Jan. 21. The following night at Tsgonas Center, the River Hawks topped Merrimack, 4-1, on Jan. 21. Freshman sensation Brett Seney continues to lead the Warriors offense with 23 points (10-13-23) which is good for 64th nationally. Amongst all rookies, Seney is tied for fourth, nationally, with 0.92 points per game. Sophomore Hampus Gustafsson is one of eight Hockey East skaters with five or more power play goals thus far while rookie Jace Hennig has racked up four. Despite all that scoring, Merrimack’s offense ranks just 41st in the country and 11th in the league. The defensive corps is one of the stingiest in college hockey, surrendering only 2.15 goals per game. Veteran netminder Rasmus Tirronen can be credited with much of that effort, owning the 13th-best save percentage in college hockey (.929) and 23rd-best goals against average (2.12). Tirronen’s .647 winning percentage is fourth in the conference. Merrimack’s special teams’ units are opposite one another. The power play is 40th at 15. 3 percent (18-of-118) while the penalty kill ranks fourth in the country, denying opponents 89.5 percent (102-of-114) of the time. BEANPOT BLUES Both teams skate in to Tuesday’s semifinal red-hot as Northeastern sports a 5-1-3 mark in Boston College had its quest of six-consecutive Beanpot championships dashed on Tuesday, Feb. 3, when the Eagles lost to Northeastern in the second semifinal contest, 3-2. NU’s Dustin Darou broke a 2-2 tie with 1:34 left in regulation to win the chance to take on Boston University. The Eagles will play Harvard in the consolation game. BC was chasing the Terriers’ Beanpot Tournament record of six-straight Beanpot titles from 1995 to 2000. BETWEEN THE BEAN In most cases during the Beanpot, BC plays a league game the Friday night between the Beanpot. Since York’s arrival, Boston College has scripted a sterling record of Friday games in between Beanpot Mondays, posting a 12-3-2 mark. The Eagles have won every game of that nature since 2004 when BC tied Merrimack, 4-4, on Feb. 9, 2004. The last time BC lost a game in between the Beanpot was Feb. 9, 2001 (PC, 3-5).

KILLING ‘EM SOFTLY Ryan Fitzgerald tallied a short-handed goal against Northeastern in the Beanpot Tournament. It marks his second tally of that variety and he is now just one of 21 skaters on all of college hockey with a pair short-handed goal on the season and just one of four in Hockey East (Michael Colantone – UMass Lowell | Danny O’Regan – Boston University | Blaine Byron – Maine). CENTURIAN MEETS HIS MARK Junior Michael Matheson played in his 100th-career game as an Eagle on Jan. 30 and doled out his 50th-career assist in that contest. The Pointe-Claire, Quebec, native leads the Eagles in career points with 63 (13-50-63). PARSING THE PAIRWISE Heading into the Beanpot, BC has jumped up to 12th in the Pairwise rankings with an RPI of .6296. The Eagles made a big move amongst Hockey East teams in the Pairwise and are now the third-highest ranked club behind Boston University (3rd) and Providence (10th). HATS OFF FOR FITZY Ryan Fitzgerald scored Boston College’s first hat trick of the season and within that trifecta was two power play goals and the game-winner against UConn on Jan. 24. He became the first Eagle to record a hat trick since Johnny Gaudreau turned the trick against Denver on March 29, 2014. Fitzgerald became the 38th skater in college hockey to record a hat trick this season. Alaska Anchorage’s Bret Cameron scored four goals in a game this year. RAUCOUS ROOKIES Boston College’s freshmen class of Alex Tuch, Zach Sanford and Noah Hanifin have enjoyed scoring all at once together. On both Jan. 16 agaist Boston University and Jan. 30 against Providence, the three rookies have all scored in the same game. HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT In the midst of BC’s hot streak, the Eagles have outshot their last five opponents by a sum total of 182-132 as the Eagles have won four of those five games. Shots on goal has had a significant impact on the Eagles’ results this season. When BC limits its opponents to 2029 shots, the Eagles are 11-4. When allowing 30 or more, Boston College is 4-4-2. When BC takes 30 or more shots, Boston College is 10-3-1. BC tied NU in the Beanpot in shots, 23-23. HOCKEY EAST IS HEATING UP Like every time this season, the race of the Hockey East championship is a bottleneck. Heading into the weekend, Boston College is tied with UMass Lowell for second place in the league with 20 points. The Eagles trail league-leading Boston University by four points. BC is one of three teams (UMass and UMass Lowell) to have played a league-high 16 games thus far, so several teams have a game in hand over the Eagles. As if stands, the Eagles would have a first-round bye and have home ice for the quarterfinal series. DEFENSIVE DANDIES Boston College is 9-2-2 in its last 3 outings. The only time the Eagles have given up two goals or more was the 4-2 loss at Maine on Jan. 18 and the 3-2 loss against Northeastern on Feb. 3. Every other outings, BC has limited its opponent to two goals or fewer.

WERESTILLNOTING BEAK STREAK After a bit of an uneasy start (4-5-0), BC had rattled off the nation’s longest unbeaten streak that spanned from Dec. 5, 2014, to Jan. 16, 2015. Over the course of that time, the Eagles recorded a 6-0-2 mark in their unbeaten string of eight games. The Eagles’ unbeaten string started on Dec. 5 with a 2-2 draw at UNH and concluded after losing at Maine on Jan. 18. POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNT Scoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College is an unblemished 10-0-0 when scoring at least one power play goal. When denied a power play goal, the Eagles are 5-9-2. A GRAND OL’ TIME Jerry York’s countdown to 1,000-career victories is officially on. York reached his 979thcareer triumph against Providence on Jan. 30 and now has 21 wins left to reach 1,000. TAG, YOU’RE IT When Boston College scores first, the Eagles have mounted a 11-2-1 record. GILMOUR ARENA Adam Gilmour’s two-career goals at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena have proved to be timely. The Hanover, Mass., native’s first goal at Matthews Arena took place in the form of the overtime winner on Nov. 2, 2013. In his trip to Huntington Ave. on Jan. 9, 2015, Gilmour scored the game-tying goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation to force a draw. AMERICAN EAGLES Thatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Alex Tuch and Miles Wood (incoming in ‘15’16) represent Boston College as five of 23 skaters for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team roster as announced by USA Hockey on the night of Dec. 25. Team USA was dealt an early exit following a loss to Russia in the quarterfinals, but Tuch accounted for a goal and an assist while Hanifin logged a pair of assists over the course of the 2015 World Junior Tournament. BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICE Not only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th). HOCKEY HALL CALL Farkas earned All-America accolades, was a Hobey Baker finalist and ranks sixth all-time in scoring (190). Hogan was instrumental in resurrecting this treasured sport at Boston College, following suspension of hockey as a varsity sport during the Great Depression. Reasoner earned NCAA East first-team honors, AHCA All-America honors, twice captured All-Hockey East first-team honors and helped bring BC to the NCAA National Championship game in 1998. SEASON 26 AT KELLEY RINK BC celebrates its 26th season of playing hockey on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum. Starting in 1988, the BC’s overall record at Kelley Rink is 295-114-35 (.704). The Eagles played at McHugh Forum prior from 1958-86 when Boston College posted an overall mark of 282-95-10 (.748). EAGLES TABBED SECOND IN HOCKEY EAST PRESEASON POLL Boston College has been chosen to finish second in the 2014-15 Hockey East Preseason Poll, voted on by the league coaches and announced at the conference’s annual media day at TD Garden on Sept. 29. The Eagles received three-of-12 first-place votes. This marks the first time in seven seasons and just the third in the last 16 years that Boston College has not been selected as the favorite or co-favorite to win the league title. #TEAMDREWBROWN Hockey East is all about competition and brotherhood. Providence College’s Drew Brown will miss this season as he battles Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. #JohnnyHockey Calgary Flames rookie and former Boston College Hobey Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau will be heading to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 23-25 for the NHL All-Star Weekend. Gaudreau has 13 goals and 32 points in 42 games this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who will participate NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24. As of Jan. 23, Gaudreau replaced an injured Sidney Crosby and played in the NHL AllStar Game on Jan. 25 in Columbus. Gaudreau registered a pair of assists.

EagleOffense WHERE THE OFFENSE STANDS Through 26 games, Boston College is scoring at a rate of 2.96 goals per game, ranking them for 17th in all of college hockey and third in Hockey East. FITZ-HERALDED Not only did Ryan Fitzgerald score BC’s first hat trick of the season on Jan. 24 and first since Johnny Gaudreau’s on March 29, 2014, he became the second skater to log a pair of power play goals in a game (Adam Gilmour - Oct. 25). Fitzgerald scored all three goals in BC’s 3-2 win over UConn and posted his fourth game-winning tally of the season. The sophomore now leads the Eagles with 13 goals after becoming the 38th skater in college hockey to turn in a hat trick. He also scored his second short-handed goal of the season against Northeastern in the Beanpot on Feb. 3. SANFORD SENDS ‘EM OFF Rookie Zach Sanford is the tied as the second-leading scorer for the Eagles and recorded his first-career game-winning goal against Providence on Jan. 30. He also recorded an assists for his third-career multi-point performance. Sanford is currently 20th in points per game (0.70) amidst all first-year skaters in college hockey.

Gilmour scored a power play goal in consecutive games from Jan. 2-3, marking the first time an Eagle has scored power play markers in back-to-back games. GOLDEN TUCH Alex Tuch broke out for several career bests on Jan. 16 at Agganis Arena against BU. Tuch tallied his first-career threepoint performance, his first-career two-goal performance and firstcareer power play goal. Tuch now has five multipoint performance following his goal and assist on Jan. 30 vs. PC. Tuch is currently tied as the 16th-most prolific scorer in the country amongst rookies with 0.73 points per game. CAL ON ME Chris Calnan has accounted for eight points in his last 13 outings (6-2-8), including his fourth game-winning goal of the season that came against Merrimack on Jan. 21. EagleOffense GAME-WINNING GUSTO Sophomore Chris Calnan and Ryan Fitzgerald are tied with two others having scored the most game-winning goals in Hockey East. Both Calnan and Fitzgerald have registered four game-winning goals. COMIN’ STRAIGHT AT YA Destry Straight became the first active Eagle on the 2014-15 roster to score a goal in the Beanpot Tournament on Feb. 3 against Northeastern. SIT ‘EM DOWN Senior assistant captain Michael Sit scored his first goal the season at Maine on Jan. 18. He owns six goals for his career. GAUDREAU 2.0 Sophomore Matthew Gaudreau has dressed in 21 games this season, scoring a goal in two of them already. The Carneys Point, N.J., native also scored in back-to-back games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, marking his first-career point streak. Gaudreau has played in 21 career games and netted his first-career goal against Army on Nov. 10. He also registered his firstcareer assist on Nov. 22 against Maine.

CASH CAM Cam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. It marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct. 24, Spiro scored his firstcareer two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012. CAGED UP CANGE Austin Cangelosi scored his first-career power play goal on Jan. 2 against Brown. Cangelosi’s first PPG fell on his 57thcareer game. Cangeolsi has now scored three goals from Dec. 5 - Jan. 2 after going scoreless in his first 14 games this season. Cangelosi scored BC’s first game-tying goal of the season on Dec. 5 and followed that with another on Dec. 6.

GIMMIE MOUR GILMOUR Following his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s secondconsecutive Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner against the Minutemen. The opening night against Colorado College, Gilmour doled out a pair of assists for a five-point weekend. Gilmour now has a pair of two-goal games under his belt his first occurring against Boston University on Jan. 17, 2014. EagleDefense DEFENSIVE POSITIONING BC’s defense is currently tied for 19th, surrendering 2.33 goals per game. That mark ranks fifth in Hockey East. BLUE-LINE BOPPERS The Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 80 goals on the season with 14 coming from the twigs of the blue liners. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen). Heading into the weekend of Jan. 16, Teddy Doherty (5-12-17) and Michael Matheson (2-1517) are tied for fourth in team scoring, respectively. HANIFIN HAVIN’ FUN Newcomer Noah Hanifin tallied his fourth multi-point performance of the season (1-1-2) on Jan. 16, including his first-career power play goal. Hanifin scored his first-career goal as an Eagle against Colorado College and followed that with his first-career mutli-point game with both assists on Adam Gilmour’s 5-on-3 tallies against UMass. At UMass on Nov. 21, Hanifin registered his first-career three-point performance. Hanifin has scored a point in five of his last seve outings, including his fourth goal of the year on Jan. 30.

MATHESON MAKES IT 100 Captain Michael Matheson turned in his third-career playmaker (three assists) in the win against UMass on Oct. 25 with his last one taking place against Providence on Jan. 10, 2014. In his 100th-career game on Jan. 30, the Canadian captain logged his 50th-career assist. McCAUTION Sophomore defensemen Ian McCoshen scored his secondcareer game-winning goal and first of the season against Michigan on Dec. 13. McCoshen has scored a goal in each game against Michigan. POWER PLAY PLAUDITS Sophomore Ian McCoshen not only score the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame agaisnt RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights. McCoshen has also doled out three assists thus far.

THE SHERIFF RETURNS Steve Santini missed most of the first half of the season following scheduled wrist surgery Oct. 28, 2014. Santini returned to the lineup following his 17game hiatus and logged his first assist of the season in his return on Jan. 10. YOU’RE TED WRONG Teddy Doherty capped a career-best four-game point streak (Dec. 6 - Jan. 3) and has most recently helped the Eagles clinch the Ledyard Classic trophy with the game-winning goal against Dartmouth on Jan. 3. For his three-point weekend at Dartmouth, Doherty was awarded the Tournament MVP. EagleDefense McCAUTION MAKING MOVES Sophomore Ian McCoshen notched his third-career multipoint game and first-career outing with a pair of assists on Jan. 16, 2015. The Faribault, Minn., native assisted on both Boston College 5-on-3 penalties. LAST LINE OF DEFENSE Sophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko is 14-8-2 on the season and currently ranks 2nd in the NCAA in goals against average with a mark of 2.12. Demko’s save percentage of .926 is good for 19th in college hockey. Demko’s winning percentage of .625 has him tied for 17th in the country. Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixth-best winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

CAREER DAY(S) FOR DEMKO In three of Thatcher Demko’s four starts between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, the San Diego, Calif., native set a new career best or matched it. On Nov. 29, despite suffering a 1-0 loss at Providence, Demko posted a new career best with 37 saves. The following outing on Dec. 5 at New Hampshire, Demko matched that same number to post respective 37-save performances. Freshman forward Alex Tuch was selected by the Minnesota Wild (18th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 15th Eagle in the last 27 years to have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010) and Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees. Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have amassed the most victories in college hockey. Boston College has amassed 470 victories and is only one of three programs to have recorded more than 400 victories during that span. Michigan (468) and North Dakota (462) trail by a slim margin.

In 2012, they chose to endow the head men’s ice hockey coach position, currently held by Jerry York. The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program.
