The weird thing about living at a ski resort is that while most people in the world are wishing for longer summers (or moving to Florida), you’re kind of wishing summer existed solely in the month of July. You’ve always got your fingers crossed for recordbreaking lows, freak early-season snow, and extraordinarily long, harsh winters. Well, harsh has such a negative connotation. Maybe I should say “substantial,” or even “historic.” Yeah, that works. You may recall that I am not a native New Englander and surely I’m in the minority when I say that I couldn’t wait to kick summer to the curb and revel in proper, leaf-peeping, New England autumn. Autumn in Maine is truly spectacular, which is why Sunday River celebrates it with Fall Festival weekend. Wayyy back in September, we tested our state-of-the-art snowmaking system and before we know it, these consistently cooler temps will allow us to open for the 2014/15 season, flaunting 50 acres of enticing, new terrain and a whole slew of other shiny, new stuff. Learn more about this season’s capital improvements in What’s New on pages 4 and 5 and Take a Trip Through Hollywood on page 8. Of course, season passholders will have primo access to all of the new, along with old favorites, like Winterfest events (page 15) and the 15th Annual Santa Sunday—be sure to read Editor-at-Large Darcy Morse’s survival guide on page 10. One of my favorite features this issue is Someday Bigger is Thankful for… (page 13). Our awesome daycare manager-turned-roving-reporter asked her adorable wards why they’re grateful this Thanksgiving, and while their answers are funny, they’re also mostly about family. I, for one, am grateful not only for my crazy family with whom I share DNA, but also for my Sunday River family, and that includes you.

What’s New at Sunday River: 2014/15 Capital Improvements Groomed to Perfection

New Ground to Cover

Sunday River’s groomers are every bit as dashing as its snowmakers, and you know what happens when you get a reputation for being dapper: You need to keep up appearances. Accordingly, the resort just secured two new PistenBully snowcats, a 400 and 400 Park. Sunday River’s Terrain Parks Crew will now have another kitty at its disposal to maintain the resort’s six terrain parks.

With 50 acres of fresh, expert terrain, Sunday River now offers 135 trails on 870 acres. Our Boundary-to-Boundary policy ensures that you can always find a stash to yourself. Read more about the resort’s new trails on page 8.

We Make Winter (And Save Energy) In addition to the new terrain, $1.1 million of this season’s capital investment package, along with an Efficiency Maine grant, helped the resort procure 172 new, energy-efficient snowguns: 117 HKD Impulse Tower Guns, 50 HKD Method Park Guns, and five Snow Logic Tower Guns. The resort now owns and operates a total of 1,900 snowguns (that’s a lot of fire power), which allow it to cover 95 percent of its non-gladed terrain with what has long been considered the best snow in the East. The T72 and 3D terrain park trails will both be lined, top to bottom, with new HKD Park Guns, which produce greater volumes of snow—a necessity for building medium and large park features. For added efficiency, Sunday River also fitted all of its water pumps with new, controllable pressure valves.

Parks and Rec Speaking of parks, the resort has consolidated four of its terrain parks on North Peak this season, alongside the ever impressive T72 (home of The Dumont Cup). The beginner park, Who-Ville, remains on South Ridge for the benefit of the lil’uns, and Rocking Chair will return to Barker Mountain.

Monday Mourning Manifesto Sunday River’s Competition Programs are integral to the resort’s identity, so part of the capital investment package will go toward giving Monday Mourning (the dedicated race trail) a bit of a makeover. When winter blows into town, Monday Mourning skiers will notice a wider entry point from T2, which will reduce race events’ impact on neighboring trail Cascades.

Future Stars offers kids between the ages of 8 and 10 an easy transition from the River Runners program’s fundamentals to the Gould Academy Competition Program.

The Perks of Being a Passholder By Casey Butler Possessing a New England Pass is much like having your own personal set of keys to a veritable armada of planes, trains, and Aston Martins. All of which are at your disposal whenever you feel a whim coming on. And those keys? Scratch that— one single, all-powerful skeleton key. Yeah, that’s better. It’s hanging around your neck. Just imagine the possibilities. As the proud holder of a 2014-15 New England Pass, you’re privy to numerous benefits—not least among which is the free skiing. That’s right, I said free. Say you’re between the ages of 19 and 64, and you buy a New England Gold Pass. (Solid choice, by the way.) By Casey Butler As part of Sunday River’s $5-million capital investment plan for the 2014-15 season, the resort is adding 50 new acres of terrain: four glades and a double black diamond beneath the Spruce Peak Triple lift. Top-billed Hollywood will be a 10acre, double-diamond glade between the Agony and Top Gun trails on Barker Mountain. Agony (also known as the Barker lift line) and Top Gun are beloved by expert skiers for their steep mogul sections. Throw some trees into the mix and you’re definitely not looking at an “easier way down,” so beginners, be sure to veer left toward Lazy River. Hollywood will have stars in skiers’ eyes, but no one wants to be seeing stars. Speaking of stars, not one but two new stars will be born this winter season when Starstruck and Starwood, both black diamond-rated glades, move into the celestial ‘hood that is Little White Cap (they join many a moon and star-themed trail). The fourth and final new glade this season is Yetiville, so named for its proximity to Eddy’s house on North Peak, to skier’s left of Dream Maker.

Since skiers run the risk of having a run-in with a yeti, this trail will be for the experts, with a single black diamond rating. Gnarnia is my personal favorite of the new trails. Named by Team Snow and boasting a double-diamond rating, this trail follows the Spruce Peak Triple lift line. Skiers will need to navigate a, well, a cliff in the upper section before crossing Three Mile Trail and passing into a wider section with glading on skier’s right. This will allow access to Last Tango from Spruce Peak. Alas, Gnarnia is going to be super challenging (gnarly) and loads of fun. Incidentally, the leisurely Spruce Peak Triple is also being upgraded this season with a conveyor loading system at its base, which will reduce stop time and increase speed by 20 percent. Last year, Sunday River received a $5.7 million capital investment package, part of which funded 75 new acres of terrain, including 60 acres of new gladed area and the 15-acre, world-class terrain park, T72. The resort currently offers 870 total acres of trails and a Boundary-toBoundary policy.

The 2015 Best of Bethel Awards It’s that time of year again: Cast your vote for the Fifth Annual Best of Bethel Awards to give all of your Bethel favs their due. If you wanted to nominate someone last year and just couldn’t find the appropriate category (hey, it could happen), you’ll be interested to note that we’ve added five brand new ones for the BOBs’ fifth birthday. One suggestion we’d like to offer our voters: When you vote for your favorite waiter /waitress, give us his/her name and the establishment at which s/he works. In fact, be as specific as humanly possible in every vote. Think Ski Resort Bartenders Merely Sling Pints? Think Again.

Since its opening in December 2013, Camp has prided itself on not only its creative dinner menus, featuring Maine-inspired comfort food with a gourmet twist, but also on its excellent beverage menus. Camp has a fine selection of signature cocktails (great for dates, as it were) but where the restaurant and its staff really shine is in the areas of craft beer and Scotch whisky. I have glimpsed the top-secret Camp training manual and let me tell you, in terms of complexity, it gives the bestselling title Learning to Fly Helicopters a run for its money. On one page, there is a map of Scotland and on it, more than 30 different Scotch whiskies, arranged by region. The next page describes each region and its whisky’s typical attributes. This is not information with which the casual Scotch drinker is concerned, and while most of the people who pass through Camp and order whiskies are exactly that, this type of comprehensive training will ensure that the aficionado will be as impressed with servers’ knowledge as the average après imbiber is with the staff’s warmth.

“To me, Camp is about exploring,” says Grand Summit Hotel Director of Food and Beverage Brian Simpson. “We will have one of the largest single malt offerings in the state [and] offering so many world-class Scotches will allow our guests to explore. Scotch is comfortable and warming. It inspires conversation. It’s Camp.” I know next to nothing about Scotch, but I do alright when it comes to craft beer, and as a self-professed beer geek-in-training, I can say that Camp is one of my top picks for après pints. They love to offer local beers on tap and their seasonal selections are ever rotating (as they should be). Camp offers craft beer from Shipyard, Baxter, Sea Dog, and other Maine breweries, along with Goose Island in Chicago, explains Simpson. The manual pages dedicated to beer are equally as thorough. Bartenders and kitchen staff alike are taught that “Allagash Black is a Belgian-style stout brewed with 2 Row barley, torrified wheat, oats, both roasted and chocolate malt, and a generous portion of dark, caramelized candied sugar.” So, if you hate it when a server tries to peddle you “this beer called Stella something that’s from, like, France, I think,” just sidle up to one of the lovely servers at Camp and ready yourself for a legit recommendation. They know their stuff.

From middle school and being the middle child to being stuck between a rock and a hard place or, if you’re lucky, the rose between two thorns, it’s rare to love being in the middle. Until now. Enter Gould Academy’s Winter Trimester Program. For seventh and eighth grade students, this on-snow trimester at Gould, which runs from late November through the end of March, puts students smack dab in the middle of it all—the Gould Academy campus, located in the heart of downtown Bethel, and the slopes of Sunday River. According to Bob Harkins, Winter Term Director for Gould Academy and a former coach for the US Ski Team, “The Winter Term Program gives students the opportunity to experience some of the best that this school has to offer in an exclusive winter trimester.” Winter Term students hit the slopes daily for on-snow training in competitive alpine, freestyle, and nordic skiing and snowboarding. Back on campus, they hit the books. This setup allows students to discover all that life in a boarding school has to offer, including living on-campus in dedicated girls’ and boys’ dorms and attending special school events, all while training for a competitive sport that they love. A typical day for a Winter Term student at Gould Academy might look like this: Breakfast, followed by a school-wide assembly. Next, she’s off to on-snow training at Sunday River, followed by lunch, and then classes. The evening is reserved for dinner and study hall. Sunday River Celebrates Double Nickels with Winterfest Weekend By Casey Butler Winterfest is kind of a magical thing. Last year, flakes began falling as ugly sweater sporters got merry in the Foggy Goggle and we all awoke to a foot of ethereal powder. Those of us who opted to go easy on the eggnog were treated to the first of last season’s many inspiring powder days. Sunday River’s Sixth Annual Winterfest Weekend will take place December 12 to 14, 2014, and here’s to hoping that it’s even more festive than the fifth—especially considering that it also marks our 55th birthday. With special ski and stay packages, fireworks displays, live music, and Santa Claus and Eddy the Yeti sightings, this entire weekend is devoted to wintertime grins. You have kids. What now? By Casey Butler Yeah, sure there are some folks who believe that a good time can’t be had by parents, period. We’re here to disrespectfully disagree. Naturally, Sunday River caters to the younger, singler-and-ready-to-mingler crowd from time to time. Namely, during College Week. But even then, the resort is committed to its littlest passholders, who often shred harder than us “grownups,” anyway. If you plan to spend Thanksgiving with the Sunday River family, many of our resort restaurants will be serving feasts fit for the fussiest of Pilgrims. And the holiday will extend all weekend long, thanks to games, movies, and crafts offered at both hotels—not to mention an evening fireworks display. The 15th Annual Santa Sunday will be on Sunday, December 7, 2014. This event is enormously popular and the 250 spaces fill up with online registrants within mere minutes. If you can snag a spot, it’s fun to take part, and it’s for a great cause—a $10 donation benefits the Sunday River Charitable Fund—but even if you opt out of dressing up like Old St. Nick, Santa Sunday is one of the best events to simply witness. You can’t help but smile when you see hundreds of Santas racing and dancing their ways into South Ridge. Learn more on page 10. Children’s Festival Week (January 12 to 16, 2015) is an entire week dedicated to families, with activities including scavenger hunts, live entertainment, movies, and themed Perfect Turn kids’ clinics. Q&A with Camp’s Executive Chef Jennifer Watchorn By Casey Butler What’s your culinary background and how did you end up at Sunday River? I went to Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburg, Pa. I have a baking degree, but once I got into the kitchen, I realized that I loved the savory part of cooking—although I do still love to bake. I started with Boyne as an intern in July 2003. When Sunday River became part of the Boyne family, I thought it would be a nice challenge. How long have you been working here at the resort? I’ve been with Sunday River since 2009. You used to work at Sliders. As a chef, how is Camp a different experience than Sliders? Camp has a more comforting, cozy, and rustic feel. What is your favorite part of your new gig?

What are the challenges?

Having the Foxfire room [and its independent menu] to stretch and expand [the part of ] my culinary style that doesn’t fit into the comfort food mold.

Trying to take the comfort food and giving it a twist, but not going too far so you don’t understand what it was supposed to be.
