WorthNoting BOSTON COLLEGE vs. VERMONT Vermont returns to Kelley Rink a decisive game three after battling back and claiming game two, 3-1, after a pair of power play goals by Brady Shaw. Last night’s series-evening win stands as Vermont’s lone post season victory against the Eagles in eight tries. Boston College won the first game, 4-2, after a pair of goals from Zach Sanford, alongside Ryan Fitzgerald and Noah Hanifin.

The 2015 quarterfinals series marks the second time in three seasons the Catamounts have come to The Heights from Burlington for a playoff series. In those previous meetings, Boston College swept the Catamounts off The Heights with respective scores of 4-2 and 4-1 on March 15 and March 16, 2013. BC has knocked off Vermont five times in the quarterfinals (2015 - game one, 2013, 2006), shut out Vermont in the 2010 Hockey East semifinal (3-0) and came away with the Hockey East Tournament title in 2008 with another blanking of Vermont, 4-0. In this season’s previous encounters on Feb. 13-14, 2015, the Catamounts tripped up BC in the series opener in overtime, 3-2. That victory curbed Boston College’s 11-game unbeaten streak against UVM that had stretched back to Nov. 13, 2010. It was also Vermont’s first victory at Kelley Rink since Nov. 15, 2009. It was also Vermont’s second-only triumph in Chestnut Hill since joining Hockey East.

All-time at Kelley Rink, Boston College is 17-3 against Vermont. In the overall series, the Eagles hold a 37-14-5 record with a 24-7-3 total in Hockey East play.

NOTES FROM THE SERIES - Zach Sanford accounted for his first-career two-goal performance in game one of Friday’s quarterfinal matchup against Vermont. The Auburn, N.H., native has posted four multi-point outings this season with his career high coming in the form of playmaker (three assists) against RIT on Oct. 18. Sanford’s second tally also counted as BC’s game-winning tally, marking his second of the season. Sanford also scored the game winner against Providence on Jan. 30.

- Michael Matheson notched his second playmaker of the season with three assists in Friday’s triumph. The junior captain has logged three assists in a game on four occasions as an Eagle, with the last occurring against UMass on Oct. 25.

- Noah Hanifin recorded his sixth multi-point performance of the season with a goal and an assist in Friday’s victory. The Norwood, Mass., native has scored a goal and an assist three times in his rookie season.

- Ryan Fitzgerald has scored a power play goal in each game this series.

- Boston College’s all-time Hockey East quarterfinal series record is 36-16-1 and all-time tournament record is 63-27-2. As a No. 3 seed, Boston College is now 11-3-0.

JERRY YORK IN THE HOCKEY EAST TOURNAMENT Jerry York’s nine Hockey East tournament titles (1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012) are the gold standard. BU’s Jack Parker is second with seven. York is 53-16-1 (.764) in 70 conference postseason contests. Boston College has advanced to the semifinal round of the league tournament in 10-of-15 seasons overall under York. The Eagles also own the most Hockey East championship appearances in league history with 16.

POSTSEASON SEEDING Boston College will be the No. 3 seed in the Hockey East Tournament for the fourth time and first time since 2006 when the Eagles played Vermont in the quarterfinals for the first time. As a No. 3 seed, the Eagles have amassed a 11-3 record and made it to the Hockey East Championship on three occasions in the slot, winning the title in 1999 in a 5-4 win against New Hampshire in overtime.

ALL WE DO IS WIN – WIN - WIN With a 21-11-3 mark heading into the playoffs, BC has locked up another winning season. In its 93 seasons of varsity hockey, BC had totaled 74 winning seasons for a winning percentage of 80 percent. It’s the 18th-straight winning season under Jerry York. With the Feb. 27th victory at Notre Dame, the Eagles have won 20 games in six-consecutive seasons, tying Jerry York’s streak of six-straight 20-win seasons starting in 2002-03 and concluding in 2007-08. Under York’s guidance, the Eagles have already posted 20 wins on 15 occassions.

SHOOTING GALLERY In the regular season finale at Notre Dame on Feb. 28, the Eagles logged 56 shots on net. That total marked the highest Eagle shot aggregate in almost seven years. Boston College has not posted that many shots on net since the 2008 Hockey East semifinals on March 21, 2008, when BC clipped New Hampshire, 5-4, in triple overtime. The Eagles posted 67 shots that game.

NO LUCK FOR THE IRISH Before Thatcher Demko’s 35-save shutout on Feb. 27 at Notre Dame, Boston College’s last shutout took place at home against UMass Lowell on Feb. 11, 2014 in a 3-0 victory. The Eagles’ last shutout on the road occurred after Thatcher Demko stopped 30 shots at Providence on Jan. 31, 2014. Demko now has three-career blankings, while the Feb. 27 performance was his first of the season.

OVERTIME OH YEAH! Ryan Fitzgerald’s overtime game-winning goal against Harvard on Feb. 23 marked the first OT victory for BC in six tries. The last time BC won a game in overtime was Adam Gilmour’s walk-off goal at Northeastern on Nov. 2, 2013. The last time the Eagles won an overtime game at home was on Feb. 26, 2010, against UMass.

SENIOR SCHWANN SONG The senior class of Brad Barone, Brian Billett, Danny Linell, Michael Sit, Quinn Smith, Cam Spiro and Destry Straight played in their last regular season game as Eagles at Kelley Rink on Friday night. FITZY ON THE SPOT Ryan Fitzgerald’s overtime winner against Harvard counts as his fifth game-winning marker of the season. That figure is tied with UConn’s Spencer Naas for second-best in Hockey East and tied for eighth most in the NCAA. GOLDEN EAGLES Both Teddy Doherty and Ryan Fitzgerald both met the 50-point plateau for their careers on Saturday, Feb. 14, against Vermont. Doherty now has nine goals and 44 helpers for 53 points in 100 career games played while Fitzgerald hit the benchmark (27-24-51) in his 70th-career game.

POWER PLAY IS PARAMOUNT Scoring on the power play has proved to be key to the Eagles’ success in the early goings of the 2014-15 schedule. Boston College is a nearly unblemished 14-2-1 when scoring at least one power play goal. When denied a power play goal, the Eagles are 7-10-2.

GILMOUR ARENA Adam Gilmour’s two-career goals at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena have proved to be timely. The Hanover, Mass., native’s first goal at Matthews Arena took place in the form of the overtime winner on Nov. 2, 2013. In his trip to Huntington Ave. on Jan. 9, 2015, Gilmour scored the game-tying goal with 2:15 remaining in regulation to force a draw.

AMERICAN EAGLES Thatcher Demko, Noah Hanifin, Ian McCoshen, Alex Tuch and Miles Wood (incoming in ‘15’16) represent Boston College as five of 23 skaters for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team roster as announced by USA Hockey on the night of Dec. 25. Team USA was dealt an early exit following a loss to Russia in the quarterfinals, but Tuch accounted for a goal and an assist while Hanifin logged a pair of assists over the course of the 2015 World Junior Tournament.

BC: THE NHL’s FIRST CHOICE Not only did Boston College lead all of college hockey in 2013-14 by dispersing 26 Eagles across the National Hockey League, BC has placed 18 skaters on opening night rosters for the 2014-15 NHL season. That mark is tops in Hockey East. In regards to college hockey, seven first-round picks are among the nearly 200 NHL draft picks on college rosters, including at least one on 40 teams. Boston College is the only team in the country with two first-round draft picks, including junior captain Michael Matheson (Florida – 23rd) and Alex Tuch (Minnesota – 18th).

#JohnnyHockey Calgary Flames rookie and former Boston College Hobey Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau headed to Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 23-25 for the NHL All-Star Weekend.

Gaudreau has 15 goals and 45 points this year, which is second amongst all NHL rookies. The winger is one of six rookies who participated in the NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24.

Gaudreau replaced an injured Sidney Crosby and played in the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 25 in Columbus. Gaudreau registered a pair of assists.

Johnny also made headlines on Jan. 12, 2015, after applying for a trademark for the name “Johnny Hockey”, TSN first reported.

“We were concerned that people were going to abuse the Johnny Hockey name, coming out with Johnny Hockey shirts and stuff and we wanted to make sure that did not occur,” Lewis Gross, Gaudreau’s agent, told TSN. “We felt that Johnny was going to be a special player and if he takes off the way we felt he could, he has the potential to have endorsement opportunities that could be very valuable.”

EagleOffense WHERE THE OFFENSE STANDS Through 36 games, Boston College is scoring at a rate of 2.92 goals per game, ranking it 21st in all of college hockey and fifth in Hockey East.

SANFORD SENDS ‘EM OFF Zach Sanford notched his first-career two-goal performance against Vermont on March 13 and accounted for his second game-winning goal of the season. Sanford is tied for third in scoring for the Eagles and recorded his first-career gamewinning goal against Providence on Jan. 30. Sanford is currently tied for 21st in points per game (0.66) amidst all first-year skaters in college hockey.

CAN’T TUCH THIS Alex Tuch earned BC’s third Hockey East award of the season, earning Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 16. The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native scored a goal with 9.6 seconds left to force overtime against Vermont on Feb. 13 before scoring the game-winner in BC’s 6-5 win on Feb. 14.

Tuch leads the Eagles in points, having logged 14 goals and 14 assists. On the national landscape, Tuch is eighth amongst all rookies in college hockey with 0.82 points per game and is the fourth highest-scoring freshman in Hockey East.

GAUDREAU 2.0 Sophomore Matthew Gaudreau netted the game-tying goal on Feb. 23 against Harvard in the Beanpot, marking one of his three tallies this season. The Carneys Point, N.J., native also scored in back-to-back games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14, marking his first-career point streak. Gaudreau has played in 37 career games and netted his first-career goal against Army on Nov. 10. He also registered his first-career assist on Nov. 22 against Maine.

HAPPY GILMOUR Adam Gilmour’s career best six-game point streak game to a close on Jan. 18 at Maine, but strung together four goals and four assists over the course of Dec. 13 to Jan. 16. Gilmour leads BC with five power goals on the season. Gilmour is currently tied for 41st in the nation in that category and tied for 11th in Hockey East. Gilmour also leads BC with the most multi-point performances this season with eight.

FITZ-HERALDED Not only did Ryan Fitzgerald score BC’s first hat trick of the season on Jan. 24 and first since Johnny Gaudreau’s on March 29, 2014, he became the second skater to log a pair of power play goals in a game (Adam Gilmour - Oct. 25). Fitzgerald scored all three goals in BC’s 3-2 win over UConn.

He is Boston College’s goal scoring leader (15).

He also accounted for the overtime winner over Harvard in the Beanpot on Feb. 23 after scoring his second short-handed goal of the season against NU in the Beanpot on Feb. 3. Fitzgerald notched his 50th-career point in his 70th-career outing on Feb. 14. EagleOffense CAL ON ME Chris Calnan has registered three two-goal performances this year. His most recent two-goal performance took place on Jan. 10 against Northeastern when he scored the game-winner in short-handed fashion. In every two-goal performance this season, Calnan has secured the gamewinning goal.

CANGE UNCAGED Austin Cangelosi scored power play goal in both games against Vermont on Feb. 13-14 and was the the second Eagle to record power play goals in consecutive games this year (Adam Gilmour). Cangelosi strung together his first-career three-game goal scoring streak starting on Feb. 6.

CASH CAM Cam Spiro set up the play for Teddy Doherty’s game-winning goal against RIT on Oct. 18. It marked the Hingham, Mass., native’s first point since March 15, 2013. The following outing against Colorado College on oct. 24, Spiro scored his firstcareer two-goal game in his 28th outing as an Eagle. It also markeds the senior’s second-career two-point game. The last time Spiro notched two points was a one goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Dec. 29, 2012. Spiro also scored his fourth goal of the season in the season finale at Notre Dame on Feb. 28, 2015.

GAME-WINNING GUSTO Ryan Fitzgerald is one of three skaters in Hockey East (Spencer Naas - UConn, Shane Luke - Providence) with five or more game-winning goals. Fitzgerald is tied with seven others for eighth most game-winning goals in college hockey.

COMIN’ STRAIGHT AT YA Destry Straight became the first active Eagle on the 2014-15 roster to score a goal in the Beanpot Tournament on Feb. 3 against Northeastern.

SIT ‘EM DOWN Senior assistant captain Michael Sit scored his first goal the season at Maine on Jan. 18. He owns six goals for his career.

GIMMIE MOUR GILMOUR Following his two power play goal performance and an assist with a career-high six shots against UMass on Oct. 25, Adam Gilmour picked up Boston College’s secondconsecutive Hockey East honor after claiming Player of the Week honors on Monday, Oct. 27. One of Gilmour’s two 5-on-3 goals proved to the game winner against the Minutemen. EagleDefense DEFENSIVE POSITIONING BC’s defense is currently tied for 18th, surrendering 2.36 goals per game. That mark ranks third in Hockey East.

BLUE-LINE BOPPERS The Eagles’ defensive corps is not having a problem lighting the lamp itself. Boston College has scored 105 goals on the season with 19 coming from the twigs of the blue liners. In BC’s first victory of the season against RIT, four of Boston College’s six goals game from defensemen (Matheson, Doherty, Santini, McCoshen). Three of BC’s top seven scorers are defensemen (Teddy Doherty, Noah Hanifin and Michael Matheson).

SAVAGE ASSISTER Scott Savage notched his first multi-point outing with a pair of assists against Vermont on Feb. 14 this season. The San Clemente, Calif., native recorded three multi-assist performances as a freshman.

McDOUBLE Sophomore defensemen Ian McCoshen has been on fire as of late, accounting for six points (4-2-6) in as many games.

The Faribault, Minn., native scored his first-career two-goal game against Vermont on Feb. 14 and followed that with his third power play goal of the season and game-tying tally against Lowell on Feb. 20.

McCoshen also scored his third-career gamewinning goal in BC’s 2-0 shutout of Notre Dame on Feb. 27.

THE SHERRIFF RETURNS Steve Santini missed most of the first half of the season following scheduled wrist surgery Oct. 28, 2014. Santini returned to the lineup following his 17-game hiatus and logged his first assist of the season in his return on Jan. 10.

HANIFIN HYPE Newcomer Noah Hanifin tallied his sixth multi-point performance of the season on March 13 (1-1-2) and secured an assist in fourstraight outings from Feb 6-20. The highly-touted NHL prospect has scored at least one point in 12 of his last 17 games, including four multi-point showings over that timeline. The Hanover, Mass., native is tied for second amongst all skaters with a +15 rating.

TEDDY BALLGAME Teddy Doherty registered his 50th-career point on Feb. 14 and is currently tied for fourth on the team in scoring. Doherty is tied for seventh in scoring in the league, and tied for 19th amongst all defensemen.

EagleDefense MATHESON MAKES IT 100 Captain Michael Matheson notched his secod playmaker (three assists) of the season and fourth of his career in game one of the HEA quarters on March 13. Matheson has registered three points in a game on five occassions. In his 100th-career game on Jan. 30, the Canadian captain logged his 50th-career assist.

POWER PLAY PLAUDITS Ian McCoshen not only scored the Eagles’ first power play goal of the season late in the third frame against RIT, it stood as his first-career power play marker on The Heights.

McCoshen has also doled out 10 assists thus far.

LAST LINE OF DEFENSE Sophomore goaltender Thatcher Demko just started his 50thcareer game on The Heights on Feb. 13, 2015. This season, Demko is 19-11-3 and currently ranks 25th in the NCAA in goals against average with a mark of 2.18. Demko’s save percentage of .927 is good for 17th in college hockey. Demko’s winning percentage of .641 has him tied for 16th in the country.

Following his freshman campaign, Demko was drafted by Vancouver, 36th overall, in last summer’s NHL Entry Draft. As a freshman, Demko turned in in college hockey’s sixthbest winning percentage (.729 – 16-5-3) with a 2.24 goals against average and a .919 save percentage.

DEMKO DOLING IT OUT Thathcher Demko recorded his fifth-career assist and first since the season opener at UMass Lowell on Oct. 10. Demko’s helper came on Austin Cangelosi’s goal on Dec. 6.

RAD BRAD Senior Brad Barone is fresh of back-to-back victories, marking his first two wins as netminder for the Eagles. The Medfield, Mass., native stopped 22 and 23 shots, respectively, against Brown and Dartmouth to preserve his first-career triumphs.

The Nov. 11 game against Harvard marked Barone’s first start in six career games played. For his career, the Medfield, Mass., native owns a 2.43 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with a 2-1-0 record.

COLD-BLOODED (PENALTY) KILLERS Boston College possess the tied for 10th-ranked penalty killing unit in the country and third best in all of Hockey East.

The Eagles have denied 134-of-153 chances with a stoppage rate of 87.6 percent.

CAREER DAY(S) FOR DEMKO In three of Thatcher Demko’s four starts between Nov. 29 and Dec. 13, he set a new career best or matched it. On Nov. 29, despite suffering a 1-0 loss at C, Demko posted a new career best with 37 saves.

The following outing on Dec. 5 at New Hampshire, Demko matched that same number to post respective 37-save performances.

Before the first half concluded, Demko stoned 41 shots against Michigan to help the Eagles preserve a 5-1 win against the Wolverines. Demko notched his first shutout, second of his career, with 35 saves at Notre Dame on Feb. 27.

In 2012, they chose to endow the head men’s ice hockey coach position, currently held by Jerry York. The $5M commitment permanently attached the Schiller Family to a position and a leader they feel is so important to BC. Admiring the standards off the ice as much as on, Phil cited his respect and enjoyment in watching Jerry York run the program.
