Guest Speakers: 5.4.1 Val Karpinsky, BCIT A. VP Student Services • Student Services • Jim Mitchell, recreation, medical, counselling, financial aid, Aboriginal, • Library services – Learning Commons associated with it • Institutional Research and Planning • Reason for being here to help classmates to be successful in studies at BCIT • Staff forum – last Friday, focus asking employees to attract more to BCIT o How can you make students more successful o 15 pages of concepts – working on how employees can help students o Key ideas: Provide more lounge space for students, mentoring students (2nd year students helping 1st years cope with stress), alumni more involved with institutes (alumni mentoring 2nd year students) o Issue: study space on campus is lacking, BCIT needs to provide more suitable space (will provide opportunity for after hours) SA already brought up after-hours study space after 10pm study spaces locked up, not available for students • Safety is a concern (computer labs might be vulnerable at early hours of morning) • Conducted full-time survey for students o One issue is study space o Students want to see school schedule well in advance before term begins Will look into helping students o Students are not aware of services on campus Spent time with Michelle from UConnect Doing an excellent job in communicating services to students Impressive Will meet with Michelle next week in helping BCIT o Students don’t have a voice in communicating student policies Only representative is Brenda in Board Students want more of a voice, will explore and address that o Talk about students’ sense of belonging BCIT is program based Only communicate with instructors and colleagues • Create networks Students don’t feel they’re attached to BCIT as a whole • Lacking in what other Universities or colleges have • Need to explore • BCIT meets with SA – open door policy (every 3rd Wednesday) o Here to make students more successful

Discussion: • Thomas Trowbridge – felt needed a connection with 2nd year students last year • Joshua – made connections with 2nd, 3rd, 4th term from Learning Commons • Jennah – sense of belonging, doesn’t feel like it o Knows other faculties are more involved (marketing) o From broadcast, have contests – want more communication with other schools Bulletin boards aren’t enough • Roan – what are the policies students can change? o Val – Education Council education policy BOG – everything else • Wendy – more studying areas? Where? SE6 is popular o Val – trick is to take advantage of additional space to convert it into studying space Jim Mitchell converted SE1 into a studying counter (using available space) Working with existing space but if making new buildings, will consider studying space in plans o Thomas T – potential for studying a sports team? Val – used to coach badminton in inter-collegiate team in BCIT a long time ago • BCIT students don’t have the time to compete into inter-collegiate sports • Better off putting money to encourage all students into recreation and healthy lifestyles

Brenda – to seek support today and still hearing back from designers and BCIT o Money isn’t coming out of student pockets, but interest from investments Konstantin - how much is alumni asking for? o Sherri – up to $50,000 to match Alumni Emily – is there a fee if students want to use area? o Sherri – fee only if catering is involved No space rental fee yet (but no guarantees for future) SA and Alumni has top priority Not a revenue generator – want to bring back alumni back to campus • Pub isn’t the best venue for reunion Irina – how large is the area? o Sherri – can host 100 standing, 70 seating o Whole project includes expanding outside courtyard for good weather conditions Joshua – what is the projected time frame? o Sherri – fairly short 6 months– taking opportunity for renovations already in the works, face-lift Planning to make cafeteria BCIT Student/Alumni Pavilion Geoff – board will stay in lower? Roan’s report re: Instructors using WebCT to post grades Benny – Roan said instructors didn’t see it beneficial to post grades online Thomas T – is it worth for instructors to post every grade (assignments, tests, midterms) Todd – good to track progress Konstantine – tools are already there Wendy – confused where to check grades Mybcit or webct Thomas N – keep teachers accountable Alec – what are the benefits? Roan – trying to plan a survey or proposal Josh- all instructors give assignments back Anmar – why can’t we teach the teachers to use system?
