Summer at Sunday River Resort

Beginners will love the Easy Tiger trail while those more daring souls will feel like a veritable headliner after tackling the resort’s more technical trail, Rockstar. Deep within one of Sunday River’s forests is a Zipline Tour unlike any other. Six lines, ranging from 100 to 300 feet in length, take zippers up and over a ravine and through a wooded wonderland. All thrills, no skills required. Sunday River’s Zipline Tour is perfect for the beginner or intermediate adventurist. Walking trails and scenic hikes Whether you’re looking for riverside trails right in the village or challenging mountain hikes, the Bethel area has it all.

Here are some examples of easier walks/hikes:

Bethel Pathway. 2.5 miles total: This ADA accessible gravel/paved trail runs alongside the Androscoggin River and is within easy walking distance of Bethel Village. It crosses the river over a recreational bridge. Along the trail are a skatepark, playground and picnic area. Mount Will, 3.3 miles total: This loop hike in Bethel and Newry is one of the recreational gems of the Western Mountains. Two outlooks beckon. The northern ledges are reached via a moderate at first climb which then switchbacks up to the ledges. Continue along the circuit to the south-facing cliff, which overlooks Bethel’s broad river valley and its fertile farmlands. With a binocular, hikers can identify many buildings in Bethel Village. Descending from the south cliffs the trail winds through spruce and fir

before it switchbacks through young hardwoods, where it follows just uphill of a stream that usually holds water. The loop trail can be hiked in either direction. The Roost, 1.0 miles total: This prominent ledge south of Gilead, in the White Mountain National Forest, boasts an elevation of less than 1,400 feet -- small by Western Maine standards -- but the vistas are more extensive than many that require far more exertion. The view to the southwest takes in much of the newly designated Wild River Wilderness area, with New Hampshire’s Carter Range forming the backdrop. Step Falls Trail, off Route 26 in Newry, about 8 miles north of the Route 2/26 intersection, runs along Wight Brook, with swimming holes and water cascades. Maggie’s Nature Trail in Greenwood is a network of woods trails with views from ledges.

Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve (Mahoosuc Land Trust) in Rumford. Two scenic trails. Buck’s and Lapham Ledges in Woodstock, with views of surrounding lakes and ponds. Round Mountain and Albany Mountain trails in Albany Township. The Cataracts, a short trail running along Frye Brook in Andover.

Examples of longer hikes:

Bald Mountain, 3.2 miles total: This spectacular cliff in Woodstock overlooks several remote ponds. The footpath passes near scenic Little Concord Pond before briskly climbing an attractive wooded ridge to the open summit. Many people continue from Bald Mountain to the broad, ledgy peak of Speckled Mountain, which lies 1.3 miles beyond. Puzzle Mountain, 6.4 miles total, 8.6 miles with the Woodsum Spur loop: The Grafton Loop Trail, in Newry has become one of the most

popular medium distance wilderness trails in the region. This first section of the GLT that climbs to the inspiring open summit of Puzzle Mtn is gained via a 3.2-mile segment that climbs to the summit after crossing a series of open ledges. The best views are to the west, with the Mahoosuc Range and the two peaks of Baldpate dominating the horizon. Assuming hikers summit Puzzle first there is an opportunity for a summit loop hike via the Woodsum Spur trail. The Woodsum Spur is well blazed with the route clearly defined but offers a more remote and rugged hiking experience. The Spur passes near the true summit of Puzzle

Mtn. over the Southeast summit with excellent views east towards the Kennebec Highlands, and the far off Camden Hills. It then descends through spectacular open areas and high elevation forest. Some of these trips involve rugged footing and walking atop dramatic cliffs and drop-offs. Hikers should be prepared with sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing. See the scenery by bike

Western Maine’s varied topography makes for great road biking.

Our wide river valleys offer seemingly endless miles of straight and level spinning, much of it through quiet woods and beautiful farmland. And if you’re up for a more physical challenge, head for the surrounding foothills, with great climbs and descents with lengths varying from a three-and-a-half-mile climb up the Monkey Brook Road to the base of Jordan Bowl at Sunday River, to shorter routes right in Bethel village. Here are just a few examples:

Sunday River Road

A ride from the outskirts of Bethel out Route 2 and down the Sunday River Road will take you past Sunday River Ski Resort, the Artists Covered Bridge and out to the Letter S, a local swimming hole on the Sunday River. You can return by the same route with possible detours up to the Jordan Bowl Hotel, a challenging three and a half mile climb.

North Road

Another option from Route 2 just outside Bethel Village is the North Road, which offers long, mostly flat stretches through land devoted to agriculture and forestry, with occasional views over the nearby Androscoggin River.

North/South Ponds Loop

A 21-mile jaunt through nearby Greenwood and Woodstock, just south of Bethel, will take you through some lovely farmland and along the shores of South and North ponds.

The Notches

For longer treks, cyclists can ride through the scenic Grafton and Evans Notches, both off Route 2. You can find information about other road rides and local mountain bike routes at

McLaughlinGarden & Homestead

A short ride starts in Davis Park, right at the foot of Main Street. The park is easily reachable by bike from most Bethel area lodgings. The route follows the recreational pathway that starts here and winds for half a mile along the bank of the Androscoggin River. At the far end of the pathway is a

multi-use recreational bridge that spans the river. You can then loop around back down to the riverbank before returning toward the village. Longer rides starting in the village, include Route 35 toward Stoneham and Lovell, the Intervale/East Bethel roads/Route 26 loop, or Route 2 east toward Newry or Andover. All these rides offer several possible variations.

Eight access points along the beautiful Androscoggin River allow kayakers and canoeists to enjoy short or long paddles throughout the Bethel region. In summer months the trip is generally a gentle one, with plenty of opportunity to watch for moose, eagles and other wildlife. There are some areas of rapids, so boaters should use caution. High water can also create swift currents. Because Route 2 generally follows the path of the river, most access points are right off the road. They include: the Shelburne Bridge off Meadow Road in New Hampshire (on the Maine/N.H. border); Bridge Street in Gilead; Newt’s Landing off Ferry Road in West Bethel; Bethel Outdoor Adventure off Route 2; Davis Park off Route 26 in Bethel; Moran’s Landing off Route 2 in Hanover; Hanover Boat Launch off Route 2 in Hanover; Rumford Boat Launch off Route 2 in Rumford.

Some are public while others are on private land. In all cases, please be respectful of the land and wildlife along the river by packing out trash, refraining from campfires and checking for invasive plants on your craft before putting in. (Note: be mindful of poison ivy along the riverbank). For more on paddling the river, go to http://mahoosuc.org/landings. html. For those who wish to rent their craft, kayaks and canoes (and information) are available at Bethel Outdoor Adventure, located on the Androscoggin next to the Route 2 bridge in Bethel. Many lakes in the Bethel area also have public boat access, including Lake Christopher and North, South and Round ponds in Greenwood and Woodstock.

Other water bodies

In addition to the Androscoggin River, the Saco River in southwestern Maine is a favorite of canoeists and kayakers. Larger lakes within an hour’s drive include Lake Umbagog, Richardson Lake, and Kezar Lake.

A great place for anglers

Western Maine’s geography provides watersheds with an abundance of brooks, rivers and lakes. Within minutes of Bethel Village there are spots that produce brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout and landlocked salmon.

As the miles passed and the air cooled, the excitement grew, for soon I’d be tramping in the forest and paddling on the clear waters of western Maine. Before the car was even in park I’d be out the door and on a dead run. First to the stream, and then to the swimming hole. The cold rushing waters, lined with driftwood, were refreshing and clear, and after a quick dip, I was most certainly standing on a rock with my Zebco 202 in hand, hoping to catch a fish! in this place that I loved so much, a place I felt connected to, and a place I felt at home. Little did I know that I would not only be living in this place, but I’d be making a living here doing what I love, and providing an opportunity for others to share this same experience. Each summer, thousands of visitors head to the region for a chance to relax, to reconnect with each other, and to find adventure. Fortunately, adventure isn’t too hard to find here. Whether it’s looking for a moose, catching a brook trout, or enjoying the best lobster roll around, Bethel is sure to please! Now I’m certainly not discrediting our exceptional trout fishing. Brookies, browns, and rainbows are abundant. But as the waters warm and the days are long, the bass fishing is hot! Explore the Bethel region’s history

Located in the heart of the Broad Street Historic District, the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society provide visitors with a doorway to the area’s colorful past.

Founded in 1966 (and celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016!), the Bethel Historical Society collects, preserves, displays and interprets the history of western Maine and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire through exhibits, lectures, events, and publications. The Museums of the Bethel Historical Society feature six ex-

hibit galleries and nine period rooms spread throughout two buildings—the 1821 O’Neil Robinson House and the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House. The society also maintains an extensive collection of books, manuscripts and photographs, plus thousands of objects that help tell the story of the town of Bethel and the surrounding communities. Throughout the

The Dr. Moses Mason House next door features a series of fully-furnished period rooms and two floors of Rufus Porter School murals that provide insight into how a prominent Bethel couple lived during the first half of the 19th century. Also located in this building are the society’s research library and an exhibit hall where special summer exhibits are offered and which is used at other times for lectures and special programs. The Bethel Historical Society is open year-round, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; also Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m., during July and August. It is closed Sunday and Monday, and Nov. 1 through Thanksgiving Day. Guided tours of the Mason House take place Thursday through Saturday afternoons (1 to 4 p.m.) in July and

Discover the beauty of Western Maine’s gems and minerals The gems and minerals of Western Maine have been highly prized since the early 1800s. Some of the more common minerals found here include tourmaline, garnet, beryl, quartz, feldspar and mica. Visitors to the Bethel region can visit the many area gem shops, try their hand at panning for gems in a sluice or take a tour of a mine. There are also three mines open to the public in nearby Greenwood, on Richardson Hollow Road. The Tamminen, Waisonen and Harvard Mines are accessible only by foot. Just to the west of Bethel, in the White Mountain National Forest are Lord Hill, Deer Hill and Pingree Ledge, where rockhounds may collect. All are reachable only on foot. Information on all these mines is available on the Maine Geological Survey website, www.maine.gov/dacf/ mgs/frontend/collectors.

Before going out on your own, please check their list of Closed Localities, and always respect landowner wishes. You may also try gold panning in the Swift River in Byron. The museum will boast the world’s most extensive collection, exhibits and history of Maine mining, minerals, and gems in one location. Although it has not yet opened,

Tie the knot in western Maine’s mountains

A gazebo on an historic common, an old covered bridge, a mountaintop restaurant, and the 18th green on a beautiful golf course are just a few examples of the beautiful settings that draw brides and grooms to marry in the western mountains of Maine.

The Artist’s Covered Bridge on the Sunday River Road in Newry is a popular spot. The gazebo on the Bethel Common, next to the century-old Bethel Inn and across from Bethel’s historic district, is another. For the more adventurous, options can include Table Rock ledge in Grafton Notch State Park, or a rock island in Greenwood’s North Pond. Weddings can be built around a theme weekend that incorporates such activities as golf, canoeing, hiking or fly

fishing. Sunday River Ski Resort and the Bethel Inn Resort and Country Club both have beautiful golf courses. There are plenty of attractive indoor settings as well, at the many inns and hotels. Lodging places and restaurants can also provide function rooms for rehearsal dinners and receptions. Some offer an entire wedding package. Among the larger sites are the Bethel Inn Resort, Sunday River Ski Resort and the Phoenix House and Well Restaurant. There are also

smaller inns and restaurants that host weddings and wedding parties, and public halls are also an option. All the arrangements can be made on a day trip to the Bethel area, where florists, cake makers, photographers, and reception sites are happy to work with couples. For anyone planning a wedding at a public location, please check with the town office where the site is located regarding scheduling and other guidelines.

Deertrees Theatre: “Maine’s most enchanting playhouse” A summer visit to the Bethel area provides plenty of access to outdoor activities like hiking, biking, swimming, and golf. But did you know it could also include the opportunity to take in a play or concert in a unique historic theatre, built in classic Adirondack style and nestled deep in the western Maine woods? Deertrees Theatre in Harrison, a half hour from Bethel, was commissioned and built in 1936 by summer resident Enrica Clay Dillon as a 350-seat opera house. With its handcarved fixtures and near-perfect acoustics, it was said to rival any theatre on Broadway. The theatre hosted operas, plays, and concerts for several decades before being abandoned in the 1980s and falling into disrepair and foreclosure. It was in danger of being burned as a training exercise for the local fire department when a group of concerned citizens joined forces to try to save it. Extensive repairs and restoration allowed Deertrees to reopen in the 1990s, and it

has operated as a non-profit for the past two decades, with a staff of four paid employees and some very dedicated volunteers. An ambitious schedule of up to 40 productions each season offers something for everyone, with family comedies, literary readings, and concerts ranging from rock and jazz to Celtic and bluegrass music. The Backstage Gallery showcases the work of visual artists with a rotation of shows throughout the season, and the Salt Lick Cafe serves up homemade treats at intermission. It has become a tradition at Deertrees for theatre-goers to bring a picnic to enjoy at the outdoor tables before the doors open. Artistic and Executive Director Andrew Harris wanders the grounds before performances, greeting patrons, searching out first-timers, and launching into a brief history of the place. He welcomes the audience at the start of each show, and during the 2014

Built in 1936 in classic Adirondack style, Deertrees Theatre in Harrison has been lovingly restored and offers a busy season of plays and concerts throughout the summer. Submitted photo season he took to the stage as part of the Deertrees New Repertory Company. All of the employees and volunteers are just as helpful, friendly, and obviously passionate about the place, and it’s easy to see why. Deertrees really is, as they’re quick to remind you, “Maine’s most enchanting playhouse.” The scenic 25-mile drive on Route 35 from Bethel to the town of Harrison winds through shady woods, along the border of the White Mountain National Forest, and

The Bethel region has a variety of artists: painters, glass blowers, fiber artists, metal sculptors, wood carvers and many more. Their work can be found at area shops and at local summer festivals. Other artists, both local and visiting, fill the summer air with their music. The village Common in Bethel is the scene of much artistic and musical activity. Early July brings the Bethel Art Fair (July 4) with exhibiting artists, live performers and delicious food. Two weeks later the common comes alive again with arts, crafts and entertainment on MollyOckett Days (July 18 and 19), the biggest local festival of the season. In August there’s a free bandstand concert series on the Common every Sunday. Down Main Street from the Common, “Hoot Night” is a weekly open-mic event in the basement of an historic inn that draws musical talent from near and far.
