GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT PART-TIME STUDIES HOW PART-TIME STUDIES WORKS AT BCIT To take most courses or start many of the programs offered through Part-time Studies, you are not required to apply and be accepted. In most cases, you simply pick the courses you want to take, register, and then pay your fees. However, some courses may require departmental approval before you can register. Check the program’s web page for complete details. You can opt to take courses as part of a program that leads to a credential. Just fill out and submit a Part-time Program Declaration form (go to bcit.ca/pts and click on Downloads).
PREREQUISITES All students are responsible for ensuring they have the necessary prerequisites before undertaking any course. Many part-time programs require English at the BC Grade 12 level. Furthermore, to be successful in BCIT’s applied learning environment, applicants must demonstrate a suitable level of English in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In order to be admitted to a program, you will be required to provide proof that you meet the specified English-language proficiency requirement. Please check the program web page for specific requirements. BCIT has several upgrading courses for students who wish to improve their Englishlanguage skills (page 8).
FEES, REFUNDS, AND WITHDRAWALS Course fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. The preferred methods of payment are: credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express); cash or debit card (in person only); cheque or money order; or letter of authorization from employer (to be invoiced by BCIT).
Refund information, including the deadline, will be provided when you register for a course. Special fees for some courses are non-refundable, and different refund requirements may apply. Submit withdrawal requests to Student Information and Enrolment Services at either Burnaby Campus or Downtown Campus before the refund deadline. Once the refund deadline has passed, you will need to complete a Request to Withdraw from a Part-time Studies Course form.
PROGRAM APPLICATION AND APPROVAL
Program advisors can help you on your path to becoming a part-time student at BCIT by providing the information you need and by answering your questions. If they can’t answer a question, they’ll find someone who can. Look them up at bcit.ca/advising.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Need assistance funding your studies? Find out if you qualify for a Part-time Studies grant at bcit.ca/finaid/parttime.
DEGREES
WHY APPLY TO A PROGRAM? Many of BCIT’s Part-time Studies courses are part of larger programs that can earn you a credential including a certificate, diploma, and degree. You could start with just one course, and end up with a degree. The first step is to apply for program approval. This ensures that BCIT is aware of your intent to complete a program as it is currently outlined. BCIT continuously reviews programs and implements changes based on industry and market trends. Program approval guarantees that credit for courses that are a part of your program will be honoured despite program requirement changes.
HOW DO I REQUEST PROGRAM APPROVAL? If you plan to complete one of the many programs offered through Part-time Studies, you should complete a Part-time Program Declaration form. It is a good idea to complete two or three courses before submitting your request for program approval. You’ll find the form and submission instructions in the Downloads section at bcit.ca/pts.
BCIT degrees provide graduates with both theoretical knowledge and advanced skills that can be applied in the workplace. Currently, BCIT offers 22 baccalaureate degrees. Degrees are offered in full-time and part-time format or by distance and online learning to accommodate individual needs and schedules. Degrees that can be earned through Part-time Studies are described in more detail throughout this guide, or visit bcit.ca/study/credentials for more details.
