What’s new at Sunday River Resort New Spruce Peak Chairlift
Sunday River Resort will install a new three-person chairlift on Spruce Peak and is currently building a new top terminal on Locke Mountain. Both the new chairlift and top terminal are manufactured by Doppelmayr USA, Inc. The top terminal on Locke Mountain was expected to open in November, while a construction timeline for the new Spruce Peak Triple chairlift is still being determined, and will depend on several factors, including Doppelmayr’s engineering plan for the new chairlift. The engineering plan is for a $2.1 million dollar Doppelmayr fixed-grip three-passenger chairlift to be built in the same location as the original Spruce Peak Triple. And like the original, the new Spruce Peak Triple will use a conveyor system to help load passengers onto the chairlift. Passenger ride time is expected to improve from 12 minutes to 10 minutes. During the replacement interim, Spruce Peak terrain will open as conditions allow and can be accessed before the replacement lift is complete and operating by the Aurora Peak Quad to Borealis and Sirius trails.
Snowmaking and Snow Grooming Upgrades
Sunday River’s snowmakers were named by Ski Area Management Magazine as the 2016 recipient of the HKD I Am A Snowmaker Award, after one of the worst winters on record in New England. This winter Sunday River is investing in new and replacement equipment for the coming season, is renovating its existing pumphouse, and is purchasing two new Pistenbully snowcats. By numbers, Sunday River boasts over 2,000 snowguns, 80 miles of snowmaking pipe, 30 miles of snowmaking hose, 2,200 hydrant stations, and has invested over $7 million in snowmaking equipment in the last decade alone. The two new snowcats will join the resort’s pride to keep man-made and natural snow conditions prime across all eight peaks from the resort’s earliest opening in October to its latest last day in May.
The New Mountain Room by Chef Harding Lee Smith
Through a new partnership with Maine restauranteur Chef Harding Lee Smith, Sunday River will transform overflow seating space in its mid-mountain Peak Lodge on North Peak to house The Mountain Room at Sunday River. Phase one of The
Mountain Room will include a 20-person bar where signature drinks like Smith’s ode to Sunday River, the Happy Place Found—a concoction of top shelf bourbon, blueberry jam, banana, rosemary, and soda water—will be served alongside an extensive menu of cocktails, craft brews, and a short menu of appetizers. Phase two of The Mountain Room, to be completed for the 2017-18 season, will include finalizing the entire restaurant space to open for lunch and dinner. The Mountain Room at Sunday River joins Chef Smith’s collection of restaurants known as The Rooms Restaurants: The Front Room, The Corner Room, The Grill Room, and Boone’s. The Mountain Room is Smith’s only restaurant located at a ski resort and not in Portland, Maine.
Food Trucks Continue to Flock to the Slopes
Skiers and riders will be happy to hear that the Mainely Meatball food truck will again park itself at the base of the resort’s Jordan Bowl for the 2016-17 season. Maine-ly Meatballs offers classic beef, pork, and veggie meatballs to skiers on the go. In the South Ridge base area, newcomer The SaltBox Café—Maine’s only tiny house food truck on wheels— will deliver weekend made to
order specials like their French toast croissant and made to order breakfast sandwiches and burritos, for looking for a quick bite before hitting the slopes.
Fashion and Function
Guests at the Jordan Hotel are in for a treat thanks to a new space being created for a branded retail store (brand to be determined), ski and snowboard rentals, and ski and snowboard check. Located on the second floor of the Jordan Hotel, this new space will transform the guest experience by creating a more efficient rental and ski-check process, in a more convenient location. Additionally, the branded retail store will carry a top of the line name, to be announced at a later date. The new space will open before the Christmas holiday.
Snow Cap Inn Welcomes Dogs
New this winter, Sunday River’s Snow Cap Inn will welcome
guests and their canine friends, thanks to six dedicated dogfriendly rooms. Located a short walk from the resort’s slopes, the Snow Cap Inn features 70 guest rooms with two queen beds at affordable rates. All dog guests will be given a treat at check-in, and are welcome to stay in their owner’s room while the owner is out playing.
Goodbye Chili, Hello Brisket
Sunday River will retire its popular springtime Chili Cookoff event and welcome in its firstever inaugural Brisket Derby in its place. To coincide with the resort’s annual Firefighters’ Race, the Brisket Derby will showcase the area’s best BBQ alongside some of the Maine’s most talented skiing firemen and women. Proceeds from the Brisket Derby and Firefighters’ Race benefit the Sunday River Community Fund. Photo: Sunday River Resort

Get out and explore! There’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of the snowy Maine woods and fields than on a pair of crosscountry skis or snowshoes. The Bethel region provides many choices of terrain. Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center Carter’s is located on the Intervale Road in Bethel, 3.5 miles from Route 26. The center offers a mix of gentle scenic terrain along the banks of the Androscoggin River on the west side of the road, along with more advanced and challenging trails that head up Farwell Mountain to the east. The entire Presidential and Mahoosuc ranges can be seen from the eastern trails. There are 60 kilometers of trails, 40 of which are groomed for skating and classical. The rest are groomed for a 500-acre backcountry experience on the mountain. They also have some more challenging ungroomed terrain for the avid backcountry skier or snowshoer. The large proportion of north-facing trails at higher elevations (up to 1,700
feet) ensure more consistent snow throughout the season. Skiers may also take a break in a yurt-style warming hut, or rest and relax with family and friends at one of the many rustic cabins, located right on the trail system. Carter’s has a fullyequipped cross-country ski shop offering a full line of retail items, including backcountry, touring and racing skis, as well as snowshoes. They also offer rentals and lessons. Carter’s also has a beautiful “Great Room” on the second floor of the ski shop, with cathedral ceiling and many windows. In this room is an extensive collection of unique cross country wood skis dating back 100 years to the great Norwegians. Skiers and snowshoers can also enjoy hot drinks and soups before or after hitting the trails. Carter’s also has rooms to rent in the lodge as well as off-grid cabins to ski into. They’ll start the fire and get the cabin all warmed up for guests, and even bring water to the cabins. Families
have a great time bonding without TV and computers. (Most phones work well up on the mountain.) Opening day is expected to be in early December (207) 824-3880. Carter’s also operates a 20-kilometer cross-country center, and one of New England’s best-equipped cross-country ski shops, at their Route 26 farm in Oxford, about 45 minutes south of Bethel. 6 Winter in Western Maine
“The kids call her name from the lift,” said Greg Schneider. Schneider, of Plympton, Mass., has been a member of the Ski Patrol at Sunday River Resort for 25 years. His patrol partner, Sonja, has only been at it for two seasons. But at 2 years old, she might be making the most visible impact of anyone who wears the patrol logo. Sonja, a very friendly golden retriever, is the first canine member of the Sunday River patrol. She is the fourth golden Schneider has had. He did field trials work with Sonja’s predecessor, and over the years he has spent time studying pedigrees. When it came time three years ago to choose a new dog, he looked for one that had a working heritage, such as in hunting and search and rescue. He found Sonja in British Columbia. That fall, he brought his new puppy to Sunday River’s Fall Festival. “It was amazing the number of people who came up and talked to us,” he said. He wondered if there might be a job for Sonja at Sunday River. He knew that in the Western U.S. dogs are trained by Ski Patrol for search and rescue in avalanche areas. Although that is not much of a
risk in the East, Schneider thought there might still be a role for his dog to play on the patrol, as an “ambassador.” So he began teaching her to be comfortable around crowds, skis and ski boots, as well to acclimate to being outside most of the day. And there was also general obedience training. The next step was getting her comfortable with riding the lift. “We started with the gondola,” he said, to make her feel the most secure. She then graduated to the open chairs, which Schneider said went relatively easily. Through all of this Sonja began serving her ambassadorial role. Skiers quickly took to her, and for Schneider, Sonja served as a good ice breaker to start a conversation, if needed, about ski safety. The pair also stopped in the “slow zones,” and waited
for people to approach them. “We had some amazing guest contacts,” he said. Kids, he said, wanted to come up and “get a good hug from her.” Sonja now enjoys riding the lift and looking down at everyone, anticipating getting to the top, running on the trails and greeting more people. How she negotiates the trails depends on how crowded they are, Schneider said. Sometimes she is on a long lead and runs ahead of him. Sometimes he has her sit and stay while he goes a little way ahead, then motions to her to come. Then there’s the carry. “I ski down carrying her over my shoulder,” he said. Sonja weighs about 50 pounds. In addition to her role as ambassador, Sonja also sometimes plays the role of comforter to an injured skier,
sitting nearby as the patrollers assist. “We’ve had some very good feedback,” said Schneider. He said a relative of a child who was injured in Sonja’s first season “stopped me this year and said how great it had been to have Sonja there.” The canine patroller is also learning another skill – tracking. “Someone goes out in the woods and gets lost for us,” he said. “She’ll go and run the track and find them.” It’s part of a separate training program for her to be certified as a search dog. Schneider said time will tell whether there might be a job for her in that area. Sonja is also a You Tube star. She was filmed last year on the slopes at Sunday River, and she also did her own filming with a Go-Pro camera. Search “Sunday River ski patrol dog” on You Tube to find her.

Come explore Bethel’s local history Visitors looking for the “real” New England experience need look no further than Bethel village with its clusters of classic buildings, white church steeples, and tree-shaded streets. The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society on Broad Street provide visitors with a doorway to the region’s past. The Bethel Historical Society collects, preserves, displays and interprets the history of western Maine and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire through exhibits, lectures, events, and publications. The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society feature eight exhibit galleries and nine period
rooms spread throughout two buildings—the 1821 O’Neil Robinson House and the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House. On site, as well, are an extensive library and archival collection of books, manuscripts and photographs, plus thousands of historic objects that tell the story of the town of Bethel and surrounding region. Throughout the year, the organization provides a full schedule of high quality events for people of all ages. (Visit bethelhistorical.org for up-to-date information on events and exhibit offerings.) Overlooking the historic Bethel Hill common next to the Bethel Library, the Robinson House is a grand
Italianate residence displaying the “connected farm” type of architecture. Regularly changing exhibits, a well-stocked Museum Shop and the society’s administrative offices are located here. The Mason House, the oldest structure in the village, features a series of fully-furnished period rooms and two floors of Rufus Porter School murals that provide insight into how a prominent Bethel couple lived during the first half of the 19th century. Also located in this building (until the summer of 2017) are the society’s research library and a spacious exhibit hall, where special summer
displays are offered during July and August and which is used at other times for lectures and other programs. The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society are open year-round, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; also Saturday, 1 - 4 pm, during July and August. The Museums are closed Sunday and Monday, and Nov. 1 through Thanksgiving Day. During July and August (and by appointment at other times), the nine-room
period house museum is open for guided tours, and, as always, a wide variety of items associated with the region’s past are always available in the Museum Shop and online. For more information, go to bethelhistorical.org, call 207-824-2908 /800-8242910, or visit the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society on Facebook. Photo: Bethel Historical Society

The Mountains of Maine: Skiing in the Pine Tree State A passion for skiing and a passion for history are combined in an exhibit that is on display all winter in Bethel. The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society have a passion for preserving and showcasing the past. The Ski Museum of Maine and the New England Ski Museum share a passion for the history of our region’s No. 1 winter sport. The three organizations have teamed up to present “The Mountains of Maine: Skiing in the Pine Tree State,” which is on display through May at the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society. The core of the exhibit is on loan from the New England Ski Museum, and it was open to the public in Franconia, New Hampshire, during the 2015-2016
season. It comprises about 60 photographs taken from its own collections and borrowed from others. It covers most of Maine skiing history, from the arrival of the first Swedish immigrants in Aroostook County in the late 1800s, and the narrative continues into the modern era. The principal focus of the photo collection is the development of commercial and non-profit ski areas both large and small. Many of these ski hills, particularly the smallest ones, disappeared decades ago, but others, such as Sunday River, Mount Abram, Black Mountain of Maine, and Shawnee Peak, remain important to our state’s skiing lifestyle. The Ski Museum of Maine has provided artifacts and photos, assembled by curator Scott
Andrews. A collection of skis and snowboards that were manufactured in Maine occupies the center of one room. Some of these were made in Oxford County in the early years of the 20th century, while others were crafted by some of the state’s “boutique” builders -- some within the past few months. Two historical maps are also on display, one created by Andrews and the other by Jared Marshall, a student at Fryeburg Academy. Ski Museum president Wende Gray notes that the exhibit is the latest of a series of collaborations between the Ski Museum of Maine and the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society. The Ski Museum seeks to broaden its programming and support in the
A short rope tow on the eastern side of Jockey Cap, a tiny hill in Fryeburg, was Maine’s first ski lift. Bethel area, with the goal of adding a permanent branch within a few years, she adds. The Bethel Historical Society is currently marking its 50th anniversary, and executive director Randall Bennett notes that because skiing is such an important part of the region’s social and economic landscape, it’s very fitting that this exhibit will be on view in Bethel for 2016-2017. Andrews concurs. “Skiing has been part of the Maine way of life since the late 1800s, offering rec-
reation and competition to both residents and visitors,” he says. “Our museum’s objective is to feed the passion of Maine skiers and to illustrate the significance of our sport to our state’s lifestyle and economy.” The collaborative exhibit runs through May of 2017 and is on view at the Robinson House (10 Broad Street) Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday, and Nov. 1 through Thanksgiving Day. Maine’s only tiny-house food truck
By Amy Wight Chapman
“I wanted to find a way to stay in Maine,” said food truck proprietor Matthew Glatz of his decision to try self-employment. “All of my friends left the state after high school or college.” Last year Glatz opened The SaltBox Cafe in the parking lot of The Great American Ski Renting Company on the Sunday River Road in Bethel. This year, he will be at South Ridge Base Lodge at Sunday River Resort with his featured French toast croissants and breakfast
sandwiches and burritos. A lifelong Sunday River skier, Glatz has found a way to combine the best of a ski-bum lifestyle with gainful employment. Tough job market Glatz grew up in China, Maine. Following high school, he attended Southern Maine Community College and graduated with a two-year degree in culinary arts. After working for a while as a line cook, putting in long hours that included nights, weekends, and holidays, he realized that
commercial cooking in a restaurant was not for him. So he went in a different direction entirely. “My dad owned a residential heating oil business in China,” Glatz said. “When I turned 21, I obtained my commercial truck driving license and went to work for him.” Driving a truck meant better pay, benefits, and regular hours. After the 2008 recession prompted the closing of his father’s oil business, he got a job hauling chemicals for Brown Ship Services in Portland.

An interest in environmental science led him to complete a B.A. in environmental policy and planning from the University of Southern Maine while driving a truck full-time for the ship chandlery. After finishing his degree, he spent over a year applying for jobs, even expanding his job search as far as Alaska. “Maine is a great, diverse place to live and explore, but it doesn’t offer a good job market for young people,” he said. Injuries he suffered in a 2014 accident, when his motorcycle was hit by a distracted driver, made the physical demands of his trucking job with the ship chandlery difficult. He continued to search for work in his field, but by the time another year had passed, he said, “I had had it with sending out applications and never hearing back.” He decided to give selfemployment a try. His background in culinary arts, a longtime interest in the tiny house concept, and a conversation with a friend, Nick Rofe, of Portland, inspired The Saltbox Cafe. Rofe, who had also tired of the tough local job market, had recently started his own contracting business, NQR Creative Designs and Home Solutions.
“This was his first tiny house project,” Glatz said. “He was pretty excited.” Working together, he and Rofe designed a fully equipped commercial kitchen on wheels. With the help of several other friends, and access to construction space in a warehouse belonging to Glatz’s former boss, they were able to build it from the ground up in just seven and a half weeks. Building on a trailer base that Glatz bought new, they used mainly recycled construction materials and lumber seconds purchased from Home Depot for 70 percent off. The SaltBox Cafe sign and outside counter were built of reclaimed flooring from a friend’s barn in Bridgton. Glatz searched for good deals on commercial cooking equipment and was able to locate almost everything he needed secondhand, including a refrigeration unit from the technical school at Oxford Hills. “I found the gas stove on Craigslist,” he said, indicating the gleaming commercial range with two large burners and generous griddle space. “It was a great deal, but it took me 22 hours of work to get it cleaned up.” The ventilated stove hood came from a Chinese restaurant in Portland. It was the wrong size for the space,
but Glatz was able to modify it with a metal grinder, then had a cap welded on to make it the right height. The cost, including welding and the installation of a fire-suppression system, was $700. If he had had to purchase the same equipment new, he said, it would have set him back about $6,000. Quality and value The decision to bring The SaltBox Cafe to the Sunday River Road for its inaugural season came about when Glatz recognized that it would be difficult to compete with sit-down restaurants in Portland in the wintertime. “I decided to bring it up here to Bethel, because
Gifts. Clothes. Toys. More.
people who live up here, and people on their way to ski, are already ready for the cold,” he said. A sample from his menu is the “Brown Bag Ski Lunch,” featuring a hearty sandwich—turkey and cheddar, ham and Swiss, a BLT, or a loaded veggie and hummus vegetarian option—on a choice of bread, accompanied by a granola bar, chips, and a bottled water, all packed into a brown paper lunch bag. Sandwiches are served with gourmet condiments. Disappointed with the commercial mayonnaise and
sauces available, Glatz decided to create most of his own from scratch, from the tangy Memphis barbecue sauce on his pulled pork breakfast burritos and sandwiches to a house Dijon mayonnaise he whisks up on-site from fresh ingredients. When ski season ends, he relocates The SaltBox Cafe to Portland. The food truck is fully self-contained, with an RV pump and water tanks, a generator, and the gas range, so he can move it wherever he decides to go. Follow The SaltBox Cafe on Facebook, and look for him at Sunday River.

Journeys in the White Mountain National Forest
The White Mountain National Forest offers countless opportunities for winter adventure, appealing to seasoned recreationists and novices alike. The nearly 800,000 acres of public land in the White Mountain National Forest is managed by the USDA Forest Service for multiple uses, providing recreation, timber, wildlife habitat, wilderness, and clean air and water. Wintertime in the forest provides unique scenery and a variety of recreational opportunities just south and west of Bethel. Hiking, Skiing, and Snowshoeing Several commercial cross-country and downhill ski areas operate on the White Mountain National Forest, offering services and convenience. For a more
primitive experience, the backcountry paths of Hayes Copp ski trails wind through Dolly Copp Campground on Route 16, south of Gorham, N.H. Miles of unplowed roads and trails throughout the forest provide solitude and challenge to skiers and snowshoers looking for a true backcountry experience. Winter is a special time of year in the forest, but requires travelers to plan ahead and prepare with the appropriate equipment for comfort and safety. Skis, snowshoes, or foot stabilizers may all be necessary for winter travel. Dress in layers, carry plenty of food and water, and be prepared for unexpected changes in weather. Visit http://www. hikesafe.com to learn more about hiking safety. Seeking out a hiking group or

creating your own can be a great way to try something new or introduce others to winter recreation. The Androscoggin Ranger Station has snowshoes to loan new enthusiasts for a short walk down to the river or around the property. For the extremely adventurous, there are several area guiding businesses that will introduce you ice climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, or dogsledding. Roads and trails in the Maine portion of the White Mountain National Forest can be accessed from Route 5 in Bethel, the Flat Road in West Bethel, and the Bog Road and Route 113 in Gilead. Visitors can travel through Stow, Maine to access trailheads at the southern end of Route 113. Contact the Androscoggin Ranger District for more information and current conditions.

Three-sided log shelters with a raised floor are available in some areas for overnight accommodations or a quiet lunch break. Scenic Driving Although many of the roads in the interior of the White Mountain National Forest are closed for the winter, the major routes remain open and offer stunning views of the forested mountains. The White Mountain Trail – a national Scenic Byway – loops through northern New Hampshire, displaying grand mountain views. Christmas Trees This may be one of least known treasures of the White Mountain National Forest. Stop by the Androscoggin Ranger Station in Gorham, NH beginning in
late fall to purchase a $5 permit. Don’t expect a perfectly groomed tree, but do expect to have a wonderful journey with your family that may even become an annual tradition. Winter on Mount Washington At 6,288 feet in elevation, the summit of Mount Washington is the highest point in the Northeast and the centerpiece of the White Mountain National Forest. Thousands of hikers and sightseers come each year for a hiking challenge, to experience Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines, to travel to the summit by road or rail, or simply to enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape. The winter environment on Mount Washington is severe and unforgiving. Major storm tracks converge at the summit, creating a frozen landscape for much of the year, with unpredictable and sudden changes in weather. It is not uncommon to see

Bethel: a snowmobile crossroads With more than 10,000 miles of officially maintained sledding trails that traverse New England’s biggest state, Maine is a top destination for visiting snowmobile enthusiasts. It’s all about the trails and the connections. Situated on the flat Androscoggin River Valley, surrounded by hills and mountains — Bethel is a natural crossroads. And snowmobile trails radiate in all directions. Any direction is ideal for one-day trips that cover 75 to 150 total miles, typical for most sledders. Trails leading north of Bethel reach the Rangeley Lakes region via a choice of interesting routes. These include Grafton Notch, one of the most attractive mountain passes in the state, as well as an abandoned railroad grade. Two principal routes lead south to the broad Saco River Valley, one following an attractive low-elevation route, while the other climbs through remote and spectacular Evans Notch, a dramatic mountain pass that straddles the Maine-New Hampshire boundary. West of Bethel is New Hampshire and the White Mountains, tallest in the Northeast, and the gateway communities of Gorham and North Conway. And the area’s amenities can’t be beat, including restaurants and motels with direct trail access and plenty of parking and maneuvering space for trailers. For more information on trails in the region go to http://www.mesnow.com/Map.html.

Fresh Air and Fresh Fish A favorite outdoor activity in western Maine is ice fishing for trout, perch, pickerel, bass, cusk and other species. Nearby ponds that offer a wide variety of fish include Songo, Round, Twitchell Pond and Lake Christopher. Tip-up traps
(with flags that go up when the fish bite) and jigging (using a hand-held line) are the two basic techniques used by local fishermen. If you’re serious, an ice shack makes fishing more comfortable, but in any case, take plenty of clothing. Ice
