BCIT names new trades and technology building after Vancouver developer Concert Properties

In July 2022, BCIT celebrated a $7.5 million donation from Concert Properties toward the INSPIRE Campaign. In recognition of its generosity and longstanding support of students and trades training at the Institute, BCIT announced that the new building will be called the Concert Properties Centre for Trades and Technology. The building will anchor the new and renewed multi-building Trades and Technology Complex, which will feature a covered works yard, simulation-based learning areas, maker spaces, and power, welding and construction areas. As the lead donor to the Campaign, Concert Properties and Concert Co-Founder and CEO David Podmore have inspired many other organizations to join them as supporters of BCIT trades education.

The Gene Haas Foundation donates $750K to transform manufacturing training

Thanks to a generous contribution of $750,000 USD, future BCIT Machinist students will soon be learning in a state-of-the-art training facility. A strong supporter of trades training in Canada and a BCIT supporter for nearly 10 years, the Gene Haas Foundation will help transform 30,000 square feet of the Institute’s existing workshop into a visionary building and living lab that bring together tradition and innovation, trades and engineering, and current and future technologies. The renovated space will also facilitate the creation of a new designated CNC Machinist training area. It is estimated that this new space will be used by 500 Machinist students annually. Thank you, Gene Haas Foundation, for ensuring our students get the leading-edge education they need to succeed and contribute to the province’s economic growth through manufacturing.

BCIT unveils new Beedie Plaza: enhancing campus experience for students

BCIT and the Beedie Foundation announced the opening of the new Beedie Plaza at BCIT’s Burnaby Campus. Made possible by a $5 million donation from the Beedie Foundation and led by Ryan and Cindy Beedie, the plaza is the new landmark gateway to the BCIT Burnaby Campus. Enhancing the experience of BCIT students, the plaza not only provides expansive outdoor space where students can connect, study, or collaborate, but also is an important milestone in the journey to make the campus more pedestrian friendly.

Completed in April 2023, the Beedie Plaza covers an area of 4,000 square metres. It features an Indigenous-designed walkway that anchors the plaza. The mass timber canopy connects to Campus Square, opening up this central part of campus, while the landscaped green space and new seating provide areas for relaxation or gathering. An efficient irrigation system reduces wastewater and supplies the plaza’s rain garden.
