BCIT Full time Student Bursaries. Bursaries are non-repayable awards for full time students who are progressing satisfactory in their BCIT credential program or who document that they need additional financial assistance. The application form is required. Students must complete a term of study (level) in the program or a minimum of four months of full time study before being eligible for a program. It was recommended to visit the BCIT website or contact Student Financial Aid and Awards for detailed eligibility criteria and information. Bursaries deadlines are Fall term deadline: October 30. Opened for specific programs only. Application form is available annually on October 1st. Winter term deadline: January 30 Opened for most full time students. Application form s available annually on January 2. Spring term deadline: June 30. Opened for specific programs only. Application form is available annually on June 1. Scholarships. BCIT scholarship, Achievement Awards and Graduating Awards are merit based and are selected by BCIT are awarded early in the second year of program. No application form is required for the BCIT awards. Scholarship are presented to the top academic students who are enrolled in a 100% course load while in first year. Questions: Can international students apply for bursaries? -No for bursaries, but they can be nominated with Scholarships and Awards. What should we do if we have missed the deadline for bursaries? Do we still have chances to apply for it? It will depend on reason, if it is a good reason you need to explain it to the Financial Aid and Awards and appeal the deadline. In case of appeal is not supported, Agata recommended to apply for the next bursaries. Why do you have 3 different deadlines? To have a possibility to accommodate all of the programs. Where can we receive the appeal form for the bursaries? It is under consideration right now, however in the end of February or in the beginning of March you can get it through the office of Financial Aid and Award. Do you know anything about the external awards? Yes one of them is Garfield Weston Awards.

Garfield Weston Upper-Year Awards program is for students who have at least one full year left in an eligible program. Award value is 5 awards at up to $30,000 plus a tuition waiver. Christina Batstone, Advocacy coordinator, BCITSA Christina Batstone explained that BCITSA represents the academic and non-academic interests of all BCIT students to BCIT and all levels of government. The Advocacy Office is on Campus to help students navigate through the policies and procedures that are laid out by the Institute, as well as provide information, resources and support during your academic career.
Harassment and Discrimination Student Discipline Cases and Appeals Academic Appeals Parking Disputes Residential Tenancy and Housing Issues She provided examples of academic and non-academic issues the students can have.
Set rep commented on some issues o Sometimes the textbooks are very expensive and mandatory. o Different problems with instructors. Christina proposed everybody who has questions and issues to come and see her on the regular hours of operation from Monday to Friday form 8:00am – 4:00pm Location SE2 – 285. Christina asked students not to use BCIT Wi-Fi opportunities for illegal purposes (for example to download movies, songs, programs, games from Torrent). She explained that BCIT supports copyrights and warns students from downloading such websites. Advocacy Coordinator Christina Batstone commented that these illegal actions are very easily caught (she gave the example how BCIT can get to know about such facts) and students can be penalized for these actions. 1.3 Chairs announcements Alisa announced about the following: Harvest Box Harvest Box is a monthly program for students who want to purchase high quality produce at affordable prices. Each box costs just $8. The Harvest Box is available once a month nears the

end of the month. Purchase cut-off dates are approximately one week prior to the pick-up dates. It is first-come-first-serve with a limited number of boxes, so get your order in early. For a listing of all purchase and pick-up dates drop by the Uconnect or check out our Events Calendar. Quiestion: What is the last day we can give our payment? Boxes are delivered on the last Thursday of the month, and payments must be received by 4pm on the Wednesday on the week before. The schedule for the Peer Tutor Drop-In can be found on the BCIT website, by the subject, or in the student services in learning commons. Follow the link: http://www.bcit.ca/files/learningcommons/pdf/bcitprintableschedule-tutors.pdf The Peer Tutoring Program is designed to help students succeed at BCIT. This program is subsidized by the BCITSA to help enhance student success. One-to-one Peer Tutoring Tutoring sessions are available at $16 per hour and Peer Tutoring Program vouchers can be purchased at the Uconnect Centre. The best person to contact to buy the vouchers is Tatsiana, bus: 604-451-7087, uconnect@bcitsa.ca ďƒź Agendas for 2011-2012. BCITSA invites students to participate in the creating of new design of Agenda. Anyone interested is allowed to submit up to 3 designs maximum. Candidate that is chosen will receive $150, a credit in the agenda, and various copies for their portfolio. Student must be willing to make slight modifications to the file upon request to do so (such as adding the BCITSA logo, etc). Specs: 6.75x9.25inches (plus 0.25 bleed) Full Colour (CMYK) Required Copy: 2011-2012 BCITSA Student Agenda Must include space at bottom right for the BCITSA logo. Questions? Why the previous chair has been changed? The previous chair was impeached. The best person to answer detailed question is Jordan Harris, president@bcitsa.ca, 604-432-8603. Do you know any information about the Upass? It was announced that of the 41% of eligible students who voted, 85% voted in favour of the U-Pass BC Transit Program, and as such, the referendum has been passed. The U-Pass BC Program could available as early as May 2011. How people can opt out for the Upass program? Christina explained that just 5 percent of people can opt out according to the contract. Students must hold a upass from another institution in order to opt out. More details about this will come out as implementation approaches. What will happen if we don’t pay for the Upass? If students don’t pay, they don’t get the marks in the end of the terms and cannot receive official transcripts.
