YOUR GENEROSITY IN ACTION
In this annual report, we are proud to share that BCIT’s vision of empowering people, shaping BC, and inspiring global progress continues to gain momentum thanks to the generous support of our corporate, individual, and alumni donors. Together, as at the end of March 31, 2024, we have raised more than $116 million towards the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign, supporting our key pillars—campus redevelopment, access and inclusion, and teaching and learning innovation. These contributions are transforming the future for our students, industry, and the province.
With philanthropic support, we have been able to make investments in campus redevelopment to ensure our graduates are in high demand. This year, with support from over 45 organizations and individuals, BCIT reached an important INSPIRE milestone in raising $33 million for the construction of the Trades and Technology Complex showcasing the strong collaboration between BCIT and industry.
In 2023/24, more than 1,900 BCIT students received entrance awards, scholarships, bursaries, and graduate achievement awards totalling over $2.7 million. For many, these gifts provide financial relief allowing them to focus on their studies. Additionally, with a donation of $5.527 million from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, BCIT is able to deliver and expand early access skills training for high school students thus impacting our ability to develop the future workforce of BC.
In support of teaching and learning, donors and industry partners have made significant contributions to promote student success. This past year, BCIT recognized Kiewit Corporation, a long-time BCIT donor and partner with the unveiling of the future Kiewit Tool Room at NE4 (Carpentry) in recognition of their $250,000 gift to the INSPIRE Campaign ensuring students are trained in an environment that prepares them for succesful careers.
The continued support for the future Trades and Technology Complex anchored by the Concert Properties Centre for Trade and Technology, will increase access to applied learning and innovation as well as increase capability to produce the skilled workforce needed for BC’s economic growth. BCIT donors are ensuring students have access to receive a transformative applied learning experience in an environment designed to serve their future careers, industry, and our province.
With geneours support from our donors and investment from the provincial and federal governments, approximately $750 million in campus renewal at the BCIT’s Burnaby campus has been enabled. All that we have accomplished this year is thanks to you—our donors. On behalf of our students, staff, and faculty, we sincerely thank you for your generosity and commitment to BCIT.
We would like to extend our gratitude to BCIT President Dr. Jeff Zabudsky for his leadership during an important time of transformation and express our heartfelt thanks to Jackie Jacob, who recently retired as Executive Director, BCIT Foundation after nine years of dedicated service at the Institute. Her leadership was instrumental in driving change, and we look forward to continuing this transfomation in applied learning in BC.
Thank you for making all of this possible at BCIT.

Student award recipient Sia Foryoh inspires students
A single co-parent and former refugee, Sia Foryoh is no stranger to new beginnings. When she started looking for a more fulfilling career, she found it through the BCIT Broadcast and Online Journalism program. To begin her educational journey, she received The Global News Scholars Entrance Award and shared her gratitude in a moving speech at the BCIT Fall Entrance Awards Celebration event: “Your commitment to investing in education speaks volumes.”
“Today is a celebration of us” said Sia Foryoh. “The students who dare to reach for the stars, [and] the generous donors [who] make this all this possible. We are united by our dreams, and together, we will make a lasting impact on the world.”
Coast Capital Savings donates to help build better futures
As a long time supporter of women in trades and the BCIT Trades Discovery for Women Program (TDWP), Coast Capital Savings gifted $150,000 to provide enhanced access to skills training at BCIT for 48 women. This funding helps female students over one year, as they complete a full-time 16-week certificate and explore over 15 different trades disciplines.
The TDWP provides wraparound support for program participants, providing a safe and collaborative environment, helping them acquire trade skills, and build confidence and independence, ultimately leading to a successful career pathway.
Not only do students acquire hands-on experience in trades, but they also gain essential skills such as job searching, labor market research, work-integrated learning, unconscious bias, and respectful and inclusive workplace behavior. In addition, they are certified in Occupational First Aid, WHMIS, Scissor Lift and Lift Truck operation and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).
Coast Capital Savings’ investment in students unlocks opportunities and drives meaningful change in the communities we live and work in. By championing equitable access to education, they are levelling the field and removing barriers to help people build their better future.
BCIT receives major donation from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation
In an effort to expand early access to skills training and education, the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation donated $5.527 million to the Institute to deliver trades training to high school students.
The funding will be used to establish a new Trades Foundation for Youth Program that will see BCIT providing technical training at four high schools for indemand skilled trades: Piping, Electrical, Metal Fabrication, and Marine Fitter, marking a substantial investment that will significantly expand trades opportunities for young people. The program is expected to impact 400 high school students over the next seven years.
Spring into student success: generosity blooms from the BCIT community
This past holiday season, BCIT’s community of generous supporters came together once again to support the Student Success Fund. Contributions to the Student Success Fund provide emergency bursaries, grants, and other funding to the students who need it most.
As the cost of living rises, BCIT students are feeling the strain. In the past two years, student requests for financial support have increased by nearly 40 percent. Many students balance challenging course loads with part-time work and struggle to meet basic needs such as food and housing.
Because of donors like you, our students are able to overcome immense financial pressures, focus on their studies, and achieve their goals.
NEW WAYS OF THINKING, LEARNING AND COLLABORATING
TEACHING AND LEARNING EXCELLENCE
Whether it’s immersive simulations, virtual augmented reality, collaborative makerspaces, or cooperative education, BCIT is innovating applied education for the future. Through the generosity of donors towards our Teaching and Learning Excellence pillar, BCIT Foundation is helping to future-proof the education our students need and industry relies on to succeed.

Canadian National Railway Company donates $475K locomotive
BCIT and the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) announced CN’s donation of a $475,000 locomotive to the Institute. As CN’s largest gift-in-kind to BCIT, this donation is the second locomotive gift to the BCIT School of Transportation.
At the event, BCIT unveiled CN’s locomotive gift and announced the naming of the new Canadian National Railway Company Classroom at the Motive Power Centre of Excellence. Students in the Railway program can look forward to enhanced training and up-to-date industry knowledge, including practical skills required for employment in the industrial railway, short line, and railway supplier environments.
“We’re pleased to support BCIT and provide a 1992 GE Dash 8-40CW locomotive, our second such locomotive gift to the Institute,” shared Mahir Abdulle, Assistant Superintendent, BC South, CN. “The locomotive gift will support the BCIT Railway Conductor and Operations program and give students invaluable hands-on training and learning opportunities. Opportunities like this one are an extension of CN’s commitment to students and applied learning.”
The partnership between CN and BCIT spans nearly four decades. As a major employer of BCIT students, CN continues to be an active partner at the Institute. Prior to this donation, the company has supported learners through student-focused awards programs, giftsin-kind, and sponsorship of special events in the School of Transportation.
BCIT and Mastercard announce over $460,000 in funding to support students, launch the new Mastercard Chair in Digital Trust
In an effort to keep Canada at the forefront of global innovation for generations to come, BCIT and Mastercard have established a partnership to provide critical funding assistance for students studying computer technologies as well as advance research in cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI), focused on digital trust.
Mastercard’s investment will support BCIT students through the Mastercard Computing Technology Awards. Three students studying in the fields of computer systems, computer sciences, and cybersecurity are eligible for awards of up to $20,960. As part of Mastercard’s commitment to build a more diverse technological workforce, students from an underrepresented group will be given preference.
Dr. Aaron Hunter, Faculty in the BCIT School of Computing, has been named the first Mastercard Chair in Digital Trust at BCIT, and will lead the development of faculty and student research activities in this emerging field. Dr. Hunter holds a Ph.D. in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University. His research interests lie at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Information Security. Along with his academic research, Dr. Hunter has also worked in the private sector as a software developer and an industrial research analyst.
Increasing Diversity in the Field of Engineering
Women make up more than half of the Canadian population but are underrepresented in engineering education and the engineering profession. Recognizing that diversity provides alternative perspectives to develop solutions for complex challenges, a generous anonymous donor, whose career began in civil engineering, made a remarkable contribution of $500,000 to advance equity and diversity in the field. This generous gift allowed BCIT to launch a campaign supporting Women in Engineering initiatives. The gift fueled a targeted marketing campaign, provided entrance awards and bursaries, and facilitated events including a Women in Engineering Panel Discussion and Info Session.
ADAPTIVE LEARNING SPACES FOR INNOVATION
AND COLLABORATION

BCIT announces $33M in funding for new Trades and Technology Complex showcasing industry support and demand for grads
In the fall of 2023, BCIT announced reaching a milestone of $33 million in funding supporting new and renewed buildings known as the Trades and Technology Complex. Anchored by the new Concert Properties Centre for Trades and Technology and the Robert Bosa Carpentry Pavillion, this investment will be leveraged with support from the Province of BC to significantly increase the opportunities and access to hands-on skills development of students pursuing a trades and technology education and career. When completed, the $220 million investment will provide an adaptive, innovative, and flexible learning environment through leading-edge, energy-efficient, sustainable design. The Complex will have the capacity for 700 new full-time student spots annually, alleviating waitlists and delivering the trades training needed to meet the labour needs of the province. In addition, the Complex will serve as a living lab where students from different disciplines such as engineering, architecture and construction will interact, collaborate, and undertake projects together.
The new space will allow BCIT to offer more in-person training and increase the delivery of immersive training for specialized areas, including mass timber construction and net-zero buildings. It will also increase the capacity for designing and delivering effective online training through simulation labs and sophisticated technology-enabled classrooms. This investment will allow BCIT to continue to champion equitable and accessible trade education for all students, prioritizing inclusive learning environments and collaboration.
Kiewit donates $250,000 to BCIT for the Trades and Technology Complex
BCIT and Kiewit unveiled the Kiewit Tool Room at NE4 (Carpentry) in recognition of Kiewit’s generous gift of $250,000 to the BCIT INSPIRE Campaign.
Kiewit’s donation supports the future Trades and Technology Complex and helps ensure students have access to a transformational applied learning experience and an environment designed to serve their future careers, the future of industry, and the future of our province.
As a long-time partner of BCIT spanning over 20 years, Kiewit’s philanthropic partnership includes supporting BCIT’s Distinguished Awards gala, student career fairs, and achievement awards. Kiewit also supports initiatives such as the Entry Skills for Architectural, Construction and Engineering (ACE) fields microcredential program allowing high school students and graduates to explore introductory design and technical skills in these fields.
New student housing under construction at BCIT
Construction is underway on a new 12-storey mass-timber building that will provide 470 students with affordable on-campus housing at BCIT’s Burnaby campus.
“Building secure, stable and affordable housing is essential for students to be successful at their studies,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. “Our government is rapidly building new student housing units across BC, which will help students focus on their classes and lay the foundation for their future.”
The BC government is providing $108.5 million toward the $119.7 million development and an anonymous donor who believes in the need for stable, affordable student housing is offering to match donations in support of the building in the amount of $1.5 million. Once built, this will be the first student housing development at BCIT in 40 years and will more than double the supply of on-campus housing at BCIT.
